Mill And Utilitarianism
1.According to Mill, why are some pleasures more worthwhile than others?
According to Mill, what makes a pleasure more valuable than other merely as pleasure except its
being greater in amount, there is but one possible answer. Of two pleasures, if there be one to
which all or almost all or have experience of both give desired preference irrespective of any
feeling of moral obligation to prefer it, that is the more desirable pleasure. This means that it all
comes down to the person s preferences once he or she has experienced pleasure in both quantity
and quality.
2.Explain the difference between act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism.
For Act Utilitarianism an act is right if it results in as much good as any available alternative

Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola Essay
At a time when humanist thinkers occupied themselves with determining man s position in the
world, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, in the 15th century Oration on the Dignity of Man, asserted
that man is master of both his dignity and destiny, and there was no limit to what scientists may
achieve as long as they glorify God in the end. World history teaches that, though scientists might
begin research with the intent of glorifying God , the rush to advance in scienceand technology and
the fever to uncover the wonders of nature result in hubris and the abandonment of God and the
subsequent exaltation of human beings God like properties. Scientists throughout the centuries
have held differing opinions about the limits humans should impose on science: whereas Pico della
Mirandolabelieved science was to be used for the glorification of God, but never for the
imposition of man on God s will; Sir Francis Bacon, writing 150 years later, believed that any
scientific experimentation or means which justified the end goal of human perfection were
acceptable, even if they interfered with God s creations. In the 21st century, ethicists and scientists
from around the world propose that science should be allowed to continue with broad moral
checks; science is not inherently good or... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice Act
Congress passed the Notice of Observation Treatment and Implication for Care Eligibility Act

Auto Channels Essay
It might appear to be senseless, yet changing your auto channels all the time can significantly affect

Here in Los Angeles, where we have our publication workplaces, the premises have an idiom:
Never inhale air you can not see. While the editors of Edmunds.com, an every day stroll through

There is a major issue with this photo? Would it be a good idea for us to won t be the most covers

1984 Songs Analysis
The Dark 1984 Soundtrack Music always has hiding meanings. Every song we listen to we can
almost always compare it to an event or person. While reading 1984 two songs came to mind
that had definitive ties to the characters Winston and Big Brother. Another song had similarities
to the telescreen. The connection of these three songs of the characters and object enhance the
meaning of the story. Winston is one of those rebellious characters. He doesn t care completely
of the consequences, he just does what he wants, even if the Party doesn t agree with him. This
is why the song Devil in her Heart, by Richard Drapkin describes him perfectly. In the song there is
a part were the lyrics say I ll take my chances. He will do whatever he wants... Show more content

Well in Oceania they are always being watched by telescreens. This is why the song Nowhere to
Run, by Martha and the Vandellas fits perfectly with telescreens. The Lyrics that show that the
people in Oceania are always being watched is when it says, Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.
No matter where you are at there is never away to get away from the Party due to the telescreens.
An example in the book that represents these lyrics well is when Julia and Winston are upstairs
at Mr. Charrington s house and they are near each other and they say we are dead and then an
iron voice repeated them. They sprung apart and then realized that the whole time there was a
telescreen behind the big picture on the wall (221). They thought they had finally found a place
where they weren t being watched by the telescreen but they were being watched the entire time.
This just proves that they never had anywhere to run or hide because wherever they went they
were being watched. Another example that shows these lyrics depicting the telescreen is in the
beginning of the book when it was described that any sound Winston made could be picked up
and that it was conceivable that they watched everyone all the time. They had to live and did live
in the assumption that every sound they made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every
movement scrutinized (3). These two examples in the book 1984 really show the lyrics Nowhere to

Anthony Bourdain was born on June 25, 1956 in New York City. Son to a copy editor and music

his love for food came from a family vacation in France, where he tried an oyster. Graduating from
Dwight Englewood School in 1973, he then went on to Vassar college, dropping out after two years
to attend the Culinary Institute of America. He then spent more than 25 years as an unknown cook

Mexican American Perception Of Mexican Immigrants In America
Izard, Isaac
16 Oct. 2017
The Problem with America
The pattern of companies recruiting Mexican workers and those workers being deported, and the
blatant racism present in America, including actions by the US government laid the foundation for
the Mexican Struggle. The people who exploited Mexican workers began by propagating specific
stereotypes that were to their favor. These corporations insinuated that Mexicans were genetically
made for the kind of work which they were being given. The spreading of these stereotypes played
a significant role in the Mexican American reception of Mexican Immigrants. They didn t want to
be associated with the negative ideas being spread around about Mexicans. Thus, they took shelter
in their American citizenship and before long, they too were rallying for the same immigration
restrictions.
Understanding how Mexican Americans felt about Mexican Immigrants is important to
understanding a specific aspect of the Mexican Struggle. Mexican Workers also had to work against
Mexican Americans in the United States. Not only were white rallying for immigration restrictions,
but so were Mexican Americans. Lots of Mexican Americans didn t like Mexican Immigrants
due to the state of the job market. Many whites believed that Mexican workers were temporary
and had no staying power. They simply want work..., they are not immigrants at all. They do not
try to buy or colonize our land, and they hope someday to be able to own a piece of land in their

What Were The Main Problems With The Articles Of 1787
The Articles of Confederation, ratified on March 1, 1781, created the structure for the
confederation of the 13 colonies that fought in the American Revolution. It set up a federal
government with very limited powers, and it gave most of the power to the 13 states. Within a
short period of time, the Constitution of 1787 was ratified to solve the problems that the Articles of
Confederationdid not address. The Articles of Confederation had major problems, caused by the
fear of a distant national government, which would get solved six years later in the Constitution.
One main problem with the Articles of Confederation was a weak national government, where
Congress did not have the power to levy taxes. In Article 8 of the Articles of Confederation,... Show

This was a major problem because even though Congress was the only component of
government, they did not have the power to force the states to do anything. The government
was unable to force or interpret laws. In the Articles of Confederation, Article 2 states, Each state
retains its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right,
which is not by this Confederation expressly delegated to the United States, in Congress
assembled (Articles of Confederation, Article II). This declares that each state can keep their
jurisdiction, which meant that each state has its own power to regulate their own laws.
Moreover, any rights and powers that are not given to Congress by the Articles of Confederation
are kept by the state. Since the government did not have an executive branch, there was no one to
enforce the laws created by Congress. Theoretically, Congress could raise an army, but they could
not force any states to send people to go to war or force the states to give them any equipment
necessary for the war. This shows how little power Congress actually had under the Articles of
Confederation. Furthermore, even if Congress passed a law for the citizens of the United States,
the states could ignore the law and there would be no consequences. Individual states could also

The Civil War Of Syria
The civil war in Syria has lasted for 5 years; yet, there is little hope for a prompt end to the turmoil.
It has developed into quite a unique civil war from the political perspective. Drawing in new actors
who have pursued their own goals within the country and contributed to the current condition of
Syria. The basis for this war and the conflicts within it have also had a large effect at the global
level. The initial welling for revolution in Syria was caused by a chain of regime changes across
the Middle East in 2011 known as the Arab Spring. Beginning in Tunisia, civil protests arose against
the long established dictatorship in the country. The protests did not result in war but rather the
resignation of the leader. It freed citizens from a government that they believed had ignored their
rights and established a new administration which would hopefully correct the mistreatment the
citizens had endured. Tunisia s successful revolution had served as inspiration for the nearby
country of Egyptto follow suite. The protests in Egypt lasted for 18 days, during which internet
was mostly blocked by the state to quell the rumors of violence and rebellion. The defense against
protesters failed and the president was stripped of all power and jailed. News of two successful
rebellions against oppressive regimes soon spread across the Arab world. Libya was the next to
try its hand at an uprising. The established power would not be so easily removed however and the
country descended

Coordination Plan
3. Coordination Plan There is a multitude of reasons for an organization to have a business
continuity plan in place. The incident does not really matter whether it is natural or manmade
disaster/incident but if an incident occurs, it can have a disastrous effect causing the company
operation to become unstable and having the inability to contain or control its impact can halt the
business routine (Vacca, 2013).
Also, creating a good working relationship with the law enforcement can assist in aiding an
organization with an incident. Although organizations will sometimes not notify or include LE

Use of advanced security information and event management solution is in place in order to capture

Other considerations to take to make sure that network intrusion is detected and/mitigated is by
constantly monitoring the network for any anomalies and having an alert/notification system. Alert
and notification system will allow for the organizations incident response team/plan to be activated

How Does Bernard Marx Present John
Bernard Marx, who is the main character until John s appearance in chapter seven, is one of the
most important characters in the novel. Marx first appears after the director has finished
explaining that jealousy and lovesickness don t exist in the World State. This introduction is
ironic because, as we gain insight to the mind of Marx, we learn that he is experiencing both
jealousy and lovesickness. In this same scene we are shown that he struggles with his emotions
towards Lenina and finds it difficult to express his feelings towards her, which probably stems
from his anxiety about rejection. Marx is an Alpha Plus, which means that, naturally, he should
be able to enjoy the benefits that come with being a member of the upper caste. However, Marx
is noticeably short in stature for his caste, which is rumored to be a result of alcohol in his blood
surrogate. This is cause for humiliation and ridicule from his other caste members. Marx is,
unfortunately, aware of his differences and people s responses to them. Because of this, he
develops resentment towards the society he lives in, internally criticizing their behavior because he
himself cannot engage in the same activities as his counterparts. Marx longs to be a strong
individual, and even rebellious; yet, when he is confronted by his superiors, he shrinks and becomes

The Wonderer 10th Century
Often the solitary one finds grace for himself the mercy of the Lord. Although he, sorry hearted,
must for a long time move by hand (in row) along the waterways, along the ice cold sea, tread the
paths of exile. Events always go as they must!
So spoke the wanderer, mindful of hardships, of fierce slaughters and the downfall of kinsmen
(comrades):
Often I had alone to speak of my trouble each morning before dawn. There is none now living to
whom I dare clearly speak of my innermost thoughts.
I know it truly, that it is in men a noble custom, that one should keep secure his spirit chest (mind),

He who thought wisely on this foundation, and pondered deeply on this dark life, wise in spirit,
remembered often from afar many conflicts, and spoke these words:
Where is the horse gone? Where is the rider? Where is the giver of treasure? Where are the seats
at the feast? Where are the revels in the hall? Alas for the bright cup! Alas for the mailed warrior!
Alas for the splendour of the prince!
How that time has passed away, dark under the cover of night, as if it had never been! Now there

Then dark comes, nightshadows deepen, from the north there comes a rough hailstorm in malice
against men. All is troublesome in this earthly kingdom, the turn of events changes the world under
the heavens. Here money is fleeting, here friend is fleeting, here man is fleeting, here kinsman is
fleeting, all the foundation of this world turns to waste!
So spake the wise man in his mind, where he sat apart in counsel.

whether to produce and own the next album of an up and coming folk musician, or simply license

capital investment alternatives, whereby they can evaluate the attractiveness of the investment
based on net present value (NPV) and the internal rate of return (IRR) of the discounted cash flows

Making either/or Project Decisions
Virtually all general managers face capital budgeting decisions in the course of their careers. Among
the most common of these is the either/or choice about a capital investment. The following
describes some general guidelines to orient the decision maker in these situations.
1.Focus on cash flows, not profits. One wants to get as close as possible to the economic reality of
the project. Accounting profits contain many kinds of economic fiction. Flows of cash, on the other
hand, are economic facts.
2.Account for time. Time is money. We prefer to receive cash sooner rather than later. Use net
present value as a technique to summarize the quantitative attractiveness of the project. Quite
simply, NPV can be interpreted as the amount by which the market

The Differences Between Prairie Style Architecture And...
In this paper I will be discussing and contrasting the differences between Prairie Style architecture
and Hi tech architecture. We will go over the origin, the years it was used, the main components
and characteristics, some of the architects that used these design types, a few real= world
examples, and we will compare them. Prairie School was a late 19th and early 20th century
architectural style, most common to the Midwestern United States. The style is usually marked by
horizontal lines, flat or hipped roofs with broad overhanging eaves, windows grouped in horizontal
bands, integration with the landscape, solid construction, craftsmanship, and discipline in the use of

The designation Prairie is due to the dominant horizontality of the majority of Prairie style buildings
which echoes the wide, flat, treeless expanses of the mid Western United States. The most famous
proponent of the style, Frank Lloyd Wright, promoted an idea of organic architecture , the primary
tenet of which was that a structure should look as if it naturally grew from the site. Wright also felt
that a horizontal orientation was a distinctly American design motif, in that the younger country had
much more open, undeveloped land than found in most older, urbanized European nations.
Hi tech architecture, also known as Structural Expressionism, is a type of Late Modern architectural
style that emerged in the 1970s, incorporating elements of hi tech industry and technology into
building design. Hi tech architecture appeared as revamped modernism, an extension of those
previous ideas helped by even more technological advances. This category serves as a bridge
between modernism and post modernism; however, there remain gray areas as to where one
category ends and the other begins. In the 1980s, hi tech architecture became more difficult to
distinguish from post modern architecture. Some of its themes and ideas were later absorbed into
the style of Neo Futurism art and architectural movement.
Like Brutalism, Structural Expressionist buildings reveal their structure on the outside as well as
the inside, but with visual emphasis placed on the

Cold War Research Paper
When most people think of War they think of weapons, killing, and vicious attacks, however, that s
not what the Cold War was; hence the name. The Cold war was primarily a conflict between the
Eastern bloc and the Western bloc involving mainly economic and political actions, but no direct
military action between the United Statesand the USSR. The Eastern bloc consisted of the Soviet
Unionand its satellite states, and the Western bloc consisted of the United States and its NATO
allies. The Cold Warbegan in 1945, nearly immediately after the end of World War II, then lasting
about forty five years. This war was caused by three main things, those being mistrust between the

These proxy wars were very malicious and were often occurring in Korea, Vietnam, and Angola.
In addition to this war costing so many lives, this war also had a large money cost; nearly Eight
trillion dollars. This shocking cost tends to take a lot of people off guard, although war is
expensive, most people were expecting things one to be relatively cheap because it was not
involving any military action. However, this war was full of threats, especially the threat of using
nuclear weapons. In order to have an accurate threat, the United States would continuously be
building nuclear weapons in case this war reached that extent. Therefore, that s where the large cost
came in, because, the United States was spending about thirty five billion dollars per year on the
construction of nuclear weaponry. This approximately forty five year war was a constant
worldwide clash between the Soviet Communism and the American capitalism. Fortunately, after
losing so many lives and so much money, it is thought that the United States finally won the Cold
War. However, the United States is only remembered as the winners, because the Soviet Union lost.
The Soviet Union did not meet their goal of destroying the west and their capitalist

Descriptive Essay On Scrooge
The text explicitly states Scrooge, a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, clutching, covetous, old
sinner has passed away. According to the text, he despises many things such as happiness,
humor, and even Christmas. From the reading, I know that he is depressed all the time,
consequently his mental state has led him to call other people stupid, dumb, and idiots. On page
three, in the conversation with his nephew Fred, Scrooge insults his nephew about marrying and
loving his wife. The text states, that he also seized the ruler with such energy of action, that the
singer fled in terror, leaving the keyhole to the frost and even more congenial frost. From the
reading I know that Scrooge isn t a people person and is very down about life. Based on the text
he doesn t really like being around them. For example Scrooge didn t donate any money to the
poor, and blew off his nephew about spending Christmas with them. In the text it states that there
is no wind as bare as Scrooge, this means he doesn t really care or doesn t have many feelings.
The first ghost came when the clock pounded one. A horrid fusion among a child and an old man
the ghost opens the Scrooge s bed curtains. According to the text the spirit is very vivid and bright.
So the ghost takes Scrooge to his old school. According to the text Scrooge actually starts to
laugh for the first time at the appearance of him reading fantasy books. Consequently he wasn t
outdoors, playing with the other kids. The second place the ghost took Scrooge was where he
and his sister were talking about their father being sent away. From the reading of the first spirit
Scrooge really likes the first spirit for being very generous and thoughtful for taking Scrooge and
showing him motivational parts in his life. The ghost of Christmas past helped Scrooge learn that
there is more in life other than being morose all the time, there is amusement, family, bliss, and
ambitious life to live. When Scrooge puts his hand on the lock he heard an articulation call his
name and commanded him to enter. He did as the voice said. The enormous giant of Christmas
present said look upon me. He had scarcely done so. The giant family wanted Scrooge to stay for
supper. Scrooge

The Roman Catholic Church During The Middle Ages
The Roman Catholic Church was the only church during the middle ages. It had very large funds
and its own set of laws. The Church, as some even considered very wealthy, had many sources of
income and it accounted for one third of the land in England. Breaking away from this entity that
dominated most of the western world and once bound everyone together for thousands of years
seemed inconceivable. It controlled religion, art, music, morals and even politics. There was truly
no alternative and anyone who went against or defied the church was known as a heretic or pagan
and was burned at the stake. Catholics began losing faith over time with the expanding influence of
Humanism and corruption in the church. This sparked the Protestant Reformation,... Show more

This mindset was precisely the reason for many objections from John Calvin and Martin Luther. As
head of the Catholic Church, popes in the middle ages were deeply religious men. Part of the
responsibility of being Pope meant dealing with the political world that surrounded them. They
were recognized as supreme ruler over religious and political matters in their entirety. Pope Boniface
VII in 14th century said, We declare, state, define and pronounce that for every human creature to
be subject to the Roman pope is altogether necessary for salvation. Each of them had their different
strengths and weaknesses, but all operated under the mental structure of the church and family.
They certainly hoped for reform, but they absolutely believed the office of the Pope should lead that
particular reform and remain the supreme head of the Church. As stated, Luther and Calvin held
great opposition to this

Three Causes Of The Bhopal Chemical Plant Disaster In 1984
Introduction Three causes of the Bhopal Chemical Plant disaster happening in India in 1984 were
long term financial difficulties, poor safety management and inadequate emergency plans. The
disaster occurred when water entered a methyl isocyanate (MIC) storage tank, which led to a
runaway reaction and then discharged toxic MIC vapour into the atmosphere. The leak caused the
death of more than 2,000 people and the health effects on about 200,000 locals in the surrounding
shanty towns (Kletz 2009, p. 338). Long term financial difficulties One cause of the Bhopal
chemical disaster was long term financial difficulties, resulting in limited training and inadequate
maintenance. limited training According to Joseph, Kaszniak and Long (2005, p. 544), prior to
the disaster, the company had been facing a financial crisis for many years because the sale of
pesticides had been fallen. Mannan (2012, p. 2649) points out that due to the budget cuts, many
plant operators received insufficient training on operations and safety awareness. As shown in
figure 1, there was a decrease in the length of training programmes for plant operators from 18
months in 1975 to only one month in December 1984, which is mentioned by Chouhan (2005, p.
207). Therefore, Chouhan (2005, p. 207) indicates that without the knowledge of runaway reactions
occurring in the storage tank when the accident happened, many workers could not immediately
take any emergency action to lessen the risk of the MIC escape from

How Does John Keats Use Personification In The Four Seasons
In The Human Seasons the author, John Keats, uses personification while describing the four
seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. There is such a deeper meaning to this poem than
one may realize. The four seasons actually represents distinctive phases/stages that are terrifically
vital for life to exist. Tho s stages are birth, childhood, adulthood, and death. This is proven by
Keats when he states that Four Seasons fill the measure of the year; There are four seasons in the
mind of man. By stating that He has his lusty Spring, when fancy clear Takes in all beauty with an

Franklins Case
1.Overview of Situation Franklins was the first supermarket chain launched no frills brand of
generic products in Australia. The company was positioned as a low prices supermarket. The
operations of Franklins were based on cost reduction principles that involved limited promotion,
low inventory, a large number of product lines and simple facilities (Brown, 1997). In 1992,
Franklins had developed a new concept, called Big Fresh, which had increased sales volume.
According to Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (1999), Franklins as the third
leader supermarket chain raised market shares with Woolworths and Coles from 40 percent in 1975
to nearly 80 percent in 1998. Although Franklins was successful in growth market share, smaller
sized stores and extended shopping hours had... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Statement of Main Problem Level of Analysis The level of analysis in this case is Level 2 as
organisation issues. 1)Industry issues: 1980s were a golden age for supermarket industry and
Franklins was a mainstream supermarket format (Jacenko Gunasekera, 2005).Today, supermarket
industry is developing positively. Australian Bureau of Statistics. (2014) reported supermarket trend
break of $190 million in December 2013. 2)Organisation issues: It is obviously an organisation
issue as Franklins was not achieved mass extension and re formatting organisation since 2001.
3)Discipline issues: Due to fail changing organisation, the marketing and communication strategies
appear confused. It is difficult to decide right message strategy toward reposition Franklins.
Problem Type In relation to Franklins, the problem type is practically a specific problem that
requires a solution, which changes the ways of organisation mass investment on extending and
restructuring that can be modified from a poor situation. The reason is Franklins lacking of success
on a marketing decision, so Franklins should choose the ways can contribute organisation

Cafe Europ Life After Communism Essay
The 20th century in Europe was filled with war and revolution along with political and economical
change. The destruction caused by World War II remained prominent in eastern European countries
even years after the war ended in 1945. For years the Soviet Union fought for communism while
NATO did everything they could to prevent it. Although communismslowly released its grip on the
eastern European countries in the late 20th century, western countries still looked down upon these

As Drakulic talked about in her memoir, even traveling was made more difficult for eastern
Europeans by the people living in western Europe, who made it seem like people from eastern
Europe should not be trusted (Slavenka Drakulic, 19). I smiled at an officer and was immediately
selected for a luggage search (Slavenka Drakulic, 17). It is almost like no matter how nice an
individual may seem or be, Western Europeans were always on defense, thinking only negatively.
This makes it extremely evident that although the Eastern countries are no longer under communist
regime and European countries as a whole could easily live peacefully amongst each other, there is
still a major division between the east and west (Slavenka Drakulic, 21). People in ex communist
countries tried their hardest to fit in with the western European countries. There were many cafГ©s
and hotels made with names such as Vienna, in efforts to try and seem like they have some sort of
connection with these western countries. Simply by using such a name, you are presenting not
only an image, but a whole system of values, too (Slavenka Drakulic, 9). It is almost like the more

Major League Baseball is an oligopoly dominated by a few firms. The baseball teams including the

A Reflection On My Professional Visit At The Youth...
this essay I will be looking a critical incident reflection which I had when I went for my
professional visit at the youth offending team in London. Using Reflection will be used to reveal
how well or badly the situation was handled by the staff this will then enable me to see how the
incident and the overall reflection has influence personal learning for me
Hogston and Simpson (1999) says that reflection is a process of reviewing an experience of
practice in order to better describe, analyses and evaluate, and inform learning about practice . The
incidents occurred during the first day of my placement the incident was that some of the young
people refused to interact with me as they didn t know who I was and that trust was not built up
beforehand many of the youth s thought I was the police coming in to ask them questions about
themselves and their personal lives as many of these young people are still very vulnerable I
didn t presume them. Within any type of helping relationship building up that trusting
relationship is essential as it allows the person to feel safe to share what they have experienced
with you as an individual, Geldard and Geldard (2004) emphasize how important it is to build up
a relationship at a very early stage of meeting the client. Reid and Westergaard (2011) then go on
to say once this relationship has developed the helper will then be able to listen to the young
person s story.

The Endocrine System Essay
The endocrine system is a group of glands distributed throughout the human body. This group of
glands secretes substances called hormones. These hormones are dumping into the bloodstream
(Shier, Butler Lewis, 2009). The endocrine system does not have a single anatomic location. It is
dispersed throughout the human body. The final purpose of this process is to control, regulate, and
coordinate the functioning of the human body. Some body functions can be activated or inhibited
by hormones, which are secreted in very small quantities. The hormone related diseases may be due

Hyperthyroidism (too much hormone) may result Grave s disease. Symptoms include anxiety, rapid

The parathyroid glands are located in front of the base of the neck around the thyroid gland and
secrete parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid hormone regulates blood levels of calcium and
phosphorus. This hormone (parathyroid hormone) affects the bones, kidney, and intestine (Shier et

Adrenal glands are endocrine glands that sit atop the kidneys (Shier et al., 2009). The adrenal
glands secrete hormones that increase heart rate, the force of cardiac muscle contraction, breathing

According to Shier, Butler Lewis (2009) other glands that produce hormones and thus are parts of
the endocrine system include the pineal gland and the thymus gland . Shier et al., 2009 argued the
pineal gland, located deep between the cerebral hemispheres, secretes hormone melatonin that acts
on certain brain regions that function as a biological clock. The changing levels of melatonin

Sexuality in Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums
Reading over this excellent story once more, I am again filled with
the same emotion (if it can be called that) that I experienced when first
reading it. Steinbeck planned for that. In a letter to George Albee in
1933, Steinbeck comments on this story and his interest in Albee s opinion
of it. ...It is entirely different and is designed to strike without the
reader s knowledge. I mean he reads it casually and after it is finished

He doesn t quite catch
onto the eroticism of the story, and in stead, chooses to focus on the more
crude innuendoes. ...The chrysanthemum stalks seem to be phallic symbols,
and Eliza s over eager snipping of them suggests castration. Then in the
rooting bed, Eliza herself becomes masculine, inserting the little crisp
shoots into open, receptive furrows (Hughes 235). He goes on explaining
how the shoots became Eliza s children and how she communicates with the
tinker on how to care for them. This makes perfect sense, but Eliza seems
more concerned with the loss of her own life. For too long, the
chrysanthemums have served in place of children. She is looking into
reclaiming her own life, not finding another electric connection to live
her life through. Hughes seems to ignore this, because all women by nature
want to procreate and have children, right? The androgyny of Eliza s
character, however, would suggest otherwise. She isn t as pulled by that
biological need as Hughes would suggest.
Elizabeth E. McMahan is strong in saying that although people will
agree that The Chrysanthemums is a story of a woman s frustration, no one
can adequately explain why. McMahan attributes the frustration to her
unhappiness with her marriage. She explains that although she and Henry
have a relationship of mutual respect, he has no gift

Circumcision Persuasive Speech
Title: Circumcision in baby boys
Name: Leya Saju
Plain Language Summary
What is circumcision? What are the benefits? What are the risks?
Circumcision is when the skin that surrounds the tip of the penis is removed. It is a very common
surgery in the United States. It is usually done in newborns, but can also be done in older men.
Families choose to do circumcision because of personal hygiene, faith, tradition etc. While other
families see it as unnecessary.
Circumcision makes it easier to wash the penis and keep the area clean. It also decreases the chance
of getting infections. Sometimes in men who are not circumcised, it may become difficult to pull
the foreskin back. This may cause that foreskin or the head of the penis to become inflamed. Also,
cancer of the penis is seen less in circumcised men. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rarely, the foreskin does not heal properly or the cut may be made too short or too long. The
American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends circumcision because there are a lot more
benefits than risks, but the decision is entirely up to the parents.
How is it done? Does it hurt?
Circumcision is usually done within 10 days after birth at the hospital nursery. It takes about 10
minutes to do. The baby will lie on his back and the foreskin will be removed by attaching a
Mogen or Gomco clamp to the penis. Ointment and gauze are then used to wrap the penis.
An injection with anesthetics or a cream for pain is used first. To distract the infant, sometimes
sugar water is also used. Research also shows that there may be a difference in pain when a
Mogen clamp is used instead of Gomco. These clamps are common tools used to hold the foreskin
away from the tip of the penis so that your doctor can make a neat cut and reduce any harm to the
head of the

Comparing The Bhagavad Gita And The Upanishads
As any other society, India and Greece underwent changes that transformed their thoughts, beliefs,
social order, and their idea about this world. Most of these changes were experienced during the
Axial Age and the Age of Iron. These periods in history made people question themselves about
topics such as life, the world, death, the soul, etc. People attempted to answer these questions
through ideas, philosophies, and myths. India gave birth to Hinduism which expanded quickly.
This spiritual tradition focused on finding peace and eternal tranquility rather than temporary
satisfaction from the worldly pleasures. In order to transmit the idea to other people and guide
them through it, they came up with different writings to illustrate this. The Bhagavad Gita and
the Upanishads are popular writings that exemplify the beliefs and thoughts of Hinduism. The
Bhagavad Gita addresses the question about how a person can be one with Brahman, the
universal soul or god, while living in this world. This document is set as a dialogue between the
warrior Arjuna and his guide and charioteer Krishna. Arjuna is being encouraged by Krishna to
fulfill his duty as a warrior and part of the Kshatriyas, one of the higher divisions in the caste
system. Arjuna has to enter this battle and fight in order to live up to his duty and consequently
live free from attachments and walk in the path of finding himself as one with Brahman. On the
other hand, the Upanishads guided all kinds of people regardless of

Carl Sandburg And The American Dream
The American Dream is a well known concept and idea that many immigrants and Americans
strived for in order to become successful. Unlike most countries where rising from rags to riches
was highly uncommon and a hopeless dream, America was a place for people to work hard and
achieve their dreams. Carl Sandburg was a very influential poet who came from very humble
beginnings under immigrant parents who had moved to America. He believed in an ordered society
where people could strive and accomplish what they chose without being influenced by the majority
of the country. To achieve the American Dream
, Sandburg had to travel across the States, overcome
challenging experiences, such as searching for newspapers to work for, keeping a job, and dealing
with the death of his daughter Madeline. His AmericanDreamof becoming a successful poet,
journalist, and goal of leaving a lasting legacy only became reality after many years of hard work
and perseverance.
To begin, there are not many people who can say that their childhood started with joining the
army, later living on the streets, and working a variety of jobs. Due to these circumstances,
Sandburg had many goals and even more ideals he wished to share to the world. As a youth, he
lived a difficult life, as he quit school in 8th grade and was always busy working to help his family
by delivering milk, collecting ice, laying bricks, and more, before becoming a hobo in 1897 (Barr

the unbearable lightness of being Essay
The Unheard Voice of Commitment nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; What the reader understands
of the infidelity of Milan Kundera s characters in The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a mere
distraction from the real substance of the story and of the character s real purpose. Kundera
offers the reader a red herring and only through close examination can one dissect and abstract the
true essence of each character s thread that links them to one another in this story. For it is not
clearly seen: in fact, it can not be seen at all. It is the fierce absence of the word commitment that
is so blatantly seen in each individual, yet the word itself is buried so deeply inside of Tomas and
Tereza that it takes an animal s steadfast and unconditional... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Her feeling was rather that, given the nature of the human couple, the love of man and woman is
a priori inferior to that which can exist (at least in the best instances) in the love between man
and dog, that oddity of human history probably unplanned by the creator (297). Tereza knew as
the dog lay dying that the reason why she snuggled so close to Karenin was her commitment.
That same commitment was the reason why she still slept next to Tomas every night. Love,
whether we perceive it or not, has a hold that stitches souls together in the patchwork of life. It
was not until after the dog s death that Tomas grasped this idea as well. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;
nbsp;Karenin proved to be a symbol of Tomas and Tereza s marriage and the prospect of death
seemed to inevitably doom the marriage. Tereza understood that Karenin s commitment to
please was the reason why the dog held on. Kundera s following passage reflects this, It was sad,
what she said, yet without realizing it they were happy. They were happy not in spite of their
sadness but thanks to it. They were holding hands and both had the same image in their eyes: a
limping dog who represented ten years of their lives (293). In the existence of a dog there was a
light. This light did not fade when the dog s existence was ceased, yet grew brighter in the eyes of
a man. Tomas learned that in his years of endless escapades and rendevous with strange woman,
was his resistence to love and commitment to Tereza. He

  • 4. Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola Essay At a time when humanist thinkers occupied themselves with determining man s position in the world, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, in the 15th century Oration on the Dignity of Man, asserted that man is master of both his dignity and destiny, and there was no limit to what scientists may achieve as long as they glorify God in the end. World history teaches that, though scientists might begin research with the intent of glorifying God , the rush to advance in scienceand technology and the fever to uncover the wonders of nature result in hubris and the abandonment of God and the subsequent exaltation of human beings God like properties. Scientists throughout the centuries have held differing opinions about the limits humans should impose on science: whereas Pico della Mirandolabelieved science was to be used for the glorification of God, but never for the imposition of man on God s will; Sir Francis Bacon, writing 150 years later, believed that any scientific experimentation or means which justified the end goal of human perfection were acceptable, even if they interfered with God s creations. In the 21st century, ethicists and scientists from around the world propose that science should be allowed to continue with broad moral checks; science is not inherently good or... While reading 1984 two songs came to mind that had definitive ties to the characters Winston and Big Brother. Another song had similarities to the telescreen. The connection of these three songs of the characters and object enhance the meaning of the story. Winston is one of those rebellious characters. He doesn t care completely of the consequences, he just does what he wants, even if the Party doesn t agree with him. This is why the song Devil in her Heart, by Richard Drapkin describes him perfectly. In the song there is a part were the lyrics say I ll take my chances. He will do whatever he wants... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Well in Oceania they are always being watched by telescreens. This is why the song Nowhere to Run, by Martha and the Vandellas fits perfectly with telescreens. The Lyrics that show that the people in Oceania are always being watched is when it says, Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. No matter where you are at there is never away to get away from the Party due to the telescreens. An example in the book that represents these lyrics well is when Julia and Winston are upstairs at Mr. Charrington s house and they are near each other and they say we are dead and then an iron voice repeated them. They sprung apart and then realized that the whole time there was a telescreen behind the big picture on the wall (221). They thought they had finally found a place where they weren t being watched by the telescreen but they were being watched the entire time. This just proves that they never had anywhere to run or hide because wherever they went they were being watched. Another example that shows these lyrics depicting the telescreen is in the beginning of the book when it was described that any sound Winston made could be picked up and that it was conceivable that they watched everyone all the time. They had to live and did live in the assumption that every sound they made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized (3). • 11. Mexican American Perception Of Mexican Immigrants In America Izard, Isaac 16 Oct. 2017 The Problem with America The pattern of companies recruiting Mexican workers and those workers being deported, and the blatant racism present in America, including actions by the US government laid the foundation for the Mexican Struggle. The people who exploited Mexican workers began by propagating specific stereotypes that were to their favor. These corporations insinuated that Mexicans were genetically made for the kind of work which they were being given. The spreading of these stereotypes played a significant role in the Mexican American reception of Mexican Immigrants. They didn t want to be associated with the negative ideas being spread around about Mexicans. Thus, they took shelter in their American citizenship and before long, they too were rallying for the same immigration restrictions. Understanding how Mexican Americans felt about Mexican Immigrants is important to understanding a specific aspect of the Mexican Struggle. Mexican Workers also had to work against Mexican Americans in the United States. Not only were white rallying for immigration restrictions, but so were Mexican Americans. Lots of Mexican Americans didn t like Mexican Immigrants due to the state of the job market. Many whites believed that Mexican workers were temporary and had no staying power. What Were The Main Problems With The Articles Of 1787 The Articles of Confederation, ratified on March 1, 1781, created the structure for the confederation of the 13 colonies that fought in the American Revolution. It set up a federal government with very limited powers, and it gave most of the power to the 13 states. Within a short period of time, the Constitution of 1787 was ratified to solve the problems that the Articles of Confederationdid not address. The Articles of Confederation had major problems, caused by the fear of a distant national government, which would get solved six years later in the Constitution. One main problem with the Articles of Confederation was a weak national government, where Congress did not have the power to levy taxes. In Article 8 of the Articles of Confederation,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was a major problem because even though Congress was the only component of government, they did not have the power to force the states to do anything. The government was unable to force or interpret laws. In the Articles of Confederation, Article 2 states, Each state retains its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this Confederation expressly delegated to the United States, in Congress assembled (Articles of Confederation, Article II). This declares that each state can keep their jurisdiction, which meant that each state has its own power to regulate their own laws. Moreover, any rights and powers that are not given to Congress by the Articles of Confederation are kept by the state. Since the government did not have an executive branch, there was no one to enforce the laws created by Congress. Theoretically, Congress could raise an army, but they could not force any states to send people to go to war or force the states to give them any equipment necessary for the war. This shows how little power Congress actually had under the Articles of Confederation. Furthermore, even if Congress passed a law for the citizens of the United States, the states could ignore the law and there would be no consequences. Individual states could also ... It has developed into quite a unique civil war from the political perspective. Drawing in new actors who have pursued their own goals within the country and contributed to the current condition of Syria. The basis for this war and the conflicts within it have also had a large effect at the global level. The initial welling for revolution in Syria was caused by a chain of regime changes across the Middle East in 2011 known as the Arab Spring. Beginning in Tunisia, civil protests arose against the long established dictatorship in the country. The protests did not result in war but rather the resignation of the leader. It freed citizens from a government that they believed had ignored their rights and established a new administration which would hopefully correct the mistreatment the citizens had endured. Tunisia s successful revolution had served as inspiration for the nearby country of Egyptto follow suite. The protests in Egypt lasted for 18 days, during which internet was mostly blocked by the state to quell the rumors of violence and rebellion. The defense against protesters failed and the president was stripped of all power and jailed. News of two successful rebellions against oppressive regimes soon spread across the Arab world. • 15. How Does Bernard Marx Present John Bernard Marx, who is the main character until John s appearance in chapter seven, is one of the most important characters in the novel. Marx first appears after the director has finished explaining that jealousy and lovesickness don t exist in the World State. This introduction is ironic because, as we gain insight to the mind of Marx, we learn that he is experiencing both jealousy and lovesickness. In this same scene we are shown that he struggles with his emotions towards Lenina and finds it difficult to express his feelings towards her, which probably stems from his anxiety about rejection. Marx is an Alpha Plus, which means that, naturally, he should be able to enjoy the benefits that come with being a member of the upper caste. However, Marx is noticeably short in stature for his caste, which is rumored to be a result of alcohol in his blood surrogate. This is cause for humiliation and ridicule from his other caste members. Marx is, unfortunately, aware of his differences and people s responses to them. The task for the students is to build a valuation model for the two capital investment alternatives, whereby they can evaluate the attractiveness of the investment based on net present value (NPV) and the internal rate of return (IRR) of the discounted cash flows (DCF). Further, the student will have the opportunity to interpret those results and to test those measures ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Table TN1. Among the most common of these is the either/or choice about a capital investment. The following describes some general guidelines to orient the decision maker in these situations. 1.Focus on cash flows, not profits. One wants to get as close as possible to the economic reality of the project. Accounting profits contain many kinds of economic fiction. Flows of cash, on the other hand, are economic facts.

  • 20. The Differences Between Prairie Style Architecture And... In this paper I will be discussing and contrasting the differences between Prairie Style architecture and Hi tech architecture. We will go over the origin, the years it was used, the main components and characteristics, some of the architects that used these design types, a few real= world examples, and we will compare them. Prairie School was a late 19th and early 20th century architectural style, most common to the Midwestern United States. The style is usually marked by horizontal lines, flat or hipped roofs with broad overhanging eaves, windows grouped in horizontal bands, integration with the landscape, solid construction, craftsmanship, and discipline in the use of ornament. Horizontal lines were thought to evoke and relate to the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The designation Prairie is due to the dominant horizontality of the majority of Prairie style buildings which echoes the wide, flat, treeless expanses of the mid Western United States. The most famous proponent of the style, Frank Lloyd Wright, promoted an idea of organic architecture , the primary tenet of which was that a structure should look as if it naturally grew from the site. Wright also felt that a horizontal orientation was a distinctly American design motif, in that the younger country had much more open, undeveloped land than found in most older, urbanized European nations. Hi tech architecture, also known as Structural Expressionism, is a type of Late Modern architectural style that emerged in the 1970s, incorporating elements of hi tech industry and technology into building design. Hi tech architecture appeared as revamped modernism, an extension of those previous ideas helped by even more technological advances. This category serves as a bridge between modernism and post modernism; however, there remain gray areas as to where one category ends and the other begins. In the 1980s, hi tech architecture became more difficult to distinguish from post modern architecture. Some of its themes and ideas were later absorbed into the style of Neo Futurism art and architectural movement. Like Brutalism, Structural Expressionist buildings reveal their structure on the outside as well as the inside, but with visual emphasis placed on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Descriptive Essay On Scrooge The text explicitly states Scrooge, a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, clutching, covetous, old sinner has passed away. According to the text, he despises many things such as happiness, humor, and even Christmas. From the reading, I know that he is depressed all the time, consequently his mental state has led him to call other people stupid, dumb, and idiots. On page three, in the conversation with his nephew Fred, Scrooge insults his nephew about marrying and loving his wife. The text states, that he also seized the ruler with such energy of action, that the singer fled in terror, leaving the keyhole to the frost and even more congenial frost. From the reading I know that Scrooge isn t a people person and is very down about life. Based on the text he doesn t really like being around them. For example Scrooge didn t donate any money to the poor, and blew off his nephew about spending Christmas with them. In the text it states that there is no wind as bare as Scrooge, this means he doesn t really care or doesn t have many feelings. The first ghost came when the clock pounded one. A horrid fusion among a child and an old man the ghost opens the Scrooge s bed curtains. According to the text the spirit is very vivid and bright. So the ghost takes Scrooge to his old school. According to the text Scrooge actually starts to laugh for the first time at the appearance of him reading fantasy books. Consequently he wasn t outdoors, playing with the other kids. The second place the ghost took Scrooge was where he and his sister were talking about their father being sent away. From the reading of the first spirit Scrooge really likes the first spirit for being very generous and thoughtful for taking Scrooge and showing him motivational parts in his life. The ghost of Christmas past helped Scrooge learn that there is more in life other than being morose all the time, there is amusement, family, bliss, and ambitious life to live. When Scrooge puts his hand on the lock he heard an articulation call his name and commanded him to enter. He did as the voice said. The enormous giant of Christmas present said look upon me. The Church, as some even considered very wealthy, had many sources of income and it accounted for one third of the land in England. Breaking away from this entity that dominated most of the western world and once bound everyone together for thousands of years seemed inconceivable. It controlled religion, art, music, morals and even politics. There was truly no alternative and anyone who went against or defied the church was known as a heretic or pagan and was burned at the stake. Pope Boniface VII in 14th century said, We declare, state, define and pronounce that for every human creature to be subject to the Roman pope is altogether necessary for salvation. Each of them had their different strengths and weaknesses, but all operated under the mental structure of the church and family. • 26. Three Causes Of The Bhopal Chemical Plant Disaster In 1984 Introduction Three causes of the Bhopal Chemical Plant disaster happening in India in 1984 were long term financial difficulties, poor safety management and inadequate emergency plans. The disaster occurred when water entered a methyl isocyanate (MIC) storage tank, which led to a runaway reaction and then discharged toxic MIC vapour into the atmosphere. The leak caused the death of more than 2,000 people and the health effects on about 200,000 locals in the surrounding shanty towns (Kletz 2009, p. 338). Long term financial difficulties One cause of the Bhopal chemical disaster was long term financial difficulties, resulting in limited training and inadequate maintenance. limited training According to Joseph, Kaszniak and Long (2005, p. 544), prior to the disaster, the company had been facing a financial crisis for many years because the sale of pesticides had been fallen. Mannan (2012, p. 2649) points out that due to the budget cuts, many plant operators received insufficient training on operations and safety awareness. As shown in figure 1, there was a decrease in the length of training programmes for plant operators from 18 months in 1975 to only one month in December 1984, which is mentioned by Chouhan (2005, p. 207). • 40. The Endocrine System Essay The endocrine system is a group of glands distributed throughout the human body. This group of glands secretes substances called hormones. These hormones are dumping into the bloodstream (Shier, Butler Lewis, 2009). The endocrine system does not have a single anatomic location. It is dispersed throughout the human body. The final purpose of this process is to control, regulate, and coordinate the functioning of the human body. Some body functions can be activated or inhibited by hormones, which are secreted in very small quantities. The hormone related diseases may be due to hyper secretion, or a hypo secretion. Hyperthyroidism (too much hormone) may result Grave s disease. Symptoms include anxiety, rapid heart rate, diarrhea and weight loss, nervousness, anxiety, and irritability. The parathyroid glands are located in front of the base of the neck around the thyroid gland and secrete parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid hormone regulates blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. This hormone (parathyroid hormone) affects the bones, kidney, and intestine (Shier et al., 2009). Adrenal glands are endocrine glands that sit atop the kidneys (Shier et al., 2009). The adrenal glands secrete hormones that increase heart rate, the force of cardiac muscle contraction, breathing rate, elevate blood pressure and blood glucose level. This activity prepares the body foe energy expending action, sometimes called fight or flight responses (Shier et al., 2009). According to Shier, Butler Lewis (2009) other glands that produce hormones and thus are parts of the endocrine system include the pineal gland and the thymus gland . Shier et al., 2009 argued the pineal gland, located deep between the cerebral hemispheres, secretes hormone melatonin that acts on certain brain regions that function as a biological clock. The changing levels of melatonin across 24 hours enable the body to know when day is and when is night. Shier et al., 2009 explain that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sexuality in John Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums Essay Sexuality in Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums Reading over this excellent story once more, I am again filled with the same emotion (if it can be called that) that I experienced when first reading it. Steinbeck planned for that. In a letter to George Albee in 1933, Steinbeck comments on this story and his interest in Albee s opinion of it. ...It is entirely different and is designed to strike without the reader s knowledge. Then in the rooting bed, Eliza herself becomes masculine, inserting the little crisp shoots into open, receptive furrows (Hughes 235). He goes on explaining how the shoots became Eliza s children and how she communicates with the tinker on how to care for them. This makes perfect sense, but Eliza seems more concerned with the loss of her own life. For too long, the chrysanthemums have served in place of children. She isn t as pulled by that biological need as Hughes would suggest. Elizabeth E. McMahan is strong in saying that although people will agree that The Chrysanthemums is a story of a woman s frustration, no one can adequately explain why. Circumcision is when the skin that surrounds the tip of the penis is removed. It is a very common surgery in the United States. It is usually done in newborns, but can also be done in older men. Families choose to do circumcision because of personal hygiene, faith, tradition etc. While other families see it as unnecessary. Circumcision makes it easier to wash the penis and keep the area clean. It also decreases the chance of getting infections. Circumcision is usually done within 10 days after birth at the hospital nursery. It takes about 10 minutes to do. The baby will lie on his back and the foreskin will be removed by attaching a Mogen or Gomco clamp to the penis. Ointment and gauze are then used to wrap the penis. An injection with anesthetics or a cream for pain is used first. To distract the infant, sometimes sugar water is also used. Research also shows that there may be a difference in pain when a Mogen clamp is used instead of Gomco. These clamps are common tools used to hold the foreskin away from the tip of the penis so that your doctor can make a neat cut and reduce any harm to the head of the ... • 45. Comparing The Bhagavad Gita And The Upanishads As any other society, India and Greece underwent changes that transformed their thoughts, beliefs, social order, and their idea about this world. Most of these changes were experienced during the Axial Age and the Age of Iron. These periods in history made people question themselves about topics such as life, the world, death, the soul, etc. People attempted to answer these questions through ideas, philosophies, and myths. India gave birth to Hinduism which expanded quickly. This spiritual tradition focused on finding peace and eternal tranquility rather than temporary satisfaction from the worldly pleasures. In order to transmit the idea to other people and guide them through it, they came up with different writings to illustrate this. The Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads are popular writings that exemplify the beliefs and thoughts of Hinduism. The Bhagavad Gita addresses the question about how a person can be one with Brahman, the universal soul or god, while living in this world. This document is set as a dialogue between the warrior Arjuna and his guide and charioteer Krishna. Arjuna is being encouraged by Krishna to fulfill his duty as a warrior and part of the Kshatriyas, one of the higher divisions in the caste system. Arjuna has to enter this battle and fight in order to live up to his duty and consequently live free from attachments and walk in the path of finding himself as one with Brahman. On the other hand, the Upanishads guided all kinds of people regardless of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Unlike most countries where rising from rags to riches was highly uncommon and a hopeless dream, America was a place for people to work hard and achieve their dreams. Carl Sandburg was a very influential poet who came from very humble beginnings under immigrant parents who had moved to America. He believed in an ordered society where people could strive and accomplish what they chose without being influenced by the majority of the country. To achieve the American Dream , Sandburg had to travel across the States, overcome challenging experiences, such as searching for newspapers to work for, keeping a job, and dealing with the death of his daughter Madeline. His AmericanDreamof becoming a successful poet, journalist, and goal of leaving a lasting legacy only became reality after many years of hard work and perseverance. To begin, there are not many people who can say that their childhood started with joining the army, later living on the streets, and working a variety of jobs. Due to these circumstances, Sandburg had many goals and even more ideals he wished to share to the world. As a youth, he lived a difficult life, as he quit school in 8th grade and was always busy working to help his family by delivering milk, collecting ice, laying bricks, and more, before becoming a hobo in 1897 (Barr 1). Kundera offers the reader a red herring and only through close examination can one dissect and abstract the true essence of each character s thread that links them to one another in this story. Her feeling was rather that, given the nature of the human couple, the love of man and woman is a priori inferior to that which can exist (at least in the best instances) in the love between man and dog, that oddity of human history probably unplanned by the creator (297). Tereza knew as the dog lay dying that the reason why she snuggled so close to Karenin was her commitment. That same commitment was the reason why she still slept next to Tomas every night. Love, whether we perceive it or not, has a hold that stitches souls together in the patchwork of life. It was not until after the dog s death that Tomas grasped this idea as well. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;Karenin proved to be a symbol of Tomas and Tereza s marriage and the prospect of death seemed to inevitably doom the marriage. Tereza understood that Karenin s commitment to please was the reason why the dog held on. Kundera s following passage reflects this, It was sad, what she said, yet without realizing it they were happy. They were happy not in spite of their sadness but thanks to it. They were holding hands and both had the same image in their eyes: a limping dog who represented ten years of their lives (293). In the existence of a dog there was a light. This light did not fade when the dog s existence was ceased, yet grew brighter in the eyes of a man.
