Effect Of Sucrose Concentration On Potato Osmosis
Research question:
What is the Osmolarity (solute concentration) of potato tubers deduce by measuring the loss or gain
in mass of samples immersed in sucrose solutions of different concentrations for 24 hours? The
concentrations of sucrose solution are 0.0mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3), 0.2mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3), 0.4mol
гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3), 0.6mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3), 0.8mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3), and 1.0 mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^(
3).
Hypothesis:
When plant tissues are immersed in sucrose solutions of different concentration, the cells will gain
or lose water by osmosis and therefore change in size and mass. If the potato samples are immersed
with hypertonic solution, the mass of samples will be reduced as the hypertonic solution has a higher
solute concentration which makes the water move towards it. If the potato ... Show more content on

Osmosis is the passive trend of a fluid, usually water, to pass through partially permeable membrane
into a higher concentration of sucrose to equalize the concentrations of solution on either side of
the membrane. Factors affecting the rate of osmosis include temperature, surface area, and size of
particles and concentration of the sucrose.
Potatoes are generally grown from other potatoes by planting another piece of potato. This planted
potato has several slightly recessed, dormant buds on the surface which will sprout at the right
condition and the sprouts can develop into independent plant. The planted potato provides the new
sprout or seedling with nutrition from its supply of stored starch. After a seed is planted, the main
stem and first leaves appear above ground. The root system progresses quickly and begins to absorb
nutrients. The top, where it has most leaves of the plant puts on a lot of growth. Then the growing
of main stem of the plant ends producing a flower bud. When this happens, the plant will have
many leaves causing them to eventually produce more nutrients than the plant needs, making
excess energy to channel downward to be stored in the tubers which are thick, short, underground
stems. They are the

U.s. Maritime Transportation Security Act
Massport has enacted several policies and procedures to tighten security and better secure their
various waterfront terminals. These policies include, but may not be limited to:
1. Transportation Worker Identification Credential: Massport has mandated the use of the
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and Massport Maritime Credentials for all
workers entering Conley Terminal and Black Falcon Cruise Terminal. Required by the Maritime
Transportation Security Act, TWIC is a threat assessment tool used to vet workers who require
unescorted access to secure maritime facilities, vessels and other critical assets (e.g. cyber systems).
Types of workers include, but may not be limited to, U.S. Coast Guard documented mariners, port
and terminal operators, truckers, equipment maintenance personnel and port security personnel.
Following a successful background check, workers are issued an identification which contains key
employee information including name, a photo and biometric data. Personnel requesting a
Massport Maritime Credential must present a TWIC card at the time of their request.
Massachusetts currently supports five TWIC enrollment locations. They are located in Pocasset,
Brockton, Boston, Worcester and Springfield.
2. Non Intrusive Inspection Program: Safeguarding U.S. borders requires the use of available and
emerging technology to detect contraband and radiological material, deny entry when warranted
and deter criminal or terrorist

A Report On The Stirling Engine
The Stirling engine, noted for its high efficiency, converts heat energy to mechanical work. A
typical Stirling cycle consists of four phases compressing cool gas, heating the gas, expanding the
hot gas, and finally cooling the gas before repeating the cycle. The engines can run on heat from
solar, geothermal, biological, nuclear sources or waste heat from industrial processes, can be built
to run quietly and don t produce any emissions. In contrast to other solutions used in solar thermal
technology, Stirling engines don t have an inherent mechanism for storing heat. Stirling engine
based combined heat and power plant (CHP) fuelled with biomass represents a technological
breakthrough within onsite renewable energy generation. A system working on biofuel is a step
towards utilisation of clean energy source. In biomass type wood chips and waste wood pallets are
used which is environment friendly.
Ideal Stirling Cycle
The Stirling cycle is a thermodynamic cycle that describes the general class of Stirling devices.
This includes the original Stirling engine that was invented, developed and patented in 1816 by
Reverend Dr. Robert Stirling with help from his brother, an engineer [1]. The ideal Stirling
Cycle consists of 4 individual processes with end points as marked in the Fig. 1[2]. Here the
isothermal compression stroke (process 1в†’2) takes place by removing heat, Q12, from the
working fluid in order to keep the temperature at a constant low value, TC. Figure 1: p V

Solar Renewable Energy System
In brewing industry, 80% of overall final energy consumption is used in the form of thermal energy
where solar thermal can be used for brewing processes as below: steam generation, malting process,
stopping germination of grains, air cooling, conservation with hot air, power supplying of washing
machines, wither and kiln processes. Malting plants and breweries consume heatfor their thermally
driven processes at temperature level ranges between 25В°C to 120В°C. It seems feasible to supply
heat at this temperature level which is not higher than the actual amount required but in reality the
it is often decided by the consumer which needs the highest temperature. The integration of solar
renewable energysystem is necessary to reduce the exergy losses and CO2 emissions [17,21,24,25].
To utilize the organic matter from brewing residues, optimized heat recovery can supply its thermal
energy demand over resources. Theoretically, the full energy potential is not utilized so the
pathway is the conventional means of energy. However, the conversion of heat from energy gained
from renewable energy resources can ensure environment friendly beer production process for
future. To increase the overall energy efficiency, the integration of solar heat energy gained from
solar thermal collector technologies can be considered as a prospective alternative to fulfill the
demands of typical low temperature process heat.

American Mariners History
The early modern sea particularly the Atlantic can be characterized as a space of great instability. It
was here that communication and trade between nations became easily accessible, but the lack of
uniform maritime regulations and commercial competition fostered hostility between states,
resulting in prolonged periods of war. One distinct product of this environment was pirates, who
took to the high seas in search of ships to illegally capture and raid of their goods. For the great
maritime nations of the 16th to 18th centuries, pirates were simply criminals that threatened the
progress of the world economy, but history has shown that they were much more complex figures.
At the same time as they were violent, ruthless, and defiant outlaws,... Show more content on

The reasons for becoming or turning pirate have been widely theorized, and it seems as though a
multitude of social, political, and economic factors were at play. On an individual level, the
dangerous and almost inevitably fatal nature of piracy makes it improbable that one would join a
crew if they felt as though they had other alternatives. Instead, it is more likely that piracy was a
last resort refuge for a dejected class of sailors who did not fit in with normative cultural standards,
but could not escape the fact that society dictated that they must work to survive regardless.
Because piracy stemmed from a distinctly maritime class and not the general landed population, it
is easier to understand why it may have been seen as a viable option. These men were already
familiar with the principles of teamwork, harmony, and trust that were
2
necessary to survive on a ship, and their lengthy voyages often made them ill adjusted to life on
land. There are two main reasons why a sailor would have crossed the line between legal and
illegal maritime service: perceived injustice and peacetime layoffs. Unlike the pirate ship, both navy
and merchant ships were more dictatorial than democratic; their captains were not

It Was All Started With A Boy
...it was all started by a mouse (Smith 41). But it actually all started with a boy. On December
5th, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois. Father, Elias Disney, and mother, Flora Call Disney, had a son that
they named, Walter Elias Disney. He was one of five children, three boys; Herbert, Raymond, and
Roy, and one girl, Ruth. After the birth of Walt, the family moved to Marceline, Missouri where
they had a farm. Walt first got his inspirations of drawing through the environment around him.
Being wrapped around animals and the nature aspects on a farm, it gave Walt at the early age of

After returning from his service in France, Walt pursued a career in commercial art instead of
getting a high school diploma, leading to his experiments in animation. He first worked for
Pesman Rubin Commercial Art Studio where he was designing letterhead and advertisements.
After getting laid off, he found another job at the Kansas City Film Ad Company, where he was
educated about animation, producing advertisements prior the movies would begin. He later
departed the Film Ad Company in May 1922 with confidence in starting Laugh O Gram Films,
where he created Alice s Wonderland. Later, making a series of these films, known, as the Alice
Comedies. Walt s company last for one year and a half and went bankrupt in July 1923. Unlike
most people, Walt Disneydidn t give up. Instead, he left Kansas City and headed to Hollywood.
At this point, Walt was completely broke. All he had was a loan of $500 from his uncle and his
faithful brother, Roy, by his side. With faith, Walt and Roy started the Disney Brothers Studio.
They were able to attain a distributor of New York to release the Alice Comedies, which became
a high success with popularity. Soon after, it led to the growth in Disney s staff members along
with a brand new studio. In 1927, the New York distributor, Charles Mintz, who had hired all of
Disney s animators, refused a contract to have Walt as his worker and Universal Studios owning

Florida International University is an amazing school but affording it is not easy, especially due
to my circumstances. My mother is a single mother of four children, me being the oldest, each
child five to seven years apart. She is a certified nursing assistant and only has some college
completed. My mom had to put her life on hold, sacrificing her educationto take care of her
children. She was not born in the United States, but in Haiti. After my aunt there is not much family
that lives in the United States, instead they live in Haiti. This scholarship would be a blessing,
having a positive impact on my education and life. Financially, it will help my pay for the
schooling I need to accomplish my goals that I wish to pursue at Florida International University.

Discuss how the leadership talent pipeline at Ecolab was critical to executing its business strategy.
The CEO and executives got together and came up with a strategy that grows the company. They
had to capitalize on success to capture greater share in markets. What this mean is they had to go
a step higher than where the company currently stands. I think because they don t want to get
comfortable and stuck and can t grow. They also are looking for new opportunities for the
company to expand. With this being said they are trying to develop a broader range of cleaning and
sanitizing products. They want to keep up with competition and exceed them. I think once they got

To me, new ideas are what grow the company.
Discuss the critical elements of the talent pipeline model at Ecolab. a. Analysis of the number of
new associates who would be necessary to lead the workforce would be a critical element.
Basically they were preparing for the growth of the company by making sure the management team
and leaders. So they had to promote within the company and then bring in new employees to
train. They would also hire from outside the company but why do that if you have qualified
individuals at the company. It will cost less and probably be more beneficial to the company. b.
Expanding recruiting efforts which was usually done by the HR department. If they are expanding
they know they are going to have to use their resources because they want to make sure they are
hiring the best of the best. c. Redefining high potential was also a critical element. They aren t just
basing it on the performance but on capability, ambition and commitment. Just because they
perform their jobs well doesn t mean they could take on the new roles. d. Talent council is basically
the CEO and executive that s watching and seeing who is growing. They are pushing the managers
so they can continue to push employees which will continue to grow the business.

Personal Narrative-Kabbalat Shabbat

Bruchim habaim Woodlynde School. Which means welcome Woodlynde School. Just about
eight short years I ago I was asked if I was ready for the experience of a lifetime, by my parents. I
said yes. It was only the summer before fifth grade that I went on a journey which was attending
overnight camp at Camp Ramah in the Poconos. Before I arrived, I was happy as can be. But,
when I arrived at the most meaningful place in the world, 2618 Upper Woods Road, Lakewood
PA I constantly balled my eyes out. I was a mess because I was deeply homesick. It was a new
environment. Throughout the experience of my initial summer I continued to be deeply homesick,
but somehow with the friends I had made and the incredible counselors I had enjoyed the summer.
Surprisingly, out of the four weeks of being a wreck I ended up loving Ramah, and made the
choice to continue to be a camper the following summer which was the best choice I ever made.

Kabbalat Shabbat is Friday night services the start of Shabbat. Shabbat is a Jewish holiday that
happens every Friday night through Saturday until sundown. The final Kabbalat Shabbat as a
camper for me was the most meaningful. My age group had our chance to perform each dance
from our past summers. Each summer the age group has to learn and perform a dance on a
Friday night. On the final Friday night my age group performed all of our dances that we learn
over the pass summers. I had the feeling of the complete devastation since it was the final day of
camp. Another, meaningful part of Shabbat is when we have tish. Tish is when campers will
chant songs in Hebrew it is when everyone shows their happiness that Shabbat has arrived. The
final Tish that I was a part of I had the opportunity to hand down a song that I lead throughout the

corn, bananas, coffee, beans, and chickens (The World Fact book, Economy). In the past few
years Guatemala is experiencing drought and it is affecting the country s farming capabilities.
Recent statistics gathered by VoaNews estimate about 900,000 individuals are troubled by this
issue. Like many matters, this has caused a chain reaction resulting in an increase of
unemployment. Although a challenge, I envision a possible business opportunity to alter this
effect. A strategy that came into mind was a tool utilized to decrease the amount of water
irrigated. There is currently a watering system used for a similar purpose called the Tree T Pee
(Tree T Pee Site). It would be a great approach to invest and incorporate a modification that can be
used in lands abroad like Guatemala. It could also increase the employment rate and create new
jobs. Despite the downfalls, Guatemala continues to be well known for its beauty and culture that
comes from the indigenous people. For example, one of the most important national symbols in

The Reflection Of The Sugar Cubes
Once upon a time, there was a sugar cube. One day it caught a glimpse of itself in a silver
teaspoon. After seeing it s reflection, it became very curious about itself and began to wonder
about existence and it s purpose in life. The little piece of sugar thought for a long time about
how to find the answer. It looked to the bowl that had held it and kept it safe all it s life. Who
better to pose this question to? So it called out to the sugar bowl. Sugarbowl, what am I? The sugar
bowl replied You are a square piece of sweetener. You have a limited time until you become stale
and crumble into dust. Learn how to sweeten, that is your only purpose in this life. So the sugar
cube practiced being sweet and became so sparkly with sweetnessyou could almost see a light
glowing inside the cube. Becoming sparkly was helping the other cubes that shared the sugar
bowl. The sparkly cube always had positive words for the other cubes and encouraged them to
become as sweet as they could. The cube knew it was a duty to serve the bowl of cubes and was
humble in doing so. It was careful about not doing harm even when some of them blamed the
sparkly cube. Even when it knew about this negative talk, the cube saw everything in itself and
itself in everything so wanted for each cube what it wanted for itself. The sparkly cube was the
same inwardly as it was outwardly. Once you knew the sparkly cube, you knew it was for real.
You could trust it because its words always reflected its actions.

The Idea Of Eliminating Waste, Also Known As Muda, From
The idea of eliminating waste, also known as muda, from various processes has been sought after
and practiced for centuries. Waiting for a product that isn t being processed wastes time, excess
inventory wastes space, and underutilization of employees wastes creativity. Lean may seem
somewhat new, considering it was only formally identified in the 1990 s, however, there are now
many businesses that put emphasis on the importance of lean. Some companies, such as Boeing,
even have organizations focused on the implementation of lean. During the Boeing tour, it was
evident that the company has put a lot of effort into incorporating lean systems into many of its

One example would be the color coded vests employees wear. Blue vests represent materials
management, brown is leadership, green is quality, so on and so forth. This makes it much
easier to spot an employee from any function within Boeing, which eliminates wasted time. Our
in class discussion about Boeing s standardization of tool boxes also reappeared during the
Boeing tour. Though it hasn t been fully implemented yet, Boeing has required its employees to
use the tool boxes provided by Boeing every day to standardize work methods. This ensures that
the quality of work and methods used are consistent. Boeing further exhibited its commitment to
the continuous improvement of its systems by forming a team dedicated to the planning and
implementation of lean. Boeing has been recognized as a leader in lean innovations, but there
are still many other companies striving towards leaner processes. According to a recent news
article, GE Healthcare has implemented a very interesting use of new technology in its repair
operations center in Milwaukee. With the use of self driving warehouse vehicles called OTTO ,
GE has been able to reduce the size of its repair stations by 40%, which means a sizeable cut in

The Knee Jerk Reaction Of The World
As unique as every human being is entering and making their impact on the world, man
categorizes himself marking key differences in each of these categories. When someone is asked
who they are they usually have trouble defining themselves. Some may say they are Christian,
Jewish, Muslim, Latino, Caucasian, African American, etc. The knee jerk reaction of how we
define ourselves is too simplistic as we have several different aspects that compose who each of
us are. Einfeld says it best when he classifies all these different aspects as people being defined, on

revenues of over $19 billion in 2015. Their headquarters are in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and
is a family oriented department store that sells national brands and private label merchandise of
apparel, shoes, accessories, and housewares. Kohl s competes with other department stores and
discount stores for the middle income shopping target market. The names brand products that Kohl

they can offer lower prices than their department storecompetitors can. Kohl s low cost and higher
margins are the result of lean staffing, state of the art management information systems, and
creating operating efficiencies by centralizing advertising, buying and distribution. In 1962,
Kohl s initially started as a supermarket in Wisconsin. In 1967, the company diversified into

people were affected by the terrorist attacks. Since then airport security has changed as well as
police techniques. When police are at work they use many techniques to decrease their suspect

profilingis the use of raceor ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an

Racial profiling in many cases has altered lives and destroyed families. Racial profiling is one
reason why many African American and other minorities sit in prisons across the nation. Many
of these people were guilty until proven innocent, instead of the other way around. For example
Cornelius Dupree Jr. was a Texas man who was accused of rape. Court documents stated that a
26 year old woman and a male friend were robbed at gunpoint by two black men in the parking
lot of a Dallas liquor store in November 1979. The two men ordered the couple to drive, they
forced the man out of the car and took the women to a nearby park where they raped her and
stole her fur coat. Cornelius Dupree and another man Anthony Massigill were arrested in
December 1979, after the lady picked their photos out of a photo lineup. Both men had no clue
who the other one was, they were unable to identify each other. Mr. Dupree was sentenced in
1979 for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced with 75 years in prison.
He lost his job, his family, and eventually his house and his car. His case was overturned due to
DNA testing in 2011 (Stanley et al., 2008). Although racial profiling has many defects, it is
necessary to keep our communities safe. The airport is where racial profiling is used the most.

John Wayne As An Example Of A Revisionist Western Film
The Western genre been highly prevalent in Hollywood films for decades. Beginning with The
Great Train Robbery in 1903, Western films have gained international many parts of Europe and
Mexico in addition to the United States. One classic example of a Western feature (full length) film
is True Grit (1969), which stars John Wayneas the strong, memorable protagonist, Rooster Cogburn.
Although the film follows many filmic conventions regarding the formula of the Westerngenre, it
also defies certain conventions, thus serving as an example of a revisionist Western. These
qualities also carry over into the recent remake, True Grit(2010), which contains the same plot as
the original while making use of modern cinematic techniques in order to make the film more
exciting, dramatic and accessible for a modern audience. Prior to the release of True Grit (1969),
John Wayne had played starring roles in countless other Western films, including Stagecoach (1939)
and The Searchers (1956). By the 1960s, John Wayne gained vast recognition among many
audiences as the definitive celluloid icon of the American Western. John Wayne?s popularity within
Hollywood grew largely during the 1950s, during the rise of revisionist western films. In addition,
the film?s setting is consistent with previous films in the genre. A small portion of the plot is set in
a small town in Arkansas, while the bulk is set in the sporadically populated, mountainous Indian
Territory. There are several scenes in which

Further, in order to lower the recidivism rate, ex convicts must receive some sort of help to
successfully reintegrate into society upon release. The successful rehabilitation of convicted
criminals and the successful prisoner reintegration into society would ultimately lead to a safer
and more capable society by lowering the recidivism rate, making those the policy goals and
outcomes the ones that matter most. I chose to study Norway s prison policy because I have
heard that Norway has the most humane prisons in the world and I wished to research what that
meant and how successful those humane policies really are. Norway is worth looking at because
their recidivism rate is very low, suggesting that their prison policy is successful. According to the
World Prison Brief, Institute for Criminal Policy Research, in 2016, the incarceration rate in

Analysis Of The Movie The Night By F. Scott Fitzgerald...
Dilsey Gibson, a black woman, serves as a mother figure for the children and a caretaker for the
rest of the family. Dilsey feels as though she really is a part of the family. However, Mrs.
Compson and a grown up Jason disagree and feel that she is easily replaceable. It goes against
community and identity in the South to have a black woman step out of place, and Jason feels
that she does step out of place quite often. Dilsey is shown as a stabilizer when she defends Miss
Quentin. Faulkner writes, [Mrs. Compson] come on and lay down now, she said. I find her in ten
minutes. Mrs. Compson shook her off. Find the note, she said. Quentin left a note when he did it
(283). This is showing that Dilsey can figure Mrs. Compson out and wants to protect her. She
believes that Miss Quentin will come back and wants to help spare Mrs. Compson some heartache.
Even though Mrs. Compson treats her poorly, she still looks out for her. I believe that at this time
in the South, black peopleknew white peoplebetter than white people knew black people. White
people could not see past the prejudice. Dilsey also stabilizes the house when she looks after
Miss Quentin. For example, Dilsey says to Jason, Well, you tend to yo business and let her
lone... I ll take keer of her ef you n Miss Cahline ll let me (254). Dilsey steps in and takes charge
when it comes to carrying for the children. She knows that she is one of the few people that can

Treasure Island Futility Of Desire Essay
Treasure Island, Piracy, and the Futility of Desire Fifteen men on the dead man s chest yo ho ho,
and a bottle of rum! Drink and the devil had done for the rest yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum! This
is what the former sea captain, Billy Bones, warbled while drunk on rum in the novel Treasure
Island. In Treasure Island a young boy and some pirates go hunting for a dead man s buried
treasure, and they basically come up empty handed in the end, even after killing others to find it.
Based on the pirates actions, attitudes, and greediness in Treasure Island as well as in the real
world, Stevenson is trying to indicate the futility of desire. The pirates actions majorly portray the
ineffectiveness of want. In the novel it explains As for Ben Gunn, he got ВЈ1,000, which he spent
or lost in three weeks, or, to be more exact, in nineteen days, for he was back begging on the
twentieth. Ben Gunn s action, which was spending all of his earned money, basically turned all of
his time and effort in getting that cash into nothing. He s mainly right back where he started. In
the real world if you committed any of the deadly actions of a pirate you could be executed,
making the job seem much less worth doing. Ultimately, partaking in the acts of piracygive you

case of what goes around comes back around. Many times, if treated badly by their captain, the
lower ranked pirates would rebel from their master and either leave with all the treasure or simply
kill the captain. This seems like another case of what goes around comes back around, and sadly

A Midsummer s Night Dream Essay
Everyone at one point or another judges someone else and makes the wrong assumption. People
have that habit, but sometimes people can fool others. After all, people dress and act how they
want to look to others. In the Elizabethan era romantic comedy A Midsummer s Night Dream,
William Shakespeare suggests the theme that people have hidden layers and disguises which can
lead others to foolish choices. People can fool other people, occasionally with the intent of mischief
or a common mistake. When Puck, a usually mischievous fairy, wants to fulfill his lord Oberon s
wishes without deviation, the action reveals another side of the fairy. However with all the good
intent, Puck still mistakes Lysander for Demetrius. As Oberon speaks the mistake... Show more

Bottom has the characteristics necessary of an actor which includes the ability to alter the
audience s perception. When Bottom first shows his bravado, his only concern becomes the
idea of portraying his abilities as an excellent actor, when he cries That will ask come tears in the
true performing of it: if I do it, let the audience look to their eyes; I will move storms, I will
condole in some measure... This is Ercle s vein, a tyrant s vein, a lover is more condoling (I. ii.
23 26. 38 40). However Bottom shows another side to himself to only the few in which he
chooses. When Shakespeare shows the audience this side of Bottom, he also uncovers that
people who have the ability to change other s perception of them have power over others to
influence them and fool them. The silly and childish actor becomes more solemn and serious in
contrast when he relies to Quince s question in regard to his disappearance, in return replies,
Masters, I am to discourse wonders. But ask me not what; for, if I tell you, I am no true Athenian.
I will tell you everything right as it fell out (IV. ii. 29 31). Bottom refrains from recounting the

Comparing The Scarlet Letter, Flowers, And The Comet
For centuries, humans have related nature to their lives in any way, shape, or form as a way of
coping with or understanding their current situations. No matter how intricate or complex human
nature is, we, as humans, still use nature and the colors presented in nature to explain events or
fears. Within the novelThe Scarlet Letter, flowers, the land on which the cabin lies, clothing and
their colors, the woods, and the comet are used to further explain situations in which characters

The land on which Hester s cabin lies is also a direct parallel to Hester and her life. The test
states, It had been built by an earlier settler, and abandoned, because the soil about it was too
sterile for cultivation, (Hawthorne 121). This quotation proves that the land was deemed
infertile and no one believed that anything could be grown. However, Hester manages to grow a
few small plants. Even from a few plants, she still managed to grow something from what was
given to her. This same idea is repeated throughout her life. After, having Pearl, she was an
outcast, yet she still was able to make herself into a well known talented embroideress. She was
also still able to support herself and Pearl even though she was given nothing but shame. This
proves that Hester is not what the Puritanical society sees her as. She is more than they think she
is because, just as the infertile land, she was able to make something from nothing. Hester and
Pearl s clothing and color of the clothing also reveals their true position in society. Their strict
society wears quite basic clothing which has only begun to be adorned with Hester s embroidery.
Right from the beginning, Hester shows that she is defiant, no matter the circumstances which she
is under. When she emerges from the jail, the red letter immediately proves that she does not
follow societal norms. The novel states, On the breast of her gown, in

Rape Culture In Australia
Five rugby league players have consequently been charged with raping and sexually assaulting a
mildly disabled 18 year old woman at a sevens tournament, none of them faced charges. (English,
2004). Apparently, Some of the boys love a bun. Gang banging is nothing new for our club or the
rugby league, reported a player from the Canterbury Bulldogs, an Australian Rugby league team
(English, 2004). The frequency of rapeallegations and the lack of consequence for athletes is
reflected in Australian culture. Normal citizens and elite sportsman have many similarities that may
be leading to the high amount of rapes in Australia. Confusion on what rape is, male perception of
masculinity, rapes portrayal in the media, and the objectification of women are possibly leading to
high levels of rape by both groups. Rape culture in Australian athletic institutions and within the
general public are highly parallel; both have... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sports are insinuated into the daily lives of Australian citizens (Rowe, 2018). So, when the
media and sports coverage is combined, the news is quickly seen by Australians. When the
Sydney Harold posted a story about an AFL player s rape trial the article was only up for 23
minutes around 10 pm, and in that time around 6,000 views had occurred (Krien, 2013).
Continuous articles of athletes getting away with rape are not just seen by the public, but by other
athletes as well. If there is no consequence to an action, then it can be seen as acceptable. When the
Canterbury Bulldogs had six players accused of assaulting a twenty year old in a hotel pool, the
story had to make the news (English, 2004). Despite the entire country seeing the victim s story, the
players got off without charge (English, 2004). Instances like this show that even under immense

The Shame of the Nation by Jonathan Kozol
I. Analysis of the mechanics of the book. If anyone in the United States were asked, What is the
best part about living in this country?, most people would answer equality . The United States is
built on and known for the equality among its citizens and is often referred to as the melting pot .
After reading Jonathan Kozols, The Shame of the Nation, equality is nonexistent within the
schools he has gone to, and has been employed through. With his travels, expert testimony and
personal stories gathered from the people within the community and schools, he shows the exact
opposite of equality. Minority schools being his main focus, he discusses the inequalities these
students endure and truly opens up your eyes to just how awful these minority schools have it.
Jonathan Kozol is successful in his writing of The Shame of the Nation, and makes himself a
voice for these minority schools that are denied of their voices. The way Kozol chooses to
organize his book is very effective. It has a topical way of organization with a touch of
chronological usage through the book. Instead of just starting right into his points that he strives
to make, he begins the book with a little history about himself and how he ended up in the
position of traveling to these different schools. This is extremely necessary to the book, without it
the reader would have no idea as to why he chose to do his observations and how he came to love
what he does. Knowing that he has the experience of teaching

The And The Industrial Man
Since the founding of America, no singular method of governmental role has been adopted. The
concept of governmental role in American society is a subjective point. While some believe in a
strong government that controls and expands its role over many aspects of American society, others
believe that limiting governmentpower is necessary to having a thriving society and economy. Clark
Kerr wrote the document Industrialism and the Industrial Man which highlights and explains the
perspective of having a centralized government in power. Contrastingly, Capitalism and Freedom,
written by Milton Friedman is in support of a limited government and placing a check on
concentrated power. Both documents reflect the two different styles of government and provide
context to their functions and the application of their duties. In Industrialism and the Industrial
Man, Clark Kerr depicts the concept of an industrial society characterized by a government that has
a wide range of activities and functions it controls. In this industrial society, the government
provides and controls technology, infrastructure, urban development, military, international
relations, education, parks, healthcare, and many other services to society. The government also
keeps order of the economy, controlling the labor and product markets. Even though this big
government has many functions and controls a large sector of society, Kerr explains that the
freedom and personal liberty of the people will not be placed in

Complex Part Of The Brain Essay
The brain is a very complex part of the human anatomy. It has two hemispheres which control
different parts of the body and mental processes like breathing, thinking, and sleeping. The cerebral
cortex, which surrounds the two hemispheres, is just one of these complex areas of the brain
(Huffman, 2005, p.67). This part of the brainhas different functions for motor and sensory data.
Four lobes are the part of the brain are that is covered. These lobes have extremely important
participating roles in the human system, and without them the body would be unable to do
mundane tasks like talking or memorization (Huffman, 2005, p.68). These help to control more
functions and sending various messages to parts of the body. Continually, the two hemispheres of
the brain have four specific sections which control certain aspects of the brain: frontal lobe, parietal
lobe, temporal lobe, and occipital lobe.

The frontal lobes, located near the top of the brain, receives and creates messages from the other

speech production(Huffman,2005, p.68). The frontal lobe influences our emotions, it also
effects our social behavior and how we interact with others (Lobes of the brain, 2014). The
frontal lobes, for they are so close to the front of the skull, are the most likely to injure (Lobes of
the brain, 2014). This is not good because the frontal lobes helps with self awareness and studies

The Paradox Of Change In Ray Bradbury s Dandelion Wine
The Paradox of Change
Change is a force which is ever present in the universe, and an individual is never free from its
effects; change will continuously mold the individual by challenging its perception of its
surroundings and itself. In many ways, change causes development and maturity, yet it also
causes decline and decay. Change is constant. However, the paradox of change is often difficult to
accept, and people will fight with its reality throughout their lifetimes: friends will come and go,
epiphanies and advances will arrive, and things will never quite be like they used to be. The
struggle between change and the individual is a recurring part of Ray Bradbury s Dandelion Wine.
This relationship shows not only through the main character, Doug Spaulding, but also through
those around him. Doug and the rest of Green Town show how people contend with changes in that
which they know, those whom they know, and even themselves.
Many of Doug s favorite parts of Green Town become altered in some way during the summer of
1928. No more trolley. Bus starts to run tomorrow. Going to retire me with a pension, they are
(Bradbury 98). After Mr. Tridden tells them that the trolley is shutting down, Doug protests by
pointing out that a bus doesn t have the charm of the trolley. Later on, a woman thwarts an
attempted murder by the town s serial killer, The Lonely One . As Doug, Tom, and Charlie reflect
upon seeing the paramedics take Lonely One in on a stretcher, they lament the fact that there will
be no more killings to create excitement around town. Charlie rants to Tom, This town used to have
some good stuff in it up until about twelve o clock last night. From here on, we re vanilla junket
(Bradbury 178). They even try to convince themselves that the man on the stretcher wasn t the
Lonely One. Regardless of how unpleasant or cumbersome certain aspects of the town were, the
kids still disliked their altercation, and they struggled with everything beginning and ending around
them.
The people of Green Town repeatedly grappled with very personal changes to those whom they
were familiar with. This contention is very prevalent within Doug when he hears that his friend,

Relationship Between Sexuality And Identity
Discuss the relationship between sexuality and identity in Fun home.
This essay will be examining the relationship between sexuality and identity in the book, Fun
Home (2006) by Alison Bechdel. Bechdel s memoir Fun Home explores the way gender and sexual
identity play important roles in the world. It frames the discovery that Bechdel when she was a
young girl realised she was a lesbian, whilst at the same time finding out that her father is also
homosexual and had been sexually active with males throughout his marriage to her mother,
destroying their relationship. Through the use of visual comic pictures and writing, the books
central themes challenge cultural norms of sexual and gender identity. It questions how associated
a daughters open lesbian identity is with her fathers closeted gay one. Bechdel s sexual discovery
throughout the book, is always linked to her father Bruces sexual identity and it is possible to say
that it had an effect on her own sexuality. She provides the reader with a sample of the identity
struggle both her and her father suffered with to illustrate the experience they both had. The images
within the text give only a small amount of information, where as the text is the most important
element. This essay will explore whether sexuality and identity can be seperated, or whether your

Should Naps Be Allowed In Schools
It is common for students to be tired when they arrive to school everyday whether it is a Monday
or the first day back from a long break. I believe that middle and high schools should have
designated times for students to be able to take short naps because it helps students refocus. A
recent study showed that students do not fully wake up until around 10:30 A.M. proving that
schools start way too early for them to absorb all the knowledge given to them. The main goal of
a school is to educate their pupils but with the majority of them too tired to focus, the goal cannot
be reached. A short while ago, a study was conducted to see if naps really did affect the attention

Personal Team Effectiveness Individual Assessment
Introduction
Bruce W. Tuckman is an educational psychologist from Princeton University. In 1960 s, he

Tuckman s model explains that as the team s growth, ability and building the relationship. However,
this is the most frequently cited if compared to the other models of group development that have

Indians and thus helping their trade efforts. The Dutch made great efforts to avoid conflict which
sadly ended as a governor requested payment from Algonquian Indians which led to two colonists
being murdered creating high tensions between New Netherlands and the Indians. As Kieft
murdered eighty Indians many other river tribes were outraged and unleashed attacks on the
settlements around New Amsterdam. To deal with this the Dutch hired Captain John Hill who with
merciless tactics defeated the Algonquians and severely reduced their

Paulo Freire s Perceptual Activity
Paulo Freire discusses the concept of perceptual activity in his article The Importace Of the Act
of Reading. Unlike Tingle who father extends his arguments with statements made by other
schlors, Freire explains the importance of reading and how the moments in each stage of his
life shaped how he read and interpreted the world. Freire argues that the world that an individual
is raised in affects the words that they read therefore affecting their concept of the world. Freire
flashes back to his childhood where he gives a indepth description of his childhood surroundings.
He uses figurative language such as the tres were like persons to me (6). He gives such descriptive
details of his first world that if a reader was to close their eyes, they can imagine the old house, the

Besides his environmental surroundings, watching people increased his perceptual view of the
world. Compared to Tingle who discusses the struggle of perceptual activity from a working
class standpoint, it is clear that Freire s perceptual activity is more in a middle class mindset. His
childhood and education was more of a success where Freire attended Eunice Varsconcello s
private school. Freire s perceptual activity was encouraged by his family who helped expand his
world. Unlike Tingle who was not encouraged to talk or challenge authority throughout his working
class upbringing, Freire states that Exercising my boy s curiosity did not distort it, nor did
understanding cause me to scorn the enchanting mystery of the world. In this I was aided rather
than discouraged by my parents (7). Indeed both Tingle and Freire bring forward their personal
experiences in explaining the importance of perceptual activity from upbringing, They both explain
the concept of perceptual activity in two different stand points;the working class and the middle

The Theme Of Cruelty Towards Children By William Blake
In the poem Holy Thursday songs of experience and in the poem The Chimney Sweeper ,
William Blake makes use of various literary techniques to portray the theme of cruelty towards
children. The poem Holy Thursday refers to the wretched condition of children in charity
schools. The poem The Chimney Sweeper refers to the poor children who were used as slaves in
England. My aim for this essay is to explore how William Blakemade use of various literary
techniques to portray the theme of cruelty towards children in the two poems.
The title Holy Thursday alludes to joy and purity. Yet this poem highlights the cruelty towards
children in charity schools. Blake makes use of this contrast to emphasize on the subject of the
poem. Moreover ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The adjective holy which connotes purity and spiritual innocence is used to contrast with the
hypocrite nature of the benefactors of the charity school. This adjective moreover emphasize on
the wrenched conditions in which the children are being exposed to. Blake furthermore describe
the school s benefactors as cold and usurious ; two adjectives which depict their nature and
character. The word cold is a visual and kinesthetic imagery which portray the lack of love and
interest that the children are victim of. The adjective cold also alludes to the cold hearted
philanthropists on the British society.
The adjective trembling showcases the ill treatment of children in charity schools. Moreover the
visual and kinesthetic imagery of trembling emphasize on the poor conditions that the children are
exposed to. Trembling furthermore, is an adjective that portrays the fear and despair of these poor

Epicurus Vs Aristotle
What s the one thing everyone wants to achieve in life and is the ultimate end for every action
people do? Philosophers from almost every generation are trying to figure out what that is, some
even referring to it as the good . But what is the good ? Epicurus would argue that the good is
simply pleasure, honor, and glory; however, that is not the ultimate end for every action people do.
According to Aristotle, the ultimate end that every action seeks is happinessand that s the good
everyone desires. The idea of happiness being the ultimate end, is superior to Epicurus s idea of
pleasure, honor, and glory, due to the fact that all those things are intended to bring forth some form
of happiness. Therefore, happiness must be what everyone... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Through its self sufficiency, its relationship to virtue, and how having an active soul plays a parts
in becoming happy. All these ideas when combined create a complete understanding of happiness
and express the important role happiness has in making a life worth living. Not only that, but the
journey toward happiness through the virtues and an active soul help to develop peoples
character making them a better person overall. Happiness after all is the good that philosophers
have been trying to discover and it becomes more evident after studying happiness in more depth.
As has been noted, happiness is the end for every action people do, whether it be though pleasure
or virtue, in the end the main thing all people desire is

Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is an emerging computing technology that uses the internet and central remote
servers to maintain data and applications. Cloud computing allows consumers and businesses to use
applications without installation and access their personal files at any computer with internet
access. This technology allows for much more efficient computing by centralizing storage, memory,
processing and bandwidth. Cloud computing is broken down into three segments: applications,
platforms, and infrastructure. Each segment serves a different purpose and offers different products
for businesses and individuals around the world. In June 2009, a study conducted by VersionOne
found that 41% of senior IT professionals actually don t know what... Show more content on

The Five Principles Of Dance In The Russo-American Era
Dance is found in all cultures, it was considered a way to communicate without talking. During the
Renaissance period, ballet was considered a Russian specialty. The highly qualified and sought after
dance companies would tour the world performing in front of those who had never experienced
ballet before. By exposing ballet to the United States of America, the Russians inspired and sparked
a demand for legitimate ballet in America. It took place throughout the 20th century, currently
known as the Russo American Era. During the Russo American Era, the Russian choreographers,
such as, Michel Fokine, Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky, LГ©onide Massine, and Bronislava
Nijinska; they benefited from its American audience and started to make dramatic changes to the
classical ballet. Every single one of these choreographers implemented and transformed the way
people view, danced and perceived ballet in the early 20th century. Several ideas for these
innovations were from Michel Fokine, when in 1914 wrote a letter to the London Times, stating the
five principles of ballet that befitted the 20th century ballet:
1.Each dance should use new forms of movement suitable to its subject and period.
2.Dance and mime should be used to express dramatic action.
3.Mime should be used only when the ballet s style dictates it, in other cases the dancer s whole
body, not only the hands, should be used to communicate.
4.The corps de ballet should be used for plot development and as a means of

  • 2. Effect Of Sucrose Concentration On Potato Osmosis Research question: What is the Osmolarity (solute concentration) of potato tubers deduce by measuring the loss or gain in mass of samples immersed in sucrose solutions of different concentrations for 24 hours? The concentrations of sucrose solution are 0.0mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3), 0.2mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3), 0.4mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3), 0.6mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3), 0.8mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3), and 1.0 mol гЂ–dmгЂ—^( 3). Hypothesis: When plant tissues are immersed in sucrose solutions of different concentration, the cells will gain or lose water by osmosis and therefore change in size and mass. If the potato samples are immersed with hypertonic solution, the mass of samples will be reduced as the hypertonic solution has a higher solute concentration which makes the water move towards it. If the potato ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Osmosis is the passive trend of a fluid, usually water, to pass through partially permeable membrane into a higher concentration of sucrose to equalize the concentrations of solution on either side of the membrane. Factors affecting the rate of osmosis include temperature, surface area, and size of particles and concentration of the sucrose. Potatoes are generally grown from other potatoes by planting another piece of potato. This planted potato has several slightly recessed, dormant buds on the surface which will sprout at the right condition and the sprouts can develop into independent plant. The planted potato provides the new sprout or seedling with nutrition from its supply of stored starch. After a seed is planted, the main stem and first leaves appear above ground. The root system progresses quickly and begins to absorb nutrients. The top, where it has most leaves of the plant puts on a lot of growth. Then the growing of main stem of the plant ends producing a flower bud. When this happens, the plant will have many leaves causing them to eventually produce more nutrients than the plant needs, making excess energy to channel downward to be stored in the tubers which are thick, short, underground stems. • 3. U.s. Maritime Transportation Security Act Massport has enacted several policies and procedures to tighten security and better secure their various waterfront terminals. These policies include, but may not be limited to: 1. Transportation Worker Identification Credential: Massport has mandated the use of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and Massport Maritime Credentials for all workers entering Conley Terminal and Black Falcon Cruise Terminal. Required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act, TWIC is a threat assessment tool used to vet workers who require unescorted access to secure maritime facilities, vessels and other critical assets (e.g. cyber systems). Types of workers include, but may not be limited to, U.S. Coast Guard documented mariners, port and terminal operators, truckers, equipment maintenance personnel and port security personnel. Following a successful background check, workers are issued an identification which contains key employee information including name, a photo and biometric data. Personnel requesting a Massport Maritime Credential must present a TWIC card at the time of their request. Massachusetts currently supports five TWIC enrollment locations. They are located in Pocasset, Brockton, Boston, Worcester and Springfield. 2. A typical Stirling cycle consists of four phases compressing cool gas, heating the gas, expanding the hot gas, and finally cooling the gas before repeating the cycle. The engines can run on heat from solar, geothermal, biological, nuclear sources or waste heat from industrial processes, can be built to run quietly and don t produce any emissions. In contrast to other solutions used in solar thermal technology, Stirling engines don t have an inherent mechanism for storing heat. Stirling engine based combined heat and power plant (CHP) fuelled with biomass represents a technological breakthrough within onsite renewable energy generation. A system working on biofuel is a step towards utilisation of clean energy source. In biomass type wood chips and waste wood pallets are used which is environment friendly. Ideal Stirling Cycle The Stirling cycle is a thermodynamic cycle that describes the general class of Stirling devices. This includes the original Stirling engine that was invented, developed and patented in 1816 by Reverend Dr. Robert Stirling with help from his brother, an engineer [1]. The ideal Stirling Cycle consists of 4 individual processes with end points as marked in the Fig. 1[2]. Here the isothermal compression stroke (process 1в†’2) takes place by removing heat, Q12, from the working fluid in order to keep the temperature at a constant low value, TC. Figure 1: p V ... • 5. Solar Renewable Energy System In brewing industry, 80% of overall final energy consumption is used in the form of thermal energy where solar thermal can be used for brewing processes as below: steam generation, malting process, stopping germination of grains, air cooling, conservation with hot air, power supplying of washing machines, wither and kiln processes. Malting plants and breweries consume heatfor their thermally driven processes at temperature level ranges between 25В°C to 120В°C. It seems feasible to supply heat at this temperature level which is not higher than the actual amount required but in reality the it is often decided by the consumer which needs the highest temperature. The integration of solar renewable energysystem is necessary to reduce the exergy losses and CO2 emissions [17,21,24,25]. To utilize the organic matter from brewing residues, optimized heat recovery can supply its thermal energy demand over resources. Theoretically, the full energy potential is not utilized so the pathway is the conventional means of energy. However, the conversion of heat from energy gained from renewable energy resources can ensure environment friendly beer production process for future. To increase the overall energy efficiency, the integration of solar heat energy gained from solar thermal collector technologies can be considered as a prospective alternative to fulfill the demands of typical low temperature process heat. 9.3.Food Industry: The most ... • 6. American Mariners History The early modern sea particularly the Atlantic can be characterized as a space of great instability. It was here that communication and trade between nations became easily accessible, but the lack of uniform maritime regulations and commercial competition fostered hostility between states, resulting in prolonged periods of war. One distinct product of this environment was pirates, who took to the high seas in search of ships to illegally capture and raid of their goods. For the great maritime nations of the 16th to 18th centuries, pirates were simply criminals that threatened the progress of the world economy, but history has shown that they were much more complex figures. The reasons for becoming or turning pirate have been widely theorized, and it seems as though a multitude of social, political, and economic factors were at play. On an individual level, the dangerous and almost inevitably fatal nature of piracy makes it improbable that one would join a crew if they felt as though they had other alternatives. Instead, it is more likely that piracy was a last resort refuge for a dejected class of sailors who did not fit in with normative cultural standards, but could not escape the fact that society dictated that they must work to survive regardless. Because piracy stemmed from a distinctly maritime class and not the general landed population, it is easier to understand why it may have been seen as a viable option. These men were already familiar with the principles of teamwork, harmony, and trust that were 2 necessary to survive on a ship, and their lengthy voyages often made them ill adjusted to life on land. There are two main reasons why a sailor would have crossed the line between legal and illegal maritime service: perceived injustice and peacetime layoffs. • 23. A Midsummer s Night Dream Essay Everyone at one point or another judges someone else and makes the wrong assumption. People have that habit, but sometimes people can fool others. After all, people dress and act how they want to look to others. In the Elizabethan era romantic comedy A Midsummer s Night Dream, William Shakespeare suggests the theme that people have hidden layers and disguises which can lead others to foolish choices. People can fool other people, occasionally with the intent of mischief or a common mistake. When Puck, a usually mischievous fairy, wants to fulfill his lord Oberon s wishes without deviation, the action reveals another side of the fairy. However with all the good intent, Puck still mistakes Lysander for Demetrius. As Oberon speaks the mistake... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bottom has the characteristics necessary of an actor which includes the ability to alter the audience s perception. This is Ercle s vein, a tyrant s vein, a lover is more condoling (I. ii. 23 26. 38 40). However Bottom shows another side to himself to only the few in which he chooses. If anyone in the United States were asked, What is the best part about living in this country?, most people would answer equality . The United States is built on and known for the equality among its citizens and is often referred to as the melting pot . After reading Jonathan Kozols, The Shame of the Nation, equality is nonexistent within the schools he has gone to, and has been employed through. With his travels, expert testimony and personal stories gathered from the people within the community and schools, he shows the exact opposite of equality. Minority schools being his main focus, he discusses the inequalities these students endure and truly opens up your eyes to just how awful these minority schools have it. Jonathan Kozol is successful in his writing of The Shame of the Nation, and makes himself a voice for these minority schools that are denied of their voices. While some believe in a strong government that controls and expands its role over many aspects of American society, others believe that limiting governmentpower is necessary to having a thriving society and economy. Clark Kerr wrote the document Industrialism and the Industrial Man which highlights and explains the perspective of having a centralized government in power. Contrastingly, Capitalism and Freedom, written by Milton Friedman is in support of a limited government and placing a check on concentrated power. Both documents reflect the two different styles of government and provide context to their functions and the application of their duties. In Industrialism and the Industrial Man, Clark Kerr depicts the concept of an industrial society characterized by a government that has a wide range of activities and functions it controls. In this industrial society, the government provides and controls technology, infrastructure, urban development, military, international relations, education, parks, healthcare, and many other services to society. The government also keeps order of the economy, controlling the labor and product markets. The Paradox Of Change In Ray Bradbury s Dandelion Wine The Paradox of Change Change is a force which is ever present in the universe, and an individual is never free from its effects; change will continuously mold the individual by challenging its perception of its surroundings and itself. In many ways, change causes development and maturity, yet it also causes decline and decay. Change is constant. However, the paradox of change is often difficult to accept, and people will fight with its reality throughout their lifetimes: friends will come and go, epiphanies and advances will arrive, and things will never quite be like they used to be. The struggle between change and the individual is a recurring part of Ray Bradbury s Dandelion Wine. This relationship shows not only through the main character, Doug Spaulding, but also through those around him. Doug and the rest of Green Town show how people contend with changes in that which they know, those whom they know, and even themselves. Many of Doug s favorite parts of Green Town become altered in some way during the summer of 1928. No more trolley. Bus starts to run tomorrow.
