Teaching Models Of Learning
Introduction
Teaching models as proposed by Joyce and Weil (1972) are actually models of
learning. These proposed models helps the students to gain knowledge, skills, ideas,
values and ways of thinking through the way they learn. The focus of applying these
models in the teaching and learning process remains on teaching students how to
learn. The most valued feature of teaching models is the connection of the learning
material to the real life context which in turn supports the students to apply the
knowledge and skills they have learned effectively in their future endeavors. The
purpose of this assignment is to develop a practical and theoretical understanding of
different teaching models and how to integrate the models in the teaching and
learning process. Hence, through this assignment selected teaching models will be
explored and presented in detail a long with different ways of integrating them in the
learning practices. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A teaching model is not just a plan or a set of ideas but also it comes with guidelines
for designing education activities, as well as certain teaching and learning that are
intended to achieve goals and outcomes. In order to achieve these goals and
outcomes four different types of teaching models can be utilized in the classroom
context along with various sub models that comes under each of these model. The
four major models proposed are social, personal, behaviour, and information
processing model. Each of these model caters for a particular developmental area of
the student which leads to overall progress of the
Olive Kitteridge Essay
Olive Kitteridge
Olive Kitteridge is a character in a collection of Elizabeth Strout s stories. Through
the collection, Olive is passing from middle age, and is well into her old age. Over
this time, she ekes out a living as a seventh grade instructor, taking on math
classes. Later, she retires and comes to be a wife and a mother. She then takes care
of her husband Henry, who agonizes a stroke, and finally a widow who is starting
over (Renshaw, 2015, par.1). She appears as a main characterin some stories and as a
supporting character in others. Olive s different roles make the book interesting.
These roles range from those of lust, crime, affairs and heartbreak. These roles
revolve around the stern life of Olive and her husband. Most of the stories are set in
and around a small town known as Maine. This essay will analyze the setting, which
is common in most stories (par.2).
Setting is important in Olive Kitteridge stories for a number of reasons. First, the
characters are from the small coastal town, Maine. They are used to the life of this
town and know every corner. They never appreciate much change in their daily
routine. The town has only one church, a grocery and the grocery store. This is well
described in the Basket of Trips (Nussbaum, 2014, par.2).There... Show more content

This clearly shows that the setting of the stories is densely populated. However,
Olive goes back to Maine where population is less populated. The lives of the
characters and their profession revolve around this town. Olive teaches in a school
and her husband is a pharmacist. Their professions enables them know everyone in
the town. However, no one knows their secrets and goes to an extent of hiding them
from each other. Although there are no major characters who are farmers in the town,
the mention of the grocery store is evidence that the town is

Can You Live Up to Your Own Standards?

But as the semester went on, I started feeling lost. I thought I knew what the teacher
was saying. I participated in the class and took notes, but I began to feel numb. I
did not know what I was doing. I had lost my confidence and the thought haunted
me. The first draft deadline came and went. I freaked out because I thought I
would lose points for not turning in my first draft in on time. I frantically emailed
my professor because he never really mentioned deadlines in class and I was
worried that I had missed something. He emailed back: Do not worry about the
essay being late. There s no grade penalty. On Blackboard, all first draft deadlines
are listed on the Class Schedule. The assignments themselves also have the
deadlines listed. I checked the deadlines online and I was so relieved. I only had to
turn in the final essays at the end of the semester. This was perfect for me because
by the end of the semester I felt I would be ready to sit down and write the essays.
As time went by, I tried sitting down a couple times to start my essays. There were
four due, I knew that I did not want to be a week out from turning them in and be
panicking to finish them. As I stared at my computer screen, I just could not find
the right words. Everything seemed wrong. I felt I had no idea what I was supposed
to be doing and I just could not handle not doing the assignment right the first time. I
knew I had time, so I avoided doing them. If I could not sit down
Dog Collar Differences
For the most part, dog collars are pretty simple. Grab one at the store, wrap it around
the dog s neck, and call it good! As it happens, though, there are actually several
distinct types of dog collars, made for various purposes. Let s have a look at how
each one is used.
Most dogs wear the traditional collar: a nylon or leather strap around the neck. This
suffices for most purposes.
Less convenient, but better for the dog s health, is a harness; this holds the dog s
entire upper body rather than his neck. As a result, it avoids putting pressure on his
throat and trachea when he pulls on the leash, and avoids hurting his back if he jerks
suddenly. It can also make the dog much easier to keep a hold of!

The Moral And Philosophical Values Of China
The Analects of Confucius, were written around 500 BC and are most commonly
attributed to late great Confucius. However, the text was written by his disciples,
around thirty year following his passing.
The Analects have greatly influenced the moral and philosophical values of China
and arguably around the world have been influenced by the moral and philosophical
values of the Analects. The passage has remained a fundamental course of study for
any Chinese scholar for approximately two thousand years. During the Sui Dynasty, a
candidate s ability to apply Confucian philosophy and logic was crucial. So much so,
that there was even an examination.
The first book seems to be more of introduction to Confucius and his disciples, as
well as, a glimpse of the many virtues and personal characteristics one must possess
and how one must behave The Master said: As a younger brother and son, be filial
at home and deferential in the community be cautious I what you say and then
make good on your word; love the multitude broadly and be intimate with those
who are authoritative in their conduct. If in so behaving you still have energy left,
use it to imprve yourself through study ( page 72 section 16). The second book
focuses governance, as it is stated at the very beginning of book II The master said:
Governing with excellence can be compared to being the North Star: The North Star
dwells in its place, and the multitude of stars pay it tribute (page 7 section 2.)

Band Of Brothers Analysis Essay
Band of Brothers Biographical/Historical Event Analysis
Stephen E. Ambrose s book Band of Brothers was an historical account of the U.S
Army s 506th Regiment, Easy Company. The book focuses on Easy Company, an
airborne infantry unit in the 101st Airborne Division from training camp all the way
through the European Theater of WWII. The content of book was heavily based off
interviews that Ambrose has conducted on each Easy Company man to ensure that
the reading experience is authentic as possible and that the emotions being conveyed
is hard hitting. Now moving onto the biographical portion of this paper.
Since Band of Brothers covers all the way from Mid 1942 to Mid 1945 the coverage
of this portion will be sectioned by the notable achievements that Easy Company
achieved under its handful of Company Commanders. Starting off with the first one,
Lieutenant Herbet Sobel was the Company Commander for Easy Company from
training camp to just before the jump on Normandy. Lieutenant Sobel was
universally hated by the majority of the enlisted men serving under him, including
his junior officers having a great dislike for him also. The reason for this hatred was
the harsh and intense training sessions that the company underwent on a regular
basis. Usually three to four times a week the men would have to run up and down a
local hill named Currahee that was around a six mile round trip, they would do this
run, rain or shine and commonly used as punishment for petty infractions. One
Kate Brownell s Five Years Of Fostering
Who would be willing to raise more children after already raising eight of their
own children? Who would want to volunteer after long days working as a nurse?
Kate Brownell worked as a nurse, did extensive volunteer work, and raised 8 kids
before becoming a foster mother. Brownell has touched and improved many lives and
is a true hero.
In Brownell s five years of fostering she has helped many people. When asked why
she wanted to start fostering she told me, I wanted to be a service to children who
needed to be cared for and give them hope. Brownell raised her own family and then
decided to start the fostering process. She fostered around 6 kids in her five years
and faced many challenges. In the words of the Common Questions, if a person can
nurture and love a child without receiving anything back, foster parenting might be
something they want to look into. Even when the foster children were not always
pleasant, sometimes even calling her names Brownell would continue to care for
them and treat them with kindness. To Brownell all the hardships she faced were

Rebirth in Sylvia Plath s Lady Lazarus, Fever 103,...
Rebirth in Lady Lazarus, Fever 103, Getting There, and Cut
The Ariel period poems of Sylvia Plath demonstrate her desire for rebirth, to escape
the body that was drummed into use by men and society. I will illustrate the different
types of rebirth with examples from the Ariel poems, including Lady Lazarus, Fever
103, Getting There, and Cut.
Lady Lazarus, the last of the October poems, presents Plath as the victim with her
aggression turned towards her male victimizer (33). Lady Lazarus arises from Herr
Doktor s ovens as a new being, her own incarnation, the victim taking on the powers
of the victimizers and drumming herself into uses that are her own (33). Linda
Bundtzen also sees the poem as an allegory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

During the multiple orgasms of Fever 103, the delirious woman sublimates a body
sick with desire into an acetylene virgin flame and thereby rids herself of any need
for men to complete herself sexually; Thus, Plath freed herself from male dependency
(Bundtzen 236).
Two Ariel poems Cut and Getting There do not exhibit a full rebirthbut rather exploit
the female body s victimization to mover towards new self perceptions (Bundtzen
247). In both poems the female body remains passive, acted upon by the mind s
transforming powers (Bundtzen 247). In Cut the amputation of the thumb is a
symbol of female castration; she became a dirty girl, unable to be a pure female
any longer. Plath understands her self amputation as an acting out of her self hatred
as a woman, she is deficient by virtue of her female wound (Bundtzen 247 248). The
speaker is cut while doing her duty and she unconsciously tries to stop it by cutting
off her finger.
In Getting There, the speaker is a Jew in a box car on her way to a concentration
camp. She identifies with all the wounded and dead: The tent of unending cries
(Plath 248). What gives the speaker this solemn sympathy with the casualties of war
is her female body. She knows these atrocities as a part of her very being, her genesis
(Bundtzen 249):
There is mud on my feet
Thick, red and slipping. It is Adam s side,

Public Opinion And Policy Implications Of Television
Television remains a very important standard regarding how the community view the
criminal justice system. Most residents have very little contact with the criminal
justice system, usually limited to contacts with police. Only an estimated 21 % of
citizens have contact with police officers in a year, and 40 % of those contacts are
merely traffic stops (Bureau of Justice
Statistics, 2002). Most people get their information and perceptions about crime and
the criminal justice system through various media outlets. Those who rely on the
media, however, do not always receive an accurate view of reality. Media depictions,
whether accurate or not, have very important public opinion and policy implications.
One prime example of how the media can have powerful influences on public
opinion was the focus on school violence in the past decade. The school shootings in
the 1990s caused a panic among many parents who had children in school at that
time. As portrayed by the media, school violence and shootings were on the rise, and
something had to be done. As a result of the public outcry, Congress held hearings on
the problem, and school budgets were strained in order to get such enhancements as
metal detectors and school cameras. The media attention given to school shootings
seemed to result in a widespread panic, where actual statistics and logical assessments
of the threat were replaced by emotionally charged reactions to these isolated
incidents (Burns Crawford, 1999). In actuality,
`` A Cyborg Manifesto `` By Donna Haraway
We invented machines to fulfill our necessities. As machines get smarter in the
21th century, we give machines more permissions and freedom to do more things
for us. However, the new generations that are born with all the advanced
technologies they needed don t quite understanding the use of machines as we are
more relying on them. The machines are quickly expanding and replacing our
brains and bodies even it is a simple task to do. But if we step back a little and think
that we are the inventors of these modern machines. Are we scare of machines taking
over our societies or is it just our fear and curiosity that tricked us? Well, we now
cannot live without machines. Human and machine are bonded together tightly that
we can t identify who we really are. We become cyborgwhich is a more accurate term
to describe who we are now.
The reading A Cyborg Manifesto by Donna Harawaypoints out that we are cyborgs.
There is no difference between human and machine and this boundary has been
breached. Cyborgs are a hybrid of machine and organism. They often appear in the
science fiction. Haraway describes that machines are now doing most of our works
while we just sit back and watch them doing what they suppose to do. It feels like
the machines are becoming alive and we are the one that rarely doing anything.
However, we are still on the top of the hierarchy no matter how machines will
change our lives, we are still on the top of the food chain. But even so, we can t

The Crux Research Paper
The Crux is more commonly known as the Southern Cross, its name being Latin for
cross. Although it was seen by the Ancient Greeks, it was known to be part of the
constellation Centaurus. The stars that make up the cross are: Alpha Crucis, Beta,
Gamma, Delta and Epsilon. Quite a few of the constellation s brighter stars are also
members of the Centaurus / Scorpios association. The reason I chose this
constellation is because of its significance to my country. The Southern Crossis on the
national flag, and I have always wondered about the legends and reasons behind this
constellation.
This constellation was, as mentioned above, part of Centaurus, so there was no
traditional myth about its creation. However, Crux was not separated as a singular
constellation until 1516, by Italian explorer Andreas Corsali. Quite derivatively, the
Southern Cross (Crux) was named for its shape, and the hemisphere that can see it.
The Ancient Greeks once were able to see it, but over time it disappeared over the
horizon, so now the southern hemisphere can see it. ... Show more content on

Life is hard. Everybody comes across a hard time in their lives where they have to

can pay off in the long run. The story, ВґВґThe Marble Champ,ВґВґ by Gary Soto,

Cause And Effect Of Buying A Car
Cause and effects of buying a new car
Vehicles are a part of a person s everyday life these days. You see them everywhere,
no matter if it s a big city, or a little country town. People use cars to travel to all
sorts of places, whether it is a school or work. We push our vehicles to the
maximum so they seem to wear out really fast. It seems like every five to six years
you have to purchase a new one. People have so many causes to by a new car these
days but owning a car also comes with a lot of effects. New cars come with a lot of
benefits like reliability and warranties. The biggest downfall with buying that brand
new car is the car payment and that expensive car insurance. A new car might look
good, and you might get more attention, but you pay for that attention. You must ask
yourself is the cost worth the award?
The biggest thing that come along with a car is the car payment. After purchasing
a car and all the taxes with it you can be in a lot of debt. To pay for the car you must
take out a loan out from your bank for whatever you owe on the car. The bank makes
money of the loan by interest. Interest is a percentage a bank charges you to use
their money. Depending on your credit score depends on how much interest the
bank charges you. When you take out a loan you pay every month towards it until
you pay it off. When you first start paying your car loan off all the money goes to the
interest because the bank wants there money first and then after a few months or even
Benefits And Benefits Of Youth Sport Essay
Being involved with athletics at a young age is typically looked at as being a good
activity that gets children involved and gets them out for their 60 minutes of play a
day. Little do many people know, there are many benefits to youth sport than just a
child s daily exercise. Along with there being many positives and benefits to youth
sport, there are also negatives that can come about. Many of the benefits include
physical, psychological, intellectual, and social benefits. Some of the negatives that
can occur from youth sport are the possibilities of loss of self confidence, frustration,
burnout, and injuries. There are many ways to try and make sure that the youth reap
all of the benefits from sport at a youngage and there are certain elements that
coaches, parents, and teachers should take to maximize the befits of sport.
It is important for children to be involved in sport because active participation helps
children develop skills. Research shows that there are many physical benefits to youth
sport. Some of the developments that a child can make from participation in sport are
agility, coordination, endurance, flexibility, speed, and strength (Taskforce, 2013).
The research from Maximizing the Benefits of Youth Sport says that there are more
specific developments that children develop from sport. The specific developments
include: enhanced functioning and health of cardiorespiratory and muscular systems,
improved flexibility, mobility, and coordination, increased
Tkam Character Analysis
The Chosen, By Chaim Potok is an interesting and thought provoking read, yet the
moral ideas and thought provoking actions of the characters in To Kill a
Mockingbird by Harper Lee, will leave a lasting impact on one s life. Throughout
both novels characters are forced to make important decisions and difficult choices.
The 2nd novelmentioned, To Kill a Mockingbird, stands out among the two due to the
type of moral choices expressed, the way that the book connects the reader with the
characters, and the many well written plottwists and story lines. The Chosen has most
of these attributes as well, yet the author did not express them nearly as well as the
author of the other novel. Both novels are marvelously written and carry important
lessons. The lessons of TKAM were more interesting however, and connected the

Moral choices in TKAM are seemingly more relevant than those of The Chosen
however, playing a larger role and occurring more often in day to day life.
Throughout TKAM the characters are forced to make choices such as, risking their
life for someone else s, helping someone who is despised by the community, and
backing down instead of lashing out. All of these important decisions occur during
today s era and this book gives important insight on how to decide what to do when
faced with said decisions. The Chosen includes many of these decisions as well, yet
the characters are faced with them in a more foreign situation than that of the
characters In TKAM. All of these moral decisions faced by the characters in the novel
would not be nearly as meaningful if the reader were not able to connect with the

My Main Expectation Coming Into $ 115, Law And Justice
My main expectation coming into WRA 115 Law and Justice in the United States
was that I would learn to read and write law related papers. Although my
expectations couldn t have been farther from the truth, it ended up being a good
thing. I expected that significant time would be spent reading law related documents

little early to start learning law related material. For me, when writing, its important
that I m writing about something that I either enjoy or something I m interested in.
My main goal was that I d be able to creatively express myself through telling
interesting stories. This class accomplished that with the freedom that was allotted
to me when it came to choosing what I wanted to write about. In other classes I ve
just been given very specific prompts that don t allow a lot of creativity. Although a
majority of the papers I have written this semester were research oriented, through
this class I was able to write papers relevant to myself. The first paper, the learning
memoir, allowed me to reflect back onto a fond memory that I thoroughly enjoyed
expanding on and that has had a significant impact on my life. This paper was
probably my favorite to write, but it also went very wrong when I incorrectly
submitted the memo. I automatically lost a lot of points on a paper that would have
otherwise done well. I also didn t maintain the papers main focus throughout, and my

exercise with sticky clothes and sweaty bodies. Their focus is usually on what type

should wear to enhance their performance. This company is Lululemon Athletica.
Chip Wilson, founder of Lululemon Atheltica, was an outdoorsy man in the business
of surf, skate, and snowboarding. After taking the opportunity to try a yoga class in
Vancouver, he came to find the experience quite wonderful. One thing he did not find
so wonderful was the discomfort of the cotton clothing on his body after sweating
from exercise. To solve this issue, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Who
knew one man s interest in the technicalities of fabric would lead to a multimillion
dollar, international company that thrives on product development and healthy living
(Lululemon Athletica, 2014).
It all began in Wilson s design studio. He opened a building during 1998 in which he
designed and sold athletic apparel. The shop doubled as a yoga studio, having classes
in the evening to help him afford the rent of the building (Lululemon Athletica, 2014).

Seven Deadly Sins Canterbury Tales Analysis
It would seem that everyone is guilty of at least one of the seven deadly sins in
some shape or form. The Pilgrims of The Canterbury Tales are not strangers to sin,
and questionable motives that may or may not clash with their professions or
individual stereotypes. The Canterbury Tales follows a group of pilgrims set out on a
long journey to the CanterburyCathedral in London. The characters, whom are
supposed to follow certain rules and morals in the poem, can exhibit traits of the
seven deadly sins, transgressions which are fatal to spiritual progress. (Shannon). The
first notable sinis Anger, being defined as becoming angry at someone or something
to the point that one can lose control over their actions and words. The pilgrim who...

The Wife of Bath is the most obvious pilgrim for this particular sin because of the
fact that she has had multiple husbands, and perhaps even more men in her youth.
She had five husbands, all at the church door, apart from other company in youth;
(Chaucer 109).
The fifth sin is Envy, defined as wanting to be someone else because of the
qualities and/or possessions a person has. Instead of honoring the life one has, they
dishonor what they were given by being dissatisfied with it. The Nun can be found
envious by her behavior. She wears makeup, although she shouldn t be concerned
about her physical appearance because she chose a life to help others. She does
this in efforts to get attention from men, when nuns pledge themselves only to
God. Her nose was elegant, her eyes glass gray; Her mouth was very small, but soft,
and red. Her forehead, certainly, was fair of spread, almost a span across the brows, I
own (Chaucer 101).
The sixth sin is Gluttony, described as not being satisfied with what one has, and
wanting more. The Summoner is a great example of the sin Gluttony because he
eats and drinks until he cannot take anymore. He even carries garlic and onions on
his person at all times because he enjoys them so much. Garlic he loved, and onions
too, and leeks, and drinking. Strong wine till all was hazy (Chaucer 113).
The final sin is Pride, which is where

Timeded Writing Reflective Report
My enrollment in school has familiarized me with timed writing before. Through
my progression in the education system my experience with timed writing gave me
practice and made me more comfortable with it. However, there are still areas where
my writing needs improving. Being able to write proficiently in a timed environment
requires a lot more practice than I have had. Nonetheless the WPJ practice
assignment is a means for me to improve the quality of my writing. I will use it to
determine my strengths and weaknesses as a writer along with analyzing the
challenges I faced during the process of the timed writing. Analyzing my timed
writing practice I noticed that I do not deviate from the main topic of my paper. All
three body paragraphs have main points that are related to my thesis. Because of this
my paragraphs stayed on the topic of the prompt and did not shift into other off topic
subjects. Another strength I found was making claims and using evidence to prove
my claims true. I advocate a certain point and then I use evidence from the texts
provided in our WPJ prompt.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I m not writing under time constraints I have a harder time forming ideas, so
my writing process is slowed down. With the constant pressure under time I was
forced to write in a quicker pace and think harder about the topic and texts that
came with the prompt. However, I found this time constraint to be also very
challenging. It shifted my focus away from sentence structure and grammar.
Because of this, I made more spelling errors than usual, and my paper didn t have
the most sound sentence structure. I also had to plan an entire essay in about 10
minutes which was difficult because normally I have a whole week to plan and
write a first draft. Besides the difficulties of timed writing I found the exercise to be
fruitful because it showed me my areas of strength
Costa Rica Poverty
The Republic of Costa Rica is a picturesque country located in Central America,
forming a land bridge between Nicaragua and Panama. Tourists flock to this country
each year, attracted by its lush tropical forests and its colourful fauna. However, Costa
Rica s average tourist may be surprised to learn that poverty is a persistent problem
for this apparently rich and diverse country. Many Costa Ricans (familiarly known as
Ticos) suffer from poor health and complain about bad infrastructure. Although the
tourism industry provides substantial revenue for Costa Rica, the industry also has a
dark side, including the promotion of prostitution and drug abuse, among other
things. When these three factors poor health, bad infrastructure, and tourism... Show

To achieve maximum output at work, and thus earn a decent living, a worker must
be of sound mind and body. This feeling of being in tiptop shape can be
compromised by many things, including food quality, macronutrient intake, and
water quality. Unfortunately, many Ticos do not have access to these benefits
which developed countries take for granted. Ryan E. Galt describes in his book
Food Systems in an Unequal World: Pesticides, Vegetables, and Agrarian Capitalism
in Costa Rica (as reviewed in the Journal of Latin American Geography) the heavy
pesticide use by Costa Rican farmers in fruit and vegetable production. Costa Rican
exporters work closely with importing countries to ensure their produce meets
pesticide regulations (i.e., not too much residue left on the food). However, the
government has no regulations for the Costa Rican internal market. Therefore any
produce destined for local markets likely contains dangerous amounts of pesticide
residue which are toxic when consumed by humans (Elbow). If Costa Rica is able to
meet exporting requirements for pesticide residue on produce, surely those
regulations could be extrapolated to include food destined for the internal market.
This type of regulation could significantly improve the health of those who consume
these products. Another factor contributing to poor health in Costa Rica is water
quality. According to Yale University s

Organizational Behavior Dr. Carl Proehl February 4, 2013 Abstract This paper will
explore how people within the National Football League (NFL) interact with each
other to reach their goals as a team, and an organization as a whole. Sports teams are
defined as two or more individuals who possess a common identity, have common
goals and objectives, share a common fate, exhibit structured patterns of interaction
and modes of communication, hold common perceptions about group structure, are
personally and instrumentally interdependent, reciprocate interpersonal attraction and
consider themselves to be a group (Group Dynamics, 2004). There are many people...

There are a series of periods that teams go through in making their decisions. The
first is the preparation period, where the coaches and players anticipate the actions
the opponents intend to perform and the probability of the actions. This early stage
process is the one where video observation is used, studying the opponent s
strengths, weaknesses, and styles of play. The next decision regards how the team
(A) should react, or respond, to the actions of the opposing team (B). Timing and
quality must be a factor into team A s next move. If the opposing team (B) changes
their plan of action that was anticipated by team A, quick modifications must be made
to ensure a successful retaliation. The success of decision making within a team
depends on different mechanisms operating simultaneously and in mutual interaction
(Decision Making in Sport, 2004). Let s look more in depth at the visual aspect of
decision making. Visual information is critical for any team. The visual (spatial)
learning system is when a person (i.e. athlete) prefers learning through images, colors,
pictures and maps to gather information. Cueing and priming are key features in the
sport realm that are integral in visual attention (Decision Making in Sports, 2004).
When an athlete is confident of their opponent s next move, their

Gothic Horror Literature Of Edgar Allan Poe
Gothic horror literature has induced feelings of fear, shock, and abhorrence to
many readers since the eighteenth century. American writer, editor, critic, and poet,
Edgar Allan Poe became a highly influential figure in the world of literature and is
one of the first writers to develop this genre of fiction and horror. He is best known
for his short stories that capture many gothic horror elements. In Poe s popular short
stories The Fall of the House of Usherand The Tell Tale Heart
, Poe can be described
as a Gothic writer by exploring themes of death and darkness, madness and
helplessness, supernaturalism and setting and architecture, in order to reverse the
norms of rationality as illogical and unexplainable events generate fear in the reader.
For many centuries, people have had a morbid desire to explore the realms of
death and darkness; As a result, death and murder became a staple in Gothic
writing and a key feature in many of Poe s stories. Additionally, death is the
ultimate unknown which is why it is portrayed in The Tell Tale Heart as the
narrator resolves to murder his victim because he is afraid of the old man s eyes
resembl[ing] that of a vulture (138). He does so in a gruesome manner by suffocating
the old man with a mattress, dismembering his body, and proceeds to hide the
remains under the floorboards. In the Gothic age, one of the greatest fears was
anything that threatens reason; Consequently, Poe creates this horrid murder as it

Socioeconomic Factors Of The Salem Witchcraft Hysteria
In...
Salem Witchcraft Hysteria Salem, Massachusetts became famously known for the
witch trials that took place in the late 1600 s. For the men and women residing in
Salem, Massachusetts it was a time in which they lived in fear of allegations and
deceit. Twenty men and women lost their lives during what is known as the Salem
Witchcraft Hysteria. Socioeconomic tensions within the community are to blame
for the witchcraft hysteria in Salem, Massachusetts during the late 1600 s. Factors
such as politics, religion, and social status all played a role in the deadly and
devastating era. In Taking Sides: Clashing Views in United States History, U.S.
cultural and intellectual historian Paul Boyer and Professor Stephen Nissenbaum
argue in Salem Possessed: The Social Origins of Witchcraft, why they believe
socioeconomic tensions are responsible for the witchcraft hysteria in Salem. In the
same textbook, author Laurie W. Carlson expresses her beliefs in A Fever in Salem,
on why she feels the cause of the Salem witch hysteria had nothing to do with
socioeconomic tensions within the community. To learn more about the Salem
witchcraft hysteria, Historian Paul Boyer, and Professor Stephen Nissenbaum
sought to further understand the accusations of witchcraft. During the late 1600 s
life in colonial New England was one led by religion and politics. Salem was
broken up into two factions, Salem Village, and Salem Town. Salem Village, which
was led by the Putnam family was a rapidly growing

Reality in Cinema: A Subjective Perspective
Ever since the inception of cinema, questions about film s ability to capture or distort
true reality have plagued the medium. It is a question which satisfies most academic
types: it involves existential questioning of reality , film theory (which, in itself, just
sounds intelligent), and esoteric mostly esoteric film knowledge and jargon. Though
it s a question that has been long dominated by pretension and esotericism, it s a
very valid one that is important to investigate. Reality distortion through film is
particularly salient because it affects almost all who watch movies, which is a lot of
people. During my research, I ve come to a conclusion: Even though an objective
reality in cinema doesn t exist, there are types of representations of reality that can
have seriously damaging implications. These are representations of the world which
are intended to be impetuses for the harm of others. Films like The Cabinet of Dr.
Caligari and Battleship Potemkin showcase this potential to dictate and distort reality.
First, in order to decide whether reality distortion through film has any immediate
implications, we must establish that it is impossible to capture an objective reality
through film. Though this is not an essay that is exactly concerned with
philosophical posturing, a bit of existentialist thought is required when asking the
question of whether or

Analysis Of Proslogion By Anselm
Anselm, in his work Proslogion , attempts to answer the question Does God exist in
reality? based on the reason and understanding, temporary excluding faith for the sake
of argument. Anselm s ontological argument widely reflects the main themes of
medieval philosophy of religion, which are compatibility between the divine
attributes and theism in opposition to skepticism and naturalistic schemes. Arguing
for the monotheism, in other words, existenceof the single God, the author actually
assumes him to possess all the divine attributes. From here, one may already conclude
that Anselm, calling God something than which nothing greater can be thought ,
might unite divine attributes in one image and therefore assert the possibility of
coexistence

The US government is currently operating under a continuing resolution that is
effective through March 4, 2011 and its budget for 2011 has not been finalized.
Non finalized budgeted government projects and the lack of defense spending is
Lockheed Martin s greatest weakness.
D. Lockheed Martin through the years has acquired other companies under its brand,
essentially making themselves a power house. When these acquisitions and mergers
fail, they become a weakness for the company. One of the most notable merger fails
in the past was one with Northrop Grumman Corp. The Computer Business Review
(CBR) reported:
Lockheed Martin said it had been unable to reach an acceptable settlement with the
US Government over the deal, which would have created a combined company with
revenues of some $37bn. The move was part of the general rush to consolidate in the
defense industry. Los Angeles based Northrop says it now plans to grow its
information technology and services business, which currently contributes $1bn to its
revenues, to double that figure over the next five years.
Lockheed Martin was attempting to consolidate the Defense Industry, in reality they
were trying to put a strangle hold on it. The advantage would have been setting the
market price heavily in their favor since they bought out all the other competitors.
The government wasn t naive to what they were doing and it cost Lockheed
Ancient Egyptian Astronomy
Ancient Egyptian Astronomy vs. Mayan Culture Astronomy Joella L. Cain UMUC
Ancient Egyptian Astronomy vs. Mayan Culture Astronomy Astronomy is probably
the most ancient natural science in the history of the world. It is the study of celestial
objects, such as planets, moons, stars, galaxies, and comets; in terms of mathematics,
psychics, and chemistry. Earlier civilization studied astronomy by observations,
whereas, now the focus is more on the physics and chemistry of the celestial bodies.
Humans have evolved to become the most intelligent species, where we now have
advanced technology and even education. However, ancient intelligence is
incomparable, in which they deserve farmore credit. Some may look back and say
ancient ancestors were uncivilized and that their beliefs were foolish, but look at how
they were genius enough to watch movements of the stars to understand, predict, and
track time. They had no advanced technology, yet they managed to build monuments,
pyramids, and other historical sites that matched the movement of celestial objects
and their patterns. The ancestors used astronomy for their religion/beliefs, their
architectural sites, agriculture, navigation, calendars, etc. Although in the past,
ancient cultures were separated by thousands of miles, they all shared the
commonality of studying the stars. Archaeoastronomy is the study of how the people
of the past integrated their observations of the sky into their culture, and what

percent of heavy users of technology were found to have poor grades, versus 23

Spending too much time looking at phones with your head down at a minimal of

two, including Haydn, who owned a few harpsichords himself. (He owned a
similar harpsichord as the one pictured on the left.) Haydn grew up learning the
harpsichord and even taught the harpsichord when he was a older. Yet, the
harpsichord was becoming a thing of the past. While the harpsichord was not yet
obsolete, the way music for the keyboard was being written was changing. Edward
L. Kottick in his book, A History of the Harpsichord, writes that The dynamics in the
late sonatas of Haydn can be realized to perfection on an English Harpsichord with
machine and swell,...,but Haydn s sonatas are piano music and achieve their full
potential only on that instrument. However, Haydn abandoned the harpsichord a
few years before the nineteenth century. Helen Rice Hollis in her book, The Piano
A Pictorial Account of its ancestry and development, writes: He [Haydn] urged
Madame von Genzinger [a close friend of Haydn s] to buy a piano saying he could
no longer compose for a harpsichord. So right at the beginning of nineteenth century

Alexander Hamilton s Financial Plan
Still, Hamilton s funding plan went forward. To pay it all, the United States would
reissue bonds that would be paid in full over 15 to 20 years. In other words, the
country would issue new debt at a lower rate in order to retire the old ( Hamilton s
Plan to Fix the U.S. Economy , Mintz and McNeil The Federalist Era: Alexander
Hamilton s Financial Program ). But a centralized government isn t cheap to run
and the U.S. would need some new cash flows quickly in order to keep up with its
debt obligations as well as its new federal functions. Why Whiskey? Hamilton s next
step was to figure out a way to fund the new national government as well as
simultaneously service the new debt. Other measures were already in place that
proved insufficient... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The heaviest tax was on imported spirits like wine and brandy, but these were
primarily consumed by elites in the city who could afford it. The middle level of
the tax was on domestically manufactured products made from imported goods (for
example, rum made from imported molasses), but these products were mostly sold
on the east coast and the tax was passed on to the consumer. The tax on distilled
spirits was actually the lowest of the three level tax, but unlike in the east where
the tax could be passed to the consumer, westerners couldn t afford that. Even if
they whiskey was their currency (Smith, Andrew 67). Easterners also drank
primarily wine, cider, and beer while the westerners drank spirits (Axelrod 48).
Collectors were particularly lenient on wealthy eastern merchants whether it be on
import duties or excise taxes (Bouton 230). Hamilton wouldn t dare crack down on
them because he was being careful to maintain the goodwill of the wealthy and
powerful. He did not, however, need to be in the good favor of the small farmers.
Though it was a federal tax, the Whiskey Tax was regional in its scope. It encouraged
regional divisions, class distinctions, and soon stirred complaints about excessive

Essay On The Ghetto
Never thought living outside of the ghetto was peaceful and fun. Spent most time of
my life in a ghetto made by our government covered by big, thick wall to divide my
countrymen from others because our dark history. The government oppressed us for
what our ancestors had done. We had to bear their sins until now. To live outside of
the ghetto was everyone dream but it was possible until one day our government
named Marley decided to strengthen their army. Living outside the ghetto was
indeed peaceful and fun but no, not for me. It was a hefty price that I need to pay in
order to achieve that.
Listen carefully you people of ghetto! We, the Marley government, have decided to
gather warriors from among you. We have received a proclamation from King Fritz.

Are Colleges Worth The Cost Of College
Attending college after high school is a choice everybody has to make. However,
colleges can be very expensive to attend. The decision to go to college hangs mostly
on one question: Is college worth the cost? Many people evaluate the cost of college
by equating it to things such as family tradition and whether or not they need it for
their career. To some people, collegeis a stumbling block, but to others, it is the key
to their future. To begin, college has many benefits, despite the cost. College teaches
students more than book smarts, but also teaches life skills. Liberal Arts graduates
can be seen prominently in leadership positions in areas such as politics and culture
(Source B). In this aspect, college holds a key to a prosperous

the arts can be a driving factor for the empowerment of a community. For instance,
the Creative City Network of Canada says that the arts play an essential role in social

Algae Lab Essay

Ecology Interspecific Interactions Lab
Intro:
Ecology is the study of how organisms interact within their environment. Every
species interacts with its surroundings, whether it s within their populations,
community, ecosystem, etc. In this lab, we will be comparing two different species
and how they grow alone as well as together, in the same environment. More
specifically, in this lab, we will be dealing with one of the most important ideas in
ecology, the niche. Due to this concept, we can study the environmental
circumstances the organism can handle, the essential resources it will need to
survive, and how it will obtain these resources. Different species can hold similar
niches, and the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The carrying capacity determines the population level of a species according to the
limiting resources,
Algae is one of the most diverse and interesting organisms on the planet. This is
because there are over 10,000 unrelated species of organisms that contain
chlorophyll and live in large bodies of water or moist land. Keeping a count of
population size gives us a good indication of how certain species grow and interact
with one another. By using two different species of Algae we can determine what
types of interactions the two can encounter. The two species tested were Closterium
and Micrasterias algae. We labeled them as species 1 and 2. The purpose of this lab
is to determine whether the selected algae species will demonstrate competition or
resource partitioning with the coexistence of each other versus alone. At the end of
this lab we should be able to determine which species upheld the best under all of
these circumstances.
Methods:
This lab was performed with two different types of algae, Micrasterias and
Closterium. Within our groups, we counted how many of each species there were to
begin with. Each group sampled one micro liter of each algae stock, five times, and
then found the average of the five trials and converted it to milliliters. There were
three different test tubes of algae stock containing 100 individuals. The first
contained 100 Closterium,
Squid Vs Octopus
The squid and the octopus are both very fascinating aquatic creatures. They both
travel the ocean floor by jet propulsion, belong to the same kingdom, phylum, class,
and subclass Animalia, Mollusca, Cephalopoda, and Coleoidea, respectively and
live in saltwater tropics to the temperate zones of the ocean. However, with these
and several other similarities, the squid and the octopus are extremely different, in
their physiology, lifestyles and personalities, and diets. The squid and octopus are
both cephalopods with eight arms, known as head footed animals. Although they
share several similarities at first glance, their physicalities are very different. Where
squids possess a pen (a stiff sort of backbone) with two fins on it, the

Catholicism In America
On January 20, 1961, the first Catholic President of the United States of America was
sworn into office. John F. Kennedy held the office of the president during one of the
most turbulent times in the history of the United States; the Cold War was in full
swing, the Vietnam War was underway, the Civil Rights Movement was gaining
momentum, and America was undergoing a large cultural revolution. Many
important events required a variety of responses, and instrumental in JFK s
administration was his brother, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, the driving
force behind the focus on Civil Rights, and impactful in his meetings with the Soviet
Ambassador during the Cuban Missile Crisis. RFK continued his political career
after the untimely assassination... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being the third son and seventh child, Robert was largely ignored by his father
Joseph, who focused on the accomplishments of Joe Jr. and Jack, but received
much attention from his devout mother. RFK preformed poorly in school, and was
perceived as an awkward loner. Despite this, he developed a keen sense of personal
morality, and was very devout in his faith. Trained as an alter boy, an action he
carried into adulthood, he attended Mass at his private Catholic school more than
necessary, and stayed after to pray, and invited others to Mass as well. Joining the
Navy in 1943, not deploying in the war, and being discharged in 1946, RFK had
been sidelined from the greatest test of his generation...while other men were
fighting and dying all over the world. a fact that never stopped haunting the man
who valued courage above all else. RFK s strong Irish Catholic faith was evident in
his loving and devoted marriage to Ethel Skakel, and their 11 children. Ethel had
absolute and literal faith in the Catholic Church [that] complemented RFK s devotion,
which was not quite as unquestioning.... In Ethel s purity Kennedy may have found
refuge from temptation. This spiritual trust and reliance was important to Robert as
he worked in politics, focusing on
Beauvoir
Beauvoir s idea of explaining women as other is because of women were held in an
environment of traditional oppression to man through her position of inferiority.
And she approves that in her main assertion, One is not born, but rather becomes, a
woman (Beauvoir 607). By this, Beauvoir means that women are woman even
before being human, which claims that women are born feminine. Women are
representation of his desires. She is a women are tool for pleasure and a womb.
Women are taught from young ages what they re supposed to be in life. And what
kind of roles they can or cannot perform in order to qualify to be a the second sex.
Beauvoir explains that men always measure themselves against women, where they
only see their inferior sides and reduce women to a mere object. Even though, they
know that they cannot be matched in any way possible. Beauvoir describes the way
she believes that women are born and only exists physically. However women do not
conduct their purpose of existence or identity by their physical existence, rather
women are already constructed and formed as... Show more content on

Every human being, no matter who they are, is eligible to subjectivity. It is the
society who leaves women without their equal rights. De Beauvoir s statement is
highlighting the common need for a willed coexistence in both male and female.
She also rejects the view of women as alienated from their psychological destiny
and frustrated in an ineffective effort to be men or at least to be in the same
category. She sees estrangement for both men and women as dilemma caused by the
burden of self determination and the will of freedom. The idea of oppression of
women, and obtaining private property by enslavement and labor of women is
strongly rejected by Beauvoir. Instead, she traces women s enslavement to the
invention of tools, which became the exclusive field of
Good For Great By Jim Collins
Good To Great by Jim Collins is a book created with the intent to provide leaders
with tools required to make the jump from a good company to great one. The
Hedgehog Concept is an understanding used to differentiate between the two
variations of leaders: foxes versus hedgehogs. The book also discusses level five
leadershipand the importance of building everlasting greatness through personal
humility and professional will. Additionally, Collins uses two main organizational
performance concepts called The Flywheel to describe the victorious feelings
associated with the successful launch of a product or idea, and the opposite being the
Doom Loop. These three main concepts and principles make up the pivotal ideas
associated with the book, Good To Great. The Hedgehog Conceptwas created based
off a famous essay, which divides the world into two species: hedgehogs and foxes.
The essay states that the fox knows many things, while the hedgehog knows one
great thing. Foxes pursue many ends at the same time and see the world in all its
complexity (Collins, p. 91, 2001). Essentially, the fox represents the type of person
who has many great ideas and thoughts running through their head, but fails to focus
on one great idea. Hedgehogs, on the other hand, simplify a complex world into a
single organizing idea, a basic principle or concept that unifies and guides everything
(Collins, p.91, 2001). The hedgehog does not keen in on complexities of the world,
but instead diminishes all
Analysis Of Starbucks And Wal Mart Essay
Introduction
Sustainability has taken the mainstream corporate world by storm since major
companies realized that sustainability is directly linked to the viability of their long
term objectives. As sustainability is proven to be a motor of efficiency and
innovation, stakeholders, investors, employees, and customers are demanding
companies to focus not only on profits but also that those profits should not come at
the expense of people or the planet. Wal Mart and Starbucks have been early adopters
of the sustainability crusade and due to their contrasting approaches towards business
have developed two very distinct sustainability models. This paper will analyze the
sustainability systems implemented by Starbucks and Wal Mart, compare their
strategies, elucidate how these organizations have created different corporate social
responsibility systems, and finally determine which one of these approaches would
better support a long term sustainability model.
Analysis
Starbucks and Wal Mart are leaders in their respective industries. Their business
models are different and these differences are in part responsible for their contrasting
approaches towards sustainability. One of the best methods to understand the
divergent approaches to sustainability and the triple bottom line adopted by Starbucks
and Wal Mart is by analyzing and comparing the differences in their mission
statements, values, core competencies, and corporate social responsibility systems.

Most of the stories are set in and around a small town known as Maine. This essay will analyze the setting, which is common in most stories (par.2). As it happens, though, there are actually several distinct types of dog collars, made for various purposes. Let s have a look at how each one is used. Most dogs wear the traditional collar: a nylon or leather strap around the neck. This suffices for most purposes. Less convenient, but better for the dog s health, is a harness; this holds the dog s entire upper body rather than his neck. Starting off with the first one, Lieutenant Herbet Sobel was the Company Commander for Easy Company from training camp to just before the jump on Normandy. Lieutenant Sobel was universally hated by the majority of the enlisted men serving under him, including his junior officers having a great dislike for him also. The reason for this hatred was the harsh and intense training sessions that the company underwent on a regular basis. • 11. Rebirth in Sylvia Plath s Lady Lazarus, Fever 103,... Rebirth in Lady Lazarus, Fever 103, Getting There, and Cut The Ariel period poems of Sylvia Plath demonstrate her desire for rebirth, to escape the body that was drummed into use by men and society. I will illustrate the different types of rebirth with examples from the Ariel poems, including Lady Lazarus, Fever 103, Getting There, and Cut. Lady Lazarus, the last of the October poems, presents Plath as the victim with her aggression turned towards her male victimizer (33). Lady Lazarus arises from Herr Doktor s ovens as a new being, her own incarnation, the victim taking on the powers of the victimizers and drumming herself into uses that are her own (33). Linda Bundtzen also sees the poem as an allegory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the multiple orgasms of Fever 103, the delirious woman sublimates a body sick with desire into an acetylene virgin flame and thereby rids herself of any need for men to complete herself sexually; Thus, Plath freed herself from male dependency (Bundtzen 236). Two Ariel poems Cut and Getting There do not exhibit a full rebirthbut rather exploit the female body s victimization to mover towards new self perceptions (Bundtzen 247). In both poems the female body remains passive, acted upon by the mind s transforming powers (Bundtzen 247). In Cut the amputation of the thumb is a symbol of female castration; she became a dirty girl, unable to be a pure female any longer. Plath understands her self amputation as an acting out of her self hatred as a woman, she is deficient by virtue of her female wound (Bundtzen 247 248). The speaker is cut while doing her duty and she unconsciously tries to stop it by cutting off her finger. In Getting There, the speaker is a Jew in a box car on her way to a concentration camp. She identifies with all the wounded and dead: The tent of unending cries (Plath 248). What gives the speaker this solemn sympathy with the casualties of war is her female body. She knows these atrocities as a part of her very being, her genesis (Bundtzen 249): There is mud on my feet Thick, red and slipping. It is Adam s side, This earth I rise from, and
  • 12. Public Opinion And Policy Implications Of Television Television remains a very important standard regarding how the community view the criminal justice system. Most residents have very little contact with the criminal justice system, usually limited to contacts with police. Only an estimated 21 % of citizens have contact with police officers in a year, and 40 % of those contacts are merely traffic stops (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2002). Most people get their information and perceptions about crime and the criminal justice system through various media outlets. Those who rely on the media, however, do not always receive an accurate view of reality. Media depictions, whether accurate or not, have very important public opinion and policy implications. One prime example of how the media can have powerful influences on public opinion was the focus on school violence in the past decade. The school shootings in the 1990s caused a panic among many parents who had children in school at that time. As portrayed by the media, school violence and shootings were on the rise, and something had to be done. As a result of the public outcry, Congress held hearings on the problem, and school budgets were strained in order to get such enhancements as metal detectors and school cameras. The media attention given to school shootings seemed to result in a widespread panic, where actual statistics and logical assessments of the threat were replaced by emotionally charged reactions to these isolated incidents (Burns Crawford, 1999). In actuality,

The reading A Cyborg Manifesto by Donna Harawaypoints out that we are cyborgs. There is no difference between human and machine and this boundary has been breached. Cyborgs are a hybrid of machine and organism. They often appear in the science fiction. Quite a few of the constellation s brighter stars are also members of the Centaurus / Scorpios association. The reason I chose this constellation is because of its significance to my country. The Southern Crossis on the national flag, and I have always wondered about the legends and reasons behind this constellation. This constellation was, as mentioned above, part of Centaurus, so there was no traditional myth about its creation. However, Crux was not separated as a singular constellation until 1516, by Italian explorer Andreas Corsali. Quite derivatively, the Southern Cross (Crux) was named for its shape, and the hemisphere that can see it. The Ancient Greeks once were able to see it, but over time it disappeared over the horizon, so now the southern hemisphere can see it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 24. Timeded Writing Reflective Report My enrollment in school has familiarized me with timed writing before. Through my progression in the education system my experience with timed writing gave me practice and made me more comfortable with it. However, there are still areas where my writing needs improving. Being able to write proficiently in a timed environment requires a lot more practice than I have had. Nonetheless the WPJ practice assignment is a means for me to improve the quality of my writing. I will use it to determine my strengths and weaknesses as a writer along with analyzing the challenges I faced during the process of the timed writing. Analyzing my timed writing practice I noticed that I do not deviate from the main topic of my paper. All three body paragraphs have main points that are related to my thesis. Because of this my paragraphs stayed on the topic of the prompt and did not shift into other off topic subjects. Another strength I found was making claims and using evidence to prove my claims true. I advocate a certain point and then I use evidence from the texts provided in our WPJ prompt.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When I m not writing under time constraints I have a harder time forming ideas, so my writing process is slowed down. With the constant pressure under time I was forced to write in a quicker pace and think harder about the topic and texts that came with the prompt. However, I found this time constraint to be also very challenging. It shifted my focus away from sentence structure and grammar. Because of this, I made more spelling errors than usual, and my paper didn t have the most sound sentence structure. I also had to plan an entire essay in about 10 minutes which was difficult because normally I have a whole week to plan and write a first draft. Besides the difficulties of timed writing I found the exercise to be fruitful because it showed me my areas of strength

Tourists flock to this country each year, attracted by its lush tropical forests and its colourful fauna. However, Costa Rica s average tourist may be surprised to learn that poverty is a persistent problem for this apparently rich and diverse country. Many Costa Ricans (familiarly known as Ticos) suffer from poor health and complain about bad infrastructure. Although the tourism industry provides substantial revenue for Costa Rica, the industry also has a dark side, including the promotion of prostitution and drug abuse, among other things. When these three factors poor health, bad infrastructure, and tourism... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To achieve maximum output at work, and thus earn a decent living, a worker must be of sound mind and body. This feeling of being in tiptop shape can be compromised by many things, including food quality, macronutrient intake, and water quality. Unfortunately, many Ticos do not have access to these benefits which developed countries take for granted. Ryan E. Galt describes in his book Food Systems in an Unequal World: Pesticides, Vegetables, and Agrarian Capitalism in Costa Rica (as reviewed in the Journal of Latin American Geography) the heavy pesticide use by Costa Rican farmers in fruit and vegetable production. Costa Rican exporters work closely with importing countries to ensure their produce meets pesticide regulations (i.e., not too much residue left on the food). However, the government has no regulations for the Costa Rican internal market. Therefore any produce destined for local markets likely contains dangerous amounts of pesticide residue which are toxic when consumed by humans (Elbow). If Costa Rica is able to meet exporting requirements for pesticide residue on produce, surely those regulations could be extrapolated to include food destined for the internal market. This type of regulation could significantly improve the health of those who consume these products. Another factor contributing to poor health in Costa Rica is water quality. According to Yale University s

Sports teams are defined as two or more individuals who possess a common identity, have common goals and objectives, share a common fate, exhibit structured patterns of interaction and modes of communication, hold common perceptions about group structure, are personally and instrumentally interdependent, reciprocate interpersonal attraction and consider themselves to be a group (Group Dynamics, 2004). There are many people... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are a series of periods that teams go through in making their decisions. The first is the preparation period, where the coaches and players anticipate the actions the opponents intend to perform and the probability of the actions. This early stage process is the one where video observation is used, studying the opponent s strengths, weaknesses, and styles of play. The next decision regards how the team (A) should react, or respond, to the actions of the opposing team (B). Timing and quality must be a factor into team A s next move. If the opposing team (B) changes their plan of action that was anticipated by team A, quick modifications must be made to ensure a successful retaliation. The success of decision making within a team depends on different mechanisms operating simultaneously and in mutual interaction (Decision Making in Sport, 2004). Let s look more in depth at the visual aspect of decision making. Visual information is critical for any team. The visual (spatial) learning system is when a person (i.e. athlete) prefers learning through images, colors, pictures and maps to gather information. Cueing and priming are key features in the sport realm that are integral in visual attention (Decision Making in Sports, 2004). When an athlete is confident of their opponent s next move, their

  • 29. Gothic Horror Literature Of Edgar Allan Poe Gothic horror literature has induced feelings of fear, shock, and abhorrence to many readers since the eighteenth century. American writer, editor, critic, and poet, Edgar Allan Poe became a highly influential figure in the world of literature and is one of the first writers to develop this genre of fiction and horror. He is best known for his short stories that capture many gothic horror elements. In Poe s popular short stories The Fall of the House of Usherand The Tell Tale Heart , Poe can be described as a Gothic writer by exploring themes of death and darkness, madness and helplessness, supernaturalism and setting and architecture, in order to reverse the norms of rationality as illogical and unexplainable events generate fear in the reader. For many centuries, people have had a morbid desire to explore the realms of death and darkness; As a result, death and murder became a staple in Gothic writing and a key feature in many of Poe s stories. Additionally, death is the ultimate unknown which is why it is portrayed in The Tell Tale Heart as the narrator resolves to murder his victim because he is afraid of the old man s eyes resembl[ing] that of a vulture (138). He does so in a gruesome manner by suffocating the old man with a mattress, dismembering his body, and proceeds to hide the remains under the floorboards. In the Gothic age, one of the greatest fears was anything that threatens reason; Consequently, Poe creates this horrid murder as it highlights

For the men and women residing in Salem, Massachusetts it was a time in which they lived in fear of allegations and deceit. Twenty men and women lost their lives during what is known as the Salem Witchcraft Hysteria. Socioeconomic tensions within the community are to blame for the witchcraft hysteria in Salem, Massachusetts during the late 1600 s. Factors such as politics, religion, and social status all played a role in the deadly and devastating era. In Taking Sides: Clashing Views in United States History, U.S. cultural and intellectual historian Paul Boyer and Professor Stephen Nissenbaum argue in Salem Possessed: The Social Origins of Witchcraft, why they believe socioeconomic tensions are responsible for the witchcraft hysteria in Salem. In the same textbook, author Laurie W. Carlson expresses her beliefs in A Fever in Salem, on why she feels the cause of the Salem witch hysteria had nothing to do with socioeconomic tensions within the community. To learn more about the Salem witchcraft hysteria, Historian Paul Boyer, and Professor Stephen Nissenbaum sought to further understand the accusations of witchcraft. During the late 1600 s life in colonial New England was one led by religion and politics. Salem was broken up into two factions, Salem Village, and Salem Town. Salem Village, which was led by the Putnam family was a rapidly growing

Reality Of Cinem A Subjective Perspective Tesla Teed Professor Christina Kallas Intro to Film 29 September 2014 Reality in Cinema: A Subjective Perspective Ever since the inception of cinema, questions about film s ability to capture or distort true reality have plagued the medium. It is a question which satisfies most academic types: it involves existential questioning of reality , film theory (which, in itself, just sounds intelligent), and esoteric mostly esoteric film knowledge and jargon. Though it s a question that has been long dominated by pretension and esotericism, it s a very valid one that is important to investigate. Reality distortion through film is particularly salient because it affects almost all who watch movies, which is a lot of people. During my research, I ve come to a conclusion: Even though an objective reality in cinema doesn t exist, there are types of representations of reality that can have seriously damaging implications. These are representations of the world which are intended to be impetuses for the harm of others. Films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Battleship Potemkin showcase this potential to dictate and distort reality. First, in order to decide whether reality distortion through film has any immediate implications, we must establish that it is impossible to capture an objective reality through film. Though this is not an essay that is exactly concerned with philosophical posturing, a bit of existentialist thought is required when asking the question of whether or

Analysis Of Proslogion By Anselm Anselm, in his work Proslogion , attempts to answer the question Does God exist in reality? based on the reason and understanding, temporary excluding faith for the sake of argument. Anselm s ontological argument widely reflects the main themes of medieval philosophy of religion, which are compatibility between the divine attributes and theism in opposition to skepticism and naturalistic schemes. Arguing for the monotheism, in other words, existenceof the single God, the author actually assumes him to possess all the divine attributes. From here, one may already conclude that Anselm, calling God something than which nothing greater can be thought , might unite divine attributes in one image and therefore assert the possibility of coexistence

Cain UMUC Ancient Egyptian Astronomy vs. Mayan Culture Astronomy Astronomy is probably the most ancient natural science in the history of the world. It is the study of celestial objects, such as planets, moons, stars, galaxies, and comets; in terms of mathematics, psychics, and chemistry. Earlier civilization studied astronomy by observations, whereas, now the focus is more on the physics and chemistry of the celestial bodies. Humans have evolved to become the most intelligent species, where we now have advanced technology and even education. However, ancient intelligence is incomparable, in which they deserve farmore credit. Some may look back and say ancient ancestors were uncivilized and that their beliefs were foolish, but look at how they were genius enough to watch movements of the stars to understand, predict, and track time. They had no advanced technology, yet they managed to build monuments, pyramids, and other historical sites that matched the movement of celestial objects and their patterns. The ancestors used astronomy for their religion/beliefs, their architectural sites, agriculture, navigation, calendars, etc. Although in the past, ancient cultures were separated by thousands of miles, they all shared the commonality of studying the stars. Archaeoastronomy is the study of how the people of the past integrated their observations of the sky into their culture, and what

The harpsichord was already in it s decline by Haydn s time and the fortepiano was rapidly becoming popular among musicians, professionals and amateurs alike. However, it had not yet become obsolete. There were many amateurs and professional musicians who still owned a harpsichord or two, including Haydn, who owned a few harpsichords himself. (He owned a similar harpsichord as the one pictured on the left.) Haydn grew up learning the harpsichord and even taught the harpsichord when he was a older. Yet, the harpsichord was becoming a thing of the past. While the harpsichord was not yet obsolete, the way music for the keyboard was being written was changing. Edward L.
