The Causes Of Famine
Famine
With food production at an all time high, starvation should be at an all time low, but that is far
from the case. Unfortunately, famine is currently one of the main causes of death in third world
countries. In this essay I will look at the reasons for the famine, the consequences and compare the
ideas of food aid and sustainable livelihoods.
Famine causes malnutrition and death, in 2011, 260 000 people died of famine in Sudan and
Ethiopia. Over half of these were children. (Devi 2017) There is not one cause of famine in third
world countries, but instead multiple factors.
The idea that famine is due to food shortages is false, the world produces more food than we need,
but unfortunately those who need it do not have access to it. ... Show more content on

But if the crop fails, the merchant will be compensated, and receive a high share, while the
farmer will now be in debt. This is due to the sheil system in place. This prevents small farmers
from receiving money if their crop fails. This system is unfair as the sheil merchant sets the
amount of interest, so they will receive money either way, unlike the farmers who will only
receive a small amount if their crop is successful. (Lennart Olsson 1993) This contributed to the
famine as farmers are often in debt as many crops fail due to the drought. They then cannot afford
to by food for their family.
Food aid has become an important part to help the famine in third world countries.
But unfortunately, there is evidence to show that the food aid needs improvement.
A few of the problems said to be from food aid is that the is a) not enough, b) unevenly distributed
or c) is from the donors market.
In 2007 Sudan had a food aid shortfall of $120 million US dollars. (Wahlberg 2008) Because of
this the WFP had to cut food rations and send the aid to smaller areas. This leads into the next
issue, where the food is unevenly distributed. International media has a huge influence on what
crisis get funding, such as the tsunami in 2004 got such a large media coverage that there was a
lot of funding, but in other disasters, especially ones in the middle east, media coverage isn t as

How Does the United Nations Support Environmental...
Introduction
About the United Nations
The United Nations is an international organization, which was founded in 1945 after the Second
World War, committed to providing the means to help resolve international conflicts and formulate
policies on matters affecting human beings all over the world (Wikipedia). The organization is
committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among
nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights (Wikipedia).
Ensuring environmental sustainability , climate change being one of the major factors, is one of the
millennium development goals of the UN. The United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP,
along with many organizations/agencies under the UN, collaboratively work towards achieving this
goal.
About the Chosen Aspect of Study
How does the United Nations support the millennium development goal of promoting
environmental sustainability by limiting climate change in South and North America? This
investigation shall focus on the previously mentioned question as this a very interesting topic to
further research on, also as I believe that the UN has played an enormous role in promoting
environmental sustainability in South and North America, and therefore would make a good topic
to further research on. This topic is worthy of studying as by knowing of what many before us have
done to protect and sustain the environment, we can look into aiding the environment to a

Immigration Reform Strategies
STRATEGIES
1. Signing of petition for the creation of a new immigration reform. We would write a petition for
congress to aprove a comprehensive immigration reform. On this petition we will include all
documentation of our research, so the public and congrees can look at the numbers and the proof
that an immigration reform woul benefith Americans and immigrants.
2. Research and collect documentation about the real cost of deporting parents of American kids.
Deporting parents is counterproductive. The sicological trauma of kids been serarate of their
parents create the necesity of terapy and visits to doctors office that the government ends paying. In
the economic aspect the deportation of parents of american kids is also counterproductive

The Symptoms Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a syndrome that is caused from pressure on the median nerve in your
wrist. It can cause numbness, tingling, and other symptoms in your hand or arm. One of the
symptoms that you may have carpal tunnel syndrome is that you may have frequent burning,
tingling, or even itching in the palm of your hand and fingers, including in your thumb, index, and
middle fingers. Sometimes the symptoms may appear in either one or both of your hands during
the night, this is because some people might sleep with flexed wrists. If you have carpal tunnel
syndrome then there are some possible treatments people can take for the condition. Such as drugs,
exercise, and alternative therapies. If you experience some of the symptoms for the

Pro Bono Cons
Introduction The concept of mandatory pro bono and whether or not lawyers should be required to
participate in this public service has been the contentious subject of debate over recent years.
Focusing on Mirko Bagaric and Penny Dimopoulos statement: In our view not only do lawyers not
have a duty to act for free, but they are misguided in doing so and should, for the long term benefit
of the community, cease engaging in pro bono work, this essay will critically analyse the
implications of introducing mandatory pro bono into the legal profession by examining both the
positive and negative aspects through the issues of altruism, tradition, government funding and the
onus on small firms. Arguments for Mandatory Pro Bono The benefits of... Show more content on

Mirko Bagaric and Penny Dimopoulos argue that the introduction of mandatory pro bono will
only encourage the government to continue to decrease it s funding of legal aid services as the
government will further shirk the responsibility onto the legal profession. For example, the
current Australian budget has proposed yet another large decrease in government funding for
2017 2018, this includes the quarantining of some of the community legal centre funding.
Furthermore, it is not fair of the government to place an expectation on the legal to perform legal
services for free when there is no similar altruistic expectation placed on professional from other
areas, such as: physiotherapists, chiropractors, doctors and psychologists. All the services
provided by these other professions for free or at a discount are usually done so because the costs
are then subsidized by the government. The introduction of mandatory pro bono should not be seen
as a means for the government to avoid their responsibility to the legal community, instead if it is
to be introduce it would need to be followed by the agreement of the government to provide more
funding to legal

Gossiping About Masked Strangers
One day, my friend and I were gossiping, and as we walked down the hallway, we pointed to every
person we layed our eyes on and whispered, Fake. Fake. Fake. Fake. Fake. I giggled at our secretive
insult, but I lost focus for a second. In my head, I imagined a mirror. I saw myself a girl with a big
smile painted across her face. Then, this girlpointed to her own reflection. Fake.
Every day, my eyes scan this stupid place called high school a dark tunnel I never find light at the
end of. Here s a list of people I see:
1. Attention whores
Girl I Hate Number One with Girl I Hate Number Two, and their little hater ettes following close
behind. What s so great about them? It s obvious everyone loves them; no one hates or even
dislikes these bitches. But, the way they act on the outside doesn t cover up what s on the inside:
rude, bitter hatred. No one sees beyond this. They are viewed as the most gorgeous and fun girls
ever. Ugh.
2. Miss High School Burnout
The druggie alcoholic, yet still popular as ever, girl. I have no idea how someone with zero
morals gets so many friends. Clinging to her is her little freshman slave (premature attention
whore to the max) who everyone also likes, though I don t know why. The only thing Mary Jane
talks about is how high and wasted she gets. All. The. Time. Last weekend was killer shots after
shots after shots... Super baked right now... Up in the club with drinks and joints. How does no one

The Troubadours That Wrote About Fin Amor
The troubadours that wrote about fin amor had a certain set of rules for writing poems, but when
ChrГ©tien de Troyes began writing, he broke those rules. ChrГ©tien broke the rules of fin amor to
teach the readers about what true love should be using different components that were not
expressed in the troubadour s lais. Many critics wonder what these components are and why
ChrГ©tien broke the rules. Critic Kurtis Haas argues that ChrГ©tien was not trying to teach the
reader about lovebut write a story where chivalry teaches wisdom and critic Kathryn Gravdal
argues that ChrГ©tien did not break the rules of fin amor because all of the protagonists wanted
joy from maidens, while critic Douglas Kelly argues that honor was the component ChrГ©tien
was trying to teach his readers. All these arguments fall short, however, and I argue that
ChrГ©tien broke the rules of fin amor to teach the readers about what true love should be by
adding different components into his stories including psychology, fame and different types of
violences. ChrГ©tien breaks the rules of fin amor in order to teach the readers about true love by
adding the component of psychology to his characters. ChrГ©tien immediately breaks the rule of
fin amor early in the story by allowing Erec and Enideto get married. ChrГ©tien uses psychology
to portray what fin amor should be by showing the emotions behind a character who is both a lover
and a partner in marriage. ChrГ©tien first used psychology when Enide said, I know

The Negative Aspects Of Social Media
A picture is worth their pride. A picture is worth their self esteem. A picture is worth their
dignity. Social media networking has become a large part of today s society. Media applications
such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat are rising in popularity, not only amongst
teens, but adults as well. According to Pew Research Center, in 2015, 65% of American adults
now use social networking sites up from 7% back in 2005 (Perrin). Bringing people from all
over the world together, social media sites have made it easier for people to communicate and
interact on all different levels. Controversy still arises among the negative aspects of social
media apps and how its usage affects people, particularly young adolescents. Sociological and
psychological literature on the phenomenon of media effects has shown that exposure to media
depictions of the thin ideal can have damaging effects for women (Groesz, et al 1 16). The ease
of access to thousands of pictures that have been photoshopped, edited and altered, tweets and
Facebook posts makes it hard for young adolescents to distinguish reality from fiction. They seek
validation and want to be liked, so they don t have to go further than the tip of their fingers to get
this as they scroll the pages of Instagram and Facebook. In a Huffington Post article, by Jill P.
Weber, she stated, Girls turn to these sites to figure out who they are, what they should look like,
who they should try to be and how they can make themselves

Poverty In Poverty And Poverty
As a main theme in Hunger and Shame, child malnutrition is a serious problem that has affected
many different societies. Child malnutrition is a complicated concept that often has many causes;
each society is different and must be studied closely to fully understand the reason for such a
horrific epidemic. Focusing on the Chagga population, many factors catalyzed the epidemic
including environmental, cultural, and global. Coffee is a major cash crop of Chagga farmers (p.
xi) and a large portion of the economic profit, but what happens when drought and coffee berry
disease hit the Chagga society. Environmental problems such as these became a large problem
facing many people of the Chagga. Much of the rich farm land on Mt. Kilimanjaro inhabited
coffee trees and therefore leaving less space for individual gardens. When coffee berry disease and
drought affected the production of Tanzanias major export, people such as the Chagga were left with
a food shortage, therefore introducing another environmental problem: famine. Although families
could maintain home gardens with the small amount of land available, it rarely was enough to
satisfy the whole family. Yet Chagga farmers were not permitted to convert coffee farming land
into land for personal farming. Another large cause of sickness came from the bacteria ridden
water. Women did not boil the water upon giving it to their young. A lot of people have heard don
t drink the water in Mexico . Well this was a similar situation

1930-1940 Essay
1930 1940
The 1930s brought a very turbulent time to the United States. As a result of the Stock Market
Crash of 1929, the nation was experiencing a severe depression. There were hard class divisions
dividing the nation. People were either extremely rich or extremely poor. The middle class simply
did not exist (Bondi 97). On March 4, 1933 Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office with the promise
of hope and relief for struggling Americans. Roosevelt followed up his promise for help with the
New Deal, his plan to combat the depression. The New Deal involved the three R s: relief, recovery
and reform. It included measures concerning banking, securities, industry, and agriculture (Bondi
97).
Roosevelt won reelection in 1936 and the economy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This led to World War II which began on September 3, 1939 when Great Britain and France
declared war on Germany (Bondi 22). Also in the 1930s, the Hindenburg exploded in the air
killing thirty six passengers. The Hindenburg was a blimp that provided trans Atlantic air service
between Germany and America. The explosion was a great blow to the prestige of the Nazi regime
(Kirshon 676).
In the 1930s, Surrealism developed in art with an emphasis on content and free form (Brittanica).
As a part of the surrealist movement, Salvador Dali painted Persistence of Memory. However,
Dali was expelled from Europe s Surrealists for his support of Franco in the Spanish civil war
(Burne 996). In the United States, art was depicting regions. Regionalism was an artistic or literary
style that was tied to American landscape. Painters such as Grant Wood and John Stuart Curry
painted the landscape while writers such as Steinbeck and Farrell wrote about specific regions in
their works (Bondi 44). Depression Modernism also developed in the United States. This movement
brought gleaming black glass, black Vitrolite, chrome, Micarta, and peach tinted mirrors (Grief 1).
According to the author, Streamlining became the vogue in furniture and clothing, clocks, and
typewriters, toasters, and vacuum cleaners, but especially in houses, public buildings, airplanes,
railway trains, and automobiles (Greif 193). Russell Wright was an artist that took part in this
unique movement

first time. I ve always taken love very sincere. So I bit my tongue. I hid my feelings. I waited for

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Analysis
The Myers Briggs type indicator is a personality test used to make the psychological types
described by C.G. Jung more understandable and relevant to people s lives. The personality test
shows that random deviations in behavior are essentially not so random at all, but how people use
their perception and judgment. There are sixteen, distinctive personality types, that can result
from the choices of preferences. (Foundation, The Myers Briggs) According to theory, by
definition, one pole of each of the four preferences is preferred over the other pole for each of the
sixteen MBTI types. The preferences on each index are independent of preferences for the other

Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Lightships
Lightships are manned seamarks anchored at a specific point of a river, generally a shallow one.
Fixed into place by a mushroom shaped anchor, these small ships (rarely above 50 tons) would
initially use large lanterns affixed atop the main mast. Their main advantage is that they could be
placed in areas where it was impossible for lighthouses to act as efficient seamarks. Their main
disadvantage, especially the early ones, is that turbulent waters could slightly shift the anchor and
thus the ship s positioning (Talbot 1913, pp. 241 42). In the worst case scenario, the chains could
snap, leaving the ship in a dire position. However, introduced in the early 19th century were
numerous lighting inventions (Clarke 2016, pp. 14, 42) as well as mooring technologies using iron,
which could anchor a vessel 12 to 14 times the tonnage of the largest lightship (Clarke 2016, pp. 50
56), made them increasingly reliable over time. Ubiquitous to seafarers, their offshore position
meant that lightships were out of eyesight of the majority of the population, which explains why
they went largely unnoticed, even by most economists and historians including Coase, who studied
lighting services. Yet, lightships featured prominently in the frequently cited 1834 Report from the
Select Committee on Lighthouses. In fact, of the 55 lights in England, 13 were provided by
floating lights (House of Commons 1834, p. VI). As such, lightships were an important contributor
to lighting services. What

A Class Divided Reflection
Diversity in Society
Everyone is likely to experience some form of discrimination or prejudice; as is anyone capable of
acting prejudiced towards others. On April 5th, 1968, a teacher in Riceville, Iowa named Jane
Elliot conducted an experiment with her third grade class that dealt with the concept of
discrimination; and was documented in Peters 1985 A Class Divided . The exercise originally
took place the day after Martin Luther King was assassinated. The documentary is an eye opener to
the world of racism and discrimination. Bucher (2010) describes racism as discrimination based on
the belief that one race is superior to another (97). According to Bucher (2010) discrimination is

kick their children, like one brown eyed boy s father had done the prior week. But when blue

Susan, whom has brown eyes, remembered her glasses. Elliot also led the children to decide
that since blue eyed Greg said he likes to hit his litter sister, this conveys blue eyed people are
naughty. From here, we witness some of superior blue eyed kids began to act arrogant and bossy
to the inferior brown eyed kids. Blue eyed Russell was taunting John at recess, calling him
brown eyes and John retaliated by hitting him. After the two boys fought at recess the teacher
asked if responding with violence made him feel better, he replied no. His answer goes to show
that responding with violence is ineffective and a waste of time and energy. They compared it to
someone calling a black man the N word. Even academic achievement goes up when the children

John Locke s Theory Of Personal Identity And Diversity
Edin Hodzic
Philosophy Final Paper

Homicidal Somnambulism
Imagine that one night you end up sleepwalking and end up killing someone. Sounds crazy doesn t
it? Things like this have actually happened. There are now 68 known cases of homicidal
somnambulism. (BBC) . Homicidal somnambulism is the act of murdering someone while in the
state of sleepwalking. The legal argument for this has been that the defendant was not in their
normal state of mind while this has happened and therefore cannot be blamed for such a crime.
Locke is known to believe in his theory of personal identity and diversity. Locke s theory talks
about consciousness and how our consciousness makes our identity through our experiences.
Locke states that we are only considered guilty of committing a crime if we were aware of it and
remember doing it. Although I agree with Locke in some terms regarding our identity having
something to do with our consciousness, I do not fully agree.
One of the problems that comes to mind with this to me is how could we prove that someone was
actually sleepwalking and that they are unaware of their actions. Can we trust them and take their
word for it or is there a scientific way in which we can prove it.
Locke distinguishes between man and person. Locke s theory talks about consciousness and how
our consciousness makes our identity through our experiences. A person can be conscious, self
aware and rational. Consciousness to Locke is awareness of our body and

Influences Of Plato s Republic, Plato, And Marcus Aurelius
A leader is an explorer, cutting a path through the jungle for the rest of his group to follow,
(Team). The goal of a leader should be to set an example, and standard for others. The well
known, Machiavelli, Plato, and Marcus Aurelius have varying opinions of what a leader should
be. Only one view of a leader that I can agree with correlates with the voice of Aurelius most.
Despite this, I must admit that Machiavelli s and Plato s writings of the Prince and Republic
offers a few point that can be validated. The writings of Plato s Republic, Machiavelli s Prince, and
Aurelius s Meditationsall contain a visions of a leader, but the descriptions of Aurelius are more
closely related to what a leader is. There are three impactful minds that affect how people perceive
the essence of a leader, and they are Machiavelli, Plato and Marcus Aurelius. In Plato s Republic,
Plato describes what he believes a leader to possess. He describes a leader to be the person who
understands the forms, and seeks the truth. He calls that person a philosopher king, or a joyful
shepherd of sheep. This man/woman is able to determine what is real and what is not. With this
ability they are able to lead people with a selflessness that cannot be matched by the other two
figures. Moving on to Marcus Aurelius s outlook, the differences show through plainly. Aurelius
begins with the definition of stoicism, which is a Greek philosophy that teaches the development of
self control and fortitude as a means

The Black Cat And The Fall Of The House Of Usher
There are a multitude of purposes for gothic literary elements to be used within fictional stories.
The interconnectedness of the elements such as a fascination with the past leading to isolation or
the presence of the supernatural causing someone to obtain a fear of the unknown allows
Gothicism as a whole to span over a wide range of effects within a story. In many cases, gothic
elements are used to either prove or disprove the innate evil of humankind or the circumstances of
which they live amongst. Similarly, Edgar Allen Poe s The Black Cat and The Fall of the House
of Usher, as well as Gillian Flynn s Sharp Objects can be related in that each story uses the gothic
elements of psychological issues and violence to further enhance the... Show more content on

After some investigation, Camille uncovers that the death of her younger sister, Marian, was
due to her mother poisoning her in order to make people see her as a selfless, innocent woman,
who did nothing but care for her children. It can be inferred from the development of the plot that
Adora s strange mental case of Munchausen by Proxy(MBP), in which she harms her own
children to gain sympathetic attention, can be correlated entirely to the reason Camille has
been self harming herself by cutting words onto her body since she was a teenager. The fact that
every time people said [Camille] was pretty, [she] thought of everything ugly swarming beneath

to see herself as beautiful after everything that has been done to harm her. Realizing that being

continuously ugly thoughts as she did in her past, Camille began to not only investigate violence,
but dream of it as well. For example, she once tells of a violent dream in which Adora had cut

Pros And Cons Of Deism
My opinions on Deism are very mixed. I can see why it a solid option for people to think because, it
can seem like a more logical approach on life and is a belief that requires little faith. It is more of a
way of thinking than a way of living life, but also I can see a few cracks in their system. This
may sound a little absurd, but it seems like a cover of up somebody s interest in God that is not
fully ready for the commitment of living by faith. It could also be somebody scared to change
their life or be viewed differently because of the belief they have chosen. But, whatever the reason
is to belief in DeismI do have to give them props from making the effort from atheism; the belief in
nothing, into Deism; the belief that God has created the world but... Show more content on

Yes, I understand we have choices that we make in different situations but if Deists believe that
we are just pieces of this giant time line, how exactly do we have free will? That means not
matter what decision we are going to make, the world and time its self going to stay on course.
Essentially that we do not have any sort of impact on our lives. Which would eliminate free will,
because no matter what we do in our lives, we are always going to be lined up the way the

Common themes touched on by many managers that were interviewed who had implemented
organizational rules centered on order in the firm and the stability that organizational rules provide
for worker manager relations. The strengths of the program made the global aspect of the company
be more adjacent to the understanding what they really needed to work on to make the company
be more efficient and successful. McDonald s LAMP program is a great start for the company to
have the right people in place to understand the positions that were expected of them to keep the
organization on the move. The LAMP program had 5 key components which included executive
assessment and program orientation; 2. Individual development planning and executive dialogues;
3. Leadership modules focused on leadership of self, team, and organization with experiential
exercise to reinforce the learning; 4. A two week executive education program with a focus on

Euclid Essay
EUCLID: The Man Who Created a Math Class
Euclid of Alexandria was born in about 325 BC. He is the most prominent mathematician of
antiquity best known for his dissertation on mathematics. He was able to create The Elements
which included the composition of many other famous mathematicians together. He began
exploring math because he felt that he needed to compile certain things and fix certain postulates
and theorems. His book included, many of Eudoxus theorems, he perfected many of Theaetetus s
theorems also. Much of Euclid s background is very vague and unknown. It is unreliable to say

There is a thought that he was able to build up a school in Alexandria that was very vigorous and
unique in its own way.
Euclid s most famous work is his dissertation on mathematics The Elements. The book was a
compilation of knowledge that became the center of mathematical teaching for 2000 years.
Probably Euclid first proved no results in The Elements but the organization of the material and
its exposition are certainly due to him. In fact there is ample evidence that Euclid is using
earlier textbooks as he writes the Elements since he introduces quite a number of definitions,
which are never used such as that of an oblong, a rhombus, and a rhomboid. This book first
began the book by giving the definition of five postulates. The first three are based upon
constructions. For example, the first one is that a straight line can be drawn between two points.
These three postulates also describe lines, circles, and the existence of points and the possible
existence of other geometric objects. The fourth and fifth postulates are written in a different
nature. Postulate four states that all right angles are equal. The fifth one is very famous. It is also
can be referred to as the parallel, the fifth parallel. It states that one and only one line can be drawn
through a point parallel to a given line. His decision to create this

Theme Of Self Image In 12 Angry Men
Self image is a largely talked about issue. From negative to positive outlooks, it can be seen in
most magazines, heard on most talk shows, and is mentioned in almost every article on the
internet. The 1957 MGM film Twelve Angry Men compels the characters in the film and the
audiences to view their own self image when making a decision on the guilt of an eighteen year
old boy who is accused of killing his father. By using logic, reflection, and attitude, the movie
shows each of the characters to review their views and beliefs and how they see themselves and
others. During the film, logic was required on everyone s part. They were deciding on an eighteen
year old kid s life! It was not a decision to be made quickly. Mr. Davis realizes this and is the only
one to vote not guilty when taking the first vote (Lumet). Logic came into play because Mr.
Davis thought logically about all of the evidence presented and because of this he felt that there
was a reasonable doubt and could therefore, not sentence the young man. Throughout the rest of
the film, we see more of the men thinking logically, for example, when Juror Nine realizes that
the woman who claims she witnessed the murder, wore glasses and would not have been able to
clearly see the boy if she claimed to be laying in bed trying to fall asleep. Another example is
when juror number five, who grew up in the same area of town that the defense did, shows the
proper way of using a switchbladeknife, making a logical

The Liberty Bell, Washington Monument, The Bald Eagle
The symbols of this great nation are many. The Liberty Bell, Washington Monument, the Bald
Eagle, the White House, and the document that is the foundation on which this country is built, the
Constitution of the United States. These symbols are immediately recognized by the citizens of
the United States and some internationally, however the one symbol that is universally recognized
is the Stars and Stripes. It is the symbol of a free nation whose citizens are allowed to strive for
the American dream, the ability to achieve success through hard work, regardless of race, creed, or
religious beliefs. Such a symbol should be held sacred and beyond reproach. Defacing the White
House, harming a Bald Eagle, or burning the Constitution are considered felony offenses, however
desecrating the American Flag is protected under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Standing on, defacing, and burning of the flag by U.S. citizens only creates public unrest and
should not be allowed.
The Constitution, now comprised of 27 amendments, started out with 10. The First Amendment of
the Constitution states Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the

This device was one of the best, because it did not give the audience, other speakers, or even

Finally, Will McAvoy uses the rhetorical device Dysphemism in his speech. Dysphemism is when
the speaker uses an offensive or detrimental phrase deliberately used in place of a nicer one. The
Dysphemism that McAvoy uses was towards the young college girl that asked him the question in
the first place, And you sorority girl yeah just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth

evidence to support the statement that we re the greatest country in the world. By McAvoy calling

seems as if McAvoy thinks that college students are the reason for America s downfall. He does

Tituba Salem Witch Trial
The Salem Witch Trials were a tragic event that echoed throughout history. Twenty lives were taken
in 1691 and 1692. Over 150 others were accused and thrown in prison and even more have been
haunted by this hardship.
Although most of the cases for the Salem Witch Trials were fake, they could ve easily been prank
that went too far, or grudges against neighbors. Despite all of the rumors, there is one accusation
that will never be dropped. An Indian slave, Tituba. Tituba was the first to be accused of witchcraft
in Salem Village. She was brought before a court and confessed under pressure the names of two
other witches , Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. The framed women were accused of bewitching

and continued to hang another 18 people. Five in July, another five in August, and 8 in
September. Giles Corry, a 71 year old man was even crushed to death. He would not plead guilty

Scientists have looked at the Salem Witch Trials and have pondered what could have caused the

which can be found in wheat( the main crop grown in Salem Village). Ergot thrives in warm, wet

Two Contrasting Places In A Tale Of Two Cities
The inclusion of two contrasting places is an effective way for an author to represent motifs. For
example in F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby, West Egg and East Egg are utilized to
represent old and new money and the beliefs and values that the people from these places posses.
Through thorough a comparison and contrast of these places much can be learned that may have
been missed without considering what each place represents which allows for enhancement of the
novel as a whole. Specifically, in A Tale of Two Cities
by Charles Dickens, the setting takes place in
both London and Paris. In Paris turmoil is present as the average citizens plan to overthrow the
French government for their harsh rule, and in London peace and a sense of normalness... Show

Through this comparison it can be inferred that although there are differences between the cities,
there is homogeneity between them as well. There were a king with a large jaw, and a queen
with a plain face, on the throne of England; there were a king with a large jaw, and a queen with
a fair face, on the throne of France (Dickens 13). The idiom used to describe the two kings
exemplifies the similarities between England and France; both countries were ruled by harsh
authoritative rule. Dickens later illustrates this by satirizing the judicial systems in the two
countries. Dickens describes Darnay s trial in London in a way that gives the impression that
the only reason Darnay is guilty is because the jury is loyal to the attorney general and the
attorney general finds Darnay guilty. The jury, being a loyal jury ( as he knew they were), and
being a responsible jury (as they knew they were), must positively find the prisoner guilty, and
make and end of him, whether they liked it or not (Dickens 74). This underscores the
discredibility of the judicial system by entailing that the jury and people in the court to see
someone get killed. Nevertheless, the judicial system in Paris compared to London was
unquestionably exceedingly atrocious. Once convicted of a crime it was ascertained that that
person would be beheaded. There was a higher chance of pigs flying than being proven innocent.
Through the quotation, There were twenty three names, but only twenty were responded to; for
one of the prisoners so summoned had died in gaol and been forgotten, and two had already been
guillotined and forgotten (Dickens 278), Dickens is able to personify the inhumanity in Paris.
Essentially, there were so many people that were being killed that often times it would go
unrecognized if someone on the list was already killed. By

Christ, the Paradigm of Leadership
Discussions in what makes effective leaders are ones as long as history itself. It is a topic of
constant study and debate where everyone seems to have a view and where definitions of
leadership are as varied as their explanations. More recent day definitions and studies have
focused on leadership and change, vision building and empowering others. Thus, leaders are
people who are able to think and act creatively in non routine situations and who set out to
influence the actions, beliefs and feelings of others. In this sense being a leader is personal. It
flows from an individual s qualities and actions. However, it is also often linked to some other

In this regard the shepherd of the Lord s flock leads by modeling godliness and righteousness in
his own life and encourages others to follow his example.
Deuteronomy 8:3 states: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the
mouth of the Lord. We as sheep need nourishment to be strong and vibrant Christians. This
nourishment comes from one place and one place only The Holy Bible. The Bible, not the
psychology of the world s wisdom, is the only nourishment that can sustain a healthy Christian
lifestyle. Serving as our Good Shepherd, Christ will lead us to the most lush pastures and abundant
streams.
Many Christians throughout history have faced persecution, have had to deal with temptation
and have been wounded by spirits that mean to deter us from maximizing our spiritual potential.
A shepherd, knowing one of his sheep is ailing, shows compassion and love towards his sheep.
The Lord has promised us that he will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak . (Ezekiel
34:16) As Christians today, we suffer many injuries to our spirits and need compassionate leaders
who understand our pain and are willing to listen to our concerns. Becoming a servant leader
requires a great deal of motivation, feedback, and extended practice, as does any worthwhile
discipline. We are in need of leaders who will help bear our burden, and sympathize with our unique
circumstances.

Alexander At Issus
The artworks I am going to write about are The Battle of Alexander at Issus by Albrecht
Altdorfer, and Third of May,1808 by Francisco Jose de Goya. While The Battle of alexander at
Issus is an example of Northern Renaissance, and Third of May, 1808 is an example of Romantic
art. Both these artworks are important as they both share the theme of War, but the outcome is
completely contrasting. The use of colors in both these works are also completely opposite and it
prove further how the same theme can be depicted in completely different ways by artists belonging
to different periods.

Romantic Era was more expressionistic and was facing very turbulent times, which is very evident
in the forbiddingly dark artwork by Goya. Even though the main theme is about war in both these
paintings, the different eras and the different society inspired two very different outcomes. In The
Battle of Issus Altdorfer uses nature to convey harmony, and the victory of man over man. The
celestial drama above the vast landscape correlated with the human contest below raises the scene
to a cosmic level. The painting is full of bright, wonderful, and creative images that easily amaze
people the more they look at it. Although the ant like people fill the painting with chaos and the

in spite of being emplyed by the Court, remained a revolutionary. He hated authority in any form:

industrial unions and craft unions attempt to raise their members wages, but each goes about it
differently. Explain the difference in approaches and describe the impact these differences have on
excess quantity of labor supplied. Answer Craft unions have frequently forced employers to agree
to hire only union members, thereby gaining virtually complete control of the labor supply. Then,
by following restrictive membership policies such as limiting the number of new members getting
admitted, they artificially restrict labor supply. Therefore, by excluding workers from union and
therefore from the labor supply, crafts union succeed in elevating wage rates. An industrial union
that includes virtually all available workers in its membership can put п¬Ѓrms under great pressure
to agree to its wage demands. Because of its legal right to strike, such a union can threaten to
deprive п¬Ѓrms of their entire labour supply, and an actual strike can do just that. 9. Why do you
think the role of the unions in the US has declined over the years? Briefly discuss. Answer The
role of labor unions in the U.S has declined over the years because of strong government policies,
unfavorable working and law environment for labors, increased labor hostility, and high levels of
unfair labor practices. The Taft Hartley Act of 1947 placed draconian

Dances With Wolves Stereotypes
Overcoming Stereotypes in the Movie, Dances With Wolves
Everyone has a preconceived opinion of how a certain ethnic group is in terms of the way they
live, the morals they hold, the way they deal with people different from them, and how they deal
with one another. We come to these conclusions by what we have seen in the media, heardfrom
other people, or actually experienced ourselves. Most people would consider these opinions to be
stereotypes. Dances with Wolves is a motion picture that deals with and touches on all sides of
personal stereotypes we as American and American Indianshave about each other. John Dunbar
takes us through and allows us to see how it is to come into a situation he was not familiar with and
then eventually the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also came across intimidated by John because of his courage through this miserable time. He
saw Dunbar as someone he could never be and he didn t see his life worth living anymore.
Going into the movie we did not really get a strong sense of how Dunbar thought of the Indians.
While he was journeying out to the frontier Dunbar asked Timmons, a man that was taking him
there, what he thought about Indians. With no hesitation at all Timmons stated that they were all
thieves, murderers, and savages. Dunbar didn t ever state what he thought of the Indians. I got the
impression that he really did not have an opinion about them because he has never dealt with them.
He seemed like the type of guy that would not assume something without experiencing it for
himself. Everyone he talked to about Indians probably said the same things Timmons did, but for
some reason Dunbar was different from the rest. He seemed to be better than that.
The Indians are finally presented in the movie by the screen scanning across a wide open desert
very peaceful and deserted. In the middle of all this silence the camera fell upon a skeleton of a
human that we assume the Indians killed. This is how the movie sets the tone for how we are going
to think about the Indians. They play with the stereotype that all us Americans think are true about
the Indians. At first we think that we were right, but the story does not end there.
The first encounter that Dunbar has with the Indians is when

Essay on Rent Control
There is a reason for everything, and if there is no reason to do something, most people will not
do it. For example, if there is no incentive to motivate landlords to upkeep their property and
make it the best it can be, they will left their properties at the lowest manageable state they can get
away. Rent ceiling laws are an example of how lack of motivation and incentives can discourage
people from making sure their best work and resources go into their product or whatever they are
doing. These laws impose limitations on the amount landlords can charge their tenants for staying
in their properties. This causes the landlords to lose the amount of money they should have made
on their property, and the landlords will not be motivated to... Show more content on

The obstacles landlords have to overcome causes them to lose their motivation to invest in rental
properties and they instead flock towards other housing options to include condominiums, office
towers, and hotels.
In short, lack of motivation in exchange for more red tape causes investors and landlords to
move towards more profitable options. This movement of money and resources tends to
negatively impact people trying to find a place to live, most notably the poor. The National Multi
Housing Council (NMHC) states that prospective customers must pay finder fees to find a rental
property due to a presumably growing scarcity of available housing. As if this were not bad
enough, in some communities rental properties are handed down to friends and family, so they
never quite leave the market. In order to obtain housing, new consumers are forced to pay key
money and other fees. These costs tend to impact young, single, and poor families the most.
As if all of the more or less hidden fees were not bad enough, young, single, and poor families able
to find a rental property are often discriminated against. Landlords tend to use factors such as
income and credit history in determining who gets their rental property Richer families end up
doing better with rent control laws because of this. Poorer people who make up a larger part of the
population end up out of a house to live in.
Some economists would argue the above mentioned examples of why rent control is harmful to

Snowball Fight Essay
POW! At what seems like 100 miles per hour it hits you! The cold snow running down your back,
chills form on your arm. Then, another one! Quickly you dodge it, then grab your own and send it
flying back. Wow, you think, snowball fights are extreme. This snowball fight was the best I ever
had. We were throwing snowballs across the street, hitting houses and laughing as we do so.
Running in the snow we began the fight! Each team building a snow fort bigger and better than
the other teams. Unfortunately in all of that chaos my team accidentally built our fort in the
neighbor s yard! Luckily, we fixed their yard up before they got home. Before we knew it the fight
began, and I was the first to get hit. The icy snow hit me right in the face

  • 2. The Causes Of Famine Famine With food production at an all time high, starvation should be at an all time low, but that is far from the case. Unfortunately, famine is currently one of the main causes of death in third world countries. In this essay I will look at the reasons for the famine, the consequences and compare the ideas of food aid and sustainable livelihoods. Famine causes malnutrition and death, in 2011, 260 000 people died of famine in Sudan and Ethiopia. Over half of these were children. (Devi 2017) There is not one cause of famine in third world countries, but instead multiple factors. The idea that famine is due to food shortages is false, the world produces more food than we need, but unfortunately those who need it do not have access to it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But if the crop fails, the merchant will be compensated, and receive a high share, while the farmer will now be in debt. This is due to the sheil system in place. This prevents small farmers from receiving money if their crop fails. This system is unfair as the sheil merchant sets the amount of interest, so they will receive money either way, unlike the farmers who will only receive a small amount if their crop is successful. (Lennart Olsson 1993) This contributed to the famine as farmers are often in debt as many crops fail due to the drought. They then cannot afford to by food for their family. Food aid has become an important part to help the famine in third world countries. But unfortunately, there is evidence to show that the food aid needs improvement. A few of the problems said to be from food aid is that the is a) not enough, b) unevenly distributed or c) is from the donors market. In 2007 Sudan had a food aid shortfall of $120 million US dollars. (Wahlberg 2008) Because of this the WFP had to cut food rations and send the aid to smaller areas. This leads into the next issue, where the food is unevenly distributed. International media has a huge influence on what crisis get funding, such as the tsunami in 2004 got such a large media coverage that there was a lot of funding, but in other disasters, especially ones in the middle east, media coverage isn t as high therefore ... Introduction About the United Nations The United Nations is an international organization, which was founded in 1945 after the Second World War, committed to providing the means to help resolve international conflicts and formulate policies on matters affecting human beings all over the world (Wikipedia). The organization is committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights (Wikipedia). Ensuring environmental sustainability , climate change being one of the major factors, is one of the millennium development goals of the UN. The United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, along with many organizations/agencies under the UN, collaboratively work towards achieving this goal. About the Chosen Aspect of Study How does the United Nations support the millennium development goal of promoting environmental sustainability by limiting climate change in South and North America? This investigation shall focus on the previously mentioned question as this a very interesting topic to further research on, also as I believe that the UN has played an enormous role in promoting environmental sustainability in South and North America, and therefore would make a good topic to further research on. This topic is worthy of studying as by knowing of what many before us have done to protect and sustain the environment, we can look into aiding the environment to a ... • 6. Pro Bono Cons Introduction The concept of mandatory pro bono and whether or not lawyers should be required to participate in this public service has been the contentious subject of debate over recent years. Focusing on Mirko Bagaric and Penny Dimopoulos statement: In our view not only do lawyers not have a duty to act for free, but they are misguided in doing so and should, for the long term benefit of the community, cease engaging in pro bono work, this essay will critically analyse the implications of introducing mandatory pro bono into the legal profession by examining both the positive and negative aspects through the issues of altruism, tradition, government funding and the onus on small firms. Arguments for Mandatory Pro Bono The benefits of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mirko Bagaric and Penny Dimopoulos argue that the introduction of mandatory pro bono will only encourage the government to continue to decrease it s funding of legal aid services as the government will further shirk the responsibility onto the legal profession. For example, the current Australian budget has proposed yet another large decrease in government funding for 2017 2018, this includes the quarantining of some of the community legal centre funding. Furthermore, it is not fair of the government to place an expectation on the legal to perform legal services for free when there is no similar altruistic expectation placed on professional from other areas, such as: physiotherapists, chiropractors, doctors and psychologists. All the services provided by these other professions for free or at a discount are usually done so because the costs are then subsidized by the government. The introduction of mandatory pro bono should not be seen as a means for the government to avoid their responsibility to the legal community, instead if it is to be introduce it would need to be followed by the agreement of the government to provide more funding to legal ... Fake. Fake. I giggled at our secretive insult, but I lost focus for a second. In my head, I imagined a mirror. I saw myself a girl with a big smile painted across her face. Then, this girlpointed to her own reflection. Fake. Every day, my eyes scan this stupid place called high school a dark tunnel I never find light at the end of. Here s a list of people I see: 1. It s obvious everyone loves them; no one hates or even dislikes these bitches. But, the way they act on the outside doesn t cover up what s on the inside: rude, bitter hatred. No one sees beyond this. They are viewed as the most gorgeous and fun girls ever. Ugh. 2. Miss High School Burnout The druggie alcoholic, yet still popular as ever, girl. • 8. The Troubadours That Wrote About Fin Amor The troubadours that wrote about fin amor had a certain set of rules for writing poems, but when ChrГ©tien de Troyes began writing, he broke those rules. ChrГ©tien broke the rules of fin amor to teach the readers about what true love should be using different components that were not expressed in the troubadour s lais. Many critics wonder what these components are and why ChrГ©tien broke the rules. Critic Kurtis Haas argues that ChrГ©tien was not trying to teach the reader about lovebut write a story where chivalry teaches wisdom and critic Kathryn Gravdal argues that ChrГ©tien did not break the rules of fin amor because all of the protagonists wanted joy from maidens, while critic Douglas Kelly argues that honor was the component ChrГ©tien was trying to teach his readers. All these arguments fall short, however, and I argue that ChrГ©tien broke the rules of fin amor to teach the readers about what true love should be by adding different components into his stories including psychology, fame and different types of violences. ChrГ©tien breaks the rules of fin amor in order to teach the readers about true love by adding the component of psychology to his characters. ChrГ©tien immediately breaks the rule of fin amor early in the story by allowing Erec and Enideto get married. ChrГ©tien uses psychology to portray what fin amor should be by showing the emotions behind a character who is both a lover and a partner in marriage. • 9. The Negative Aspects Of Social Media A picture is worth their pride. A picture is worth their self esteem. A picture is worth their dignity. Social media networking has become a large part of today s society. Media applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat are rising in popularity, not only amongst teens, but adults as well. According to Pew Research Center, in 2015, 65% of American adults now use social networking sites up from 7% back in 2005 (Perrin). Bringing people from all over the world together, social media sites have made it easier for people to communicate and interact on all different levels. Controversy still arises among the negative aspects of social media apps and how its usage affects people, particularly young adolescents. Sociological and psychological literature on the phenomenon of media effects has shown that exposure to media depictions of the thin ideal can have damaging effects for women (Groesz, et al 1 16). The ease of access to thousands of pictures that have been photoshopped, edited and altered, tweets and Facebook posts makes it hard for young adolescents to distinguish reality from fiction. They seek validation and want to be liked, so they don t have to go further than the tip of their fingers to get this as they scroll the pages of Instagram and Facebook. Weber, she stated, Girls turn to these sites to figure out who they are, what they should look like, who they should try to be and how they can make themselves ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Poverty In Poverty And Poverty As a main theme in Hunger and Shame, child malnutrition is a serious problem that has affected many different societies. Child malnutrition is a complicated concept that often has many causes; each society is different and must be studied closely to fully understand the reason for such a horrific epidemic. Focusing on the Chagga population, many factors catalyzed the epidemic including environmental, cultural, and global. Coffee is a major cash crop of Chagga farmers (p. xi) and a large portion of the economic profit, but what happens when drought and coffee berry disease hit the Chagga society. Environmental problems such as these became a large problem facing many people of the Chagga. Much of the rich farm land on Mt. Kilimanjaro inhabited coffee trees and therefore leaving less space for individual gardens. When coffee berry disease and drought affected the production of Tanzanias major export, people such as the Chagga were left with a food shortage, therefore introducing another environmental problem: famine. Although families could maintain home gardens with the small amount of land available, it rarely was enough to satisfy the whole family. Yet Chagga farmers were not permitted to convert coffee farming land into land for personal farming. Another large cause of sickness came from the bacteria ridden water. Women did not boil the water upon giving it to their young. A lot of people have heard don t drink the water in Mexico . Well this was a similar situation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. 1930-1940 Essay 1930 1940 The 1930s brought a very turbulent time to the United States. As a result of the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the nation was experiencing a severe depression. There were hard class divisions dividing the nation. People were either extremely rich or extremely poor. The middle class simply did not exist (Bondi 97). On March 4, 1933 Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office with the promise of hope and relief for struggling Americans. Roosevelt followed up his promise for help with the New Deal, his plan to combat the depression. The New Deal involved the three R s: relief, recovery and reform. It included measures concerning banking, securities, industry, and agriculture (Bondi 97). Roosevelt won reelection in 1936 and the economy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The explosion was a great blow to the prestige of the Nazi regime (Kirshon 676). In the 1930s, Surrealism developed in art with an emphasis on content and free form (Brittanica). As a part of the surrealist movement, Salvador Dali painted Persistence of Memory. However, Dali was expelled from Europe s Surrealists for his support of Franco in the Spanish civil war (Burne 996). In the United States, art was depicting regions. Regionalism was an artistic or literary style that was tied to American landscape. Painters such as Grant Wood and John Stuart Curry painted the landscape while writers such as Steinbeck and Farrell wrote about specific regions in their works (Bondi 44). Depression Modernism also developed in the United States. This movement brought gleaming black glass, black Vitrolite, chrome, Micarta, and peach tinted mirrors (Grief 1). According to the author, Streamlining became the vogue in furniture and clothing, clocks, and typewriters, toasters, and vacuum cleaners, but especially in houses, public buildings, airplanes, railway trains, and automobiles (Greif 193). • 17. Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Lightships Lightships are manned seamarks anchored at a specific point of a river, generally a shallow one. Fixed into place by a mushroom shaped anchor, these small ships (rarely above 50 tons) would initially use large lanterns affixed atop the main mast. Their main advantage is that they could be placed in areas where it was impossible for lighthouses to act as efficient seamarks. Their main disadvantage, especially the early ones, is that turbulent waters could slightly shift the anchor and thus the ship s positioning (Talbot 1913, pp. 241 42). In the worst case scenario, the chains could snap, leaving the ship in a dire position. However, introduced in the early 19th century were numerous lighting inventions (Clarke 2016, pp. 14, 42) as well as mooring technologies using iron, which could anchor a vessel 12 to 14 times the tonnage of the largest lightship (Clarke 2016, pp. 50 56), made them increasingly reliable over time. Ubiquitous to seafarers, their offshore position meant that lightships were out of eyesight of the majority of the population, which explains why they went largely unnoticed, even by most economists and historians including Coase, who studied lighting services. Yet, lightships featured prominently in the frequently cited 1834 Report from the Select Committee on Lighthouses. In fact, of the 55 lights in England, 13 were provided by floating lights (House of Commons 1834, p. VI). As such, lightships were an important contributor to lighting services. What ... John Locke s Theory Of Personal Identity And Diversity Edin Hodzic Philosophy Final Paper 12/1/15 Homicidal Somnambulism Imagine that one night you end up sleepwalking and end up killing someone. Sounds crazy doesn t it? Things like this have actually happened. There are now 68 known cases of homicidal somnambulism. (BBC) . Homicidal somnambulism is the act of murdering someone while in the state of sleepwalking. The legal argument for this has been that the defendant was not in their normal state of mind while this has happened and therefore cannot be blamed for such a crime. Locke is known to believe in his theory of personal identity and diversity. Locke s theory talks about consciousness and how our consciousness makes our identity through our experiences. Locke states that we are only considered guilty of committing a crime if we were aware of it and remember doing it. Although I agree with Locke in some terms regarding our identity having something to do with our consciousness, I do not fully agree. One of the problems that comes to mind with this to me is how could we prove that someone was actually sleepwalking and that they are unaware of their actions. Can we trust them and take their word for it or is there a scientific way in which we can prove it. Locke distinguishes between man and person. The goal of a leader should be to set an example, and standard for others. The well known, Machiavelli, Plato, and Marcus Aurelius have varying opinions of what a leader should be. Only one view of a leader that I can agree with correlates with the voice of Aurelius most. Despite this, I must admit that Machiavelli s and Plato s writings of the Prince and Republic offers a few point that can be validated. The writings of Plato s Republic, Machiavelli s Prince, and Aurelius s Meditationsall contain a visions of a leader, but the descriptions of Aurelius are more closely related to what a leader is. There are three impactful minds that affect how people perceive the essence of a leader, and they are Machiavelli, Plato and Marcus Aurelius. In Plato s Republic, Plato describes what he believes a leader to possess. He describes a leader to be the person who understands the forms, and seeks the truth. He calls that person a philosopher king, or a joyful shepherd of sheep. This man/woman is able to determine what is real and what is not. With this ability they are able to lead people with a selflessness that cannot be matched by the other two figures. Moving on to Marcus Aurelius s outlook, the differences show through plainly. It can be inferred from the development of the plot that Adora s strange mental case of Munchausen by Proxy(MBP), in which she harms her own children to gain sympathetic attention, can be correlated entirely to the reason Camille has been self harming herself by cutting words onto her body since she was a teenager. The fact that every time people said [Camille] was pretty, [she] thought of everything ugly swarming beneath [her] clothes (Flynn 150) emphasizes the severity of Camille s psychological issues; she refuses to see herself as beautiful after everything that has been done to harm her. I can see why it a solid option for people to think because, it can seem like a more logical approach on life and is a belief that requires little faith. It is more of a way of thinking than a way of living life, but also I can see a few cracks in their system. This may sound a little absurd, but it seems like a cover of up somebody s interest in God that is not fully ready for the commitment of living by faith. It could also be somebody scared to change their life or be viewed differently because of the belief they have chosen. Probably Euclid first proved no results in The Elements but the organization of the material and its exposition are certainly due to him. In fact there is ample evidence that Euclid is using earlier textbooks as he writes the Elements since he introduces quite a number of definitions, which are never used such as that of an oblong, a rhombus, and a rhomboid. • 29. Theme Of Self Image In 12 Angry Men Self image is a largely talked about issue. From negative to positive outlooks, it can be seen in most magazines, heard on most talk shows, and is mentioned in almost every article on the internet. The 1957 MGM film Twelve Angry Men compels the characters in the film and the audiences to view their own self image when making a decision on the guilt of an eighteen year old boy who is accused of killing his father. By using logic, reflection, and attitude, the movie shows each of the characters to review their views and beliefs and how they see themselves and others. During the film, logic was required on everyone s part. They were deciding on an eighteen year old kid s life! It was not a decision to be made quickly. Mr. Davis realizes this and is the only one to vote not guilty when taking the first vote (Lumet). Logic came into play because Mr. Davis thought logically about all of the evidence presented and because of this he felt that there was a reasonable doubt and could therefore, not sentence the young man. Throughout the rest of the film, we see more of the men thinking logically, for example, when Juror Nine realizes that the woman who claims she witnessed the murder, wore glasses and would not have been able to clearly see the boy if she claimed to be laying in bed trying to fall asleep. Another example is when juror number five, who grew up in the same area of town that the defense did, shows the proper way of using a switchbladeknife, making a logical ... • 33. Two Contrasting Places In A Tale Of Two Cities The inclusion of two contrasting places is an effective way for an author to represent motifs. For example in F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby, West Egg and East Egg are utilized to represent old and new money and the beliefs and values that the people from these places posses. Through thorough a comparison and contrast of these places much can be learned that may have been missed without considering what each place represents which allows for enhancement of the novel as a whole. Specifically, in A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, the setting takes place in both London and Paris. In Paris turmoil is present as the average citizens plan to overthrow the French government for their harsh rule, and in London peace and a sense of normalness... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through this comparison it can be inferred that although there are differences between the cities, there is homogeneity between them as well. There were a king with a large jaw, and a queen with a plain face, on the throne of England; there were a king with a large jaw, and a queen with a fair face, on the throne of France (Dickens 13). The idiom used to describe the two kings exemplifies the similarities between England and France; both countries were ruled by harsh authoritative rule. Dickens later illustrates this by satirizing the judicial systems in the two countries. Dickens describes Darnay s trial in London in a way that gives the impression that the only reason Darnay is guilty is because the jury is loyal to the attorney general and the attorney general finds Darnay guilty. The jury, being a loyal jury ( as he knew they were), and being a responsible jury (as they knew they were), must positively find the prisoner guilty, and make and end of him, whether they liked it or not (Dickens 74). This underscores the discredibility of the judicial system by entailing that the jury and people in the court to see someone get killed. Nevertheless, the judicial system in Paris compared to London was unquestionably exceedingly atrocious. Once convicted of a crime it was ascertained that that person would be beheaded. There was a higher chance of pigs flying than being proven innocent. Through the quotation, There were twenty three names, but only twenty were responded to; for one of the prisoners so summoned had died in gaol and been forgotten, and two had already been guillotined and forgotten (Dickens 278), Dickens is able to personify the inhumanity in Paris. Essentially, there were so many people that were being killed that often times it would go unrecognized if someone on the list was already killed. By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dances with Wolves is a motion picture that deals with and touches on all sides of personal stereotypes we as American and American Indianshave about each other. John Dunbar takes us through and allows us to see how it is to come into a situation he was not familiar with and then eventually the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also came across intimidated by John because of his courage through this miserable time. He saw Dunbar as someone he could never be and he didn t see his life worth living anymore. Going into the movie we did not really get a strong sense of how Dunbar thought of the Indians. While he was journeying out to the frontier Dunbar asked Timmons, a man that was taking him there, what he thought about Indians. With no hesitation at all Timmons stated that they were all thieves, murderers, and savages. Dunbar didn t ever state what he thought of the Indians. I got the impression that he really did not have an opinion about them because he has never dealt with them. He seemed like the type of guy that would not assume something without experiencing it for himself. Everyone he talked to about Indians probably said the same things Timmons did, but for some reason Dunbar was different from the rest. He seemed to be better than that. The Indians are finally presented in the movie by the screen scanning across a wide open desert very peaceful and deserted. In the middle of all this silence the camera fell upon a skeleton of a human that we assume the Indians killed. This is how the movie sets the tone for how we are going to think about the Indians. • 44. Essay on Rent Control There is a reason for everything, and if there is no reason to do something, most people will not do it. For example, if there is no incentive to motivate landlords to upkeep their property and make it the best it can be, they will left their properties at the lowest manageable state they can get away. Rent ceiling laws are an example of how lack of motivation and incentives can discourage people from making sure their best work and resources go into their product or whatever they are doing. These laws impose limitations on the amount landlords can charge their tenants for staying in their properties. This causes the landlords to lose the amount of money they should have made on their property, and the landlords will not be motivated to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The obstacles landlords have to overcome causes them to lose their motivation to invest in rental properties and they instead flock towards other housing options to include condominiums, office towers, and hotels. In short, lack of motivation in exchange for more red tape causes investors and landlords to move towards more profitable options. This movement of money and resources tends to negatively impact people trying to find a place to live, most notably the poor. The National Multi Housing Council (NMHC) states that prospective customers must pay finder fees to find a rental property due to a presumably growing scarcity of available housing. As if this were not bad enough, in some communities rental properties are handed down to friends and family, so they never quite leave the market. In order to obtain housing, new consumers are forced to pay key money and other fees. These costs tend to impact young, single, and poor families the most. As if all of the more or less hidden fees were not bad enough, young, single, and poor families able to find a rental property are often discriminated against. Landlords tend to use factors such as income and credit history in determining who gets their rental property Richer families end up doing better with rent control laws because of this. Poorer people who make up a larger part of the population end up out of a house to live in. Some economists would argue the above mentioned examples of why rent control is harmful to ... • 45. Snowball Fight Essay POW! At what seems like 100 miles per hour it hits you! The cold snow running down your back, chills form on your arm. Then, another one! Quickly you dodge it, then grab your own and send it flying back. Wow, you think, snowball fights are extreme. This snowball fight was the best I ever had. We were throwing snowballs across the street, hitting houses and laughing as we do so. Running in the snow we began the fight! Each team building a snow fort bigger and better than the other teams. Unfortunately in all of that chaos my team accidentally built our fort in the neighbor s yard! Luckily, we fixed their yard up before they got home. Before we knew it the fight began, and I was the first to get hit. The icy snow hit me right in the face ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
