2. Criminal Trial Observation
Assignment 3
The Court: 19th Judicial Circuit Court of Cole County MO
Court Address: 301 E High St Jefferson City Mo 65101
Court Telephone: (573) 634 9150
Date of Court Visit: September 21, 2015
Name of Case: State of Missouri v. Steidley
Subject of case: (retrial) 2nd degree arson
I went to the Cole County Courthouse to observe a criminal jury trial that involved a
retrial for second degree arson. I was able to be a part of the jury selection
proceedings. I witnessed what kinds of questions that are asked of the potential
jurors and to see how people respond or act when they are put on the spot about
their personal beliefs about certain things. This was a very interesting proceeding for
me as I have never been selected for jury ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He asked the jurors if they had any kind of personal feelings about arson or any
kind of experience that involved arson that would hinder them from making a fair
decision. He too asked about the possible witnesses that may be called to see if
anyone knew them and if so how. The defendant, Kurt Steidley, was there to watch
the proceedings and was sitting with his team. Once all the questions were over, the
jury was dismissed out in to the hall and final selections were made. The bailiff came
out a while later and read the names of those chosen and informed them they would
need to return the next morning for opening agreements at 9am.
My opinion on this specific case is still unknown to me. It is a retrial because of a
testimony given by the interim Jefferson City Fire Chief Jason Turner that was not
disclosed by the prosecution. The judge advised the jurors to strike the testimony but
the defense argued that they felt the defendant had the right to understand and
believe, that the testimony would not come back to the trail. I have a hard time with
something like this because of all the time and money spent just to be thrown away
and have to start all over. I understand the right to a fair trial but it just seems to me
that with all the evidence and testimony given, the correct verdict was given. I have
to wonder if the verdict would have been different, would the prosecution request a
3. American Pie, by Don McLean Essay
Analysis of the song American Pie , by Don McLean
The song American Pie , by Don McLean, was a major rock and roll hit in 1971.
McLean portrays famous rock and roll singer and songwriter Buddy Holly, who died
in a plane crash in 1961 by using many rhetorical strategies. The different possible
interpretations of this song made it one of the most controversial songs from the
1970 s.
Don McLean was a famous singer/songwriter who was popular in the 1970 s. His
music is mostly classified into rock and roll. The audience of this song can be
anyone. The majority of the people listening to the song in the 1970 s were hippies, or
people who had open minds. The purpose of this song is not just to entertain people
with beautiful music, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The address to the term, Miss American Pie references a plane that went down
killing singer Buddy Holly. The line, The quartet practiced in the park, refers to the
famous pop group Beatles who became famous shortly after the death of Holly. All
of the other symbolism in this song revolves events that happened around that time
of Holly s death. McLean uses informal irony in the tone of the song to convey this
deep symbolism. Because of the depth, there is a big controversy on what some of
the words represent. Some people even think Miss American Pie represents the civil
rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.. One example of McLean s use of irony is in
the story about Holly. The irony comes from how he describes when Holly was
younger, he borrowed a coat from James Dean, and then many years later he was a
famous singer. McLean uses a subjective point of view as he uses his interpretations,
comments, and judgments to appeal to pathos in this song.
McLean uses only two of the rhetorical appeals. Ethos is used when he describes
the other singers most people know about. And while Lenin read a book on Marx,
emphasizes ethos because Lenin was a famous singer who people respect. Pathos
was used throughout the whole piece especially when he said the lovers cried and
the poets screamed. This quote describes the people s sadness towards the death of
Holly, which appeals to the listener in many emotional ways. He also uses
4. Monsters Are Due On Maple Street Essay
Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts... (John Steinbeck, brainyquote.com) Fear
greatly corrupts the peace and civility in a town in the Twilight Zone. The Twilight
Zone is a TV show from the 1960s, composed of separate short stories. This is a very
unique show that touches on the fatal flaws of all humans, where most shows
exaggerate the admirable characteristics of humans. In The Twilight Zone, there is a
short story called, Monsters Are Due On Maple Street, by Rod Serling, where
characters continuously search for a scapegoat, led by suspicion and fear. In, Monsters
Are Due On Maple Street, the author discusses the evil weapons of humanity,
including scapegoatingand suspicion. These two weapons of humanity lead to the
destruction of civility on Maple Street, as neighbors turn on one another. Suspicion
is one of the dangerous weapons of humanity. In this scene, a peculiar meteor like
object flew over Maple Street, causing all of the power to go out. A young boy,
Tommy, presents the idea that aliens are behind this. They sent four people...who
looked just like humans... but they weren t. There s a quiet laughter at this...that
comes from a desperate attempt to lighten the atmosphere. The neighbors look at
one another...concerned, (Serling, pg. 5,6). This quote shows that the crowd is
starting to become suspicious of one another. The crowd is panicked and willing
to believe anything, even though there is no proof saying that someone is an alien.
Tommy declares that one of the families that live on Maple Street are aliens. The
crowd now believes that someone isn t who they say they are, just because a young
boy decided that that was the only logical explanation. The suspicion is shattering
the neighbors trust in each other. This may cause neighbors to turn on each other. In
this scene, one of the neighbors, Les Goodman, tries to start his car, because no one
else s cars are working. He stops suddenly as behind him...the car engine starts up all
by itself...The crowd...continues to ask questions in an air of accusation, (Serling,
pg. 6,7). These stage directions show that when Les s car starts, the crowd becomes
immediately suspicious of Les. The crowd becomes
5. The Maze Runner Analysis
The movie the Maze Runner is a movie based on the book Maze Runner by James
Dashner (book by this author is the maze runner series, the mortality doctrine
series, the thirteenth reality series). The movie starts off with A young boy who
wakes up panicking, in a small metal box the young boy appears,he did not
remember how he got there or even who he is. His name is Thomas , but he does
not know his name in the beginning (though in the book his name is the only thing
that he remembers about himself) he ends up remembering it when he gets into a
fight with Gally another character from the movie/book. After had time to adjust
to his new life in the glade. Thomas was the newest arrival to The Glade, a grassy
remote place populated exclusively by teenage boys, all ripped suddenly from
lives they can t remember. Surrounding their new home is an enormous, shifting
maze; each morning, runners go out in the maze, mapping its architecture and
searching for a way out. Those who don t come back before sundown, when the
entrance to the maze closes, are never seen or heard from again but later on we see
that for the first time Thomas and Minho come back alive somehow . Later on a
girl who was in the same condition as Thomas comes in with a test tube and a note
saying that the caretakers will not supply them anymore. The boys are very confused
because it s the first time they see a girl go into the glades. The character Gally
blames everything bad that s happening to them on Thomas.

Compare and contrast the poems Anthem for Doomed Youth by Wilfred
Owen and The Soldier by Rupert Brooke. What are the poets attitudes towards war
and how do they convey these attitudes?
Wilfred Owen s Anthem for Doomed Youth and Rupert Brooke s The
Soldier express opposing views towards war and matters related to it.
Owen condemns war as the cause of immense and painful loss of youths, killed
like animals. He also attacks the church, generally held to preserve human life and
dignity, implying it is powerless and irrelevant in a war situation. Brooke expresses
ready acceptance (his view is meant to be the general view) of possible death on his
country s behalf in grateful return to her for having bore, shaped and made ... Show

If Brooke had mentioned materialistic things like special rights, possession or power
then it gives rise to the thought that his gratitude is questionable, because he has
enjoyed privileges denied to others.
In the second stanza, Brooke whole heartedly declares that he will return to
England what he has been given. In his poem, Brooke doesn t criticise war or
religion but emphasises whole hearted readiness to return to England what he has
been given. The spiritual being created and enriched by England is returned
gratefully. Brooke doesn t mention anything about the horrors of war. Even death is
not presented as something repulsive or of a loss but instead as a repayment to his
country. He feels indebted to England and is completely happy to settle his debt. He
will return to England what she gave him his
dust and delightful thoughts .
Brooke s poem has a confident tone of quiet conviction. The whole poem sounds
proud and dignified. Much of the time Brooke just praises
England and this makes the poem seem cheerful even. The first four lines of his
poem are very patriotic If I should die, think only this of me In that rich earth a
richer dust concealed . Brooke says these lines in a quiet confident manner. The tone
lightens from then, as he describes pleasant things like flowers , love and rivers . The
beginning of the second stanza repeats the first line, and continues with a calm
statement of returning England s

I believe Nike will be a strong performer. This is partly due to the fact that it is a
brand that is currently in high demand as a result of a consumer trend towards
active lifestyles and activities. In addition, I feel like the innovation and design that
goes into Nike products is hard to beat and thus hard to replace. As long as Nike
keeps its consume s needs in mind, I believe it will be a very prosperous company.
While non investors may not be too familiar with Proctor Gamble (PG) they have
probably heard of one of its many subsidiaries which include Pantene, Old Spice,

competes in the consumer products retail industry. Since its founding in Cincinnati,
Ohio in 1837, the company has grown tremendously and today it operates around
the globe. Putting aside unexpected laws and regulation both at home and abroad,
things look good for P G. Since the company produces consumer products that are
used by a variety of people regardless of culture and origin, sales should remain
relatively stable, despite the overall decline in the retail sector. In addition, current

Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the most common cause of antibiotic
associated diarrhea (AAD). Rapid diagnosis of CDI is essential to prevent hospital
spread of infection. The aims were to determine the prevalence of CDI among
cases of AAD in Zagazig University Hospitals, identify risk factors, and evaluate
real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzyme immunoassay (EIA),
against toxigenic culture (TC). Stools were collected from 150 patients with
AAD. They were tested for TC, toxin A/B EIA, and C. difficile tcdA/tcdB genes.
Thirty four toxigenic C. difficile isolates were obtained (22.7%) out of the 150
patients and those patients were considered positive for CDI. On the other hand, 6
non toxigenic C. difficile isolates were obtained (4%), while culture of the
remaining 110 patients (73.3%) did not yield C. difficile. The later 116 patients
(77.3%) were considered negative for CDI. Analysis of risk factors revealed that
advanced age, prolonged hospitalization, long duration of antibiotic intake,
potentiated penicillins, 3rd generation cephalosporins, antibiotic combined therapy,
liver cirrhosis, malignancy, proton pump inhibitors, enteral tube feeding, and cancer
chemotherapy were significantly associated with CDI. Sensitivitiy, specificitiy,
positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of real time PCR
against TC were all 100%, however, values of EIA were 79.4%, 100%, 100%, 94.3%,

Introduction:
There had been a rule in Australian legal history which demanded a lower standard
of care for inexperienced drivers after the case Cook vs. Cook. However, this
anomaly of variable standard of care to reflect the relationship between inexperience
drivers, driving in supervision of experienced drivers was overruled by Australian
High Court after the case of Imbree vs. McNeilly.
Facts of the case:
Paul Imbree, the plaintiff , a supervising licensed driver has suffered a serious injury
in a road accident in Northern Territory due to the negligenceand breach of duty of
care by Jesse McNeilly aged 16 years 5 months old, the first defendant, and an
inexperienced driver not possessing any driver/ learner s permit.
At the time of the accident, Jesse was driving the car owned and registered in the
name of Qantas Airways Ltd, the 2nd defendant at the invitation and supervision of
Imbree on Larapinta Drive, between Kings Canyon and Hermann burg in April
2002. Imbree was allowed to use the car for his personal use.

15. Energy Notes On Energy Losses
Energy losses in pipe
Introduction
The fluid flow is subjected to energy losses as it moves through pipes, particularly
via friction. An indication of energy loss is in the form of a head loss or pressure
drop. The task at hand will be to investigate the variation of head loss at different
velocities through a 17.2mm diameter and 4.5mm diameter pipe. The results will
then be used to derive the Reynolds numbers for each velocity and then compared
the variation of friction factor. From the results we will be able to gain an insight
into the different types of flow and observe the region of transition as a fluid changes
flow type from laminar to turbulent flow. The result calculations will consist of both
experimental and theoretical results, this will help us to understand better the impact
of errors. A comparison will then be made of the Friction factor to Reynolds number
ratio for both experimental and theoretical results. Aim and objective
Aim
To gain an insight into the nature of fluid flow in pipes and relationships for

18. The Effect Of Temperature On Anaerobic Fermentation
Effects of Temperature on Anaerobic Fermentation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Abstract For the experiment, the changes of temperature on anaerobic fermentation
the process in which cells undergo respiration without oxygen in Saccharomyces
cerevisiae was observed. The purpose of this experiment was to test the effect of four
different temperatures on the rate of carbon dioxide production in yeast by measuring
the fermentation rate. Saccharomyces cereviviae, also known as Baker s yeast, is a
unicellular, eukaryotic sac fungus and is good for this experiment because of its
characteristic of alcohol fermentation. It was hypothesized that fermentation increases
with increased temperature to a point of 37В°C; above that point, enzyme denaturing
will occur and fermentation will decrease. The group was able to document the
carbon dioxide production and mark each of the temperature intervals which were
tested at temperatures 4В°C (refrigerator temperature), 23В°C (Room temperature),
37В°C (Human body temperature) and 65В° Celsius (Equal to 150В°F). The
experiment was conducted by pouring yeast solution with 2% glucose in fermentation
tubes, placing the tubes in the appropriate incubation temperature, marking the rise of
the gas bubbles in the fermentation tubes which indicated carbon dioxide production.
The results of this experiment were not supported by the hypothesis, creating
different results from what was predicted. It is important to understand the
fermentation rate of yeast so

Unfortunately there is not cure for Tay Sachs disease nor a sure way to prevent it, but

22. Literary Analysis Of Blackberry Picking By Seamus Heaney
For many, it s difficult to stop greed once the first promise of satisfaction is made.
Blackberry Picking follows the journey of pickers who, upon finding the first sweet
fruit, become enraptured in their greed even as signs point to the inevitable rotting of
all they ve found. Through Blackberry Picking, Seamus Heaney criticizes humankind
s tendency to become overwhelmed with desire even though it always results in
disappointment. The narrator is immediately consumed by his first taste of desire. Its
sweet flesh leaves stains upon the tongue and lust for picking (5,7). The vivid,
sexually charged imagery of the first taste illustrates the seductive nature of desire;
the narrator is irrevocably tainted by his first sampling of the... Show more content on

Though the poem focuses heavily on the speaker s attempts to satisfy his desire,
no greater purpose appears to lie at the end of his quest. The plate of eyes that
burned suggests that the speaker feels like he s being watched, as if someone is
standing and judging him for his thirst. The word burned implies that the feeling of
being observed left a painful impression on him. The pickers leave the field with
hands peppered with thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard s (16). The choice
of a comparison to Bluebeard, the violent murderer from a fairytale, suggests that the
speakers links his desire with a violent, destructive act, further illustrating the way lust
and desire is tangled up with guilt. Those who desire as the pickers do are haunted
and tormented by the fruitlessness of their efforts. Furthermore, the poem is
structured such that, for the most part, the ends of the lines do not quite rhyme. The
almost rhymes throughout the poem mirror the disappoint the speakers feels; lines
that come close to rhyming are just short of satisfying to read, similar to how the
pickers quest does not quite fulfill their desire. By interweaving pain and
disappointment with the blackberry picking process, the author suggests that with
excess greed and desire comes pain and suffering. The pickers know, at least
subconsciously, that their trek through the fields has neither an end goal nor a

In the late 1800 s the Americans viciously forced many Native Americans off their
lands all because the federal government wanted the U.S. to expand and obtain
Manifest Destiny. The main Native American and tribe that stood against the federal
government was Sitting Bull, Chief of the Sioux and entire Lakota nation. He led a
large amount of Siouxwarriors in many battles against the American government that
were fought over the rights and lands of the Lakota nation. He was against the
American government and the forceful ways that they took over Indian lands, and

Even though the camp had surrendered Colonel Harney went back into the camp

26. Negative and Positive Effects of Prohibition in Canada
During the years of 1918 1920 Canada had a brief moment of prohibition. During
this period in time drinking alcohol was considered illegal. As a result many
negative and positive side effects had taken place in the country. Although the ban
of alcohol may have been able to do great good on Canada, the people s reaction to
it completely flipped it around. Although it may have been overall a disastrous idea;
Canada still managed to benefit from prohibition just like the United States (maybe
even more). Although our Country may have benefitted greatly from the
illegalization of alcohol, Canada still became a lot darker. Organized crime and
bootlegging became a lot bigger since people wanted to keep drinking regardless of

So instead of resorting to crime or finding another job they decided to travel to a
different country and continue what they were doing before without a care in the

the Bartenders came back after prohibition. In a way these people helped unify
many Countries and help build a healthy relationship between them. Also during
prohibition car racing became famous since many people had to upgrade their cars
to evade the police as they went about selling illegal narcotics. Not many people
know how this evolved into the great sport of car racing but it just did. Prohibition
although disastrous and unpredictable did do North America one great favor. Because
of all the failures and disasters caused by prohibition many people lost respect

by asking other members of the group for a decision they tend to think of different

a.I have not had any casual sex relationships, so I cannot personally answer this
question for myself. I don t think I would be a proponent of causal sex because I
think sex is something very intimate shared between two people. Furthermore, I
think it is way too risky. One never knows what people might have in terms of STI

different situation with a friends with benefits situation though considering you
would be more familiar with them. However, I do not think I could be in a friends

hooking up in the first place and not in a relationship. No, there is not a limit to the
number of casual sexual partners my spouse had in the past. However, it would make
me feel uncomfortable if they did so without protecting themselves at any point
because they would then be putting me at risk of
29. Analysis Of Toni Cade Bambara s The Lesson
In The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara, the narrator is Sylvia. She is a young
African American girl who has the capacity to see the truth in the reality around her.
Her point of view explores the issues that minorities face every day. In the way she
thinks, speaks, and feel in situations. Sylvia is able to present a broad view regarding
her community; the lack of proper education, the need for involved parents, and the
inequality between rich and poor in the United States.
To begin, the horrifying language in the beginning of the story gives the reader an
example of how people in their neighborhood speak. The author, Bambara does this
to show the reader that children from lower class neighborhoods are affected by
their surroundings and that children learn from experience. When Sylvia says
Miss Moore always plans boring ass things for us to do (171), we, the readers get
insight concerning Sylvia s rebellious behavior and her deficiency of respect
towards adults in her life. Sylvia uses irony to mock or convey contempt when she
mentions her experiences with Miss Moore. Bambara presented this to bring out
Sylvia s traits. Even though Sylvia is quick to be involved in mischief, the reader
can clearly tell she has a sense of moral principles as a result of her not being able
to go through with the crash of the Catholic church. When Sylvia says, everything
so hushed and holy and the candles and the bowin and the handkerchiefs on all the
drooping heads (175). Sylvia also describes churchgoing as a practice within the
community. When she says, Miss Moore, who always looked like she was going to
church, though never did (171). If Sylvia liked Miss Moore or not, the author,
Bambara is not using faith as an instrument to shape the story. Rather, it is Miss
Moore s education that is being used to affect Sylvia resistance.
The reader can tell Miss Moore is not what Sylvia is used to. When Sylvia
describes her as a nappy head bitch and her goddamn college degree (171). It
indicated that Sylvia is not used to being around an educated people. Miss Moore
had seen and experienced things in life that Sylvia has under no circumstances seen
or heard of. Miss Moore is a college educated woman, something her mother, father,

Christina Rossetti s poem, Goblin Market, was written in the Victorian era during a
time of vast social change across Europe. Though the Victorian period was a time of
female suppression and order, Rossetti exposed social stigmas and ideologies that are
displayed through the journey of two sisters, Laura and Lizzie. Despite initial
impressions of a childhood fairytale, the suggestive and multi interpretive use of
language signifies an underlying message of erotic sexual commentary and feminist
views. In addition, Rossetti conveys moral lessons by illustrating consequences of the

Ironically, Rossetti s portrayal of seduction is in stark contrast to accepted notions of
the Victorian period in that the male characters signify dangerous temptation, not the
troubled females. The goblin men confirm this contradiction by representing the
venomous effects that experienced seductive men have on innocent naive women.
Rossetti s ironic gender split exemplifies her progressive attitude of feminist thought
while also serving as a depiction on the principles of Victorian society. In addition,
the feminist view of sexuality is evident throughout Rossetti s poem. Laura and
Lizzie s magical experience portrays the pursuit for sensual awareness while
struggling between physical identity and spiritual salvation. Furthermore, She clipped
a precious golden lock, she dropped a tear more rare than pearl, then sucked their
fruit globes fair or red, sweeter than honey from the rock (ll. 126 29) and sucked until
her lips were sore (l. 136). With blatant sexual undertones, this pivotal moment
signifies the character s transition from maiden to woman or innocence to experience.
Additionally, this exchange could be a metaphor for Laura s relinquishment of her
sacred virginity. As Laura falls sicker and slowly begins to deteriorate, Rossetti
illustrates the consequences of succumbing to the temptation of men s deceit and the
importance of remaining pure. With use of vivid imagery, Rossetti further emphasizes
the animalistic and uncanny

class. Even if the two types of dance classes were very different, they still had little
bits and pieces that were similar and incorporated important concepts that coincided
with both of the two classes. Before this class, I had never seen a Beginning Lindy
and Swing technique class before, nor a ChoreographyThree class. In general, I had
never seen an instructor so passionate about expressing and teaching their craft to
their students.
I chose to observe the Beginning Lindy and Swing class first and foremost, because
it was the only class that I could watch that did not overlap with my personal and
academic schedule. The second reason why I chose this class was because, I had the
notion that this genre of dance class would be interesting and historical to watch. This
dance is also bold and pungent to look at. This style of class is interesting because
the dance choreography has multiple kicks and jumps which are repeated
consecutively throughout the performance. The reason I choose to watch the
choreography three class is because I wanted to see the students design their own
choreography, and observe how it presented cohesively to the audience.
In the technique class I expected to see male and female students in Lindy shoes and
wearing
40. UNM Art Museum
As of recently, I had visited the UNM Art Museum to explore their various exhibits.
There were four art exhibits at this art museum; Mata Ortiz, The 22nd Annual Juried
Graduate Exhibition, Remnants: Photographs From the Disfarmer Studio, and
Lightning Speak. Each exhibit portrayed similar characteristics, such as color, seating,
and physical space. As with each art gallery, white is the primary neutral color used
to display each piece. The white posts used to display certain pieces and walls gave
a very modern and clean feel to the museum. As for seating, I was much too
immersed into the art pieces to notice any seating areas during each exhibit. But I m
quite certain there weren t any in most of them except for The 22nd Annual Juried

In Duncan s book The Art Museum as a Ritual he explains the meaning behind art
museums, and how they are like rituals and are complex entities in which both art
and architecture are parts of a larger whole. In most ways, Duncan is correct about
art museums being like rituals. They are typically isolated, quiet, and have strict
rules on what you are allowed to bring and do within the museum. Each piece is
displayed beautiful in its own exclusive space. They also highly protect their pieces
and maintain them on a daily. Most people don t typically go to museums for a fun
experience rather they go for a more rich and enlightening experience; almost
something you can t replicate elsewhere because atmosphere and ambience is so
important. The reason why I bring up atmosphere and ambience is to connect it to
Duncan s claim that art museums appear as environments structured around specific
ritual scenario. Ambience and atmosphere are important aspects to museums in
order to feel like rituals. The atmosphere is museums often feel like a pseudo sacred
kind of place filled with a ritual like atmosphere. Duncan claims that it is, in my
view, precisely the complexity of the art museum its existence as a profoundly
symbolic cultural object as well as a social, political, and ideological instrument that
makes the notion of the museum as ritual so attractive, which means he believes that
museums act as a cultural object for social and political means. He believes that art
museums constitute one of those sites in which politically organized and socially
institutionalized power most avidly seeks to realize its desire to appear as beautiful,
natural, and legitimate. They are incredibly excellent places to study the history of
cultural forms. He believes they aren t ritual structures, but rather they stand as ritual
structures, since they contain vast
41. Device That Can Be Thought As A Gun
device that can be thought as a gun. The second screen has a surface that can record
or detect any wave or particle that manages to pass through the slits and strike the
screen. As will be seen, sometime the researcher will open just one slit and other
times both slits. The experiment is conducted in stages in order to contrast waves
from particles.
In the first stage a series of bullets (particles) will be fired toward the barrier with
one slit open. As expected a vertical pattern of bullet holes will appear behind slit 1.
After opening the second slit and firing another volley, a second vertical pattern will
appear right next to the first one. In other words the bullets behave just like particles
in accordance with classical physics as would be expected.
In stage two a monochromatic light (light with just one wavelength) will be emitted
toward the screen. This is in contrast to the light from a normal light bulb that is
composed of many differing wavelengths (making it difficult to observe the
interference pattern). The second screen is coated with a chemical that illuminates
when impacted by light. When the monochromatic light is emitted with only one slit
open, a pattern of brightness appears just behind the slit. But with both slits open an
interference pattern is observed consisting of bright bands where constructive
interference occurred and dark bands where destructive interference occurred. Again,
this is just what is expected.
In the third stage
42. Bormann s Symbolic Convergence Theory Essay
Bormann s Symbolic Convergence Theory
Ernest Bormann s Symbolic Convergence Theory offers a promising method of
looking at small group interaction and cohesiveness. When individuals who are not
familiar with each other come together for the sake of achieving a common goal, be
it a group in an organization or students working on a school project, the symbolic
convergence theory presents an understandable and generally accurate stance on how
cohesiveness within the group is attained.
The symbolic convergence theory is praised and even considered a bit unusual,
because it meets the criteria for both scientific and humanistic standards. Symbolic
Convergence Theory is credible because it fulfills the twin objectives of scientific ...

Fantasies do not include any communication that focuses on what is going on inside
of the group., For example, Bob is a member of a team in an advertising agency
and brings up an idea for a possible advertisement. Bob is not expressing a fantasy,
because he is discussing the work at hand. However, if Bob admits he is going
shopping after work to buy his son a bike for his seventh birthday, then he has
expressed a fantasy.
A fantasy chain reaction is a positive and energetic response to the initial fantasy.
When Bob mentions his son s birthday, several other group members add how they
must attend their son s soccer game after work, The atmosphere in the work
environment has gone from serious to comfortable and even energetic. When Bob
mentions his son s birthday, a fantasy chain reaction has been ignited. Other fantasies
emerge about children, soccer games, and birthdays. Once the fantasy chain reaction
begins, common ground is established between group members and a cohesion, no
matter how slight, has formed.
Cohesion within a group is not an immediate form of action. A single fantasy chain
event will not bring about complete cohesion. In the example above, it is possible
that a group member or members do not have children and thus would not engage in
the conversation. Their fantasies have not been expressed at that point, so common
ground has not been established between all members of the group.
