- 2. Vision Work with a partner. Try to recall the film’s setting and/or situation and describe it based on how you recall it.
- 5. Concept Catcher Points to Remember: 1. Where you place your character is essential to how they will live and go on with their lives. 2. What situation you put them in is crucial in determining the outcome of your whole story. MILIEU - places your characters in a particular physical space/s and puts your characters in situation that provides the social context of your story.
- 6. 2 levels of MILIEU 1. Exterior Component Consists of the physical environment or the setting your character is found in: where he/she lives, how it looks, the time/year and the LOCAL ATTRIBUTES of that environment.
- 7. 2. INTERIOR COMPONENT it consists of the ambience or atmosphere of the environment. It provides the social context and emotional element of the character’s environment which includes: origin/history of the place (if applicable, political climate, social condition, economic state, cultural dimension, etc.)
- 8. The interior component of milieu connects your character and the environment. It gives the character a reason to respond to something and through that reaction, something is discovered or learned about the character.
- 9. Guide Questions to help situate your character better in his/her Milieu 1. Where is s/he found? What is the time period? 2. What unique characteristic/s does the environment have such that the character can locate himself/herself there? 3. What is the factor that links your character and environment? Does it have something to do with his/her past? To his/her loved ones?
- 10. 4. How is the character related or connected to his/her environment? To his/her job? Through tradition? To a superstitious belief? To cultural nuances? 5. How is the character situated in the environment? Is s/he an outcast? A hero of the community? A common person who just blends in his/her environment? - 12. Brainstorm Character-Milieu Mix and Match You will need the following: Movie and travel magazines Your journal Scissors paste/glue coloring materials
- 13. BRAINSTORM 1. Select one character from a film that you like best. 2. Select a place that your chosen film character has never been to. You may even put a specific character in another film. In short, simulate a new milieu for your character. 3. Make cut-outs from magazine to represent your character in his/her new milieu and paste them on your journal.
- 14. 4. The character you selected is now in another world outside the world s/he knows. What do you think will happen? 5. Write a brief scene description of what you think will happen to the character? How will s/he react? How will the people around him/her react? If the character stays in that “new world”, do you think s/he will like it there? Will s/he survive? How?
- 15. Learning Activity Identify one place in the metropolis that is very familiar to you and another place that is very unfamiliar to you. Try to rediscover the familiar place by exploring it once again and familiarize yourself in the other place by visiting it. Submit a site feature or a reflection paper about the places you discovered or rediscovered.
- 16. Guidelines for Evaluating the Milieu 1. Is the milieu communicated clearly to you? 2. Are the elements found in the milieu consistent with the character’s behavior or action? 3. Is the relationship of character and milieu established and clear? 4. Do you see the milieu reflected in the character’s behaviors and actions? 5. If you remove the character from the milieu, will s/he stand out? How?
