Pro Doping in Sports Debate
Health Risk If each of us ought to be free to assume risks that we think are worth taking, shouldn t
athletes have the same freedom as anyone else? In particular, if athletes prefer the gains in
performance allegedly provided by the use of steroids, along with the increased risk of harm to the
alternative of less risk and worse performance, what gives anyone the right to interfere with their
choice? After all, if we should not forbid smokers from risking their health by smoking, why should
we prohibit track stars or weightlifters from taking risks with their health in pursuit of their goals?

Legalization of the use of drugs in sport might even have some advantages. The boundary between the
therapeutic and ergogenic i.e., performance enhancing use of drugs is blurred at present and poses
difficult questions for the controlling bodies of anti doping practice and for sports doctors. The anti
doping rules often
lead to complicated and costly administrative and medical follow up to ascertain whether drugs
taken by athletes are legitimate therapeutic agents or illicit. Furthermore, legalization of doping, we
believe, would encourage more sensible, informed use of drugs in amateur sport, leading to an overall
decline in the rate of health problems associated with doping. Finally, by allowing medically
supervised doping, the drugs used could be assessed for a clearer view of what is dangerous and what
is not... Acknowledging the importance of rules in sports, which might include the prohibition of
doping, is, in itself, not problematic. However, a problem arises when the application of these rules is
beset with diminishing returns: escalating costs and questionable effectiveness. Bengt Kayser, MD,

The Social Sciences Essay
The Hawthorne Studies is one of the most well known series of experiments of the social sciences in
industrial history. The objective of the experiments were to establish how an individual is influenced
not only by their own abilities, but by their working environment and the people they work with, both
fellow workers and supervisors. To gain a better understanding of what the Hawthorne studies were,
why they were conducted, and how they have impacted management practices, one must first
understand the history behind the key contributors of this study and the location where the studies
took place, the Western Electric Company. However, the studies did receive criticism, some of which
was considered fairly harsh, such as from Alex Carey The Hawthorne studies were conducted by
Harvard s Business School Industrial Research Group, George Elton Mayo, and Fritz J.
Roethlisberger. These two men were major contributors to what we know as the Hawthorne Effect,
and their contributions to this experiment has set forth unprecedented changes in the way
organizations run.
Fritz Roethlisberger was born in NYC in 1898 and earned a BA in engineering from Columbia
University, BS in engineering administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a
MA in philosophy from Harvard University. Roethlisberger started work on his PhD in philosophy at
Harvard University but never finished. His studies were put on hold after meeting Harvard professor

The Discovery Of Sun Falcon
Sun Falcon was celebrated by lots of ancient Americans. He was buried in Cahokia during rituals by
the Cahokians. He was buried looking up toward the live giving sunlight. Falcon was buried in the
mound with 207 other people. Archaeologists were attracted to Cahokia because of the many earthen
mounds that were built in the region by ancient Americans. Monks Mound was known as the largest
single structure that was created by ancient North Americans. Artifacts are studied by both historians
and archaeologists. Physical objects are what archaeologists focus on, while historians focus on things
like writings. In Central America, China, and Egypt, writing derived between the ancient peoples in
these places around 8,000 years ago. The ancient people who were alive during the time of the
millennia, didn t work with writing to interact across time and space, the way we did. They created a
variety of different spoken languages. Since these ancient people did not work with writing, this made
an obstacle for the archaeologists; who had to create artifacts to help with their studies. They did all
they could do, except ignore what can t be ignored: ancient Americans past events. In the Western
Hemisphere, the very first people to appear departed from Asia. Large mammals were hunted down,
like mammoths by the first Americans. Asia and Europe is where they learned to how kill them. They

Semiautomatic Firearms
A Gun Is A Gun Is A Gun Right?
You have seen the articles, the top 20 firearms all Preppers need, or the five best self defense
handguns, or here is a list of the best rifles or shotguns for home defense and the lists go on.
Confusing, and you probably did not learn anything, and you may feel somewhat slighted, because
you do not have any of the guns that the so called expert was stating emphatically that you need.
It is not the firearm, but the person using it, and then the reason that person wants a firearm that is the
deciding factor. Let s face it; any firearm that can put a round downrange is better than throwing a
lamp at someone. Do you know how to decide?
From a purely mechanical and technological standpoint, today s semiautomatic pistols are superior.
Not too long ago if someone mentioned handguns you automatically thought revolver. The ever
steadfast revolver, while they differ somewhat, the mechanics have remained the same throughout the

There is a reason however, why most militaries around the world carry semiautomatic pistols and not
revolvers and many in law enforcement carry them as well.
Keep in mind some semiautomatics are Double Action (DA) and Single Action (SA). Once a round is
chambered from the slide action, the hammer is back. From this point you can de cock it to make it
double action or leave the hammer back for single action. After the first round subsequent shots are of
course single action, because the slide is forced back to eject a shell cocking the firearm each time.
The revolver is not going anywhere, because people grew up with them, it may have been for many
their first handgun that was handed down. They do have advantages over semiautomatics and there are
disadvantages as well. You do not have to choose, because you can have both as long as you become
proficient in their use. You do have to consider who will be using the weapon and who may have
access to the weapon as

1. Research some economics concepts regarding the value of labor. How do the business cycles and
the health of the economy affect the value of your labor? In terms of supply and demand, what are the
optimal conditions in which to sell your labor? How might further education increase your mobility in
the labor market (the value of your labor)?
a. When the value of labor is down, the economy is down. When the events from the world begin to
change (recession), than the balance between supply and demand change. Sometimes demand and
supply change so much that one or the other cannot keep up with the other. Whatever happens
between supply and demand, us as buyers and sellers react, than overall this ... Show more content on

3. Examine your budget and distinguish between wants and needs. How do you define a financial
need? What are your fixed expenses, or costs you must pay regularly each week, month or year?
Which of your budget categories must your provide for first before satisfying others? To what extent is
each of your expenses discretionary under your control in terms of spending more or less for that item
or resource? Which of your expenses could you reduce if you had to or wanted to for any reason?
a. A financial need is something that you cannot live without. For example a financial need for me is
food. I need food to survive. Another financial need for me would be paying rent. I need a stable place
to live, because being stable will ensure more in my future. I must provide to my living category first.
This includes rent, food, and utilities. Without these I wouldn t be stable enough for a job, which with
no job I will not have a budget. I try to save money, so when it comes to wants, I try my hardest not to
purchase them. If I could reduce one of my expenses it would be probable be the amount I pay on my
utilities. I could try to reduce them in the household, which will reduce the price that I owe.

Tom Szaky, Chief Executive And Founder Of Terracycle
Read the following article in which Tom Szaky, chief executive and founder of TerraCycle, explains
how he makes money from other people s rubbish, and why he s worn the same pair of jeans for a

Imagine he has hired you as Vice President of Sales. Now answer these questions as completely as you
can:
1) How do you imagine the concepts of anagnorisis and peripeteia might work in this example? (1
point)
Peripeteia means a turning point or a reversal moment, while anagnorisis means a point where a
person becomes aware of his or her true nature. Tom is in turning point of his life because turning a
waste into something else is not what majority people would think of, most of us will be disgusted by
only thinking about the concept. However not for Tom, he is actually passionate in the ecological
concept and his belief of doing good and making good money at the same time, which is what
anagnorisis means. Just like the pig farmers who gathered all the wastes from big casinos in Las
Vegas, and fed his pigs with very nutritious food that eventually double size them, Tom could do the
same! Tom could utilize the waste and turn it into something profitable. He has to believe in himself
and just like Jared says, as long as you like what you re doing, people will be drawn into that
positivity. He needs to be brave because this is not what majority of people could think of, or even
brave enough to do, so he should be the stand out one and

American Beauty By Sam Mendes
American Beauty (1999) is directed by Sam Mendes (also the director of Skyfall and Spectre) and
stars Kevin Spacey which examines the ordinary occurances of a family who live a desirable life but
are unhappy and stagnant. Kevin Spacey plays the role of Lester Burnham, a suburban father and who
is tired of his boring job and family. Within the film are many themes, the most important of these
being lust and beauty. The film applies many visual effects to demonstrate the overall desired tone,
and helps to implicitly present a false sense of the american dream . American Beauty demonstrates a
clear presentation of longing within relationships or lifestyles, and uses filming techniques to imply
these hidden themes.
The main theme demonstrated throughout the film is seeming, and how it relates to true nature. Each
character within the film shows an awareness of the struggles seeming brings, and eventually
confronts it. Carolyn is the prime example, as constantly within the film she struggles to progress
within her career and attempts to be happy in doing so. This is shown in the scene where she attempts
to sell a house, fails to do so, and physically abuses herself as punishment. Colonel Fitts (Ricky s
father) also struggles with appearance, as he constantly tells Ricky homosexuality is disgusting, and
nearing the end of the film we find Fitts is homosexual himself. This challenges his interpretation of
masculinity and what he has believed his entire life. A huge element

Mr. Arend Lljphart Is An Author Of A Book Called Patterns...
Mr. Arend Lljphart is an author of a book called Patterns of Democracy. The book examines the forms
and performance of governments in thirty six countries. Patterns of Democracy is seventeen chapters
long. Below, there will be a critical analysis of a claim or a particular theory in the first seven chapters
on the merits of the claim or theory.
To start with, chapter one is an introduction to what is to come. It claims that two models of governing
the majoritarian model and the consensus model exist. In a majoritarian model, a governing body will
seek to satisfy a will of a bare majority or even a will of a plurality of a governed body. Alternatively,
in a consensus model, a governing body will seek to form a consensus to fulfill the wishes of as many
people as possible. Even in a democracy, it is possible for a government to listen to the wishes of a
minority while ignoring the will of the majority and attempt to convince the majority that the minority
has a point here.
Secondly, the title of the next chapter of the book is the Westminster model of democracy. As the
author noted, this is another name of the majoritarian model. It is unclear why the author felt a need to
dedicate a chapter to this. That said, he effectively gives three countries that fit this group.
Furthermore, the author listed ten characteristics of the model and how England, New Zealand, and
Barbados comply and deviate from the model as well as any qualification that needs to occur in the
group.

Psychoactive Drugs Alter Consciousness Essay
Awareness of your body as well as the environment is known as consciousness. Psychoactive drugs
alters your consciousness by affecting your perceptions, sensation, attention, judgment, memory, self
control, emotions, thinking, and behaviors. Three psychoactive drugs are depressants, stimulates, and
hallucinogens. Depressants lower your body s basic activities functions and neural activities.
Stimulates intensify neural activities and the central nervous system. Lastly hallucinogens are
sensations that are not really there. Depressants depress activity in the central nervous system.
Depressants lowers your body basic functions as well as your neural activities. Alcohol a conscious
altering drug slows down neural processing, disturbs REM sleep which is one of the five stages of
sleep. Alcohol also lowers your heart rate, reaction time, as well as your ability to form memories.

Hallucinogens alters moods and distorts perception, and thoughts. Ecstasy is a stimulate as well a

has an damaging impact on serotonin neurotransmitters. It also changes your perception and sensation.
When using psychoactive drugs there are a lot of things that can go wrong. Such as addiction which is
explained as physiological dependence. Your body can adjust to the amount of the drug you are taking
which can cause your body to crave more which is you tolerance. Trying to refrain from using any
drug you will experience withdrawal which is when your body s need for a drug. When you go
through withdrawal you have symptoms like headaches, fatigue, sweating, hallucinations, restlessness,
severe tremors, and

Transfer Pricing Is An Internal Practice
Transfer pricing is an internal practice within an MNE and thus it is insulated against the open market
forces of demand and supply. In competitive open markets, the forces of demand and supply would
interact to determine the price at which goods and services are transferred. While these forces could
have an impact on transfer pricing from a macro perspective, their impact on intra group pricing can
be limited.
Larry J. Merville and J. William Perry (1978) identified the various items that affect the setting of
transfer prices to include methods and rates of income taxation, quotas and duties on importation of
materials, restrictions on flow of capital, currency regulations and the preferences of management of
an MNE for risk avoidance through consideration of the risks associated with the fluctuation of
foreign currency exchange rates, rates of inflation and the risk of nationalisation. Managerial reward
and control is another item that is considered and often plays a significant role in transfer pricing
(Merville and Petty, 1978). Some of these items often lead to conflicting goals and objectives that an
MNE has to deal with. This section analyses the issue of transfer pricing in light of these
considerations. Theoretical framework / conceptual framework Optimal intra firm pricing
Hirshleifer (1956) poses that in order to obtain optimal intra firm pricing; the transfer price must be
equal to the marginal cost of the affiliates producing goods in conditions of

but cannot seem to connect with or have sympathy towards anyone else. He is talented in all manners
of deception, and able to think on his feet. While reading most often people will look at Tom s
behavior and see only the negativity. Radway uses Tom to show us a more sensitive side of the a male
figure and how they battle with experiences that has effective them drastically. In Tom s case he is not

those around him. I will argue that Tom s background and his history has shaped his character and his

Symbolism And Imagery In Raymond Chandler s The Big Sleep
In this essay, I will focus on Raymond Chandler s The Big Sleep. I will try to analyze the symbolism
and imagery of Los Angels in this Raymond Chandler s fiction. The Big Sleep talks about a dying
millionaire General Sternwood hires Philip Marlowe (private detective) to handle the blackmailer of
Carmen Sternwood, one of his wild daughters. With further investigation, Marlowe finds himself
involved with more than extortion. The Big Sleep is Raymond Chandler s first novel. It has been
recognized as a landmark in the history of the American hard boiled detective novel. It was published
in 1939. At that time, the Great Depression was raging and World War II was coming. The Big Sleep
is set in 1930s Los Angeles and Hollywood. Los Angeles serves as the setting for most of Chandler s
novels. Probably no writer has evoked images of Los Angeles for more readers than Raymond
Chandler. David Fine points out Raymond Chandler makes Los Angeles becomes the permanent home
of hard boiled detective fiction (1). In this novel, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

can find jam packed with corrupt policemen, double crossing women, shady blackmailers, and

Jameson points out that Chandler uses the plot device of Marlowe waiting in his office as a monadic
window from which something of the deeper truth of Los Angeles is able to be disclosed (3). Los
Angeles is about to be seen through a perceptual window, the consciousness of Marlowe, whose
sensitivity indicates the nature of the world around him. Marlowe s retreat into his shabby office also
contains symbolic significance:he takes shelter from the chaotic society outside. However, his office is
also loaded with the endemic nothingness. He discloses a profound truth about American life around

Procrastination Essay
Curing ProcrastinationFive
While it is not a life changing syndrome; that is, a diagnosis found in , procrastination is still
pernicious, psychologically. It can create mild symptoms or some that are chronic, even debilitating.
Regardless, procrastination is something that can be played with.
Procrastination is really a form of ambivalence. This is not widely accepted. Ambivalence is when part
of you wants something and part of your doesn t want that something. It doesn t have to be two things
that directly collide. One of the somethings can be related to the other, just not the same, requiring a
choice that is, at least partially, mutually exclusive. Ambivalence can be in our awareness, partially in
awareness or totally out of awareness. This doesn t matter, because the subjective experience of it is
anxiety. This ambivalence aspect actually creates anxiety, but it is of the kind that is not usually
related with other clinical syndromes, proper.
Procrastination happens when these conflicts occur in our lives and we don t want to negotiate them.
For example, I m supposed to finish a paper for school but I want to play video games. I ll think about
the former but want to do the later. The choices are about two things that are relatively mutually ...

Mayor Of Casterbridge By Michael Farfrae Analysis
The Resentment and Downfall of an Antihero In the mid 1800s, Michael Henchard and his wife
Susan, who carried their daughter Elizabeth Jane, were walking down a path seeking a place to lodge
for the evening. Stopping at a county fair tent, the family decided to eat furmity, Michael Henchard
(who possessed a quick temper and a drinking problem at the time) decided to slide the cook extra
money to spike his meal. After this point, the situation rapidly got out of hand and Michael Henchard
sold his wife and child to a sailor for five guineas. This was the shocking first scene in Thomas Hardy
s novel, Mayor of Casterbridge, published in 1886. To proceed with the story and jump ahead almost
two decades, Susan and Elizabeth Jane sought out Henchard (since the sailor was lost at sea and
believed to never return) in the town of Casterbridge, where they discovered that he was Mayor. From
this point on, the husband and wife reconciled their differences, married again, and started new
beginnings together. However, things took a turn for the worse ever since the two women materialized
back into Henchard s life. Throughout the novel, Donald Farfrae, a man Michael requested assistance
from, availed in every aspect over Mr. Henchard, causing a expeditious downfall to the latter. Their
differences included love, success, popularity, fortune, and authority. However, Farfrae was not the
cause of Michael s misfortune, in fact Donald was noble in all of his affairs. Michael Henchard was

The great San Francisco Earthquake was a very deadly earthquake that occurred on April 18, 1906 at

Dehumanizing Death Penalty
The death penalty is proven to not deter criminals from committing a crime punishable by death.
There are many arguments on whether the death penalty should be legal, but the debate boils down to
personal morals. The death penalty is immoral. Criminals will act on their drive, with no thoughts
about future consequences. The death penalty not only hurts the criminal, but it affects the criminal s
family. The family already had to experience what it felt like to see a loved one take an innocent
person s life. This causes emotional unnecessary emotional distress for the family and those close to
the person on death row. Murdering the criminal will only put the family through even more
unnecessary trauma. Furthermore, humans are not pets. The human race should not be able to put
others down in the sense of death. It is dehumanizing for the person sentenced to death and the
executioner. There should not be a job in the United States where, in the job description, it states that

that usually does not happen. Innocent people can be wrongly convicted and executed. Mental

there the rhea jumped high, higher than anything had ever jumped, and started climbing the sky. It is

Long before Life reached Earth, the Stars were discussing among themselves. They all wanted their
own space, and to remain close to each other. Many wanted to watch Life grow in it s more primitive,
small form. Many stars went far away to to other galaxies, both cold and lonely and soon to be full of

Ferrari Research Paper
To begin with, in Italy in 1929 there was a car model created by the italians which was called the
¨Ferrari¨ and was created for men to race their cars back then on the track. In addition, in Germany in
1931 the ¨Porsche¨ model was created germans for the purpose of racing on the track also but was
created by a man named Ferdinand Porsche which loved cars as a kid and grew up working on
volkswagens which lead to his idea of the porsche. So, they were both created for racing purposes but
the history of the men who made them is not similar because they lived in different countries with
different cultures and ideas.
To continue, the mileage of both models are good but are very different from each other. The Ferrari

However, since the Porsche is listed and priced at a lower price it s faster to build but still takes a
week for the assembly line to make and then a few days to paint. After, they then have to ship the car
to whomever is buying it across seas or not which could take up to weeks depending on where you
live. Unlike the Porsche, the Ferrari takes 3 weeks to a month to build and create because of the high
suspenseful details, parts, and performance put into this sports car. Then, not only may it take a month
to create but according to 2015s Ferraris Website, the waiting list for a Ferrari is 2 years long and now
days may be longer basically means that if you even had enough money to purchase one you would
have to wait for yours to be built in shipped to you and that would take years. So there are many pros
and cons for the two models but the next characteristic is what will make you decide what model is

Jerry Bock s Fiddler On The Roof
Fiddler on the roof Fiddler on the Roof is a musical by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and
book by Joseph Stein, set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters. The story
centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish
religious traditions while outside influences intrude upon their lives. He must cope with both the
strong willed actions of his three older daughters each one s choice of husband moves further away
from the customs of her faith and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village. I
want to talk about a few of my favorite scenes. When Tevye invites Perchick to stay with them, the

Lazar Wolf the wealthy butcher, wants to wed Tzeitel, their eldest daughter. Tevye must be persuaded
to meet Lazar to arrange the marriage. The two middle daughters, Hodel and Chava, speculate
excitedly about what their mother and the matchmaker were talking about, but Tzeitel warns them not

Tim Burton And Edward Scissorhands
As time has progressed in the same regard so has film, the cinema styles we see today contain modern
film techniques and state of the art cinema equipment, however elementally they all draw influences
from film eras of their past. Many established current day film directors have done an in depth
analysis of past film movements and often incorporate those elements in their films. Tim Burton, one
of the most esteemed directors of our time has done extensive studies particularly on films from the
German Expressionism era and often incorporates those influences as seen in his 1990 blockbuster,
Edward Scissorhands. Metropolis, in particular, regarded as one of the greatest films from the German
Expressionism era, showcases aspects of this era that Tim Burton s film directly derives from,
everything from the generally dark visuals to the development of setting and storyline. In viewing
both films and examining them side by side, it is quite clear Edward Scissorhands contains many
modern day film styles, however at the same time draws numerous influences from Metropolis and
from the German Expressionism era in general. The most astounding aspect of the German
Expressionism era is the influences it has made in films that were made far past its prime. At any point
in history films and directors incorporate clear influences from past cinematic eras, films such as
Edward Scissorhands included modern day film styles while drawing key characteristic influences
from films like Metropolis

The Ethics of Cadaveric Organs for Transplantation

The Ethics of Cadaveric Organs for Transplantation
Brianne Vought
HAS 545.01 Ethics and Health Care
Advancements in medicine have allowed for the ability to transplant organs from a cadaver to a living
patient. Immunosuppressive drugs have been developed to block the bodily rejection of organs from
the deceased making transplantation possible. When an individual dies The Uniform Anatomical Gift
Act allows for tissue and organs of the cadaver to be used for transplantation (Garrett, Baillie, amp;

In the majority of the religious groups, as long as due respect is shown to the body, cadaver organ
transplants are not forbidden (Garrett, Baillie, amp; Garrett, 2001). But in some cultures death is not
the end of the soul and that the life of the body can be restored.
Most families still refuse to donate the organs of their dying relatives despite all efforts made to
increase donations. Harvesting may be thought of as violating the sanctity of the body. Donation may
involve unwarranted mutilation of the body and so disrespect for the dignity of the human body
(Garrett, Baillie, amp; Garrett, 2001). Individuals are urged to sign an organ donor card with little or
no awareness of what that action can mean. How the death is determined may weigh in on the decision
to donate. The potential recipient is rarely known, because tissue and compatibility tests must be done.
There is always less ethical force in an unnamed potential person that a living identifiable one. The
horror stories that make the headlines also deter consent for donation. The few illegal harvesting
accusations which are published in newspapers and documented on television deter individuals from
donating and allow them to see denial of consent as the barrier to exploitation and harm. There is also
a fear that the organ donor may not actually be dead but declared dead prematurely so that the vital
organs can be taken to benefit another human being. The Uniform

Understanding The Consciousness Of The People Of London At...
Tracking the culture of a society has always proven to be a challenge. Historians and archeologists
may study artifacts, books, poetry, among other cultural legacies in an attempt to understand the
beliefs and lives of previous generations. However, this has a certain level of inaccuracy towards the
beliefs of the average person in that society. To speak to that point, I wish to introduce Gilbert and
Sullivan. Gilbert and Sullivan were a pair of opera writers operating in England between 1871 and
1896. Their operas were so immensely popular with the British public that the world s first building lit
entire by lightbulbs, the Savoy Theater, was built for the purpose of housing the premiers of their
operas. It is through this immense popularity with the common people that we can begin to understand
the consciousness of the people of London at the time. In this case, Gilbert and Sullivan s opera,
Utopia Limited, can provide us with a clear picture of the Victorian view on a woman s place in
sports, and information on their beliefs on sports in general.
Sports throughout the Victorian age can be used as a telescope to examine a wide range of issues.
Whether it s the role of women, thoughts on prudery, or a manifestation of romanticism within society,
there is much to learn from sports. This is why Gilbert and Sullivan s second to last Opera, Utopia
Limited, should pique the interest of any sports historian. Throughout Utopia Limited, W.S. Gilbert
outlines the characteristics

Parental Figures In The Power Of One By Bryce Courtenay
Parental figures tend to shape children into the individuals they become later in life. In The Power of
One by Bryce Courtenay, Peekay lacks the traditional parental figure that most people have, and
instead crosses paths with many significant people over the course of the book. This puts Peekay at an
advantage because he is able to see the world through different perspectives, the perspectives of those
who mentored him. He learns from people of all walks of life, which leads to him being unbiased and
open minded. Peekay also is at an advantage because he has to learn to think for himself. His mentors
help him with this, but the lack of a true parent forces him to learn this skill early on and master it by
time is was older. Finally, each of Peekay s mentors have something different to offer, a different key
piece of advice, that give him a set of morals to live by. In the Power of One, the lack of the traditional
parental figure helps further Peekay s maturity and helps him to attain his own power of one. Peekay
is mentored by a variety of people throughout the book, all who come from different backgrounds and
who have different life experiences. Over the course of the book, Peekay is mentored by a mixed
prisoner, a professional boxer, and an old German professor. None of these people have anything in
common except for their love and concern for Peekay, and Peekay respects all of them because that is
what Geel Piet teaches him when he first begins to coach him. If they

In an instant Grandpa s face turned serious, and he proceeded to explain how, when he and Jay had
gotten chosen and sent to Sandia, it had been for specific purposes and training. He told me how
Sandia Base, named after the nearby Sandia Mountains, was the principal nuclear weapons installation
of the United States, and how for twenty five years this top secret base and its secondary installation
(Man z a no Base) had conducted atomic weapons research, development, design, testing, and training
which had gotten started under the Manhattan Project during World War II, and that production,
assembly, and storage of nuclear weapons got done there as well. Jay also explained how Sandia
played a key role in our country s nuclear deterrence capabilities during the Cold War and that,
although there was a lot of public speculation on what actually was going on at Sandia, the military
had designated that the activities at Sandia Base were secret under the Atomic Energy Act.
Grandpa and Jay received level 32 security clearance status, which was the absolute highest level of
security clearance available. That kind of clearance gets limited to only those persons who need access
to classified information for mission accomplishment, and is also called TOP SECRET clearance
involving matters of national security. I also learned that, even after they have left the military,
periodic investigations get conducted every five years of people who have gotten given TOP SECRET

Aristotle Analysis
An examination of Aristotle s critique of the different claims to rule reveals that because of our nature
as political animals, living the good life is most practicable under the regime of the polity. Therefore,
by separating the utopian theory of a regime and the practicable application, Aristotle shows that we
can live in a state where our virtue contributes to the being of the city, and in the process, bring forth
the ultimate goal of the city: achieving happiness through the good life.
By laying out the case for a ruling oligarchy, Aristotle claims the wealthy regard justice in strictly
monetary terms, saying, [oligarchs] think if they are superior in one point, for example in wealth, they
are superior in all (Aristotle 103). In other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the ideal polity, the middle class is the binding glue of moderation among the excess ( the very rich
) and the defect ( the very poor ). It is essential to understand that by applying his ethics to his politics,
Aristotle is claiming that we can find the mean between the god like virtue of his perfect state through
the more practical application of moderation. True, the majority of men who rule in a polity will not
be of the most excellence, but they will be the second best excellence, which is those in possession of
much moderation. By acting as a voice of reason amidst the excessive and defective, the middle can
serve as a barrier against those who would overstep the mean, and therefore act against virtue. This
mean of moderation in cities offers the best chance for the most people to live the good life, as
Aristotle reaffirms when he says, [in cities] moderation and the mean are always best (Aristotle

Similarities Between Islam And Buddhism
Islam and Buddhism
In this paper the purpose is to take two religions, to find similarities and differences between the two.
The two world religions chosen are Islam and Buddhism, to someone just considering religions, they
could be confused, at the surface they could think, that these two religions are so different that one
could not find any substantial, and meaningful similarities. Well that thought is a very insider s view
on the facts and histories of religion. as there are differences in each religion which is what makes
them unique, there are also similarities which are fascinating and which I intend on explaining for the
rest of the length of this paper. In the Buddhism and Islamic tradition, they both speak of a man of
significance. For Buddhism, it s the Buddha, the founder of the Buddhist way of life, their eternal
teacher for some he is called, the man who carved the path for all. For the Islamic people, they have
Muhammed, considered to most in Islamic tradition to be a prophet a messenger sent from god. In the
Islamic culture, it is said that no one could ever succeed Muhammad in his nature and quality as a
prophet. (partridge 397) These two men, in the very broad sense of the word each taught the path that
individuals should take to achieve the goal, and by that made their legacy as some might say as the
founders of their religion. For some Buddhist that goal is the eight fold path or the way to liberation,
this path can often be substituted for just a

An Aggressive Action As Intentional Behavior
The chapter defines an aggressive action as intentional behavior aimed at causing either physical or
psychological pain. More recently, anger violence, and aggression has become part of our day to day
lives. But what are the causes to this increase of human aggression? Why are humans becoming more
numb to others pain and insensitive to their feelings? It s chilling to see how the world around us can
affect our state of mind.
Many scholars have debated on whether aggression is due to biology or our environment. Tomas
Hobbes for example, stated in 1651 that in our natural state, we are brutes and are prone to enforcing
the law. He believed humans have a natural instinct towards aggression. Jean Jacques Rousseau s
disagreed with that viewpoint; she thought that humans were born gentle creatures and that our society
forces aggressive tendencies on us. Although Hobbes and Rousseau seemed to be extremists in their
opinions, I thought both takes on aggression were true. Aggression is due to both biology and the
environment. Studies have proven that aggression is that something that has to be learned. Humans
have developed and adapted so much over time it seems that certain necessities for survival have been
ingrained in us from our ancestors. We have a natural instinct to protect our territory and threats from
the environment can cause us to act both physically and mentally aggressive. A lot of research that s
been collected about human aggression was from chimpanzee and bonobos

Consequences Of Underage Drinking
Underage drinking has been a growing concern among the public. As society idolizes the party life
style, adolescence seem to be more encouraged to join the movement. Because the youth of todays
generations are not aware of the responsibilities that come along with drinking, they are ignorant to
the fact that there are ramification that come along with underage drinking. Though there are factors
that play along with the juvenile party trend, as a community, we must come together and be aware of
the poor results these actions can cause. Underage drinking has become an outrage; its use among
teenagers has consequences such as brain damage, addictiveness, and safety risks. Teenagers can tend
to view alcohol as a conversation starter, helping them loosen up around people; but it can cause harsh
brain damage. In spite the reality that alcohol can affect several parts of the brain while drinking

Compare And Contrast Dracula And Parable Of The Sower
Similarly to Dracula, in Parable of the Sower, Lauren is initially condescended by more dominant
males, including her father, Harry, Bankhole, and Travis. Her religion has not taken full form and she
cannot yet present it in a compelling and coherent manner to convince people to join her community.
She is somewhat fantastical about venturing beyond her housing wall and fully forming her religion.
She literally lives surrounded by walls, symbolizing a cave that shields her from all that the outside
world has to offer. Even if the exterior of the wall only presents her with danger, violence, and a
crumbling society, it is reality and a dangerous reality is safer than the illusion of safety. Once she is
forced to exist and live on her own, she structures Earthseed, her religion, and becomes able to fend
for herself. Parable of the Sower takes place in a dystopian california in the not too distant future. At
first, Lauren resides in the relative safety of a walled community of eleven homes, but her community
is burned to the ground and she is forced to undergo a change. As she enters the real world and leaves
her home, she gains knowledge and knowledge is powerful. Her change is apparent in both her actions
and excerpts from her religion. Lauren exclaims, There has to be more that we can do, a better destiny
that we can shape. Another place. Another way. Something! (151). Here, she haphazardly searches for
something. She cannot even identify what she is looking for. Her desires are unclear and she presents
them immaturely. It is a very youthful manner in trying to solve problems; irrationally looking for
something, anything, to help, but refusing to step back and analyze the situation in a methodical way
to discover what actually needs to be done. She had dreams of moving north, but never actually
implemented or underwent a plan to relocate to a better living condition. Logging accounts of the
annihilation of her neighborhood, lauren writes, Last night, when I escaped from the neighborhood, it
was burning. The houses, the trees, the people: burning (153). She is then forced to escape and
develop a new life. She approaches her trip in a very practical manner, taking note of her funds, food

Smirnov Vodka Empire in The King of Vodka
Although the King of Vodka concerns itself with a different time period and a distant land, the history
of founding and eventual disintegration of the Smirnov Vodka Empire seems resonant in today s
business environment. The famous brand was built in one of the most tumultuous periods in Russian
history, yet the founder had struggled with many of the same business problems we see today.
In 1831, Pyotr A. Smirnov was born to illiterate Russian serfs in a village so remote that walking at
night required clanking metal sticks together to scare off the wolves hidden in the forest. Smirnov
spent his childhood during one of Russia s worst cholera epidemics. However, vodka was his ticket
out of this peasant life. Settling in Moscow during the reforms that began with emancipation, his
genius grassroots marketing popularized his products and established his brand. His life became one
of privilege. His ascent would have continued uninterrupted had it not been for a series of devastating
labor strikes, social uprisings, and a government imposed vodka monopoly. Ultimately, the Smirnov
lost it all, as victims of the Bolshevik revolution and the chaos it unleashed.
Fortunately for Smirnov, his family was ambitious. The success of uncle Grigoriy who made enough
money to buy his own freedom inspired a young Pyotr to move to Moscow and pursue his own
liberation. It was from Grigoriy that Pyotr was inducted into the world of entrepreneurship. Smirnov s
story is one of fierce

Conscientious Objectors
To achieve this historical report I strived to give a factual, accurate, concise and balanced account
using credible references and an unbiased approach to historical events to highlight the following.
Contrary to many peoples perception of For King and Country there are thousands of individuals who
cannot reconcile with their consciences with the taking of human life in the name of Nationalism. The
objection of my report is to raise awareness to the fact that Conscientious Objectors are REAL people
who face severe punishment in various forms including physical, social, phycological and emotional.
It is important to gain an understanding that these conscientious objectors are not objecting as a means
of sedition or indolence but are truly refusing service on the basis of their inner sense of what is

that the game was on thursday but he told his son he would not be in town and he would be on tour so
he would not be able to make it. Another example of him being cold and not caring was when he
kicked Margie and the other two women out the studio after he was just with Margie the day before
practice. He did care that he went to jail for doing drug. The reason I say this is because after he got
out his wife asked was he going to stop and he

My Experience At Woodruff Corporation
Introduction: As I near the 1st anniversary of my career at Woodruff Corporation, I find myself
reflecting on my experiences and accomplishments throughout this first year. What impact have I had
in the company? What have I learned and how have I developed my skills? Will it endure and lead to
better, more efficient, and profitable business practices? Prior to working at this company, I had never
before worked in manufacturing, much less the containers, packages, and materials handling industry.
I had not yet professionally designed for the manufacturing either. Woodruff was giving me an
amazing opportunity to apply my education, learn real world applications, and I was earnest to prove
myself. During my final interview, noting my excitement, my boss to be made me aware that he is in
the midst of projects to improve the business, that the prevailing company culture is resistant to
change, and that it has been an uphill battle trying to sway the company culture towards continuous
improvement. He believes I have that mindset and wants me to promote it throughout the business. I
learned then, and reaffirmed over my time there that it must be done with both patience and
persistence. After hiring me, he asked me to a meeting in his office. The company currently had few
materials for the purpose of training designers new to the industry. He also asked that as I learn the ins
and outs of designing for the industry that I document what I have learned for the purpose of

Critical Role In Crime Statistics
Over centuries there has been a great deal of discussion concerning problems that relate to criminals,
crime, and the in succession of justice in the United States. The desire to have factual information has
been a concern for a long time. According to Hurst (2013:277), the Federal Bureau of Investigation
(FBI) has been keeping track of all crimes in the United States. Crime rates are categorized and stored
in a crime index. The FBI crime Index stores every property and violent crime report in the world. By
utilizing standard definitions and procedures established by national programs the information is
placed in the form of a statistical value to inform citizens of crime rating in their communities.
Criminal statistics has become a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, they also have their limitations and don t procure statistics useful for local crime prevention,
often ignore offenses against children and do not count offenders brought before the criminal justice
system. Problems also lie in interpreting data that is supposed to provide prolific information.
Statistics can be used to make the government look good, to see how successful a police force is and
used by the media to create moral panics. One issue with characterizing the current crime statistics is
the perception about racial groups that affect individuals fears and views of crime ratings.
Another critical problem that plays a role in crime statistics is racial stereotyping. Hurst (2013:277)
suggests that racial stereotyping and fear may affect crime reports which lead to racial profiling.
Consequently, cities have attendance to provide crime rates solely based on misleading bias
information. A big issue when it comes down to stereotyping is that people tend to believe that in a lot
of black areas, the crime rate is affected by high levels of crime. In studying the social consequence of
inequality, evidence has shown that perception is a reality when it comes to socio economic

Deaths From Drunk Driving
When driving down the road two ambulance s fly by with sirens screaming, on down the road the
ambulance s stop along with three fire truck s on the side of the road surrounded by many police
officers, passing by there is a car flipped upside down with another car head on into a tree and white
drapes over top of bodies on the road, through the window there is a man there blowing into a
breathalyzer, the number comes up as .16% this man is drunk and also the the driver of the car that s
flipped. Drunk driving is the cause of this, being under the influence messes up the train of thought of
the brain and messes with eye vision and reaction time. People are going crazy driving drunk around
the world, nobody is good at drinking and driving and never will be. Drunk Driving is a serious
problem in the United States and even all around the world, this needs to come to a stop because
innocent people are losing their lives from idiots driving while under the influence. Drinking and
Driving is when someone decides to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking too many alcoholic
beverages and trying to drive home. This is a serious problem, drinking causes the brain to lose train
of thought and lower reaction time of a human which is well needed while driving an automobile
especially during the night when visibility is low. Each day people driving drunk almost 300,000 times
but fewer than 4,000 are

In particular, if athletes prefer the gains in performance allegedly provided by the use of steroids, along with the increased risk of harm to the alternative of less risk and worse performance, what gives anyone the right to interfere with their choice? After all, if we should not forbid smokers from risking their health by smoking, why should we prohibit track stars or weightlifters from taking risks with their health in pursuit of their goals? Legalization of the use of drugs in sport might even have some advantages. The boundary between the therapeutic and ergogenic i.e., performance enhancing use of drugs is blurred at present and poses difficult questions for the controlling bodies of anti doping practice and for sports doctors. The anti doping rules often lead to complicated and costly administrative and medical follow up to ascertain whether drugs taken by athletes are legitimate therapeutic agents or illicit. Furthermore, legalization of doping, we believe, would encourage more sensible, informed use of drugs in amateur sport, leading to an overall decline in the rate of health problems associated with doping. Finally, by allowing medically supervised doping, the drugs used could be assessed for a clearer view of what is dangerous and what is not... Acknowledging the importance of rules in sports, which might include the prohibition of doping, is, in itself, not problematic. However, a problem arises when the application of these rules is beset with diminishing returns: escalating costs and questionable effectiveness. • 3. The Social Sciences Essay The Hawthorne Studies is one of the most well known series of experiments of the social sciences in industrial history. The objective of the experiments were to establish how an individual is influenced not only by their own abilities, but by their working environment and the people they work with, both fellow workers and supervisors. To gain a better understanding of what the Hawthorne studies were, why they were conducted, and how they have impacted management practices, one must first understand the history behind the key contributors of this study and the location where the studies took place, the Western Electric Company. However, the studies did receive criticism, some of which was considered fairly harsh, such as from Alex Carey The Hawthorne studies were conducted by Harvard s Business School Industrial Research Group, George Elton Mayo, and Fritz J. These two men were major contributors to what we know as the Hawthorne Effect, and their contributions to this experiment has set forth unprecedented changes in the way organizations run. Fritz Roethlisberger was born in NYC in 1898 and earned a BA in engineering from Columbia University, BS in engineering administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a MA in philosophy from Harvard University. Confusing, and you probably did not learn anything, and you may feel somewhat slighted, because you do not have any of the guns that the so called expert was stating emphatically that you need. It is not the firearm, but the person using it, and then the reason that person wants a firearm that is the deciding factor. Let s face it; any firearm that can put a round downrange is better than throwing a lamp at someone. Do you know how to decide? From this point you can de cock it to make it double action or leave the hammer back for single action. After the first round subsequent shots are of course single action, because the slide is forced back to eject a shell cocking the firearm each time. I must provide to my living category first. This includes rent, food, and utilities. Without these I wouldn t be stable enough for a job, which with no job I will not have a budget. American Beauty By Sam Mendes American Beauty (1999) is directed by Sam Mendes (also the director of Skyfall and Spectre) and stars Kevin Spacey which examines the ordinary occurances of a family who live a desirable life but are unhappy and stagnant. Kevin Spacey plays the role of Lester Burnham, a suburban father and who is tired of his boring job and family. Within the film are many themes, the most important of these being lust and beauty. The film applies many visual effects to demonstrate the overall desired tone, and helps to implicitly present a false sense of the american dream . American Beauty demonstrates a clear presentation of longing within relationships or lifestyles, and uses filming techniques to imply these hidden themes. The main theme demonstrated throughout the film is seeming, and how it relates to true nature. Each character within the film shows an awareness of the struggles seeming brings, and eventually confronts it. Carolyn is the prime example, as constantly within the film she struggles to progress within her career and attempts to be happy in doing so. This is shown in the scene where she attempts to sell a house, fails to do so, and physically abuses herself as punishment. Colonel Fitts (Ricky s father) also struggles with appearance, as he constantly tells Ricky homosexuality is disgusting, and nearing the end of the film we find Fitts is homosexual himself. This challenges his interpretation of masculinity and what he has believed his entire life. A huge element ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Mr. Arend Lljphart Is An Author Of A Book Called Patterns... Mr. Arend Lljphart is an author of a book called Patterns of Democracy. The book examines the forms and performance of governments in thirty six countries. Patterns of Democracy is seventeen chapters long. Below, there will be a critical analysis of a claim or a particular theory in the first seven chapters on the merits of the claim or theory. To start with, chapter one is an introduction to what is to come. It claims that two models of governing the majoritarian model and the consensus model exist. In a majoritarian model, a governing body will seek to satisfy a will of a bare majority or even a will of a plurality of a governed body. Alternatively, in a consensus model, a governing body will seek to form a consensus to fulfill the wishes of as many people as possible. Even in a democracy, it is possible for a government to listen to the wishes of a minority while ignoring the will of the majority and attempt to convince the majority that the minority has a point here. Secondly, the title of the next chapter of the book is the Westminster model of democracy. As the author noted, this is another name of the majoritarian model. It is unclear why the author felt a need to dedicate a chapter to this. That said, he effectively gives three countries that fit this group. Furthermore, the author listed ten characteristics of the model and how England, New Zealand, and Barbados comply and deviate from the model as well as any qualification that needs to occur in the group. ... • 14. Transfer Pricing Is An Internal Practice Transfer pricing is an internal practice within an MNE and thus it is insulated against the open market forces of demand and supply. In competitive open markets, the forces of demand and supply would interact to determine the price at which goods and services are transferred. While these forces could have an impact on transfer pricing from a macro perspective, their impact on intra group pricing can be limited. Larry J. Merville and J. William Perry (1978) identified the various items that affect the setting of transfer prices to include methods and rates of income taxation, quotas and duties on importation of materials, restrictions on flow of capital, currency regulations and the preferences of management of an MNE for risk avoidance through consideration of the risks associated with the fluctuation of foreign currency exchange rates, rates of inflation and the risk of nationalisation. Managerial reward and control is another item that is considered and often plays a significant role in transfer pricing (Merville and Petty, 1978). Some of these items often lead to conflicting goals and objectives that an MNE has to deal with. This section analyses the issue of transfer pricing in light of these considerations. Theoretical framework / conceptual framework Optimal intra firm pricing Hirshleifer (1956) poses that in order to obtain optimal intra firm pricing; the transfer price must be equal to the marginal cost of the affiliates producing goods in conditions of ... The Big Sleep talks about a dying millionaire General Sternwood hires Philip Marlowe (private detective) to handle the blackmailer of Carmen Sternwood, one of his wild daughters. Tim Burton, one of the most esteemed directors of our time has done extensive studies particularly on films from the German Expressionism era and often incorporates those influences as seen in his 1990 blockbuster, Edward Scissorhands. Metropolis, in particular, regarded as one of the greatest films from the German Expressionism era, showcases aspects of this era that Tim Burton s film directly derives from, everything from the generally dark visuals to the development of setting and storyline. In viewing both films and examining them side by side, it is quite clear Edward Scissorhands contains many modern day film styles, however at the same time draws numerous influences from Metropolis and from the German Expressionism era in general. The most astounding aspect of the German Expressionism era is the influences it has made in films that were made far past its prime. At any point in history films and directors incorporate clear influences from past cinematic eras, films such as Edward Scissorhands included modern day film styles while drawing key characteristic influences from films like Metropolis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the majority of the religious groups, as long as due respect is shown to the body, cadaver organ transplants are not forbidden (Garrett, Baillie, amp; Garrett, 2001). But in some cultures death is not the end of the soul and that the life of the body can be restored. Most families still refuse to donate the organs of their dying relatives despite all efforts made to increase donations. Harvesting may be thought of as violating the sanctity of the body. Donation may involve unwarranted mutilation of the body and so disrespect for the dignity of the human body (Garrett, Baillie, amp; Garrett, 2001). Individuals are urged to sign an organ donor card with little or no awareness of what that action can mean. How the death is determined may weigh in on the decision to donate. The potential recipient is rarely known, because tissue and compatibility tests must be done. There is always less ethical force in an unnamed potential person that a living identifiable one. The horror stories that make the headlines also deter consent for donation. The few illegal harvesting accusations which are published in newspapers and documented on television deter individuals from donating and allow them to see denial of consent as the barrier to exploitation and harm. There is also a fear that the organ donor may not actually be dead but declared dead prematurely so that the vital organs can be taken to benefit another human being. The Uniform ... • 27. Understanding The Consciousness Of The People Of London At... Tracking the culture of a society has always proven to be a challenge. Historians and archeologists may study artifacts, books, poetry, among other cultural legacies in an attempt to understand the beliefs and lives of previous generations. However, this has a certain level of inaccuracy towards the beliefs of the average person in that society. To speak to that point, I wish to introduce Gilbert and Sullivan. Gilbert and Sullivan were a pair of opera writers operating in England between 1871 and 1896. Their operas were so immensely popular with the British public that the world s first building lit entire by lightbulbs, the Savoy Theater, was built for the purpose of housing the premiers of their operas. It is through this immense popularity with the common people that we can begin to understand the consciousness of the people of London at the time. In this case, Gilbert and Sullivan s opera, Utopia Limited, can provide us with a clear picture of the Victorian view on a woman s place in sports, and information on their beliefs on sports in general. Sports throughout the Victorian age can be used as a telescope to examine a wide range of issues. Whether it s the role of women, thoughts on prudery, or a manifestation of romanticism within society, there is much to learn from sports. This is why Gilbert and Sullivan s second to last Opera, Utopia Limited, should pique the interest of any sports historian. Throughout Utopia Limited, W.S. Gilbert outlines the characteristics ... In The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, Peekay lacks the traditional parental figure that most people have, and instead crosses paths with many significant people over the course of the book. This puts Peekay at an advantage because he is able to see the world through different perspectives, the perspectives of those who mentored him. He learns from people of all walks of life, which leads to him being unbiased and open minded. Peekay also is at an advantage because he has to learn to think for himself. His mentors help him with this, but the lack of a true parent forces him to learn this skill early on and master it by time is was older. Finally, each of Peekay s mentors have something different to offer, a different key piece of advice, that give him a set of morals to live by. In the Power of One, the lack of the traditional parental figure helps further Peekay s maturity and helps him to attain his own power of one. Peekay is mentored by a variety of people throughout the book, all who come from different backgrounds and who have different life experiences. Over the course of the book, Peekay is mentored by a mixed prisoner, a professional boxer, and an old German professor. None of these people have anything in common except for their love and concern for Peekay, and Peekay respects all of them because that is what Geel Piet teaches him when he first begins to coach him. Jay also explained how Sandia played a key role in our country s nuclear deterrence capabilities during the Cold War and that, although there was a lot of public speculation on what actually was going on at Sandia, the military had designated that the activities at Sandia Base were secret under the Atomic Energy Act. Grandpa and Jay received level 32 security clearance status, which was the absolute highest level of security clearance available. That kind of clearance gets limited to only those persons who need access to classified information for mission accomplishment, and is also called TOP SECRET clearance involving matters of national security. • 30. Aristotle Analysis An examination of Aristotle s critique of the different claims to rule reveals that because of our nature as political animals, living the good life is most practicable under the regime of the polity. Therefore, by separating the utopian theory of a regime and the practicable application, Aristotle shows that we can live in a state where our virtue contributes to the being of the city, and in the process, bring forth the ultimate goal of the city: achieving happiness through the good life. By laying out the case for a ruling oligarchy, Aristotle claims the wealthy regard justice in strictly monetary terms, saying, [oligarchs] think if they are superior in one point, for example in wealth, they are superior in all (Aristotle 103). It is essential to understand that by applying his ethics to his politics, Aristotle is claiming that we can find the mean between the god like virtue of his perfect state through the more practical application of moderation. True, the majority of men who rule in a polity will not be of the most excellence, but they will be the second best excellence, which is those in possession of much moderation. By acting as a voice of reason amidst the excessive and defective, the middle can serve as a barrier against those who would overstep the mean, and therefore act against virtue. The two world religions chosen are Islam and Buddhism, to someone just considering religions, they could be confused, at the surface they could think, that these two religions are so different that one could not find any substantial, and meaningful similarities. Well that thought is a very insider s view on the facts and histories of religion. as there are differences in each religion which is what makes them unique, there are also similarities which are fascinating and which I intend on explaining for the rest of the length of this paper. In the Buddhism and Islamic tradition, they both speak of a man of significance. For Buddhism, it s the Buddha, the founder of the Buddhist way of life, their eternal teacher for some he is called, the man who carved the path for all. For the Islamic people, they have Muhammed, considered to most in Islamic tradition to be a prophet a messenger sent from god. In the Islamic culture, it is said that no one could ever succeed Muhammad in his nature and quality as a prophet. (partridge 397) These two men, in the very broad sense of the word each taught the path that individuals should take to achieve the goal, and by that made their legacy as some might say as the founders of their religion. More recently, anger violence, and aggression has become part of our day to day lives. But what are the causes to this increase of human aggression? Why are humans becoming more numb to others pain and insensitive to their feelings? It s chilling to see how the world around us can affect our state of mind. Many scholars have debated on whether aggression is due to biology or our environment. Tomas Hobbes for example, stated in 1651 that in our natural state, we are brutes and are prone to enforcing the law. He believed humans have a natural instinct towards aggression. Jean Jacques Rousseau s disagreed with that viewpoint; she thought that humans were born gentle creatures and that our society forces aggressive tendencies on us. Although Hobbes and Rousseau seemed to be extremists in their opinions, I thought both takes on aggression were true. Aggression is due to both biology and the environment. Studies have proven that aggression is that something that has to be learned. Humans have developed and adapted so much over time it seems that certain necessities for survival have been ingrained in us from our ancestors. We have a natural instinct to protect our territory and threats from the environment can cause us to act both physically and mentally aggressive. Compare And Contrast Dracula And Parable Of The Sower Similarly to Dracula, in Parable of the Sower, Lauren is initially condescended by more dominant males, including her father, Harry, Bankhole, and Travis. Her religion has not taken full form and she cannot yet present it in a compelling and coherent manner to convince people to join her community. She is somewhat fantastical about venturing beyond her housing wall and fully forming her religion. She literally lives surrounded by walls, symbolizing a cave that shields her from all that the outside world has to offer. Even if the exterior of the wall only presents her with danger, violence, and a crumbling society, it is reality and a dangerous reality is safer than the illusion of safety. Once she is forced to exist and live on her own, she structures Earthseed, her religion, and becomes able to fend for herself. Parable of the Sower takes place in a dystopian california in the not too distant future. At first, Lauren resides in the relative safety of a walled community of eleven homes, but her community is burned to the ground and she is forced to undergo a change. As she enters the real world and leaves her home, she gains knowledge and knowledge is powerful. Her change is apparent in both her actions and excerpts from her religion. Lauren exclaims, There has to be more that we can do, a better destiny that we can shape. Another place. Another way. Something! (151). Here, she haphazardly searches for something. She cannot even identify what she is looking for. Her desires are unclear and she presents them immaturely. Smirnov Vodka Empire in The King of Vodka Although the King of Vodka concerns itself with a different time period and a distant land, the history of founding and eventual disintegration of the Smirnov Vodka Empire seems resonant in today s business environment. The famous brand was built in one of the most tumultuous periods in Russian history, yet the founder had struggled with many of the same business problems we see today. In 1831, Pyotr A. Smirnov was born to illiterate Russian serfs in a village so remote that walking at night required clanking metal sticks together to scare off the wolves hidden in the forest. Smirnov spent his childhood during one of Russia s worst cholera epidemics. However, vodka was his ticket out of this peasant life. Settling in Moscow during the reforms that began with emancipation, his genius grassroots marketing popularized his products and established his brand. His life became one of privilege. His ascent would have continued uninterrupted had it not been for a series of devastating labor strikes, social uprisings, and a government imposed vodka monopoly. Ultimately, the Smirnov lost it all, as victims of the Bolshevik revolution and the chaos it unleashed. Fortunately for Smirnov, his family was ambitious.
