Lord of the Flies
William Golding
Summer Essay
In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, one of the scenes that I think is
central to the development of the story is when Ralph and Piggy discover the conch
shell on the beach and use it to summon the boys together after the crash. This scene has
great importance to the plot of the story considering it was the first time the boys held a
meeting and discussed their situation. They came up with a system that would eliminate
chaos. For example, in their very first meeting, they voted on a chief, choosing Ralph
over Jack because he was the one with the conch. This proves that the boys seem to think
that power, responsibility, and leadership skills come from the conch. In reference
Leadership Challenge, by Kouzes and Posner Essay
In the Leadership Challenge, 4th edition, it is Kouzes Posner (2007) intention to
present a road map for individuals to follow on their leadership journey. The authors
stress that leadership is not a gene and it s not an inheritance. Leadership they assert is
an identifiable set of skills and abilities that are available to all of us (p. 23). They make
clear that the great person theory of leadershipis plain wrong. Leaders are our everyday
heroes who do extraordinary things on a regular basis (p. 23).
Empirically based, the writers begin the book by offering five practices of exemplary
leadership: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable
Others to Act and Encourage the Heart (p. 14). In their ... Show more content on

They have to enlist others in a common vision (p. 17). The challenge, Kouzes Posner
says is to turn the idea into an inspired vision (p.106). The leader needs to imagine the
possibilities and find a common purpose. The authors refer to James MacGregory
Burns transformational leadership theory asserting that people commit to causes, not
plans (p. 122). In order to have a transforming effect, the leader must raise the level of
human conduct and ethical aspiration of both the leader and follower. Just like Kotter
(1990) outlines the methods to change an organizational culture is by telling stories,
using symbols, the designing of physical space, using jargon, rituals, etc., Kouzes
Posner suggest the same thing when they explain the power in using symbolic
language to communicate a shared identify and give life to a vision (p. 143). When
challenging the process, leaders know that in order to bring change they have to
experiment and take risk (p. 19). The authors indicate that proactive people tend to work
harder ...[by being] persistent in achieving their goals (p. 169) and treat every job as an
adventure (p. 184).
Leadership is not a solo act, it s a team effort the authors explain (p. 223). To enable
others to act the leader needs to create a climate of trust by facilitating relationships. To
start the process one must, be the first to let go of control, Kouzes and Posner explain
and it requires self confidence (p. 227). Just like Bass and Avolio (1980)
Discovering Mortality in Once More to the Lake Essay
Discovering Mortality in Once More to the Lake
E. B. White s story Once More to the Lake is about a man who revisits a lake from his
childhood to discover that his life has lost placidity. The man remembers his childhood as
he remembers the lake; peaceful and still. Spending time at the lake as an adult has made
the man realize that his life has become unsettling and restless, like the tides of the
ocean. Having brought his son to this place of the past with him, the man makes
inevitable comparisons between his own son and his childhood self, and between
himself as an adult and the way he remembers his father from his childhood perspective.
The man s experience at the lake with his son is the moment he discovers his own ...

I would be in the middle of some simple act, I would be picking up a bait box or laying
down a table fork, or I would be saying something and suddenly it would be not I but my
father who was saying the words or making the gesture (White 151).
When the man lay in bed early one morning, he heard his son sneak out to take a canoe
out on the lake, just as he used to do when he was a child. By living a dual existence
the man could see from two perspectives; his son sneaking out early in the morning, his
father lying in bed listening to his son sneak out. I began to sustain the illusion that he
was I, and therefore, by simple transposition, that I was my father (White 151). The man
s alternate ways of viewing these events convinced him that he was becoming his father.
This thought eventually leads to the man s realization that he will die someday, just as his
father did. A thunderstorm came over the lake one day when the man was a child. He
remembered swimming in the lake just after the storm passed, but while rain was still
coming down. Just like the scene from his childhood, another thunderstorm came over
the lake, only instead of swimming in the lake with the others, the man merely watched
his son put on his bathing suit.
I watched him, his hard little body, skinny and bare, saw him wince slightly
Folk Tale And Tale Comparison
In our time period, folktales and myths can occur in daily life. They share a relevance
in our actions, our choices, and our feelings. For example, in today s world we are like
the greek gods and goddesses. They are often jealous of one another and fight with
each other over foolish things like today people will fight over foolish things and
share some jealousy. Although people may disagree with tales sharing similarities,
tales like The Apple Of Discord still connect with our actions, choices, and feelings in
today s world. The Poem Apple of Discord by Kate Hovey, is about the goddess of
discord, Eris. Eris is angry at the gods and other goddesses because the exclude her, yet
she is doing the same thing they are. Eventually, she throws
Cultural Diversity In Australia In The 1970 s
Australia s success is largely due to the cultural diversity of our migrants.
Australia a nation known for its multiculturalism and diversity didn t always accept
migrants, in fact Australia did not accept all people until they dismantled the White
Australia Policy a policy that had been in place since 1901 the policy was in place
with the sole purpose of excluding people who were not desirable and only abolished
shortly after the events of World War II, Past events have helped create and shape
Australia s unique identity of today. The idea of migration in the past is nowhere near the
same as it is now, during the first half of the 19th century Australia experienced high rates
of migration which was the beginning of Australia s cultural diversity.... Show more

The same fate for other war torn countries happened in the 20th century where Australia
had experienced huge amounts of migration activity, e.g. countries such as Vietnam,
Hungary, and Chile migrated to Australia to escape from war. The substantial
immigration program experienced most migrants coming from the United Kingdom,
China and India, this huge influx of migration saw much success in Australia, where
migrants brought about new and unique developments in the economy, things such as
entrepreneurship, new labour and skills in which they provided and catered to the

HIV
Like the majority of the American population I have lived in a cloud of ignorance about
the HIV and AIDS crisis. I have never know anyone close to me that has been infected
with either of the two viruses. So when the option to research something to do with
sexuality arouse I felt this would definitely further my education about a lethal killer that
is roaming this earth. Since I knew next to nothing about this topic I will start from the
begging of the disease and discuss where it s at now.

This is where normal sickness, disease, and other things in the environment are now able
to attack the bodies system. This stage is called the chronic symptomatic disease. A very
noticeable symptom is a thrush, which quot;is a yeast infection of the mouth...
quot;(Kelly 532). Also at this stage there can be infections of the skin and also feelings
of fatigue, weight loss, diarrhea, etc.
The actual period of the HIV virus really varies from person to person.
Normally with in a year or two the serve stages of HIV set in. At this point in the
victims life it is said they have progressed into the Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome(AIDS). This status is established when one or more of
diseases have accumulated in the effected victims system. Many victims often have
lesions appear on their skin or they begin to acquire a pneumocystic pneumonia. The
final stage of the virus attacks the nervous system, quot;damaging the brain and the
spinal cord. quot;(Kelly 532). This can lead to a number of problems in the body:
blindness, depression, loss of body control, loss of memory. This can often last for
months before the victim finally passes away.
Once the HIV virus enters the body it infects the quot;T quot; cell the protectors of the
immune system. Once they have attached to the T cell the HIV molecule sheds it s outer
coating and then releases the

Clean Coal Technology
HOW CLEAN COAL TECHNOLOGIES CAN REDUCE AIR POLLUTION FROM
COAL
Coal is the most hazardous of all fossil fuels. When coal is burned, it produces emissions
that contribute to global warming, create acid rain and pollute water. Clean coal
technology is a collection of technologies that was developed to reduce the environmental
impact of coal energy generation. When coal is used as a fuel material or source, the
gaseous emissions generated by the thermal decomposition of the coal include nitrogen
oxides, sulphur dioxide ,carbon dioxide, mercury and other chemical byproducts that vary
depending on the properties of coal being used. These emissions have been established to
have a negative impact on the environment and human health, contributing
General James Research Paper
General Daniel Chappie James Jr.
Introduction
General Daniel Chappie James Jr. stated, Our greatest weapon is one we have always
possessed our heritage of freedom, our unity as a nation. (QUOTE) Now imagine if
you was in the Air Force in 1945 as a fighter pilot and you just came back from war but

General James knew that with no barriers the Air Force could be the strongest
Airpower in the world but it he had to get pass segregation laws and fight for what he

Al-Ghazali The Banking Concept Of Education
Al Ghazali, an Islamic philosopher, shared his thoughts on education in his work
Manners to be Observed by Teachers and Students. The writing was published in (insert
date), and Ghazali argues that education should be intertwined with religion. In his
essay titled Manners , both student and teacher were to follow a list of duties. Students
were to follow the list not only to obtain knowledge, but to know God. The role of a
teacher was to lead students to the path of righteousness. Manners put teachers in a
position of power, in a similar way to what Freire was arguing in The Banking Concept
of Education. Al Ghazali put teachers in a position of superiority to students. Students
were expected to be submissive to their teachers and not take pride or exalt himself...
entrust him to the conduct of all his affairs (25). Al Ghazali s vocabulary throughout the
essay is derogatory towards the students. While reading the essay words such as duty
(63) and submit (25). Al Ghazali looks to God to run the classroom, explaining in the
essay that both students and teachers work for God. The ideology brainwashes students
to forget their own thoughts and opinions to meet the expectations of Ghazali s duties. A

He argues that the current education system is causing students to be suppressed by their

causing them to lose their own thoughts, opinions, morals, etc. Freire argues that The

What Is The Theme Of Bread By Sandra Cisneros
BREAD SANDRA CISNEROS I question whether these two people in the story are
having an affair, back together after a divorce, or whatever? Something as simple as
bread can lead to that answer. The bread is much like their relationship, actually
exactly like it. We were hungry. We went into a Bakery on Grand Avenue and bought
bread. Filled the backseat. The whole car smelled of bread. Big sourdough loaves
shaped like a fat ass (Cisneros 84). It was an affair. They were lusting each other and
finally have to give in and it is Grand, like the Avenue, it fills the backseat, and the
whole car smells of it. Comparing the bread to an ass also takes on a sexual tone. We
ripped big chunks with our hands and ate (Cisneros 84). They gorged... Show more

I mean seriously. This girl is pretty pathetic. It is even kind of funny. This guy has

the theme that to those who wait good things will come. And maybe even, be grateful

The Merchant Of Death Story Arc
The Merchant of Death story arc continues to mirror that of the one developed by
George Lucas. While the entirety of Episode IV: A New Hope could be categorized as
a completion of Hero s Journey, to better understand Luke Skywalker s transition from
farm boy to Jedi Knight, all the sequels of the Star Wars saga can be explored to create
a more unified representation. In Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Luke is
deployed on the barren planet Hoth serving the Rebel Alliance when he is called on by
Ben Kenobi s spirit; he instructs Skywalker to travel to the Dagobah system to complete
his Jeditraining. Amidst a Rebel retreat after an attack from the Galactic Empire, Luke
travels to his intended star system with the goal in mind of finding another master.
Eventually, crash landing in the swamp ridden planet of Dagobah, Luke encounters a
seemingly meager creature who pesters him to the point of frustration, only to find out
the individual was Jedi Master Yoda. After consulting the protagonist s former instructor,
Yoda dismissively accepts Luke as his padawan learner. Though Luke had received
training from Obi Wan, his knowledge, and training in the use of Force was limited,
therefor constraining full potential. Even with the guidance from a Master Jedi, he
continuously failed his master s obscure tests, which can be attributed to Luke s lack of
faith in himself. This mentality facilitated his uncertainty and frustration to the point
where even Yoda had doubts on his legitimacy
The Theory Of Albert Bandura s Social Learning Theory
Albert Bandura is one of the most influential psychologist in history, best known for his
famous Bobo Doll Experiment. From this experiment, Bandura developed his Social
Learning Theory, the theory that we learn from one another through observation.
To prove his theory, Bandura used children to see if they would imitate a modal who
showed aggressive behavior toward a Bobo doll. The subjects were 36 boys and 36 girls
from the Stanford University s Nursery School aged between 3 and 6 years old. The
models were two adults, male and female. Aggressive behavior was shown to 24
children, non aggressive behavior was shown to 24 children and 24 children served as
the control group. For the first step of the experiment, a child and a model were
brought into a room containing toys. The child was escorted to a corner that had
potato prints and stickers while the model was escorted to a corner that had a tinker
toy set, a mallet and a 5 foot inflated Bobo doll. For subjects that were in the aggressive
condition, the model began aggressing toward the doll after a minute. The model
performed distinct aggressive acts that Bandura was looking for the child to imitate. The
model laid the doll on its side, sat on it and punched it repeatedly in the nose and then
raised the doll, picked up the mallet and struck it on the head. Following the mallet
aggression, the model tossed the doll up in the air and kicked it around the room. These
aggressive acts were repeated three times, interspersed

As the sun slowly peaked out of the horizon in Riverside, California, the scorching sun

I can think about is the sweat escaping my body, running down my skin. However,
luckily, a thick Oak benchwith a shade roof sat directly above from me to I can hide

I wiped off most of it due to over heating of my body. Once I was comfortable on the

Apple Search Warrant
Multi billion dollar companies, Apple and Google have brought the attention of
security on their devices, by upgrading them 10 fold, basically changing it out for a
military grade protection. Rendering it almost impossible for anyone even Apple and
Google themselves to break in, hack, or even crack the code of any of their devices.
Apple had stated, as the new operating system becomes widely deployed over the next
several weeks, the number of IPhones and IPads that Apple is capable of breaking
into for police will steadily dwindle to the point where only devices several years old
and incapable of running iOS 8 can be unlocked by Apple (Timberg). When FBI

But now its making the use of a search warrant for devices, basically impossible,
sending police and FBI agents into a tail spin. The sole purpose of a warrant is to gain
access to a highly suspected criminals information without any need of the persons

one, you must first have tangible evidence that a person is committing a crime, then
you must present it to a judge and convince them to sign the warrant, which inter

making it impossible for the company to turn over data from most iPhones or iPads to

After GM began to announce that the company will be closing it s location in Flint,
Michigan and will be moving down to Mexico the whole city of Flint began to
deindustrialize. About half of Flint was left unemployed. Due to a lot of people losing
jobs, primarily from the GM company, more and more people were being evicted from
their houses and going on welfare. Because of the outsourcing it lead to Flint becoming
deindustrialized. A lot of the population was moving elsewhere, which is also why
rental companies were running out of vans to rent, due to a high volume of people
renting them. Neoliberalism also caused GM shut down its factory and move to
Mexico. The Free trade agreement was very beneficial for Roger Smith where he can
make more profit for the same amount of work. Smith also mentioned in the film that
he would rather be paying Mexican s $0.70 versus paying the Americans more for the
same labour. Neoliberalism is all about making profit even if you re at your highest
profit point. In Smith s case it was for his own benefit to take advantage of the Free
trade agreement to go down to Mexico where the company can make more profit.
Deindustrialization didn t only affect GM, it also affected almost the rest of Flint,
Michigan. Most of Flint s citizens were being forced to go on Welfare because they were
unemployed. The documentary also showed the crime rate increasing as poverty and

Similarities Between Sparta And Athens
Abstract:
Ancient Greece was made up of a number of sovereign city states, each one responsible
for governing itself and establishing its own form of government. The two most
renowned of these were Sparta and Athens Sparta for its military prowess and its
campaign to usurp other smaller city states, and Athens, renowned for its cultural
influence on the world at large, from architecture and philosophy to art and language.
This paper looks at the different systems of government in the city states and how each
one influenced the status of the state.
Keywords: Monarchy, Aristocracy, Tyranny, Oligarchy, and Democracy
Introduction:
There four main forms of government that existed in Ancient Greece were monarchy
(rule of one), oligarchy (rule of a few), tyranny (rule by force) and democracy (rule by
many). Aristocracy in the context of this paper, was not so much a system of
government but more of a hierarchy which allowed a citizen to rule. It was rare to find
a commoner rising through the ranks to become a leader leaders were more often than
not picked from the aristocratic class, those who by birth or social standing, became the
elite of society.
Monarchy:
Monarchy is typically defined as rule by one person, often through birth right, who rules
until death (in extreme cases a monarch can be deposed), wherein the first born son takes
over the monarchy. The monarch a king or a queen in Ancient Greece, would have been
an absolute ruler, meaning that their rule was law
Consciousness and the Placebo Effect Essay
Consciousness and the Placebo Effect
In controlled studies, experimenters use placebos as medium to compare the efficacy of
a drug. Double blind controlled studies provide information on whether a drug is
effective or if it is not better than placebo. The results of double blind studies usually
depict the latter. Rarely are drugs found to be significantly more effective than placebo
because of the placebo effect. The phenomenal effectiveness of the placebo in controlled
experiments is mind boggling. Experimenters can not fully understand the etiology of the
placebo effect in relation to the nervous system but they have proposed plausible
suggestions to the underlying mechanisms involved. An intriguing question raised is the
placebo s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By controlling for subject expectation, experimenters are trying to eliminate the placebo
effect. The placebo effect occurs when the placebo, which can not on its own merit have
any affect, does in fact have the same or similar affect as the experimental substance or
procedure (1). However, some double blind control studies use active placebos. Active
placebos contain compounds which warrant side effects so that the subject feels as
though they are receiving therapeutic treatment. The efficacy of the placebo in
experiments, commonly account from 30 40% and sometimes up to 75% or 80% (2).
In the early 18th century, the word placebo was associated with quackery (3). Although
the reason for the high success rate of the placebo is yet to be explained, experimenters
have hypothesized plausible explanations for its effect. Advanced models attempting to
explain placebo effects emphasize the role of expectations, anxiety and learning (3).
The placebo effect illustrates the effectiveness of the physician s role in healing a
patient. Past research show that a patient s high opinion of the physician prescribing the
treatment (4) as well as the doctor s personality can invoke the placebo effect.
Furthermore, research has shown that an amiable doctor with a positive outlook of a
drug treatment would induce the placebo effect.
The power of the placebo is more readily explained as a function of the individual
because the

countries from entering the United States in a certain amount of days. The travel ban

bias for the travel ban. Fox News uses quotes from many people in favor of the travel

defended the travel ban, saying Trump is using his rightful authority to keep people
safe. They also used the quote I fully expect this executive order to have the same uphill

The Realm Of Certified Nursing
Myocardial Infarction Gwendolyn PearsonSJVC Online HTH 107 D 2 Shelly Sowers
July 31, 2015 Abstract There are many races, hurdles, and obstacles to contend with
throughout the course of life such as: life itself, family and health. In the realm of
Certified Nursing, I have become more intent on knowing more about the lifestyles of
the people, and the good and bad results of daily tasks that ensure their happiness.
Safety, and the many diseases/disorders that have been encountered by others, can only
be counter acted by better knowledge, resources, and means of assurance in providing
ways of increasing the (ADLs). While reading, I came across the disorder of Myocardial
Infarctions, and found the information to be remarkably interesting. First of all, I learned
that infarctions are commonly known for being obstructions of the blood supply to the
organs and tissues; whether by the thrombus or embolous. This obstruction causes tissues
to die. (Medicine Net, 2015).There s different kinds of infarctions, such as: Myocardial,
Acute, Cerebellar, and Right Ventricular. Therefore, myocardial infarctions are
irreversible necrosis of heart muscle, which are secondary to prolonged ischemia
(emedicine, 2015). Therefore, myocardial infarctions are irreversible necrosis of heart
muscle, which are secondary to prolonged ischemia (emedicine, 2015). Symptoms In
learning about the difference, I decided to take a closer look at the causes. Although

Castle Rackrent Essay
Maria Edgeworth s Castle Rackrent is a satirical novel blaming the Irish people and the
English Landlords for the plight of the Irish poor. She illustrates the comical ways of the
drunks, and the way they act towards the Landlords. The Landlords on the other hand are
careless men and women that control the towns. One example of Edgeworth s use of
satire in Castle Rackrentinvolves the landlords and their lack of leadership abilities.
Another example of satire in Castle Rackrent is Jason s inherent leadership abilities as
an Irishman. Finally, another obvious use of satire is the language that is used by Maria
Edgeworth. Castle Rackrent is a brillant piece of satire because Edgeworth ridicules the
Irishman and their irresponsible English... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another example of Edgeworth s satirizing English landlords is less obvious through
Sir Murtaugh, who is a lawyer, and spends all of his money on his lawsuit which in the
long run caused him to be in debt. Murtaugh also had no leadership amoung the
landlords. Furthermore, Lady Skin Flint takes from the tenants, Thady says Her table
the same way, kept for the next to nothing, duty fowls, and duty turkies, and duty geese,
came as fast as we could eat em, for my lady kept a sharp look out, and knew to a tub of
butter everything the tenants had, all round. When Sir Murtaugh died, but they were a
set of poor wretches, and we had nothing but misfortunes with them, always breaking and
running away. This, Sir Murtaugh and my lady said, was all their former landlord Sir
Patrick s fault, who let em all get the half year s rent into arrear, there was something in
that, to be sure. Edgeworth is also satirizing the English landlords through Murtaugh
because Sir Murtaugh only takes from the tenants, which increase the desperate situation
of the Irish people. Sir Kit s story is a satire because Edgeworth

Diary Entry For Alaska Journal Entry
Entry 1
I just set out on my great Alaskan adventure. This may not be my first day in Alaska but
this definitely the start of my true adventure. I am alone out here. The only other living
creatures here are the animals. I have prepared for this. I know I am ready. After leaving
the last man who I hitchhiked with I set out on the trail. He offered me a sandwich that I
am currently eating while sitting here and contemplating my surroundings. The land is
vast and the stampede trail seems almost never ending. It is cold but not unbearable
so. I plan to forage for dinner using my guides to find edible plants and berries. This
may be my last big adventure I take on. The reason for that may be my own choice or
the choice of nature. Things look good at the moment and I do not see a reason for
that to change. I don t get lonely easily and I don t particular seek out human
companionship, but I do feel as if I may start to miss some of the people who I have
come to be attached to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I attempted to leave but I was forced to turn around because of an unexpected river. I am
very weak, unable to accomplish the necessary tasks in order to survive out here. I am
dying. If I do not get help soon I will be dead. I am not able to hunt and I fear I will soon
start to lose my grip and succumb to starvation. I have very little to support myself and I
am in a very unhealthy state. I believe this is caused by something I have eaten. All I can
say at this point is I am happy I was able to experience this before I died. I was able to
live up to the writing I gained my inspiration from. Like Huckleberry Finn and the
premise of Jack London s novels I have rejected what I saw wrong with society and lived
to my own accord. I am content with how I have lived my life over these last few years,
and I believe I made the correct choice to come out here. I just truly hope I am able to
receive help soon. So I guess this may be goodbye Alex
Eminent Domain Of Economic Development
According to Bowman and Kearney, economic development is the process by which a
community, state, or nation increases its level of per capita income, high quality jobs,
and capital investment (Bowman Kearney, 2014, p. 370). Throughout our readings, it is
presented that economic development exists because of the gradual decline of our
metropolitans. More recently, it s been explained that economic developmenthas become
a local issue that localities are attempting to resolve due to the stale mate federal
government and partly the Great Recession, and doing this with a deteriorating taxbase in
the form of population and jobs which increase the deteriorating infrastructure.
Cities have lost population, such as Detroit which lost 25% in ... Show more content on

When asked whether the tax breaks and subsidies actually created jobs, elected
officials and economic development experts couldn t say for sure (Fulton, 2014, p.
171). Stadiums fall in this realm as well. Owners of the big four (NFL, MLB, NBA,
NHL) have secured nearly $20 billion in taxpayer subsidies for new stadiums
(DeMause, 2014, p. 73). In 1984, a study by Robert Baade on 30 cities with recent
stadiums constructed found that 27 had no measurable economic impact, and in 3 cases,
economic activity actually decreased. These findings have been repeated since then and
tell the same story. A study on mega events like Super Bowls, South FL economist, Phil
Porter found no measurable impact on spending which he attributed to the crowding out
effect of non football tourists steering clear of town on game weeks (DeMause, 2014, p.
Communicate A Universal Truth Analysis
Don t we all have something in common? Well that s just how comedians have an effect
to communicate a universal truth with their audience. Whether if its confusion,
sickness, frustration we all have something that we can relate to and that is how
comedians use this effect because we can relate to that feeling or subject. That s how a
comedian can communicate a universal truth to us by using humor. Who s on First? No
Who is on first!!!!! In that essay the universal truth was th at how confused and
frustrated Costello was. We all can relate to that because more than likely all of us has
been frustrated or confused before. That s part of the main reason we laugh because we
can relate to it. The confusion and frustration is happening because
Sisterhood In Lucy Baker s The Coquette
The bond of female friendship is an important factor in the novel, especially since Eliza
finds herself lonely without the companion of a female friend who might understand her
plight; however, Eliza does not have a friend who understands her perils. All of the
people in her life, with the exception of her mother, find Eliza beneath them. Eliza s
thoughts and actions to some extent and helped the plot of novelto grow in a significant
manner. Baker states that the theme of sisterhood remains prominent with Foster s
work; however, the so called sisterhood is made up of petty, condemning ladies (Lucy
Freeman and Julia Granby) whose idea of friendship revolves about social status and
gossip, even concerning their dear friend (Foster, 127).... Show more content on

Boyer is condescending and demonstrates her idea of an excellent partner (27). Lucy,
like most women at the time, found marriage to be a way of securing a socially and
financially affluent future; her description of Mr. Boyer, whose taste, manners and
morals, are highly regarded, supports the materialism of the time period. Baker finds that
The Coquette is considered a tragic novel in that it depicts the seduction and fall of a
young woman, and the reader can track the tragic disintegration of Eliza Wharton against
her flagging commitment to precision and clarity in her language, her mode of self
expression; however, it seems that Eliza possesses the intelligence, as well as the
sophistication to understand. Foster s emphasis on the value of language alerts the reader
to another movement in the novel, one that the reader might celebrate: the voice of her
society is awakened to its compromised public voice regarding virtue, honor, and
friendship. Eliza s queries on language throughout the novel are ultimately shifted to her
female circle, whose members recognize the need for their language to reflect more
clearly the reality of their world (Baker,

  • 2. Lord Of The Flies By William Golding Naz Usman Lord of the Flies William Golding Summer Essay In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, one of the scenes that I think is central to the development of the story is when Ralph and Piggy discover the conch shell on the beach and use it to summon the boys together after the crash. This scene has great importance to the plot of the story considering it was the first time the boys held a meeting and discussed their situation. They came up with a system that would eliminate chaos. For example, in their very first meeting, they voted on a chief, choosing Ralph over Jack because he was the one with the conch. This proves that the boys seem to think that power, responsibility, and leadership skills come from the conch. In reference
  • 3. Leadership Challenge, by Kouzes and Posner Essay In the Leadership Challenge, 4th edition, it is Kouzes Posner (2007) intention to present a road map for individuals to follow on their leadership journey. The authors stress that leadership is not a gene and it s not an inheritance. Leadership they assert is an identifiable set of skills and abilities that are available to all of us (p. 23). They make clear that the great person theory of leadershipis plain wrong. Leaders are our everyday heroes who do extraordinary things on a regular basis (p. 23). Empirically based, the writers begin the book by offering five practices of exemplary leadership: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act and Encourage the Heart (p. 14). In their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They have to enlist others in a common vision (p. 17). The challenge, Kouzes Posner says is to turn the idea into an inspired vision (p.106). The leader needs to imagine the possibilities and find a common purpose. The authors refer to James MacGregory Burns transformational leadership theory asserting that people commit to causes, not plans (p. 122). In order to have a transforming effect, the leader must raise the level of human conduct and ethical aspiration of both the leader and follower. Just like Kotter (1990) outlines the methods to change an organizational culture is by telling stories, using symbols, the designing of physical space, using jargon, rituals, etc., Kouzes Posner suggest the same thing when they explain the power in using symbolic language to communicate a shared identify and give life to a vision (p. 143). When challenging the process, leaders know that in order to bring change they have to experiment and take risk (p. 19). The authors indicate that proactive people tend to work harder ...[by being] persistent in achieving their goals (p. 169) and treat every job as an adventure (p. 184). Leadership is not a solo act, it s a team effort the authors explain (p. 223). To enable others to act the leader needs to create a climate of trust by facilitating relationships. To start the process one must, be the first to let go of control, Kouzes and Posner explain and it requires self confidence (p. 227). Just like Bass and Avolio (1980)
  • 4. Discovering Mortality in Once More to the Lake Essay Discovering Mortality in Once More to the Lake E. B. White s story Once More to the Lake is about a man who revisits a lake from his childhood to discover that his life has lost placidity. The man remembers his childhood as he remembers the lake; peaceful and still. Spending time at the lake as an adult has made the man realize that his life has become unsettling and restless, like the tides of the ocean. Having brought his son to this place of the past with him, the man makes inevitable comparisons between his own son and his childhood self, and between himself as an adult and the way he remembers his father from his childhood perspective. The man s experience at the lake with his son is the moment he discovers his own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would be in the middle of some simple act, I would be picking up a bait box or laying down a table fork, or I would be saying something and suddenly it would be not I but my father who was saying the words or making the gesture (White 151). When the man lay in bed early one morning, he heard his son sneak out to take a canoe out on the lake, just as he used to do when he was a child. By living a dual existence the man could see from two perspectives; his son sneaking out early in the morning, his father lying in bed listening to his son sneak out. I began to sustain the illusion that he was I, and therefore, by simple transposition, that I was my father (White 151). The man s alternate ways of viewing these events convinced him that he was becoming his father. This thought eventually leads to the man s realization that he will die someday, just as his father did. A thunderstorm came over the lake one day when the man was a child. He remembered swimming in the lake just after the storm passed, but while rain was still coming down. Just like the scene from his childhood, another thunderstorm came over the lake, only instead of swimming in the lake with the others, the man merely watched his son put on his bathing suit. I watched him, his hard little body, skinny and bare, saw him wince slightly

In his essay titled Manners , both student and teacher were to follow a list of duties. Students were to follow the list not only to obtain knowledge, but to know God. From this experiment, Bandura developed his Social Learning Theory, the theory that we learn from one another through observation. To prove his theory, Bandura used children to see if they would imitate a modal who showed aggressive behavior toward a Bobo doll. The subjects were 36 boys and 36 girls from the Stanford University s Nursery School aged between 3 and 6 years old. The models were two adults, male and female. Aggressive behavior was shown to 24 children, non aggressive behavior was shown to 24 children and 24 children served as the control group. For the first step of the experiment, a child and a model were brought into a room containing toys. The child was escorted to a corner that had potato prints and stickers while the model was escorted to a corner that had a tinker toy set, a mallet and a 5 foot inflated Bobo doll. For subjects that were in the aggressive condition, the model began aggressing toward the doll after a minute. The model performed distinct aggressive acts that Bandura was looking for the child to imitate. The model laid the doll on its side, sat on it and punched it repeatedly in the nose and then raised the doll, picked up the mallet and struck it on the head. Following the mallet aggression, the model tossed the doll up in the air and kicked it around the room. These aggressive acts were repeated three times, interspersed

After GM began to announce that the company will be closing it s location in Flint, Michigan and will be moving down to Mexico the whole city of Flint began to deindustrialize. About half of Flint was left unemployed. Due to a lot of people losing jobs, primarily from the GM company, more and more people were being evicted from their houses and going on welfare. Because of the outsourcing it lead to Flint becoming deindustrialized. A lot of the population was moving elsewhere, which is also why rental companies were running out of vans to rent, due to a high volume of people renting them. Neoliberalism also caused GM shut down its factory and move to Mexico. The Free trade agreement was very beneficial for Roger Smith where he can make more profit for the same amount of work. Smith also mentioned in the film that he would rather be paying Mexican s $0.70 versus paying the Americans more for the same labour. Neoliberalism is all about making profit even if you re at your highest profit point. In Smith s case it was for his own benefit to take advantage of the Free trade agreement to go down to Mexico where the company can make more profit. The two most renowned of these were Sparta and Athens Sparta for its military prowess and its campaign to usurp other smaller city states, and Athens, renowned for its cultural influence on the world at large, from architecture and philosophy to art and language. This paper looks at the different systems of government in the city states and how each one influenced the status of the state. Keywords: Monarchy, Aristocracy, Tyranny, Oligarchy, and Democracy Introduction: There four main forms of government that existed in Ancient Greece were monarchy (rule of one), oligarchy (rule of a few), tyranny (rule by force) and democracy (rule by many). Aristocracy in the context of this paper, was not so much a system of government but more of a hierarchy which allowed a citizen to rule. It was rare to find a commoner rising through the ranks to become a leader leaders were more often than not picked from the aristocratic class, those who by birth or social standing, became the elite of society. Monarchy: Monarchy is typically defined as rule by one person, often through birth right, who rules until death (in extreme cases a monarch can be deposed), wherein the first born son takes over the monarchy. Double blind controlled studies provide information on whether a drug is effective or if it is not better than placebo. The results of double blind studies usually depict the latter. Rarely are drugs found to be significantly more effective than placebo because of the placebo effect. The phenomenal effectiveness of the placebo in controlled experiments is mind boggling. The placebo effect occurs when the placebo, which can not on its own merit have any affect, does in fact have the same or similar affect as the experimental substance or procedure (1). However, some double blind control studies use active placebos. Active placebos contain compounds which warrant side effects so that the subject feels as though they are receiving therapeutic treatment. The efficacy of the placebo in experiments, commonly account from 30 40% and sometimes up to 75% or 80% (2). In the early 18th century, the word placebo was associated with quackery (3). Although the reason for the high success rate of the placebo is yet to be explained, experimenters have hypothesized plausible explanations for its effect. Advanced models attempting to explain placebo effects emphasize the role of expectations, anxiety and learning (3). The placebo effect illustrates the effectiveness of the physician s role in healing a patient. Past research show that a patient s high opinion of the physician prescribing the treatment (4) as well as the doctor s personality can invoke the placebo effect. Furthermore, research has shown that an amiable doctor with a positive outlook of a drug treatment would induce the placebo effect. The power of the placebo is more readily explained as a function of the individual because the

In the realm of Certified Nursing, I have become more intent on knowing more about the lifestyles of the people, and the good and bad results of daily tasks that ensure their happiness. Safety, and the many diseases/disorders that have been encountered by others, can only be counter acted by better knowledge, resources, and means of assurance in providing ways of increasing the (ADLs). While reading, I came across the disorder of Myocardial Infarctions, and found the information to be remarkably interesting. First of all, I learned that infarctions are commonly known for being obstructions of the blood supply to the organs and tissues; whether by the thrombus or embolous. This obstruction causes tissues to die. (Medicine Net, 2015).There s different kinds of infarctions, such as: Myocardial, Acute, Cerebellar, and Right Ventricular. Therefore, myocardial infarctions are irreversible necrosis of heart muscle, which are secondary to prolonged ischemia (emedicine, 2015). • 23. Castle Rackrent Essay Maria Edgeworth s Castle Rackrent is a satirical novel blaming the Irish people and the English Landlords for the plight of the Irish poor. She illustrates the comical ways of the drunks, and the way they act towards the Landlords. The Landlords on the other hand are careless men and women that control the towns. One example of Edgeworth s use of satire in Castle Rackrentinvolves the landlords and their lack of leadership abilities. Another example of satire in Castle Rackrent is Jason s inherent leadership abilities as an Irishman. Finally, another obvious use of satire is the language that is used by Maria Edgeworth. Another example of Edgeworth s satirizing English landlords is less obvious through Sir Murtaugh, who is a lawyer, and spends all of his money on his lawsuit which in the long run caused him to be in debt. Murtaugh also had no leadership amoung the landlords. Furthermore, Lady Skin Flint takes from the tenants, Thady says Her table the same way, kept for the next to nothing, duty fowls, and duty turkies, and duty geese, came as fast as we could eat em, for my lady kept a sharp look out, and knew to a tub of butter everything the tenants had, all round. When Sir Murtaugh died, but they were a set of poor wretches, and we had nothing but misfortunes with them, always breaking and running away. This, Sir Murtaugh and my lady said, was all their former landlord Sir Patrick s fault, who let em all get the half year s rent into arrear, there was something in that, to be sure. Edgeworth is also satirizing the English landlords through Murtaugh because Sir Murtaugh only takes from the tenants, which increase the desperate situation of the Irish people. Sir Kit s story is a satire because Edgeworth

  • 25. Diary Entry For Alaska Journal Entry Entry 1 I just set out on my great Alaskan adventure. This may not be my first day in Alaska but this definitely the start of my true adventure. I am alone out here. The only other living creatures here are the animals. I have prepared for this. I know I am ready. After leaving the last man who I hitchhiked with I set out on the trail. He offered me a sandwich that I am currently eating while sitting here and contemplating my surroundings. The land is vast and the stampede trail seems almost never ending. It is cold but not unbearable so. I plan to forage for dinner using my guides to find edible plants and berries. This may be my last big adventure I take on. The reason for that may be my own choice or the choice of nature. Things look good at the moment and I do not see a reason for that to change. I don t get lonely easily and I don t particular seek out human companionship, but I do feel as if I may start to miss some of the people who I have come to be attached to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I attempted to leave but I was forced to turn around because of an unexpected river. I am very weak, unable to accomplish the necessary tasks in order to survive out here. I am dying. If I do not get help soon I will be dead. I am not able to hunt and I fear I will soon start to lose my grip and succumb to starvation. I have very little to support myself and I am in a very unhealthy state. I believe this is caused by something I have eaten. All I can say at this point is I am happy I was able to experience this before I died. I was able to live up to the writing I gained my inspiration from. Like Huckleberry Finn and the premise of Jack London s novels I have rejected what I saw wrong with society and lived to my own accord. I am content with how I have lived my life over these last few years, and I believe I made the correct choice to come out here. I just truly hope I am able to receive help soon. So I guess this may be goodbye Alex

Eminent Domain Of Economic Development According to Bowman and Kearney, economic development is the process by which a community, state, or nation increases its level of per capita income, high quality jobs, and capital investment (Bowman Kearney, 2014, p. 370). Throughout our readings, it is presented that economic development exists because of the gradual decline of our metropolitans. More recently, it s been explained that economic developmenthas become a local issue that localities are attempting to resolve due to the stale mate federal government and partly the Great Recession, and doing this with a deteriorating taxbase in the form of population and jobs which increase the deteriorating infrastructure. When asked whether the tax breaks and subsidies actually created jobs, elected officials and economic development experts couldn t say for sure (Fulton, 2014, p. 171). Stadiums fall in this realm as well. Owners of the big four (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) have secured nearly $20 billion in taxpayer subsidies for new stadiums (DeMause, 2014, p. 73). In 1984, a study by Robert Baade on 30 cities with recent stadiums constructed found that 27 had no measurable economic impact, and in 3 cases, economic activity actually decreased. These findings have been repeated since then and tell the same story. A study on mega events like Super Bowls, South FL economist, Phil Porter found no measurable impact on spending which he attributed to the crowding out effect of non football tourists steering clear of town on game weeks (DeMause, 2014, p.
  • 27. Communicate A Universal Truth Analysis Don t we all have something in common? Well that s just how comedians have an effect to communicate a universal truth with their audience. Whether if its confusion, sickness, frustration we all have something that we can relate to and that is how comedians use this effect because we can relate to that feeling or subject. That s how a comedian can communicate a universal truth to us by using humor. Who s on First? No Who is on first!!!!! In that essay the universal truth was th at how confused and frustrated Costello was. We all can relate to that because more than likely all of us has been frustrated or confused before. That s part of the main reason we laugh because we can relate to it. The confusion and frustration is happening because
  • 28. Sisterhood In Lucy Baker s The Coquette The bond of female friendship is an important factor in the novel, especially since Eliza finds herself lonely without the companion of a female friend who might understand her plight; however, Eliza does not have a friend who understands her perils. All of the people in her life, with the exception of her mother, find Eliza beneath them. Eliza s thoughts and actions to some extent and helped the plot of novelto grow in a significant manner. Baker states that the theme of sisterhood remains prominent with Foster s work; however, the so called sisterhood is made up of petty, condemning ladies (Lucy Freeman and Julia Granby) whose idea of friendship revolves about social status and gossip, even concerning their dear friend (Foster, 127).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Boyer is condescending and demonstrates her idea of an excellent partner (27). Lucy, like most women at the time, found marriage to be a way of securing a socially and financially affluent future; her description of Mr. Boyer, whose taste, manners and morals, are highly regarded, supports the materialism of the time period. Baker finds that The Coquette is considered a tragic novel in that it depicts the seduction and fall of a young woman, and the reader can track the tragic disintegration of Eliza Wharton against her flagging commitment to precision and clarity in her language, her mode of self expression; however, it seems that Eliza possesses the intelligence, as well as the sophistication to understand. Foster s emphasis on the value of language alerts the reader to another movement in the novel, one that the reader might celebrate: the voice of her society is awakened to its compromised public voice regarding virtue, honor, and friendship. Eliza s queries on language throughout the novel are ultimately shifted to her female circle, whose members recognize the need for their language to reflect more clearly the reality of their world (Baker,
