The Earliest Microscopes and Pond Ecology Essay
The earliest microscope magnified the object ten times the actual size. They were made up of a tube
with a plate for the object at one end and, at the other, a lens which magnified the object. In 1609,
Galileo worked with the lenses and made more advanced instrument with a focusing device. Anton
van Leeuwenhoek taught himself methods of polishing tiny lenses of extreme curvature which gave
best magnification of that time up to 270 diameters. This led to the building of his microscopes and his
discoveries. He was also the first to see and explain yeast plants, bacteria, life in a drop of water, and
the circulation of blood corpuscles in capillaries. In his life, he used his microscope to make lots of

these parts in microscope help observe the specimen. Pond Ecology is the interaction of life in pond
with environment. Pond have low oxygen levels, little animal life, and lack of food supply. A pond
contains mostly water, few nutrients, and less aquatic life. Organisms live, grow, and die in the pond.
The remains decay in pond and are released back to keep the cycle going. The aquatic organism take

organism respiration rate and energy needed. Pond organism such as turtles and frog bury themselves
in mud at bottom of sea and hibernate. To conclude, pond have a life cycle they go through (intext

jaws that can be preserved in fossil record. Rotifers are multi cellular

Abortion is Murder Essay example
The battle over abortion began with the case of Roe versus Wade on January 22, 1973. This conflict
has quickly become one of the most predominant matters of society. By analyzing philosophical
theories, biological facts, and psychological affects of abortion, one is able to conclude that abortion is
murder. Through education and awareness programs, abortion can be acknowledged as immoral and
unethical, thus preventing such crimes from being committed. This process of education starts with
the recent history of the battle over abortion in our country. Roe versus Wade began an entire series of
major events that relate to abortion. Many of these events have swayed the public view on abortion
towards both the pro life and pro choice sides ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many opinions that coincide with the argument about whether or not abortion is murder. A
common factor that many people consider when deciding their viewpoint is to determine whether or
not they believe unborn children classify as living beings. The first step of this process is to define the
meaning of personhood. Pro lifers agree that personhood begins at the moment of conception;
however, the majority of those with a pro choice viewpoint would argue that this is not the case. The
pro choice population breaks down personhood into three categories: human life, human being, and
human person.
According to their definitions, a child has human life when he or she develops tissue, and is
considered to be a human being once he or she is born. Also according to this system of classification,
human person is obtained with the development of personality and feelings. Therefore the common
pro life belief is that life begins at the moment of conception, as opposed to the common pro choice
belief that conception is merely the forming of a zygote and human personhood develops over time,
but not before birth. Both of these opinions are defendable and so we must look for scientific evidence
in order to determine which opinion is most accurate.
Observing philosophical views of abortion may be

The Horror Of The Zombie Apocalypse
Daniel Drezner book addresses how the world would potentially react should the Zombie Apocalypse
start while relating it to international relations. While discussing the anarchical nature of the world, in
the realist argument, he addresses the fact that it is not likely that any one state would be able to gain
complete control of the world. However, if the entire world is being overtaken by a zombie plague it is
not outside the realm of possibility that survivors of various nations would come together and merge
with whatever power still existed and divvy out more power to that group or individual. A good old
fashioned military takeover would be just the thing to create an uneasy world wide alliance with other
militaristic organizations across the world against the zombie hordes. The military would easily be
able to take charge in a global catastrophe of this nature relatively quickly and with little resistance
from the common people. They are one of the most disciplined and structured organizations in regards
to bureaucracy and other political organizations, and would not hesitate to change the protocols of war
against an end of the world type of threat such as a zombie takeover. Also, military tradition and codes
of conduct cross borders with significantly more similarities than do political ideologies and
governmental structures, which would result in there being a much easier and more unified alliance
than could ever be achieved in any other global unification setting.

The Problem We All Live With By Norman Rockwell
The Problem We All Live With is a 1964 painting by Norman Rockwell. An iconic image of the Civil
Rights Movement in the United States, it depicts Ruby Bridges, a six year old African American girl,
on her way into an all white public school in New Orleans on November 14, 1960 during the process
of racial desegregation. The little girl in the painting titled The Problem We All Live With is walking
to school in a white dress, white socks and white shoes. Her hair is parted in neat plaits and she is
carrying a book and a ruler. The use of white Rockwell is symbolic of the new found optimism in the
US and the hope for the future the girl appears confident and proud, even as she is overshadowed by
U.S. marshals in muted gray suits. Because of

Analysis Of Dream Deferred By Langston Hughes
Dream deferred The poem I will discuss today is Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes it is located on
page 620 of the textbook. The theme of this poem is postponing your dreams can lead to destruction in
your life. The tone of this poem is uncertainty. The author is very uncertain of what happens to a
dream deferred. The two elements of figurative language the author used in this poem to convey the
theme are simile and metaphor. The first element of figurative language I will discuss is simile. A
simile is when you compare two unlike things using like or as. This is shown multiply times
throughout the poem for example it says, Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun. The author is
comparing a dream deferred to a dried up raisin a raisin is already dry but if left out in the sun it
becomes hard to eat which mean it loses it nutritional purpose. ... Show more content on

(Spa.walsingham.org, n.d) This also takes us back to the tone of this poem which is uncertainty
because he is asking a question he is not telling the reader a dream deferred dries up like a raisin in the
sun he is asking does a dream deferred dry up like a raisin in the sun a person only asks a question
when their uncertain about something. Another example of a simile used in the poem was Or fester
like a sore and then run? This takes us back to the theme and tone if you have sore you want it to dry
up, so it can heal but if it festers and run that means it is infected and will take longer to heal.
(Spa.walsingham.org, n.d) . The dream that festers becomes infected with the disease of restlessness

The Importance Of St. Bernard Of Clairvaux
Proverbs 5:23 says, For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly (NIV). This
statement does not only seem to be the foundation of St. Bernard s teachings, but it is also provides a
glimpse to a life without Christian mysticism. St. Bernard of Clairvaux lived from 1090 1153 AD and
lived as a Cistercian abbot, acting as the mouthpiece for Christian mysticism during the Middle Ages.
Mysticism is defined, The spiritual discipline that enables an individual to experience union with God
or a divine principle (Quinn). Throughout St. Bernard s letters and teachings, he wanted the reader to
grasp the meaning and necessary steps to have an established relationship with Christ. St. Bernard of
Clairvaux was a mediator for Christian Mysticism because his teachings reflected mysticism s values
of discipline, obedience, and selflessness. St. Bernard stressed the importance of discipline, as it is not
only beneficial for someone to strengthen their relationship with Christ, but it is necessary for
someone to discipline themselves in order to draw closer to Christ. St. Bernard says in Some Letters of
Saint Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux, Thus I have determined to follow him as master always and
everywhere, but on the condition never to deviate from the authority of the Rule, which, as he himself
is witness, I have sworn and determined to keep (St. Bernard). In this excerpt of St. Bernard, he is
illustrating that the person must refrain from things that are

The Reality Of Television Series
We live in a century where most all the things are normal in today s day, or maybe that is the way I see
things. I was born in the 90 s, where most of the children didn t have a cellphone, instead they had
bicycles, dirt and not stress at all. There were good times back then. Today we have smart phones,
laptops, tablets, and of course we have Netflix, a global provider of streaming movies and TV series. I
have to mention that there is one TV show in particular that has captivated my eyes, its name; The
Walking Dead . Maybe the title of this American horror drama television series sounds a little
mysterious and scary, first of all, because the serious shows a world overrun by zombies, but besides
that, I have learned a lot from this TV show. One of the first things that I want to mention is that I like
this TV show not because it has a lot of suspense and special effects, but for the way it can easily be
related to this world. The Walking Dead is about a sheriff who awakens from a long comma to
confront a new world full of zombies that he never could imagine he would live. He reunites with his
family and becomes the leader of a group he forms with other survivors. Together they struggle to
survive in and adapt to a world filled with zombies and some humans who are even more dangerous
than the zombies themselves, but, why I relate this series with our world? We don t kill zombies, or
have guns. I think each of us has different expectation and I am sure that

Analysis Of The Bluest Eye
In The Bluest Eye, Pecola the protagonist is taken under the Macteer family s wing much like The
African family is community based and the nurturing quality is not contained within the nuclear
family, but is rather the responsibility of the entire community (Ranström). In traditional Africa each
child has a place and is welcome in the community. The act of parenting another child was not odd
because every adult that lived in each community believed that any child is welcome in anyone s
home. This, however, is not the case for Pecola. Although traditional African culture was integrated
into The Bluest Eye, it was not fully combined. Pecola lives in a very abusive household and always
wonders to herself, what if she were white, what if she had blue eyes? Would it change things,
hopefully for the better?
Pecola obsesses over all things white because the town makes fun of her blackness. Pecola is alone
due to her lack of beauty. In one scene Pecola is laughed at called e mo and other names as other black
children make fun of her blackness. Morrisons uses collective voice to show the racial segregation at
the time was not only white people, but it was the different shades of black. Something that someone
cannot control. The boy bullying Pecola had extemporized a verse made up of two insults about
matters over which the victim had no control: the color of her skin (Morrison, check page#). Pecola,

Spanish American War Vs Vietnam War Essay
Early conflicts did share similarities with Vietnam. Some historians refer to the imperialist period as
the Great Aberration , the turning point in foreign policy. It was considered before this period the
Americans were isolationists. The Spanish American War in 1898 was a clear representation of an
expansionist foreign policy. The main motive behind the conflict was the explosion of the USS Maine,
which was blamed on the Spanish despite there being evidence of it being caused by an internal fault.
Similarly, the explosion of the USS Maddox off the Gulf of Tonkin dragged America directly into war
with North Vietnam after belief that they were involved in the destruction despite there being evidence
against it. The incidents are a clear example ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also used the Spanish conflict to gain control of other Spanish lands in the Latin Americas,
Puerto Rico and Guam to expand their economy by searching for new markets abroad. For instance,
the Americans looked to expand into the east in the 1890s to access raw materials and to export over
produced goods to help the American economy. The annexation of Hawaii on July 7, 1898, was an
effort to create a stronger economy because it was considered the crossroads to the Pacific so by
annexing Hawaii the, the Americans were able to gain access to other countries such as the Philippines
which they purchased for 20 million dollars displaying motives of expansion. In 1901 when the
Filipinos wanted independence the US refused which led to the killing of 50,000 to 200,000 Filipinos
in a war between the Philippines and the USA which suggests that the motive for the war in the
Philippines was to keep their economic influence and to show the great military power of the US. This
was not uncommon in American foreign policy as they also went to war in Vietnam to uphold their
values of capitalism but unlike in the Philippines, it was unsuccessful. Therefore, Vietnam was typical
of US foreign policy as the events in the Philippines gave the US confidence to intervene in other

The Issue Of Income Inequality Essay
Income inequality has slowly become an issue gaining momentum over the last thirty five years, did
we see it coming, I think so. It has always been an issues, only after decades of misleading political
leadership spanning decades are people finally fed up of being misled and lied to. The current election
for the next president has brought about a voice of the American people to demand a change within
our three failing political systems that govern America. Only this change, I believe is going to bring a
country to its knees, the wealth holders are not, going to just step aside and willing unlock the scales
of wealth that to encumber its poor, they are going to dig in and hold fast to what they have stolen and
hoarded since the time of slavery. Broken at the foundation Congress failed in its obligation to keep a
close watch on the small increasing hikes in taxation, that repeatedly brought sanctions on the poor,
that created a false redistribution of wealth in America, for the last three decades income disparity has
reach an all time high for selective groups of Americans. The government influenced income
inequality and growth by shifting support to ambiguous government supported programs, that
benefitted a selective groups of Americans by lessening their taxation rate, while snowballing the tax
imposed on the poorest Americans. The riches 1 10% have accumulated an increase in wealth
approximately 7.5 times over the normal working household in the US. The article

Summary Of Family Guy And Freud By Antonia Peacocke
In Antonia Peacocke s essay, Family Guy and Freud: Jokes and their Relations to the Unconscious ,
she defended how vulgar Family Guy is. Although she agreed with many people who the show is a
cartoon comedy that packs more gags per minute about race, sex, incest, bestiality, etc. (pg 300),
Peacocke clearly stated Family Guy is not harmful and derogatory, but a comical parody of day to day
circumstances about taboos. (pg ) She supported her thesis very well by including many evidences
from Family Guy, when it talked about social injustices and such. However, there are a few things that
made the essay imperfect. Peacocke forgot to include a counter argument for her own claims. Her
organization is also very poor, making her essay quite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The flow of her essay is not effective, because her thoughts seem to be everywhere, jumping from one
place to the next. It harms her strong argument from the beginning to prove that funniest jokes are the
ones who hit home the hardest. (pg 308) For example, she said she disagrees with George Will s
reductive and generalized statement (pg ) in his article, Reality Television: Oxymoron about Family
Guy s intelligent points . However, as evidence, she used a few scenes from Family Guy that further
prove Will s point. Left with no explanations, the readers can only assume Peacocke s standpoint has
changed. Throughout her essay, we hear more examples and citations from Family Guy and less from
her. This is a poor strategy because she simply introduces the quotes and evidences, but doesn t
explain what the quotes and evidences meant or how they can further prove her points. The way
Peacocke use her examples and citations gives her arguments a logical background, but she includes a
misunderstanding or no explanations in the

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz The Tragic Fall of Duddy
A man must pursue his dreams. This is certainly true for everyone of the humankind, for if there were
no dreams, there would be no reason to live. Duddy Kravitz understands this perfectly, that is why he
is one of the most ambitious young men of his time. From the moment he hears his grandfather says, A
man without land is nobody, he is prepared to seek the land of his dream no matter what the cost

Duddy is never loved in his family, so originally Duddy is quite content to know that there is someone
who cares about him Yvette. He finds great comradeship in her and has also enjoyed great sex with
her.
But as time passes by, Yvette becomes only a tool to him. He uses her as a medium through which he
can buy the land that he lusts for; because he is a minor and he cannot legally own land. The farmers
would be wary of a young Jew, they might jack up prices or even refuse to sell, but another French
Canadian would not be suspect. Duddy also treats her as a sexual toy. He makes love with Yvette
whenever he wants it, but he does not take Yvette s feelings into consideration: Yvette wanted to wait,
but Duddy insisted, and they made love on the carpet.
He never pays any respect to Yvette and he does ...not know how to treat a woman.

Reel Injun Stereotypes
Reel Injun and Misrepresentation and Native Stereotyping on Screen
Misrepresentation of Natives on screen throughout the 20th century has had an adverse effect on them.
Whether it was positive or negative stereotypes, Natives felt the effect of Hollywood and began to lose
their self identity, their honour, and their pride. Reel Injun takes a look at how movies have defined an
entire race and also documents the rebirth of the Native identity after decades of destructive
Hollywood movies by interviewing notable Native actors, actresses, and activists. By doing so,
director Neil Diamond hopes to silence Hollywood stereotypes and get Hollywood to properly
represent the Native people.
Hollywood s early depictions of Natives consisted of tribesmen and noble savages who are in tune
with Nature. Films such as The Silent Enemy portray these stereotypes on screen with actors like
Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance being shown as tribesmen who are very noble Natives. Although
these stereotypes are positive, they are still stereotypes nonetheless. These stereotypes have caused ...

Barack Obama s Campaign Advertisement Video Essay
Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton s campaign advertisement video, Equal, uses an ardent
emotional theme to declare her firmly on the side of marriage equality, while referencing her
commitment to fighting for women s equality in past decades. Historic fervor permeates Clinton s
style of speech throughout her dialogue. She initiates this by reflecting on the story of America and its
fight towards progress in equality. This dialogue exchanges focus with a tape of a wedding ceremony.
Two men exchanging vows as one of them gives a profession of commitment while reflecting on the
struggle inherent to the nature of their relationship. The pain of a lifetime of discrimination and
decades of yearning for legal fairness is audible in the voice of the speaking imminent husband.
Saturated images flash before the viewer often without giving sufficient time to register what exactly
is being shown. This attempts to give the impression of overwhelming support for the views being
expressed in the dialogue behind the sequences. First we re shown two men walking down a
neighborhood street in autumn, holding hands. Following this are segments of weddings and proposals
between homosexual couples of various ages and ethnicities. The recurring relationship that we see
the progression of, and is the only significant, audible dialogue other than Clinton s, is that of a
handsome couple in white tuxedos, outdoors, exchanging vows. A beautiful summer day with the

involuntary body spasms that threaten to break bones. A woman with HPV clinches her eyes shut as
she receives chemotherapy to treat the cancer that was caused by the virus. If you could prevent these
scenarios from happening, would you? Governor Rick Perry sought to do just that, when he made
Texas the first state to mandate that young girls receive the Gardasil vaccine, the leading vaccine that
prevents against certain strains of HPV. Governor Perry s new mandate will protect people from a
painful, and sometimes fatal, disease. While the decision has gone under fire from people ... Show

However, Jenner s invention became a common practice only a few years after he released it to the
public, and according to The Hutchinson Unabridged Encyclopedia, By 1890 smallpox had virtually
been eradicated from Britain. ( Jenner, Edward (1749 1823) ) From the information about the first
vaccination, we can see that vaccinations have been proven to eliminate deadly diseases, whether they
receive opposition or not. Without immunizations, we would be overcome with diseases, such as
smallpox, polio, and measles.
Unfortunately, there is not a vaccination to protect against every type of cancer. However, the Gardasil
vaccine guards against certain strands of HPV that cause 70% of cervical cancers in women. When
caught early, the Human papillomavirus is treatable, but after the virus has developed into cancer,
there is no cure. Therefore, the person affected begins a painful, uncertain journey to try to save her
life. The Encyclopedia of Women s Health states, Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection may be the
most common viral sexually transmitted disease (STD) in this country. As many as 30 million
Americans are infected with HPV, and each year, an additional 1 million people become infected. (
Human Papillomavirus ). When this many people are affected by a disease that can become cancer, it
would be doltish not to use available resources to prevent it. Nationally and internationally, the HPV
vaccine will significantly

What Does The Clock Symbolize In The Masque Of The Red Death
Benjamin Franklin once said, In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.
This quote is proven true in many pieces of American Literature from past to present. In Edgar Allan
Poe s, The Masque of the Red Death, the ebony clock, the last chamber, and the masked figure are
used as symbols to represent the uncontrollable outcome of human life and exemplify the words of
Benjamin Franklin. Throughout the work, Poe employs a seemingly simple ebony clock to symbolize
the destined time of life, which no one can control. The clock is first introduced by describing the
pendulum s dull, heavy, monotonous clang , which automatically gives the idea that the clock is
oppressive and evokes fear in both the readers and guests (Poe). As the story goes on, the
characteristics of the clock unfold even more and reveal the emotions and actions it suggests. For
instance, the clock s chiming imposes a start stop movement on the festive ... Show more content on

The visitors go to Prince Prospero s last chamber for protection from the Red Death because it is
meant to be impenetrable and a place of safety from the outside world. The room is shrouded in black
velvet tapestries and has windows of a scarlet a deep blood color which contributes to an eerie mood
as the guests enter (Poe). The surroundings and colors of the room provide a grim feeling and also
remind the reader of sadness, terror, and death coming for them. The room s colors reflect what will
inescapably happen to them there. Furthermore, the last chamber is the room in which the visitors died
each in the despairing posture of his fall (Poe). The death of all of the people in the chamber
represents the predestined end of life. The last stage of life is death, and the last chamber is where all
of the visitors die despite the company s belief that it would protect them from the outside

Friends And Such Good Friends Judith Viorst
In the reading, Friends, Good Friends and Such Good Friends, Judith Viorst illustrated that friends are
ranked based on their usefulness, closeness and truthfulness. I agree with the writer as the usefulness
of friends can determine their level of significance in one s life. Firstly, a friend who has the capability
to provide the help required for another would be perceived as more noteworthy. For instance, imagine
if Bill Gates offered to be your pal and forked out ten million dollars to clear your colossal debts,
would he not be immediately shot up to the top of your friends list? Secondly, the level of closeness is
crucial in shaping the rating of a friend. One would only consider another a good friend if both of

Comparison Of Homelessness In The Homeless
Homelessness in Columbus, GA
In 2005 an estimated 100 million people were homeless worldwide, and as many as 1.6 billion were
without proper housing. Homelessness is an often overlooked problem; people do not realize the
extremities of it. In fact, Columbus, GA has one of the highest homelessness rates in Georgia.
Homeless people are all over; they are in our backyard. People look over them every day on their way
to work, school, and home. They are regular people just like everyone else, yet no one takes care of
them. Unfortunate situations can happen to anyone, and when they do people reach out and do what
they need to take care of them; so why do people not do that for the homeless? This is a problem that
desperately needs help. In Boston, they have what is called Housing First. This is an organization that
goes out to the homeless communities, finds them apartments, helps them to get a job and provides a
way for them to get their life back on track. In Columbus, we need to start something similar called
Community First.
Homeless People are constantly blamed themselves for their situation, but often times it has nothing to
do with anything they have done. People can become homeless in a number of ways. Boston s
homeless success stories says that, Kimberly had a nice home and a nice job. But the company she
worked for went under. (qtd. In success stories) Eventually, Kimberly lost everything. Her savings
went under, and she could not afford anything she had, and she

My Favorite Leisure Experiences In My Life
Throughout my life my leisure activities have changed many times. From playing video games; to
sports and hanging out with friends. Out of my many favorite leisure experiences my most favorite
would be hanging out with friends. Being with other people and having fun is one of the best feelings
to me because it takes off all the stress of my life difficulties. It is very important to reflect on one s
past and present leisure experiences because they reminds of the best and most fun memorable
moments in our lives. We live in a very stressful society where we hardly have any fun time due to
work, school, or just our very busy lives. During stressful times or difficult times reflecting on those
memorable moments has a very positive impact on us. As I have grown older I have definitely
experienced many of the levels of Nash s Paradigm of Free Time.
When I was in middle school I participated in activities that would be classified as acts performed
against society on Nash s Paradigm. At the time I was about 14 years old and did not think thoroughly
about my actions. I used to participate in shoplifting and vandalism as my leisure activities. Me and
my friends would hang out after school and tag the walls around our school and would go into stores
to steal snacks or drinks. At the time I did not realise how irresponsible and idiotic my actions were.
At first when I began to tag it had a bad psychological effect on me because I would be paranoid I was
going to get caught by the cops or someone of authority. The more I did it the less paranoid I felt but
never felt completely safe and always had a negative psychological effect. Tagging the walls was a
way to express how I felt at the time. I felt I had to represent my crew which i was involved with.
Participating in these activities did have a physical effect because most of the time I did a lot of
running. Whenever someone would catch us we had to run away as fast as we could and it would get
us tired. It did make me feel good the running had a good effect on my body as it slimed me down a
bit. This was a very social activity. Sometimes we would walk around in groups of 10 15 guys just
messing around and having fun. I did build a lot of friendships at the time by

Evaluation Of An Integrated Lesson Plan
Through the lesson plans that we developed, I ve learned how to implement art that is
developmentally appropriate, meaningful, and challenging for students. The integration of art must be
meaningful to the lesson but also challenging for the students. The integrated lesson plan must also
consider a diverse classroom, allowing all students equal access to what is being taught. Most
importantly, art experiences must help each child meet challenging and achievable learning goals. As
teachers, we must observe and assess each individual student in order to design an integrated lesson
plan that is appropriate, meaningful, and challenging. (GPO2) Evaluation of individual child s
development and learning is essential for planning and implementing appropriate curriculum. Teachers
must continually engaging in observational assessment for the purpose of improving teaching and
learning. Designing integrated lessons lead to positive learning outcomes. By integrating art, music,
dance, and movement in lessons it leads to a positive learning environment because it allows students
to get out of their comfort zone. This can help boost children to be confident and accepting of
themselves and each other. Another plus of integrating the arts into curriculum is that it can allow all
students to learn in a way that may be more favorable to them. Studies have proven that students learn
in multiple ways. These learning styles include; visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. By allowing the arts

The Discovery Of Polio Vaccine Essay
In the early 1900s, scientists and medical personnel did not have an answer to poliomyelitis, otherwise
known as polio. However, a breakthrough was reached when Jonas Salk managed to developed the
first vaccine, which he brought to the public in 1955 after testing the drug on himself, family, and
others. Salk developed a killed virus vaccine through tissue culture methods discovered by the
scientist John Enders. Unfortunately, Salk s vaccine was not the cure that the scientific community,
and the world, had hoped for, as the results of the vaccine took a critical turn for the worse shortly
after release. According to Naomi Rogers, Cutter Laboratories, one of the original mass producers of
Salk s polio vaccine, released many faulty vaccines which resulted in greatly diminishing Salk s
reputation:
Both Salk s and the Foundation s reputations were briefly tarnished by what became termed the Cutter
incident. Within fifteen days of Francis s April 1955 report, the Foundation s worst fears seemed to be
realized when cases of paralysis were reported among children who had received the vaccine. After
federal officials from the Communicable Disease Center established that these cases were the result of
vaccination from a batch prepared by Cutter Laboratories of Berkeley, California, Surgeon General
Leonard Scheele halted the vaccination program for a week. (Rogers 180)
The fears brought upon by the Cutter incident led to the rise of alternative research, in particular that

Summary Of Emma Bovary
Today, women are free to get divorced, become CEOs of public and private companies, and vote. In
19th century France, women s options were severely limited as they did not have equal property or
contract rights as men nor the right to vote. As a result, women had an extremely isolated existence
and marriage was the accepted way to gain wealth and social status . Women were defined by their
husbands and their power was subordinated to their authority. While many women were content with
this trapped life, Emma Bovary is not. She is trapped in a web of ennui: The feeling of mental
weariness and dissatisfaction produced by want of occupation, or lack of interest in present
surroundings or employments. She insists on gaining authority through forbidden relationships with
men outside her marriage, for there is more to life than her uninspired husband. Emma s desire to
write her own life story, resembling those of the novels she read in the convent as a young girl, is her
ultimate destruction as it drives her into an endless cycle of ennui and finally suicide.
Shortly after her marriage, Emma attempts to escape her ennui through writing and the power of
words. When Emma marries Charles Bovary and becomes Madame Bovary, she falls into a life [that]
was cold as a garret facing north, and ennui, the silent spider, was weaving its web in the darkness, in
every corner of her heart (38). Emma s life is as empty, dark, and isolated. Her loneliness surrounds

Things Fall Apart Igbo Culture
Chinua Achebe once said, the world is like a mask dancing...if you want to see it well, you do not
stand in one place, (Goodreads). Renowned for his novel Things Fall Apart, in which he responds to
the stereotypes of the British who conquered the continent of Africa in the era of New Imperialism,
Achebe explores Igbo culture through many aspects of daily village life. Contradicting the racism
employed by whites in the 1890s in order to justify slavery in earlier history, Things Fall Apart offers
a new fresh perspective into the lives of ordinary villagers of the Igbo tribe in Nigeria, before they are
taken over by the British. Just as the whites in Europe, the tribe applies their own religion, customs,
beliefs, and language to their lives. Through this lens the reader is able to extract a deeper meaning of
the powerful message Achebe communicates by penning the famous novel.

One of the first defining characteristics that the reader notices about Okonkwo is his ability to wrestle

The State Based Westphalian System Of Governance
For hundreds of years state sovereignty has allowed for individual states to effectively handle their
problems internally. However, with the current increase of globalism, which Keohane and Nye
describe as a state of the world involving networks of interdependence at multicontinental distances
(75), many of the world s major concerns have moved beyond the level of individual states. This
interdependence has affected economic, military, environmental, as well as social and cultural aspects
of international relations and everyday life. These overlapping processes of globalization have allowed
for a great deal of global progress, but progress is impossible to achieve without occasional setbacks.
The problems we face today are rooted in the contradiction of solving global issues while relying on
the state based Westphalian system of governance. Governance provide[s] a general way to formulate,
implement, monitor and enforce social rules, (Scholte 20) but it is no longer possible to rely on a state
based system, in which states act independently to pursue self interest, to solve international problems,
many of which have been created collectively. State sovereignty and the motivation of power in
political realism continue to neglect the important issues we face with growing global concerns that
can only be solved with an increased cooperation through the strengthening of international
institutions and non state actors. It is necessary to shift from a state based form of

The Divine Comedy Dante By Dante Alighieri
Perfection. Society has been taught to strive for that and normally perfection is accompanied by a
religion that exemplifies it and the reward tends to be unimaginably amazing. The problem is that no
one is perfect, and because there is no way to measure that we try our best or we give up and follow
other paths. Dante Alighieri, born in Florence, Italy in 1265, was born into a very power hungry age.
Morality was not very high on someone s to do list. In the Divine Comedy Dante makes a point of

In short, TQM programs require a change in the organizational philosophy and culture.
3. PURPOSE OF THE INTERVENTION:
The purpose of Total Quality Management is to increase customer satisfaction by improving the
quality of the goods or services offered by the organization. This improvement is centered on the
product or services, and the processes involved in making or delivering the product or service to the
customer. Ultimately the goal of TQM is to make quality the way of doing things within the
organization.
4. EFFECTIVENESS CRITERIA:
In all Total Quality Management programs the ultimate effectiveness criterion is customer satisfaction.
According to the research, to reach this ultimate goal of effectiveness requires that the organization
measure several other criteria on a continual basis (Weaver, 1991; Hackman Wageman, 1995;
Dahlgaard, 1999; Clark, 2000). The appropriate criteria to measure depends on the type of
organization, and whether they deliver a product or a service. In a production based organization, the
effectiveness criteria are divided into product measures and employee measures. The possible
measures for the product include: increases in production, increases in sales, increases in market share,
increases in stock prices, reductions in the product cycle time, reductions in the number of reworks,
reductions in the inventories, and reductions in customer returns. The employee measures include:
satisfaction with the company,

Mirror Neurons In The Brain
Discuss and evaluate the research on mirror neurons and their role in the sensorimotor system and
other cognitive processes?
It has been suggested that within the neural network of the inferior parietal cortex and the prefrontal
cortex residing in the right hemisphere, there is a system that plays a special role in interpersonal
awareness (Decety Sommerville, 2003). In developmental psychology, it is proposed that, because
Theory of mind tasks activates neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex, that self and other
representations are closely interconnected, and that this can help us identify with others (Decety
Sommerville, 2003). In neurological terms, this is part of a biological system which supports our
social interactions from a self ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hickock argues that in one study, only 15% of neurons discharged upon execution and observation of
the same action; the sound of a peanut shell being cracked (Kholer et al., 2002). He states that the
rationale to this is based on the mirror neurons assisting, action understanding; their activity would
demonstrate that they understood the meaning of the observed action. Hicock, (2009) argues against
this as 85% of neurons did not fire. Rizzolatti (2001) himself, states the findings of MNS did not rule
out other possible neurons and brain areas for activation based on biological movement . This leads
Hicock to propose that the alternative explanation may be the Superior temporal sulcus area as
neurons in this area resemble the structure and design of MNS and do respond to some actions.
Hicock adds, however that there is insufficient evidence to conclude this. Hicock,(2009) also argues
that it cannot be assumed that the MNS in monkeys cannot be transferred directly to Humans as it may
not be designed in the same way. He then argues that there is no evidence of action understanding in
monkeys, and thus we cannot assume action understanding in humans. It is noted that Hickoks belief

Conformity In Harraway s Essay On Cyborgs
In most cases, finding the median between two highly contrasting points can be challenging, but it is
not so for Haraway s idea of cyborgs and Twain s idea of conformity. Both concepts are interrelated
because the cyborg is the hybrid of both machine and organism, and conformity, is the center of
standing out and barely noticeable . By applying Mark Twain s idea that conformity is a result of self
approval to Donna Haraway s argument that cyborgs are the ramifications of different political and
economic social systems, we can see that because of Haraway s idea that cyborgs are the balance
between two opposites, the same can be said of conformity in Twain s essay, and so conformity is a
result of different societal states due to the idea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cyborg acts as a metaphor for the postmodernist view of the world as well as the introduction to
new technology. To Haraway, the blend between nature and civilization gives birth to the cyborg, as it
is a hybrid of machine and organism (pg. 1). As part of her argument, the dualistic division between
biology and technology is no longer present because of the cyborg, and she incorporates the idea of
feminism because she is trying to achieve the same sense of balance of distribution of power between
male and female dominants as in cyborg reality. Since the cyborg does not exist in nature or culture,
and because it is a hybrid, its extent is not limited by dualist archetypes. Haraway sees the cyborg as
the illegitimate offspring of militarism and patriarchal capitalism, not to mention state socialism. (pg.
2) She feels as if different social systems have merged nature and civilization together which explains
the reason behind the birth of the cyborg but their origins are irrelevant because the cyborg s existence
is derived from multiple sources and they are often exceedingly unfaithful to their origins. (pg.

The Importance Of Industrial Percolation
fine, fine, and extra fine) [10]. The desired size in percolation in industrial level would be around 1.4
1.5 mm as referred to regular grinding in some text. The particle size will be also considered after
dehydration since it is important for solubility and other aspects.
3. Brewing
Brewing or sometimes referred to as percolation is the infusion of hot water in the ground coffee to
extract the aromatic and organic compounds from the coffee ground at approximately 100 °C and
101.3 kPa. Similar to the coffee maker at home, industrial percolation has larger quantity but also
performed at a slightly higher pressure and temperature sometimes. The reason that higher working
pressure and temperature would be because of the higher efficiency, and higher extraction percentage
of the desired compounds (solid content from 36 46 %). Cold brewing is also available with slightly
higher pressure (17 °C and 338 kPa). Higher yield of solid content could be reached by percolation at
200 °C and 1500 kPa. The latter would be higher capital cost operation, but also effective in extracting
more volatile compounds [11].
a. Aroma recovery
Aroma recovery usually follows the percolation process, where heat exchangers are used to cooling
down the steam coming from the brewing process. It should be mentioned that the target is short
extraction time with low temperature to retain as much as possible of the aromatic and volatile
compounds such as 4 vinyl guaiacol, 4 ethylguaiacol, 2 ethyl 3,

Social Justice In To Kill A Mockingbird
Social Justice, defined by the Oxford Dictionary, is Justice in terms of the distribution of wealth,
opportunities and privileges within a society. The human survival and the progression of society,
heavily relies on the ability to stand up for the rights and freedoms of others being an advocate for
change and an advocate for social justice. This essay with primarily discus Social Justice through
advocacy and younger generations perceptions of the world, focusing on the text To Kill A
Mockingbird by Harper Lee and the pocket film And So It Should Be by Tara Campbell. Overall,
exploring the theme of how social justice is essential to human survival and the progression of society.
The perception in the text To Kill A Mockingbird of hate being a natural emotion is constantly
challenged to provide the side of that hate is taught, rather than natural. The use of Lee s high
modality, use of a metaphor in the quote As you grow older, you ll see white men cheat black men
every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don t you forget it whenever a white man
does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that

  • 2. The Earliest Microscopes and Pond Ecology Essay The earliest microscope magnified the object ten times the actual size. They were made up of a tube with a plate for the object at one end and, at the other, a lens which magnified the object. In 1609, Galileo worked with the lenses and made more advanced instrument with a focusing device. Anton van Leeuwenhoek taught himself methods of polishing tiny lenses of extreme curvature which gave best magnification of that time up to 270 diameters. This led to the building of his microscopes and his discoveries. He was also the first to see and explain yeast plants, bacteria, life in a drop of water, and the circulation of blood corpuscles in capillaries. • 3. Abortion is Murder Essay example The battle over abortion began with the case of Roe versus Wade on January 22, 1973. This conflict has quickly become one of the most predominant matters of society. By analyzing philosophical theories, biological facts, and psychological affects of abortion, one is able to conclude that abortion is murder. Through education and awareness programs, abortion can be acknowledged as immoral and unethical, thus preventing such crimes from being committed. There are many opinions that coincide with the argument about whether or not abortion is murder. A common factor that many people consider when deciding their viewpoint is to determine whether or not they believe unborn children classify as living beings. The first step of this process is to define the meaning of personhood. Pro lifers agree that personhood begins at the moment of conception; however, the majority of those with a pro choice viewpoint would argue that this is not the case. The pro choice population breaks down personhood into three categories: human life, human being, and human person. According to their definitions, a child has human life when he or she develops tissue, and is considered to be a human being once he or she is born. Also according to this system of classification, human person is obtained with the development of personality and feelings. Therefore the common pro life belief is that life begins at the moment of conception, as opposed to the common pro choice belief that conception is merely the forming of a zygote and human personhood develops over time, but not before birth. • 4. The Horror Of The Zombie Apocalypse Daniel Drezner book addresses how the world would potentially react should the Zombie Apocalypse start while relating it to international relations. While discussing the anarchical nature of the world, in the realist argument, he addresses the fact that it is not likely that any one state would be able to gain complete control of the world. However, if the entire world is being overtaken by a zombie plague it is not outside the realm of possibility that survivors of various nations would come together and merge with whatever power still existed and divvy out more power to that group or individual. A good old fashioned military takeover would be just the thing to create an uneasy world wide alliance with other militaristic organizations across the world against the zombie hordes. The military would easily be able to take charge in a global catastrophe of this nature relatively quickly and with little resistance from the common people. They are one of the most disciplined and structured organizations in regards to bureaucracy and other political organizations, and would not hesitate to change the protocols of war against an end of the world type of threat such as a zombie takeover. Also, military tradition and codes of conduct cross borders with significantly more similarities than do political ideologies and governmental structures, which would result in there being a much easier and more unified alliance than could ever be achieved in any other global unification setting. ... An iconic image of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, it depicts Ruby Bridges, a six year old African American girl, on her way into an all white public school in New Orleans on November 14, 1960 during the process of racial desegregation. The little girl in the painting titled The Problem We All Live With is walking to school in a white dress, white socks and white shoes. Her hair is parted in neat plaits and she is carrying a book and a ruler. • 6. Analysis Of Dream Deferred By Langston Hughes Dream deferred The poem I will discuss today is Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes it is located on page 620 of the textbook. The theme of this poem is postponing your dreams can lead to destruction in your life. The tone of this poem is uncertainty. The author is very uncertain of what happens to a dream deferred. The two elements of figurative language the author used in this poem to convey the theme are simile and metaphor. The first element of figurative language I will discuss is simile. A simile is when you compare two unlike things using like or as. This is shown multiply times throughout the poem for example it says, Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun. The author is comparing a dream deferred to a dried up raisin a raisin is already dry but if left out in the sun it becomes hard to eat which mean it loses it nutritional purpose. ... Another example of a simile used in the poem was Or fester like a sore and then run? • 7. The Importance Of St. Bernard Of Clairvaux Proverbs 5:23 says, For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly (NIV). This statement does not only seem to be the foundation of St. Bernard s teachings, but it is also provides a glimpse to a life without Christian mysticism. St. Bernard of Clairvaux lived from 1090 1153 AD and lived as a Cistercian abbot, acting as the mouthpiece for Christian mysticism during the Middle Ages. Mysticism is defined, The spiritual discipline that enables an individual to experience union with God or a divine principle (Quinn). Throughout St. Bernard s letters and teachings, he wanted the reader to grasp the meaning and necessary steps to have an established relationship with Christ. St. Bernard of Clairvaux was a mediator for Christian Mysticism because his teachings reflected mysticism s values of discipline, obedience, and selflessness. St. Bernard stressed the importance of discipline, as it is not only beneficial for someone to strengthen their relationship with Christ, but it is necessary for someone to discipline themselves in order to draw closer to Christ. St. Bernard says in Some Letters of Saint Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux, Thus I have determined to follow him as master always and everywhere, but on the condition never to deviate from the authority of the Rule, which, as he himself is witness, I have sworn and determined to keep (St. Bernard). I was born in the 90 s, where most of the children didn t have a cellphone, instead they had bicycles, dirt and not stress at all. There were good times back then. Today we have smart phones, laptops, tablets, and of course we have Netflix, a global provider of streaming movies and TV series. I have to mention that there is one TV show in particular that has captivated my eyes, its name; The Walking Dead . Maybe the title of this American horror drama television series sounds a little mysterious and scary, first of all, because the serious shows a world overrun by zombies, but besides that, I have learned a lot from this TV show. One of the first things that I want to mention is that I like this TV show not because it has a lot of suspense and special effects, but for the way it can easily be related to this world. The Walking Dead is about a sheriff who awakens from a long comma to confront a new world full of zombies that he never could imagine he would live. He reunites with his family and becomes the leader of a group he forms with other survivors. Together they struggle to survive in and adapt to a world filled with zombies and some humans who are even more dangerous than the zombies themselves, but, why I relate this series with our world? In traditional Africa each child has a place and is welcome in the community. The act of parenting another child was not odd because every adult that lived in each community believed that any child is welcome in anyone s home. This, however, is not the case for Pecola. Some historians refer to the imperialist period as the Great Aberration , the turning point in foreign policy. It was considered before this period the Americans were isolationists. The Spanish American War in 1898 was a clear representation of an expansionist foreign policy. The main motive behind the conflict was the explosion of the USS Maine, which was blamed on the Spanish despite there being evidence of it being caused by an internal fault. For instance, the Americans looked to expand into the east in the 1890s to access raw materials and to export over produced goods to help the American economy. The annexation of Hawaii on July 7, 1898, was an effort to create a stronger economy because it was considered the crossroads to the Pacific so by annexing Hawaii the, the Americans were able to gain access to other countries such as the Philippines which they purchased for 20 million dollars displaying motives of expansion. In 1901 when the Filipinos wanted independence the US refused which led to the killing of 50,000 to 200,000 Filipinos in a war between the Philippines and the USA which suggests that the motive for the war in the Philippines was to keep their economic influence and to show the great military power of the US. Throughout the work, Poe employs a seemingly simple ebony clock to symbolize the destined time of life, which no one can control. The clock is first introduced by describing the pendulum s dull, heavy, monotonous clang , which automatically gives the idea that the clock is oppressive and evokes fear in both the readers and guests (Poe). This is a problem that desperately needs help. In Boston, they have what is called Housing First. This is an organization that goes out to the homeless communities, finds them apartments, helps them to get a job and provides a way for them to get their life back on track. In Columbus, we need to start something similar called Community First. Homeless People are constantly blamed themselves for their situation, but often times it has nothing to do with anything they have done. People can become homeless in a number of ways. • 26. My Favorite Leisure Experiences In My Life Throughout my life my leisure activities have changed many times. From playing video games; to sports and hanging out with friends. Out of my many favorite leisure experiences my most favorite would be hanging out with friends. Being with other people and having fun is one of the best feelings to me because it takes off all the stress of my life difficulties. It is very important to reflect on one s past and present leisure experiences because they reminds of the best and most fun memorable moments in our lives. We live in a very stressful society where we hardly have any fun time due to work, school, or just our very busy lives. During stressful times or difficult times reflecting on those memorable moments has a very positive impact on us. As I have grown older I have definitely experienced many of the levels of Nash s Paradigm of Free Time. When I was in middle school I participated in activities that would be classified as acts performed against society on Nash s Paradigm. At the time I was about 14 years old and did not think thoroughly about my actions. I used to participate in shoplifting and vandalism as my leisure activities. Me and my friends would hang out after school and tag the walls around our school and would go into stores to steal snacks or drinks. At the time I did not realise how irresponsible and idiotic my actions were. At first when I began to tag it had a bad psychological effect on me because I would be paranoid I was going to get caught by the cops or someone of authority. The more I did it the less paranoid I felt but never felt completely safe and always had a negative psychological effect. Tagging the walls was a way to express how I felt at the time. I felt I had to represent my crew which i was involved with. Participating in these activities did have a physical effect because most of the time I did a lot of running. Whenever someone would catch us we had to run away as fast as we could and it would get us tired. It did make me feel good the running had a good effect on my body as it slimed me down a bit. This was a very social activity. Sometimes we would walk around in groups of 10 15 guys just messing around and having fun. I did build a lot of friendships at the time by ... Evaluation Of An Integrated Lesson Plan Through the lesson plans that we developed, I ve learned how to implement art that is developmentally appropriate, meaningful, and challenging for students. The integration of art must be meaningful to the lesson but also challenging for the students. The integrated lesson plan must also consider a diverse classroom, allowing all students equal access to what is being taught. Most importantly, art experiences must help each child meet challenging and achievable learning goals. As teachers, we must observe and assess each individual student in order to design an integrated lesson plan that is appropriate, meaningful, and challenging. (GPO2) Evaluation of individual child s development and learning is essential for planning and implementing appropriate curriculum. Teachers must continually engaging in observational assessment for the purpose of improving teaching and learning. Designing integrated lessons lead to positive learning outcomes. By integrating art, music, dance, and movement in lessons it leads to a positive learning environment because it allows students to get out of their comfort zone. This can help boost children to be confident and accepting of themselves and each other. Another plus of integrating the arts into curriculum is that it can allow all students to learn in a way that may be more favorable to them. Studies have proven that students learn in multiple ways. • 28. The Discovery Of Polio Vaccine Essay In the early 1900s, scientists and medical personnel did not have an answer to poliomyelitis, otherwise known as polio. However, a breakthrough was reached when Jonas Salk managed to developed the first vaccine, which he brought to the public in 1955 after testing the drug on himself, family, and others. Salk developed a killed virus vaccine through tissue culture methods discovered by the scientist John Enders. Unfortunately, Salk s vaccine was not the cure that the scientific community, and the world, had hoped for, as the results of the vaccine took a critical turn for the worse shortly after release. According to Naomi Rogers, Cutter Laboratories, one of the original mass producers of Salk s polio vaccine, released many faulty vaccines which resulted in greatly diminishing Salk s reputation: Both Salk s and the Foundation s reputations were briefly tarnished by what became termed the Cutter incident. Within fifteen days of Francis s April 1955 report, the Foundation s worst fears seemed to be realized when cases of paralysis were reported among children who had received the vaccine. After federal officials from the Communicable Disease Center established that these cases were the result of vaccination from a batch prepared by Cutter Laboratories of Berkeley, California, Surgeon General Leonard Scheele halted the vaccination program for a week. (Rogers 180) The fears brought upon by the Cutter incident led to the rise of alternative research, in particular that of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Summary Of Emma Bovary Today, women are free to get divorced, become CEOs of public and private companies, and vote. In 19th century France, women s options were severely limited as they did not have equal property or contract rights as men nor the right to vote. As a result, women had an extremely isolated existence and marriage was the accepted way to gain wealth and social status . Women were defined by their husbands and their power was subordinated to their authority. While many women were content with this trapped life, Emma Bovary is not. She is trapped in a web of ennui: The feeling of mental weariness and dissatisfaction produced by want of occupation, or lack of interest in present surroundings or employments. She insists on gaining authority through forbidden relationships with men outside her marriage, for there is more to life than her uninspired husband. Emma s desire to write her own life story, resembling those of the novels she read in the convent as a young girl, is her ultimate destruction as it drives her into an endless cycle of ennui and finally suicide. Shortly after her marriage, Emma attempts to escape her ennui through writing and the power of words. When Emma marries Charles Bovary and becomes Madame Bovary, she falls into a life [that] was cold as a garret facing north, and ennui, the silent spider, was weaving its web in the darkness, in every corner of her heart (38). Renowned for his novel Things Fall Apart, in which he responds to the stereotypes of the British who conquered the continent of Africa in the era of New Imperialism, Achebe explores Igbo culture through many aspects of daily village life. Contradicting the racism employed by whites in the 1890s in order to justify slavery in earlier history, Things Fall Apart offers a new fresh perspective into the lives of ordinary villagers of the Igbo tribe in Nigeria, before they are taken over by the British. Just as the whites in Europe, the tribe applies their own religion, customs, beliefs, and language to their lives. • 34. The State Based Westphalian System Of Governance For hundreds of years state sovereignty has allowed for individual states to effectively handle their problems internally. However, with the current increase of globalism, which Keohane and Nye describe as a state of the world involving networks of interdependence at multicontinental distances (75), many of the world s major concerns have moved beyond the level of individual states. This interdependence has affected economic, military, environmental, as well as social and cultural aspects of international relations and everyday life. These overlapping processes of globalization have allowed for a great deal of global progress, but progress is impossible to achieve without occasional setbacks. The problems we face today are rooted in the contradiction of solving global issues while relying on the state based Westphalian system of governance. Governance provide[s] a general way to formulate, implement, monitor and enforce social rules, (Scholte 20) but it is no longer possible to rely on a state based system, in which states act independently to pursue self interest, to solve international problems, many of which have been created collectively. Ultimately the goal of TQM is to make quality the way of doing things within the organization. 4. EFFECTIVENESS CRITERIA: In all Total Quality Management programs the ultimate effectiveness criterion is customer satisfaction. According to the research, to reach this ultimate goal of effectiveness requires that the organization measure several other criteria on a continual basis (Weaver, 1991; Hackman Wageman, 1995; Dahlgaard, 1999; Clark, 2000). The appropriate criteria to measure depends on the type of organization, and whether they deliver a product or a service. In a production based organization, the effectiveness criteria are divided into product measures and employee measures. It has been suggested that within the neural network of the inferior parietal cortex and the prefrontal cortex residing in the right hemisphere, there is a system that plays a special role in interpersonal awareness (Decety Sommerville, 2003). In developmental psychology, it is proposed that, because Theory of mind tasks activates neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex, that self and other representations are closely interconnected, and that this can help us identify with others (Decety Sommerville, 2003). Hickock argues that in one study, only 15% of neurons discharged upon execution and observation of the same action; the sound of a peanut shell being cracked (Kholer et al., 2002). He states that the rationale to this is based on the mirror neurons assisting, action understanding; their activity would demonstrate that they understood the meaning of the observed action. Hicock, (2009) argues against this as 85% of neurons did not fire. Rizzolatti (2001) himself, states the findings of MNS did not rule out other possible neurons and brain areas for activation based on biological movement . This leads Hicock to propose that the alternative explanation may be the Superior temporal sulcus area as neurons in this area resemble the structure and design of MNS and do respond to some actions. Hicock adds, however that there is insufficient evidence to conclude this. Hicock,(2009) also argues that it cannot be assumed that the MNS in monkeys cannot be transferred directly to Humans as it may not be designed in the same way. He then argues that there is no evidence of action understanding in monkeys, and thus we cannot assume action understanding in humans. It is noted that Hickoks belief that ... Conformity In Harraway s Essay On Cyborgs In most cases, finding the median between two highly contrasting points can be challenging, but it is not so for Haraway s idea of cyborgs and Twain s idea of conformity. Both concepts are interrelated because the cyborg is the hybrid of both machine and organism, and conformity, is the center of standing out and barely noticeable . By applying Mark Twain s idea that conformity is a result of self approval to Donna Haraway s argument that cyborgs are the ramifications of different political and economic social systems, we can see that because of Haraway s idea that cyborgs are the balance between two opposites, the same can be said of conformity in Twain s essay, and so conformity is a result of different societal states due to the idea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cyborg acts as a metaphor for the postmodernist view of the world as well as the introduction to new technology. To Haraway, the blend between nature and civilization gives birth to the cyborg, as it is a hybrid of machine and organism (pg. 1). As part of her argument, the dualistic division between biology and technology is no longer present because of the cyborg, and she incorporates the idea of feminism because she is trying to achieve the same sense of balance of distribution of power between male and female dominants as in cyborg reality. Since the cyborg does not exist in nature or culture, and because it is a hybrid, its extent is not limited by dualist archetypes. Haraway sees the cyborg as the illegitimate offspring of militarism and patriarchal capitalism, not to mention state socialism. (pg. 2) She feels as if different social systems have merged nature and civilization together which explains the reason behind the birth of the cyborg but their origins are irrelevant because the cyborg s existence is derived from multiple sources and they are often exceedingly unfaithful to their origins. The desired size in percolation in industrial level would be around 1.4 1.5 mm as referred to regular grinding in some text. The particle size will be also considered after dehydration since it is important for solubility and other aspects. 3. Brewing Brewing or sometimes referred to as percolation is the infusion of hot water in the ground coffee to extract the aromatic and organic compounds from the coffee ground at approximately 100 °C and 101.3 kPa. Similar to the coffee maker at home, industrial percolation has larger quantity but also performed at a slightly higher pressure and temperature sometimes. The reason that higher working pressure and temperature would be because of the higher efficiency, and higher extraction percentage of the desired compounds (solid content from 36 46 %). Cold brewing is also available with slightly higher pressure (17 °C and 338 kPa). Higher yield of solid content could be reached by percolation at 200 °C and 1500 kPa. The latter would be higher capital cost operation, but also effective in extracting more volatile compounds [11]. a. Aroma recovery Aroma recovery usually follows the percolation process, where heat exchangers are used to cooling down the steam coming from the brewing process. • 42. Social Justice In To Kill A Mockingbird Social Justice, defined by the Oxford Dictionary, is Justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities and privileges within a society. The human survival and the progression of society, heavily relies on the ability to stand up for the rights and freedoms of others being an advocate for change and an advocate for social justice. This essay with primarily discus Social Justice through advocacy and younger generations perceptions of the world, focusing on the text To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and the pocket film And So It Should Be by Tara Campbell. Overall, exploring the theme of how social justice is essential to human survival and the progression of society. The perception in the text To Kill A Mockingbird of hate being a natural emotion is constantly challenged to provide the side of that hate is taught, rather than natural. The use of Lee s high modality, use of a metaphor in the quote As you grow older, you ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don t you forget it whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash , explores this notion. This quote breaks the stigma of that, the majority, in this particular text the white society, are always considered to be the higher class and able to get away with whatever they please just because of their race being considered better than another. At the point in the text, Atticus stands up for what is right, not what is expected of him to blame and judge Tom Radley, as the rest of the town does. It sets him aside from others and causes people to step back from themselves and their beliefs for a moment, to challenge whether they are biased opinions and actions on a topic. Harper uses this moment to bring into the spotlight how actions may not change, and social injustice may still occur however, the person/ people causing it need to be called out for it. This evidently displays the progression of society through social justice. In addition to this, the idea is discussed further in the pocket film And So It Should Be composed by Tara Campbell.
