London, and Zurich, but ultimately the world. In this documentary the world of Drag Kings is
presented to its viewers. Drag Kings are mostly women performers who dress in male clothing in
order to personify gender stereotypes. Normally performing as exaggerated male characters whose
routine may consist of dancing and singing, these characters in the end, become political activists

this documentary we realize that cross dressing, as a man, is not as acceptable as many would

In her Oppressive Texts, Resisting Readers, and the Gendered Spectator: The New Aesthetics,
Mary Devereaux discusses the notion of the male gaze. The male gaze is a term largely discussed
by feminists who ultimately criticize the patriarchal nature of mainstream art. According to
Devereaux, a gazeought to be considered male, in the literal sense, if it is men doing the looking.
In the figurative sense, the male gaze refers to a viewpoint which places women as its object. Put
simply, the gaze is male if women are being used as entities of pleasure (Cahn 651). Still,
Devereaux argues, there remains a difficulty in fully understanding the definition of the male gaze.

Women evidently create films, too. Still, the institution of film making is undeniably dominated
by men. Even if men are not always creating the film, they are nevertheless controlling who does;
the male gaze is not always male, but it is always male dominated (654). This control is not
meant to refer to anatomy per se, but the idea that film contributes to the supremacy of men over
women regardless of its author (654). This type of control is significant because it implements a
preference for films which depict women who are aligned with patriarchal assumptions; men as
subjects and women as objects (654). Consequently, in film, women do not describe the world from
their point of view. Instead, women learn to submerge or renounce their subjectivity; they find their
own identity in the desires of the men to which they are attached (654). Therefore, Devereaux
concludes, the issue is not whether it is a male or female who is doing the looking. Rather, the
question is whether a patriarchal way of seeing the world triumphs regardless of who is behind
the camera. In this sense, the discussion of the literal gaze becomes a discussion of the figurative
gaze (654). Still, the literal viewing of a film nevertheless has an empirical practicality; watching
a film is irrefutably a visual experience. Additionally, as Devereaux illustrates, there is a damaging
objection to the literal/figurative distinction: men, like women, do not merely look. Their looking
mimics a particular way of thinking about and acting in the world (654). Of course, this raises the
question of how the figurative way of seeing which we deem male translates to film. It also inclines
