Essay On Economic Recession
Writing an essay on the topic of economic recession can be a challenging task, requiring a
comprehensive understanding of economic principles, historical context, and current global
economic trends. The complexity of the subject demands thorough research and a nuanced
analysis of various factors contributing to economic downturns.
One of the difficulties lies in navigating the vast amount of information available on the topic.
Economic recessions are multifaceted phenomena influenced by diverse factors such as fiscal
policies, monetary measures, international trade dynamics, and socio-economic indicators. The
writer must sift through an extensive array of data to identify relevant and impactful information
that contributes to a coherent narrative.
Moreover, crafting an insightful essay involves critically examining the causes and consequences
of economic recessions. This requires a deep understanding of economic theories and the ability
to synthesize information from various sources. Addressing the intricacies of economic recessions
necessitates not only a strong grasp of economic concepts but also the ability to communicate
complex ideas in a clear and accessible manner.
Furthermore, the dynamic nature of the global economy means that the writer must stay updated
on current events and economic developments. The essay should reflect the latest data and
incorporate real-world examples to enhance its relevance and credibility. Adapting to the
evolving landscape of economic recessions adds an additional layer of complexity to the writing
process.
In conclusion, composing an essay on economic recession is a formidable task that requires a
blend of analytical skills, research acumen, and a profound understanding of economic
principles. Successfully navigating these challenges can result in a well-crafted essay that sheds

The Theme Of Nike Foreign Exchange Exposure Essay
I. Introduction
The purpose of this report is to analyze the theme of NIKE foreign exchange
exposure. In this research, NIKE financial report 2014 will be used a fundamental
source to analyse the break down of revenue according to market or segments of Nike.
Nike Enterprise possesses heaps of segments all over the world such as North
America, Central Eastern Europe, Greater China, Japan, and Emerging Markets. In
addition, there are also manifold merchandises manufactured and distributed beyond
the United States. Hence, large amount of purchase and sale transactions in different
currencies are executed by Nike enterprise. If foreign currency exchange rates and
interest rates waver, Nike enterprise may suffer a decline in revenues, growth in cost,
and lower margins and earnings.
There are lots of methods to solve the changes in foreign currency and interest rates
issue, however, derivative financial instruments are the major tunes Nike enterprise
has used to tackle this issue. Despite the fact that this approach does not wipe out
comprehensively the risk of foreign exchange, Nike enterprise still utilize it to
minimize or delay the negative consequences. Specifically, the derivative financial
instruments comprise embedded derivatives, interest rate swap, and foreign exchange
forwards and options contracts (Nike annual report, 2014).
Research questions: To begin with, I would like to analyze NIKE foreign exchange

Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde And Mary Shelley
George Gordon Byron was born on January 22, 1788, London, England died April
19, 1824, Missolonghi. He was British Romantic poet whose poetry and
personality captured the imagination of Europe (britannica.com). Byron was
known to have influencing the gothic period and many popular american authors
such as Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde, and Mary Shelley. Byron was the son of
Captain John Byron nicknamed Mad Jack and his second wife a scots heiress,
Catherine Gordon. Byron did not have a great childhood. Both sides of his family
comes from strange backgrounds. His father was known to be a gambler,
womanizer, and spendthrift while his mother was not emotionally stable.
Swinging between extravagant tenderness and violent rage. Since he was born
with a clubfoot he couldn t walk until the age of 4 his mother would indulge him
and overwhelm him with loving affection, then scream that he was a lame brat
making him very sensitive with his disability as he got older. He developed a
distinctive gliding walk to hid his disability. In the last years of he life he wrote a
play, The Deformed Transformed which opens with a mother attacking her crippled
son for being a monstrous sport of nature. Byron began going to church every
Sunday when he began to believe that his disability was a punishment from god for
some unknown sin. In 1798 at the age of 10 he unexpectedly inherited the title and
estate of his great Uncle William. In 1803 he fell in love with his distant
To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway Essay
To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway s novel, To Have and Have Not, is about a man named Harry.
Harry is a fisherman, and when he goes fishing he brings along a black man named
Wesley. Eddy, who is a rummy, and Mr. Johnson who chartered Harry s boat also
accompanied him on one of his fishing expeditions. On this fishing journey that
Harry and all of his colleague s had taken, Harry said to Mr. Johnson, I think you re
going to have a chance to fight one today. About that time Mr. Johnson had a fish on
his line. He kept on pulling on the fishing line and giving it slack. For a few
moments, they all thought that the fish mighty be dead, but after he got off of the
line they knew that Mr. Johnson had messed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Mr. Singer wanted Harry to charter him the boat and he did not want Harry to be
on the boat when it arrived, but Harry had objections to that. He said that he went
on the boat wherever it went. Harry would also have to take a dozen compatriots
on the boat with him. Late that night Harry went to pick up the shipment. When
they meet up with Mr. Singer he told Harry that he would get twelve hundred
dollars if he did the job right. They loaded the cargo, boarded the boat, and sailed
out into the ocean. On this trip Harry also carried along Eddy, the rummy, with
him. When they got out to sea, Harry took out his Winchester 30 30 and shot Mr.
Singer. After he shot him, he threw him overboard. Harry headed back toward land
to unload the cargo. He also let Eddy off the boat, because he was shocked that
Harry had killed Mr. Singer and he was afraid that Harry might try to kill him too.
After a couple of months had passed, a guy by the name of Bee lips had another
job for Harry. It was to ship someone liquor. After they had gotten through with all
their planning, Harry went to the house. He told his wife Marie that he had to
make another trip, and he wanted her to wake him before daylight; so she did. The
day after he had his job, he went to Freddy s place. While he was there Bee lips
came in and told him that customs had just went out to take his boat. Harry got that
kill look in his eyes and he got very mad at Bee lips.
Reasons Why Couples Choose Not To In-Person Therapy
Many couples experiencing relationship distress choose not to seek therapeutic help.
Recent estimates founded that only 19% of intact couples seek any type of
counseling or therapy for their relationship and that only 37% of divorced couples
sought any couple therapy prior to divorcing (Cicila, Georgia, Doss, 2014). Reasons
why couplesdecide not to seek treatment are because of the perceived stigma
associated with therapy, financial burden, and logistical concerns, such as difficulty
scheduling appointments or finding transportation to appointments (Cicila et al.,
2014). These findings show couples would rather keep issues between themselves
than talk to a therapist who has the skills and expertise in marital discord. As an
alternative... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A limitation to this intervention is that it may not be efficient for distressed couples.
Especially for couples dealing with long term issues in their relationship. For couple
participating in this form of intervention may not get enough out of the program. they
may need more support and guidance. An internet based intervention does not
provide the same level of therapy as in person therapy. couples may benefit from in
person therapeutic intervention more than the on line program. Couples struggling
with the online program may get frustrated which can escalate the distress in their
relationship. Another limitation is due to the fact that therapy is online, couples
may not take the program seriously and not be fully committed. This leads to the
program having a low completion rate and may not be seen as an effective form of
therapy. A limitation of the OurRelationship.com program is that most of the
activities are done individually. If couples are having problems in their relationship,
it would make sense if they performed activities together. If there were a few
activities that are required to be done individually that would be okay. But requiring
activities to be done individually does not seem like it would benefit the couple.
activities presumed together allows couples to communicate and actively work on

Personal Electronics, Clothing, And Vacation Destination
1.Consider the last purchase you made in these categories: personal electronics,
clothing, and vacation destination. To what extent was your purchase decision
influenced by decision making complexity, individual influences, social
influences, and situational influences? What specific issues were the most
influential in making the decision? How could a marketer have swayed your
decision in each case? When making majority of my purchases I do research on
the item and analyze all the reviews that are left from customers that have already
purchased the item. The last personal electronic that I purchased was my Apple
MacBook. The decision making complexity was not a major issue when making
this purchase. I have owned many laptops and they all seemed to have last for
about three to four years. My wife has owned her MacBook for almost ten years
and has never had an issue. I knew I was going to buy a MacBook and all the
different specs that I could choose from never really made a difference. The
individual influence from my wife played a major role in this purchase. She has
never had any problems with her MacBook and pushed that I make the same
purchase for my next computer. The social influence was not a major factor in the
decision to make the purchase as many of my friends did not own a MacBook. The
situational influence played two major factors against the purchase of the MacBook.
The software that a MacBook uses is different from Windows that majority of
computers use.
Library Donation Books
This summer I spent hours on the library s third floor, a large area used for storage
since the 1970 s; no air conditioning but lots of dust. I sorted through 177 boxes of
books that were donated to the library. Library staff are not following the current
donation policy and all donated books are given to the Friends BookSale. Many
books in my Adult Fiction section are in well loved condition with water damage,
broken spines and torn pages. Sorting through the boxes led to the addition of 300
adult fiction titles not owed by the library, example added a new copy of Odd
Thomas by Dean Koontz. The donationbooks were used to replace 450 loved books
with newer copies, example replaced a water damaged, broken spine copy of The
Nightingale by Kristin Hannah with a brand new copy. My frustration leads me to
search for information about how to handle book donations in a public library. I
searched the Library and Information Source link on Clarion s online library page
using the term handling gift or donated books . I selected Kay Ann Cassell s article
Handling gift books in libraries: A view from the US. Cassell s article provides an
overview of guidelines to be used in creating a gift book policy. A gift or donated
book policy should be part of the library s Collection Development policy. Library
staff are able to follow a policy that explains the purpose of the library s collection,
what the library provides, who are library users and what types of materials are
Chavez Decided To Nationalize Cargill Essay
Chavez decided to nationalize Cargill due to not producing a cheaper rice that is
included in price control. Now could of Chavez handle this a different way instead
of seizing a plant. Another alternative could have been to impose a hefty fine,
similar when companies break laws in the United States. Cargill is a US company
and this might be an attempt to not allow profits to be brought back to the US and
remain in Venezuela. Cargill said it has complied with all laws and regulations and
the plant was manufacturing Parboiled rice at this site for the last 7 years (Fox
News, 2009). Chavez is trying to nationalize the country more and more by
controlling telecommunications, electricity and food. The government says this is
necessary to keep prices affordable and control inflation. Since, Chavez was classified
as a dictator he was justified in his actions to do as he pleased.... Show more content

Some benefits from nationalization are increased earnings of the State,
employment opportunities, technical efficiency and lower cost of production. On
the other hand some disadvantages of nationalization are lack of freedom, lack of
spirit of competition and less intervention of public in economic affairs. If I were
the executive of Cargill, I would set up a meeting with the government to work on a
situation to get my plant back and figure out a plan going forward where both sides
are happy. If the negotiations did not go well, I would look into selling the operations
in Venezuela to another company and move on from
Watching God Symbols
The times in which Their Eyes Were Watching God took place were extremely
difficult for a black woman to live in let alone find her voice. Zora Neale Hurston
uses symbols throughout Their Eyes Were Watching God to explain events, rather
than sating them. She interprets many important aspects of life and turns these
events into symbols throughout the novel. Hurston uses the horizon and the pear
tree as symbols to illustrate, clarify, and intensify abstract concepts in the novel
such as Janie s general ambitions and her specific dreams respectively. The horizon
represents Janie s life aspirations as well as the possibilities for change and perhaps
improvement. Hurston explicates the vitality of recognizing the significance of
the horizon (the location of her hopes and dreams) when understanding the plot by
mentioning it in the opening paragraph of the novel: Ships at a distance have
every man s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they
sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher
turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the
life of men (Hurston 1). Janie s dream lingers on the horizon for the majority of her
life; She can wish and hope for better things, but her reality is very different. Since
the start, Janie s dreams are restricted by circumstance. Early in her life, Nanny had
taken the biggest thing God ever made, the horizon, for no matter how far a person
can go
The Main Features Of Plato Kallipolis
The purpose of this essay is to find central features of Plato kallipolis justice city. In

Only one thing, the developing individual will come to love beauty and shun
ugliness even when are still young and cannot understand the reason for so doing
but one will recognize in this Form all that is beautiful. Another image that Plato
uses for the educational process is of a plant witch flourishes in the right conditions
but withers in adverse ones. Possible to say that beauty is defined by and to the
other, is to surround the child with beauty, truth and goodness order to make the
growth of growth of these qualities in its developing self. In reality, the world is not
always beautiful, it is often ugly; and people are not always virtuous, they are often
cowardly, intemperate and injustice. The Theory of Forms are idea of one over many
it particular instances of justice. Normally it appears to include at least beauty,
justice and goodness as a central example in the Republic, some very general
nations such as Identity and Differences, Being and non Being, the one and the
Many. Plato ideas could be considered as a sample of the prevailing classical
conception. Plato realizes that the general run of humankind can think and speak.
The allegory of the cave is supposed to explain this in the allegory; Plato likens
people untutored in the Theory of Forms to prisoners chained in a cave, unable to
turn their heads. All people can see is the wall of the cave. Behind them

The Similarities Between Beethoven And Rachmaninoff
Ludwig van Beethoven was a German musician known as one of the few who had a
strong influence on classical music. For many, Beethoven is considered the
predominant musical composer who formed the bridge between the classical and
romantic era. This gave way to romantic composers such as Sergei Rachmaninoff,
who is considered one of Russia s finest pianist and romantic composers. Some people
may argue that the musical talents of Beethoven cannot be compared to other
composers, however, when you compare his personal life with Rachmaninoff; it
seems that tragedy had an influence on both their lives. Even though Beethoven and
Rachmaninoff lived during different centuries and they came from different
countries, they both shared the same passion for creating beautiful music despite the
hardships in life. Although some of the differences between Beethoven and
Rachmaninoff are evident, the similarities are pronounced. Ludwig van Beethoven
was born in Bonn Germany on December 16, 1770 and he died on March 26, 1827
at the young age of 56 from pneumonia complicated by cirrhosis of the liver and
dropsy. In the book The Gift of Music Great Composers and Their Influence by
Jane Smith and Betty Carlson, Beethoven was described as a short, stout man with
a very red faced, small piercing eyes, and bushy eyebrows (56). On the contrary,
Rachmaninoff was described as a tall man who didn t fit quite fit in. He measured at
6 6 and his giant hands could strike 13 on the keyboard.
Barring Greenback, Long Kiwi Dollar Against Major Peers
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD), also known as the Kiwi, was one of the best
performers last year. As show in the chart below, the currency gained 20.48% and
13.60%, respectively, against the Japanese Yen (JPY) and the Australian Dollar
(AUD).
Needless to say, gaining against the US Dollar (USD) was as uncommon thought
last year as it is this year, in view of the Fed s stimulus taper and imminent interest
rate hike. So barring Greenback, below are a few arguments supporting the bullish
case for Kiwi.
Faster growth
There s no denying that New Zealand s economy was nothing short of impressive last
year. The economy held out against the worst drought in decades, fiscal
consolidation, a contamination scare, a strong currency and, to top it all, a slowdown
in its two most important trade partners, viz. Australia and China. Although each of
these factors posed a significant risk to growth, the resilient economy overcame these
challenges and is growing at its fastest pace since 2009.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) sees gross domestic product expanding
by 3.3% in the fiscal year that ended March 31, faster than its December projection
of 2.7%. The economy is then expected to expand 3.2% in the year through March
2015.
The growth has been primarily driven by recovery in various important industries of
New Zealand. The farm production surged on drought recovery, while the nation also
benefitted from major building and infrastructure projects following the 2011

Cultural And Political Causes Of The Darfur Genocide In
Sudan
INTRODUCTION
Genocide is defined as the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political,
or cultural group. The Darfur Genocide refers to the current mass slaughter and rape
of men, women, and children in Western Sudan (Mitchell Hamline School of Law).
Not only are these atrocities happening, but the Darfurians are being force from their
land and into refugee camps, mainly in the country Chad, but also other countries like
Ethiopia or Kenya. Darfur genocide causes can be found both culturally and
politically. The cultural and political causes come from the same source of that being
an underdeveloped country with no effective government protecting the rights of the
Darfurians. Darfurians were violently pushed around, physically and mentally, with
the western world not stepping in to assist. Although eventually, both Britain and the
United Nations came to the same conclusion that the atrocities occurring in Darfur
were genocide and one of the world s worst humanitarian crises (Thomson Reuters).
Genocide occurred in Sudan in the Darfur region starting in 2003 and continues
today. The long standing divide between Arab herding tribes and the African farming
tribes and the political opportunism arising from the environmental calamity led to
the genocide in Sudan.
CAUSES
a.Political Cause. Politically, Darfur genocide is rooted in the government s role of
funding, Janjaweed or devils on horseback, who destroyed the Darfurians by burning
villages, looting
A Brief Note On The Supply Chain Management
Introduction Technology in Supply Chain Management Till not to long ago the
area of Supply Chain management was seen as a task that took place in the
background without any dedicated resources. Majority of the people thought it
was only used by large brands that have an international distribution need. When
there was an issue in the supply chain, people were pulled from their existing jobs
to fix the issue. Once the problem was solved, the people would go back to their
original tasks. There was a lack of patience, demand and awareness amongst the
customers back in the day, as online ordering and tracking were processes that they
weren t familiar with. For example, even the service provided by the U.S. Postal
Service was considered... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It became obvious that observing the route of goods using pins on a map would no
longer make the cut. Technology has crept into SCM slowly, starting with
electronic invoicing, computerized shipping and tracking as well as automated
notifications that were progressively used by companies like FedEx and UPS.
Initially intended for business to business interactions, it took time before that
level of tracking and accountability was provided to consumers. But it became quite
clear that notifying everyone along the chain has become increasingly important.
It was only when companies like Zappos which positioned itself to be customer
friendly, by creating a tagline Powered by Service, came into limelight that clients
got a flavor of how they have a huge role to play in purchases. Zappos as on online
company, did not start with brick and mortar stores, so instead of adapting to new
technology, they were embraced by it. The fact that the consumers get notified at
every step of the process is what makes them love the experience. Before deciding to
make the purchase, extensive reviews can be read to make an informed decision,
they can also have a check on the mother brand. This set the benchmark for online
customer service; firm that could match up to this standard gain a competitive
advantage. Companies like Apple and Harley Davidson use this benefit to further
personalize the buying experience by going
Leda Vs Madonna Essay
Vyse exhibited two figurative works at the 1947 Royal Academy these were Leda
(RA1198), and Madonna (RA1212). Records show the figures modelled in terra
cotta, but there are no further descriptive details. In 1948, he exhibited three figure
groups at the Royal Academy, Orangs (RA1948), and Boy on a Bull (RA1341).
These were not new models, but Vyse had not previously exhibited them at the RA
in a terracotta form. Intriguingly, Vyse s third exhibit he again titled Leda
(RA1339). How this figure did or did not differ from the exhibit of the previous
year so far remains unexplained. It had become apparent to Vyse, his wife Nell
would not be returning to him as either wife or partner at Cheyne Row. Since 1940,
he had worked by himself at modelling figures and throwing pots on the wheel.

Al Capon Research Paper
Do you really know what the prohibition era? The prohibition era was indeed the
banning of alcohol but it was also a creation to many problems. It solved men
becoming violent to others but also created a way for the mafia to create a profit
from the alcohol. Such as al Capone himself he inherited a bootlegging business
from one of his former boss Johnny Torrio. One of the most famous murders from al
Capones organizations was the valentine s massacre. Production of any alcoholic
beverage was illegal.
So who was al Capone and why is his name so important? Well al Capone is a very
smart and important guy when it comes the prohibition era. He ran his business in
bootlegging alcohol. Bootlegging was not such a clean business to get into there
was also crime and violence connected to bootlegging. The saint valentine s massacre
wasn t blamed on al capons men since there was not much evidence to put him

place making guns shootings murders more often. for example for al Capone to

The cause and effect of the first crusade
An Examination of the Causes and Success of The First CrusadeReligion has
served mankind for thousands of years in our search for meaning and direction.
Religion serves as a way of defining our lives and providing a sense of meaning or
direction, having done so since the beginning of time. While religion may appear to
be a peaceful endeavor, it is an endless source of violence and bloodshed. The duality
of religion is accurately portrayed in the Christian crusades. The crusades of the late
antiquity exemplified this duality of religion and the horror religion can bring.
Thousands upon thousands fought and died, not for king or country, but under God.
The kingdoms of Christendom united under the common goal of retaking the holy

This quote outlines a concern not only with the violence afflicting Christian nations
but the increase in population as well as the lack of land. Europe was described
almost as a confinement surrounded by mountain peaks to which the solution to their
problem cannot be found. Since the only land available was in possession of other
Christian nations, it was impossible to maintain peace. Thus the solution, since land
and wealth would ultimately lead to European conflict; a war against an alien enemy
seemed a logical conclusion. Through the excuse of foreign aid, Christendom could
extend both its wealth and land without civil war at the expense of Muslims .
This the Redeemer of the human race has made illustrious by His advent, has
beautified by residence, has consecrated by suffering, has redeemed by death, has
glorified by burial. This royal city, therefore, situated at the center of the world, is
now held captive by His enemies, and is in subjection to those who do not know
God...She seeks therefore and desires to be liberated, and does not cease to implore
you to come to her aid... God has conferred upon you above all nations great glory in
arms. Accordingly undertake this journey for the remission of your sins, with the
assurance of the imperishable glory of the kingdom of heaven.

The Picnic Mikalah Ferguson Summary
The picnic

One day little red riding hood was at her grandmother s house wondering what she
could do, so she asked her grandmother for ideas. Well her grandmother said, you
should host a picnic in the back she pointed to the back door. Great idea! little red
riding hood then ran out of the kitchen to go spread the news, first , she ran past
humpty dumpty s wall and told him all about the picnic that sounds delightful just
make sure there are no egg products ! he says with a chuckle, ok ,make sure not to

The Effects of Dehydration
Dehydration james November 18, 2010
Dehydration Water is an essential part to maintaining a healthy body and weight.
Without the proper intake of water, the body becomes dehydrated and it begins to
pull it from other places including from your blood. This causes the closing of some
smaller vessels (capillaries), making your blood thicker, more susceptible to clotting,
and harder to pump through your system. This can have serious implications in
hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Recent studies have also linked the
lack of water to headaches, arthritis, and heartburn. (TheraGear 2001) An estimated
60 percent of our body weight is made up of water. Water helps to decrease fat
because it suppresses the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sodium exists outside the cell and concentrated potassium exists inside the cell.
When nerve cells are stimulated, sodium passes into the cell and a negative
electrical charge is created. The electrical travels to a muscle cell which causes the
muscle to contract. To maintain healthy intracellular charges, muscle contraction and
fluid balance, a diet high in potassium is highly recommended. Fresh fruits and
vegetables, grains, beans, whole milk and meat can help achieve a potassium rich
diet. Sodium and chloride react together in blood cells which trigger a sodium
concentration. This concentration causes sensations of thirst in the body and causes
us to drink. Within 24 hours, the sodium and excess water is secreted and the body
is returned to its normal state. A diet high in sodium and chloride can lead to
hypertension and decreased kidney and heart function. (The effects of dehydration)
Caffiene should be drank in moderation. Caffeine is a stimulate of the cardiac muscle
and central nervous system. When caffeine is consumed in excessive amounts it can
cause stomach issues, insomia, nervousness, and dehydration. Caffeine affects the
kidneys by acting as a diuretic, which increases urine production and therefore
increases loss of water from the body. Numerous studies have provided evidence
linking this loss of fluid with high levels of caffeine
Baroness Emmuska Orczy s The Scarlet Pimpernel
Charles I of England was sentenced to death by guillotine in 1649 due to his
crimes. Similarly to the once loved king, many aristocrats during the French
Revolution faced this same dreadful fate. Throughout The Scarlet Pimpernel this is
shown numerous times. In 1792 during this Revolution, France was taken over.
Many Aristocrats attempted to escape their executions but were hopelessly
blocked by barricades around the city. Baroness Emmuska Orczy uses suspense,
heroism, and conflict to show the true strength of her fictional character, the
Scarlet Pimpernel. Although this is only a disguise, it s no secret that the Scarlet
Pimpernel embodies a hero and stands up for the people of France. The Pimpernel
s true name is Sir Percy Blakeney. The novel focuses on his suspense filled
adventures in attempts to save the aristocrats as he disguises himself as peasants,
old Jews, and more. Blakeney was given his name because, upon leaving the scene
of escape, he would leave behind a note signed with a red, star shaped flower, In
England, this flower was known as the scarlet pimpernel. Although the richest man in
England and an epic hero, of course, Blakeney is known to be quite dull and... Show

The major plot of the book is built around the disguise of the Scarlet Pimpernel.
Unlike your average hero, he becomes successful through with and deception.
Without his disguise, a spot on the guillotine would have been easily arranged for
him. However, the disguise blended him in with the masses, preventing his execution.
Another major theme of the novel is nobility versus the masses. During the French
Revolution, nobility was under fire and killed haphazardly by the bloodthirsty
masses. The masses were created to be very barbaric in order to give the nobility a
sense of compassion and elegance. Keep in mind that these personas were not exactly
accurate, but they drastically enhanced her
Gone Baby Gone By Ben Affleck
Is this morally acceptable? is a common question people face before making drastic
decisions. Moral standards play a giant role in everyday life as well as the movie
Gone Baby Gone. Gone Baby Gone is a movie directed by Ben Affleck which deals
with many moral issues. Through the movie, we see that morals are violated left and
right. For example, Patrick Kenzie would go to drastic measures to ensure Amanda
got back safely to her mom. Another moralityissue visible in Gone Baby Gone is the
fact that Lionel knowingly sabotaged his family. A final morality issue in the
movie was Patrick Kenzie, the main character, was involved in a lot of corrupt
activities, which can be agreed on being morally wrong. The decisions he makes
violate many moral standards, but he ensured that he would do anything to save
Amanda. One of the first scenes of the movie that showed Patrick s immoral side
was when he was in the bar snooping for information on Helene, Amanda s mother.
He got himself into an argument with the bar owner and the bars customers. As
things started getting heated, Patrick drew his gun and threatened each individual
with it. Patrick has no hesitation as to when to draw and use his gun. In the film, he
shot Corwin Earle in the head and killed him. Kenzie showed no mercy towards
Corwin. Corwin did molest and kill a child, but was shooting him in the back of the
head the morally correct thing to do? Corwin was not fighting back or threatening
Kenzie, so Kenzie should have just
Key Elements In Mean Girls, Directed By Mark Waters
In the movie, Mean Girls, Mark Waters uses key elements, such as plot, to express the
different themes in the film.
Some of the first areas of plot seen in the movie are the protagonist and the
antagonist. As described by Greg Johnson and Thomas R. Arp, the protagonist is the
central character in a conflict (98) and the antagonist is any force arranged against
the protagonist (98). Most seem to think that the protagonist has heroic qualities, but
as said by Johnson and Arp, this is often not true (98). But, in the case of Mean Girls,
the protagonist of the film, Cady Heron, seems to save the day at the end of the
movie. Within the movie, Cady makes some poor choices. An example of this is
when she lied to Regina about the Kalteen bars ... Show more content on

Conflict can be defined as a clash of actions, ideas, desires, or wills (Johnson, Arp
98). Conflict is derived from the existence of a protagonist and an antagonist, so
because Cady is the protagonist and Regina is the antagonist, the primary conflict in
the film is character versus character. It is this conflict that helps support the theme.
For example, conflict is noticeable through Regina and Cady s changes at the end
of the film. Even after Cady had tried everything she could to ruin Regina s life,
and Regina had tried everything to make Cady jealous, both still forgave each other
as they went their separate ways. The audience can understand that the two girls
forgave each other based on when Cady says, all of the drama from last year just
wasn t important anymore (Waters) at the end of the film. By saying this, the
viewers recognize that Cady is stating that the two girls had finally forgiven one
another. This evidence helps to support the theme because even though Cady did
terrible things to Regina, and Regina did terrible things to Cady, they still learned to
forgive one another. The evidence also helps to provide a theme for the audience that
is meaningful and important. Through this description, the audience gets an idea of
the theme s place in the story, and how it is meant to teach society to
Gilgamesh And The Epic Of Gilgamesh
The maturation of Gilgamesh and his desire to acquire wisdom throughout his
journey is quite apparent. By overcoming difficulties such as upholding Uruk,
becoming friends with Enkidu, and various other scenarios, Gilgamesh proves that
he did in fact grow up throughout the epic. As the epic starts, Gilgamesh is
portrayed as a self centered, self admiring leader who believes that he is the only
individual that can lead the city of Uruk. Gilgamesh believes that he is a god like
figure and often refers to himself as one. He believes that he is above everyone
else in the city of Uruk. For example, in the epic there is a scene where Gilgamesh
enters the city of Uruk, the epic describes the scene as; He entered the city of Uruk
the Town Square, and a crowd gathered around. He came to a halt in the street of
Uruk the Town Square, all gathered about, the people discussed him (15). This
quote is a good example of how Gilgamesh expected those around him to respect
and look up to him as a god like figure. He did not lead the city of Uruk humbly; he
wasn t a leader who strived to feel like a normal citizen of the city. Instead,
Gilgamesh felt that he was entitled to more privileges than the average person.
Early on in the epic, Gilgamesh is described as a tall, magnificent and terrible, who
opened passes in the mountains, who dug wells on the slopes of the uplands, and
crosses the ocean, the wide sea to the sunrise (2). This demonstrates how selfish
Gilgamesh truly was, and how all
The Social Responsibility of Positive Communication

The purpose of this report is to explore the social responsibility Graphic Designers
have regarding communication with the mass media. Berman remarks how
designers have a disproportionately large influence in these three areas: 1.How
messages intended to influence the behavior of large audiences are selected,
crafted, and delivered 2.How people are portrayed and represented visually 3.How
raw materials for designed objects are consumed (99). It will consider the influence
and power designer possess, the negative outcomes of bad communication, and how
designers can do good. This research is significant because the world today needs to

Although it s true that logos incorporate an influence and a branded personality,
there is a trouble in finding a multicultural common ground. According to Conroy,
people still value [their] cultural roots so it would be unwise to suppose that all
interpretations are going to be correct. Claiming that graphic designers can create a
global language through graphic imagery and typography is a bold statement. Since
it takes a sender and a receiver to communicate, we must acknowledge that although
the designer potentially has [influential] power, it depends on the viewer/audience
to give up some kind of control (Mazutinec). Therefore, Berman refers to Adbusters
magazine founder Kalle Lasn who implies we are only in part responsible by
claiming, that most North Americans can only identify 10 plants, but can recognize
1,000 corporate brands (53). It is also important to recognize that designers are a
small part of a large industry that only deserves either part of the credit, or part of the
blame. Either way, is it sad that throughout the world, the second most understood

Issues regarding the planets global warming, the acceleration of cultural changes, and
overconsumption should be part of our society s main focus. Instead of promoting Go

Design Standards And Design Languages And Their Impact
On...
Introduction Design is subjective. There is no question or counter argument to
dispute that claim, people naturally like good design. While it may seem drastic to
assume that design is something that requires immense skill, it s important to
know that design encompasses everything that the average person will do in their
life. When it comes to software, design can make or break the success of a product.
Defining what design is and citing examples from important software designers is
the first step to expound why design is so important to modern society. Next,
highlighting design standards and design languages and their impact on the world
of design is just as important as describing the process designers use to amalgamate
digital physics and interaction, in order to engender users with a sense of alluring
delight. After that, defining the basic ideas and processes behind designing, from
concept to working golden release, are also required to introduce users to the
importance of design. In order to help explain various design experiences and
concepts, such as using design everyday or as a tool, it can be important to look at a
few design languages (in depth guidelines on software physics, motion, and design).
Search Story In my opinion, design is one of the most important parts of human
interaction within both our physical and digital worlds. Anyone can make something,
but improving and constantly reiterating are important factors, necessary to improve

to participate in the workforce and promote stronger business confidence.
The budget can also be used to redistribute the incomes to increase equality. This
means redirecting incomes from top income earners to the lowest earners. It is
achieved primarily through progressive taxes. However in the 2015 16 budget
inequality is unlucky to be changed much on a national level. Investment in child care

Key Differences Between Individual Racism
Discuss the key differences between individual racism and institutional racism . Give
examples to illustrate your argument .
The Oxford English Dictionary describes racism as prejudice, discrimination, or
antagonism directed against a group or individual of a different race based on the
belief that one s own race is superior . It is significant when concerning oneself with
the discussion of racism that a clear and concise distinction is made between the two
different types of racism. Firstly there is individual racism. It is defined by overt
acts carried out by an individual which can, in extreme cases; result in the death of
the victim immediately. However it can also cause destruction of property, assaults,
and verbal abuse and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When a black family moves into a new home in a neighbourhood dominated by
white people, and their home is consequently vandalised or the subject of arson
attacks, it is deemed by people to be intolerable and racist. It is institutional racism
when slum landlords and loan sharks pry on the black people trapped in decrepit
tenements, and in some cases slums, where they have little chance of escaping their
situation due to a system that has predetermined their failure and their second class
status.
Racism in this form is not kept to countries like the US and Britain, but more to the
western world. Society is either ignorant to its existence, unwilling or unable to do
anything about it. Stokely Carmichael believes that the resistance towards any action
that may permanently stamp out institutionalised racism stems from the fact that
western society enjoys its luxury.
When I use a word, Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, it means just
what I choose it to mean. Neither more nor less .
The question is, said Alice, whether you can make words mean so many different
things .
The question is, said Humpty Dumpty, who is to be master. That is all .
This quote comes from Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. Those with the power
to define are those with the power to rule. Moving away from the debate about
western cultures as being institutionally racist as a whole, there are aspects within
these cultures that are racist to their own citizens.

This leadership style bases itself on McGregor s Theory X, that regards team
members to be careless and disliking work, assumes they attempt to avoid work as
much as possible, and are in need of guidance from their leader.
There are two definite strengths of authoritarian leadership: efficiency and
productiveness. These both impact the team positively, as team members will feel
satisfied having completed a task/accomplished a goal successfully. Generally, the
more efficient and productive a team, the more likely they are to be successful.
Authoritarian leaders are proficient at motivating others. This leadership style
allows for fast decisions which can be a lengthy process in other leadership styles
such as bureaucratic. This essentially allows the team to begin a project and
complete it promptly. An example of where this leadership is most effective is in
the Armed forces. There is a clear defined structure of ranks and roles within the
regiment. There is one leader in charge (the general) who instructs lower ranks and
gives orders. The sergeant does this without any input from lower ranks. Northouse
(2012) states some would argue that authoritarian leadership is a much needed form
of leadership it serves a positive purpose, particularly for people who seek security
above responsibility. This supports the strengths of the authoritarian leadership

Utility Vehicles (SUVs) have become a part of our culture, as cars did before them
and hoarse and buggies before that. Transportation has always been a part of society

villages, or for getting between towns, but these same animals of old were also used
to till the lands and to cultivate crops. Automobiles on the other hand have changed
this entire picture as they are used primarily for transportation. However, as this ...

It should be noted that four wheel drive technology has been around since the turn of
the twentieth century. From the 1940 s to the 1980 s these primitive SUVs changed
little as they were rough riding, back country vehicles used by the armies, campers,
and hunters of the world to move easily under the toughest of conditions.
In the early 1980 s changes in the SUVs began to occur as family sizes grew,
gasoline prices dropped, and more people wanted to head out into the country on
weekend excursions. The growth of sales gradually increased until the end of the
1980 s when a sudden change in car markets occurred. People no longer wished to
drive the family station wagons of days past, nevertheless they still needed vehicles
that could transport many people, but with a new style. The car market found
satisfaction in the sport utility vehicles. Though they were rough and not nearly as
refined when compared to car standards people like the concept. The idea of being
able to go anywhere anytime appealed to many as they began to drop thousands of
dollars into these new vehicles.
Before 1980 SUV design as well as production had always been behind cars, however,
it did not take long for the car manufacturers such as GM and Ford to begin mass
production of SUVs. With the jump in sales of SUVs the demands of buyers became

Virginia Slave Codes The Virginia Slave Codes date all the way to early 1600s.
During the 17th century, indentured servants, who decided to work for an affirmed
amount of time in replace for their means of access to the New World , were a
handy resource of manual labor for the American colonies. Both blacks and whites
served under the system (Goldenburg 1). White servants, after working out their
time of agreement, often progressed to appreciated places in the society. On the
other hand, their black correspondents, who totaled to about 2,000 in Virginia in
1670, were rarely given the same treatment. By the middle of the century, they were
usually regarded as servants for life. In the late 1650s, laws referring to slaves started

It declared that slaves needed written authorization to leave their plantation, that
slaves found accountable of murder or rape would be hanged, that for robbing or
any other major offence, the slave would receive sixty lashes and be placed in
stocks, where his or her ears would be cut off, and that for minor offences, such as
associating with whites, slaves would be whipped, branded, or maimed. (Henning
1) Black slaves were forbidden from carrying firearms by a 1639 Virginia law,
which prearranged 20 lashes for violations of the law. There was one exception:
with his master s permission, a slave could bear firearms to defend against Indian
raids. (Goldenburg 2) For the 17th century slave in Virginia, disagreements with a
master could be result before a court for judgment. A slave owner who wanted to
stop the most defiant of slaves could now do so, aware any punishment he or she
imposed, could include death and would not outcome in even the smallest amount
slap on the wrist. In 1705, Virginia law began to define more clearly the status of
slaves as property. Slaves could be used both as collateral for borrowing money and
as assets in the payment of debts. (Goldenburg 3) At the time of the American
Revolutionary War, what was later called the peculiar institution of slaverywas an
unsettled subject among the 13 Colonies. However, the basic basis for its end was

The Eternal City And Her Empire
Michael Miller
Extended Essay
(Lack of title page)
Word count: 2594
Introduction
The Eternal City and her empire, spanning at its peak from chilly Britain to
sweltering Egypt, did not spring from glory (Nelson). Her legions were not born,
trained, and blooded as professionals, or as the legends that they came to be; nor
were her architects and engineers blessed by providence with the talent that has kept
Rome standing for more than two thousand years. It indeed rings true when said or
heard that Rome was not carved out from her seven hills; not built; not fought for
nor killed for in a day. Her legacy was painstakingly written with the lives of
millions, and the many victories of her army were learned and prepared for through
just as many losses.
It was not intrinsic ability that conquered all of the Mediterranean coast and lands
beyond, but cunning, the ability to adapt when beaten, to recognize superior tactics
and to outwit them, to learn from other cultures and militaries, and most importantly,
to get back up off the ground when conquered and hit back harder than ever before.
The empire created by the sword, lived by the sword, and died by the sword,
wielded by one of the most dynamic and influential militaries in the history of the
world.
The research question of this extended essay is, To what extent did the Roman
military adapt and change as a product of warfare and contact with other cultures,
from the tribal days of Rome to the end of the Republic? Though her

Summary Of I Am A Black Woman
The Legacy of a Black Poet
A rhyme scheme. An antidote. Poems are often viewed as simple things to read.
People do not notice realize how perplex they can be. Poetry has its own way of
telling a story. In only a few lines, one s entire life can be explained. However, only
some poets know how to connect to their audience on a different level. It takes a
specific type of person to create vivid pieces of literature. Usually authors who
thrive on writing have gone through experiences that made them full of wisdom.
The way one writes reflects back on who he/she is as a person. As a result of
growing up in a traditional black family, Mari Evans incorporates her values about
being an African Americanin her poem, I Am A Black Woman.
Initially, Mari Evan s childhood was like that of several African American children
in her time. She was born into a traditional black family located in Toledo, Ohio on
July 16, 1923. At a young age, she was taught to take care of her elders and how to
be polite. She had a normal life until her mother passed away when she was only
10 years old. However, her father became one of her closest family members. He
showed her continuous support in her career interests and was always there for her.
Correspondingly, Evans was determined to become a fashion designer in her early
years. To receive a degree in this major she attended the University of Toledo.
However, her interest in fashion design faded and she never earned a degree. It was

Ed Fleming Rhetorical Analysis Paper English 102 Thurs Hybrid In Barbara
Ehrenreich s book Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by In America we read
about a middle aged journalist undertaking a social experiment of the greatest
magnitude. The journalist is Ehrenreich herself and the experiment was to find out
how a woman, recently removed from welfare, due to policy reform, would make it
on a six or seven dollar an hour wage. The experiment itself started out as just a
question in the middle of lunch with one of Ehrenreich s editors, it soon turned into a
job assignment. Before starting the experiment, Ehrenreich laid out some ground
rules for her to follow during the duration of the assignment. First she could never use

High turnover is something that goes hand in hand with low wage jobs, so
companies are always looking for a workers replacement. Finally Ehrenreich is
able to secure employment at a place she give the pseudonym, Hearthside. To help
protect identies of companies and people she actually worked for and with,
Ehrenreich decides to use fake names to achieve anonymity. Ehrenreich starts out at
2.43 an hour plus tips. One of the first things Ehrenreich notices is that the people
around her are only working hard enough to get by. Because the managers will yell
at anybody who is done with their work, and not doing something new, the workers
seem to be happy with just working at a slow pace, doing just one job. Because the
only reward for finishing early is being yelled at by a manager, that apparently spends
his day doing nothing, there is no real bonus to go the extra mile. Due to this negative
reinforcement, Ehrenreich notes that the restaurant is almost moving in
counterproductive mode. With less being worked on, less is being accomplished,
attributing to the overall sad appearance and low morale of the restaurant and its
employees. The next problem Ehrenreich encounters is the constant berating handed
out by her supervisor Stu . Ehrenreich observes that due to this constant barrage of
insults and degradations, workers are forced to feel like they are subhuman. Weekly

The results will aid us in determining vegetation composition and create vegetation
profiles of the area.
Tulare County, with the exception of the National Parks, has one of the least known
floras in California. Since much of the valley floor has been converted to
agricultural purposes and the foothills dedicated to ranching, there have been few
botanical surveys performed. Evidence of gaps in collections are glaring when one
references the site localities of collections in the Cal Flora website. The Sierra

Distinctive patterns of plant distribution are evident at the SCICON facility.
Riparian habitats associated with Bear Creek show high diversity and are well
represented by plants requiring high moisture soils such as alders, sycamores, and
willows. South and west facing slopes receive the greatest amount of solar exposure
and thus support only plant species well adapted to drought and heat stress. Quercus
douglassii (Blue Oak) appears to be the dominant species in this strongly xeric
environment. North and east facing slopes have a very diverse representation of trees
that include Umbellularia californica (California bay), Quercus wislizeni (live oak)
and Aesculus hippocastanum (horse chestnut). Within these varied environments are
found an array of vegetation types listed above that are named after their dominant
species. At SCICON Quercus douglasii (Blue Oak) Woodlands are the most
dominant. Several species collected over the last few months had not been previously

Water Cycle Assessment
Paper and Pencil write up: This paper and pencil assessment lines up with my
classroom cohesively. This assessment was constructed for a 3rd grade suburb
classroom. My classroom will be a very hands on classroom, and my student would
have had plenty of time to learn about the water cycle, draw diagrams, discuss, and
do plenty of experiments. The paper and pencil assessment will take place after we
have finished the water cycle unit in science.
The goal of my assessment is wage how well my students know the concept of the
water cycle, how it works, identify and define the various steps of the water cycle,
and connect the water cycle back to their own lives. In the true false and the multiple

Mac has an extraverted personality and loves to socialize. Mac enjoys that the 3rd
grade classroom he is in is centered on class discussions, and likes to participate.
Mac has trouble focusing on class material because he focuses so much on
socializing and has ADD. Mac excels at language arts because of his skills in
conversation, and his love for reading. Overall, Mac is your average student. I love
the experience, the process, and the idea behind narrative assessments. I think it is a
beautiful ways of communicating with the students and their families. Using
narrative assessments, children are not a letter grade, or a number; they are
strengths, weaknesses, interests, personalities, and quirks. I plan on communicating
with parents on a weekly to monthly basis via email. I would love to model this
narrative assessment style by keeping a constant conversation going between the
child s care givers, and me (the teacher). This way parents could voice their
concerns, and I could voice my concerns and we could collaborate to make their child
s education fit the child s needs. IN addition, both parents and I could share the
student s achievements inside or out of school, and build background to child s
interests and us it when educating them. I hope that I will use narrative assessments
in my class, even though they are time consuming, because they appear to be an
effective part of a
Satire In American Beauty
American Beauty is an American satirical drama directed by Sam Mendes. It was
first released in late 1999 and won many awards, among them five Academy
Awards in 2000. The movie depicts the life of Lester and Carolyn Burnham played
by Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening. Lester, a 42 year old magazine writer and
advertising executive, and Carolyn, an ambitious real estate agent, reside in an
unidentified, well to do American suburb together with their teenage daughter Jane.
This essay seeks to examine how suburbia affects these two main characters.
Viewed from the outside, Lester and Carolyn seem to have it all: A child, a
spacious home with a well kept front yard located in a nice suburban neighborhood,
and two well paid jobs to provide for their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lester s voice over accompanying the scene states: Look at me, jerking off in the
shower. This will be the high point of my day. It s all downhill from here (American
Beauty). A bit later one can see Lester wearing a gray suit and sleeping in the back
of his wife s car while she is driving him to work, and his voice over states: Both my
wife and daughter think I m this gigantic loser, and... they re right. I have lost
something. I m not exactly sure what it is, but I know I didn t always feel this...
sedated (American Beauty). The gray suit he is wearing can be seen to exemplify
the gray monotony of his every day life, and his sleeping on his way to work as
evidence that his work is not exciting or fulfilling either. The next scene, which
actually shows Lester at his workstation, demonstrates that his job is, in fact, boring
and monotonous: Lester is depicted sitting in a neutral gray beige cubicle that is
surrounded by various other gray beige cubicles and people indistinctly looking at
their computers or speaking into headset phones. Moreover, the white artificial light
on the ceiling makes the entire office appear cool and
Shel Silverstein s Where The Sidewalk Ends
Live Life With The Glass Half Full Being predominant in careers such as a children
s poet, a cartoonist, an author, and a songwriter gives Shel Silverstein special insight
into the mind of a child, helping him understand their way of thinking. Silverstein
relays these understandings into many of his works, including this poem called
Where the Sidewalk Ends. . In the poem, the speaker depicts two specific places: the
sidewalk and the street.During the first couple of reads, the poem is quite fairytale
like, but truth be told, this poem may not be as whimsical as it seems. Using
hyperbolic language, diction, and vivid imagery, Silverstein addresses how the
mundane progression from the mentality of childhood to the mentality of adulthood
changes one s perception of life.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first stanza describes the place where the sidewalk ends , using euphoric
words, such as moon bird (5) and peppermint wind (6), to evoke a dreamy, content
mood. The use of euphony assists in portraying the indulgences of childhood,
appealing to senses dulled in adulthood as humanity grows too arrogant to revel in
these simple pleasures. The second stanza is a quick transition to describing the
street . A street is a place for commute, work, and responsibility and in the poem, the
speaker uses of cacophony to connote this street as negative, dark, and dreary. With
this, one can presume that the street symbolizes the adult world. This contrasts with
the sidewalk, which is describe with a sense of serenity. The harsh, bleak words
continue on in the stanza: Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow (9). The
speaker uses the fictional paradox of asphalt flowers to exaggerate what constitutes as
nature, or beauty, in the urbanized world, a technique used throughout the
Social Stratification In A Christmas Carol Essay
History is composed of countless periods of time that are defined by a variety of
characteristics and breakthroughs. Understanding multiple periods of history can be
facilitated by means of literary supplements. There are instances of explaining history
by means of literature, such as in Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Charles
Dickensdescribes and explains the social stratification in Britain in A Christmas Carol
by using the setting and environment within the film as well as clearly contrasting the
lives of Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, and Fred. The story of A Christmas Carol
takes place during the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Industrialization brought
many opportunities for the wealthy and the middle class to progress and grow in in
society. However, these opportunities locked the poor and working class in a state of
poverty and harsh working and living conditions. The intense social stratification
roots from the forces that allowed Britain to be the center of the Industrial
Revolution. Britain s laissez faire government supported the independent capital
decisions the wealthy could make; therefore, the individuals who could afford to
invest in the production and growth of the factories, did. As factory production grew,
the more stable the economy got. With a steady economy, the wealthy was able to
stay at the top of society. Ebenezer Scrooge, the film s main protagonist, was a
member of the wealthy, upper class.
During the Industrial Revolution, the middle

The Kenyon Commencement Speech By David Foster
Wallace
I believe that existence is comprised of hundreds and millions of different realities
intermingling and colliding into one another. I also believe that at the center of each
reality there lies the individual who crafted it. Our perception of what is real and
false exists solely in our own minds, and our minds are what determines the lense in
which we perceive the world. Our perception is largely influenced by our psyche;
how we live and think stems from our perception of the world. Our brains are directly
influenced by a number of key factors, including but not limited to; societal
connotations, individual experience, instinctual desires, environmental factors, and
cognitive thought. These factors, as well as other conditions, are what determine our
default setting. In his noteable This is Water speech, given at the 2005 Kenyon
Commencement Address, David Foster Wallaceargues a similar idea as he explains
his take on the phrase teaching you how to think . Through his use of relatable
parables and anecdotes and repetition and reverent focus of words like choice and
awareness he paints a livid picture of the use of conscious choice in our daily lives.
He stresses the concept of a self centered default setting that comes from an
individual s blind certainty and the repercussions that deferring to that default can
have on an individual s lifestyle and fulfilment. If we are unable to recognise the
water in which we dwell we will always remain unaware, stuck in an

Since he was born with a clubfoot he couldn t walk until the age of 4 his mother would indulge him and overwhelm him with loving affection, then scream that he was a lame brat making him very sensitive with his disability as he got older. He developed a distinctive gliding walk to hid his disability. In the last years of he life he wrote a play, The Deformed Transformed which opens with a mother attacking her crippled son for being a monstrous sport of nature. Byron began going to church every Sunday when he began to believe that his disability was a punishment from god for some unknown sin. In 1798 at the age of 10 he unexpectedly inherited the title and estate of his great Uncle William. In 1803 he fell in love with his distant
  • 4. To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway Essay To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway Ernest Hemingway s novel, To Have and Have Not, is about a man named Harry. Harry is a fisherman, and when he goes fishing he brings along a black man named Wesley. Eddy, who is a rummy, and Mr. Johnson who chartered Harry s boat also accompanied him on one of his fishing expeditions. On this fishing journey that Harry and all of his colleague s had taken, Harry said to Mr. Johnson, I think you re going to have a chance to fight one today. About that time Mr. Johnson had a fish on his line. He kept on pulling on the fishing line and giving it slack. For a few moments, they all thought that the fish mighty be dead, but after he got off of the line they knew that Mr. Johnson had messed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mr. Singer wanted Harry to charter him the boat and he did not want Harry to be on the boat when it arrived, but Harry had objections to that. He said that he went on the boat wherever it went. Harry would also have to take a dozen compatriots on the boat with him. Late that night Harry went to pick up the shipment. When they meet up with Mr. Singer he told Harry that he would get twelve hundred dollars if he did the job right. They loaded the cargo, boarded the boat, and sailed out into the ocean. On this trip Harry also carried along Eddy, the rummy, with him. When they got out to sea, Harry took out his Winchester 30 30 and shot Mr. Singer. After he shot him, he threw him overboard. Harry headed back toward land to unload the cargo. He also let Eddy off the boat, because he was shocked that Harry had killed Mr. Singer and he was afraid that Harry might try to kill him too. After a couple of months had passed, a guy by the name of Bee lips had another job for Harry. It was to ship someone liquor. After they had gotten through with all their planning, Harry went to the house. He told his wife Marie that he had to make another trip, and he wanted her to wake him before daylight; so she did. The day after he had his job, he went to Freddy s place. While he was there Bee lips came in and told him that customs had just went out to take his boat. Harry got that kill look in his eyes and he got very mad at Bee lips.
  • 5. Reasons Why Couples Choose Not To In-Person Therapy Many couples experiencing relationship distress choose not to seek therapeutic help. Recent estimates founded that only 19% of intact couples seek any type of counseling or therapy for their relationship and that only 37% of divorced couples sought any couple therapy prior to divorcing (Cicila, Georgia, Doss, 2014). Reasons why couplesdecide not to seek treatment are because of the perceived stigma associated with therapy, financial burden, and logistical concerns, such as difficulty scheduling appointments or finding transportation to appointments (Cicila et al., 2014). These findings show couples would rather keep issues between themselves than talk to a therapist who has the skills and expertise in marital discord. As an alternative... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A limitation to this intervention is that it may not be efficient for distressed couples. Especially for couples dealing with long term issues in their relationship. For couple participating in this form of intervention may not get enough out of the program. they may need more support and guidance. An internet based intervention does not provide the same level of therapy as in person therapy. couples may benefit from in person therapeutic intervention more than the on line program. Couples struggling with the online program may get frustrated which can escalate the distress in their relationship. Another limitation is due to the fact that therapy is online, couples may not take the program seriously and not be fully committed. This leads to the program having a low completion rate and may not be seen as an effective form of therapy. A limitation of the OurRelationship.com program is that most of the activities are done individually. If couples are having problems in their relationship, it would make sense if they performed activities together. If there were a few activities that are required to be done individually that would be okay. But requiring activities to be done individually does not seem like it would benefit the couple. activities presumed together allows couples to communicate and actively work on their
  • 6. Personal Electronics, Clothing, And Vacation Destination 1.Consider the last purchase you made in these categories: personal electronics, clothing, and vacation destination. To what extent was your purchase decision influenced by decision making complexity, individual influences, social influences, and situational influences? What specific issues were the most influential in making the decision? How could a marketer have swayed your decision in each case? When making majority of my purchases I do research on the item and analyze all the reviews that are left from customers that have already purchased the item. The last personal electronic that I purchased was my Apple MacBook. The decision making complexity was not a major issue when making this purchase. I have owned many laptops and they all seemed to have last for about three to four years. My wife has owned her MacBook for almost ten years and has never had an issue. I knew I was going to buy a MacBook and all the different specs that I could choose from never really made a difference. The individual influence from my wife played a major role in this purchase. She has never had any problems with her MacBook and pushed that I make the same purchase for my next computer. The social influence was not a major factor in the decision to make the purchase as many of my friends did not own a MacBook. The situational influence played two major factors against the purchase of the MacBook. The software that a MacBook uses is different from Windows that majority of computers use.
  • 7. Library Donation Books This summer I spent hours on the library s third floor, a large area used for storage since the 1970 s; no air conditioning but lots of dust. I sorted through 177 boxes of books that were donated to the library. Library staff are not following the current donation policy and all donated books are given to the Friends BookSale. Many books in my Adult Fiction section are in well loved condition with water damage, broken spines and torn pages. Sorting through the boxes led to the addition of 300 adult fiction titles not owed by the library, example added a new copy of Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. The donationbooks were used to replace 450 loved books with newer copies, example replaced a water damaged, broken spine copy of The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah with a brand new copy. My frustration leads me to search for information about how to handle book donations in a public library. I searched the Library and Information Source link on Clarion s online library page using the term handling gift or donated books . I selected Kay Ann Cassell s article Handling gift books in libraries: A view from the US. Cassell s article provides an overview of guidelines to be used in creating a gift book policy. A gift or donated book policy should be part of the library s Collection Development policy. Library staff are able to follow a policy that explains the purpose of the library s collection, what the library provides, who are library users and what types of materials are
  • 8. Chavez Decided To Nationalize Cargill Essay Chavez decided to nationalize Cargill due to not producing a cheaper rice that is included in price control. Now could of Chavez handle this a different way instead of seizing a plant. Another alternative could have been to impose a hefty fine, similar when companies break laws in the United States. Cargill is a US company and this might be an attempt to not allow profits to be brought back to the US and remain in Venezuela. Cargill said it has complied with all laws and regulations and the plant was manufacturing Parboiled rice at this site for the last 7 years (Fox News, 2009). Chavez is trying to nationalize the country more and more by controlling telecommunications, electricity and food. The government says this is necessary to keep prices affordable and control inflation. Since, Chavez was classified as a dictator he was justified in his actions to do as he pleased.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some benefits from nationalization are increased earnings of the State, employment opportunities, technical efficiency and lower cost of production. On the other hand some disadvantages of nationalization are lack of freedom, lack of spirit of competition and less intervention of public in economic affairs. If I were the executive of Cargill, I would set up a meeting with the government to work on a situation to get my plant back and figure out a plan going forward where both sides are happy. If the negotiations did not go well, I would look into selling the operations in Venezuela to another company and move on from
  • 9. Watching God Symbols The times in which Their Eyes Were Watching God took place were extremely difficult for a black woman to live in let alone find her voice. Zora Neale Hurston uses symbols throughout Their Eyes Were Watching God to explain events, rather than sating them. She interprets many important aspects of life and turns these events into symbols throughout the novel. Hurston uses the horizon and the pear tree as symbols to illustrate, clarify, and intensify abstract concepts in the novel such as Janie s general ambitions and her specific dreams respectively. The horizon represents Janie s life aspirations as well as the possibilities for change and perhaps improvement. Hurston explicates the vitality of recognizing the significance of the horizon (the location of her hopes and dreams) when understanding the plot by mentioning it in the opening paragraph of the novel: Ships at a distance have every man s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men (Hurston 1). Janie s dream lingers on the horizon for the majority of her life; She can wish and hope for better things, but her reality is very different. Since the start, Janie s dreams are restricted by circumstance. Early in her life, Nanny had taken the biggest thing God ever made, the horizon, for no matter how far a person can go

Possible to say that beauty is defined by and to the other, is to surround the child with beauty, truth and goodness order to make the growth of growth of these qualities in its developing self. • 12. The Similarities Between Beethoven And Rachmaninoff Ludwig van Beethoven was a German musician known as one of the few who had a strong influence on classical music. For many, Beethoven is considered the predominant musical composer who formed the bridge between the classical and romantic era. This gave way to romantic composers such as Sergei Rachmaninoff, who is considered one of Russia s finest pianist and romantic composers. Some people may argue that the musical talents of Beethoven cannot be compared to other composers, however, when you compare his personal life with Rachmaninoff; it seems that tragedy had an influence on both their lives. Even though Beethoven and Rachmaninoff lived during different centuries and they came from different countries, they both shared the same passion for creating beautiful music despite the hardships in life. Although some of the differences between Beethoven and Rachmaninoff are evident, the similarities are pronounced. Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn Germany on December 16, 1770 and he died on March 26, 1827 at the young age of 56 from pneumonia complicated by cirrhosis of the liver and dropsy. In the book The Gift of Music Great Composers and Their Influence by Jane Smith and Betty Carlson, Beethoven was described as a short, stout man with a very red faced, small piercing eyes, and bushy eyebrows (56). On the contrary, Rachmaninoff was described as a tall man who didn t fit quite fit in. He measured at 6 6 and his giant hands could strike 13 on the keyboard.
  • 13. Barring Greenback, Long Kiwi Dollar Against Major Peers The New Zealand Dollar (NZD), also known as the Kiwi, was one of the best performers last year. As show in the chart below, the currency gained 20.48% and 13.60%, respectively, against the Japanese Yen (JPY) and the Australian Dollar (AUD). Needless to say, gaining against the US Dollar (USD) was as uncommon thought last year as it is this year, in view of the Fed s stimulus taper and imminent interest rate hike. So barring Greenback, below are a few arguments supporting the bullish case for Kiwi. Faster growth There s no denying that New Zealand s economy was nothing short of impressive last year. The economy held out against the worst drought in decades, fiscal consolidation, a contamination scare, a strong currency and, to top it all, a slowdown in its two most important trade partners, viz. Australia and China. Although each of these factors posed a significant risk to growth, the resilient economy overcame these challenges and is growing at its fastest pace since 2009. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) sees gross domestic product expanding by 3.3% in the fiscal year that ended March 31, faster than its December projection of 2.7%. The economy is then expected to expand 3.2% in the year through March 2015. The growth has been primarily driven by recovery in various important industries of New Zealand. The farm production surged on drought recovery, while the nation also benefitted from major building and infrastructure projects following the 2011 Christchurch
  • 14. Cultural And Political Causes Of The Darfur Genocide In Sudan INTRODUCTION Genocide is defined as the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group. The Darfur Genocide refers to the current mass slaughter and rape of men, women, and children in Western Sudan (Mitchell Hamline School of Law). Not only are these atrocities happening, but the Darfurians are being force from their land and into refugee camps, mainly in the country Chad, but also other countries like Ethiopia or Kenya. Darfur genocide causes can be found both culturally and politically. The cultural and political causes come from the same source of that being an underdeveloped country with no effective government protecting the rights of the Darfurians. Darfurians were violently pushed around, physically and mentally, with the western world not stepping in to assist. Although eventually, both Britain and the United Nations came to the same conclusion that the atrocities occurring in Darfur were genocide and one of the world s worst humanitarian crises (Thomson Reuters). Genocide occurred in Sudan in the Darfur region starting in 2003 and continues today. The long standing divide between Arab herding tribes and the African farming tribes and the political opportunism arising from the environmental calamity led to the genocide in Sudan. CAUSES a.Political Cause. Politically, Darfur genocide is rooted in the government s role of funding, Janjaweed or devils on horseback, who destroyed the Darfurians by burning villages, looting

When there was an issue in the supply chain, people were pulled from their existing jobs to fix the issue. Once the problem was solved, the people would go back to their original tasks. It became obvious that observing the route of goods using pins on a map would no longer make the cut. Technology has crept into SCM slowly, starting with electronic invoicing, computerized shipping and tracking as well as automated notifications that were progressively used by companies like FedEx and UPS. Initially intended for business to business interactions, it took time before that level of tracking and accountability was provided to consumers. But it became quite clear that notifying everyone along the chain has become increasingly important. It was only when companies like Zappos which positioned itself to be customer friendly, by creating a tagline Powered by Service, came into limelight that clients got a flavor of how they have a huge role to play in purchases. Zappos as on online company, did not start with brick and mortar stores, so instead of adapting to new technology, they were embraced by it. The fact that the consumers get notified at every step of the process is what makes them love the experience. Before deciding to make the purchase, extensive reviews can be read to make an informed decision, they can also have a check on the mother brand. This set the benchmark for online customer service; firm that could match up to this standard gain a competitive advantage. While religion may appear to be a peaceful endeavor, it is an endless source of violence and bloodshed. The duality of religion is accurately portrayed in the Christian crusades. Europe was described almost as a confinement surrounded by mountain peaks to which the solution to their problem cannot be found. Since the only land available was in possession of other Christian nations, it was impossible to maintain peace. Thus the solution, since land and wealth would ultimately lead to European conflict; a war against an alien enemy seemed a logical conclusion. Through the excuse of foreign aid, Christendom could extend both its wealth and land without civil war at the expense of Muslims . Without the proper intake of water, the body becomes dehydrated and it begins to pull it from other places including from your blood. This causes the closing of some smaller vessels (capillaries), making your blood thicker, more susceptible to clotting, and harder to pump through your system. This can have serious implications in hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Recent studies have also linked the lack of water to headaches, arthritis, and heartburn. Sodium exists outside the cell and concentrated potassium exists inside the cell. When nerve cells are stimulated, sodium passes into the cell and a negative electrical charge is created. The electrical travels to a muscle cell which causes the muscle to contract. To maintain healthy intracellular charges, muscle contraction and fluid balance, a diet high in potassium is highly recommended. Fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, beans, whole milk and meat can help achieve a potassium rich diet. Sodium and chloride react together in blood cells which trigger a sodium concentration. This concentration causes sensations of thirst in the body and causes us to drink. Within 24 hours, the sodium and excess water is secreted and the body is returned to its normal state. A diet high in sodium and chloride can lead to hypertension and decreased kidney and heart function. (The effects of dehydration) Caffiene should be drank in moderation. Through the movie, we see that morals are violated left and right. For example, Patrick Kenzie would go to drastic measures to ensure Amanda got back safely to her mom. Another moralityissue visible in Gone Baby Gone is the fact that Lionel knowingly sabotaged his family. A final morality issue in the movie was Patrick Kenzie, the main character, was involved in a lot of corrupt activities, which can be agreed on being morally wrong. The decisions he makes violate many moral standards, but he ensured that he would do anything to save Amanda. One of the first scenes of the movie that showed Patrick s immoral side was when he was in the bar snooping for information on Helene, Amanda s mother. He got himself into an argument with the bar owner and the bars customers. As things started getting heated, Patrick drew his gun and threatened each individual with it. Some of the first areas of plot seen in the movie are the protagonist and the antagonist. As described by Greg Johnson and Thomas R. Arp, the protagonist is the central character in a conflict (98) and the antagonist is any force arranged against the protagonist (98). Most seem to think that the protagonist has heroic qualities, but as said by Johnson and Arp, this is often not true (98). Conflict can be defined as a clash of actions, ideas, desires, or wills (Johnson, Arp 98). Conflict is derived from the existence of a protagonist and an antagonist, so because Cady is the protagonist and Regina is the antagonist, the primary conflict in the film is character versus character. It is this conflict that helps support the theme. For example, conflict is noticeable through Regina and Cady s changes at the end of the film. Even after Cady had tried everything she could to ruin Regina s life, and Regina had tried everything to make Cady jealous, both still forgave each other as they went their separate ways. The audience can understand that the two girls forgave each other based on when Cady says, all of the drama from last year just wasn t important anymore (Waters) at the end of the film. By saying this, the viewers recognize that Cady is stating that the two girls had finally forgiven one another. This evidence helps to support the theme because even though Cady did terrible things to Regina, and Regina did terrible things to Cady, they still learned to forgive one another. The evidence also helps to provide a theme for the audience that is meaningful and important. Through this description, the audience gets an idea of the theme s place in the story, and how it is meant to teach society to

By overcoming difficulties such as upholding Uruk, becoming friends with Enkidu, and various other scenarios, Gilgamesh proves that he did in fact grow up throughout the epic. As the epic starts, Gilgamesh is portrayed as a self centered, self admiring leader who believes that he is the only individual that can lead the city of Uruk. Gilgamesh believes that he is a god like figure and often refers to himself as one. He believes that he is above everyone else in the city of Uruk. For example, in the epic there is a scene where Gilgamesh enters the city of Uruk, the epic describes the scene as; He entered the city of Uruk the Town Square, and a crowd gathered around. He came to a halt in the street of Uruk the Town Square, all gathered about, the people discussed him (15). This quote is a good example of how Gilgamesh expected those around him to respect and look up to him as a god like figure. He did not lead the city of Uruk humbly; he wasn t a leader who strived to feel like a normal citizen of the city. Instead, Gilgamesh felt that he was entitled to more privileges than the average person. Early on in the epic, Gilgamesh is described as a tall, magnificent and terrible, who opened passes in the mountains, who dug wells on the slopes of the uplands, and crosses the ocean, the wide sea to the sunrise (2). This demonstrates how selfish Gilgamesh truly was, and how all

Berman remarks how designers have a disproportionately large influence in these three areas: 1.How messages intended to influence the behavior of large audiences are selected, crafted, and delivered 2.How people are portrayed and represented visually 3.How raw materials for designed objects are consumed (99). It will consider the influence and power designer possess, the negative outcomes of bad communication, and how designers can do good. Although it s true that logos incorporate an influence and a branded personality, there is a trouble in finding a multicultural common ground. According to Conroy, people still value [their] cultural roots so it would be unwise to suppose that all interpretations are going to be correct. Claiming that graphic designers can create a global language through graphic imagery and typography is a bold statement. Since it takes a sender and a receiver to communicate, we must acknowledge that although the designer potentially has [influential] power, it depends on the viewer/audience to give up some kind of control (Mazutinec). Therefore, Berman refers to Adbusters magazine founder Kalle Lasn who implies we are only in part responsible by claiming, that most North Americans can only identify 10 plants, but can recognize 1,000 corporate brands (53). When it comes to software, design can make or break the success of a product. Next, highlighting design standards and design languages and their impact on the world of design is just as important as describing the process designers use to amalgamate digital physics and interaction, in order to engender users with a sense of alluring delight. After that, defining the basic ideas and processes behind designing, from concept to working golden release, are also required to introduce users to the importance of design. In order to help explain various design experiences and concepts, such as using design everyday or as a tool, it can be important to look at a few design languages (in depth guidelines on software physics, motion, and design). The Oxford English Dictionary describes racism as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a group or individual of a different race based on the belief that one s own race is superior . It is significant when concerning oneself with the discussion of racism that a clear and concise distinction is made between the two different types of racism. Firstly there is individual racism. When a black family moves into a new home in a neighbourhood dominated by white people, and their home is consequently vandalised or the subject of arson attacks, it is deemed by people to be intolerable and racist. It is institutional racism when slum landlords and loan sharks pry on the black people trapped in decrepit tenements, and in some cases slums, where they have little chance of escaping their situation due to a system that has predetermined their failure and their second class status. Racism in this form is not kept to countries like the US and Britain, but more to the western world. Society is either ignorant to its existence, unwilling or unable to do anything about it. Stokely Carmichael believes that the resistance towards any action that may permanently stamp out institutionalised racism stems from the fact that western society enjoys its luxury. When I use a word, Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, it means just what I choose it to mean. Neither more nor less . The question is, said Alice, whether you can make words mean so many different things . The question is, said Humpty Dumpty, who is to be master. That is all . This quote comes from Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. Those with the power to define are those with the power to rule. Moving away from the debate about western cultures as being institutionally racist as a whole, there are aspects within these cultures that are racist to their own citizens.

It indeed rings true when said or heard that Rome was not carved out from her seven hills; not built; not fought for nor killed for in a day. Her legacy was painstakingly written with the lives of millions, and the many victories of her army were learned and prepared for through just as many losses. It was not intrinsic ability that conquered all of the Mediterranean coast and lands beyond, but cunning, the ability to adapt when beaten, to recognize superior tactics and to outwit them, to learn from other cultures and militaries, and most importantly, to get back up off the ground when conquered and hit back harder than ever before. • 54. Personal Agression Narrative I immediately shoot the camera s in the corners with the pistol, and run to the huge oak desk. I throw open the drawers, and rip through the contents: paper, candy, documents. No serum. I scan the room hastily, my eyes landing on a set of heavy oak doors. That s got to be where the serum is; it s the only other closed place in the room. I yank the handles, but they re locked. I hear heavy, loud, fast footsteps running down the hallway. My heart begins to race like a hamster on a wheel, my confidence wavers, and I want to vomit. Rosemary, be brave, the world is depending on you, I tell my self. I shake my head, and swallow, pulling out the tranquilizer gun. I d prefer to knock the guards out for a good twenty four hours than to kill them. The door bursts open, and a volley of bullets fly toward me. I notice that there are eight of them. I dive toward the desk,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I sprint to the window, and shimmy down the rope. I hand of my feet, and take of towards the gate. I hear the pop of a gun, and I fall to my knees. I struggle to my feet, and bite my lip to force back a scream. I limp at first, I hear shouts, and more pops behind me. I run hard, like a gazelle trying to evade a tiger. I make it to the gate, and turn around, my back pressing into the metal bars. I fumble with the tranquilizer gun, hiding it behind me. The guards rush toward me. I load it and fire at them. They fall like raindrops. I turn my back to their motionless bodies, and ascend up the gate. My pant leg snagging on a spike, I rip it free, leaving a gaping hole, and sprint across the street. I stop as I pass a trash bin, and I remove the vial from my bag. I pour the serum into the bin, and toss the glass vial in, I hear it shatter. I look up at the sky, and the sun is beginning to rise. I press the button on the watch that will alert Eliza that I have completed the mission, and will tell her my
  • 55. Godfather Epilogue Thank you for coming on such short notice, Father. a weary voice said as the door opened. He had thinning grey hair, a scruffy beard, and looked downright distraught. No worries, my good sir, he replied, removing his coat and hat. I m just here to do the Lord s work, as he has commanded of all us righteous people. Both men made their way to the upstairs bedroom, which was guarded by the man s two sons, a pair of identical twins. They were also quite shaken up, much like their father. Oh, thank goodness! they exclaimed. Boys, I think we can save your mother, the man started. Father... err, what s your name again? Father Richard Moore, but many just refer to me as Father Richard. the priest said calmly. I m Theodore, and these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But you re in that getup, and was acting all holy and stuff! Timothy said, pointing at Richard. Why are you impersonating a priest anyway? Theodore asked. Well, it was easy money, Richard started. Blow into town claiming to be an emissary of God, and people will look up to you and expect so much out of you. The demon laughed in response to Richard s sob story. Oh, please! I m expected to believe that an idiot like you would ve been able to pass yourself off as a priest? it said. Hey, all the people I performed exorcisms for were gullible, and I didn t feel guilty at all for conniving them out of their money! Richard responded. Wow, the demon responded. I know I m a demon, but I m pretty sure that s downright evil. Like you have a say in this whole debacle! You re possessing someone! Yeah, but it s what I do. You re something that you re not supposed to be. Theodore and his boys were still frozen in complete dumbfoundedness. Whatever, Richard said, picking himself off the ground. I m out of here. Richard grabbed his hat and coat, bid the family a good day, and promptly high tailed it out of the area. Theodore gave chase, but not for long. Damn priest got away. he said,

  • 57. The Kenyon Commencement Speech By David Foster Wallace I believe that existence is comprised of hundreds and millions of different realities intermingling and colliding into one another. I also believe that at the center of each reality there lies the individual who crafted it. Our perception of what is real and false exists solely in our own minds, and our minds are what determines the lense in which we perceive the world. Our perception is largely influenced by our psyche; how we live and think stems from our perception of the world. Our brains are directly influenced by a number of key factors, including but not limited to; societal connotations, individual experience, instinctual desires, environmental factors, and cognitive thought. These factors, as well as other conditions, are what determine our default setting. In his noteable This is Water speech, given at the 2005 Kenyon Commencement Address, David Foster Wallaceargues a similar idea as he explains his take on the phrase teaching you how to think . Through his use of relatable parables and anecdotes and repetition and reverent focus of words like choice and awareness he paints a livid picture of the use of conscious choice in our daily lives. He stresses the concept of a self centered default setting that comes from an individual s blind certainty and the repercussions that deferring to that default can have on an individual s lifestyle and fulfilment. If we are unable to recognise the water in which we dwell we will always remain unaware, stuck in an
