Essay About Racism And Discrimination
Composing an essay on the pervasive and complex issues surrounding racism and discrimination
is undoubtedly a challenging task. The subject matter demands a delicate balance of sensitivity,
thorough research, and a nuanced understanding of historical and contemporary contexts.
To begin with, one must navigate the intricacies of defining racism and discrimination,
acknowledging that these terms encompass a broad spectrum of experiences and manifestations.
Tackling such a weighty topic requires careful consideration of various perspectives, as the issues
at hand are deeply rooted in historical injustices, cultural biases, and systemic structures.
Researching the historical context is crucial, delving into the roots of racism and discrimination,
examining how these phenomena have evolved over time, and understanding their impact on
different communities. This involves grappling with uncomfortable truths, confronting the darker
chapters of human history, and acknowledging the ongoing struggles faced by marginalized
groups.
Furthermore, addressing contemporary instances of racism and discrimination requires a keen
awareness of current events, social dynamics, and the subtleties of systemic inequality. This
involves staying abreast of the latest developments and engaging with diverse sources to ensure
a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of these issues.
The writing process itself is an exercise in careful articulation. Crafting an essay on racism and
discrimination demands clarity of expression, empathy, and an ability to convey complex ideas in
a manner that is both accessible and impactful. Striking the right tone is essential, as the goal is
not only to inform but also to foster a thoughtful and empathetic response from the reader.
In conclusion, writing an essay on racism and discrimination is no easy feat. It requires a deep
dive into history, a nuanced understanding of contemporary issues, and the ability to convey
complex ideas with clarity and empathy. Nevertheless, tackling such a crucial and pressing topic
is essential for fostering awareness and driving positive change.

The Morality Of Torture On The Middle East Today And
The...
Morality of Torture. With the issues going on in the Middle East today and the war
on terrorism, the use of torture including murder, is a very widespread and
controversial issue. Torture is viewed as morally wrong; therefore it is also legally
wrong as well, not just on the home front but internationally as well (Is Torture
Ever Justified). However, torture is sometimes not only right, but is needed for a
greater good. With the case of torture you may not be able to see whether it is
clearly wrong or right. This essay will address three situations where torture may be
viewed as correct on a moral standpoint. It is clearly and completely wrong if torture
is used on an innocent victim without a true greater good trying to be achieved.
Saving innocent lives, taking down terrorists, and punishing them in institutions are
cases where torture is should be sound. Even more so, torture in those cases should
be welcomed as methods of punishment and further advancement in situations where
intelligence needs to extracted for the saving of lives or the take down of terrorist
activities. In no way should the use of torture be legalized for the use of the public,
but in uses for the armed forces and law enforcement there should be rules and
regulations that protect them if the use of torture is absolutely necessary. Millers
definition of torture is the intentional infliction of extreme physical suffering on some
non consenting, defenseless, other person for the purpose of breaking
Water In Ancient Egyptian Civilization
Ruth Demese Ancient Egypt is often revered as one of the most influential empires
in the world. Ancient Egyptian civilization is one of the longest running societies in
recorded history, and counterintuitively, this society came to fruition in one of the
largest arid desert areas in the world (Kemp 2006: 8). . The initial success of a
society is often determined by the resources made available to them, such as food and
water, which emphasizes the importance for the NileRiver, which ran through one of
the driest desert regions. In fact, this climate is so inhospitable that it would have
likely been impossible if not for the Nile River. Due to the vitality of the water on
Egyptian civilization throughout time, climate, hydrological flux, and... Show more

The River Nile carries water from Lake Victoria, the largest lake in the world, 3,000
miles downstream to the Mediterranean Sea (Kemp 2002: 8 12). Records suggest
that there had a long term decline in rainfall in Egypt beginning from the
Predynastic to Old Kingdom time, which is reflected in the types of plants and
animals that were recorded during the period (Stanley et al. 2003: 396 398). Lakes
and other water sources in Egypt also exhibited this drying trend. Therefore, The
Nile River allowed a source of water despite the lack of rainfall in the area, and the
land adjacent to the river was fertile as the river provided natural irrigation. Annual
flooding likely sufficient to support the population of Predynastic Egypt without
artificial irrigation. The Nile allowed for agriculture to thrive and facilitated the

Eating Meat: Biological Necessity, or Choice? The first article I chose to use for my
research paper, is from the scientific journal American Scientist, called Meat Eating
Among the Earliest Humans, written by Briana Pobiner who is a paleoanthropologist
at the Smithsonian s National Museum of Natural History. In this article, Pobiner
discusses the biological evolution of humans, how human meat consumption evolved
over time to facilitate the growth of human brain size to become the intelligent and
sentient beings we are today, and whether or not we still need to eat meat as our
ancestors did. Pobiner references many other scientists observations and discoveries.
For example, she uses the observations of a Mister Sherwood Washburn from the
University of California at Berkeley to expound upon how early findings of human
meat consumptions may have been wrong. According to Washburn, most current
carnivores leave the skull and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author of this work also is very knowledgeable on this topic because it is his
area of expertise through much research and studying. While Yount is using
questions from undergraduate students, they are easily understood questions. This
article adds value to my research paper because it brings the humanity of eating
meat into the equation. So as my research essay moves from the human biological
need, or lack thereof, to consume meat, this article will help me bridge the gap
because of the wide variety of opinions and facts that are presented within it. It will
help my research paper immensely that Yount took the time to ask questions often
posed to vegetarians, omnivores, and so on, so as to not seemed biased in one way or
another. This creates a great balance which will really help my
Disadvantages Of A Divergent Problem
Divergent Problem Statement
A divergent problem has been proposed by the South African Provincial
Administration (SAPA) to my firm. After an extensive screening of different
transport options, SAPA has decided to build a railway, 80 km long between its
two major cities with objectives of relieving the traffic on roadways linking the two
cities and stimulating economic development. A choice between the two types of
gauges is to be made. One is the existing Cape gauge 1,067 mm, the other, a
Standard Gauge of 1,435 mm. In order to solve the problem, pros and cons of each
type looking mainly at cost, safety, and performance which measures the
comfortability and maintenance of the track will be addressed starting with Cape
gauges and later, Standard gauges.
Cape Gauge
Pros ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having a uniform gauge gives convenience not only to engineers responsible for
construction but also to passengers as there may be no break of gauge needed, where
Ilie (2012) demonstrated that a break of gauge is seen as an obstacle to the smooth
flow of traffic which would consequently add delays, cost, and inconvenience.
Assuming the 80 km distance to have mountainous regions, the Cape gauge could be
the optimal choice in this situation. History research shows that narrow gauges were
used in mountainous regions. These gauges are also a substitute to places where
standard gauge trains would need tunnels or bridges (http://www.gaugemaster.com

ones are already producing Cape gauge
Comparing Characters In Macbeth And The Social Network
Comparing Characters in Macbeth and The Social Network
Similarities and differences are present between nearly anything. For instance, two
books can be compared in regards to their themes. Likewise, multiple people can be
contrasted in regards to their personality. Similarities and differences can be good
and bad and they can also help one to clearly see which of the subjects that are being
compared are better than the other. Another example of where two subjects can be
compared is in Macbeth and The Social Network, in regards to the characters. One
may wonder how such different pieces of work could possibly be compared and
contrasted, but after analyzing both pieces, it is clear that such similarities and
differences exist. Characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows how their idea, if successful, would make them rich and potential
billionaires, given their past work and their intelligence. Through both of these
examples, it is clear that both the twins and Malcolm are very close to being on
top. However, it is evident that the situation in Macbeth is worse than in The Social
Network, because for Malcolm and Donalbain, this power has put them at risk.
Since Duncan has been murdered, they must flee to keep themselves safe. Unlike for
the twins, the only thing that they had at stake was their idea for HarvardConnection
being stolen. In this situation, Shakespeare makes the reader more sympathetic for
Donalbain and Malcolm than Sorkin does for the Winklevoss twins. This shows
how although both characters are similar, their situations are very different and the
characters in Macbeth have it worse. Secondly, Lady Macbeth and Sean Parker are
two characters that are similar in the sense that they are the real people in control
behind the scenes. Although everyone may think that Macbeth is strong and a good
leader, Lady Macbeth controls him and convinces him to commit terrible crimes. One
of Lady Macbeth s way of controlling Macbeth is to question his manhood. Lady
Macbeth expressed her thoughts of Macbeth as:

Common Misconceptions Of The Health Community
Common misconceptions in the health community revolve around what the body
needs versus what media says the body needs. Are dietary supplements efficient? Are
they even necessary? To answer these questions, one must investigate the three most
popular supplements herbal, pill, and gel capsules in order to determine which type
best suits the body s needs.
Although they are one of the most ancient practices of medicine, certain herbal
supplements have no impact on the body while others do. Herbs are a type of plant,
but the stem of an herb is not as hardy, [and does not have a] woody structure which
makes herbs easy to consume ( Herbs ). Because herbs do not have a woody
structure they have the capacity to be consumed in various ways. In the past herbs
were consumed as tea, although this practice is still in effect; people prefer
consuming herbs via extractions. One of the most popular methods of extraction is
the whole herb method which asserts that all of a plant s compounds contribute to
its ability to heal and protect health [;] this method ensures that one receives the
purest form of the natural herb (Ogden). Purity is a standard that many companies
swear by, and herbal companies are no different. Herb Pham, for example, is a
very popular liquid herbal supplement; liquid forms of any type of remedy are
known to be absorbed by the body quickest, but the companies research shows that
many of the types of herbs they sell have little to no effect on the body. One of the
The Vs. Real Madrid Essay
The issue that is being investigated are between two Spanish football (soccer) teams
which team is ultimately better? Both giants in their own right, Barcelona and Real
Madrid have traded success and feuded for a very long time. Both sets of fans have
fought over which team is better comparing players, stats, style of play, managers,
stadiums, etc.
B)What is your thesis? (this will be different than the Classical model thesis)
Through the giant rivalry where both teams boast world class talent, tactical
managers and large finances behind them, Real Madrid and Barcelona have
established themselves as two of football s biggest clubs.
C)What common ground do you share? (A value both sides agree on)
Both sides come from Spain, a place where football is highly competitive. This
local rivalry is important because there is a ton of psychology that effects players
on the pitch. Every player WANTS to win, there is nothing being held back when
the players go onto the field. Historically, both teams are extremely successful.
Real Madrid and Barcelona have over 20 league titles each, 32 and 22 respectively.
As for the Spanish Cup, Copa del Rey, they are also very triumphant, Real Madrid s
19 wins to Barcelona s 26. This massive success in these local competitions cemented
both teams as the most victorious teams in all of Spain. Europe s biggest competition,
UEFA Champions League, where all the fantastic teams all across Europe compete

Turner Syndrome, A Rare Medical Disorder
Gonadal Dysgenesis Gonadal Dysgenesis, also known as turner syndrome, is a rare
medical disorder that affects 1 in every 2,500 girls (kidshealth). It is a chromosomal
that occurs when one of the two X chromosomes found in females are missing or is
incomplete. This condition only affects females. Although researches don t know
exactly what cause turner syndrome, they do know that it s a problem with a female
chromosome. Females who are born with Tuner Syndrome are short in height and
effects their sexual development and the ability to have children. Other features of
this condition that can vary among women who have turner syndrome include:
extra skin on the neck, heart defects, puffiness or swelling on the hands and feet,
and/or kidney failure. Turner Syndrome was discovered by Henry H. Turner, MD,
a pioneer endocrinologist. He first discovered the syndrome in 1938 when he wrote
is manuscript describing the syndrome that has his name. Henry Turner described
his initial observations of the Turner syndrome in an interview with R. Palmer
Howard, MD and he said he noticed a pattern of non maturing girls who were shorter
than regular girls and had short necks, and a low hair line. Turner continued to follow
the seven patients, and he later discovers that they responded to an estrogen therapy,
in which helped the teenagers develop breasts, and increase the size of their uterus.
Some of the symptoms of females who are born with Turner syndrome are shorter
than average,
The Foundations Of Modern Conservatism
The foundations of modern conservatism have always been nebulous. It is less a
defined set of principles than a reactionary disdain for change and bleary eyed
nostalgia for some imaginary pastoral paradise one might find in a Nicolas Poussin
painting. Its spongy basis and hazy boundaries are conservatism s strength. It lets
conservatives co opt and abandon virtually any issue at will
When Ronald Reagan was in office, he enjoyed the title of The Great
Communicator. It was a title he earned, and conservatives embraced his oratorical
skills as a valuable asset. By the time Bill Clinton brought his own superior
communication skills to the office of the President, conservatives attacked him for
being too touchy feely. The good became the bad, with no reference to coherence.
If conservatism can be said to have guiding principles, Russell Kirk has probably
constructed the most plausible list of them. I won t rehash what he has already done,
but I will draw your attention specifically to the fifth and six entries on his list. His
fifth principle, which he dubs the principle of variety, holds that:
For the preservation of a healthy diversity in any civilization, there must survive
orders and classes, differences in material condition, and many sorts of inequality.
Mind you, Kirk isn t making a descriptive statement here about how thing actually
are, but rather making a prescriptive statement about how things should be. Even

King Lear Play vs. Movie Essay
King Lear
Summer Reading Report # 1
Alejandro Ramirez

Mrs. Colton
King Lear by William Shakespeare tells the tragedy of Lear, King of England, who
slowly, throughout the course of the play becomes mad and eventually dies. There
have been many film adaptations of the play all of which try and remain as close to
the original play; however, none appear to keep the same meaning of Shakespeare s
text more than director Richard Eyre s film version of King Lear (1997). Shakespeare
focuses in on each character s flaws and their contributions to the consequences at
the end of the play and although Eyre does the same in his film, he adds minor
actions and scenes to the play to give characters of the play a light ... Show more

This makes the audience view Lear as obviously superior to Kent and it also
demonstrates the total control and power Lear has over Kent by banishing his
servant. The remainders of Act I and Act II in Eyre s film focus on the conflict
between Lear and his two daughters, Goneril and Regan. Goneril and Regan begin
looking down on their father and take away more of his privileges every chance
that they get. They reduce Lear s hundred knights down to fifty. Goneril and Regan
s tone of voice when arguing with Lear about reducing his number of knights down
is vehement. Goneril complains about how the palace seems more like a tavern
because of Lear s knights demeanor, her voice quivers slightly, making it seem like
she doesn t want to have to argue with her father, in the play this change of tone is
absent. This suggests that although Goneril cares more about the way others see
her and material objects than the safety of her father. Both Shakespeare and Eyre
emphasize the consequences of Lear s choice to give up his power and give it to
his two eldest daughters, Regan and Goneril. In Act III, a violent storm had broken
out. Lear, not wanting to dismiss any of his knights, refused to stay with either of his
daughters and headed out into the storm. It is out in the storm, where Lear and Kent
meet Poor Tom (Edgar). Lear seeing Poor Tom, with no luxury admires him and tries
to imitate his style.
The Main Functions Of The Central Bank
Central bank is a government created institution which has a very powerful impact
by its behaviour on the economy of a country, this includes financial firms as it uses
economic tools like credit policies and restriction and supply of money. The central
bank of a country would have more impact on the day to day activities of financial
services providers, including revenue and cost than any other institution in an
economy. The primary function of the central bankis to make changes according to the
situation in the market, this would involve supply and cost of money and credit to
the financial system, which would directly or indirectly contribute to the nation s
growth and goal.
(CHAPTER 2 THE IMPACT OF GOVERNMENT POLICY AND REGULAITON
OPN THE FINANCIAL SERVICE INDUSTRY)
The main functions of the central bank are that it controls the issue of legal tender
and it has monopoly over it, thus in a way also has the control over the supply of
money in the economy. As the central bank is the banker s bank it has control over
both the banking and the non banking financial institutions. It is the government s
bank and performs traditional banking operations, lending and deposit taking for the
government it has enough capacity to manage and administer the country s national
test. The central bank acts as the mediator and regulation with regard to the foreign
exchange and gold reserve. The central bank plays a very important role in order to
maintain and stabilize the price level and

wearing a suit and bowler hat, as well as The Hound of Hades, Cerberus. Oedipus is

Oedipus Rex contains several references to incest and the consequences of it.
Oedipus accidental incestous acts with his mother caused him to blind himself and be
constrained to a world that he can no longer see and enjoy, as well as causing his
mother great shame, and even her life. The deformity of Oedipus companion,
Toulouse Lautrec, is another consequence of the incestous habits of characters like
Oedipus and Jocasta. Atroshenko seems to have been trying to warn people of the
dangers of incest and sexual promiscuity by highlighting the circumstances that it has
left many to deal with and endure. Atroshenko s painting adds new depth and
perspectives on Oedipus Tyrannus and highlights the crucial points of Sophocles

The Career Of A Singing Career
There are many careers someone can choose based on personal preference and
hobbies. One of the best jobs is a singing career. The reason for this choice of career
is that it can be very rewarding. We all have some big name star that pops into our
head when we hear the word singer . Maybe it is Beyonce or Justin Bieber,
depending on personal musictype. Singingis a way to express how you feel through
songs when words can t.
Careers come in a variety of forms and many have complex jobs. A singing career
is a pretty straight forward job, at first glance. There are many different jobs that
someone in this career path has to do on a day to day basis. First, writing music
and lyrics. Before a singer can start on a career they need a plan, so in singing it isn
t a good idea to just jump right in without some music. This can either be an
original music piece or a covers of another artist s songs. Second is having to
perform for crowds and other groups. If a singer wants to gain recognition and fame,
they need to perform for others. One of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The earnings make have to do with how much merchandise such as t shirts and cds
are sold at a concert. Another way to earn money in this career is tips. These can
be during starting years as well as when the singer gains popularity. Another thing
that plays a big part in how much money a singer will earn yearly is how many
shows they perform at or if they volunteer at different places that will allow them to
get some extra money. The singer won t be able to keep all the money they earn
because if they are apart of a contract, some of that money will go to the rest of the
group. Plus, if at anytime they choose to play an instrument like for instance, a guitar,
they are going to need to buy equipment to help them perform like microphones and
the stands, monitors, and compact disks
Introduction. Anterograde Amnesia Is The Inability To Form
Introduction
Anterograde amnesia is the inability to form new memories, while keeping old
memories intact. People who suffer from this impairment, are unable to encode new
memories into long term memory but are able to keep them in short term. The movie
Fifty First Dates portrays this type of amnesia accurately and inaccurately. The main
protagonists of Fifty First Dates are Lucy, played by Drew Barrymore, and Henry,
played by Adam Sandler. Lucy suffers from anterograde amnesiadue to brain damage.
For the most part, the movie is accurate to the impairment and is almost exactly the
same as the impairment patients suffer from.

Procedural memory is usually memories associated with muscle memory where her
body remembers it even if she does not. This is also true to the type of amnesia. She
even dreams about Adam Sandler s character even though she is not sure how she
knows him. Somehow, her encounters with him are encoded even though she doesn t
remember them explicitly.
A Real Life Example: FL and Similarities from the Movie
What is most interesting is that the movie seems to be based off of a real incident.
Smith et. al (2010) wrote about a special case of a patient named FL. She was in a
car accident in 2005 and reported difficulty retaining information from one day to
the next. She describes her memory as unaffected over the course of the day but
when she falls asleep, the memory for each day disappears. FL also, is able to
recall things from before her accident. Lucy, a fictional character created for a
movie, shares many things in common with FL, thus showing that the film is
accurate to the disorder. It also is interesting to know that FL like Lucy was
somehow able to remember something s. According to Smith et. al (2010), For some
tests, unbeknownst to FL, material learned on the previous day was intermixed with
material learned on the same day as the test. In other words, FL sometimes mixed in
previously learned material that she did not recall learning due to her impairment
with material that she learned that day. This idea of intermixing material was also
accurate
The Main Ideas of Liberal Political Theory
Examine the main ideas of Liberal political theory
It is perhaps safe to say that the most prominent political philosophy in contemporary
era is liberalism. Liberalism is based on the ideas of liberal political theorists of the
last three hundred years. Among these ideas, the first and most important deals with
the question of liberty. Political theorists such as John Locke and John Stuart Mill
argued that liberty of individual citizens must be upheld by the state. Mill
particularly stated that the state should be liberal by default. The burden of proving
that liberty should be restricted or prohibited should lie on the states. Unless they
can provide such proof, all citizens should by presumption be at liberty. Locke,
Rousseau, and Hobbes stated that liberty could be restricted under certain
circumstances. For instance, when the state is threatened by a revolt, and since the
state is the guarantor of liberty of all its subjects, the state is justified in curtailing
some liberal policies but temporarily. The government under liberal political theory
is viewed as a necessary evil. The theory suggests that the power and the role of the
state should be minimized. There should also be a balance of power in the state.
Democracy is essential for liberal political theory. Citizens should enjoy both liberty
and the freedom to elect or, in the absence of liberal political order, overthrow the
government. But the liberties of citizens cannot be guaranteed in a state of anarchy.

How does each part of your identity fall into the bioecological perspective, approach

says we cannot fully understand development without considering how a person is
influenced by each of these levels . (Feldman,2017, p.22) The different levels of the
human ecosystem are; microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, microsystem, and the
chronosystem. The easiest way to follow the pattern is imagine we are going up a
ladder as we develop one step at a time.
Microsystem
The first system we encounter when talking about the bioecological perspective is
the microsystem. This level is best described as day to day interactions between

Can Nine Minimum Criteria Be Used for a Democracy in
Yemen...
Schmitter and Karl (1991) listed Robert Dahl s seven minimum criteria for a
political democracy and developed two of their own (p. 247). Most of the nine
criteria, if not all, are irrelevant in my assigned countries, since both my assigned
countries are non democratic. Criteria one gives elected officials constitutional power
to make policy. Under this criteria, Yemen
and Saudi both differ. Saudi Arabiahas a
Shura council, which is an advisory body, but they do not enact and enforce laws,
only the King can. In Yemen, there are elected officials and a parliament; however,
the power they have is also limited. The second criteria guarantees fair elections with
no coercion. In both countries, one cannot safely say that elections are... Show more

Criteria seven is difficult to analyze, this criteria is the right of citizens to form and
be part of groups or assemblies, and to organize and be part of organizations. Both
countries claim that they have a pluralistic political system, and that many parties
are allowed to organize and be part of the political system. However, many reports
show that this might not necessarily be true. Saudi Arabia and Yemen are very
influenced by Islamic law; thus, liberal or secular political parties are naturally
suppressed. However, when it comes to the private business sector, Saudi Arabia
seems to be more flexible. The country has private schools, private hospitals, and
private pharmacies. For example, the Saudi German hospital in Jeddah, which is one
of the best private hospitals not just in the country by also in the region (International
Hospitals Construction Co. Ltd. [IHCC], n.d.). Moreover, Saudi Arabia has multiple
private schools, such as the American International School in the capital Riyadh (U.S.
Department of State, n.d.). These organizations are allowed to function with
considerable flexibility within the country. Yemen also has a developing private
sector. Recently a group of NGO s as well as government representatives organized a
meeting in Saudi to discuss the private sector as well the humanitarian situation in

It took us a little while to find my aunt in Golden, Colorado because the directions

The Impacts Of The Great Freekening And The Impact Of
The...
It is often said that The Great Awakening was a movement that impacted the religious
community forever. I would like to argue that people really did not change much after
the Awakening, and they slipped back into their old habits after the entertaining
revivals. I will be discussing what happened during the Great Awakening, and why it
happened. Also, the impacts it had, and the influential people like George Whitefield,
and Jonathan Edwards who encouraged this movement and helped it flourish. The
Great Awakening was rush of religious recovery clearing through New England that
expanded changes and church participation. Through the senses, people could now
understand God s truth. During the time of the Great awakening, the Congregational
Church split into groups called Old Lights and New Lights. The supporters of the
Awakening were called New Lights in New England and New Sides in the Middle
Colonies: these accentuated supremacy of emotions. New Lights : defense by
confidence, vagrant evangelizing, energy, recovery, and radicalism. Old lights
ultimately did the opposite; they would downplay emotion, and emphasize
rationalism. Some of the people who were influential during this time were people
like George Whitefield who had thousands that would venture out to see and hear him
preach. Gilbert Tennent was another influential man during this time. His most
popular sermon, On the Danger of an Unconverted Ministry, contrasted contemporary
hostile to revivalist pastors with
The Knowledge Of One s Self Essay
The ability to understand the knowledge of one s self is a helpful skill and can be
very useful in life and in new situations. When one becomes aware of their own
cognitive process, it helps them to fully understand how their brain interprets
information and how they can retain that information, leading to a clear advance in
their academic performance. Many strategies can be used to develop the skill of
metacognition, but the main ones include questioning one s thoughtprocess, using and
organizing one s notes in a way to effectively collect the information that was given,
and developing a level of critical thinking when analyzing material.
A student that is able to analyze key information from material will be able to gain
a better understanding of it and will be easier to remember. Questioning main
concepts that are present within the reading help to break down the significant
material into easier to remember information. Asking questions such as What is the
main idea the material is trying to portray? can help to initiate the thinking process
that the reader needs to use when analyzing a piece of reading (2016). This helps
the reader to get a main idea of the topic and analyze the material they are reading,
triggering an easier response when a student comes across the subject on a test. A
student that tries to interpret the way the writer thinks is able to grasp the style and
ideas that the writer is showing within a text. A similar question that can be asked is

A Comparison Between Star Trek And Star Wars
For years Americans have looked to the skies, dreaming of the intergalactic future,
and Hollywood has filmed the skies, latching onto America s love for fictional space
travel. Of the numerous cosmic entertainment franchises, Star Trek and Star Wars
undoubtedly claim the title of the two most successful, and with great power comes
great controversy. As long as the two franchises have existed, Star Trekand Star Wars
have sparked some of the most intense conflicts that could possibly occur between
nerds. With lightsabers in hand and phasers set to stun, Star Wars and Star Trek
ignite battles at the box office, with critics and among super fans to ultimately
decide which is the most popular. The senior of the two space franchises, Star Trek,
began back in 1966 with Star Trek: The Original Series, starring William Shatner as
Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock. Before the release of Star Wars, Star
Trek: The Original Series was canceled, and an animated series debuted and
canceled, which suggests that early Star Trek had low popularity. Then, in 1977,
Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope was released, boasting a record breaking box
office, the establishment of an instant fan club, and the title of the highest grossing
film in America. From a purely numerical standpoint, Star Trek and Star Wars each
prove to be more prolific than the other in certain categories. For instance, Star Trek
has debuted seven television series and thirteen films while Star Wars has released
The Issue Of Mineral Rights Essay
As a first time homebuyer in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I thought I had very
carefully prepared myself for all that the process would involve, including gathering
income and financial documentation, qualifying for a mortgage, arranging for a
thorough inspection, evaluating needs and desires from a home and finding a
reputable agent to represent my interests. One area I never considered, however,
was the issue of mineral rights. To be perfectly honest, although I d heard the term,
I d never given consideration to what it actually meant. But that all changed in the
middle of my home buying process and I d like to share with you the knowledge I
ve gained through extensive research I completed to protect my own rights and the
rights I would possess as a soon to be homeowner. According to propertylaw, two
different forms of rights exist in any real property: surface rights and mineral rights.
Surface rights refer to any structure erected above the surface or sub surface
structures that do not exceed a certain depth, as well as rights to use all surface
property surrounding structures in accordance with zoning ordinances. Mineral rights
refer to mineral substances below a certain depth and the way in which they are
preserved, explored or extracted. These mineral substances can include natural gas,
oil, or any other substance in common use today that can be mined or otherwise
extracted from below the surface. Local laws set the depth below which surface rights

Financial Aid in Education Essay
Financial Aid in Education
A guy in $50,000 of debt has got to be irresponsible with his money right? Actually, it
is more likely that he is a college student. Hundreds of thousands of college students
around the country are in a financial predicament because of the government?s
impersonal financial aid policies. The federal government?s current system has too
many quirks which end up hurting the people that financial aid is supposed to help.
The federal government should change its financial aid policies to take several more
factors, such as the percentage of educational expenses paid by the student, into
account.
Under the present system, all students applying for federal aid file a form called the
Free Application for Federal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The federal government does not use this application for aid. The CSS Profile is a
service provided by The College Board. It includes many more factors such as the age
of the parents, house payments, and car payments. Mostly expensive private
universities use the CSS Profile because their students have much more financial
need.
The current system does a fairly decent job of predicting the amount of aid needed
assuming both the parents and the student are paying for the student?s education. The
big problem with the system is that not all parents help pay for their child?s
education. According to the current system, the student would have to cover the
expected contribution from their parents as well as their own expected contribution
should their parents decide not to help foot the bill. For example, if a student from a
middle class family which is earning $70,000 a year. Assuming the student was
earning $3,000, and that student wanted to attend Duke University, approximately
$33,000 a year, the family would be expected to pay $13,641 of the bill for each
year2. If the parents choose not to help the student pay, then it would be the student?s
responsibility to pay every bit of the $13,641. How many students graduating high
school can afford that? I think that this factor could quite possibly be the biggest
reason that students think they cannot afford college.
Another problem is that the current system actually punishes students for saving their
Essay on The Disaster at Chernobyl
The Disaster at Chernobyl
On April 26th, 1986, operators at the Chernobyl Power Plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine,
ran what they thought to be a routine safety test. But fate was not on the side of these
operators. Without warning, reactor #4 became unstable, as it had been operating at
a low power for a possible shutdown and the reactor s design caused it to be unsafe at
this level of power. Internal temperatures rose. Attempts to cool the system produced
the opposite effect. Instantly, the nuclear coresurged with power. At 1:23 p.m., the
reactor exploded. The first blast ripped off the reactor s steel roof. The second blast
released a large plume of radiation into the sky. Flames engulfed the building. For ten
long days, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While some of the radiation lasted only for a few weeks, radioactive cesium 137
contaminated the ground, plants, animals, and people with particles that produce
destructive energy waves for 30 or more years. Over time, both kinds of radiation
can cause cancer and other diseases.[2] Patricia Doyle, president of the Chernobyl
Children s Project which aids victims of the Chernobyl accident said, The
Chernobyl accident resulted initially in an epidemic of thyroid cancer in the
surrounding region. While that has subsided, physicians have been seeing an
increase in tumors of all types caused by exposure to the radiation that remains in
the soil. [3] According to a statistic from the Belarus Ministry of Health quoted
during a field visit in January 1999, only 15% of the children between the ages of 5
and 15 are in good health. [4]
The regions commonly identified as experiencing the greatest contamination include
the oblasts (regions) of Homyel , Mahilyow, and Brest in southern and eastern
Belarus; Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and Chernihiv in northern Ukraine; and Bryansk in
southwestern Russia.[5] Many of the effects on public health are difficult to
determine. While many health concerns are the cause of overexposure to radiation
from the accident, poor nutrition, the generally low level of health, and stress and
anxiety produced by fear of radiation exposure may all also be factors.

The Short Stories of Gabriel Garcia Marquez Essay
The Short Stories of Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Short story writer. Novelist. Journalist. Political activist. Nobel Prize winner. Most
beloved of 20th century Latin American authors, Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born
on March 6, 1928, in the small coastal town of Aracataca, Colombia. He published
his first story, The Third Resignation, in 1947 and began studying law and
journalism. His first novel, Leafstorm, was published in 1955, the same year the
Colombian government shut down his employer, the newspaper El Espectador. In
1958, after 14 years of engagement, he married Mercedes Burcha and began
working for the Caracas newspaper, El Momento. During the Cuban Revolution in

However, they incorporate a variety of compelling themes, focusing primarily on
death and the fantastic, insomnia and unreality, the absurd and the irrational, and are
told often from skillfully interwoven, scrambled points of view. In these stories,
Garcia Marquez is attempting to capture the world as presented in Kafka s
Metamorphosis. He is striving to not only portray the world as it is, but to invent
another dreamlike reality, and in the process demonstrate that the reality and the
dream are one and the same. These bizarre and occasionally disturbing excursions into
surreal states of consciousness are poignantly Kafkaesque.
For example, the story The Third Resignation, contains a vivid reenactment of
Gregor Samsa s bug like condition. In this story, instead of waking up as a dung
beetle, the main character is trapped in a frightening existence of living death. He
has been living in a coffin for 18 years, since he turned seven, when his mother was
told by the doctor, Madam, your child has a grave illness: he is dead.
Nevertheless...we shall do everything possible to keep him alive beyond death (5).
Though he is dead, the main character continues to grow in size and also grows a
beard, indicating that he is medically not dead, but, like Gregor Samsa, is
completely paralyzed. He spends his entire life trying to figure out whether or not
he is alive: A few moments before he had been happy with his death because he had
thought he was dead. Because a dead man
Sikh Beliefs
Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Jesus Christ share teaching of hope and inspiration to their
followers. Sikh believe in God and that he is the creator of the universe and you
must live a clean righteous life in order to attain eternal life. Another similarity is
Guru Nanak Dev Ji left with God for three days. While spending that time with God
he learned his laws and what it takes to have eternal life. After having spiritual

Upon further research of the Sikh religion I learned many things it have different in

Sikh is a religion that stated in India and have grown to other nations and even landed

I like the Sikh concept of believing in God. I also like the fact of God believing in
one creator of heaven and earth. Living right to serve him and to due justice for
humanity. The only issue in this religion is the notion not believing in Christ Jesus.
Growing up Pentecostal I have strong belief in my Lord Jesus Christ. I feel that he

The Maltreatment Of Children During The 21st Century
The maltreatment of children in the 21st century is a very major issue. Due to
maltreatment, children are running away from home, being trafficked into the
sex business, and sometimes, lose their life due to a lack of parental supervision
and/or loved ones who care about their well being. Through volunteering at a
missing children s program with Sam s Club, I ve learned first hand just how
detrimental maltreatment in our society can be and how we must do everything in
our power to prevent children from being exposed to maltreatment, provide them
with safe and loving environments, and finally, do all we can to rescue and
children that are taken or trafficked and place them in safe environments. In this
paper, there will be an exploration of maltreatment of children, including statistics
of children who go missing and types of maltreatment, specifically sex trafficking,
measures used to find missing children, and finally, what happens to children who
go missing, their professions, lifestyles, and quality of life. Child maltreatment is
essentially a synonym for child abuse, which is the abuse or neglect or any act or
series of acts, regardless of commission or omission by a caregiver, which can
result in the harm or threat of a child s life. Child maltreatment is one of the leading
reasons why children go missing. These instances of maltreatment are very much the
reason why in 2015, there were 13,700 kids to go missing and over 4.4 million cases
of children being exploited,
Reflection Paper On Teaching English
Reflective Narrative English has never been my preferred subject. Actually, it has
been my least preferred subject. Every day in school, I often speculated why it is
essential to do so many English affiliated tasks, and in speculating, I discovered to
hate the subject without apprehending its future benefits. Why do I find English so
distasteful? I think my despise for the subject has elevated through these last few
years that I have been learning the distinct elements of English language. It wasn t
actually learning how to convey a message through speaking English that unnerved
me, rather it was getting English education in a formal learning environment like
reading, writing, and grammar. These were the stuff that once I learned them, I
will be using them every day. It does felt good to know how to read and write and
even better to have a little bit knowledge of grammar. Not only did I maneuver the
knowledge to read a narrative in reading class or to perform a writing assignment,
but also to read the newspaper and write an epistle to friend or family. I have learned
numerous things throughout the entire course of the semester, including, how to find
and composite better research through the use of many resources found at the
campus library and the internet, and how to cite my research work correctly using
MLA format. The last thing I learned from the class is revising my paper until I feel
everything is on track and sounds good. As an international student, I struggled
Female Idealizations And Norms Within The Films Like
Water...
The complex web of cultural determinations and predefined ideological system are
predominant in the lives of the female characters named Tita, Gertrudis, and Frida
Kahlo in the movies Like Water for Chocolate and Frida. Furthermore, throughout
history, the development of female idealizations and norms, which powerfully
influences the behavior of women throughout society, has derived from a masculine
structure that is imposed onto the female gender. Although this is still prevalent in
modern culture, throughout the years surrounding the Mexican Revolution, women
were perceived as subordinate to men due to particular cultural determinants and
predefined beliefs that existed within the structure of society. Specifically, this
structure played a leading role in the lives of women, which regarded them as inferior
to men while characteristically portraying women in traditional domestic roles,
thereby influencing the social norm of femininitythroughout civilization.
Predominantly, throughout the films, the existence of the complex web of cultural
determinations and the predefined ideological system within social and family
traditions largely impacts the dominant character and behavior of Tita, Gertrudis, and
Frida. As such, in order to break free from the complex web of cultural
determinations, and challenge the predefined ideological systems in their lives, the
female characters of Tita, Gertrudis, and Frida behave in rebellious ways that reject
the given traditions amongst their
Essay On Latch
Implement of low power efficient 16 bit sift register, need a low power D latch and
delayed clock pulse generator for controlling the propagation of data through the
latches.
3.1 INTRODUCTION TO LATCH Latches are the basic elements for storing
information. One latch can store one bit of information. In latches, their outputs are
constantly affected by their inputs as long as the enable signal is asserted. In other
words, when they are enabled, their content changes immediately when their inputs
change. There are basically four main types of latches: SR, SR with enable, D and D
with enable. For each type, there are also different variations that enhance their
operations. In this section, we will look at the ... Show more content on

At time t2 we reset the latch by making R = 0. Now, Q goes to 1 and this will
constrain Q to go to a 0. On the off chance, we de assert R with the goal that again
we have S = R = 1, this time the latch will remain in the reset state as shown at time
t3. Notice the two times (at t1 and t3) when both S and R are de asserted. At t1, Q
is at a 1, though, at t3, Q is at a 0.
At the point when both the two inputs are de asserted, the SR latch keeps up its
past state. Past to t1, Q has the value 1, so at t1, Q stays at a 1. Additionally,
previous to t3, Q has the value 0, so at t3, Q stays at a 0. In the event that both S
and R are asserted, then both Q and Q are equivalent to 1 as shown at time t4. On
the off chance that one of the input signals is de asserted sooner than the other, the
latch will end up in the state constrained by the signal that was de asserted later as
shown at time t5. At t5, R is de asserted first, so the latch goes into the ordinary set
state with Q = 1 and Q = 0. An issue exists if both S and R are de asserted at the very
same time as shown at time t6. In the event that the both two gates have very same
delay then they will both output a 0 at very same time. Feeding the zeros back to the
gate input will create a 1, again at the very same time, which again will deliver a 0,
Jehovah s Belief Of Jesus And The Archangel Michael
3.Jehovah s Witnesses believe that Jesus and the archangel Michael are the same
person.
JW believe that Jesus had three periods of existence:
1.In his pre human existence he was called God s only begotten Son because
Jehovah created him directly. As the first born of all creation, Jesus was used by God
to create all other things. Jesus also had the personal name of Michael the archangel at
this time.
2.The second stage of Jesus life was here on earth. He willingly submitted as God
transferred his life from heaven to the womb of a Jewish virgin named Mary.
3.He became the Messiah at his baptism, was executed on a torture stake, and rose
again spiritually, but not physically.
Christian Response: There is absolutely no biblical basis for identifying Jesus with
Michael the archangel. Also, the bible teaches that Jesus was the Messiah at birth,
and coequal with the Father from all eternity:
Philippians 2:5 7 ~ Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a
thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bondservant, and being
made in the likeness of men.
1 Colossians 1:15 ~ He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all
creation. The Greek word used here for first born is Prototokos, which means First in
Rank, Supreme.
Hebrews 1:4 ~ become so much better than the angels.
So we see that Jesus did not regard His equality with God as something to be
grasped. This word means to be utilized or asserted. Instead of asserting His
equality with the Father, Jesus emptied Himself which means he laid aside His
privileges as God and took on the form of a man.
4.Jehovah s Witnesses believe the Holy Spirit is a force and not a real Person.
JW does not believe in the Trinity, much less the Holy Spirit as part of the God
head. The personality and deity of the Holy Spirit is denied.
John 14:16 17 ~ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to
be with you forever the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it
neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will
be in you.
The Holy Spirit dwells inside of us, not just an
Glaucoma Essay
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a common and important health problem. It is one of the leading
causes of blindness in Western Society (Hoskins Kass, 1989). It is responsible for
ten percent of all blindness in the United States and continues to be the second or
third most common cause of blindness in the world (Bunce, Fraser, Wormald, 1999).
It is estimated that two million people in the United States have been diagnosed as
having glaucoma. Glaucoma is known to affect about two percent of Caucasians
beginning at the age of 40 with an increasing risk for those over the age of 60. This
risk is especially high if a member of the family has glaucoma or diabetes. Further,

Pain can be another result of the disease and is affiliated with the height of the
intraocular pressure and the velocity with which it rises to that level (Hoskins
Kass, 1989). Altered vision is also a possible result of this disease and occurs in
many forms. Episodic blurring of vision is frequently arises when rapid increase
of intraocular pressure causes corneal edema. Loss of Snellen visual acuity
generally appears late in the sequence of glaucoma unless some other problems
transpire, such as central retinal vein occlusion. Other symptoms may include things
such as a change in the appearance of the eye, halo vision, and redness. Before
other symptoms occur, an increased level of intraocular pressure is usually
observed. These symptoms and an increase in intraocular pressure are likely to occur
in both open angle glaucoma and angle closure glaucoma, which are two of the major
types of glaucoma.
Visual field defects, defects pertaining to everything a person sees from peripheral
vision to central vision, and optic disc damage is the basis of diagnosis in
glaucoma (Hoskins Kass, 1989). If the eye pressure is not within the normal range
or if the optic nerve looks unusual, doctors may perform a visual field test that maps
out a person s field vision, or perform a test to check whether the angle where the
iris meets the cornea is opened or closed. The optic nerve and visual field changes of

The Health Care Providers Didn t Understand The Lee s...
The health care providers didn t understand the Lee s culture. The doctors never took
the time to understand the Hmong culture and instead assumed that their practices
may have been what was negatively affecting Lia s recovery. According to Fadiman
(2003), in the hospital they would call the shaman witch doctoring (p. 35). Many
times the Lees wouldn t understand the instructions of the doctors and I believe this
also impacted the way that they thought of medicine. The doctors loved Lia and so
did her parents, but they just had different ways of thinking. The Lees thought that
sickness comes from the soul, and the doctors believed that there was a physiological

I think the main point in this story is not to give up, but instead to be patient and
have the courage to fight back.
According to the Hmong culture a shaman helps to cure the soul. A doctor cures
physiological problems. As we learn throughout this class there is a difference
between an illness and a disease. An illness or a disease may have the absence of
the other. In most cases an illness can be present without a disease. In the case of
Lia there was a presence of both illness and disease. If txiv neeb and the American
doctor would have balanced their practices and learned from each other, this
would have positively affected the way the Lees thought about modern medicine. I
believe that faith plays an important role in Lia s case, and if the doctors would
have understood the way that txiv neeb thought and vice versa, the Lees would
have trusted American doctors and medicine more. Learning from txiv neeb would
have also helped the American doctors in Lia s case and in other cases when
treating Hmong patients by understanding their culture. It is important for the
doctors to understand the Hmong culture and specifically the way that a txiv neeb
works because in Merced a third of the population were Hmong and used a tixv
neeb as their main source of healing. A txiv neeb takes the time to be with a patient
while a doctor would only spend 15 minutes with them. A txiv neeb could have learn

Violence in the Media Essay
Violence in the Media
In today s world, there is an endless amount of information available to people
everywhere around the globe. Mass media is definitely shaping our world, whether
it is in a positive way or a negative way. Television and the radio waves provide us
with hours of entertainment. The emergence of the Internet allows us to access
thousands of pages of information within the reach our very own fingertips. But with
the convenience of all this information comes along a certain level of responsibility.
As a society, we Americans must decide what is appropriate information and
entertainment for the masses to access and enjoy. But does today s society give too
much leeway in what it thinks as appropriate? Does increased ... Show more content

A glance or other expression can be a violation when a differential in power or
opportunity exists between characters. Violence can occur without involving
violation. Much professional sport involves considerable violence, but at least when
the rules are obeyed, little violation.
This distinction is important because it is violence that clouds an impressionable
mind, not violation. This is so because a violation would have a somewhat
reasonable cause, while violence is reckless and chaotic in its nature. According to
E.F Dubow and L.S Miller, authors of TelevisionViolence and Aggressive Behavior:
Social Science Perspectives on Television, Ignoring consequences of violence
(including the pain of victims, the victims families, and the families of
perpetrators) or depicting the consequences unreasonably sets in motion a
destructive encoding process. There could be found a direct correlation between
aggressive behavior and violence witnessed on television. The more violence
watched, the more desensitized a viewer would become. Dubow and Miller further
state viewers become [fearful] and begin to identify with the aggressors and the
aggressors solutions to various problems. It is this identification that causes violent
behaviors to become encoded in the person s mind when exposed to repeated violent
acts. The person may then come to see the world as a bleak and sinister place. Along

Vacuum Truck Excavation Case Study
Vacuum Truck Excavation Cardno developed a new process that includes standard,
archival research coupled with ground penetrating radar investigations to identify
potential historic archaeological features at any given project area. This analysis is
followed by controlled excavation with vacuum trucks to locate and excavate features
more accurately than traditional Phase I methodology. This technique has the
potential to determine National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility
without the need for a traditional Phase II evaluation, and helps minimize accidental
discoveries after project construction has begun. Light Detection and Ranging
(LiDAR) Analysis To assist in locating archaeological sites and to more efficiently
focus field efforts, Cardno has employed the use of LiDAR data to generate targets
for shovel testing. Since human habitation and/or activities tend to occur in locations
that are of relatively higher elevation, the LiDAR data can be explored to find small

Cultural Background Of Beowulf
The poem Beowulf, is the story of a warrior named beowulf who comes to help the
king of the Danes named Hrothgar. Hrothgar s kingdom was being destroyed by a
terrible monster named Grendel. Beowulf slays this beast with his bare hands by
ripping off Grendel s arm. Grendel s mother returned to the Danes seeking a
vengeance due to the death of her son. Beowulfdefeats her underwater with a magical
sword and presents the king with Grendels head. Beowulfreturned to his homeland,
the Geats, and becomes a king who ruled for fifty years. Then a dragon came to his
homeland and he had to fight one last time. He killed the dragon, but ended up
getting wounded in battle and died. The central idea of Beowulf is honesty is a
valuable trait to have. To understand Beowulf one should understand the cultural
background, the portrayal of characters, and the theme of words versus deeds.
When reading Beowulf it is important to understand the Viking cultural background
such as the battle boast. A battle boast is the warrior or hero telling the story of
some of their most and successful battles. While in today s society may think this
is rude it is not rude in the Viking culture. In their culture it is them showing they
will be a good hero to the kingdom they are trying to protect. Beowulf began to
speak of his swimming match and said I was the strongest swimmer of all...
Through my own hands, the fury of battle had finished off the sea beast (534 558). It
may sound as if he is bragging but
The Relationship Of Feminism And The Three Factors
The Relationship of Feminism and the Three Factors
In the past, women were possessions of men. Furthermore, women were compelled to
follow every single order from men unconditionally. However, in contrast to this
century, women today have more freedom as they go to work. How history, fashion,
and career women have greatly influenced feminism.
According to history, feminism is the chronological narrative of the movements and
ideologies aimed at equal rights for women. While feminists around the world have
different causes, and goals, depending on time, culture, and country, working to
obtain women s rights . (History of Feminism) It should be considered as feminist
movements. There were four important waves of feminism throughout history. These
four waves greatly influenced feminism, and each wave was an important turning
point in history. (History of Feminism) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, with early feminism , there were three important waves that were the
process how people try to make men and women equal. Many people tried to get
equality between men and women, women s suffrage, female education rights, better
working conditions. And these people sometimes hole the demonstration. This action
is called the first wave of feminism , and it occurred during 19th and 20th centuries.
The wave that occurred after the first wave of feminism is called the second wave of
feminism . This wave was different from the first wave of feminism . During this
wave, the people discussed about cultural inequalities, gender norms, and the role of
women in society (A History of Feminism). However, fruitlessly, women could not
get the equality between men, this wave is called the third wave of feminism .

The Role Of Modernism In Conrad Vs. Richardson
Conrad vs. Richardson: The Fight for the New Woman
Modernism emerged onto the literature scene with many purposes, one of which
being the experimentation with normative ideals in literature. The emergence of
modernism in the western world arrives at a pivotal time during the women s rights
movement (Ross 25). Dorothy Richardson s The Tunnel, the fourth book in a
thirteen book series titled Pilgrimage, is an influential and early feminist novel for
its date of publication of 1918. Miriam Henderson, the protagonist of this novel
leads a life completely independent from the financial and social stability that a man
may bring to a marriage. Though Miriam experiences a certain level of tumult
towards her role in society as a new woman, Richardson provides the entirety of the
novel for Miriam s growth and agency of her own life. Joseph Conrad, a prominent
author during the modernist period, claims in his Author s Note that his novel The
Secret Agent is telling Winnie Verloc s story (Conrad 36), despite Mr. Verloc s self
proclaimed nature as a secret agent . Conrad s attempts at creating a feminist and
modernist image of Winnie are shadowed by the constant presence of a man behind
her actions. Conrad s use of repetition of the words free woman in the text falsifies
this claim even further. If the purpose of modernist literature is to break conventions
of the past such as gender ideals of women in marriage, why do The Tunnel and The
Secret Agent differ so wildly in their
Life Pi By Yann Martel And The Movie Life Of Pi Directed...
Many famous novels have been rearranged in order to make movies. However, the
quality of the movie, a lot of the times, depends on the changes made when adapting
the novel to film. The director of the movie needs to make sure that the film does not
cut off significant parts, and at the same time, abstain from the unnecessary parts the
writer made without changing the whole theme. Moreover, they need to add in more
characters and scenes to make the film more creative and understandable. In this
essay, the comparison of differences in the novel Life of Piby Yann Marteland the
movie Life of Pi directed by Lee Ann will be discussed.
The setting has not changed when it is transferred to the movie. The settings are:
Pondicherry, India; the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So Pi s mother forces Pi to work for a dance class to calm down, but one of the
dancers soon adapt a deep relationship with Pi. This situation actually makes Pi s
move to Canada more difficult. Thus, it led to another conjecture of Pi was trying to
hide his girlfriend onto the lifeboat and bring her also to Canada, because in the
movie, Pi mentioned, ... but I don t remember saying goodbye.
What books cannot achieve is the sceneries and effects that film can include.
Compare to the book, Lee created more stunning scenes using special effects. When
the readers reach to the point of Pi describing the ocean, they can try their best to
imagine the whole landscape and situation, but the feeling of helplessly floating on
the ocean cannot be illustrated using only personal experiences. The ocean in the
movie can remind the audiences about how small people are compared to the world
the irresistible sense of unknown and tininess, would provoke people to think about
their origins. The sunken scene of the ship Tsimtsum is tiny compared to Titanic , but
at the moment of the ship sank, when Pi is floating on the dark ocean in the night, the
drowning feeling that audiences can experience certainly is not worse than Titanic .
Lee used lots of scenes and background music to bring immersive feeling to the
audiences. When it reached to the storm scene, the camera
Urban Land Use And Transportation Planning
Question 1. This approach has several advantages. First, it provides much more
spatially detailed information than traditional data at the aggregate level of
planning districts. Hence, using this disaggregate information, we can suggest
policy implications to establish specific land use and transportation planning.
UrbanSim, one of the advanced microsimulation model developed by University of
Washington, uses gridcells of 150*150 meter, which presents spatially detailed
structure and enables researchers to evaluate current urban land use patterns as
well as predict future urban land use change at the micro level. However, a
building scale analysis provides much more benefits because it is a more realistic
model and can be easily combined with current urban big data. For example, if this
agent based model is combined with complex human behaviors data, it can provide
much more specific information for predicting events of an emergency such as a
building fire and disasters from earthquake or tsunami. Also, if this model is
combined with information on spatial human activities from mobile phone, it can
provide great benefits for managing spatial and temporal planning for the urban
places. More specifically, we can identify hot spots during daytime and nighttime,
which can help to predict travel demands as well land use demand. Second, with the
building scale dataset, we can deal with a variety of urban problems and issues. For
example, energy is one of the big issues in our

  • 1. Essay About Racism And Discrimination Composing an essay on the pervasive and complex issues surrounding racism and discrimination is undoubtedly a challenging task. The subject matter demands a delicate balance of sensitivity, thorough research, and a nuanced understanding of historical and contemporary contexts. To begin with, one must navigate the intricacies of defining racism and discrimination, acknowledging that these terms encompass a broad spectrum of experiences and manifestations. Tackling such a weighty topic requires careful consideration of various perspectives, as the issues at hand are deeply rooted in historical injustices, cultural biases, and systemic structures. Researching the historical context is crucial, delving into the roots of racism and discrimination, examining how these phenomena have evolved over time, and understanding their impact on different communities. This involves grappling with uncomfortable truths, confronting the darker chapters of human history, and acknowledging the ongoing struggles faced by marginalized groups. Furthermore, addressing contemporary instances of racism and discrimination requires a keen awareness of current events, social dynamics, and the subtleties of systemic inequality. This involves staying abreast of the latest developments and engaging with diverse sources to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of these issues. The writing process itself is an exercise in careful articulation. Crafting an essay on racism and discrimination demands clarity of expression, empathy, and an ability to convey complex ideas in a manner that is both accessible and impactful. Striking the right tone is essential, as the goal is not only to inform but also to foster a thoughtful and empathetic response from the reader. In conclusion, writing an essay on racism and discrimination is no easy feat. • 2. The Morality Of Torture On The Middle East Today And The... Morality of Torture. With the issues going on in the Middle East today and the war on terrorism, the use of torture including murder, is a very widespread and controversial issue. Torture is viewed as morally wrong; therefore it is also legally wrong as well, not just on the home front but internationally as well (Is Torture Ever Justified). However, torture is sometimes not only right, but is needed for a greater good. With the case of torture you may not be able to see whether it is clearly wrong or right. This essay will address three situations where torture may be viewed as correct on a moral standpoint. It is clearly and completely wrong if torture is used on an innocent victim without a true greater good trying to be achieved. Saving innocent lives, taking down terrorists, and punishing them in institutions are cases where torture is should be sound. Even more so, torture in those cases should be welcomed as methods of punishment and further advancement in situations where intelligence needs to extracted for the saving of lives or the take down of terrorist activities. In no way should the use of torture be legalized for the use of the public, but in uses for the armed forces and law enforcement there should be rules and regulations that protect them if the use of torture is absolutely necessary. Millers definition of torture is the intentional infliction of extreme physical suffering on some non consenting, defenseless, other person for the purpose of breaking

Ancient Egyptian civilization is one of the longest running societies in recorded history, and counterintuitively, this society came to fruition in one of the largest arid desert areas in the world (Kemp 2006: 8). . The initial success of a society is often determined by the resources made available to them, such as food and water, which emphasizes the importance for the NileRiver, which ran through one of the driest desert regions. Lakes and other water sources in Egypt also exhibited this drying trend. The first article I chose to use for my research paper, is from the scientific journal American Scientist, called Meat Eating Among the Earliest Humans, written by Briana Pobiner who is a paleoanthropologist at the Smithsonian s National Museum of Natural History. In this article, Pobiner discusses the biological evolution of humans, how human meat consumption evolved over time to facilitate the growth of human brain size to become the intelligent and sentient beings we are today, and whether or not we still need to eat meat as our ancestors did. Since Duncan has been murdered, they must flee to keep themselves safe. Unlike for the twins, the only thing that they had at stake was their idea for HarvardConnection being stolen. In this situation, Shakespeare makes the reader more sympathetic for Donalbain and Malcolm than Sorkin does for the Winklevoss twins. This shows how although both characters are similar, their situations are very different and the characters in Macbeth have it worse. Secondly, Lady Macbeth and Sean Parker are two characters that are similar in the sense that they are the real people in control behind the scenes. Although everyone may think that Macbeth is strong and a good leader, Lady Macbeth controls him and convinces him to commit terrible crimes. One of Lady Macbeth s way of controlling Macbeth is to question his manhood. Although they are one of the most ancient practices of medicine, certain herbal supplements have no impact on the body while others do. Herbs are a type of plant, but the stem of an herb is not as hardy, [and does not have a] woody structure which makes herbs easy to consume ( Herbs ). It lets conservatives co opt and abandon virtually any issue at will When Ronald Reagan was in office, he enjoyed the title of The Great Communicator. It was a title he earned, and conservatives embraced his oratorical skills as a valuable asset. By the time Bill Clinton brought his own superior communication skills to the office of the President, conservatives attacked him for being too touchy feely. The good became the bad, with no reference to coherence. If conservatism can be said to have guiding principles, Russell Kirk has probably constructed the most plausible list of them. I won t rehash what he has already done, but I will draw your attention specifically to the fifth and six entries on his list. His fifth principle, which he dubs the principle of variety, holds that: For the preservation of a healthy diversity in any civilization, there must survive orders and classes, differences in material condition, and many sorts of inequality. King Lear Play vs. Movie Essay King Lear Summer Reading Report # 1 Alejandro Ramirez July 28, 2010 Mrs. Colton King Lear by William Shakespeare tells the tragedy of Lear, King of England, who slowly, throughout the course of the play becomes mad and eventually dies. There have been many film adaptations of the play all of which try and remain as close to the original play; however, none appear to keep the same meaning of Shakespeare s text more than director Richard Eyre s film version of King Lear (1997). Shakespeare focuses in on each character s flaws and their contributions to the consequences at the end of the play and although Eyre does the same in his film, he adds minor actions and scenes to the play to give characters of the play a light ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This makes the audience view Lear as obviously superior to Kent and it also demonstrates the total control and power Lear has over Kent by banishing his servant. The remainders of Act I and Act II in Eyre s film focus on the conflict between Lear and his two daughters, Goneril and Regan. Goneril and Regan begin looking down on their father and take away more of his privileges every chance that they get. They reduce Lear s hundred knights down to fifty. Goneril and Regan s tone of voice when arguing with Lear about reducing his number of knights down is vehement. Goneril complains about how the palace seems more like a tavern because of Lear s knights demeanor, her voice quivers slightly, making it seem like she doesn t want to have to argue with her father, in the play this change of tone is absent. This suggests that although Goneril cares more about the way others see her and material objects than the safety of her father. Both Shakespeare and Eyre emphasize the consequences of Lear s choice to give up his power and give it to his two eldest daughters, Regan and Goneril. In Act III, a violent storm had broken out. Lear, not wanting to dismiss any of his knights, refused to stay with either of his daughters and headed out into the storm. It is out in the storm, where Lear and Kent meet Poor Tom (Edgar). Lear seeing Poor Tom, with no luxury admires him and tries to imitate his style.

Smith et. al (2010) wrote about a special case of a patient named FL. She was in a car accident in 2005 and reported difficulty retaining information from one day to the next. She describes her memory as unaffected over the course of the day but when she falls asleep, the memory for each day disappears. FL also, is able to recall things from before her accident. Lucy, a fictional character created for a movie, shares many things in common with FL, thus showing that the film is accurate to the disorder. It also is interesting to know that FL like Lucy was somehow able to remember something s. According to Smith et. al (2010), For some tests, unbeknownst to FL, material learned on the previous day was intermixed with material learned on the same day as the test. In other words, FL sometimes mixed in previously learned material that she did not recall learning due to her impairment with material that she learned that day. This idea of intermixing material was also accurate
  • 16. The Main Ideas of Liberal Political Theory Examine the main ideas of Liberal political theory It is perhaps safe to say that the most prominent political philosophy in contemporary era is liberalism. Liberalism is based on the ideas of liberal political theorists of the last three hundred years. Among these ideas, the first and most important deals with the question of liberty. Political theorists such as John Locke and John Stuart Mill argued that liberty of individual citizens must be upheld by the state. Mill particularly stated that the state should be liberal by default. The burden of proving that liberty should be restricted or prohibited should lie on the states. Unless they can provide such proof, all citizens should by presumption be at liberty. Locke, Rousseau, and Hobbes stated that liberty could be restricted under certain circumstances. For instance, when the state is threatened by a revolt, and since the state is the guarantor of liberty of all its subjects, the state is justified in curtailing some liberal policies but temporarily. The government under liberal political theory is viewed as a necessary evil. The theory suggests that the power and the role of the state should be minimized. There should also be a balance of power in the state. Democracy is essential for liberal political theory. Citizens should enjoy both liberty and the freedom to elect or, in the absence of liberal political order, overthrow the government. But the liberties of citizens cannot be guaranteed in a state of anarchy.

Of the numerous cosmic entertainment franchises, Star Trek and Star Wars undoubtedly claim the title of the two most successful, and with great power comes great controversy. As long as the two franchises have existed, Star Trekand Star Wars have sparked some of the most intense conflicts that could possibly occur between nerds. With lightsabers in hand and phasers set to stun, Star Wars and Star Trek ignite battles at the box office, with critics and among super fans to ultimately decide which is the most popular. The senior of the two space franchises, Star Trek, began back in 1966 with Star Trek: The Original Series, starring William Shatner as Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock. Before the release of Star Wars, Star Trek: The Original Series was canceled, and an animated series debuted and canceled, which suggests that early Star Trek had low popularity. Then, in 1977, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope was released, boasting a record breaking box office, the establishment of an instant fan club, and the title of the highest grossing film in America. From a purely numerical standpoint, Star Trek and Star Wars each prove to be more prolific than the other in certain categories. For instance, Star Trek has debuted seven television series and thirteen films while Star Wars has released

The Issue Of Mineral Rights Essay As a first time homebuyer in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I thought I had very carefully prepared myself for all that the process would involve, including gathering income and financial documentation, qualifying for a mortgage, arranging for a thorough inspection, evaluating needs and desires from a home and finding a reputable agent to represent my interests. One area I never considered, however, was the issue of mineral rights. To be perfectly honest, although I d heard the term, I d never given consideration to what it actually meant. But that all changed in the middle of my home buying process and I d like to share with you the knowledge I ve gained through extensive research I completed to protect my own rights and the rights I would possess as a soon to be homeowner. According to propertylaw, two different forms of rights exist in any real property: surface rights and mineral rights. Surface rights refer to any structure erected above the surface or sub surface structures that do not exceed a certain depth, as well as rights to use all surface property surrounding structures in accordance with zoning ordinances. Mineral rights refer to mineral substances below a certain depth and the way in which they are preserved, explored or extracted. These mineral substances can include natural gas, oil, or any other substance in common use today that can be mined or otherwise extracted from below the surface. Local laws set the depth below which surface rights terminate

Actually, it is more likely that he is a college student. Hundreds of thousands of college students around the country are in a financial predicament because of the government?s impersonal financial aid policies. The federal government?s current system has too many quirks which end up hurting the people that financial aid is supposed to help. The federal government should change its financial aid policies to take several more factors, such as the percentage of educational expenses paid by the student, into account. The federal government does not use this application for aid. The CSS Profile is a service provided by The College Board. It includes many more factors such as the age of the parents, house payments, and car payments. Mostly expensive private universities use the CSS Profile because their students have much more financial need. The current system does a fairly decent job of predicting the amount of aid needed assuming both the parents and the student are paying for the student?s education. The big problem with the system is that not all parents help pay for their child?s education. According to the current system, the student would have to cover the expected contribution from their parents as well as their own expected contribution should their parents decide not to help foot the bill. For example, if a student from a middle class family which is earning $70,000 a year. Assuming the student was earning $3,000, and that student wanted to attend Duke University, approximately $33,000 a year, the family would be expected to pay $13,641 of the bill for each year2. If the parents choose not to help the student pay, then it would be the student?s responsibility to pay every bit of the $13,641. How many students graduating high school can afford that? I think that this factor could quite possibly be the biggest reason that students think they cannot afford college. Another problem is that the current system actually punishes students for saving their

Essay on The Disaster at Chernobyl The Disaster at Chernobyl On April 26th, 1986, operators at the Chernobyl Power Plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine, ran what they thought to be a routine safety test. But fate was not on the side of these operators. Without warning, reactor #4 became unstable, as it had been operating at a low power for a possible shutdown and the reactor s design caused it to be unsafe at this level of power. Internal temperatures rose. Attempts to cool the system produced the opposite effect. Instantly, the nuclear coresurged with power. At 1:23 p.m., the reactor exploded. However, they incorporate a variety of compelling themes, focusing primarily on death and the fantastic, insomnia and unreality, the absurd and the irrational, and are told often from skillfully interwoven, scrambled points of view. In these stories, Garcia Marquez is attempting to capture the world as presented in Kafka s Metamorphosis. He is striving to not only portray the world as it is, but to invent another dreamlike reality, and in the process demonstrate that the reality and the dream are one and the same. These bizarre and occasionally disturbing excursions into surreal states of consciousness are poignantly Kafkaesque. For example, the story The Third Resignation, contains a vivid reenactment of Gregor Samsa s bug like condition. In this story, instead of waking up as a dung beetle, the main character is trapped in a frightening existence of living death. He has been living in a coffin for 18 years, since he turned seven, when his mother was told by the doctor, Madam, your child has a grave illness: he is dead. Nevertheless...we shall do everything possible to keep him alive beyond death (5). Though he is dead, the main character continues to grow in size and also grows a beard, indicating that he is medically not dead, but, like Gregor Samsa, is completely paralyzed. He spends his entire life trying to figure out whether or not he is alive: A few moments before he had been happy with his death because he had thought he was dead. Because a dead man

Through volunteering at a missing children s program with Sam s Club, I ve learned first hand just how detrimental maltreatment in our society can be and how we must do everything in our power to prevent children from being exposed to maltreatment, provide them with safe and loving environments, and finally, do all we can to rescue and children that are taken or trafficked and place them in safe environments. Child maltreatment is one of the leading reasons why children go missing. The complex web of cultural determinations and predefined ideological system are predominant in the lives of the female characters named Tita, Gertrudis, and Frida Kahlo in the movies Like Water for Chocolate and Frida. Furthermore, throughout history, the development of female idealizations and norms, which powerfully influences the behavior of women throughout society, has derived from a masculine structure that is imposed onto the female gender. Although this is still prevalent in modern culture, throughout the years surrounding the Mexican Revolution, women were perceived as subordinate to men due to particular cultural determinants and predefined beliefs that existed within the structure of society. Specifically, this structure played a leading role in the lives of women, which regarded them as inferior to men while characteristically portraying women in traditional domestic roles, thereby influencing the social norm of femininitythroughout civilization. One latch can store one bit of information. In latches, their outputs are constantly affected by their inputs as long as the enable signal is asserted. In other words, when they are enabled, their content changes immediately when their inputs change. There are basically four main types of latches: SR, SR with enable, D and D with enable. For each type, there are also different variations that enhance their operations. In this section, we will look at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At time t2 we reset the latch by making R = 0. Now, Q goes to 1 and this will constrain Q to go to a 0. On the off chance, we de assert R with the goal that again we have S = R = 1, this time the latch will remain in the reset state as shown at time t3. Notice the two times (at t1 and t3) when both S and R are de asserted. At t1, Q is at a 1, though, at t3, Q is at a 0. At the point when both the two inputs are de asserted, the SR latch keeps up its past state. Past to t1, Q has the value 1, so at t1, Q stays at a 1. Additionally, previous to t3, Q has the value 0, so at t3, Q stays at a 0. In the event that both S and R are asserted, then both Q and Q are equivalent to 1 as shown at time t4. On the off chance that one of the input signals is de asserted sooner than the other, the latch will end up in the state constrained by the signal that was de asserted later as shown at time t5. At t5, R is de asserted first, so the latch goes into the ordinary set state with Q = 1 and Q = 0. An issue exists if both S and R are de asserted at the very same time as shown at time t6. In the event that the both two gates have very same delay then they will both output a 0 at very same time. Feeding the zeros back to the gate input will create a 1, again at the very same time, which again will deliver a 0,
  • 33. Jehovah s Belief Of Jesus And The Archangel Michael 3.Jehovah s Witnesses believe that Jesus and the archangel Michael are the same person. JW believe that Jesus had three periods of existence: 1.In his pre human existence he was called God s only begotten Son because Jehovah created him directly. As the first born of all creation, Jesus was used by God to create all other things. Jesus also had the personal name of Michael the archangel at this time. 2.The second stage of Jesus life was here on earth. He willingly submitted as God transferred his life from heaven to the womb of a Jewish virgin named Mary. 3.He became the Messiah at his baptism, was executed on a torture stake, and rose again spiritually, but not physically. Christian Response: There is absolutely no biblical basis for identifying Jesus with Michael the archangel. Also, the bible teaches that Jesus was the Messiah at birth, and coequal with the Father from all eternity: Philippians 2:5 7 ~ Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bondservant, and being made in the likeness of men. 1 Colossians 1:15 ~ He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. The Greek word used here for first born is Prototokos, which means First in Rank, Supreme. Hebrews 1:4 ~ become so much better than the angels. So we see that Jesus did not regard His equality with God as something to be grasped. This word means to be utilized or asserted. Instead of asserting His equality with the Father, Jesus emptied Himself which means he laid aside His privileges as God and took on the form of a man. 4.Jehovah s Witnesses believe the Holy Spirit is a force and not a real Person. JW does not believe in the Trinity, much less the Holy Spirit as part of the God head. The personality and deity of the Holy Spirit is denied. John 14:16 17 ~ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. The Holy Spirit dwells inside of us, not just an

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pain can be another result of the disease and is affiliated with the height of the intraocular pressure and the velocity with which it rises to that level (Hoskins Kass, 1989). Altered vision is also a possible result of this disease and occurs in many forms. Episodic blurring of vision is frequently arises when rapid increase of intraocular pressure causes corneal edema. Loss of Snellen visual acuity generally appears late in the sequence of glaucoma unless some other problems transpire, such as central retinal vein occlusion. Other symptoms may include things such as a change in the appearance of the eye, halo vision, and redness. Before other symptoms occur, an increased level of intraocular pressure is usually observed. These symptoms and an increase in intraocular pressure are likely to occur in both open angle glaucoma and angle closure glaucoma, which are two of the major types of glaucoma. Visual field defects, defects pertaining to everything a person sees from peripheral vision to central vision, and optic disc damage is the basis of diagnosis in glaucoma (Hoskins Kass, 1989). If the eye pressure is not within the normal range or if the optic nerve looks unusual, doctors may perform a visual field test that maps out a person s field vision, or perform a test to check whether the angle where the iris meets the cornea is opened or closed. Through my own hands, the fury of battle had finished off the sea beast (534 558). It may sound as if he is bragging but
  • 42. The Relationship Of Feminism And The Three Factors The Relationship of Feminism and the Three Factors In the past, women were possessions of men. Furthermore, women were compelled to follow every single order from men unconditionally. However, in contrast to this century, women today have more freedom as they go to work. How history, fashion, and career women have greatly influenced feminism. According to history, feminism is the chronological narrative of the movements and ideologies aimed at equal rights for women. While feminists around the world have different causes, and goals, depending on time, culture, and country, working to obtain women s rights . (History of Feminism) It should be considered as feminist movements. There were four important waves of feminism throughout history. These four waves greatly influenced feminism, and each wave was an important turning point in history. (History of Feminism) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, with early feminism , there were three important waves that were the process how people try to make men and women equal. Many people tried to get equality between men and women, women s suffrage, female education rights, better working conditions. And these people sometimes hole the demonstration. This action is called the first wave of feminism , and it occurred during 19th and 20th centuries. The wave that occurred after the first wave of feminism is called the second wave of feminism . This wave was different from the first wave of feminism . During this wave, the people discussed about cultural inequalities, gender norms, and the role of women in society (A History of Feminism). However, fruitlessly, women could not get the equality between men, this wave is called the third wave of feminism . (Simply History of
  • 43. The Role Of Modernism In Conrad Vs. Richardson Conrad vs. Richardson: The Fight for the New Woman Modernism emerged onto the literature scene with many purposes, one of which being the experimentation with normative ideals in literature. The emergence of modernism in the western world arrives at a pivotal time during the women s rights movement (Ross 25). Dorothy Richardson s The Tunnel, the fourth book in a thirteen book series titled Pilgrimage, is an influential and early feminist novel for its date of publication of 1918. Miriam Henderson, the protagonist of this novel leads a life completely independent from the financial and social stability that a man may bring to a marriage. Though Miriam experiences a certain level of tumult towards her role in society as a new woman, Richardson provides the entirety of the novel for Miriam s growth and agency of her own life. Joseph Conrad, a prominent author during the modernist period, claims in his Author s Note that his novel The Secret Agent is telling Winnie Verloc s story (Conrad 36), despite Mr. Verloc s self proclaimed nature as a secret agent . Conrad s attempts at creating a feminist and modernist image of Winnie are shadowed by the constant presence of a man behind her actions. Conrad s use of repetition of the words free woman in the text falsifies this claim even further. If the purpose of modernist literature is to break conventions of the past such as gender ideals of women in marriage, why do The Tunnel and The Secret Agent differ so wildly in their
  • 44. Life Pi By Yann Martel And The Movie Life Of Pi Directed... Many famous novels have been rearranged in order to make movies. However, the quality of the movie, a lot of the times, depends on the changes made when adapting the novel to film. The director of the movie needs to make sure that the film does not cut off significant parts, and at the same time, abstain from the unnecessary parts the writer made without changing the whole theme. Moreover, they need to add in more characters and scenes to make the film more creative and understandable. In this essay, the comparison of differences in the novel Life of Piby Yann Marteland the movie Life of Pi directed by Lee Ann will be discussed. The setting has not changed when it is transferred to the movie. The settings are: Pondicherry, India; the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So Pi s mother forces Pi to work for a dance class to calm down, but one of the dancers soon adapt a deep relationship with Pi. This situation actually makes Pi s move to Canada more difficult. Thus, it led to another conjecture of Pi was trying to hide his girlfriend onto the lifeboat and bring her also to Canada, because in the movie, Pi mentioned, ... but I don t remember saying goodbye. What books cannot achieve is the sceneries and effects that film can include. Compare to the book, Lee created more stunning scenes using special effects. When the readers reach to the point of Pi describing the ocean, they can try their best to imagine the whole landscape and situation, but the feeling of helplessly floating on the ocean cannot be illustrated using only personal experiences. The ocean in the movie can remind the audiences about how small people are compared to the world the irresistible sense of unknown and tininess, would provoke people to think about their origins. The sunken scene of the ship Tsimtsum is tiny compared to Titanic , but at the moment of the ship sank, when Pi is floating on the dark ocean in the night, the drowning feeling that audiences can experience certainly is not worse than Titanic . Lee used lots of scenes and background music to bring immersive feeling to the audiences. When it reached to the storm scene, the camera
  • 45. Urban Land Use And Transportation Planning Question 1. This approach has several advantages. First, it provides much more spatially detailed information than traditional data at the aggregate level of planning districts. Hence, using this disaggregate information, we can suggest policy implications to establish specific land use and transportation planning. UrbanSim, one of the advanced microsimulation model developed by University of Washington, uses gridcells of 150*150 meter, which presents spatially detailed structure and enables researchers to evaluate current urban land use patterns as well as predict future urban land use change at the micro level. However, a building scale analysis provides much more benefits because it is a more realistic model and can be easily combined with current urban big data. For example, if this agent based model is combined with complex human behaviors data, it can provide much more specific information for predicting events of an emergency such as a building fire and disasters from earthquake or tsunami. Also, if this model is combined with information on spatial human activities from mobile phone, it can provide great benefits for managing spatial and temporal planning for the urban places. More specifically, we can identify hot spots during daytime and nighttime, which can help to predict travel demands as well land use demand. Second, with the building scale dataset, we can deal with a variety of urban problems and issues. For example, energy is one of the big issues in our
