A Rose For Emily Literary Analysis
Edgar Allan Poe A Rose for Emily In Edgar Allan Poe s A Rose for Emily, the
townspeople visit Emily Grierson s house because it smells bad. Thirty years
before this, her father has died and she states he is not dead. The town is calling
the law to make her give up the body. She keeps the body in her house for three
days then gives it up. She is evading paying taxes and the town wants her to pay
them. The special meeting, they are holding is about sending tax notices and getting
no reply from Emily. City authorities are paying a visit to her house finding a Negro
servant answering the door. They are invited in smelling dust and disuse a close, dank
smell (Faulkner 31). The neighbors are complaining to the townspeople about the
smell coming from the house. Four men are planning to sprinkle lime around the
house after midnight. They are talking about her... Show more content on

The Impact Of War As Portrayed In Ceremony By Leslie Marmon Silko
Introduction Leslie Marmon Silko s Ceremony, the most important novel of the
Native American Renaissance, is among the most widely taught and studied novels
in higher education today. In it, Silko recounts a young man s search for
consolation in his tribe s history and traditions, and his resulting voyage of self
discovery and discovery of the world. The main character Tayo must come to terms
with himself and his surrounding environment upon his return from World War II.
He is suffering from a sort of posttraumatic stress disorder which has affected him
physically as well as emotionally due to the fact that he has survived as a prisoner of
war in Japan. Consequently he must deal with all of the horrific memories when he
returns to live with his family on the Laguna Puebloreservation in New Mexico. To
compound his problems, Tayo is half Caucasian and half Native American, so he
must also deal with the added pressures of bi culturalism. He is torn between the
Native American world and the white world, and is unable to feel a secure security
or belonging. Tayo s friends and family believe that they know the nature of and
antidote for Tayo s illness and depression, however it is only the Native American
ceremonies, which will truly help him. He needs to witness the convergence of life
and truly understand the cyclical nature of his emotions and events that he has
experienced. With the help and wisdom of Old
California s Right to Know Act
California Right to Know Act: Time Newspaper has learnt that it s not surprising that
Internet companies have electronic dossiers that contain personal information for
individuals who subscribe to the websites. Generally, these companies have obtained
the information from people based on individual s visit to the website, sent and
received emails, tagged photos, and searches people carry out. However, the extent of
personal information known by these Internet companies has remained largely
unknown as well who they provide and/or sell this information to. However, Internet
companies continue to gather lots of personal information from different people who
focus on carrying out online activities on a daily basis. Currently, it s estimated that
these firms gather personal information from nearly 500 million users but are hesitant
to provide this information to the other firms or individuals. As their unwillingness to
share has attracted significant congressional inquiry, things could finally change in
California following the introduction of a bill that may force companies to disclose
the kind of personal information they have gathered and how this information is
being used. Summary of California s Right to Know Act: California s Right to Know
Act has been a long overdue bill in the State s legislature that seeks to force Internet
companies like Facebook and Google to disclose the collected personal information
and the use of that information (Cohen, 2013). The introduction
Analyzing Satire and Parody in Blazing Saddles Essay
Analyzing Satire and Parody in Blazing Saddles
No one is born a racist bigot. In other words, racial bigotry or racial prejudice is not
genetically or biologically determined... Therefore, if most people spoke out about
racism, it would be the first step towards a revolutionary change. Dr. Charles Quist
Adade Mel Brooks Blazing Saddles, sheds light to the cultural problems of the
Western era through satire with elements of parody within. John Vogel describes
Blazing Saddles as The Ultimate Western Spoof. The problem of racism is the
main focus of this film. If one takes a closer look at the work of Mel Brooks, there
is a noticeable trend of his films pointing fingers at racists. In order to better

Some of the features that are to become key elements of the genre are to be found in
early silent Westerns from the late 1890s and early 1900s (Westerns). Since this time,
many of the famous films have become household names. For some people, the
reason they have been introduced to this film genre is because of their grandparents
or parents. For others, they may have a genuine interest to understand this culture that
has transformed itself to fit with a new era of time. Although these films have been
able to generate great amounts of revenue, they are full of underlying elements that
show the cultural issues of that time period. Moreover, some of these elements may
not be noticeable to everyone at first, but that is where the satire and parody come
into play.
Satire is a technique employed by writers to expose and criticize foolishness and
corruption of an individual or a society by using humor, irony, exaggeration or
ridicule. It intends to improve humanity by criticizing its follies1 and foibles2. A
writer may point satire

Machiavelli s The Prince
Niccolo Machiavelli s advice towards leaders in his book The Prince is both
relevant and not relevant today in many ways. The European leader that I have
chosen to prove what advice Machiavelli gave in The Prince is relevant and what is
not, is Edward Heath. Some of Edwards work relates to the advice given by
Machiavelli while many of it is the pure opposite of Machiavelli s advice. Edward
Heath was prime Minister for the Conservative Party from June 1970 through
March 1975. While he was in ruling, in 1972 unemployment began to rise
considerably in Europe. In order to to help this crisis and reduce the amount of
unemployment Heath inflated the economy which eventually made everything
worse. Machiavelli said, He who successfully adapts his actions according to the
nature of the times will be successful, while he whose actions clash with the times
will not be successful. Machiavelli is trying to say that when a problem arises you

Many years later people figured out that it is to be untrue. What Edward did, has
caused a great deal of damage to the country. Edward was dishonest. Machiavelli talks
about being dishonest many times in his book, The Prince. Machiavelli quotes in his
book, A wise lord cannot, nor ought he to, keep his promises when such observance
would place him at a disadvantage, and when the reasons for which he gave his
word no longer exist. Machiavelli is basically saying it s ok to be dishonest and
not keep your promise in order to be a great leader. This is not true because Edward
lied and that did not make him a powerful or a better leader, it just made him the
very opposite. Being dishonest is one thing that is not true or relevant to being a
successful leader which is one reason why Machiavelli s advice in The Prince is not
Analysis Of The Magician s Nephew, By C. S. Lewis
Living and growing up in London during the twentieth century was a time full of
hardships and sacrifices. Likewise, it was also an era of religious persecution
towards various religious groups (Schoenl 245). After World War II, Christianity
flourished and was an influence on millions of people and writers, like Clive
Staples Lewis. C.S. Lewis was an Irish writer born in 1898, a time when Europe
was the epicenter of the world. Although having spent most of his life in England,
his Irish roots can be seen and felt in all his novels. His marvelous readings may
seem like adventurous, mythical works, but they hold a deeper message of morality
and religionthat intrigue the reader into desiring more. C.S. Lewis has a magnificent
way of connecting his novels to cultural events and myths. The first novel in the
series, The Magician s Nephew, tells the classical story of the biblical book of
Genesis in a form that young elementary readers understand how Godeffortlessly
creates the earth and how the fictional world of Narnia came into being. Lewis
utilizes a third person omniscient perspective, realism, and imagery with a twist of
the cultural aspects of twentieth century Europe in order to truly... Show more content

Likewise, Gale states in his article of animal experimentation after World War II, The
number of animals used in experiments increased dramatically after World War II,
especially in the studies of disease and treatments for disease. Animal experiments
were instrumental in the development of open heart surgery, organ transplant,
treating diabetes with insulin, and other medical advances. The reflection of this
cultural act can be seen in the experiments Uncle Andrew conducts on his Guiney
pigs. He sends them off into other worlds, watches others explode as his
experiments fail, and simply does not care for any animal rights just as many
Europeans did not care either (Lewis Ch.
Adderall Research Paper
Adderall is prescription drug that is a derivative of two forms of Amphetamine: l
amphetamines and d amphetamines, the latter being the larger portion (makes up
75%) as well as the more potent of the two [6]. Amphetamine (then called Benzedrine
) was first synthesized in the early 1900 s through a serendipitous discovery while
searching for a cheaper substitute of another drug called ephedrine. The chemist who
discovered this new drug, G.A Alles, then conducted experiments and found that this
new drug was powerful stimulant. As a result, it was introduced to the public in
1935. It was advertised as a treatment for narcolepsy, mild depression, post
encephalitic Parkinson and later as an appetite suppressant. Reports of improvement

ADHD is linked to a dysregulation in the catecholaminergic systems (dopamine,
norepinephrine) in the prefrontal cortex and subcortical regions, both of which are
implicated in many cognitive functions such as prioritizing stimuli, impulsivity and
attention [3]. Seeing as amphetamines are involved in these same systems, one can
see why they can be used to treat problems involving those regions. Amphetamines
have a high affinity for catecholamine transporters, especially VMAT2, which a
vesicular monoamine transporter that carries newly synthesized monoamines in the
cytosol into vesicles at the nerve terminal for storage until they are to be released
following an action potential. It competes with endogenous monoamines for
transport, and as a result, the cytosol remains full of monoamines because their
translocation into vesicles is inhibited. In addition, amphetamines also inhibit
monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that metabolizes intracellular monoamines, further
increasing the level of free monoamines which spurs the VMAT2 to mobilize the
monoamines from the cytosol and release them into the synapse, a process called
reverse transport [1]. As a result, people with ADHD can function without their usual
cognitive impairments. New studies have recently shown that
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein And The Bride Of

It is amazing how words on a page take a life of their own once they are written. An
author s story can take readers away on a magic carpet ride, to a magical castle that
anything can happen in Britain, even through a wardrobe to a land far away and
draft them in the battle of a lifetime. But what is even more fascinating is that unlike
humans, the words on the page never changes. From this moment to 200 years from
now, the words on this page will always be the same, it is only the reader and the
world around them that changes. Take for example Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. In
1818, Shelley had a nightmare that lead her to write her novel as a personification of
the Victorian Culture s fascination of science and death. In 1934, director James
Whaleadapted the material into The Bride of Frankensteinfilm, and was an allegory
for pre WWII unity, then in 1997, someone interpreted the film as a homosexual
allegory for the 1990 s. This paper will examine how Mary Shelley adapted her
nightmare into an allegory for her Victorian era audience, how James Whale used
her original text to turn The Bride of Frankenstein into a message of unity for a pre
WWII audience, as well as how Garry Morris uses Whale s film to create a pro same

Mary Shelley adapted her nightmare of a mad scientist bringing a dead body back to
life, into a text that reflects Victorian Customs is by featuring the importance of

worshipping ways. Psalmscontinues in a happy uplifting tone, where the people

God is good but he also has complete control over everything. The Song of Songs,

They ask many questions and expect many answers from the king. They have

they continue to speak with each other on where their heart sets. The women begin

The woman is very interested in what Solomon has to offer. I m quite confused, I

Question 2 In The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, which social groups
are marginalized, excluded, or silenced within the text?
____________________________________________________________________________
The topic of racism and exclusion is shown in the real world and has been shown in
America since the very beginning. Ever since 1492, when Columbus discovered the
Americas, there was an instant leverage in terms of power over minorities. Over time,
whites and other minorities have had a conflicting relationship in society. In the
book, The Lone Ranger and TontoFistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie the natives
living on reservations are excluded and mistreated in society. There are examples
throughout the book where the natives living on the reservation are marginalized,
excluded and silenced within the text displaying the topic of racism.
The topic of racism is big in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. The
reservation is an example of racism, straight off the beginning of the book it is
clear poverty is a big problem in these reservations. The quote on page 3 state s,

Marriott Corporation: The Cost of Capital
Introduction
Dan Cohrs of Marriott Corporation has the important task of determining correct
hurdle rates for the entire corporation as well as each individual business segment.
These rates are instrumental in determining which future projects to pursue and thus
fundamentally important for Marriott s growth trajectory. This case analysis seeks
to examine Marriott s financial strategy in comparison with its growth goals as well
as evaluate a detailed breakdown of Marriott s cost of capital both divisionally and as

Assuming that Marriott s unlevered beta can be calculated as a weighted average of
its divisions betas based on identifiable assets, we can find Contract Services
unlevered beta by solving:
Using some algebra, this yields an unlevered beta of 1.55 for Contract Services.
Relevering with the

Cost of Capital Marriott as a Whole
There are several ways to approach Marriott s cost of capital as an entire firm. One
way is to use
CAPM to find its cost of equity, long term interest rates for the cost of debt, and
weigh according to its capital structure to find WACC. Under this method, we lever
the previously found firm wide ОІU of .79 to the desired 3/2 debt to equity ratio to
find a cost of equity of 17.12%. Next, we apply the CAPM using the 10 year

personalities are a world apart. Dee is outgoing, spunky, and not afraid to say what

All though the sisters are different, their insecurities link them together in a unique
way. In conclusion I can say in Alice Walker s story Everyday Uses, the two sisters

Biodiversity, Or Biological Diversity
Biodiversity, or biological diversity, is a technical term that captures diversity of the
whole living world, from genes to individual species, through plant and animal
communities and entire biomes (Defra, 2010). In other words, biodiversity represents
genes, species, and ecosystems, which are the structural elements that are nestled
within each other, and their ecological functions, in an area (Cepel, 1997; Ozcelik,
2006).
Biodiversity provides the building blocks for our ecosystems to function, which
provide us with a wide range of goods and services that support our economic and
social wellbeing (Defra, 2011). For example, these include food, fresh water and
clean air, along with protection from natural disasters, regulation of ... Show more

Today, the effects of the changes caused by men can be felt by nearly 17,000
species of plants and animals that are face to face with extinction (Kucuk and
Erturk, 2013). This threat of the mass extinction of the species was recognised
several decades ago; however, since then, the best efforts have hardly done more
than slow the pace of the accelerating damage (Myers, 2003). More than a decade
after Myers (2003) made this point, Professor Sir John Lawton (2015) explains that
biodiversity loss is still getting worse, not better; pollution in the oceans is rising; the
planet seems to be running out of fresh water and its soils are degrading at an
alarming rate.
Essentially, the effects and total resource needs of human society were extremely
small for most of human history. Nevertheless, since the beginning of the Industrial
Revolution, society has been growing in size and technological power, causing an
ever growing impact on the biosphere, to the point that the ecosystems services that
society depends on are being degraded in ways that cannot be sustained (Robert et al.,
2012). This study demonstrates this sustainability challenge with a funnel metaphor
(Figure 1.1).

The Impact Of International Corporations On A Nation s...
Tell me, is there some society that doesn t run on greed? What is greed? Of course,
none of us are greedy, it is only the other fellow that s greedy. The world runs on
individuals pursuing their separate interests. Milton Friedman (2002)
A common trend within developed and developing countries is foreign direct
investment (FDI) as a major source of capital. What differs is the effect it has for the
nation s people. The current economic and technological development, its government
policy and a nation s labour force all alter the potential outcomes for a nation. This
report will examine the effects of international corporations becoming involved in the
discovery and extraction of oil reservoirs in Nigeria and compare it to the results in
Norway. It will explain how the stability of the governments affect the long term
outcomes. Norway is a prospering country, its people are ranked as the second
happiest in the world, and its government is seen as trustworthy and influent.
Nigeria has a turbulent past which the discovery of oil has exasperated. These
issues are recognised by the World Bank who have responded by labelling Nigeria
as a fragile state due to its risk of armed conflict, epidemic diseases and failed
governance. (World Bank, 2014) It appears that when a country is faced with the
influx of foreign investors, it is the strength of the government that will determine
who controls the power.

Joy Luck Club, And Waverly Tan s Joy Luck Club
Waverly Jong is very different from her mother, Lindo, but Waverly shares some
similarities with her mother. Both women know how to be tricky towards their
situations. When married to Tyan yu in China, Lindo devised a plan to exit the
marriage without dishonoring her family. Lindo said, It was really quite simple. I
made the Huangs think it was their idea to get rid of me, that they would be the
ones to say the contract was valid. (Tan, Joy Luck Club 63). Lindo later stated,
They didn t blame me so much. Huang Taitai got her grandson. I got my clothes, a
rail ticket to Peking, and enough money to go to America. (Tan, Joy Luck Club

Waverly Jong uses her deceitfulness to trick her opponents in chess. When going

color ran out of the room, and I saw only my white pieces and his black ones

secrets only I could hear.... Check, I said, as the wind roared with laughter. (Tan, Joy
Luck Club, 96 and 97). When reading these examples, both mother and daughter
show a correlation with this craftiness in certain situations. Although, Lindo and
Waverly have their differences. Lindo Jong has a very strong sense of self during
situations. Before Lindo s marriage, she was questioning who she was. She then

The Ethics And Values Of A Perfect Society
A realistic perfect society
A realistic and ideal society would have three kinds of values. First selfish values,
values that favor the individual. The other two are values that have the intention to
better society but in different, opposing ways. The two things this society would be
vulnerable to are time and perfection because no society can stay in peace and be
perfect for a long time. What are the ethics and values that make a society perfect?
There are thousands of them and consequently cannot all be listed. I will talk about
some of them that are important and crucial to a perfect society.
You might be confused as to why would a society need selfish ethics and values?
Why would it need people who care about themselves more than others? That is
where self respect becomes a factor because to have self respect you need to be a bit
selfish. As Joan Didion claims To have that sense of one s intrinsic worth which,...

But as Johnson claims Friendship is often destroyed by opposition of interest, not
only by the ponderous and visible interest which the desire of wealth and greatness

values though is that even if they are not opposing values about national debates or
world affair, and are minor day to day peeves they eventually lead to conflict. That
conflict dissolves the friendship bonding the society together and without a glue to
keep it together, the society will break apart. The only way in a society with clashing
ethics and values to get a result other than conflict is a perfect democracy. Democracy

The Cuban Population And Population Growth And The
Rate Of...
Cuba is currently described as a developing country and when exploring this
countries history it became clear why they are considered so. At the moment, the
population is decreasing at a rate of 3% according to cia.gov. According to prb.org,
the birth rate per thousand is eleven and death rate per thousand is nine which can
lead one to infer that the rate of natural increase, is 2 per 1000(or .2%). Something
that can be taken away from these stats is that the rate of natural increase is positive
while the rate of populationgrowth is negative. The reason for this is an irrational
number of young people who leave this country.According prb.org, the net
migration rate is 5. This means that for every 1000 people in the country, five
people leave. This number is not supposed to be negative; however, it is because of
how many people leave this country. Most of the people leaving are the young
people who will end up having children. This becomes a problem because if all of
the people who are of childbearing age leave and have children elsewhere, there are
no young people to help offset the old population. According to the site
havannatimes.org, The combination of young people leaving the country and low
birth rates makes Cuban society endure a population aging process. The percentage
of people under 60 has been growing linearly for decades, as the percentage of
people under 20 decreases proportionately. Cuba is currently in stage 4 of the DTM
model. . The country

thoughts and relationships of the novel s main character, Jake Donaghue. A recurring
theme in the novel is the idea of reflection, in both senses of the word: Jake is
continually thinking about ideas, and he is also forever trying to see himself as he
really is. Many of the instances of reflection in the novel occur near rivers or are
connected in some way to currents. As we shall see, Iris Murdoch uses reflections in
Under the Net to represent the mirror opposites of reality and appearance. The Novel

We should note that it is her reflection and not Sadie that Jake sees: [T]he curious
fantasy came to me that if I were to look under the drier at the real face and not at
the reflection I should see there some terrible old witch (p53). The relationship
between appearance and reality is a central theme in the novel, and Jake s search
for the truth includes the desire to learn if one can ever truly know another person.
Jake s fear of intimacy is due in part to his concern for the truth; he states that
although he once briefly thought of marrying Anna, he has never wanted a
communion of the souls because it is already hard enough to tell the truth to oneself
(p31). Jake nevertheless again comes to care deeply for Anna, and in a frantic search
of Paris, he finally finds her at the city s fireworks celebration:
The river was black now under the night sky and glassy, a black mirror in which
every lamp raised a pole of light and the conflagration in the sky above dropped an
occasional piece of gold. The line of people on the other bank was clearly reflected
in it. Anna s image was quite still beneath her. I wondered if in the river...my own
reflection was as vividly shown. (191)
Anna does not see Jake s reflection, however, and he leaves Paris without having
talked to her. In a comic distortion of reality, Jake believes that Hugo loves Anna,
while in fact Hugo loves Sadie, Anna loves Hugo, and Sadie loves Jake; their

Allegory In John Steinbeck s The Grapes Of Wrath
During the 1930 s numerous families were left home and landless due to the
depression and the dust bowl which resulted in a lack of crops produced. These
families ventured west to embark on a new life. In the book The Grapes of wrath
by John Steinbeck, allegory is present in the form of symbolism. Symbolism is
shown in the form of a grasshopper, a turtle and a baby. The grasshopper is a symbol
in The Grapes of Wrathbeing it represents how the migrants were treated when they
moved West. In the beginning of the book, while Tom was hitching a ride from the
man in the red truck, a grasshopper flipped through the window and lighted on top
of the instrument panel... Joad reached forward and crushed it s hard skull like
head with his fingers (12). Instead of just pushing the grasshopper out of the
window, Tom killed it due to the hatred he developed in 1931, as grasshoppers
swarmed onto the farm and ate all of the crops, ruining that year s harvest. During
the book, the treatment of migrants resembles that of the grasshopper from the land
owners. The landowners develop a hatred for the migrants for the sake of their belief
that the migrants are trying to take over their land; just as the grasshoppers had done
to the farmers in the Midwest region of the United States.... Show more content on

While the turtle was on its journey venturing Southwest, a light colored truck
approached, and as it came near, the driver saw the turtle and swerved to hit it (15).
After the turtle landed back on its feet, it faced another challenge when Joad picked it
up and carried it further from its destination. Alas, after obtaining freedom, it
continued on its journey towards the Southeast. This turtle is a representation of the
migrants for the reason that although they are faced with several challenges while on
the way, they are still determined to reach their

Then I think Chua is inhuman and ill treat. In the story Two kinds the paragraph 8

Tort Reform And Medical Malpractice
Tort reform has intense arguments to both sides and creates a myriad of concerns.
On one side of the tort reform movement, defendants such as corporations and
medical professionals want limits on the damages awarded to the plaintiff. The
benefit of tort reform for defendant is the financial savings. However, a cap placed
on medical malpractice cases and other cases that are of negligence would
standardize the monetary compensation regardless of the damage. In my opinion,
Medical malpractice tort reform is a gray area, for each breach of the standard of
care involves a different story and person, therefore the damages vary and should
be evaluated fairly. In this essay, both sides of the argument are discussed, with a
focus on medical malpractice tort reform. Proof of Malpractice For a plaintiff to
triumph a claim of medical malpractice for negligence, four elements must be
established. The first element is proving the defendant owed a duty of care to the
plaintiff. The second is to show that the defendant breached the duty to the plaintiff.
The third is to show that the plaintiff was harmed and experienced damages. Finally,
the fourth is to show that the plaintiff was harmed by the actions of the defendant
(Greenberg, 2009). How does medical malpractice differ from a standard negligence
claim? Medical malpractice differs from a standards negligence claim and some
states have different definitions. There are two primary formulations for the legal
standard of

The Bill Of Rights By James Madison And Influenced By...
The setting in which the bill of rights was written by James Madison and influenced
by George Mason was the United State of America in the late seventeen hundreds.
The bill of rights has many differences from an amendment. The constitution is the
bases of the bill of rights. The federalist and the anti federalist had different views in
which the bill of rights came into play. Many people in the United States did not want
a government that reflected the England government. One will look at what is the bill
of rights, what is an amendment, and how the two differ.

A quote from Thomas Jefferson said that a bill of rights is what a people are entitled
to against every government on earth, general or particular, and what no just
government should refuse or rest on inference (Schweikart). One would think that
Jefferson was a wise man for saying this. His words were powerful. Many people felt
this way and the American people did not want a corrupt government that was only
for the rich. During the writing of the bill of right there were the Federalist and the
anti federalist the two were in disagreement of whether the ten amendments should be
added. The Federalist felt as if the constitution was already completed and nothing
should be added, although the anti federalist felt that the people s rights should be set
in stone, and some things needed to be added to the constitution to reassure the
people. The anti Federalist wanted to change the wording of the United States
Constitution. The Federalist disagreed and said that no one had the right to change the
United States constitution and that the bills should be reviewed and added on to the
constitution. The House voted to accept the Bill of Rights on September 24, 1789,
with the Senate concurring the following day. (Bingham) The bill of rights was there
to ensure that the people followed the rules and that the government could not invade
their rights. Apparently, the first 10 amendments officially became part of the
Constitution with their ratification by Virginia in late
Jimmy Porter s Role In Look Back In Anger, By John
Osborne
JIMMY S PERSONALITY
The novel Look Back in Anger was written by John Osborne, who was one of the
playwrights in the Angry Young Men movement. John Osborne, born in 1929 in a
middle class family, lived in a place he dubbed a cultural wasteland , had an
execrable relationship with women and was one of those scholarship boys in white
tile universities. The Angry Young Menwas a literary movement of the 1950 s whose
fundamental purpose was to express their emotions mainly anger and protest against
social stratification in a very repressed and conservative Britain. The character of
Jimmy Porter is an excellent example of an Angry Young Man and very similar to the
author.

to have casual acquaintances. Therefore, when people eventually leave (his dad,

on the inherent malevolence of women, who, from his point of view, were the
source of all his misery; although he did love Alison and Hugh Tanner s mother. His
self love was so intense that in every situation, even when it had nothing to do with

sexy adult performer that would sweep millions. Her overexposure and paparazzi
frenzy causes her to go insane because she has no privacy. Additionally, there is
proof that Britney has had many psychotic breakdowns. Maybe the reason for her
actions in the past has to do with the fact her children being taken away from her

Only wearing a bra and a mini skirt, the music industry wanted her to be sexier as

Shortly afterwards, the newlyweds had their own reality show called Britney and

hatred, bigotry, and intolerance that was displayed. The events that unfolded would

was: Where does free speech end and hate speechbegin? In this essay I will lay out
the events of the Charlottesville protest, what caused the situation to get so out of

civil rights and liberties of all involved in protests and counter protests. On August
11th, white supremacist groups held a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia which were
initially intended to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue. That night, around
100 protesters marched through the campus of the University of Virginia. They
wielded tiki torches and shouted racial expressions such as Jews will not replace us
and Blood and Soil . However, the events of that night would ultimately pale in
comparison to the events that occurred the next day at Emancipation park. There,
several hundred protesters and counter protesters clashed for several hours, with
people throwing bricks, using pepper spray, and attacking one another with

The Code Of Ethics And Systematic Ethics
Abstract. The article reviewed was The Impact of Ethical Tools on Aggressiveness in
Financial Reporting. The key of the abstract is to demonstrate the differences in
financial reporting between the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
and U.S. Standards (p.477). More in depth the research focuses on the code of ethics
and moral duties of company top management.
Introduction. The authors study the financial scandals and the recent financial crisis
to demonstrate the gap between market processes and accounting standards. The
IFRS and U.S. GAAP differ in contrary nature of accounting standards. GAAP is
considered as rule based standards, while IFRS viewed as a principle based.
Therefore, the professional judgment on financial improprieties is highly important
(p. 479). The main objective of the research is to specify the impact of ethical setting
on judgment and decisions of accountants. The code of ethics and systematic ethics
trainings can diminish the inconsistencies from accounting policies. The study is
important due its analysis of mechanisms and alternatives of decision making, and the
influence of code of ethics on chief officers strategic choices (pp. 484 485). The
authors focuses on the problem: how accounting standards contribute to the
professional judgment, company financial performance, and earning management.
The authors discuss issues that arise because of the unethical financial reporting.

Media, Violence, And Violence Essay
Violent crime statistics are continually increasing over time, and there are a wide
variety of factors that contribute to this. One influencing factor would be the media.
Media and violence are both very wide and broad concepts that have massive impacts
in our society, and it is important to distinguish their relationship with each other. The
types of media are things such as violent video games, films, newspapers, magazines
and television. One particular type of media that is often very problematized is
violent video games. Different studies have shown convincing and unconvincing
correlational in regards to the media and violence, but to whom do we believe?
The media, especially in today s modern society surrounds us all the time. It affects
our daily lives and has become part of our everyday routines, which is why it has
such a huge impact on us, and violent media is everywhere. It is known that by the
time we get to our eighteenth birthday, we will have seen and witnessed about
200,000 violent acts and about 16,000 murders (Media Education Foundation, 2005).
There have been ongoing controversial debates as to whether violent media exposure
contributes to violent and aggressive behaviours and whether one is caused by the
other. Violence includes, but is not limited to things such as murder, assault,
homicide, shootings, property offence, rape and assault. The mainstream and popular
notion has been that violent video games make people more aggressive and
desensitized to

Mina Loy And Marinetti Essay
Loy and Marinetti are similar in their ability to use language to generate a new
outlook on society that strives to empower their identity, whether that be as women or
men, in society. Mina Loy s Feminist Manifesto is visually similar to Marinetti s
Destruction of Syntax Untrammeled Imagination Words in Freedom. That is not
surprising, since the works of Loy and Marinetti both represent the Futurist party and
the principles that go along with Futurism. Inspired by Marinetti s enthusiastic tone,
Loy attempts to mirror his prose in Feminist Manifesto by adding capital letters,
different font sizes and underlining words to emphasize her tone and standpoint on

Analysis Of The Book Memoirs Of A Geisha
Memoirs of a Geisha is a beautiful work of meta fiction; where the author
implements an autobiographical approach and fabricates a fictional translator who
is supposedly a friend of the protagonist in the book; Nitta Sayuri a geisha or Geiko
of Kyoto, Japan. Here Golden gives an unusual frame to the storytelling through
the voice of the translator Jacob and how Jacob documents Sayuri s oral narration
about the fascinating life she has had as a Kyoto Geisha. This biographical
approach gives the story yet more believable and also can leave the readers
confused between fantasy and reality. The story is set in a period in Japan; which is
almost forgotten today. It s a chronicle about the life of a Geisha; which in Japanese

Beneath the layer of a romantic memoire, this book actually unveils the history of a

carefully wraps the truth about why Mr Tanaka could only choose being Geisha or a

other helper job at his company. Ultimately, a

effects. In Susan Glaspell s Trifles, gender inequality is the main conflict and is made
clear through symbolism and dramatic irony.
Glaspell describes Mrs. Wright as kind of like a bird herself real sweet and pretty,
but kind of timid and fluttery (Glaspell 612). Glaspell uses the bird to symbolize
Minnie Wright s spirit.Mrs. Wright, as stated by Mrs. Hale, would [stand] up there
in the choir and [sing] (Glaspell 610). Then Mrs. Wright had gotten a bird to sing
with and like the bird, was also trapped in a cage. Mr. Wright... Show more content

The title Trifles refers to domestic matters that the men consider insignificant and
irelivant. Even though the men disregard these things, the trifles have a large
impact on life and death in the play. While the men are searching the house, Mrs.
Peters makes a comment about how Mrs. Wright was worried that the jars might be
broken. Then Mr. Peters, the sheriff, makes the condescending statement, Held for
murder and worryin about her preserves (Glaspell 604). Mr. Hale agrees in saying
that Well, women are used to worrying over trifles (Glaspell 604). The men s
mocking attitude toward the woman show that they think men are the only ones
concerned with important things and that women only fret over stupid things that
mean nothing. To the men, the dirty roller trowel and broken jar are an
inconvenience; they immediately conclude that the woman must be at fault in her
housekeeping abilities because they all know John Wright as a good, respectable
man but from the point of view of the women Mrs. Wright is a person who loved to
do her own canning and baking, things her husband would never tolerate. The trifles
are the clues to the murder and why it
Essay On Standing Tall
The book, Standing Tall: The Kevin Everett Story (Published in 2008) written by
Sam Carchidi is about a former NFL player overcoming a seemingly irreversible
injury during his professional career. I selected this book because it reminds me of
the days when I played football in high school and how fortunate I was to be able
to walk away from the sport with no severe injuries. I constantly read about the
freak accidents in football that either left an athlete with a lifelong injury or
sometimes even death. This book stood out to me because it is about a player who
went against the odds and was able to somewhat recover from what seemed like an
injury that would have left him disabled for the rest of his life. The book begins
conversation about how Kevin Everettwas entering his third year as a tight end and
special team s player for the Buffalo Bills organization with a promising future
ahead of him. This was all about to change in the season opening game for Keven
against the Denver Broncos. During the opening game Kevin was making special
teams tackle after a punt to put the Broncos far back into their own territory, but that
tackle was about to change Kevin s life. After taking down the opposing player
Kevin was left in the ground motionless and not responding. Kevin was carted off the
field and taken to one of the nearest hospitals. After... Show more content on

This story gives a good explanation in that freak accidents can happen and you can
either sit back and accept what happened to you, or you can try to fight back and
not be your disability and/or problem. I would recommend this book for anyone that
has a passion for sports or generally likes a good read about someone who defeats
adversity. This book has defiantly impacted me in the aspect that Kevin did something
Tarod Thornhill Shooting In The Monroeville Scandal
On February 7, 2015, there was a shooting in the Monroeville Mall in Monroeville,
Pennsylvania where only three people were taken to the hospital for treatment for
gunshot wounds. Luckily, nobody was pronounced dead, but the two men (one was
the intended target) were in critical condition. The woman who was also shot was
in stable condition. Police officials told the reporters that the shooter, seventeen
year old, Tarod Thornhill had an intended target when he entered the mall
(Associated Press, 2015). Unfortunately, two other bystanders who where near the
scene where also part of his outrage towards this one particular person. Tarod
Thornhill managed to escape after the shooting, but because the mall had
surveillance video, police officials were able to get an image of how he looked.
Since Police Officials now know how he looked they started to run his image
through, and since he was on many of those... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The next day police officials were at his home in Brackenridge, Pennsylvania,
ready to arrest him. After the arrest of Tarod Thornhill, police officials took him to
Allegheny County Jail where he is currently pending arraignment on charges as an
adult of aggravated assault, attempted homicide and recklessly endangering other
people (Associated Press, 2015). In 1990, a new theory was brought to the public s
eye, which is able to explain all types of crime at all times. This new theory was
called the theory of low self control otherwise known as the general theory of crime.
Travis Hirschi and Michael Gottfredson were the two theorists that came together to
the form general theory of crime. The theory recognized that many individuals are
not always born well. These individuals are born predisposed toward selfish, self

Interview With George Phillips, A Professor At The...
I conducted an interview with George Phillips, a sociology professor at the
University of Central Florida. I held the interview on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at
Noon. I chose to interview him because my topic deals with the interactions of
people and studying their social behaviors which is a sociology topic. I emailed
him to ask him for a time to interview and then set up the interview for a time while
I wasn t working and that he said would work for him. I made sure I had permission
to record the interview and then sat down with him to get his responses. I asked 5
questions on his opinions of students social habits in relation to video streaming. We
discussed how he has seen student s social lives change because of the availability of

tool Survey Monkey offers to delete their responses. I had ten questions that I
asked. I asked their age so that I could decide if they were the right demographic for
my study. I asked what video streaming websites they belonged to or used. I also
asked the hours a day they spend on television and the hours they spend with friends,
as well as if they watched television alone or with a friend. I asked if they watched
similar television shows to their friends, as well as if they would prefer to go out
with a friend or to watch Netflix. Finally I asked what device they use to watch
Netflix along with how many episodes in a row they usually watch. I wanted easy
quick questions so that I didn t take up too much of my respondent s time. I
included an Other option because some of the questions I knew could have answers
I was unaware of. The information I gathered in the survey was to see what college
student s television streaming habits were like so that I could analyze them.

The Expansion Of Western European Travelers
The undeniable expansion of Western European travelers came with a toll that has
stamped history books with pages of inhumane and unfathomable treatment of
people. The slave ship saw the demise of many millions of people but for a few, a re
birth. The slave trade itself saw the destruction of not only families but of the
individual human; their mind, body and spirit. The art of destroying the human starts
at the root of which they would be most bound to, this being their family. The slave
shipand its crew perfected the art of the destruction of the kin , also known as ones
familial relations. With the destruction of kinship, a new type of kin was needed,
otherwise the enslaved human would find their life meaningless. This thus sprouting

2017). The use of slave labourers to produce goods such as cotton and tobacco
helped finance the colonial economy and advance the slave trade. This expansion
of the slave trade would not have been so successful if the familial ties between the
slaves was not broken, without this disconnect, the slave trade may not have been
what it was. The beginning of the destruction of the slave does begin with
destroying the original kinship but is then further destroyed by the slave ship. The
chances of you surviving alone or with total strangers is low which is why there
was such a high suicide and death rate board the slave trade ships. Before the
slaves boarded the ships for the new world, the slave owners mastered the art of
destroying the family. An example of this is in Equiano s writing as his sisters was
...torn from me, and immediately carried away, while I was left in a state of
distraction not to be described. I cried and grieved continually... (Equiano, 47).
Emphasis on the phrase state of distraction as this is what makes the sentence so
powerful. When the strong kin were broken between him and his sister, he is left in
this state, a state that then could be used by the captors to put the thoughts of despair
and hopelessness in the enslaved mind. This disconnect of family helped weaken the
enslaved to become more submissive and easier to capture, then later to control. Once
this disconnect is established and

Difference Between Isolation And Social Isolation
Modern cities today are populated with hundreds of thousands to billions of citizens
sharing their built environment. As urban populations grow so does a dilemma;
social isolation the lack of civil association, of one to one human relationships, of
feeling a sense of belonging, especially in a city. The urban environment contributes
to social isolation in a multitude of ways. Even with the growth of urban populations
social isolation is a problem that affects even the most populated cities around the
world. This a problem that affects even the most populated cities around the world
due to decisions made in the past. By looking major elements that play a role in cities
across United States one can focus on understanding the needs of urban population,
particularly those who are isolated to diminish social isolation and build social
connectedness through planning. The urban environment contributes to social
isolation in a multitude of ways such as urban renewal rapidly occurring and the built
environments physical barriers. Social isolation is in relation to its urban
surroundings and its conditions. Urban planningcan influence inclusive cities and
build modern urban environments that no longer contribute to social isolation. Social
isolation is a widespread experience than most people acknowledge. In the text
Social Isolation in Modern Cities Hortulanus provides a study held in the United

Essay about Leonard Peltier Should be Released from Prison
Leonard Peltier is currently serving time in the Leavenworth federal penitentiary for
the shooting deaths of two Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) agents. According
to FBI documents, at around 11:50 A.M. on June 26th, 1975, agents Jack Color and
Ron Williams were supposedly searching for Jimmy Eagle, a thief wanted for
stealing a pair of cowboy boots. The agents encroached on the Jumping Bull
Compound in Oglala, South Dakota of the PineRidge reservation, in two separate
vehicles that no one could recognize (Incident). In this area, there were several
members of the American Indian Movement(AIM). After the intrusion of the agents,
someone and it is unsure who fired a shot and a shootout began. By the end of the

In fact, the evidence is so inconclusive, contradictory, and vague that reasonable doubt
abounds when one tries to objectively look at the evidence at hand.
The evidence linking Peltier to the shooting of the either of the agents is non
existent. First, there are major problems with linking Peltier to any gun that may
have caused a fatal injury. According to FBI documentation, the FBI found a
damaged AR 15 rifle in the burned out car of another AIM activist, Robert
Robideau, who was also at the Jumping Bull Compound on the day of June 26, 1975
(Incident). The FBI later would assert that the gun was Peltier s, and that it was
matched to a shell casing found in the trunk of one the agents cars.
However, according to a documented FBI ballistics test carried out on October 12,
1975, the AR 15 rifle found in Robideau s car didn t match bullet found on the
scene; even if it is assumed to be Peltier s gun, the gun cannot be linked to any
bullets found in the crime scene (Incident). The FBI also did another, less effective
form of test on the bullet that showed that the bullet might have come from the
damaged gun. (Incident) However, since the second method of testing was more
prone to fault, error, and interpretation of the agents, it should not be used in light of
the first. The best the FBI could prove from the test was that the bullet came from

To What Extent Has Modern Liberalism Departed from...
There are huge differences between classical and modern liberalism and as a result
classical liberals believe that modern liberals have not stayed true to initial ideas
posed by the likes of John Locke given that modern liberals have embraced
collectivism while classical liberals favoured pure individualism. But they are
fundamentally both forms of liberalismso are united in their belief of freedom and
rights of the individual but they have slightly different views on the type of freedom
they support.
Classical liberalism has a belief in utilitarianism first posed by Jeremy Bentham, this
is where individuals make tiny calculations about whether their actions will maximise
pleasure or minimise pain . This is an egotistical form of ... Show more content on

T.H. Green argued that freedom is the ability of the individual to develop
individuality and this is a positive thing. This is thus done through self fufillment
and pushing one s own knowledge. Positive freedom places emphasis on the
individual flourishing rather than survival of the fittest so therefore the state
should offer equal opportunities to all. This has seen modern liberals support the
welfare state whereas classical liberals focused on standing on your own feet. But,
this is not totally different to core liberal beliefs. The state only intervenes to ensure
equality such as education and health. Modern liberals defend the welfare state on
the basis of equality of opportunity. The welfare state has attempted to address
issues such as idleness and want and squalor , named by the Beveridge Report by
William Beveridge. Overall, Modern liberals believe in providing an equal playing
field to help the individual flourish in society rather than the individual just battling
for themselves.
This belief in some state intervention and positive freedom has lead liberals of
modern times to a belief in welfare and economic management. Modern liberals
support economic management, proposed first by John Maynard Keynes, who
argued that governments could manage their economies in order to thrive. They
believe in a mixed economy where you sometimes must tax and spend and yet other

The Impact Of War As Portrayed In Ceremony By Leslie Marmon Silko Introduction Leslie Marmon Silko s Ceremony, the most important novel of the Native American Renaissance, is among the most widely taught and studied novels in higher education today. In it, Silko recounts a young man s search for consolation in his tribe s history and traditions, and his resulting voyage of self discovery and discovery of the world. The main character Tayo must come to terms with himself and his surrounding environment upon his return from World War II. He is suffering from a sort of posttraumatic stress disorder which has affected him physically as well as emotionally due to the fact that he has survived as a prisoner of war in Japan. Consequently he must deal with all of the horrific memories when he returns to live with his family on the Laguna Puebloreservation in New Mexico. To compound his problems, Tayo is half Caucasian and half Native American, so he must also deal with the added pressures of bi culturalism. He is torn between the Native American world and the white world, and is unable to feel a secure security or belonging. Tayo s friends and family believe that they know the nature of and antidote for Tayo s illness and depression, however it is only the Native American ceremonies, which will truly help him. He needs to witness the convergence of life and truly understand the cyclical nature of his emotions and events that he has experienced. With the help and wisdom of Old

California s Right to Know Act California Right to Know Act: Time Newspaper has learnt that it s not surprising that Internet companies have electronic dossiers that contain personal information for individuals who subscribe to the websites. Generally, these companies have obtained the information from people based on individual s visit to the website, sent and received emails, tagged photos, and searches people carry out. However, the extent of personal information known by these Internet companies has remained largely unknown as well who they provide and/or sell this information to. However, Internet companies continue to gather lots of personal information from different people who focus on carrying out online activities on a daily basis. Currently, it s estimated that these firms gather personal information from nearly 500 million users but are hesitant to provide this information to the other firms or individuals. As their unwillingness to share has attracted significant congressional inquiry, things could finally change in California following the introduction of a bill that may force companies to disclose the kind of personal information they have gathered and how this information is being used. Dr. Charles Quist Adade Mel Brooks Blazing Saddles, sheds light to the cultural problems of the Western era through satire with elements of parody within. John Vogel describes Blazing Saddles as The Ultimate Western Spoof. The problem of racism is the main focus of this film. Since this time, many of the famous films have become household names. For some people, the reason they have been introduced to this film genre is because of their grandparents or parents. For others, they may have a genuine interest to understand this culture that has transformed itself to fit with a new era of time. Although these films have been able to generate great amounts of revenue, they are full of underlying elements that show the cultural issues of that time period. Moreover, some of these elements may not be noticeable to everyone at first, but that is where the satire and parody come into play. Satire is a technique employed by writers to expose and criticize foolishness and corruption of an individual or a society by using humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule. The European leader that I have chosen to prove what advice Machiavelli gave in The Prince is relevant and what is not, is Edward Heath. Some of Edwards work relates to the advice given by Machiavelli while many of it is the pure opposite of Machiavelli s advice. Edward Heath was prime Minister for the Conservative Party from June 1970 through March 1975. While he was in ruling, in 1972 unemployment began to rise considerably in Europe. In order to to help this crisis and reduce the amount of unemployment Heath inflated the economy which eventually made everything worse. Machiavelli is basically saying it s ok to be dishonest and not keep your promise in order to be a great leader. This is not true because Edward lied and that did not make him a powerful or a better leader, it just made him the very opposite. Being dishonest is one thing that is not true or relevant to being a successful leader which is one reason why Machiavelli s advice in The Prince is not
  • 8. Analysis Of The Magician s Nephew, By C. S. Lewis Living and growing up in London during the twentieth century was a time full of hardships and sacrifices. Likewise, it was also an era of religious persecution towards various religious groups (Schoenl 245). After World War II, Christianity flourished and was an influence on millions of people and writers, like Clive Staples Lewis. C.S. Lewis was an Irish writer born in 1898, a time when Europe was the epicenter of the world. Although having spent most of his life in England, his Irish roots can be seen and felt in all his novels. His marvelous readings may seem like adventurous, mythical works, but they hold a deeper message of morality and religionthat intrigue the reader into desiring more. C.S. Lewis has a magnificent way of connecting his novels to cultural events and myths. The first novel in the series, The Magician s Nephew, tells the classical story of the biblical book of Genesis in a form that young elementary readers understand how Godeffortlessly creates the earth and how the fictional world of Narnia came into being. The reflection of this cultural act can be seen in the experiments Uncle Andrew conducts on his Guiney pigs. He sends them off into other worlds, watches others explode as his experiments fail, and simply does not care for any animal rights just as many Europeans did not care either (Lewis Ch.

Amphetamine (then called Benzedrine ) was first synthesized in the early 1900 s through a serendipitous discovery while searching for a cheaper substitute of another drug called ephedrine. The chemist who discovered this new drug, G.A Alles, then conducted experiments and found that this new drug was powerful stimulant. As a result, it was introduced to the public in 1935. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ADHD is linked to a dysregulation in the catecholaminergic systems (dopamine, norepinephrine) in the prefrontal cortex and subcortical regions, both of which are implicated in many cognitive functions such as prioritizing stimuli, impulsivity and attention [3]. Seeing as amphetamines are involved in these same systems, one can see why they can be used to treat problems involving those regions. Amphetamines have a high affinity for catecholamine transporters, especially VMAT2, which a vesicular monoamine transporter that carries newly synthesized monoamines in the cytosol into vesicles at the nerve terminal for storage until they are to be released following an action potential. It competes with endogenous monoamines for transport, and as a result, the cytosol remains full of monoamines because their translocation into vesicles is inhibited. In addition, amphetamines also inhibit monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that metabolizes intracellular monoamines, further increasing the level of free monoamines which spurs the VMAT2 to mobilize the monoamines from the cytosol and release them into the synapse, a process called reverse transport [1]. As a result, people with ADHD can function without their usual cognitive impairments. New studies have recently shown that
  • 10. Mary Shelley s Frankenstein And The Bride Of Frankenstein... It is amazing how words on a page take a life of their own once they are written. An author s story can take readers away on a magic carpet ride, to a magical castle that anything can happen in Britain, even through a wardrobe to a land far away and draft them in the battle of a lifetime. But what is even more fascinating is that unlike humans, the words on the page never changes. From this moment to 200 years from now, the words on this page will always be the same, it is only the reader and the world around them that changes. Take for example Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. In 1818, Shelley had a nightmare that lead her to write her novel as a personification of the Victorian Culture s fascination of science and death. In 1934, director James Whaleadapted the material into The Bride of Frankensteinfilm, and was an allegory for pre WWII unity, then in 1997, someone interpreted the film as a homosexual allegory for the 1990 s. This paper will examine how Mary Shelley adapted her nightmare into an allegory for her Victorian era audience, how James Whale used her original text to turn The Bride of Frankenstein into a message of unity for a pre WWII audience, as well as how Garry Morris uses Whale s film to create a pro same sex marriage message out of the text in 1997. Mary Shelley adapted her nightmare of a mad scientist bringing a dead body back to life, into a text that reflects Victorian Customs is by featuring the importance of education in Victorian society as

Today, the effects of the changes caused by men can be felt by nearly 17,000 species of plants and animals that are face to face with extinction (Kucuk and Erturk, 2013). This threat of the mass extinction of the species was recognised several decades ago; however, since then, the best efforts have hardly done more than slow the pace of the accelerating damage (Myers, 2003). More than a decade after Myers (2003) made this point, Professor Sir John Lawton (2015) explains that biodiversity loss is still getting worse, not better; pollution in the oceans is rising; the planet seems to be running out of fresh water and its soils are degrading at an alarming rate. Essentially, the effects and total resource needs of human society were extremely small for most of human history. Nevertheless, since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, society has been growing in size and technological power, causing an ever growing impact on the biosphere, to the point that the ecosystems services that society depends on are being degraded in ways that cannot be sustained (Robert et al., 2012). Of course, none of us are greedy, it is only the other fellow that s greedy. The world runs on individuals pursuing their separate interests. Milton Friedman (2002) A common trend within developed and developing countries is foreign direct investment (FDI) as a major source of capital. What differs is the effect it has for the nation s people. The current economic and technological development, its government policy and a nation s labour force all alter the potential outcomes for a nation. This report will examine the effects of international corporations becoming involved in the discovery and extraction of oil reservoirs in Nigeria and compare it to the results in Norway. It will explain how the stability of the governments affect the long term outcomes. Norway is a prospering country, its people are ranked as the second happiest in the world, and its government is seen as trustworthy and influent. Nigeria has a turbulent past which the discovery of oil has exasperated. These issues are recognised by the World Bank who have responded by labelling Nigeria as a fragile state due to its risk of armed conflict, epidemic diseases and failed governance. (World Bank, 2014) It appears that when a country is faced with the influx of foreign investors, it is the strength of the government that will determine who controls the power. The other two are values that have the intention to better society but in different, opposing ways. What are the ethics and values that make a society perfect? There are thousands of them and consequently cannot all be listed. I will talk about some of them that are important and crucial to a perfect society. You might be confused as to why would a society need selfish ethics and values? • 19. The Cuban Population And Population Growth And The Rate Of... Cuba is currently described as a developing country and when exploring this countries history it became clear why they are considered so. At the moment, the population is decreasing at a rate of 3% according to cia.gov. According to prb.org, the birth rate per thousand is eleven and death rate per thousand is nine which can lead one to infer that the rate of natural increase, is 2 per 1000(or .2%). Something that can be taken away from these stats is that the rate of natural increase is positive while the rate of populationgrowth is negative. The reason for this is an irrational number of young people who leave this country.According prb.org, the net migration rate is 5. This means that for every 1000 people in the country, five people leave. This number is not supposed to be negative; however, it is because of how many people leave this country. Most of the people leaving are the young people who will end up having children. This becomes a problem because if all of the people who are of childbearing age leave and have children elsewhere, there are no young people to help offset the old population. According to the site havannatimes.org, The combination of young people leaving the country and low birth rates makes Cuban society endure a population aging process. Reflection in Iris Murdoch s Under the Net Reflection in Iris Murdoch s Under the Net In her novel Under the Net, Iris Murdoch examines the nature of reality through the thoughts and relationships of the novel s main character, Jake Donaghue. A recurring theme in the novel is the idea of reflection, in both senses of the word: Jake is continually thinking about ideas, and he is also forever trying to see himself as he really is. Many of the instances of reflection in the novel occur near rivers or are connected in some way to currents. As we shall see, Iris Murdoch uses reflections in Under the Net to represent the mirror opposites of reality and appearance. We should note that it is her reflection and not Sadie that Jake sees: [T]he curious fantasy came to me that if I were to look under the drier at the real face and not at the reflection I should see there some terrible old witch (p53). The relationship between appearance and reality is a central theme in the novel, and Jake s search for the truth includes the desire to learn if one can ever truly know another person. Jake s fear of intimacy is due in part to his concern for the truth; he states that although he once briefly thought of marrying Anna, he has never wanted a communion of the souls because it is already hard enough to tell the truth to oneself (p31). Jake nevertheless again comes to care deeply for Anna, and in a frantic search of Paris, he finally finds her at the city s fireworks celebration: The river was black now under the night sky and glassy, a black mirror in which every lamp raised a pole of light and the conflagration in the sky above dropped an occasional piece of gold. The line of people on the other bank was clearly reflected in it. Anna s image was quite still beneath her. I wondered if in the river...my own reflection was as vividly shown. (191) Anna does not see Jake s reflection, however, and he leaves Paris without having talked to her. In a comic distortion of reality, Jake believes that Hugo loves Anna, while in fact Hugo loves Sadie, Anna loves Hugo, and Sadie loves Jake; their relationships

Allegory In John Steinbeck s The Grapes Of Wrath During the 1930 s numerous families were left home and landless due to the depression and the dust bowl which resulted in a lack of crops produced. These families ventured west to embark on a new life. In the book The Grapes of wrath by John Steinbeck, allegory is present in the form of symbolism. Symbolism is shown in the form of a grasshopper, a turtle and a baby. The grasshopper is a symbol in The Grapes of Wrathbeing it represents how the migrants were treated when they moved West. In the beginning of the book, while Tom was hitching a ride from the man in the red truck, a grasshopper flipped through the window and lighted on top of the instrument panel... Joad reached forward and crushed it s hard skull like head with his fingers (12). Instead of just pushing the grasshopper out of the window, Tom killed it due to the hatred he developed in 1931, as grasshoppers swarmed onto the farm and ate all of the crops, ruining that year s harvest. During the book, the treatment of migrants resembles that of the grasshopper from the land owners. The landowners develop a hatred for the migrants for the sake of their belief that the migrants are trying to take over their land; just as the grasshoppers had done to the farmers in the Midwest region of the United States.... On one side of the tort reform movement, defendants such as corporations and medical professionals want limits on the damages awarded to the plaintiff. The benefit of tort reform for defendant is the financial savings. However, a cap placed on medical malpractice cases and other cases that are of negligence would standardize the monetary compensation regardless of the damage. In my opinion, Medical malpractice tort reform is a gray area, for each breach of the standard of care involves a different story and person, therefore the damages vary and should be evaluated fairly. In this essay, both sides of the argument are discussed, with a focus on medical malpractice tort reform. Proof of Malpractice For a plaintiff to triumph a claim of medical malpractice for negligence, four elements must be established. The first element is proving the defendant owed a duty of care to the plaintiff. The second is to show that the defendant breached the duty to the plaintiff. The third is to show that the plaintiff was harmed and experienced damages. Finally, the fourth is to show that the plaintiff was harmed by the actions of the defendant (Greenberg, 2009). How does medical malpractice differ from a standard negligence claim? Medical malpractice differs from a standards negligence claim and some states have different definitions. During the writing of the bill of right there were the Federalist and the anti federalist the two were in disagreement of whether the ten amendments should be added. The Federalist felt as if the constitution was already completed and nothing should be added, although the anti federalist felt that the people s rights should be set in stone, and some things needed to be added to the constitution to reassure the people. The anti Federalist wanted to change the wording of the United States Constitution. To the men, the dirty roller trowel and broken jar are an inconvenience; they immediately conclude that the woman must be at fault in her housekeeping abilities because they all know John Wright as a good, respectable man but from the point of view of the women Mrs. Wright is a person who loved to do her own canning and baking, things her husband would never tolerate. The trifles are the clues to the murder and why it
  • 41. Essay On Standing Tall The book, Standing Tall: The Kevin Everett Story (Published in 2008) written by Sam Carchidi is about a former NFL player overcoming a seemingly irreversible injury during his professional career. I selected this book because it reminds me of the days when I played football in high school and how fortunate I was to be able to walk away from the sport with no severe injuries. I constantly read about the freak accidents in football that either left an athlete with a lifelong injury or sometimes even death. This book stood out to me because it is about a player who went against the odds and was able to somewhat recover from what seemed like an injury that would have left him disabled for the rest of his life. The book begins conversation about how Kevin Everettwas entering his third year as a tight end and special team s player for the Buffalo Bills organization with a promising future ahead of him. This was all about to change in the season opening game for Keven against the Denver Broncos. During the opening game Kevin was making special teams tackle after a punt to put the Broncos far back into their own territory, but that tackle was about to change Kevin s life. After taking down the opposing player Kevin was left in the ground motionless and not responding. Kevin was carted off the field and taken to one of the nearest hospitals. After... I would recommend this book for anyone that has a passion for sports or generally likes a good read about someone who defeats adversity. This book has defiantly impacted me in the aspect that Kevin did something

The Expansion Of Western European Travelers The undeniable expansion of Western European travelers came with a toll that has stamped history books with pages of inhumane and unfathomable treatment of people. The slave ship saw the demise of many millions of people but for a few, a re birth. The slave trade itself saw the destruction of not only families but of the individual human; their mind, body and spirit. The art of destroying the human starts at the root of which they would be most bound to, this being their family. The use of slave labourers to produce goods such as cotton and tobacco helped finance the colonial economy and advance the slave trade. This expansion of the slave trade would not have been so successful if the familial ties between the slaves was not broken, without this disconnect, the slave trade may not have been what it was. The beginning of the destruction of the slave does begin with destroying the original kinship but is then further destroyed by the slave ship. The chances of you surviving alone or with total strangers is low which is why there was such a high suicide and death rate board the slave trade ships. Before the slaves boarded the ships for the new world, the slave owners mastered the art of destroying the family. An example of this is in Equiano s writing as his sisters was ...torn from me, and immediately carried away, while I was left in a state of distraction not to be described. I cried and grieved continually... (Equiano, 47). Emphasis on the phrase state of distraction as this is what makes the sentence so powerful. When the strong kin were broken between him and his sister, he is left in this state, a state that then could be used by the captors to put the thoughts of despair and hopelessness in the enslaved mind. This disconnect of family helped weaken the enslaved to become more submissive and easier to capture, then later to control. Once this disconnect is established and

Essay about Leonard Peltier Should be Released from Prison Leonard Peltier is currently serving time in the Leavenworth federal penitentiary for the shooting deaths of two Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) agents. According to FBI documents, at around 11:50 A.M. on June 26th, 1975, agents Jack Color and Ron Williams were supposedly searching for Jimmy Eagle, a thief wanted for stealing a pair of cowboy boots. The agents encroached on the Jumping Bull Compound in Oglala, South Dakota of the PineRidge reservation, in two separate vehicles that no one could recognize (Incident). In fact, the evidence is so inconclusive, contradictory, and vague that reasonable doubt abounds when one tries to objectively look at the evidence at hand. The evidence linking Peltier to the shooting of the either of the agents is non existent. First, there are major problems with linking Peltier to any gun that may have caused a fatal injury. According to FBI documentation, the FBI found a damaged AR 15 rifle in the burned out car of another AIM activist, Robert Robideau, who was also at the Jumping Bull Compound on the day of June 26, 1975 (Incident). The FBI later would assert that the gun was Peltier s, and that it was matched to a shell casing found in the trunk of one the agents cars. However, according to a documented FBI ballistics test carried out on October 12, 1975, the AR 15 rifle found in Robideau s car didn t match bullet found on the scene; even if it is assumed to be Peltier s gun, the gun cannot be linked to any bullets found in the crime scene (Incident). The FBI also did another, less effective form of test on the bullet that showed that the bullet might have come from the damaged gun. (Incident) However, since the second method of testing was more prone to fault, error, and interpretation of the agents, it should not be used in light of the first. The best the FBI could prove from the test was that the bullet came from

There are huge differences between classical and modern liberalism and as a result classical liberals believe that modern liberals have not stayed true to initial ideas posed by the likes of John Locke given that modern liberals have embraced collectivism while classical liberals favoured pure individualism. But they are fundamentally both forms of liberalismso are united in their belief of freedom and rights of the individual but they have slightly different views on the type of freedom they support. Classical liberalism has a belief in utilitarianism first posed by Jeremy Bentham, this is where individuals make tiny calculations about whether their actions will maximise pleasure or minimise pain . This is thus done through self fufillment and pushing one s own knowledge. Positive freedom places emphasis on the individual flourishing rather than survival of the fittest so therefore the state should offer equal opportunities to all. This has seen modern liberals support the welfare state whereas classical liberals focused on standing on your own feet. But, this is not totally different to core liberal beliefs. The state only intervenes to ensure equality such as education and health. Modern liberals defend the welfare state on the basis of equality of opportunity. The welfare state has attempted to address issues such as idleness and want and squalor , named by the Beveridge Report by William Beveridge. Overall, Modern liberals believe in providing an equal playing field to help the individual flourish in society rather than the individual just battling for themselves. This belief in some state intervention and positive freedom has lead liberals of modern times to a belief in welfare and economic management. Modern liberals support economic management, proposed first by John Maynard Keynes, who argued that governments could manage their economies in order to thrive. They believe in a mixed economy where you sometimes must tax and spend and yet other times you
