Essay On Environment And Pollution
Writing an essay on the topic of "Environment and Pollution" can be a challenging task,
considering the vast scope and complexity of the subject matter. This topic encompasses a wide
range of issues, from the impact of human activities on the natural environment to the various
forms of pollution affecting ecosystems globally. The challenge lies in effectively addressing the
multifaceted aspects of environmental issues while maintaining coherence and clarity in the essay.
To begin with, researching the latest data and information on environmental concerns is crucial.
The dynamic nature of environmental problems, coupled with ongoing scientific discoveries,
requires a thorough understanding of current issues. Staying updated on environmental policies,
scientific findings, and global initiatives is essential to present a well-informed and relevant
essay.
Crafting a compelling thesis statement that encapsulates the core message of the essay is another
hurdle. The thesis should reflect a clear stance on environmental issues, whether it's advocating
for sustainable practices, addressing specific pollution problems, or proposing solutions to global
environmental challenges.
Organizing the essay structure can be daunting, as the content must flow logically and
coherently. The introduction should grab the reader's attention, present the thesis, and outline the
main points. The body paragraphs need to delve into specific aspects of the environment and
pollution, providing evidence, examples, and arguments to support the thesis. Transitioning
smoothly between paragraphs and maintaining a balanced approach to different facets of the
topic can be a demanding task.
Moreover, addressing counterarguments and opposing viewpoints adds complexity to the writing
process. A well-rounded essay on the environment should acknowledge alternative perspectives
while effectively refuting or integrating them into the overall argument.
The conclusion is equally crucial, summarizing key points, reinforcing the thesis, and leaving a
lasting impression on the reader. Striking the right balance between optimism and realism in
proposing solutions or calling for action adds another layer of difficulty.
In conclusion, writing an essay on the topic of "Environment and Pollution" demands extensive
research, a nuanced understanding of the subject matter, and adept organizational and writing
skills. However, by navigating these challenges thoughtfully, one can contribute meaningfully to
the discourse on environmental issues.

Westward Expansion Dbq
From the years 1800 1850 the nation was filled with battles and affluence. Westward
Expansion was America s inclination to possess western territories that have yet to be
claimed or negotiate claims with other countries. Expansion of the U.S. was a cause
for most battles fought during this time; however, our nation was continuing to
prosper. Under, the idea of Manifest Destiny which was the belief that the United
Stateswas divinely made to expand from coast to coast, the country began to use any
means necessary to expand. Among these were battles, purchases from other
countries, and treaties. Conflicts during this period included, but not limited to, The
Oregon Territory, Louisiana Purchase, and the Mexican American war. I believe

Many nations such as Spain, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States claimed this
territory, but under the Transcontinental Treaty, Spain ceded its claims to the territory
to the United States (The Oregon Territory, 1846). It was stated in Source B, Polk
was eager to settle the boundary of the Oregon territory and proposed a settlement on
the 49 degree line to Great Britain (The Oregon Territory, 1846). Expansion continues
when Mexico offers Americans cheap land sold through recruiting agents. In this land
many Anglo Americans from the US settled in Mexican Texas.
While Polk and Great Britain discussed claims to Oregon, the United States and
Mexico were entering war. The Mexican American War was a result of Manifest
Destiny and the annexation of Texas in 1845. Texas had been in a border dispute
with Mexico at the time of the annexation, leading to the of the U.S. Mexico claims
to the border. In 1848, the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican War and
added more than 1 million square miles to the United States. The entry of this land
led many Americans to ponder on whether slavery would be accepted in new
Analysis Of Dante s Inferno
Dante s Divine Comedy is a work that has lasted many generations, and has greatly
contributed to even our own visualization of the afterlife. It is separated into three
parts with the most striking section of the work being the Inferno. In Inferno, the
character Dante travels through hell, and identifies the sins and consequent
punishment of those who are damned. However, Infernois not a simple report of an
event, but also includes several literary devices that convey grander and more
significant themes of sin, punishment, and the afterlife. These devices Dante uses in
his work are, but not limited to, symbolism, allegory, allusion, and a special kind of
irony called contrapasso, which will be discussed in this essay. Dante also arranges...

However, when many similar allusions appear in what seems to be a deliberate
order, it becomes noticeable that the author wanted to convey a topic or argument in
his or her writing without explicitly saying so. But, why do authors choose to hide
their ideas behind recurring symbols and allusions? They usually do this because it is
easier for them to demonstrate their beliefs through images and symbols than words.
Additionally, creating a text that has multiple layers of meaning also enriches the
work, and this is underlined by The Divine Comedy s long standing popularity.
(Encyclopedia Britannica) The Divine Comedy is considered to be an allegorical
work because there are many proposed theories for allegories throughout the story,
and even some that encompass the entire work. Additionally, because of its religious
subject matter, many scholars study The Divine Comedy as they would a religious
work. For many, this entails interpreting the text in both a literal and figurative sense
(Encyclopedia Britannica).
One of the most popular and debated events is in Canto IX when the characters Dante
and Virgil arrive at the gates to the city of Dis. Beyond the locked gates, in the city,
are the remaining circles of Hell the characters need to travel through. However, they
are spotted by three furies (some kind of beasts in hell), and are
Statement Of Exerpose In Sports Science
The study of sports science incorporates many areas, such as exercise physiology,
psychology, biomechanics, nutrition, and sports pedagogy. Exercise physiology is
one of the key subjects in sports science and I want to be at the forefront of this.
Since young, I love to play sports. My passion in sport began at the age of 12 when
I first joined the Taekwondo classes in the school. Since then, I have actively
participated in other sports events in the school. This had led me to pursue a degree
in sport and exercise science. During my undergraduate study, I found a lot of useful
information that helped me to prepare myself to the National championship and
Malaysian Games. I have gained a strong interest in exercise physiology; the study
which involves how physical activity, exercise or training influences the structures
and functions of the human body. INTEREST!!! What specifically interests or excites
you about the subject?
I have furthered my knowledge in exercise physiology by reading journals and
articles related to my interest of study. To gain a good practical understanding of
exercise physiology, I volunteered to help my seniors, who are currently working as
an exercise physiologist in the National Sports Institute of Malaysia. By assisting ...

The Role Of Safe Sex In Women
Brothels do not provide condoms for the girls. Without the precaution for safe sex,
many young women end up with HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases. In
Sold, Monica is thrown out in the street because she has the virus there is no cure
for. The girls were oblivious to finding this out, as they were not educated on the
symptoms associated with the virus. The girls at Happiness House find this out
when Mumtaz reveals, She has the virus (McCormick 210). The symptoms she
faced were getting progressively worse, while having sex with men. At the time
Lakshmi, and the other girls had no way of knowing that the virus Monica had was
HIV. At Happiness House, Mumtaz did not allow or provide the girls access to
condoms. Mumtaz was not worried about the girls getting sick, more so the money
that would be made of the men raping the women. In addition, in the article, Sex

Standardized Test Scores An Accurate Representation Of A...
Are standardized test scores an accurate representation of a student s abilities?
Standardized tests can be found at any level of a student s academic career, but are
they accurate indicators of a student s academic abilities? Standardized tests are used
to measure a student s academic abilities, and overall knowledge. In theory, a student
s skills can be determined by examining the limited data collected from the test.
However, standardized test do not fully represent a student s abilities, and cumulative
knowledge. Many factors may affect the validity of the scores, and the accuracy of
the assessment. Instructor s teaching directly for the test, being able to guess on
multiple choice questions, examining only test scores, and ignoring other academic
factors contribute to the biased representation of students academic abilities.
Because instructors are teaching directly for the test, the data collected may not be an
accurate representation of the student s true abilities. As standardized test grow in
popularity among the school system, the pressure to achieve high scores rapidly
builds. The importance of high scores goes beyond individual students performances,
and teacher evaluations. Serious repercussions could result from poor scores, or
performances. For example, schools that continue to fail to improve may be closed,
and districts that continue to fail may be subject to state takeover (Posner). With the
weight of the success of the school on their shoulders,
Plutonium Missing Magnet
Being a metal, plutonium should technically be magnetic, however, all evidence and
studies up to this point in time have shown the exact opposite. A team at Los Alamos
National Laboratory (https://www.lanl.gov/) have found where this missing

But there are plenty of metals that don t stick to a magnet.
Yes, that s true, though magnetic in this sense means something a little different.
Metals that don t stick to magnets are known as non ferrous metals . Some of these
metals include copper, aluminum, lead, and nickel along with alloys such as brass.
These metals share many similarities, but the one that keeps them from sticking to
magnets is the fact that they don t have trace amounts of iron in them. The iron is what

Plutonium s Odd State and Missing Magnetism
Marc Janoschek (http://www.lanl.gov/discover/news stories archive/2014/November
/janoschek wolfram prandl prize.php) of the Los Alamos Lab says that, on the
atomic level, each atom of a metal has a set number of electrons that orbit the nucleus
that never changes. This set number of electrons is referred to as the metal in its
ground state . The neutrons and electrons both have a magnetic field that creates an
opportunity for the atom to be aligned in another magnetic field.
However, when plutonium s ground state was first measured, it was found that its
ground state could consist of four, five, or six electrons. There was no constant
amount of electrons in its unaltered, fixed ground state. Plutonium fluctuates between
three different ground states while also simultaneously being in all three states at the
same time. The basis for this theory was first imagined at Rutgers University in 2007,
but thanks to Janoschek and his team, it has been proven correct. The reason to
plutonium s missing magnetism has been
Octopus Worksheet
Left side: On this side students who struggle more with counting numbers 1 20 will
work on this side the most. Here the theme is under the sea. I have an octopus on the
board. There are ten legs on the octopus that have the numbers written in order above
each leg. I will have students say aloud the numberof each leg, and count out green
puffballs that represent the number each leg is. Below the octopus is a scene of the
ocean. Here I have attached different sea animals. Each one has a different number of
the same type of animal. (Ex: fish, turtle, and crab) I will have students help me count
the number of each individual animal. Once they count the amount of one animal that
is on the board they are to find that number on their worksheet. The worksheet has

Here the theme is based on a movie theater. I have Popsicle sticks that have numbers
1 20 written on them. Students will draw a Popsicle stick and say the number aloud.
They will then write the number on the dry erase paper I attached to the board. I
created two enlarged ten frames. After the student writes the number they will use
magnetic movie tickets and stick the number of movie tickets on the ten frame that
represents the number on the popsicle stick the drew. Next the student will use fake
popcorn and count popcorn into a popcorn bag for the number they drew.
Right side: This side I designed for students who are a little more advanced. I spray
painted this side with chalkboard paint so that the students can directly write on the
board. The students will role a dice to determine the number they are going to use.
They will then fill in the four boxes on the chalkboard paint. The first one requires
them to write the number. The second one has the student write tally marks for the
number. The third box asks the students to fill in a ten frame. Lastly, the fourth one
has the students draw a picture. (Example: draw 3 triangles, 4 squares.)
Mark Twain s The Prince And The Pauper
The Prince and the Pauper is a novel written by Mark Twain. This story is about
two young boys who traded lives following the trading of clothing. One boy was a
son born into royalty, the other born into a hard life as a son of beggars and
thieves. Throughout the book both boys go on many adventures in their new
temporary lives. Each boy learning about each other, and more importantly
themselves. Twain writes his readers a story like no other, his writing style, story,
themes, and the whole book itself is an adventure. Twain s writing style has a very
olden feel compared to modern day books. This book really reminded a lot of
Shakespeare and his writing style. Twain s writing can be described as archaic,
meaning he has old fashioned vocabulary
Stand Your Ground Laws Are Relevant For American
Society...
Stand Your Ground laws have been at the center of escalating deliberation, mainly
after the law was applied in a number of exceedingly broadcasted events (Auerbach,
2015, p.1). Stand Your Ground law is a term for a type of self protection in which
an individual is legally allowed to defend his or herself against a threat or
perceived threat against their life; law requires that individual be in a place he or
she is lawfully allowed to be (Long, N.D.). The debate concentrated on whether
Stand Your Ground laws justifiably serve to protect the public. The laws are relevant
to American society s perception on self defense. On February 26, 2012, one of the
cases that made a disturbance in many communities occurred. George Zimmerman, a
neighborhood watchman in Sandford, Florida called policeto report a suspicious
individual in the area. According to a Feb. 7, 2016 CNN report, while Zimmerman is
on the phone with a dispatcher, the dispatcher asked him if he was following the teen.
When Zimmerman replied that he was, the dispatcher said, We don t need you to do
that. Zimmerman was instructed not to get out of his SUV or approach the person ,
but Zimmerman disregarded the instructions given to him by the police dispatcher
(CNN, para.4). Zimmerman s neighborhood watchorganization was not registered
with the National Neighborhood Watch program, but was set up with the assistance
of the Stanford Police Department. Donald O
Analysis Of The Book The Stitches
Throughout the childhood of David Small, he had to face with difficult realities.
These difficulties came from many sources: his family, his illness, his society, ...
However, David still managed to survived through. All of the struggles are depicted
successfully in Stitches which are overwhelmed with silences and secrets via an
interesting form of literature: comic book.
The Stitches is a memoir by David Small about the life of himself since he was a
child. In the first pages of the book, the silence is prevailed the atmosphere as no
one in the Small family has a word to others in the dinner. No one talks, and no one
understand the others. After the dinner, members of the family live in their own
world: Dad ... [goes] down to his basement and thumped a punching bag , my
brother ... [beats] on his drum. (17) Even David learns a way of expressing ...
wordlessly as he is always getting sick. (18) His dad, as a doctor, is supposed to
know what to do to cure him. (20) However, his treatment consists of a heavy dose
of x rays exposure, which causes a growth on his neck. Initially this growth is
diagnosed as a sebaceous cyst; nevertheless, after the first surgery this growth is re
diagnosed as a dangerous cancer that one of his vocal cords must be removed
together with the tumor in the following surgery. This time David is physically
silenced; but his silence doesn t change anything in his house. They are still detached
from others. Moreover, his parents always complain that they

Abstract
Proper communication with any company is imperative to its daily operations and
employee morale. Communication is defined as purposeful activity of exchanging
information and meaning using various techniques or natural means. Large
companies can lose sight of this as they grow and grow outside of their center of
operations. When any company acquires additional business and begins to run it in a

The break down in the communication process has cost the company money and the
challenge of constant rework. The lack of communication is frustrating for lower
level employees as it seems to reach them last; yet impact them the greatest. They
are on the front line with the customers (doctors and hospitals) and have to deal
and try to correct the problems before they reach higher up management. There are
too many, capricious methods of communications that do not provide the
employees with a simplified, efficient process to perform their duties. The

Conformity And Cult Development
Cult development is fascinating phenomenon that occurs all around the world. Their
membership growth is a complex interaction facilitated by conformity and
manipulation. Cult membership can have a major impact on those who are involved.
Leaving a cult can cause much distress for both the ex member and their family. It is
important to understand cultaffiliation factors and the development of their
membership in order to provide proper therapeutic intervention for those who leave
cults.
Cults tend to appeal to individuals who have some sort of vulnerability that can be
exploited. A study done by Egan Hunter (1998) demonstrated that fact in adolescents.

Former cult members are an underserved population that experiences a unique set of

further cult affiliation. Members in cults experience extreme isolation from the
outside world and are typically cut off from their family. Family involvement is an
important component to therapeutic intervention with former cult members. Contact

The Use of Light in Bill Henson and Caravaggio s Work
Essay
Through the use of light, artists continue to receive a strong emotional response
from the audience. This is an essential element of an audience s perception of a
work it may determine whether the artwork is perceived as happy or depressing, or
even provides the difference between whether the work is friendly and welcoming, or
shocking and confronting. Artists have used light for a long time to stimulate the
emotions of the viewer. Two artists that have used this technique are Bill Henson and
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, or more simply known as just Caravaggio. Bill
Henson is a contemporary Australian photographer, born in 1955, while Caravaggio
was an Italian painter (1571 1610).

This is why his art was so successful in reaching his audience and connecting him
with the art world. This is a similar concept in Henson s work. Most of his subjects
are human figures, assisting him in the representation of his ideas in a confronting,
direct, and sometimes controversial way. The way that Henson achieves the same
effect of chiaroscuro in his photographs as Caravaggio does in his paintings, is
through his underexposure and adjustment in printing.
Henson s work is powerful, creating an illusion of both a painting and a film
through a combination of different techniques that make his work unique. The
most prominent feature and device of Henson s work is his use of light. The
majority of his work features dark tones and colours, sometimes slightly tinted with
yellow, red or blue. The brighter portions of Henson s photographs and his use of
light is tactically well controlled to uncover only crucial details. In some of his
photographs, Henson juxtaposes the colourful yet mysterious, distant city lights
through the use of bokkeh, with the underexposed, graphic images of the subject in
the foreground. Some examples of this in his work include several images from the
Untitled 2000/01 series, such as the girl sitting, the girl that is lying down, yet at the
same time positioned so to look as if she is in flight, and another image of a girl
lying on her stomach,

A Chi square is designed to analyze categorical data. That means that the data has
been counted and divided into categories. It will work with parametric or continuous
data. For Example, if you want to test whether attending class influences how
students perform on an exam, using test scores from (0 100) as data would not be
appropriate for a Chi square test. However, arranging students into the categories Pass
and Fail would. Additionally, the data in a Chi square grid should not be in the form
of percentages, or anything other than frequency (Count)
Summary Of Brahms Symphony No. 4
Brahms wrote Symphony No. 4 in E Minor in 1884. The work was first performed
in Meiningen, Germany in October 1885 and was an instant success because of its
masterful composition and unique style. Brahms s music and his fourth symphony
are often viewed as a bridge between the music of the baroque and romantic era.
Although Brahms is considered to be a romantic composer, his musicis unique from
others because you can hear both the style of older era composers and features of
romantic style in the texture of his works. This combination of baroque and
romantic style in his music helps create more balance in the music, which gives it a
blend that captured audiences and still entrances them today. Brahms was also
inspired by study of Beethoven s symphonies for their orchestral color and harmonic
structure; Brahms incorporates these features he enjoyed into his writing. The fourth
movement of Brahms symphony No. 4 is titled Allegro energico e passianato and is
known for its use of the Baroque style of Chaconne and other features that are found
in the Romantic style as well. Some of these include chromaticism, a melody that
jumps between major and minor keys but does not settle into a single mode, and
extended techniques to creature a richness and a wide pallet of sounds.
Brahms was a scholar and had a strong interest in Baroque music. His fourth
movement makes use of the Chaconne style. It is a series of repeated variations and
chord progressions, a form of ostinato or bass
Essay On Vietnam War Interview
I have learned a lot about what life was like at the time of the Vietnam War by
interviewing my grandfather. My grandfather, Franklin Torr, was living in Dover,
NH at the time, in his late thirties, married, and had three young children. The
Vietnam War impacted my grandfather s life in a unique way. One aspect of his life
that changed at the start of the war was that a lot of his tenants, in the mobile home
he owned, were in the New Hampshire National Guard and were stationed in
Vietnam, flying missions, and some were advisors. He said the following about
them; Of the tenants that fought in the war, they thought they were doing the right
thing at the time When asked if he could provide a story of one of his Vietnam War
veterans, he said that not a lot of them liked to talk about their war experiences in
depth, two of his tenants that served in Vietnam died in Vietnam. One of his former
classmates was a Marine Colonel, one thing he remembers this man mentioning was;

I had never talked with my grandfather about his military background or the
Vietnam War specifically, so it was enlightening to hear from him and connect his
personal experiences with things we have learned about in class. The Vietnam War
is often viewed as the war that changed everything. The United States government
and the relationship it shares with its citizens was forever changed. The role of the
media was transformed and more and more Americans put their trust in the press
over the government. No longer could our presidents and our representatives make
decisions for our nation without the fear of how the American people would react
existing in the back of their minds. As our leaders struggled to regain the respect of
other nations as a world power, the American people struggled to regain the
confidence and pride they once had in their own

group, whites assumed that African Americans of any age were all the same.
Baldwin reminisces of his childhood as describing activities frequently pursued as
a young boy. They used to play on the roof, and some kind of garbage dump near
the river. In the interview Baldwin tells us that he had been morally raised by his
father, whose relation to the church was very direct, and admits that the solitary
place to express pain was in the church. But now, and in the mid twentieth century,
the living conditions and attitudes of whites towards blacks has significantly
worsened. It is evident as Baldwin proclaims, the moral authority which was
present in the Negro Northern community when I was growing up has vanished,
and people talk about progress, and I look at Harlem...and it is much worse there
today than it was when I was growing up that indeed the well being and living
situations had decreased ( The Negro 1). Living conditions was only the half of it;
Baldwin proves that education had worsened as well when he projects that [i]t is

The Themes Of Death And Death
Cambridge Hinds
Big Question Paper
The Meaning of Death
The themes of life and death are used frequently throughout many ancient and modern
stories, and specifically, thoughts on death and what it means differ from author to
author, time period to time period, and circumstance to circumstance. Many works of
ancient literature address the meaning of death directly; examples include the drama
Medea by ancient Greek playwright Euripides in 431 BCE, and the Decameron by
Italian Giovanni Boccaccio in around 1353. As well as being popular themes in
ancient literature, however, death is used for significant meaning in modern novels,
movies, TV shows, and other forms of storytelling and entertainment. A good
example of this is the movie The Book of Life, directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez.
Dictionary.com defines death as: ...the total and permanent cessation of all the
vital functions of an organism. In many religions, death is a transition from this
world to another, whether it be for better or worse. In our modern western society,
death has many different views; it can be a bittersweet occasion as well as a tragic
one, depending on circumstances. As seen in Medea, the Decameron, and The
Book of Life, death always means an end to life, and an ultimate severance from the
living. However, these texts provide very different views of death, as well.
Respectively, it means tragic revenge, a feared end, and reconciliation as well as
separation.
In the tragedy Medea, death is central to

summer the temperature can reach over 100 degrees in the pizza shop. Working an 8
hour shift in these temperatures can be a grueling experience. The heatin the shop
matched with the buffet and non stop pizzaorder phone calls make it even worse. I
remember the first time working a long shift when I started working at Sam s. It
was harder than I would have ever imagined. The heat really affected my ability to
work efficiently. After a few hours I could tell I wasn t working as hard as I was at
the beginning of my shift. Working tired and hungry in that heat really drained a lot

Tyco Scandal Essay
Part 1 Facts of the Case
Prior to the Tyco scandal, the company was one of America s largest conglomerates,
with operating revenues of 38 billion dollars and 240,000 employees, worldwide.
Tyco Laboratories began operations in 1960, performing experimental work for the
U.S. government. The firm went public in 1964 and quickly expanded, mostly by
acquisition, to exploit the commercial applications of its work. Dennis Kozlowski
joined the company in 1975 as an assistant controller. The company subsequently
shifted its focus from growth to profits within its three primary divisions: fire
protection, electronics, and packaging. Kozlowski joined Tyco s board in 1987 and
became president and chief operating officer two years later. Kozlowski... Show more

The remainder of the 250 top managers resigned shortly after.
C. How was the scandal uncovered and by whom?
The situation began to unfold when the Securities and Exchange Commission was
probing into a restatement of the company s stock price. Kozlowski s business
practices raised some eyebrows. In 1999, the Securities and Exchange Commission
(SEC) initiated an inquiry into Tyco s practices that resulted in a restatement of the
company s earnings. In January, 2002, questionable accounting practices came to
light. Tyco had forgiven a $19 million, no interest loan to Kozlowski in 1998 and
had paid the CEO s income taxes on the loan. It was found that he company s stock
price had been overrated, and that the CEO and CFO had sold 100 million dollars
worth of shares, and then stated to the public that he was holding them, which was a
misrepresentation and misled the investors.
The major conspiracy was uncovered by Manhattan District Attorney, Robert
Morgenthau, who was investigating Kozlowski for income tax evasion for some
fine art work that he had purchased. As Morgenthau kept digging into the record
keeping of Tyco and Kozlowski, it was determined that there were other situations
that had occurred, such as a 10 million dollar loan that was totally forgiven by Tyco,
and all interest was billed to the corporation. It became apparent on January
The Cask Of Amontillado Chapter 1 Analysis Essay
4+1 Analysis: The Fall of the House of Usher The tone of the beginning of the
story was foreboding and gloomy. When the narrator arrives at the House of
Usher, he uses the word melancholy to describe the feeling of the house and says
it has a sense of insufferable gloom (pg. 69). The house was falling apart, and it
appeared as if Roderick Usher was too. He wrote to the narrator, explaining that his
sister will die soon. This foreshadowing adds to the apprehensive tone. Poe includes
many details that contribute to the ominous tone in the beginning. One important
attribute of Roderick Usher is that he is a twin. When he found Madeline dead, this
had a huge toll on his mental state and even his physical appearance. The
luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. (pg. 84) Some twins are known to have
a sort of telepathic connection, so... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Montesor sounds like monster, while Fortunado sounds like fortune. Montesor, the
mastermind behind this revengeful tale, was truly a monster. He murdered a man
by burying him alive, just because he insulted him. Even though Fortunado s name
sounds like fortune, he definitely wasn t fortunate in this story. Once Montesor
had fettered him to the granite, (pg. 101) Fortunado realized he was destined to
die, which does not suit his ironic name. Poe is very sarcastic when choosing his
characters names. Fortunado is a very oblivious character in this story. He is a
jester which shows he can be quite foolish. It seems as if he is very clueless to the
fact that he s being lead to his death until towards the end of the story. When
Montresor offers him wine he says, And I to your long life, (pg. 99) which is very
ironic; it s like he s mocking Fortunado. He had many chances to escape, yet he
persisted on staying with Montresor. He s an imbecile, and some could say that he

American Middle Eastern Minority
American Middle Eastern Minority
One of the least known minority groups in the United States is the Middle Eastern
minority. Although the place of Middle Easterners became the forefront of public
discussions recently, especially with relation to Islam and terrorism after 9/11,
Middle Easterners in the United States have a long history. They have become part of
the American society, and many second and third generation Americans with Middle
Eastern background have become publicly recognizable figures, working in the
business, political, entertainment, and media sectors as well as the U.S. military.
Among these figures are General John Abizaid, Apple Inc. co founder Steve Jobs,
actress Shannon Elizabeth, Miss USA Pageant Rima Fakih, and political and social
activist Ralph Nader.
Majority of Middle Eastern Americans are of Arab descent although there is a
sizable population of Iranian Americans. It is estimated that at least 1.7 Americans
are of Arab descent and over 300,000 Americans are of Iranian descent. Iranian
Americans are largely concentrated in the states of California, Texas, and
Washington D.C., while Arab Americans live in all 50 states. One third of all Arab
Americans live in California, New York, and Michigan. Overwhelming majority of
Arab Americans (94%) live in metropolitan areas of New York/NJ, Los Angeles,
Chicago, Detroit, and Washington, D.C. The largest group among Arab Americans is

The Concept of Protesting with Non-Violence
The concept of Protesting with Non Violence is to bring some shame to your
oppressor so they can realize the wrong they are doing without violence. Without
violence there is no urge for retaliation only acceptance of friendship. Some felt that
this was a cowardice way to protest, and had to be taught those who resisted it
without fully understanding it. They taught that this method is nonaggressive
physically but strongly aggressive spiritually. It is not meant to humiliate or
challenge the whites, but to win over their friendship, and respect as human beings.
This was a movement awaken the philosophy of love. With this method of
boycotting it involves not only avoiding external aggression, but also internal
aggression on the spirit. To love and accept others who have wronged you, you must
first love yourself. Martian Luther believed that believing in nonviolence means you
believe the universe recognizes injustices and through freewill comically fixes them.
The sit ins were another important part of the movement. The one that started it all
was in North Carolina in Greensboro. These sit ins were very successful they were
the spark that started desegregation. Four college student went into Woolworth for
lunch, and were refused service. So they refused to leave. This act got African
American talking why didn t they stand up and say enough is enough? It was then
they realized segregation only exists because they allowed it to. They had verbally

Who Is Sethe s Identity In Beloved
The character of Beloved is the physical symbol of Sethe s baby, Sethe s past, the
traumas of slavery, and the cost of freedom. Morrison uses Beloved the book, as a
whole, and the character to claim the story of the slave. Margaret Garner, the
inspiration for Sethe s character, was a sensation in the 1850s by both abolitionists
and pro slavery supporters. They used her story but not her voice to promote their
agenda either for or against slavery. Morrison, a black female fiction writer, 100
years later once again uses Garner s story but adds a voice to it in order to rip the
veil drawn over proceedings too terrible to relate. In this style memory weighs
heavily in what I write, and how I begin and in what I find to be significant. Through

Sethe embeds her identity into her motherhood. But the part of identity that she
struggles with is her identity as a mother who killed her child to save her from
slavery. Until this moment the reincarnation of Beloved haunted Sethe.
Morrison articulates an important distinction between how Paul D previously
lived and how Sethe currently lives. In contrast to Paul D, Sethe lives within her
memories. When Paul D finds Sethe she says him, I made the ink, Paul D. He
couldn t have done it if I hadn t made the ink. Sethe is talking about Schoolteacher

The Basics of Cognitive Theory in Relation to the...

Explain the basics of cognitive theory in relation to the development of abnormal
behavior. Use Aaron T. Beck and Albert Ellis as theorists for reference.
If you believe the saying Perception is everything, then you may well be a cognitivist.
According to the cognitive perspective, people engage in abnormal behavior because
of particular thoughts and behaviors that are often based upon their false assumptions.
Cognitives believe that without these thought processes, we could have no emotions
and no behavior and would therefore not function. In other words, thoughts always
come before any feeling and before any action. ... Show more content on

Therapists help patients realize that their own beliefs contribute greatly to, maintain,
and even cause their psychological problems (Stefan, 2011).
Stefan added that this approach leads patients to realize the irrationality and rigidity
of their thinking and encourages them to actively change self defeating beliefs and
behaviors. Ellis initially named the treatment Rational Therapy, the Rational Emotive
therapy, and finally Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy to stress the interrelated
importance of cognition, behavior, and emotion.
Like all theories, the cognitive perspective is not free from criticism. First,
behaviorists see this theory as weak due to the abstract nature of thoughts and the
difficulty in defining them. What may be seen as self critical by one researcher may
look like a rational remark by another.
Second, there is no agreed upon definition or application of the theory. It is seen as
fairly new and while it receives a great deal of research, the underlying theory of
personality development is weak at best. So while it may have very positive outcomes
in treatment, it does not provide a solid understanding of development. For the neo
Freudian, this might mean that cognitive therapy is only a temporary approach and
does not address the real reason behind a personality issue. [ (Christopher, 2004) ]
As you read, the basic premise behind cognitive theory is the idea that the way we
think about or perceive ourselves and others, determines how

Why Harry Truman Dropped the Bomb on Hiroshima, and

On August 6th 1945, the United States, led by Harry Truman, decided to drop the
atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, forever changing warfare. This paper will be
dedicated to why Harry Truman decided to use the atomic bomb on Japan and the
effects that this decision had on humanity afterward. The creation of the atomic
bomb, and subsequently the Manhattan Project, was created in response to the belief
that the German Government was in the process of creating atomic weapons. This
belief was expressed to President Roosevelt in a letter written to him by Albert
Einstein, who introduce Roosevelt to the ability of atomic weapons and shared with
him that the German Government had stop selling the crucial ingredient of uranium

This attitude was only compounded when United States Government were
informed of the treatment of American prisoners of war after the Battle of Bataan
in the Philippines, which resulted in the Bataan Death March in April 1942. The
Bataan Death March was a 65 mile march in which American and Filipino
prisoners of war were gathered into groups of 100 and forced to march North
towards Camp O Donnell. The prisoners were given little food or water during the
march, which led to starvation and extreme fatigue for many of the soldiers. On
occasion, soldiers would break formation to try and drink stagnant water of the
sides of the road, after having their canteens emptied by the Japanese. These
actions resulted in being bayoneted or shot. Other actions by the Japanese were
dragging prisoners behind trucks, making the prisoners sit in the sun for hours
without shade, and random executions . This brutal treatment of these prisoners
resulted in over 5,000 deaths and has been labeled as one of the worst atrocities in
modern wartime history. These events led the United States to have an attitude of
revenge for the rest of the war, which played a factor in the decision to use the
atomic bomb on Japan, which Truman made evident by stating, The Japanese began
the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold. Revenge was
only part of the equation for the decision to use atomic weapons in
Research Essay on Southeast Asia
IH202: Southeast Asia: The Rice that Binds? Research Essay (10%) The definition
of the phrase Settlement pattern is associated with the understanding of how a
particular society used the available resources in its region. The phrase can also be
described as the actual land upon which a settlement is built. So what exactly is the
pattern of settlements in Southeast Asia? Some say that the pattern of human
settlement in Southeast Asia is dispersed settlements where buildings are spread
out; an example would be the rural areas of Philippines, where different villages are
at different parts of the country. Others say that it s more like linear settlements that

This not only makes similar settlers more comfortable to fit in but it also makes the
community more bonded. Climate also affects settlement patterns in numerous
ways. Colder countries tend to have lesser population than warmer countries. For
example, Alaska has the smallest population in the United States. Extreme climate
conditions may play a role too, Sometimes it is even impossible to inhabit that
area, due to the weather conditions. A land s geographical location can determine
whether an area has higher risk of experiencing an earthquake or not. Singapore is
considered very blessed as her geographical location is very well shielded by other
larger countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. Furthermore, we do not sit on the
earthquake belt. However Japan and Indonesia are less fortunate, as they are located
right on the earthquake belt and are constantly experiencing earthquake every now
and then. If your settlement is located nearby to a river, there will be a reliable
source of food and transportation which adds to the land s desirability. Some people
are drawn to coastal areas as these areas offer a number of recreational activities, such
as surfing or wakeboarding and access to water transportation. Maybe they also
appreciate the value of waterfront property. In this essay, I have come to the
conclusion that Southeast Asia has more than one pattern of settlements. Instead, it
has three, namely, the dispersal settlement, the linear settlement and the nucleated

real art it should contain at least 5 certain characteristics. Alberto Burri s Rosso

uniqueness, reaction, and inherent meaning. With all of this, he makes a beautiful

Ideas of Rulers in Tao-te Ching and The Prince Essay
When comparing Tao te Ching to The Prince there are numerous differences. The
authors of these two documents had almost completely opposite ideas of how a ruler
should behave and how a government should be run. One believed that the ruler
could accomplish the most by doing the least; the other believed that by controlling
how the public perceived a rulerwas what would make him a success or a failure.
Machiavelli believed that to rule the princemust do things that would win approval
with his people, and that the prince must always keep and maintain arms to remain in
power. On the other hand Lao tzu believed that the master ruled with as little
involvement as possible, he believed that to not do would have the greatest effect, and

Throughout The Prince are guide lines for a ruler to follow concerning matters of
how he is going to be viewed by the people. Machiavelli says that a prince should
take care to not be too generous or too cruel as either could have a negative effect
on his reputation. While these two ideas might seem to have little relevance to one
another it is just an example of how Lao tzu s and Machiavelli s ideas about how
important the rulers public persona was to their ability to rule successfully.
Finally one major difference is that Machiavelli believes that the ruler should always
keep arms and be ready to fight off a threat. Lao tzu has the idea that the only need to
keep arms is for a last resort when all other options have been exhausted. This is an
enormous difference; The Prince gives the idea that by not maintaining a military
and a willingness to fight the ruler may be over thrown by either another country
or by his own people. Lao tzu gives the idea that if you rule properly you will not
need the weapon except in the most extreme circumstances. He also gives the idea
that if a ruler tries to rule by force another force opposing the ruler will come to him.
Both of these authors have good ideas on how to rule properly and have the greatest
influence on their people. While neither one of the ideas is wrong nor right they are
both good proposals for any one not just a prince or a master, but anyone who finds
Hans Use Of Political And Social Themes
Hans Haacke has been characterized as among some of the most revolutionary and
controversial contemporary and conceptual artists of all time. Haacke s works are
generally simply constructed yet exquisitely permeated with depth and importance
through his integration of social, political, and environmental issues in his pieces that
give them a voice they would otherwise lack. In the following essay, we will seek to
understand just how Hans Haackes use of political and social themes causes his
work to resonate with audiences on the scale it has done. When gazing upon the
vast expanse of art history, it becomes evident that the greatest and most
influentially revolutionary individuals are not those that dabble in the popular and
well studied styles of old. Those who are great flee from average and explore
uncharted new territories. The individuals that choose to really set themselves apart
from the rest of art culture are those who branch out in totally new directions. Those
who delve into new ideas and new ways of expressing themselves through mediums
and styles few have trodden upon. Hans Haacke has cemented himself in history as
one of these influential and revolutionary individuals. His pioneering work of a
conceptual nature was unparalleled and unmatched by his competitors at its
conception. Hans Haacke was born August 12, 1936 in the little town of Cologne,
Germany. Before he started formal education, he was part of an global organization

Red Bull- Consumer Behavior
RedBull
While working on this report, we tried to figure out the best way to go about
completing a consumer analysis for Redbull. Initially, we were confused as to what to
tackle first: the marketing strategy or the consumer profile? We figured that both the
marketing and the communication strategy of Redbull in Pakistan were based on or
rather for a very specific type of consumer. So our first task (in order to understand
this consumer type, as well as the dynamics of Redbull s marketing strategy) was to
review the nature of the product, and establish a consumer profile for it.

Now that we have established the consumer profile for the average consumer of
Redbull and highlighted the nature of the product itself, we will proceed by
delineating these factors relationship to the marketing strategy of Redbull. Redbull
is priced at Rs.100 per can in the market. It officially grants the retailer an incentive
of Rs.10 per can, even though smaller retailers charge Rs.110 (driving their profit
to Rs.20 per can). Considering the fact that it is a relatively expensive beverage, it
is placed in medium to large sized shopping malls. Large shopping malls are also
provided with little refrigerators in the shape of a Redbull can (see appendix 1 for
picture) by the company for advertisement purposes.
Armed with the knowledge that the average consumer also smokes cigarettes, the
Redbull company ensures that cans are also sold at major tobacco shops in Lahore
such as Tobacco Masters and Abdul s Tobacco. They can also be found at popular
khokas such as Two Guy Pan Shop in Fortress or Jaidi Pan Shop in Defence.
During our research we found that the correlation between smoking and drinking
Redbull was indeed quite strong as the average tobacco shop sold about 48 cans per
day, while the average grocery store sold about 8 9 cans per day (not taking into
account large shopping malls).
Redbull is also placed at shops within colleges and some schools. It can

Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding by David Hume
Essay
David Hume wrote Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding in 1748, right in the
middle of the Enlightenment and on the eve of the Industrial and Scientific
Revolution. So it only makes sense that some of the ideas and comparisons used are
slightly outdated, but science, if anything, helps his argument regarding causality.
Hume is ultimately concerned with the origins of causality, how we are able to
gain knowledge from causality, and if we can even call the knowledge derived from
causality real knowledge. This is essentially the problem of induction, and is a
central pillar of Hume s overall philosophy. There are some significant objections to
Hume s ideas concerning causality, but they do not hold much clout and are no match

Therefore, it can be asserted that knowledge gained from causality is not a priori,
rather a posteriori, which is knowledge gained from experience and empirical
evidence. One objection to Hume s definition of causality was written by a fellow
(omit) named Thomas Reid. His problem with Hume s definition was that it led to
absurd conclusions. The example Reid uses is one of night and day. Reid asserts
that if one follows Hume s definition of cause, then one can postulate that day is the
cause of night, and night is the cause of day, which goes on forever and is circular.
Thus, by Reid s account, the definition of cause is absurd, and cannot hold (sp) any
value. This cannot be further from the truth. Reid s example is severely (sp)

cause of night, nor is night the cause of day. As the Earth rotates on its axis, half of
the Earth is bathed in the Sun s light, while the other half is in darkness. This is
always the case, even as the Earth spins. Thus the Sun is the cause of both day and
night, not day the cause of night and vice versa. Reid s objection now has very little
ground to stand on, and it is made even more apparent when one considers certain
Alaskan towns, which depending on the season, can experience more than 24 hours

The military was founded in 1775 in order to fight Great Britain. The small army was
led by appointed commander George Washington. Ever since its establishment, the
military has continued to increase. The United States currently has about 1.3 million
active troops and an additional 865,000 troops in reserve it is the world s third
largest military. The US also has a large global presence with troops deployed in over
170 countries including South Korea, Italy, Afghanistan, and Japan. The United States
is a militaristic country because of the military budget, the military s expansion into
civilian areas, and military culture. The large and increasing budget of the military is
an example of U.S. militarism. According to National Priorities... Show more content

Civilian control of the military is a government policy, written in the constitution, that
places responsibility of the the head of the Defense Department in the hands of a
civilian political leader rather than a military officer. This doctrine, however, is
coming to an end. According to Document 2, military personnel are required to wait 7
years after retirement to gain a civilian position. President Trump has ignored this
practice by appointing generals and lieutenant generals to cabinet or high ranking
positions. This proves that the United States is a militaristic country because the
military is now moving into positions, that were previously reserved for civilians.
Document 2 also states that the military has expanded its role into areas that were
previously civilian areas. These include counter terrorism, drug trafficking
enforcement, natural disaster aid, immigration control, and policing. This shows that
the US is militaristic because the military is constantly expanding; not only by means
of budget and power, but also responsibility. This is also a negative example of US
militarism because civilian control over the military is important. The American
democracy was built around this
Romeo And Juliet Free Will
Fate has brutal ways of twisting one s destiny and it surely did for both Romeo and
Juliet. William Shakespeare wrote what is now known as the romantic tragedy of
Romeo and Juliet. The play is highly recognized for it s astonishingly composed
writing. Another thing this play provides is the numerous debates that have come up
from this very tragedy. One of the common arguments is between whether this
tragedy was controlled by fate or by free will? For sure we can determine that the
undoing of the two star crossedlovers was in the hands of fate itself this is because
of how critical is was for them to be born into rival families, their meeting was
destined not chosen, and finally how they are always being battered by obstacles
when they try... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the first time they met, they then found out they were meant to be
enemies. Then as the play goes on we see many more examples. The most
prominent one is the events that followed after the Romeo was banished. Juliet is
misunderstood by her father who then thinks the way to cure her tears is to get her
married to Paris. When it comes to bad luck apparently Romeo s banishment isn t
enough cruelty because Juliet is off to be married to Paris. She is to be wed on
Thursday, after panicking Juliet finally receives a clever plan from the Friar but fate
gets in the way. Capulet out of happiness brings the wedding date up one day and
made it wednesday instead. As capulet moves the wedding to Wednesday instead. In
the following quote capulet says: Send for the County. Go tell him of this. I ll have
this knot knit up tomorrow morning. (IV.ii.23 24). This shows that when Juliet
thought she could control her destiny fate puts in it s famous cruel turn. Later as
Romeo doesn t receive the letter including the plan he thinks his love is truly dead.
You can see how fate has got in the way of the letters arrival. In the end, when
Romeo sees dead Juliet he says Thou art not conquered. Beauty s ensign yet is
crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks, and death s pale flag is not advanced there.
(V.iii.94 96). It is almost as if fate is mocking him senseless on how he could ve
have gotten that he wanted but it just was not destined for either of them. Another
point is when Juliet clearly recognizes that this whole plan is up to fate, Right
before she takes the vile Juliet questions whether things will go as planned which
proves how there is really no free will in her hands. She says How if, when I am laid
into the tomb, I wake before the time that Romeo come to redeem me? There s a
fearful point! (IV.iii.31 33) this shows how Juliet is
Structure Of Operation Anaconda
Command Structure
Command structure is the organizational hierarchy through which administrative
leadership or operational authority is exercised (DOD Dictionary of Military and
Associated Terms, 2017). The United States armed forces and other coalition forces
encountered an estimated 1,000 enemy troops and killed hundreds during Operation
Anaconda. However, defeating these enemy forces required commanders and staff
members to scramble to coordinate and rush reinforcements into battle after the
shooting begun. The Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF) Mountain headquarters
failure to establish and maintain tactical control, operational control, or situational
awareness (SA) of special operations forces and other inter agencies led to unity of
command confusion during the execution of Operation Anaconda.
Command Structure before Operation Anaconda
The United States and its allies responded against Al Qaida members and their Taliban
sponsors in Afghanistan after their 11 September 2001 (commonly referred to as 9
/11) attack on New York City and Washington D.C. The initial crisis action planning,
developed with limited intelligence and without a well defined end state, had a
significant impact on the overall mission and the concept of operations in
Afghanistan and the region, specifically U.S. Marine Corps Forces Central
Command (MARCENT) was located in Hawaii and maintained small support staffs
in Tampa and Bahrain. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) did not have a

My Favorite Gift
Do you remember the first time you were truly happy? Filled with joy and hope on
what was to come? The first time I experienced this feeling came on a Christmas
Morning when Santa successfully delivered the one present on my reasonably small
wish list .
It started as a development of socks, shoes, and sweaters, moving to books and a
fashion of corduroy pants my mom seemed to love. As the gifts that I should be
Thankful for came in throughout the years, I took them up to my room, set them
aside and began to pray for something other than a decorative wool cardigan my
grandmother would give me. Not sure if it could be considered an Ugly Sweater, I
always had to accept the as it was; a piece of cloth only to be worn as pajamas inside
my home. As my friends from school would come back with assortments of japanese
erasers, games of mario kart and star wars for the wii and numerous sets of legos, I
decided I was going to take matters into my own hands and ask for an Ipod for next
year.
As the seasons changed, I continued to think about my one and only christmas
wish. An Ipod, but not Just any Ipod, the ipod shuffle. A new development of
technology that would change the world forever. A gift so special I began to look
forward to shocked look on my classmates faces more than the excitement of the
present alone. As christmas had finally arrived, I followed the star of bethlehem that
had lead me down stairs to the presents under the tree. Eyeing a small box, I began to
open

Essay On Environment And Pollution

  • 1. Essay On Environment And Pollution Writing an essay on the topic of "Environment and Pollution" can be a challenging task, considering the vast scope and complexity of the subject matter. This topic encompasses a wide range of issues, from the impact of human activities on the natural environment to the various forms of pollution affecting ecosystems globally. The challenge lies in effectively addressing the multifaceted aspects of environmental issues while maintaining coherence and clarity in the essay. To begin with, researching the latest data and information on environmental concerns is crucial. The dynamic nature of environmental problems, coupled with ongoing scientific discoveries, requires a thorough understanding of current issues. Staying updated on environmental policies, scientific findings, and global initiatives is essential to present a well-informed and relevant essay. Crafting a compelling thesis statement that encapsulates the core message of the essay is another hurdle. The thesis should reflect a clear stance on environmental issues, whether it's advocating for sustainable practices, addressing specific pollution problems, or proposing solutions to global environmental challenges. Organizing the essay structure can be daunting, as the content must flow logically and coherently. The introduction should grab the reader's attention, present the thesis, and outline the main points. The body paragraphs need to delve into specific aspects of the environment and pollution, providing evidence, examples, and arguments to support the thesis. Transitioning smoothly between paragraphs and maintaining a balanced approach to different facets of the topic can be a demanding task. Moreover, addressing counterarguments and opposing viewpoints adds complexity to the writing process. A well-rounded essay on the environment should acknowledge alternative perspectives while effectively refuting or integrating them into the overall argument. The conclusion is equally crucial, summarizing key points, reinforcing the thesis, and leaving a lasting impression on the reader. Striking the right balance between optimism and realism in proposing solutions or calling for action adds another layer of difficulty. In conclusion, writing an essay on the topic of "Environment and Pollution" demands extensive research, a nuanced understanding of the subject matter, and adept organizational and writing skills. However, by navigating these challenges thoughtfully, one can contribute meaningfully to the discourse on environmental issues. For assistance with similar essays or any other writing needs, various resources are available, including online platforms like HelpWriting.net, where expert writers can provide guidance and support in crafting well-researched and articulate essays on diverse topics. • 2. Westward Expansion Dbq From the years 1800 1850 the nation was filled with battles and affluence. Westward Expansion was America s inclination to possess western territories that have yet to be claimed or negotiate claims with other countries. Expansion of the U.S. was a cause for most battles fought during this time; however, our nation was continuing to prosper. Under, the idea of Manifest Destiny which was the belief that the United Stateswas divinely made to expand from coast to coast, the country began to use any means necessary to expand. Among these were battles, purchases from other countries, and treaties. Conflicts during this period included, but not limited to, The Oregon Territory, Louisiana Purchase, and the Mexican American war. I believe Westward expansion was an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many nations such as Spain, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States claimed this territory, but under the Transcontinental Treaty, Spain ceded its claims to the territory to the United States (The Oregon Territory, 1846). It was stated in Source B, Polk was eager to settle the boundary of the Oregon territory and proposed a settlement on the 49 degree line to Great Britain (The Oregon Territory, 1846). Expansion continues when Mexico offers Americans cheap land sold through recruiting agents. In this land many Anglo Americans from the US settled in Mexican Texas. While Polk and Great Britain discussed claims to Oregon, the United States and Mexico were entering war. The Mexican American War was a result of Manifest Destiny and the annexation of Texas in 1845. Texas had been in a border dispute with Mexico at the time of the annexation, leading to the of the U.S. Mexico claims to the border. In 1848, the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican War and added more than 1 million square miles to the United States. The entry of this land led many Americans to ponder on whether slavery would be accepted in new
  • 3. Analysis Of Dante s Inferno Dante s Divine Comedy is a work that has lasted many generations, and has greatly contributed to even our own visualization of the afterlife. It is separated into three parts with the most striking section of the work being the Inferno. In Inferno, the character Dante travels through hell, and identifies the sins and consequent punishment of those who are damned. However, Infernois not a simple report of an event, but also includes several literary devices that convey grander and more significant themes of sin, punishment, and the afterlife. These devices Dante uses in his work are, but not limited to, symbolism, allegory, allusion, and a special kind of irony called contrapasso, which will be discussed in this essay. Dante also arranges... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, when many similar allusions appear in what seems to be a deliberate order, it becomes noticeable that the author wanted to convey a topic or argument in his or her writing without explicitly saying so. But, why do authors choose to hide their ideas behind recurring symbols and allusions? They usually do this because it is easier for them to demonstrate their beliefs through images and symbols than words. Additionally, creating a text that has multiple layers of meaning also enriches the work, and this is underlined by The Divine Comedy s long standing popularity. (Encyclopedia Britannica) The Divine Comedy is considered to be an allegorical work because there are many proposed theories for allegories throughout the story, and even some that encompass the entire work. Additionally, because of its religious subject matter, many scholars study The Divine Comedy as they would a religious work. For many, this entails interpreting the text in both a literal and figurative sense (Encyclopedia Britannica). One of the most popular and debated events is in Canto IX when the characters Dante and Virgil arrive at the gates to the city of Dis. Beyond the locked gates, in the city, are the remaining circles of Hell the characters need to travel through. However, they are spotted by three furies (some kind of beasts in hell), and are

  • 6. Standardized Test Scores An Accurate Representation Of A... Are standardized test scores an accurate representation of a student s abilities? Standardized tests can be found at any level of a student s academic career, but are they accurate indicators of a student s academic abilities? Standardized tests are used to measure a student s academic abilities, and overall knowledge. In theory, a student s skills can be determined by examining the limited data collected from the test. However, standardized test do not fully represent a student s abilities, and cumulative knowledge. Many factors may affect the validity of the scores, and the accuracy of the assessment. Instructor s teaching directly for the test, being able to guess on multiple choice questions, examining only test scores, and ignoring other academic factors contribute to the biased representation of students academic abilities. Because instructors are teaching directly for the test, the data collected may not be an accurate representation of the student s true abilities. As standardized test grow in popularity among the school system, the pressure to achieve high scores rapidly builds. The importance of high scores goes beyond individual students performances, and teacher evaluations. Serious repercussions could result from poor scores, or performances. For example, schools that continue to fail to improve may be closed, and districts that continue to fail may be subject to state takeover (Posner). With the weight of the success of the school on their shoulders,

Plutonium s Odd State and Missing Magnetism Marc Janoschek (http://www.lanl.gov/discover/news stories archive/2014/November /janoschek wolfram prandl prize.php) of the Los Alamos Lab says that, on the atomic level, each atom of a metal has a set number of electrons that orbit the nucleus that never changes. This set number of electrons is referred to as the metal in its ground state . The neutrons and electrons both have a magnetic field that creates an opportunity for the atom to be aligned in another magnetic field. However, when plutonium s ground state was first measured, it was found that its ground state could consist of four, five, or six electrons. There was no constant amount of electrons in its unaltered, fixed ground state. Plutonium fluctuates between three different ground states while also simultaneously being in all three states at the same time. The basis for this theory was first imagined at Rutgers University in 2007, but thanks to Janoschek and his team, it has been proven correct. The reason to plutonium s missing magnetism has been

The work was first performed in Meiningen, Germany in October 1885 and was an instant success because of its masterful composition and unique style. Brahms s music and his fourth symphony are often viewed as a bridge between the music of the baroque and romantic era. Although Brahms is considered to be a romantic composer, his musicis unique from others because you can hear both the style of older era composers and features of romantic style in the texture of his works. This combination of baroque and romantic style in his music helps create more balance in the music, which gives it a blend that captured audiences and still entrances them today. Brahms was also inspired by study of Beethoven s symphonies for their orchestral color and harmonic structure; Brahms incorporates these features he enjoyed into his writing. The fourth movement of Brahms symphony No. 4 is titled Allegro energico e passianato and is known for its use of the Baroque style of Chaconne and other features that are found in the Romantic style as well. The Themes Of Death And Death Cambridge Hinds Big Question Paper The Meaning of Death The themes of life and death are used frequently throughout many ancient and modern stories, and specifically, thoughts on death and what it means differ from author to author, time period to time period, and circumstance to circumstance. Many works of ancient literature address the meaning of death directly; examples include the drama Medea by ancient Greek playwright Euripides in 431 BCE, and the Decameron by Italian Giovanni Boccaccio in around 1353. As well as being popular themes in ancient literature, however, death is used for significant meaning in modern novels, movies, TV shows, and other forms of storytelling and entertainment. A good example of this is the movie The Book of Life, directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez. Dictionary.com defines death as: ...the total and permanent cessation of all the vital functions of an organism. In many religions, death is a transition from this world to another, whether it be for better or worse. In our modern western society, death has many different views; it can be a bittersweet occasion as well as a tragic one, depending on circumstances. As seen in Medea, the Decameron, and The Book of Life, death always means an end to life, and an ultimate severance from the living. However, these texts provide very different views of death, as well. Respectively, it means tragic revenge, a feared end, and reconciliation as well as separation. • 27. The Concept of Protesting with Non-Violence The concept of Protesting with Non Violence is to bring some shame to your oppressor so they can realize the wrong they are doing without violence. Without violence there is no urge for retaliation only acceptance of friendship. Some felt that this was a cowardice way to protest, and had to be taught those who resisted it without fully understanding it. They taught that this method is nonaggressive physically but strongly aggressive spiritually. It is not meant to humiliate or challenge the whites, but to win over their friendship, and respect as human beings. This was a movement awaken the philosophy of love. With this method of boycotting it involves not only avoiding external aggression, but also internal aggression on the spirit. To love and accept others who have wronged you, you must first love yourself. Martian Luther believed that believing in nonviolence means you believe the universe recognizes injustices and through freewill comically fixes them. The sit ins were another important part of the movement. The one that started it all was in North Carolina in Greensboro. These sit ins were very successful they were the spark that started desegregation. Four college student went into Woolworth for lunch, and were refused service. So they refused to leave. Morrison uses Beloved the book, as a whole, and the character to claim the story of the slave. Margaret Garner, the inspiration for Sethe s character, was a sensation in the 1850s by both abolitionists and pro slavery supporters. They used her story but not her voice to promote their agenda either for or against slavery. Morrison, a black female fiction writer, 100 years later once again uses Garner s story but adds a voice to it in order to rip the veil drawn over proceedings too terrible to relate. In contrast to Paul D, Sethe lives within her memories. When Paul D finds Sethe she says him, I made the ink, Paul D. He couldn t have done it if I hadn t made the ink. Explain the basics of cognitive theory in relation to the development of abnormal behavior. Use Aaron T. Beck and Albert Ellis as theorists for reference. If you believe the saying Perception is everything, then you may well be a cognitivist. According to the cognitive perspective, people engage in abnormal behavior because of particular thoughts and behaviors that are often based upon their false assumptions. Cognitives believe that without these thought processes, we could have no emotions and no behavior and would therefore not function. In other words, thoughts always come before any feeling and before any action. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therapists help patients realize that their own beliefs contribute greatly to, maintain, and even cause their psychological problems (Stefan, 2011). Stefan added that this approach leads patients to realize the irrationality and rigidity of their thinking and encourages them to actively change self defeating beliefs and behaviors. Ellis initially named the treatment Rational Therapy, the Rational Emotive therapy, and finally Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy to stress the interrelated importance of cognition, behavior, and emotion. Like all theories, the cognitive perspective is not free from criticism. First, behaviorists see this theory as weak due to the abstract nature of thoughts and the difficulty in defining them. What may be seen as self critical by one researcher may look like a rational remark by another. Second, there is no agreed upon definition or application of the theory. It is seen as fairly new and while it receives a great deal of research, the underlying theory of personality development is weak at best. So while it may have very positive outcomes in treatment, it does not provide a solid understanding of development. For the neo Freudian, this might mean that cognitive therapy is only a temporary approach and does not address the real reason behind a personality issue. [ (Christopher, 2004) ] As you read, the basic premise behind cognitive theory is the idea that the way we think about or perceive ourselves and others, determines how

On August 6th 1945, the United States, led by Harry Truman, decided to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, forever changing warfare. This paper will be dedicated to why Harry Truman decided to use the atomic bomb on Japan and the effects that this decision had on humanity afterward. The creation of the atomic bomb, and subsequently the Manhattan Project, was created in response to the belief that the German Government was in the process of creating atomic weapons. This belief was expressed to President Roosevelt in a letter written to him by Albert Einstein, who introduce Roosevelt to the ability of atomic weapons and shared with him that the German Government had stop selling the crucial ingredient of uranium from their recently... This attitude was only compounded when United States Government were informed of the treatment of American prisoners of war after the Battle of Bataan in the Philippines, which resulted in the Bataan Death March in April 1942. The Bataan Death March was a 65 mile march in which American and Filipino prisoners of war were gathered into groups of 100 and forced to march North towards Camp O Donnell. The prisoners were given little food or water during the march, which led to starvation and extreme fatigue for many of the soldiers. On occasion, soldiers would break formation to try and drink stagnant water of the sides of the road, after having their canteens emptied by the Japanese. These actions resulted in being bayoneted or shot. Other actions by the Japanese were dragging prisoners behind trucks, making the prisoners sit in the sun for hours without shade, and random executions . This brutal treatment of these prisoners resulted in over 5,000 deaths and has been labeled as one of the worst atrocities in modern wartime history. These events led the United States to have an attitude of revenge for the rest of the war, which played a factor in the decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan, which Truman made evident by stating, The Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold. Revenge was only part of the equation for the decision to use atomic weapons in

Research Essay (10%) The definition of the phrase Settlement pattern is associated with the understanding of how a particular society used the available resources in its region. The phrase can also be described as the actual land upon which a settlement is built. So what exactly is the pattern of settlements in Southeast Asia? Some say that the pattern of human settlement in Southeast Asia is dispersed settlements where buildings are spread out; an example would be the rural areas of Philippines, where different villages are at different parts of the country. Others say that it s more like linear settlements that grow in a line, often alongside roads, river valleys or the coast, for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This not only makes similar settlers more comfortable to fit in but it also makes the community more bonded. Climate also affects settlement patterns in numerous ways. Colder countries tend to have lesser population than warmer countries. For example, Alaska has the smallest population in the United States. Extreme climate conditions may play a role too, Sometimes it is even impossible to inhabit that area, due to the weather conditions. A land s geographical location can determine whether an area has higher risk of experiencing an earthquake or not. Singapore is considered very blessed as her geographical location is very well shielded by other larger countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. Furthermore, we do not sit on the earthquake belt. However Japan and Indonesia are less fortunate, as they are located right on the earthquake belt and are constantly experiencing earthquake every now and then. If your settlement is located nearby to a river, there will be a reliable source of food and transportation which adds to the land s desirability. Some people are drawn to coastal areas as these areas offer a number of recreational activities, such as surfing or wakeboarding and access to water transportation. Maybe they also appreciate the value of waterfront property. In this essay, I have come to the conclusion that Southeast Asia has more than one pattern of settlements. Instead, it has three, namely, the dispersal settlement, the linear settlement and the nucleated

Machiavelli believed that to rule the princemust do things that would win approval with his people, and that the prince must always keep and maintain arms to remain in power. Finally one major difference is that Machiavelli believes that the ruler should always keep arms and be ready to fight off a threat. Lao tzu has the idea that the only need to keep arms is for a last resort when all other options have been exhausted. This is an enormous difference; The Prince gives the idea that by not maintaining a military and a willingness to fight the ruler may be over thrown by either another country or by his own people. Lao tzu gives the idea that if you rule properly you will not need the weapon except in the most extreme circumstances. He also gives the idea that if a ruler tries to rule by force another force opposing the ruler will come to him. Both of these authors have good ideas on how to rule properly and have the greatest influence on their people. While neither one of the ideas is wrong nor right they are both good proposals for any one not just a prince or a master, but anyone who finds

In the following essay, we will seek to understand just how Hans Haackes use of political and social themes causes his work to resonate with audiences on the scale it has done. The example Reid uses is one of night and day. Reid asserts that if one follows Hume s definition of cause, then one can postulate that day is the cause of night, and night is the cause of day, which goes on forever and is circular. The most prominent one is the events that followed after the Romeo was banished. Juliet is misunderstood by her father who then thinks the way to cure her tears is to get her married to Paris. When it comes to bad luck apparently Romeo s banishment isn t enough cruelty because Juliet is off to be married to Paris. She is to be wed on Thursday, after panicking Juliet finally receives a clever plan from the Friar but fate gets in the way. Capulet out of happiness brings the wedding date up one day and made it wednesday instead. As capulet moves the wedding to Wednesday instead. In the following quote capulet says: Send for the County. Go tell him of this. I ll have this knot knit up tomorrow morning. (IV.ii.23 24). This shows that when Juliet thought she could control her destiny fate puts in it s famous cruel turn. Later as Romeo doesn t receive the letter including the plan he thinks his love is truly dead. You can see how fate has got in the way of the letters arrival. In the end, when Romeo sees dead Juliet he says Thou art not conquered. Beauty s ensign yet is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks, and death s pale flag is not advanced there. (V.iii.94 96). It is almost as if fate is mocking him senseless on how he could ve have gotten that he wanted but it just was not destined for either of them. Another point is when Juliet clearly recognizes that this whole plan is up to fate, Right before she takes the vile Juliet questions whether things will go as planned which proves how there is really no free will in her hands. She says How if, when I am laid into the tomb, I wake before the time that Romeo come to redeem me? There s a fearful point! (IV.iii.31 33) this shows how Juliet is
