Exploring the Role of Women in Mexico in Like Water For...
Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel explains women s roles in northern Mexico during the
turn of the nineteenth century. The novel takes place in northern Mexico on a family ranch where
many family traditions are carried out. Also, the novel describes some of the typical foods that were
prepared and fiestas that were celebrated in the Mexican culture around this time. However, the novel
mainly focuses on the roles of females in Mexican society at that time. The novel goes beyond
explaining women s roles and also explains what took place in the Mexican family. Throughout the
novel, readers learn the role of mothers, the conflict between personal desires and tradition, and
typical foods, celebrations, and family traditions that were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I thought what a wonderful way to tell a story (Mujica 38). The reader is often present in the kitchen
with Esquivel when she writes about her past experiences in the kitchen.
At the time Like Water for Chocolate takes place, the Mexican Revolution rages on. The book takes
place during the turn of the nineteenth century, which leads to many other events in the story. The
Mexican Revolution took place from 1910 to 1920, and brought many changes to the Mexican culture.
In the novel, the reader can see that Gertrudis was one of the many women who participated in the
Mexican Revolution, and worked her way up to being a general in the movement. Women that
participated in the Mexican Revolution were sometimes found fighting beside the men, which was not
something that many women did during that time. Also, during the time of the Mexican Revolution,
the soldiers treated many women and young females poorly. Esquivel tells how many women were
mistreated, A group of bandits attacked the ranch. They raped Chencha. Mama Elena, trying to defend
her honor, suffered a strong blow to her spine and was left a paraplegic, paralyzed from the waist
down (Esquivel 129). These events are described vividly from her first person perspective to better
understand the situations that took place during the time that the Revolution was raging on.

Apollonianism And Dionysianism In The Greek God Brothers
There is two sides to everything, the good and the evil, the wise will say that it is best to have both.
The similarities that both Greek god brothers, Apollo and Dionysus, have with both East of Eden
brothers, Aron and Cal are identical in some aspects. An individual can choose to carry themselves
with behaviors that are either Apollonian or Dionysian, a mixture of both helps find a healthy balance
that will let an individual live a life at its full potential without causing damage to oneself or others.
Aron and Cal have clashing personalities that create a different environment in their lives and their
relationship with their father. Friedrich Nietzsche discussed the Apollonian and Dionysian
philosophies in the essay Apollonianism and Dionysianism, by contrasting and comparing them he
was able to create concepts that can be tied down to how an individual chooses to live and the
outcome they will create with the lifestyle they carry. He believes that the two forces of Apollonianism
and Dionysianism can be unified to have a diversity of characteristics in a person and that way the
artist is born. Nietzsche portrays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

keep her tied down to the agricultural life. Later in the film, Cal decided to tell his brother Aron the
truth, the truth drove him into downward spiral mental stability that could be referred to as Dionysian
just as similar as Nietzsche worded it, ...the latter realized, with a shudder, that all this was not so alien
to him after all, that this apollonian consciousness was but a thin veil hiding from him the whole
dionysiac realm. (pg.468) Aron at first can be seen to possess apollonian characteristic, but as he has
his eyes open with the reality that his father lied to them about his mom being dead he seems to

The Environmental Disasters Of The World And Living Things...
What is Missing?
Pollution has plagued the world and living things within it since the industrial revolution and the
development of new technology. While some people might know the effects of the environmental
disasters that have occurred through the years, other do not. Maya Lin created a collaborative
memorial to try to gear people s attention to the problems being faced in the environment. The
collaborative memorial can easily be accessed by anyone who has a computer and internet access. For
example, the BP oil spill affected a great number of living things and marine animals, due to a human
error and the failure to clear up the problem efficiently. Another example is the Flint Water Crisis that
caused innocent children to become deathly sick due to the lack of necessary chemicals. Another
example about pollution is the Great Smog of 1952, which occurred in London, the smog lasted for
five days and killed about 4,000 people. Most of the people that were affected by the smog were
children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems. The memorial is meant to shine light on
the living things that are going extinct around us and how we as humans have contributed to their
extinction. Its purpose is to evoke empathy, better understanding, guilt, sorrow, and even rage. By
creating the memorial, everyone s eyes can be open to the negative effects that our pollution has
caused the world. The memorial also provides ways people can make a difference in the world where

The Painted Door
When two people are tied together by their vows, it is each of their responsibility to fulfill the
happiness of one another, and if one cannot then they should not expect the same in return. Sinclair
Ross s short story, The Painted Door , reveals the growing unhappiness of a farmer s wife, Ann, who
feels alone as her husband John leaves home to help his father in the harsh conditions of the storm.
Ann seeks comfort and companionship with another man after 7 years of feeling neglected and
unhappy with her husband. The responsibility for Ann s infidelity, lays not only on Anne but John
himself.
In marriage there should be a foundation of trust but it is also important to commit to the duties of a
marriage. John should have realized that letting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It s time I was used to staying alone. This quote shows that she is often left alone, as her husband
tends to the chores of the farm. Ann resents John for leaving her alone all the time. Anne is attracted to
Steven by the way he describes him, he was erect, tall, square shouldered. His hair was dark and trim,
his young lips curved soft and full. The descriptions that Anne uses shows her attraction towards the
Steven physically. She uses much more flattering words to describe him in comparison to how she
would describe John. Anne is bothered that her husband does not care about his appearance. This is
displayed in the following quotation, He ll be shaved, though that s what I mean and I d like you too to
spend a little time on yourself. She is comparing him to Steven, and wanting him to be more like
Steven. Steven knew that Ann was lonely and needed someone with whom to talk. When Steven
shows up just at the right time to help Ann with the stock, she was so glad and excited that he had
come. He puts his arms around her to comfort her...and she enjoys it. Anne, in the end does love her
husband. The subsequent quote shows this, ...half smiling still, his lips relaxed in the conscienceless
complacency of his achievement, she understood that thus he was revealed in his entirety all there ever
was or ever could be. John was the man. With him lay all the future. For tonight, slowly and contritely
through the day and years to come, she would try to make amends. This shows that she indeed loves
John and feels remorse for being unfaithful to him. In John being her man she is saying that she wants
to be with him and not Steven. Steven is addressed in this quote as being just a guy who achieved
nothing more than having sex with a married woman. the remorse is demonstrated by her saying that
she will do her best to make it up to John for the rest of their

June 2003, the number of youth in out of home care totaled 764. By the end of fiscal year 2004
roughly 668 youth were in foster care in Prince George s County, according to the Citizens
Review Board for Youth, an advisory panel on the child welfare established by the Maryland
General Assembly. Although quality foster care is an important resource to protect youth from risk, far
too often, out of home placements are implemented to respond to the crisis at hand. The opportunity to
address family problems in the context in which they occur seldom take place.
According to statistics, youth in foster care will spend an average of nearly three years there before
being placed in permanent homes. During their time in foster care, many of the youth have
experienced multiple placements and some have endured at least one adoption disruption.

Dysart Speech In Equus By Peter Shaffer
In the play, Equus, by Peter Shaffer, Dysart speaks to both the large in the theatre and the smaller one
on stage about his concerns. There the concerns that he addresses are that he feels as if he is lost and
cannot reach his goals, like a bit forbids it, and [his] own basic force...is too little to overcome it.(18)
Dysart is a commendable psychiatrist who works in a psychiatric hospital, and he is not completely .
Dysarts initial speech has several effects such a establishing Dysart as a character, the speech also
results in the establishment of the dramatic features of the play as a whole, for example, conflicts and
theme. Dysarts speech has a great effect on the play, specifically Dysart s character. His speech

Although Dysart is primarily focusing on Alan as his patient throughout the entirety of the play, the
underlying story in the play is about Dysart trying to find himself, like Alan already has, even if it is

Music Programs In Schools
Music programs are not in all schools. (What percentages of schools have music programs?) Music
can help students in so many aspects of life, but schools aren t investing in the music program. (How
much on average is a music program cost?) All high schools need to have elective music programs in
order to see benefit their grade averages, to create career preparation, to build teamwork skills, and to
boost student participation in school. Schools are so focused on grade improvement and getting better
scores on state mandated tests each year that they are not taking the time to think about the benefit that
music programs could achieve in this aspect. It has been proven that music students score higher on
standardized tests than non music students. (What percentage?) (Where else, how else do we see grade
improvement?) (What is the average scores received?) Because of higher grades and classes offered in
a music program, students become more prepared to start a career. Music students become passionate

Teamwork is established by the need to blend together and be on time with each other, as well as the
director. If one is not correct in the timing, all will fall apart and phasing or ripples will happen. This
will cause things to sound or look horrendous. If someone is off pitch, it will be noticed, and the
audience will not enjoy that performance. (What more can I say about friendship?) There are also
many team building exercises that are done when training in order for a successful show. In marching
band when the drum majors are selected, they are sent to a camp for a week where they learn different
activities that can be done with their classmates to build that sense of teamwork even more. Not only
does this camp bring together the drum majors, it brings together the entire unit that performs on the

Optimization Technique For Feature Selection And...
Optimization Technique for Feature Selection and Classification Using Support Vector Machine
Abstract Classification problems often have a large number of features in the data sets, but only some
of them are useful for classification. Data Mining Performance gets reduced by Irrelevant and
redundant features. Feature selection aims to choose a small number of relevant features to achieve
similar or even better classification performance than using all features. It has two main objectives are
maximizing the classification performance and minimizing the number of features. Moreover, the
existing feature selection algorithms treat the task as a single objective problem. Selecting attribute is
done by the combination of attribute evaluator and search method using WEKA Machine Learning
Tool. We compare SVM classification algorithm to automatically classify the data using selected
features with different standard dataset.

Brotherhood, Discipline, and Commitment.
Brotherhood is shown throughout Remember the Titans. Coach Bill Yoast, emanating from a different

Coach Boone finds ebony players on one bus and white players on the other, so he authoritatively
mandates them to vacate the buses and commixes the buses up by putting the offense on one bus and

Out of all sports, football seems to be the one that builds the most vigorous bonds between its
teammates. The physical demands during a game and practice force each player to rely on one another
on the field. Think about the relationship between each offensive lineman. They all have to visually
examine each others backs while bulwarking their own. Even more vigorous than that is the
relationship between a quarterback and his offensive teammates. As mentioned afore, the offensive
line is there to forfend the quarterback. The quarterback needs to trust them to stop any defensive
player from getting to him, in order for him to do his job. Withal, the quarterback must have faith in
not only his o line, but his wide receivers and his running backs as well. He has to trust them that they
will be able to make plays if he gets them the ball. Discipline is shown in Remember the Titans. The
players of the team have to go through rigorous discipline. They are required to wear uniforms and act
as opportune as they can otherwise they are penalized for disobedience. They are required to revere
their elders. The players of the team have to reply with Sir after everything they verbalize. The team is
expected to verbalize with confidence and with a stentorian voice. Through such rigorous training, the
team players learned to be disciplined and abide by rules. This shows how discipline was portrayed in

thinks that he is smarter than his teacher Mr. Hennessey. Paddy thought that hw was so much smarter
than Henno because he did everything that he was supposed to do. I listened. I watched. I did my

know you are only playing when you do it, said Mister Finnucane. (109) Pruning was something that

Effects Of Trauma In Judith Herman
Judith Herman, M.D. with this book introduces us readers into the most impacting stories about
trauma and recovery. As she tells us in the introduction, she used real cases from her professional
experience working as a Doctor. She was also a Professor and a Feminist. For her, the author,
Feminism has a great influence over her and her understanding of the impact that trauma has over its
victims. Many women were involved on violent acts that through history showed the inequality in
rights between men and women. Violence against women can be seen as a social mechanism used by
men as control tool to subordinate them to a lower position compared with men. Feminism as a
movement was the power behind the women who fought for equal rights in a society where they were
denied them. Feminism worked as a motivator, in a sense that allowed these women to verbalize more
freely their traumatic experiences. In addition to these conversations, the Feminist movement
impacted social and political entities and they were able to hear the voices of these women and the
acts that turned them into victims. Dr. Herman describes the traumatic experiences that distressed
people suffered as atrocities. These atrocities in their context are hidden behind a veil of silence over
those who suffered trauma and witnessed it as well. Horrible events is the way the author described in
the book some of the causes of trauma. She identified some of these people involved as: rape
survivors, combat veterans, battered women, political prisoners, survivors of vast concentration camps
created by tyrants who rule nations and the survivors of small, hidden concentration camps created by
tyrants who rule their homes. It is important to recognize the role of those who participate in these
traumatic events. We can identify first the victim, who might be intentionally or accidentally caught
up in the event. Second, we have the perpetrator or the person who intentionally causes the incident.
Victims of trauma can be children, women, people with disabilities, and even men. Perpetrator could
be any person who uses force or a violent act to exercise control over his victim. The author
communicates in Chapter 1 some historical events which

Essay on Violence in the Media
Violence in the Media
Media is all around us. Everywhere we look, there is someone, somewhere trying to communicate his
or her thoughts to us. And with the new technologies in media, this message is stronger than ever.
Almost every home in America has a television or radio in it. The messages that are portrayed through
these mediums are unmistakable; buy me, listen to me, think what I think. With all of these messages
spinning around there are bound to be some bad seeds. Violence has become an important issue,
something that has become almost part of our daily lives. So often we lose sight of just how serious
violent messages in media can affect our daily lives. Violence in the media has become so much more

This sometimes has news teams going to extreme measures to capture the most graphic footage. The
viewers like the most graphic footage, so news teams are always trying to get it. The cyclecreates the
news to be very violent and sometimes too violent or graphic for television.
Studies have shown that young children are often exposed to the violence of the real world through the
news. By being young, the children are often with their parents and when the parents are watching the
news, the children are also seeing the images. Since a child?s mind retains information, the images are
perceived by the child and the child then becomes desensitized and is accepting of violent material.
When the children grow up, they are already very accustom to violence, and so very graphic images to
not
Affect them. With society creating the news, and also watching the news, the cycle is made. The
people watch and want the most specific detail of the story and the news teams do everything they can
to give that to the viewers. Without the viewers there would be no audience and therefore people
would just be unaware of what goes on in the world. This is why the news is important. The violence
in today?s world is what people see because that is what goes on.

Each and every one of these characters influences Taylor and plays an important role in shaping her
life. Mattie, the owner of a tire shop in Tucson Arizona, acts as a surrogate mother to Taylor. She is
wise, caring, and loving towards Taylor. When Taylor first stopped at Mattie s shop, Mattie helped
Taylor take care of Turtle. She was very hospitable and gave Turtle some crackers and juice. Lou Ann
Ruiz, Taylor s best friend and roommate acts as a source of guidance and support to Taylor. Even
though most of the time Taylor is helping Lou Ann with her insecurities and paranoia, Lou Ann never
fails to support Taylor at her darkest times. Together, they function as a single unit, reciprocating each
other s beliefs and thoughts. Estevan and Esperanza, two refugees fleeing from their cruel life in
Guatemala, also played an important role in shaping Taylor. After meeting those two, Taylor realizes
that life is not as blissful as she thought it was. She finds Estevan and Esperanza s struggles in
Guatemala heartbreaking. Taylor begins to grow a close attachment to Estevan. After Estevan and his

therefore considered a kind of forum selection clause.

Water Is The Second Largest Reserve Of Freshwater On Earth
The earth is like a living organism; it thrives full of life with a fragile balance. This balance has been
thrown off by many different things. Water seems to be one of the biggest problems with this offset
balance. Water is a magic liquid keeping all of life thriving. Humans drink and use water, plants use
water, water is used in everyday life, and it s slowly being taken away. In the future, there will be no
water left to sustain life on earth. Ground water is a very important part of our fresh water supply and
yet, it s depleting at a faster rate than what can be replenished. According to Kally Worm Groundwater
is the second largest reserve of freshwater on earth. It also makes up 40% of the freshwater used in the
U.S. alone. This ground water is usually found in what is called an aquifer. An aquifer is found
towards the lower layers of the soil. The problem with these aquifers it that their recharge rate is slow
making it non renewable. These water supplies being non re We are overusing these water supplies.
When ground water is used to a level of where it can t recover, it affects the ground. Sinkholes can be
formed when there is a aquifer that has water being drawn from it, but not letting it get back to par.
Other problems can also occur is too much ground water is pumped out near coasts. This creates what
s called salt water intrusion. Salt water intrusion is when the ocean water mixes with the fresh ground
water. This increases the salinity of the water making

The Works Of The Renaissance Period
The artist I chose to write my descriptive criticism about is Michelangelo Buonarroti. I chose him
because his style as an artist intrigues me and I wanted to get myself involved with more of his work.
Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy in 1475 and died in Rome, Italy 1564 but buried in Florence .
He is a well known sculptor painter, architect, and poet whom never married. The artist had many
great works but there will be three in particular that has caught my eye that will be the focus of this
paper. All of the pieces that I will be discussing are a part of the Renaissance period . The first piece
that I will focus on is called Pieta (1499) in St.Peter s Basilica. This is a sculpture of what seems to be
the virgin Mary and Jesus after he was crucified. This sculpture is a piece that was unique to me. As I
looked at this piece it seemed in away almost life like but the way he sculpted Mary was bueatifully
done. You can see the expression on her face and even the look of her garments that she wore were
very detailed. I noticed the way this painting has a triangular approach. If u look from the top of her
head where her veil starts to flow all the way to the floor or the feet of her son Jesus that is in the
shape of the triangle. The picture shows so much emotion. It shows Jesus lifeless in his mothers arms.
You can see fine details even little nail marks in his side. Exactly what does this sculpture portray I do
not know but I do know that just from

Was the Great Depression the main reason why the Nazi...
Was the Great Depression the main reason why the Nazi Party grew between 1929 and 1932? In my
opinion, I believe that the Great Depression was the most significant factor towards the growth of the
Nazi Party as this was the time when the Nazi Party grew rapidly from only 12 seats in May 1928 to
107 in September 1930 and became the second largest party in Germany, following after the KPD.
This was down to the economic crisis in the aftermath of the Wall Street Crash, which weakened the
Weimar Republic by discrediting its policies, consequently making the democratic politics less
popular. The government seemed powerless to stop the depression, especially because Stresemann, an
influential democratic politician, had died in October 1929. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By 1932 the SA had become a large force of 300,000 and by early 1933 the only alternative to Nazi
inspired civil war appeared to be Hitler becoming Chancellor. Therefore, the SA was one of the main
reasons for the growth of the Nazi Party, although it was not the most important. Finally, the growth of
the Nazi party would have never happened without the vital role played by the fear of Communism.
Ordinary Germans, particularly businessmen and farmers, were frightened of the Communists taking
over in their own country. Communists didn t believe in religion, so this worried churchgoers too.
From the start, Hitler said he would fight Communism and he sent his own private army, the SA, to
fight with Communists hence by 1932, persistent street violence between the extremists of left and
right was taking hold in cities and in the month of July 1932 alone, 86 people were killed as a result of
these political fights. Hitler gained much support from the middle and upper classes, which included
businessmen, landowners, and factory owners and so on because he promised to deal with the
Communist threat. Therefore, it is clear to see that this factor played a major role in the Nazi Party s
growth however, in my opinion, it is the least important out of the four factors that I have stated. In
conclusion, none of these factors can be viewed in isolation and the Nazi Party wouldn t have grown
as much as it did without the combination of all of these

Evaluation Of The Braden Scale Screening Tool Essay
Educational Needs Patient and Family It is important that patient and family are on the same page
with staff are fully aware of the risks of HAPUs and what they can watch for and do to prevent them
from acquiring them. The Braden Scale is simple enough that it can be used as is, or modified to help
the patient and family best understand what signs and symptoms to be aware of, as well as the risk
factors that may be modifiable or addressed early, in order to minimize them as quickly as possible.
Staff. The acute care staff will require in service training and evaluation before they implement the
Braden Scale screening tool. It is important that the staff is able to properly identify and understand all
of the criteria covered by the Braden Scale. By giving demonstrations and then allowing the staff to
teach back and then demonstrate the use of the Braden Scale screening tool, they will be able to have a
greater success rate in properly assessing patients who have a higher risk of acquiring HAPUs and will
be able to intervene in a timely manner before any irreversible damage is done.
Continuous Quality Improvement The issue of quality improvement should be addressed with a multi
faceted approach. Once implemented, continuous oversight and monitoring must be conducted by an
experienced staff member/case manager who can verify data in the EHR, as well as conduct a daily
Braden Score assessment and confer with the staff nurse and physician, as needed. While

What Is Imperialism
Imperialism In this paper, we will be discussing three different types of literature, short stories, and
poems. We will dig deep into the true meaning of these pieces of work. To bring forth how they felt
about the imperialism. So as we go forth into the wonderful works of these amazing writers, we will
dig deep to get the truth behind the words. So here we go let s get this started. Appearing in Orwelll s,
Shooting an Elephant, it brings to the table of imperialism. He says that imperialism is that not just the
conqueror, but the conquered are destroyed (Orwell, 1936). He shows that even though you have your
own ideas, you feel as if you have to because of either the position they are in society or just in
general. He describes as if you end up doing what they want you to do, you are losing and giving up a
part of your freedom. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He brings the motivations of war to light. He calls them as blind patriotic and religious motivations for
war (Twain, 1923). People in war ask for their soldiers to be protected, and as what happens in the
poem a messenger for God comes to them and tells them that this is wrong. It is a great shock but in
the end, they end up not believing him, saying he is not that even though their society has said that
war is the answer. That this guy who says he is a messenger for God, is wrong, and that s what
imperialism does it makes you want to not go against them. Next in the White Mans Burden, you see
how the people who are precedent are bringing imperialism to their country. It is showing that they put
a blind up after their people. To make them feel as if they are superior that they are doing good, and
the people who are being told this have no clue how much they look so opposite of what they think.
That is how it is, people put blinds over them to keep them from seeing how they are really being
treated or how they are treating others (Kipling,

The Effects of Violence in Media on Society Today Essay
Is societies violence the media s fault? This is the question that has been asked since before television
was in every American s house. Of course there are the different types of media today ranging from
newspapers, to on line reports and stories. There have been arguments upon arguments about this
issue, and over 3,000 studies conducted. Unfortunately there isn t one single result, there is only an
array of supposed answers to this undying question. CBS president, Howard Stringer is pointing to a
different scapegoat for society s violence. I come from a country that puts a lot of American movies
on and has more graphic violence within it s live drama on the BBC than anywhere else, and there is a
lot less violence in the United Kingdom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is notable to see that some of these theories were stated as early as 1961. Most would have to
disagree with these theories just because of the age of their births, but to most people s surprise they
still hold in the 21st century. The arousal theory is basically self explanatory. This was theorized by
P.H. Tannenbaum in 1975. He said exposure to television violence increases aggression because
violence increases excitation, or arouses viewers (Tannenbaum Zillman, 1975). This is also being
found in the recent studies, which shows the progression in the media s will to change. The social
learning theory was described by Dr. Bandura. This theory says ways of behaving are learned by
observing others, and that this is a major means by which children acquire unfamiliar behavior,
although performance of acquired behavior will depend at least in part on factors other than
acquisition (Bandura, 1973). A perfect example of this theory was when the murders occurred after the
prizefights. The disinhibition hypothesis was L. Berkowitz s investigation. This hypothesis explains
that television violence in certain circumstances will result in increased interpersonal aggression
because it weakens inhibitions against such behavior (Berkowitz, 1962).The final theory, catharsis
hypothesis was written by S. Feshbach. This theory explains that under certain conditions exposure to
television violence will reduce

Opium (Papaver somniferum)
The opium poppy has been used as a medicinal plant for centuries all over the world. The opium
poppy plant belongs to the Papaveraceae family. The scientific name of the opium poppy is Papaver
somniferum L., and it is native to Turkey. The plant has lobed leaves, milky sap and four to six petaled
flowers with several stamens surrounding the ovary. The two sepals drop off when the petals unfold.
The ovary then develops into a short, many seeded capsule that opens in dry weather. The small seeds
of the opium poppy plant are dispersed by wind. The plant has five inch purple or white flowers on

Papaver Somniferum has been used since Greek times to relieve suffering and euphoria. Records
indicate that the opium poppy has been used since the time of Mesopotamia (5000 to 4000 BC). The
records refer to the poppy and its use as opiates as medical tablets. Homer s writings indicate Greek
usage of the substance at least by 90OBC: Hippocrates made extensive use of medicinal herbs
including opium (see Britannica Online).
It is believed that the Romans probably learned of opium in the Mediterranean. Opium spread to
places all over the world. In China opium was reported as a problem during the seventeenth century.
Between World War I and H the cultivation of opium grew in Central America in the mountains. Now
the major producers and exporters of opium are Turkey and India (Britannica Online).
Opium was definitely used in more recent times as well. Before the nineteenth century there were few
painkillers available. There were few alternatives to using opiates to end suffering for dying people.
Long ago opium was not considered harmful and was available to everyone. Doctors advised taking
opiates to relieve a number of symptoms

impeach federal officials. A lot of times the legislative branch raises money and decides how that
money is spent. Some monies are used to help government officials with their campaigns. The powers

For instance, they may try to get congress members to vote against a particular bill and convince
members of the executive branch that a certain law is not that great. According to ( Volkomer; pg. 113)
the term lobbyists was first used several centuries ago in Great Britain when journalists would sit in
the lobbies of the House of Commons waiting to interview legislators. Most lobbyists are known to be
practicing lawyers and public relation experts that are affiliated with large firms in Washington. Most
are former members of congress and administrators who have worked in the executive branch. With
their knowledge and personal contacts they know how congress agencies function and that s how they
end up persuading congress members. I am sure there might be dangers to lobbyists who try to
influence legislators. Some dangers have been being prosecuted for bribery and corruption. This is
why they made rules so that these lobbyists could not engage in personal relations or interactions with
congressmen. They are not allowed to take them out to dinner, buy them expensive gifts or lavish
them with expensive trips. Back in 1946 this law was passed but had many loopholes that the
lobbyists still were able to get around so they continued to shower the congressmen with these gifts in
hopes of gaining more votes for the issue or causes

Comparing The Searchers And Touch Of Evil
Despite the numerous differences between The Searchers (1956) and Touch of Evil (1958) the
overarching themes and character similarities of the films define them as comparable. Both were
created at the beginning of a phase which saw a great shift of cinematic themes within the industry.
While these themes were changing rapidly in the late 1950s, cinematic techniques were at times
innovative and at times adherent to classical traditions. This essay contextualises these films and
illustrates the differences and similarities in style and content.
Prior to WWII, most films centered on conventional protagonists men and women who had
discernable motives and where everything was black or white. After the war a new set of viewer ideals
were established and Hollywood responded with the anti hero; characters whose actions were
sometimes questionable. In the later half of the 1950s, with the expansion of independent movie
houses, there was a dramatic shift in subject matter. Movies introduced the more taboo themes of sex,
drugs and race. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

South. Edwards has no explanation for what he s been doing in the intervening years. Both Quinlan

The Legalization Of Polygamy
The Legalization of Polygamy Sex is one of the most widely controversial topics in America. The
subject comes up in multiple situations: dinner parties, coffee dates, even when someone is
eavesdropping on a neighbor s endeavors with his mistress. Nowadays, it seems as if horror stories
about infidelity are more common than happy marriages. Cheating on a spouse is morally wrong, so
why not make it easy and legalize the act of polygamy? Polygamy is defined as willfully and
knowingly having more than one husband or wife. As unnatural as it seems, many successful people
have been in multiple marriages at once. The founder of the Mormons, Joseph Smith Jr., had up to
thirty three wives, all ranging from the ages of fourteen to sixty. One of ... Show more content on

Both men practiced polygamy, which was frowned upon greatly by the Republican Party during the

Polygamy, which punished bigamy in any territory under federal jurisdiction with a fine not exceeding
five hundred dollars, and . . . imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years (Duncan 318). This
angered the Mormons greatly and tried to gain the right for polygamy. After timeless efforts and
multiple failures, they started to practice underground. The final straw before underground families
was the Short Creek Raid in 1953. Police arrested the prophet, two men and three of their wives in a
little place known as Short Creek, right above the Grand Canyon. The two men were arrested for
cohabitation, which lead to government forces joining alliances with Utah, Arizona, and Idaho to raid
Short Creek again. The raid resulted in forty six arrests of men and women in the community (Duncan

inconspicuously as possible. There are four polygnist clans. Unfortunately, these families had a great
deal of hardships. Many children in the underground world of polygamy are home schooled, further
insulating them from the outside world. In 2000, the FLDS forced families on a wholesale basis to

Drinking Water Quality
Abstract
The experiment aimed at determining the quality of drinking water through the examination and
comparison of the level of contamination in tap water, Fiji bottled water and Dasani bottled water.
Through the experiment the researcher wanted to prove that bottled water is worth the cost. The
methods used included the ammonia test strip experiment, the chloride test strip experiment, the 4 in 1
test strip experiment, the phosphate test strip experiment and the iron test strip experiment, which
were simultaneously performed for the three water samples. The results indicated that bottled water
tend to be less contaminated as compared to tap water, thus making them safe for drinking and
effective for preventing waterborne diseases. the Dasani water had the lowest level of contamination,
followed by the Fiji water, with the tap water having the highest level of water contamination.

Laughter In Medieval Medicine
The expression, laughter is the best medicine, may be more true than many people think. Even
medieval medicine centered on humor. However, the humor of medieval times did not just come from
the court jester; and, even then, people knew humor was important to their health. One curious fact is
that the word humor in medieval times was tied to the four fluids of the body blood, phlegm, choler,
and black bile (Krsywicka). The people believed all these should be in balance in the person as well as
in their physical world (Cameron, qtd. by Krzywicka). Today most people do not associate humor to
body fluids, but they do associate it with laughter. As medicine has advanced over the years, doctors
have continued to study the humors of then, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Twisted Darkness Analysis
The Twisted Darkness
Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote and published many novels and short stories throughout his career,
including several published anonymously. More often readers find a his work to be different types of
romance followed and surrounded with twists of darkness. Based on Hawthorne s biography you can
find most of his characters and the darkness in his stories, come from personal experience. The mix of
success and failure during Hawthorne s writing career resembles parts in his story The Devil in
Manuscript leading to an unfathomable twist for his readers. Born in Salem Massachusetts in 1804,
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born into a prominent family. His ancestors were some of the earliest to
settle in the country; including Nathaniel s late relative John Hathorne who stood as a judge during the
Salem witch trials. The passing of his father to yellow fever, Nathaniel at age four was raised by his
widowed mother in mournful seclusion (Marks 1). Shortly after the death of his father, his mother
moved the family to Maine in 1815 where poetry and romance peaked Hawthorne s interest (Marks 1).
Graduating Bowdoin College at the age of twenty five, Hawthorne returned to Salem where he began
his writing allegorical stories concerning the moral values of New England (Marks 1). Nonetheless at
just twenty eight years of age, Hawthorne anonymously published his first novel Fanshawe covering
his time spent in college. Disgusted after the novel went virtually unnoticed, his

  • 2. Exploring the Role of Women in Mexico in Like Water For... Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel explains women s roles in northern Mexico during the turn of the nineteenth century. The novel takes place in northern Mexico on a family ranch where many family traditions are carried out. Also, the novel describes some of the typical foods that were prepared and fiestas that were celebrated in the Mexican culture around this time. However, the novel mainly focuses on the roles of females in Mexican society at that time. The novel goes beyond explaining women s roles and also explains what took place in the Mexican family. Throughout the novel, readers learn the role of mothers, the conflict between personal desires and tradition, and typical foods, celebrations, and family traditions that were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I thought what a wonderful way to tell a story (Mujica 38). The reader is often present in the kitchen with Esquivel when she writes about her past experiences in the kitchen. At the time Like Water for Chocolate takes place, the Mexican Revolution rages on. The book takes place during the turn of the nineteenth century, which leads to many other events in the story. The Mexican Revolution took place from 1910 to 1920, and brought many changes to the Mexican culture. In the novel, the reader can see that Gertrudis was one of the many women who participated in the Mexican Revolution, and worked her way up to being a general in the movement. Women that participated in the Mexican Revolution were sometimes found fighting beside the men, which was not something that many women did during that time. Also, during the time of the Mexican Revolution, the soldiers treated many women and young females poorly. Esquivel tells how many women were mistreated, A group of bandits attacked the ranch. They raped Chencha. Mama Elena, trying to defend her honor, suffered a strong blow to her spine and was left a paraplegic, paralyzed from the waist down (Esquivel 129). These events are described vividly from her first person perspective to better understand the situations that took place during the time that the Revolution was raging on. • 3. Apollonianism And Dionysianism In The Greek God Brothers There is two sides to everything, the good and the evil, the wise will say that it is best to have both. The similarities that both Greek god brothers, Apollo and Dionysus, have with both East of Eden brothers, Aron and Cal are identical in some aspects. An individual can choose to carry themselves with behaviors that are either Apollonian or Dionysian, a mixture of both helps find a healthy balance that will let an individual live a life at its full potential without causing damage to oneself or others. Aron and Cal have clashing personalities that create a different environment in their lives and their relationship with their father. Friedrich Nietzsche discussed the Apollonian and Dionysian philosophies in the essay Apollonianism and Dionysianism, by contrasting and comparing them he was able to create concepts that can be tied down to how an individual chooses to live and the outcome they will create with the lifestyle they carry. He believes that the two forces of Apollonianism and Dionysianism can be unified to have a diversity of characteristics in a person and that way the artist is born. Nietzsche portrays ... Later in the film, Cal decided to tell his brother Aron the truth, the truth drove him into downward spiral mental stability that could be referred to as Dionysian just as similar as Nietzsche worded it, ...the latter realized, with a shudder, that all this was not so alien to him after all, that this apollonian consciousness was but a thin veil hiding from him the whole dionysiac realm. • 4. The Environmental Disasters Of The World And Living Things... What is Missing? Pollution has plagued the world and living things within it since the industrial revolution and the development of new technology. While some people might know the effects of the environmental disasters that have occurred through the years, other do not. Maya Lin created a collaborative memorial to try to gear people s attention to the problems being faced in the environment. The collaborative memorial can easily be accessed by anyone who has a computer and internet access. For example, the BP oil spill affected a great number of living things and marine animals, due to a human error and the failure to clear up the problem efficiently. Another example is the Flint Water Crisis that caused innocent children to become deathly sick due to the lack of necessary chemicals. Another example about pollution is the Great Smog of 1952, which occurred in London, the smog lasted for five days and killed about 4,000 people. Most of the people that were affected by the smog were children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems. The memorial is meant to shine light on the living things that are going extinct around us and how we as humans have contributed to their extinction. Its purpose is to evoke empathy, better understanding, guilt, sorrow, and even rage. By creating the memorial, everyone s eyes can be open to the negative effects that our pollution has caused the world. The memorial also provides ways people can make a difference in the world where living ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Painted Door When two people are tied together by their vows, it is each of their responsibility to fulfill the happiness of one another, and if one cannot then they should not expect the same in return. Sinclair Ross s short story, The Painted Door , reveals the growing unhappiness of a farmer s wife, Ann, who feels alone as her husband John leaves home to help his father in the harsh conditions of the storm. Ann seeks comfort and companionship with another man after 7 years of feeling neglected and unhappy with her husband. The responsibility for Ann s infidelity, lays not only on Anne but John himself. In marriage there should be a foundation of trust but it is also important to commit to the duties of a marriage. John should have realized that letting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s time I was used to staying alone. This quote shows that she is often left alone, as her husband tends to the chores of the farm. Ann resents John for leaving her alone all the time. Anne is attracted to Steven by the way he describes him, he was erect, tall, square shouldered. His hair was dark and trim, his young lips curved soft and full. The descriptions that Anne uses shows her attraction towards the Steven physically. She uses much more flattering words to describe him in comparison to how she would describe John. Anne is bothered that her husband does not care about his appearance. This is displayed in the following quotation, He ll be shaved, though that s what I mean and I d like you too to spend a little time on yourself. She is comparing him to Steven, and wanting him to be more like Steven. Steven knew that Ann was lonely and needed someone with whom to talk. When Steven shows up just at the right time to help Ann with the stock, she was so glad and excited that he had come. He puts his arms around her to comfort her...and she enjoys it. Anne, in the end does love her husband. The subsequent quote shows this, ...half smiling still, his lips relaxed in the conscienceless complacency of his achievement, she understood that thus he was revealed in his entirety all there ever was or ever could be. John was the man. With him lay all the future. For tonight, slowly and contritely through the day and years to come, she would try to make amends. This shows that she indeed loves John and feels remorse for being unfaithful to him. In John being her man she is saying that she wants to be with him and not Steven. Steven is addressed in this quote as being just a guy who achieved nothing more than having sex with a married woman. the remorse is demonstrated by her saying that she will do her best to make it up to John for the rest of their ... Optimization Technique for Feature Selection and Classification Using Support Vector Machine Abstract Classification problems often have a large number of features in the data sets, but only some of them are useful for classification. Data Mining Performance gets reduced by Irrelevant and redundant features. Feature selection aims to choose a small number of relevant features to achieve similar or even better classification performance than using all features. It has two main objectives are maximizing the classification performance and minimizing the number of features. Moreover, the existing feature selection algorithms treat the task as a single objective problem. • 16. Effects Of Trauma In Judith Herman Judith Herman, M.D. with this book introduces us readers into the most impacting stories about trauma and recovery. As she tells us in the introduction, she used real cases from her professional experience working as a Doctor. She was also a Professor and a Feminist. For her, the author, Feminism has a great influence over her and her understanding of the impact that trauma has over its victims. Many women were involved on violent acts that through history showed the inequality in rights between men and women. Violence against women can be seen as a social mechanism used by men as control tool to subordinate them to a lower position compared with men. Feminism as a movement was the power behind the women who fought for equal rights in a society where they were denied them. Feminism worked as a motivator, in a sense that allowed these women to verbalize more freely their traumatic experiences. In addition to these conversations, the Feminist movement impacted social and political entities and they were able to hear the voices of these women and the acts that turned them into victims. Dr. Herman describes the traumatic experiences that distressed people suffered as atrocities. These atrocities in their context are hidden behind a veil of silence over those who suffered trauma and witnessed it as well. Horrible events is the way the author described in the book some of the causes of trauma. She identified some of these people involved as: rape survivors, combat veterans, battered women, political prisoners, survivors of vast concentration camps created by tyrants who rule nations and the survivors of small, hidden concentration camps created by tyrants who rule their homes. It is important to recognize the role of those who participate in these traumatic events. We can identify first the victim, who might be intentionally or accidentally caught up in the event. Second, we have the perpetrator or the person who intentionally causes the incident. Victims of trauma can be children, women, people with disabilities, and even men. Perpetrator could be any person who uses force or a violent act to exercise control over his victim. The author communicates in Chapter 1 some historical events which ... This was down to the economic crisis in the aftermath of the Wall Street Crash, which weakened the Weimar Republic by discrediting its policies, consequently making the democratic politics less popular. Therefore, the SA was one of the main reasons for the growth of the Nazi Party, although it was not the most important. Finally, the growth of the Nazi party would have never happened without the vital role played by the fear of Communism. Ordinary Germans, particularly businessmen and farmers, were frightened of the Communists taking over in their own country. Communists didn t believe in religion, so this worried churchgoers too. From the start, Hitler said he would fight Communism and he sent his own private army, the SA, to fight with Communists hence by 1932, persistent street violence between the extremists of left and right was taking hold in cities and in the month of July 1932 alone, 86 people were killed as a result of these political fights. Hitler gained much support from the middle and upper classes, which included businessmen, landowners, and factory owners and so on because he promised to deal with the Communist threat. • 31. Comparing The Searchers And Touch Of Evil Despite the numerous differences between The Searchers (1956) and Touch of Evil (1958) the overarching themes and character similarities of the films define them as comparable. Both were created at the beginning of a phase which saw a great shift of cinematic themes within the industry. While these themes were changing rapidly in the late 1950s, cinematic techniques were at times innovative and at times adherent to classical traditions. This essay contextualises these films and illustrates the differences and similarities in style and content. Prior to WWII, most films centered on conventional protagonists men and women who had discernable motives and where everything was black or white. After the war a new set of viewer ideals were established and Hollywood responded with the anti hero; characters whose actions were sometimes questionable. In the later half of the 1950s, with the expansion of independent movie houses, there was a dramatic shift in subject matter. Movies introduced the more taboo themes of sex, drugs and race. ... In The Searchers, director John Ford begins the film several years after the end of the Civil War, a war in which Edwards has fought for the losing side the South. Edwards has no explanation for what he s been doing in the intervening years. Both Quinlan and Edwards are considered heroic, assuredly, but there is no reason for the viewer to think they are strong moral characters. • 32. The Legalization Of Polygamy The Legalization of Polygamy Sex is one of the most widely controversial topics in America. The subject comes up in multiple situations: dinner parties, coffee dates, even when someone is eavesdropping on a neighbor s endeavors with his mistress. Nowadays, it seems as if horror stories about infidelity are more common than happy marriages. Cheating on a spouse is morally wrong, so why not make it easy and legalize the act of polygamy? Polygamy is defined as willfully and knowingly having more than one husband or wife. As unnatural as it seems, many successful people have been in multiple marriages at once. The founder of the Mormons, Joseph Smith Jr., had up to thirty three wives, all ranging from the ages of fourteen to sixty. One of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both men practiced polygamy, which was frowned upon greatly by the Republican Party during the Civil War. In 1862, Senator Justin Morrill succeeded in passing the Morrill Act for the Suppression of Polygamy, which punished bigamy in any territory under federal jurisdiction with a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars, and . . . imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years (Duncan 318). This angered the Mormons greatly and tried to gain the right for polygamy. After timeless efforts and multiple failures, they started to practice underground. The final straw before underground families was the Short Creek Raid in 1953. Police arrested the prophet, two men and three of their wives in a little place known as Short Creek, right above the Grand Canyon. The two men were arrested for cohabitation, which lead to government forces joining alliances with Utah, Arizona, and Idaho to raid Short Creek again. The raid resulted in forty six arrests of men and women in the community (Duncan 321). Following the raid, numerous families had to go into hiding and live their lives as inconspicuously as possible. There are four polygnist clans. Unfortunately, these families had a great deal of hardships. Many children in the underground world of polygamy are home schooled, further insulating them from the outside world. In 2000, the FLDS forced families on a wholesale basis to remove their children from kindergarten through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Laughter In Medieval Medicine The expression, laughter is the best medicine, may be more true than many people think. Even medieval medicine centered on humor. However, the humor of medieval times did not just come from the court jester; and, even then, people knew humor was important to their health. One curious fact is that the word humor in medieval times was tied to the four fluids of the body blood, phlegm, choler, and black bile (Krsywicka). The people believed all these should be in balance in the person as well as in their physical world (Cameron, qtd. by Krzywicka). Today most people do not associate humor to body fluids, but they do associate it with laughter. As medicine has advanced over the years, doctors have continued to study the humors of then, ...
