To deny the power of music is a waste of an excellent source, one important and
extremely useful in the way we learn. Though some people would look at music as
a step forward in the progression of humanity, it is known to be a much stronger
force; and for some, it really defines their existence. Music is definitely a driving
force in society: it has been in existence since the beginning of human race. The
average human spends many hours a day listening to music, whether it s taken as a
main interest or just as something to satisfy us for the day. Music has and
certainly had a great effect on how we think and act, for all one knows, affecting
our intelligence. Music served a very functional role in the Revolutionary War.
Songs were written and sang for different reasons. Mainly, they were used to help
make people thrilled, emotional, make fun of the enemy, forget the terrible
realities of war. During the American Civil War, music played a distinguished role
on both sides of the conflict: the Union and the Confederate. At the time, on the
battlefield, a variety of instruments were being played to issue and lead marching
orders and even, at times, to simply boost the Sarkisyan 2 morale of a soldier.
Music was a major diversion from the slaughtering and killing going on, helping the
soldiers deal with their homesickness and boredom. WWI had a major impact, not

The Cage of Poverty In the short story Marigolds , the author, Eugenia Collier, uses
several key events throughout the short story to represent the unseen cage that the
main character, Lizabeth, is trapped in, and ultimately breaks. The story is set in a
shanty town, likely taking place during the Great Depression. Throughout the
story, Lizabeth goes through a difficult stage in life, a stage in which she is in
conflict about whether she wants to be a carefree, innocent child, or an educated,
compassionate adult. The climax of the story, when Lizabeth tears and rips up
Miss Lottie s marigolds, is such an emotional moment for Lizabeth that she finally
completes her transition to adulthood, understands her endless cycle of poverty,
and breaks the final bar of the cage. The author uses a seemingly endless cycle of
poverty to emphasize the cage in which the characters are trapped. As Lizabeth
muses over her childhood, she recalls the daily cycle of how each morning our
mother and father trudged wearily down the dirt road and around the bend, she to
her domestic job, he to his daily unsuccessful quest for work. (1). Every morning
began the same way, passed the same way, and ended the same way. Lizabeth feels
trapped, forced to go through the same series of events for what seems to be the
rest of her life, with the same people, in the same place. When the author pairs this
with the dusty setting of the town and the time placement of the Great Depression,
it creates an effect of hopelessness for the first part of the story. This is only
furthered by Lizabeth continually returning to the idea that Poverty was the cage in
which we were all trapped. (1). Lizabeth opens the story by first giving a
description of her hometown as dusty , remembering the poverty and hopelessness.
She then continues by referring to the cage of not having enough money, and the
cycle that it put them through, and ends by alluding to her future being limited to
her poverty. As the story progresses, so does Lizabeth. Having entered a difficult
stage of her identity, Lizabeth is unsure of whether to be an innocent, carefree child,
or to be a knowledgeable, aware adult. She begins to sense a change in the coming,

After being rescued by Nick, who saved her from the buried plane, Jo was flown to
hospice care center where she would live her somber last days. When Jo first
arrived she had an MRI that showed he extensive injuries: The MRI showed the

plane was buried. The plane was buried where no one could find it to possibly hide
something. Years ago in Casper, where Jo went missing, drug dealers consumed the
town and the people in it. I think that the plane that was buried was used to
transport drugs and that is why it was buried. It didn t matter who they would have
to kill on the plane as long as they got the plane buried and no saw what happened. I

Within the cultural context of society, the systematic structure is defined by White
male patriarchy that sanctions Black males to convey the way in which they have
been socialized and institutionalized to think, perform, and behave when self
identifying as male. However, the social order of society is structured by a historical
system centered among racebased superiority. This notion impedes the development
of a true independent identity. Consequently, a struggle arises for distinctiveness,
respect, and power. For Black men there becomes a conflict with who he is versus
how he is projected in society.
Although race conjures biological and phenotypical characteristics, there is no
necessary relationship. Yet, race is a social and historical process, it is both a
dimension of human representation and an element of social structure (Omi and
Winant 124). Subsequently, contention arises with the attempt to assimilate black

they do must be for the good of society? In the novel Brave New World, Aldous
Huxley uses literary devices such as diction and negative connotation to explore the
issues of brainwashing, relationships, and drug dependency and how these issues
affect society. He relates these issues back to real life problems in the 1930s like
racism, sexism and the great depression. When
Huxley wrote his novel in 1931 it was near the beginning of a worldwide depression.

proponent of raising a militia to revolt against the British due to its multiple

George Berkeley is considered one the greatest modern philosophers, yet when he
is studied he is seen as misguided and inaccurate. It seems that sometimes we study
his errors more than his achievements. Many critiques of Berkeley are results of

Johnson who lived around the same time as Berkeley. Johnson kicked a stone and
