Essay on “Sympathy” by Paul Laurence Dunbar
Kaitlyn Williams
Honors 11
Mrs. Mosier
1 February 2012
Part 1: Exploring the Meaning of a Poem In the poem Sympathy by Paul Laurence Dunbar, he
describes himself, trapped like a bird in a cage, symbolizing himself being trapped somewhere
he has no desire to be. In the first stanza, the author describes a delightful scene with the sun
bright on the upland slopes (Dunbar 2). This might have been the author describing his life when
he graduated high school, thinking he had so many options with life. After reading into the
second stanza the mood changes, almost becoming gloomy. The author feels caged like this bird as
he is trying to beat his wing/ Till its blood is red on the cruel bars ; ( Dunbar 8 9). Dunbar was held

It has become a religious norm for hundreds of years to treat women like they are less than
human and inferior to men. In the article Women on the Front Lines of Faith vs. State by the
Monitor s Editorial Board it goes on to describe all the tortures that women have had to endure.
Hilary Clinton tries to define the line between faith based bias and human rights (Monitor s
Editorial Board 1). In the holy land of Israel signs were put up at religious synagogues telling
women they could not even walk past the holy sanctuaries with out prosecution. Government
workers quickly removed the signs and denounced the discrimination (Monitor s Editorial Board
2). Israeli woman are known for not even being able to show their heads in public, the men of
this country do not see the women as being equal in rights and privileges. In Israel it is just
normal to treat women differently especially in public, like they are strictly sexual beings (Monitor
s Editorial Board 3). Women are treated as less than humans in most of these countries. This article
was very similar in comparison to this poem, sympathy by Paul Laurence Dunbar. Dunbar feels the
discrimination because of his skin color, and was denied the chance to further advance in his
writing career because

John Rawls Views On Social Justice
Everyday all over the world, people are victims of injustices done to them by their own people or
done to them by enemies. Some individuals that perform the injustices may not understand that
they are doing so. So that brings about the question of how does one categorize doing justice
versus doing an injustice? It may seem obvious to some but may be far from recognizable to
others. John Rawlswas a political and moral philosopher that had his own views that helped shape
the concepts of social justice. There are two main principles the Mr. Rawls based his theory off
and those are that everyone should have equal rights and that social and economic inequalities are
looked at and applied so that they are a great benefit of the least advantaged... Show more content

Thomas Aquinas is a philosopher that discussed the three conditions for a Just War. The first
requirement is that the war must be waged by a person of authority and that it cannot be started by
a private person. The protection of people is for those with authority to handle. The second
requirement is that it must be for a good reason or a just cause. The reason for this is because those
who are slain are being slain for their faults committed. The third requirement is the intention to
promote good and to avoid evil. Thinking about these three requirements, the thought of the most
recent wars might come to mind. Were these three aspects applied before going to war? It is hard
to answer that because there are many details unknown to the general population but most people
would say that these were not applied (Mitchell) (St. Thomas

Celiac Disease

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune mediated enteropathy secondary to permanent sensitivity to
wheat gluten and related proteins in rye and barley. It results in characteristic histologic changes
consisting of inflammation, crypt hyperplasia, and villous atrophy of the small intestine in
genetically susceptible individuals. Significant variability in the clinical presentation of
CD in the pediatric population complicates recognition of the disease in many patients. Treatment
for CD consists of a lifelong strict gluten free diet (GFD). Adherence to this diet is associated with
resolution of most related signs and symptoms and a decreased risk of related complications. With

The Adventures Of Tom Sawyerby Mark Twain is a 271 page novel. Tom is a boy, and merely and
exactly an ordinary boy on the moral side. What makes him delightful to the reader is that on the
imaginative side he is very much more, and though every boy has wild and fantastic dreams, this
boy cannot rest till he has somehow realized them. The story is a wonderful study of the boy mind,
which inhabits a world quite distinct from that in which he is bodily present with his elders, ... Show

Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half brother Sid. He skips school to swim and is
made to whitewash the fence the next day as punishment. He cleverly persuades his friends to trade
him small treasures for the privilege of doing his work. He then trades the treasures for Sunday
School tickets which one normally receives for memorizing verses consistently, redeeming them for
a Bible, much to the surprise and bewilderment of the superintendent who thought it was simply
preposterous that this boy had warehoused two thousand sheaves of Scriptural wisdom on his
premises a dozen would strain his capacity, without a doubt.
Tom falls in love with Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, and persuades her to get engaged by
kissing him. But their romance collapses when she learns Tom has been engaged previously to
Amy Lawrence. Shortly after Becky shuns him, he accompanies Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard
at night, where they witness a trio of body snatchers, Dr. Robinson, Muff Potter, and Injun Joe,
getting into a fight. While Potter is knocked unconscious during the scuffle, Injun Joe stabs the
doctor to death and later pins the blame on Potter, who is arrested for the murder. Potter is then
shunned by the whole town, except Huck and Tom, who knew the real story. They decided to keep
mum about this incident because they are afraid of Injun Joe murdering them. Tom and Huck run

Charles Darwin And Jean Baptiste Lamarck, Beliefs Opinions...
Theory of evolution
Evolution can be defined as any change in the heritable traits within a population across
generations . (what is evolution, stated clearly YouTube, 2016). Every living creature can
reproduce making another copy of themselves with small variations. The variation can consist of
characteristics Like the passing down of fur colour in mice or the development of the length in cane
toad s legs. When these changes occur to their offspring s, evolution has taken place. Whilst many
scientists believed in the theory of evolution, alters to the belief extended to a certain extent.
Throughout this essay two scientists, Charles Darwin and Jean Baptiste Lamarck, beliefs opinions
and theories of evolution will be deconstructed.
Charles Darwin s theory
It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most
responsive to change (good reads, Origin of the species quotes, 2016) Charles Robert Darwin, was
an English naturalist and geologist, best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. Born
on the 12 February 1809, United Kingdom, Darwin wrote his discoveries and theories in his book
Origin of the species which became very successful when published. He based his theory on natural
section. A process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and
produce more offspring. Darwin believed changes that allow an organism to better adapt to its
environment will help it survive and have

Crude Oil Last 10 Years
INTRODUCTION
The role of petroleum products in our lives is unquestionable. It is safe to say that oil is the
cornerstone of our civilization. A pessimist might argue that without oil our industrial society will
collapse and there will be rapid decline in the world population. But again that is a pessimist s
view, personally we would like to think that we will in near future find other energy sources on
which we can depend and build our civilization to reach the next milestone.
In this report we have tried to highlight the fluctuations of crude oil during the period of 2001 10.
The scope of this report is limited only to this period as we believe that events that took place
during this decade had the potential to change the oil game so ... Show more content on

Thus the oil market participants producers, refiners, marketers, and traders would not have one of
their bases for setting prices in their contracts and other transactions. It does not appear that the oil
industry was materially affected by the closing of the Nymex, which, in any event, resumed all
operations in about one week. While the immediate effect of the attacks on petroleum markets was
to drive prices up, market forces reflecting little change in supply and demand acted quickly, and
crude oil prices eased within little more than a week. Average crude oil prices paid by U.S.
refiners actually declined for the month of September 2001 falling to $20.82 per barrel from $24.08
in the previous month.
2002:
After moving lower in 2001, crude oil prices moved higher in 2002 reaching over $30 per barrel
in September 2002. Higher prices were supported by a number of factors. One was the ongoing
U.S. war on terrorism and rising tensions with Iraq. There was the likely potential that military
action would be taken against Iraq that would disrupt the supply of crude oil to the market. With
that issue still not settled as 2002 drew to a close, crude oil prices continued to find support.
While there were factors supporting higher prices, there were also factors working against them.
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) after a meeting in 2001 agreed that
production of oil would be cut. The

Fayol s Functions of Management
To what extent are Fayol s functions of management relevant in today s predominantly service
economy? Discuss.
Fayol s functions of management are as relevant today, just as they have been a century ago, both
theoretically and practically. Though under harsh scrutiny by some theorists as an oversimplified
theory of management, this essay argues that Fayol s functions are not just part of a grand theory,
they form a basis for all managerial work. In addition, Fayol s functions are seen as flexible and
malleable, adding to their application to today s world. This essay also suggests that today s
predominantly service economy, as fast paced and ephemeral as it is, is a stark proof of Fayol s
theory s success. The position is taken that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Further, this explains how Fayol s functions can be suited to a variety of managerial and
organisational contexts.
It is the combinational property of flexibility and authority that make Fayol s four functions
relevant today, even in a predominantly service economy. Managers today have had to learn to plan
and organise better than before in order to offer services beyond the physical product, they had to
learn to become stronger leaders in order to push away from traditional bricks and mortar markets
and have had to learn to be controlling in ensuring a smooth transition. Furthermore, they allowed
managers to become organisational experts, rather than skills experts, and hence the ability to work
with large markets and economies than physical products and machinery (Pryor Taneja, 2010). In
addition, these four functions have been so extensively used that management today is virtually
synonymous with them, if not structured around them (Lamond, 2003).
It is useful then, to see what happens when Fayol s functions are not observed, as in the case of the
Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDP). In this heavily service organisation (offering
anything from medication to dietary health programs to planning for the state s health future), the
repercussions of ignoring Fayol s principles were a public scandal circulating

Red Tide Research Paper
Madison Easterbrook David Fugate OCE 3008C April 25, 2016 Red Tide in West Florida Red
tide is a very serious issue that severely affects the West Coast of Florida. Red tide is defined as a
toxic bloom in red dinoflagellates. It has major impacts on its surroundings. Algal species that
have harmful effects are commonly referred to as Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Toxic red tide
is threatening tourism in West Florida as well as wildlife, specifically the endangered manatees as
it extends down the Florida coast. When conditions are right, dinoflagellates will bloom in very
large numbers. Red tides name comes from the color that the blooms give the water when there are
high concentrations of algae. Don Anderson, a senior scientist at the Woods... Show more content on

Oxygen depletion will create stress which can take years to recover. These HABs can also
suppress mammalian immune functions which results in mass mortalities of dolphins and
manatees. This can be seen by a significant reduction in manatee lymphocytes in cell culture that
are exposed to these toxins. With all of this evidence of the negative impacts of these toxins, it
shows the need to recognize these biotoxins as significant stressors within south west Florida
coastal ecosystems. HABs in Florida have had a major impact on seabirds in the west Florida
area. Seabirds that were admitted for rehabilitation in 2005 2006 after a severe bloom on the west
coast of Florida showed signs of disorientation, inability to stand, and seizures. Scientists tested the
blood, biologic fluids, and tissues of the seabirds in search of brevetoxin, and found that 69% of
the seabirds tested had this toxin present in their bodies. The four species that were most affected
were the Double crested Cormorants, Brown Pelicans, Great Blue Herons, and Common Loons.
Through blood and fecal samples taken from several of the seabirds during rehabilitation, it was
found that the brevetoxin was expelled from their bodies within 5 19 after being admitted to the
rehabilitation facility. In the seabirds that died, high areas in the body of highest brevetoxin
concentrations were found in bile, stomach contents, and

Jane Austen s A Light Hearted And Simplistic View Of...
Jane Austen presents a light hearted and simplistic view of society through the ordinary lives in
Emma. Every character is linked and connected to the location of Highbury in some way. The
limited social and geographical range does pose weaknesses in this active yet reserved village.
Austen s recognition of flaws behind gossip, marriage and social status, provide readers delight
and a sense of identification. Emma successfully stimulates awareness to the effects of isolation,
and generates appreciation for our own social privileges and position. Austen creates a dynamic
community through the way characters engage and behave against traditional and established
conventions. Highbury s isolation from the rest of England suggests boredom and loneliness will
simultaneously follow. Conversely, this lays the foundation for future drama and conflict to
follow. One large source of gossip is stirred by the letter written from mysterious Frank Churchill
to Mrs Weston. Such communication between Highbury and the outside makes this matter
significant as Frank threatens the harmony and social order of Highbury. As a result every
morning visit in Highbury included some mention of the handsome letter . The ability to listen
and retell, is necessary for Emma s community in order to avoid the dull seclusion. Mrs Elton is
another cause for trivial issues, who tries to raise her social status level to that of Emma. Her
snobbery is emphasised in Emma s thoughts when described as a person

Research Methods And Design Course At River Community College
Introduction I used the proposal developed in the 692 Research Methods and Design course to
collect data that would answer my main question, With what frequency and consistency do
students and professors use the literacy support services available at River Community College?
and its four sub questions. This data was collected between January 11 to March 31, 2016. The
support provided by my family, Dr. Wilcox, my 694 Reading ResearchPracticum fellow student,
and my selected critical colleague allowed me to successfully complete my data collection, my
analysis, and my report.
Educational Research Research, educational and action, are key to the continued improvement of
educational methodologies and strategies. Educational research provides theories and pedagogy by
organizing empirical facts (Johnson, 2012, p. 9). These scientific studies reach peer reviewed
conclusions that can be applied in multiple situations. Action research is more specific and focuses
to provide a usable action plan (Johnson, 2012, p. 16). In the 692 and 694 courses, I use the five
essential steps (Johnson, 2012, p. 16) to conduct an action research project by asking if students at
Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) were given literacy support because so many of my
students seemed to struggle with reading and comprehending course texts and writing course
assignments, even though they demonstrated interest in and understanding of the material in class.

Reviewing The Supreme Court Of Canada Case
Analyzing the Supreme Court of Canada Case:
Carter v. Canada (Attorney General) the Death with Dignity Case
The appellants Lee Carter, Hollis Johnson and Gloria Taylor joined with other appellants to
bring the civil claim which is against the prohibition on assisted suicide found in s. 14 and s. 241
(b) of the Criminal Code (Carter, para. 20). The same issue which was brought in Rodriguez v.
British Columbia 20 years ago was declared to be constitutional. In this case, ultimately Lee Carter
s appeals succeeded.
The Law Before the Ruling According to s. 14 and s. 214 (b) of the Canada Criminal Code, the
law criminalized the person who aids another person to commit suicide and it banned the death
inflicted on that person. In short, these provisions did not allow a person to seek a physician
assisted death, regardless of being suffered intolerably from a serious or incurable disease (Carter,
para.1).
Questions Before the Court
пЂWhether the Criminal Code provisions prohibiting physician assisted dying found in s. 241 (b)
violates the claimants rights to life, liberty and security (s.7) and rights to equal treatment (s. 15) of
the Charter (Carter, para.29, 40).
пЂWhether the prohibition is justified under s.1 of the Canadian Charter (Carter, para.2).
пЂWhether the trial judge was bound by stare decisis in Rodriguez (Carter, para.28, 42).

Antwone Dream Analysis
Psychodynamic therapists find that free association is helpful in treating their clients because it
allows them to say whatever comes to mind. The client is encouraged to talk about anything and
everything seeing as it may help them accept any kind of limitations or discord they may have. This
process of treatment would not be the best route for Antwone s therapist to take. Antwone struggles
in creating conversation out of nothing and when it comes to talking about his issues, that process
is no different.
Dream analysis, however, could be an effective way for a counselor to treat the problems that
Antwone is having. As a currently angry individual, Antwone recalls some of the dreams he was
having when trying to sleep. The movie opens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many concepts that can be used to help conceptualize the problems that Antwone Fisher
experiences.
To begin conceptualizing Antwone s feelings through an Adlerian lens, a counselor might try to
spot inferiority feelings within the client. These feelings are always present and ultimately act as a
motivating force behind an individual s outward behavior. One could argue that Antwone s
inferiorities stem from the abuse he suffered at such a young age, which halted the average
development most humans encounter. In order for an individual to overcome these inferiorities,
they begin to act in compensative behaviors. Since Antwone s traumas began in infancy, he never
had any kind of stable environment and the one in which he was finally placed (the Tate s) caused
him to quickly feel inferior. Antwone may have ultimately developed an inferiority complex
because he was never able to compensate his inferiority feelings as an infant. The inferiority
complex that Antwone developed has prevented him from being able to cope with the demands of
life enabling him to use violence as a way to forget.
Antwone s problems can be further conceptualized when thinking about social interest and
community feeling. Social interest is being concerned about others just as much as an individual is
concerned about oneself. Community feeling is concerned with feeling connected to all of
humanity. Antwone, throughout the movie, is seen drawing, writing, and

The Rise and Fall of Alexandria Essay
A Literature Review of The Rise and Fall of Alexandria
Book Review of The Rise and Fall of Alexandria How the modern world was actually established is
often overlooked and attributed to the powers and domination of Athens and Rome. What authors
Justin Pollard and Howard Reid urge readers to understand, however, is the significance that the city
of Alexandria had on Western Civilization. Both authors have worked in British and American
television, and are accomplished in the film/documentary industry. Reid has also previously written
five other books. In their narrative book, The Rise and Fall of Alexandria, they seek to emphasize

7). He wanted Egypt as part of his growing empire. Not long after in 323 BC, however, Alexander
died and left this newly established city to his half brother and baby son. Alexander s childhood
friend, Ptolemy, soon came to rule over the city and Alexandria began rising. Ptolemy had plans
for the city and began building innovative roads and two sea harbors. With these new
developments, authors note, the fundamental plan of the greatest city in the ancient world was
complete. Houses, slaves, cattle, and taxpayers were being taken from surrounding villages and
given to the capital city of Alexandria. When Ptolemy s son and successor (Ptolemy II) began his
rule on the city, he, too, threw himself into developing Alexandria and created a currency that could
be used to sell and trade. Structures were built, such as temples and the lighthouse, and Alexandria
was becoming known as the light of the world (p. 92).
Along with the furthering of physical growth to the city of Alexandria, there was also growth
politically and religiously. Ptolemy wished to fuse ancient thinking with the modern thinking of
the Greeks, so he devised a plan and created a cult through a fusion of two gods: the god of the
dead and the living bull. And this Greco Egyptian cult was created and called Serapis. Through this
newly founded religion and the constant furthering of the city s buildings and technology,
Alexandria began to rise.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Blantching In Cooking
3.3 BLANCHING
Blanching is a cooking process in which the food substances, usually a fruit or vegetable, is
immersed in boiling water at temperature ranging approximately from 70В°C to 100В°C ,
removed after a brief, period of time, and finally poured into iced water or placed under cold
running water to half the cooking process. The outer part of the fruit will easy to peel off as
putting vegetables or fruits in boiling water for a minute before putting them into ice water will
making the outer part of the fruit become soft. For an example, when almonds or pistachios are

This cooking method usually contains more than one utensils and equipment. When the water is
heated or boiled until it has passed 2120F, the water will turn into steam.
Steaming has more advantages compared to other similar cooking method such as boiling,
simmering or blanching because it doesn t involve agitation so it is actually gentler on delicate
items like fish, prawn, etc. Besides that, steaming cooking method doesn t require the food to be
submerged completely into the water so it prevents the nutrients loss.
When a food is steamed, it also cooked quite fast. The heat of the steam depends on how hot the
water temperature is. The higher the temperature of water, the hotter the steam becomes. Cooking
with steaming method can be done by putting a pot containing sufficient water on the stove and
another layer of pot such as basket above it so that the food will not drowned inside the water and
then the pot is covered. This technique is also called as compartment steaming . The hot steam that
circulates throughout the pot will cook the food quickly. Besides, the bamboo basket steamers used
in Asian Cuisine that we can usually see in dim sum restaurant or pao restaurant is also an example
of a compartment

What Is Metaphors Used In The Gothic Novel
These dark overtones and internal tensions laid the foundation perfectly for the development of the
gothic novel. The fear of the unknown are represented in Radcliffe s gothic novel as the mystery
surrounding the fates of other women. Once Emily has found out the truth about the other women,
then she is freed of her fears and is able to cope with them. In a very real way she has made the
transition to confidence in herself and her own future. This particular brand of gothic novel seems
to be an encouragement to women and reassures them. Metaphors and Simile have been a part of
the human experience since man began comparing and contrasting things to one another. Used by
poets and novelists alike to express comparisons, these elements are extremely useful to the writer.
Radcliffe manages to use metaphors to continue and round out the overall tone of the novel. This,
too, is evident in the Vol. 2, ch. 5 example. As the landscape changes, she is evoking an implied
metaphor stating that experience is constantly changing and that sometimes, if one is lucky, one
will suddenly hit upon an inner truthor two, which comes as a result of the constant changing.
Interestingly enough, Radcliffe also employs very Romantic Era techniques of utilizing nature to
illustrate some of these truths, both inner and outer. In the Vol. 2, ch. 5 piece, the landscape is
described in detail. If Classical styles were seen as being typically calm, harmonious, balanced,
structured, and rational, then

Aphra Ben s Oroonoko and Daniel Defoe s Moll Flanders
In his Dictionary of Literary Terms, Harry Shaw defines the novel: In effective narrative literature,
fictional persons, through characterization, become so credible that they exist for the reader as real
people, he says (1). Many eighteenth century British novelists neglected to earn this credibility.
Looking specifically at Aphra Behn s Oroonoko and Daniel Defoes Moll Flanders, Shaw s
definition becomes especially difficult to apply to Moll and Oroonoko s narrator. While the novels
should not be declared unsuccessful in their entireties, perhaps the sincerity claimed in both
introductions only lessens their overall believability.
In the opening lines of his preface, Defoe tells us, the Author is here suppos d to be writing her
own History (1). Behn makes a similar claim in his novel: I was myself an eyewitness to a great part,
of what you will find here set down, and what I could not be witness of, I received from the mouth
of the chief actor in this history, the hero himself (75). And soon the authors claims prove
themselves to be untrue with a sizeable lack of reality in their characterization. Perhaps we cannot
blame the authors themselves, but rather their time. Serving as the inventors of the realist novel,
eighteenth century writers like Aphra Behn and Daniel Defoe were without a foundation to follow
and with the development of characters that are perhaps too unique, situations idealized, and blatant
claims of truthfulness, thus fail to convince the

A Midsummer Night s Dream Vs Hoffman
Love triangles or love squares are often featured in romantic comedies today. William
Shakespeare introduced the genre and perfected it when he wrote A Midsummer Night s Dream
(Bevington). A Midsummer Night s Dream is one of the most popular plays written by
Shakespeare. In 1999, Michael Hoffman directed a film adaptation of the play under the same
name. While Hoffman kept true to the dialogue, he changed and added some details to the play
and consequently, nullified the play s mirth and good humour. The movie and the play are similar
but differ from each other in various ways. Shakespeare set the story in Athens in the 1500s and
Hoffman set it in an Italian village in the 1900s. Theseus is the Duke of Athens and Hippolyta is

Gender Equality And Gender Differences Of The Play Top...
The plays Top Girls and A Streetcar Named Desire are written in ways that explore the issues
surrounding gender equality and gender differences. Churchill explores the ideas of a feminist
utopia where the men and women live in separate spheres which are prescribed to suit the
stereotypical roles of the genders. For example at this time power dressing was a real strategy
used by the new breed of feminists struggling for identity in society. We learn about the relationship
between women and working. However, Williams s characters in A StreetCar Named Desire
crucially succumb to the prescribed genderroles where the women are expected to be meekly
obedient in a patriarchal society ruled by the opposite sex.
Top Girls is set in the early 1980 s, and mainly plays with two main concerns travelling around the
1980 s feminism and socialism. We unravel a great number of ideas within the novel that mirror
the characters rejection of their gender roles. The theme in Top Girls is mostly addressing the
ideologies around feminism at a significant time. This is portrayed in a direct manner and tone
which veer from bizarre and dreamlike to mundane and give us an insight of the contemporary
events going on outside of the play. The time this play was written holds high importance as it was
the time of power dressing and was a real up lift for women struggling for identity in modern
society.
Churchill portrays the central protagonist Marlene as representing the rise of women s

The Qr Transformation Protects The Upper Hessenberg Type...
The QR transformation protects the upper Hessenberg type of the first matrix, and the workload on
such a matrix is O(n2) per cycle as restricted to O(‪n3) on a general framework. As s tends to
infinity, the original matrix merges to a structure where the eigenvalues are either segregated on
the corner to corner or are eigenvalues of a 2 Г— 2 sub matrix on the diagonal. Thus, we can see
that the QR transformation reduces the complexity and the number of iterations. QR is one of the
mostly used algorithms for finding the eigenvalues of a matrix, where Q represents an orthogonal
matrixand R an upper triangular one, R comes from right.

Now we consider a non singular matrix with real entries, either symmetrical or not. In essence, the
QR algorithm is based on the following property:
If A is factorized in the product A=QR, where Q is non singular, then the matrix of the product in
reverse order, A =RQ, has the same eigenvalues as A has (having similarity with A).
The invention of the QR algorithm
The QR transformation was introduced in the late 1950s by John G.F. Francis (England) [6] and
by Vera N. Kublanovskaya (USSR) [7], working separately. The QR calculation has been named

Fractional Distillation of Hexane and Toluene
Aim/Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to separate and purify the liquid components of a
mixture with a known composition using a technique called fractional distillation. In order to do so,
a liquid mixture is separated into three fractions in the first distillation; then, one of the fractions
produced is redistilled to increase the purity of the liquid. Since two rounds of distillation occur, the
process is termed fractional distillation. Additionally, it is crucial for students to understand the
principles of gas chromatography so the purity and percent composition of each fraction can be
determined.
Theory: The basis for this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Theoretical plates represent the stage in which two phases, such as the liquid and vapor phase of a
substance, establish equilibrium with one another. Thus, since the Hickman still has a short column
and a complete separation of hexane and toluene cannot be achieved in one cycle, there are two
theoretical plates in this experiment: one from the original distillation where three fractions are
recovered, and one from the redistillation of one of the fractions to produce more pure portions.
This experiment involves the separation of a solution containing hexane and toluene.
These compounds meet the criteria mentioned above since their boiling points are approximately
40В°C apart (hexane: 69В°C; toluene: 111В°C). During the first distillation, the liquid mixture is
separated into three fractions. These three fractions must be collected at the specific temperature
ranges shown below:
Desired Composition
Temperature Range
Mostly Hexane
60В° 70В°C
Equal Portions of Hexane and Toluene
75В° 85В°C
Mostly Toluene
85В° 105В°C
The phase diagram of hexane and toluene depicts the relationship between temperature and the
mole fraction of the mixture, revealing that as the mole fraction of hexane and toluene changes, the
boiling point of the mixture changes as well. It is important to note that at any given point, the mole
fraction of hexane and toluene must equal 1.0. The graph below displays the changes mentioned
above in regards to the phase diagram and the

Alice s Adventures in Wonderland
Is Alice s Adventures in Wonderland as absurd and nonsensical as it seems to be without any traces
of morals hiding underneath the bizarre shaped tea cups and crooked smiles? Alice s Adventures in
Wonderland, written by an English author in 1865 under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, contains
obscurities that leave people uncertain due to the nonsense. The novel holds many obscurities, such
as a disappearing Cheshire Cat, a personified rabbit, and a caterpillar who smokes from a hookah.
These characters hold a common feature of madness, yet the nonsense of this novel relates to the
nonsense of Lowell High School, a public school that piles bricks of pressure on their students
leading them to madness. Although, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland
contains a series of puzzles
that seem unsolvable, it symbolizes a strong foundation that helps Lowell High School ninth
graders gain knowledge about surviving the competitive school. Out of the whimsical growth
changes of Alice, a ninth grader learns to present themselves as their true self. In the novel, Alice
grows and shrinks frequently; she finds this very confusing, especially when a talking Pigeon
mistakes her for a serpent when she drinks potion that makes her neck longer. (Carroll, 34 35)
When Alice eats, she grows and as she drinks, she shrinks. Alice feels uncomfortable in her skin
and it frustrates her that she cannot achieve the right size. As Alice struggles to maintain a

Role and Concept of Sleary s Circus in Hard Times
Hard Times is a Charles Dickens novel set in the social backdrop of the Victorian era during the
Industrial Revolution that took place during the 1850s. The ill effects of Victorian Utilitarianism
are upheld in this moralistic vision of the writer. Unlike most of his novels, Hard Times is not
based in London but in the red and black seemingly monotonous structures of Coketown. That
being said, it still realistically allows the reader to observe the systems and structures of society
forced to face various economic and social hardships. What preserves the novelas a social

compassion for Sissy, he is aware that it is not economically viable for the company to keep her
and therefore thinks of more suitable alternatives like her continued education. Unlike Gradgrind
who condemns his daughter to an incompatible and unsuitable marriage. The circus as a whole
with all its colours is a great visual contrast to the image evoked by Coketown. It is not shrouded
by the by product of its labour, like the soot that coated the city. The circus, here, stands for all that

the doubt prevalent in most of society, even with all the privileges and high standards of morality
they seem to possess. It is able to address issues like education that is only successful when

Louis Giannetti Neorealism
Neorealism, as the name suggests, is a new realism. Louis Giannetti gives a definition in the book
Understanding Movies that Strongly realistic in its techniques, neorealism emphasized
documentary aspects of film art, stressing loose episodic plots, unextraordinary event and
characters, natural lighting, actual location settings, nonprofessional actors, a preoccupation with
poverty and social problems, and an emphasis on humanistic and democratic ideas. (Giannetti, 2004,

First, Bicycle Thieves is a representative work of Italian neorealism. Italian neorealism actually
rose in frustration. After World War II, all neglected matters in Italy were yet to be dealt with.
Reflected in the area of film production, the war destroyed the film factory and created scarcity of

How Social Exclusion Affects The Feeling Of Physical Coldness
Psychologists Chen Bo Zhong and Geoffrey Leonardelli from the University of Toronto wanted
to analyze the idea that social exclusion generates a physical response of coldness. In 2008, they
did just that by carrying out an experimental study to address two questions in two different
experiments; whether recall of a specific (social exclusion) event influences the feeling of physical
coldness. The second experiment is based on the hypothesis of the first, given that coldness leads
to the liking for warm or coldfood. The present paper examines whether or not notions such as cold

The purpose was to revive their feelings of isolation and loneliness. Comparatively, the other group
recalled an experience in which they had been socially acknowledged and included into a group.
Researchers hypothesized that priming social exclusion, as opposed to inclusion, would lead
participants to report lower room temperature in experiment 1 and thus prefer hot food and drink
in Experiment 2. The results of the experiments were in line with the experimental predictions that
social exclusion leads to physical coldness and that the lack of social acceptance leads people to
seek hot food and drinks. The following paragraphs will analyze Zhong s research, evaluating
strengths, limitations, and possible improvements for Experiment 1 and 2.

this doesn t equate for external validity, as it is very unclear by what event the participants referred
to as social exclusion. The researchers refer to previous studies carried out by Bargh, Chen,

Rocking Horse Winner
Being loved and cared for is what most people have grown up to know. Rocking Horse Winner
by DH Lawrence is about a little boy who wants to make his mother happy. Lawrence uses
money, the house, and the rocking horse as symbols to convey the theme that greed destroys
happiness. To start off, money symbolises happiness for a person. In the story it is said, There
must be more money! There must be more money! to make it be known that they need more
money constantly. It also tries to say that luck is all you need and that it is better to be born
lucky than rich . If you re rich you may lose your money. But if you re lucky you ll always get
more money (Gillett). The luck will always be with you. The story breaks down to the ones who
think puts love with money and luck with happiness . Paul s mom thinks that money will make her
happy though it has not yet. Paul, who learns from his motherto associate love with money,
represents the desperate search for values in a cash culture. The force of Lawrence s satire is
directed at a society that is dominated by a quest for cash, and at those who buy into the deadly
equation of love equals money (Piedmont Marton). When he felt that he made his mother happy,

Ava Maria Plena Gratia
The story of Jesus birth is a well known part of the Bible and an important part of Christian and
Catholic beliefs. The Nativity has been interpreted and written in many different ways, such as the
two poems Ava Maria Plena Gratia by Oscar Wilde and I saw a stable, low and very bare by Mary
Elizabeth Coleridge. Ava Maria Plena Gratia is a description of Marys conception of Jesuswhen the
angel Gabriel visited her, while I saw a stable, low and very bare describes the events after Jesus
birth in the manger with the farm animals and his two parents around him. The two poems both
describe events that contribute to the Nativity, as well as the symbol of innocence, which is
shown differently through Mary and Jesus. Mary has been given many titles, such as the
Madonna, the Holy Mother, the Virgin Mary, Our Lady, and so on. Ave Maria Plena Gratia

is reason to (i.e. sourced, well established,... ). Additionally, I think that I am more motivated in the
recent months to work more at my hobbies that I have been neglecting.
4. What am I realizing about myself as a learner? That I really enjoy working hard, and learning. I
had thought that I had started to lose some of my interest in learning over the last few years,
fortunately though, this is not the case. Also, I used to not really enjoy writing essays, however, I
am actually enjoying the process a lot now.
5. In what ways am I able to apply the ideas and concepts gained to my own experience?
One of the most important aspects of a programming is their ability to solve problems. I hope
that I continue to take this concept to heart in the years to come. If I continue to enjoy the process
of problem solving and by extension critical thinking then I believe that my life will become very
simple, and instead of having a bunch of unsolvable issues, I could have easily solvable

THE COMPANIES THAT DROPPED TIGER WOODS
Abstract
This paper explores the truth about when a popular athlete such as Tiger Woodsmakes a mistake or
is even just faced with accusations of a crime these moral clauses are revisited extensively, because
the end results and affects of such a marketing campaign that includes a celebrity endorsement can
be detrimental to a company s image. This is their way of looking for any and every means to
protect themselves.
Let s not downplay that current market situations indicate that celebrity endorsement advertising

We tend to think that whether one ought to be retained in a particular job position depends on
whether they are qualified for the job, rather than whether they are a generally decent person.
Suggesting that Tiger, Kobe, Magic, or Jordan should not be allowed to pursue their profession
in virtue of their personal indiscretions would amount to a unique kind of discrimination. From
the standpoint of employment qualifications, one s sexual behavior is usually an irrelevant
consideration. This brings us to the second consideration concerning punishment in one s
professional life based on actions in one s personal life. We tend to think that there is an
important separation between one s public life and one s private affairs. When one is a celebrity
like Tiger Woods, this line is blurred considerably, and one might claim that the loss of this
distinction is the price one pays for fame. However, this imposes an arbitrary constraint on a
person s individual freedoms. If one has a right to the maintenance of a public and a private sphere,
the fact that a person is famous is not obviously a reason for violating this right.
THE COMPANIES THAT DROPPED TIGER WOODS The second ethical question raised by
the Tiger Woods affair scandal concerns whether it is ethical to break a professional contract
based on a person s actions in their personal life. This is a complicated question, and I will limit
the discussion to one pertinent facet of it. If Tiger

The Dependence of Our Society on Technology
During the past two decades technology has seen an explosive progression. In this time we have
come from very few people having personal computers, let alone those that were able to connect to
the internet to having the equivalent of multiple of these machine in our pockets connected to the
internet at all times. In today s society many people opt to use their mobile deviceover a traditional
computer and these devices make it rather appealing and easy to do so. With applications that
are built to make life easier, games to waste a few minutes, movies and music at the touch of a
finger who wouldn t chose this over the alternative! The problem is when we become too
dependent on these devices. Do we really need to be connected twenty four hours a day? Is this
technology restricting our ability to be productive without it? Can the users succeed in everyday
activities like traveling without these devices? This is a very new topic for argument but one
that needs to be thought about and analyzed. What society must realize is that we are becoming
too dependent on these devices and need to make reasonable concessions or preparations in the
case of a failure. When we take a look at the uses of these devices we will find that they have an
absolute plethora of uses. Smart phones can be used for the original use of making phones calls,
but that is really the simplest use of the device. We can actually use these devices to replace GPS
systems and aid in navigation, play video games,

Web Architecture And Components That Enable Internet And...
Unit 28 Website Production Assignment 1
Alex Aricci 2nd October 2014
P1
Introduction
The purpose of this report is to outline the web architecture and components that enable internet and
web functionality.
Internet Service Providers (ISP)
ISPs are the companies which own or rent the infrastructure which provides internet access to its
customers for a fee. ISPs often offer different services at different price points with more
expensive ones often having higher bandwidth and download limits (or no download limits at all)
as well as sometimes providing phone and digital TV services (for instance, Sky, Virgin, BT)
although available services vary locally due to differences in infrastructure.
Web Hosting Services
Web hosting services provide space and bandwidth on the internet for people to make their
websites available online. When a web page is requested the web host sends a web page to someone
trying to access it via a server.
Domain Structure
The Domain Name system is a system on the internet used to translate IP addresses (long string of
numbers that describe the location of a resource on the internet) into recognisable names, this
makes it easier for humans to navigate the internet as it is much easier to remember the name of a
website than to remember its I.P. address. It is a hierarchical system that points users to various
resources, computers or services on the internet, such as images or videos.

American novelist and short story author, notably famous for The Great Gatsby. Born in St. Paul,
Minnesota, Fitzgerald was exceptionally bright and ambitious as a child. The pride and joy of his
parents, he attended St. Paul Academy where his first written piece was published in his school s
newspaper at the age of 13. At the age of 15, Fitzgerald s parents sent him to the Newman School,
a prestigious catholic school. He then graduated in 1913, then attending the elite Princeton
University. Shortly after enrolling, he dropped out of Princeton in order to serve in the U.S. Army
in World War I. While Fitzgerald was in the army, he earned the title Second

Middle School And High School
Growing up I had one favorite class, that class, surprisingly, was English. I was born in
Zacatecas, Mexico on May 9th, 1998 and was brought to the United States at the age of two.
When my parents tried to enroll me into a pre kindergarten program they were told that it was
unnecessary because I was way beyond my age group. My parents told me that it was from all of
the Scooby Doo shows I watched growing up. When kindergarten arrived, I was still forced to
take an English Learners class so I could get the best help that I could get to improve my English
skills. I remember sitting in that class watching all the other students have a difficult time
pronouncing simple words that they should be able to say by now. I stayed in that class until... Show

In 10th grade I had an English teacher by the name of Mrs. Hurley. The school year started with
me disliking her, I thought she was extremely rude and was just cranky all the time. In her class
is where I read my first Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet she made that unit extremely
amusing. She had us split into families and we would have battles, they consisted of games and
quizzes. I was Lord Capulet and my team won of course. After 10th grade she became my
advisory teacher in 12th grade. She easily became one of my favorite teachers that constantly
teased me on my obsession with Adele. The teacher that made the biggest impact in my life was
Mrs. Marn. She was an extremely caring teacher, she did not like watching her students fail. She
made sure that everyone had everything they needed to be successful. She was, I believe, one of
the best English teacher Brooklyn Center High School has ever had. Her passion for books were out
of this world. She talked about authors as if though she has met them. She reminded me of a
hippie in some sorts. She was very open with us and I was close to her. She was my teacher for
10th, 11th, and 12th grade. I read, The Catcher in The Rye in her class and she tore that book up
piece by piece, explaining every motive and how innocence is huge part of that book. She was my
teacher for the college in the schools courses that I took. I felt like I failed her in those classes, she
expected way more of me and I did not perform to

Why The World Should Justify Jerusalem As Israel s Capital
In 1967, the Israelites captured Jerusalem during the Six Day War and named it as their capital.
However, to this day countries around the world still don t recognize it as Israel s capital because of
the conflict between Jews and Palestinians claiming it as their own. Recently, former president
Donald Trump made an announcement saying that the United States would move their embassy to
Jerusalemand recognize it as Israels capital. There are strong arguments and many reasons as to
why the world should recognize Jerusalem as Israel s capital. Throughout history, there is Biblical
and Non Biblical evidence that Jerusalem belongs to the Israelites. They have lived in Jerusalem
for more than 3,000 years and then claimed Jerusalem again as their

Indigenous Education And Bilingual Education
By the late 70s, the government had moved towards a hybrid system of having bilingual educators
use indigenous language in primary schools to teach the national Spanish based curriculum with
Spanish materials (Hamel, Indigenous Education 275). After failing once again to produce positive
educational outcomes, the government moved to a bilingual and bicultural model in the 80s, then
an intercultural one in the 90s that is still in use today (Hamel, Indigenous Education 275). In 1991,
the Mexican constitution was amended to explicitly recognize indigenous rights for the first time
by promising to protect and promote the development of [indigenous] languages [and] cultures
(Hamel, Indigenous Education 276). This right was further elaborated... Show more content on

A study on bilingualism and income found some negative correlation between speaking an
indigenous language and income. On average, male monolingual Spanish speakers earn 23% more
than bilinguals and monolingual speakers of indigenous languages, with no significant difference
between the income levels of the last two groups (Chiswick, Patrinos, and Hurst 350). Effects were
more pronounced in their female counterparts: monolingual female Spanish speakers earned about
28% more than bilinguals who, in turn, earned 25% more than monolingual indigenous language
speakers (Chiswick, Patrinos, and Hurst 350). However, there is no indication that learning an
indigenous language was the cause for this disparity. In fact, class was a much better predictor of
income and success than language of education (Chiswick, Patrinos, and Hurst 364). Still,
indigenous parents often believe that formally learning an indigenous language will not give their
children a competitive edge in the modern economy (Chiswick, Patrinos, and Hurst 364).
Specifically, they point to the fact that, when given the chance to send their children to bilingual
institutions, the majority of non indigenous people including many bilingual teachers and activists
for indigenous language education send their children to schools that teach English or French
(Garcia, Politics 79). Yet, these arguments made by indigenous parents are often discredited by
activists, who attribute the reluctance to participate in bilingual programs to the fact that the
parents themselves are uneducated and do not know what is best for themselves, their children, and
their communities (Garcia, Politics

  • 2. Essay on “Sympathy” by Paul Laurence Dunbar Kaitlyn Williams Honors 11 Mrs. Mosier 1 February 2012 Part 1: Exploring the Meaning of a Poem In the poem Sympathy by Paul Laurence Dunbar, he describes himself, trapped like a bird in a cage, symbolizing himself being trapped somewhere he has no desire to be. In the first stanza, the author describes a delightful scene with the sun bright on the upland slopes (Dunbar 2). This might have been the author describing his life when he graduated high school, thinking he had so many options with life. After reading into the second stanza the mood changes, almost becoming gloomy. The author feels caged like this bird as he is trying to beat his wing/ Till its blood is red on the cruel bars ; ( Dunbar 8 9). Dunbar was held back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the article Women on the Front Lines of Faith vs. State by the Monitor s Editorial Board it goes on to describe all the tortures that women have had to endure. Hilary Clinton tries to define the line between faith based bias and human rights (Monitor s Editorial Board 1). In the holy land of Israel signs were put up at religious synagogues telling women they could not even walk past the holy sanctuaries with out prosecution. Government workers quickly removed the signs and denounced the discrimination (Monitor s Editorial Board 2). Israeli woman are known for not even being able to show their heads in public, the men of this country do not see the women as being equal in rights and privileges. In Israel it is just normal to treat women differently especially in public, like they are strictly sexual beings (Monitor s Editorial Board 3). Some individuals that perform the injustices may not understand that they are doing so. So that brings about the question of how does one categorize doing justice versus doing an injustice? It may seem obvious to some but may be far from recognizable to others. John Rawlswas a political and moral philosopher that had his own views that helped shape the concepts of social justice. It does not appear that the oil industry was materially affected by the closing of the Nymex, which, in any event, resumed all operations in about one week. While the immediate effect of the attacks on petroleum markets was to drive prices up, market forces reflecting little change in supply and demand acted quickly, and crude oil prices eased within little more than a week. Average crude oil prices paid by U.S. refiners actually declined for the month of September 2001 falling to $20.82 per barrel from $24.08 in the previous month. 2002: After moving lower in 2001, crude oil prices moved higher in 2002 reaching over $30 per barrel in September 2002. Higher prices were supported by a number of factors. One was the ongoing U.S. war on terrorism and rising tensions with Iraq. There was the likely potential that military action would be taken against Iraq that would disrupt the supply of crude oil to the market. With that issue still not settled as 2002 drew to a close, crude oil prices continued to find support. While there were factors supporting higher prices, there were also factors working against them. Fayol s functions of management are as relevant today, just as they have been a century ago, both theoretically and practically. Though under harsh scrutiny by some theorists as an oversimplified theory of management, this essay argues that Fayol s functions are not just part of a grand theory, they form a basis for all managerial work. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Further, this explains how Fayol s functions can be suited to a variety of managerial and organisational contexts. It is the combinational property of flexibility and authority that make Fayol s four functions relevant today, even in a predominantly service economy. Managers today have had to learn to plan and organise better than before in order to offer services beyond the physical product, they had to learn to become stronger leaders in order to push away from traditional bricks and mortar markets and have had to learn to be controlling in ensuring a smooth transition. Furthermore, they allowed managers to become organisational experts, rather than skills experts, and hence the ability to work with large markets and economies than physical products and machinery (Pryor Taneja, 2010). In addition, these four functions have been so extensively used that management today is virtually synonymous with them, if not structured around them (Lamond, 2003). It is useful then, to see what happens when Fayol s functions are not observed, as in the case of the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDP). With all of this evidence of the negative impacts of these toxins, it shows the need to recognize these biotoxins as significant stressors within south west Florida coastal ecosystems. HABs in Florida have had a major impact on seabirds in the west Florida area. Seabirds that were admitted for rehabilitation in 2005 2006 after a severe bloom on the west coast of Florida showed signs of disorientation, inability to stand, and seizures. The four species that were most affected were the Double crested Cormorants, Brown Pelicans, Great Blue Herons, and Common Loons. Through blood and fecal samples taken from several of the seabirds during rehabilitation, it was found that the brevetoxin was expelled from their bodies within 5 19 after being admitted to the rehabilitation facility. Every character is linked and connected to the location of Highbury in some way. The limited social and geographical range does pose weaknesses in this active yet reserved village. Austen s recognition of flaws behind gossip, marriage and social status, provide readers delight and a sense of identification. Emma successfully stimulates awareness to the effects of isolation, and generates appreciation for our own social privileges and position. Austen creates a dynamic community through the way characters engage and behave against traditional and established conventions. Highbury s isolation from the rest of England suggests boredom and loneliness will simultaneously follow. Conversely, this lays the foundation for future drama and conflict to follow. One large source of gossip is stirred by the letter written from mysterious Frank Churchill to Mrs Weston. Such communication between Highbury and the outside makes this matter significant as Frank threatens the harmony and social order of Highbury. As a result every morning visit in Highbury included some mention of the handsome letter . The ability to listen and retell, is necessary for Emma s community in order to avoid the dull seclusion. To begin conceptualizing Antwone s feelings through an Adlerian lens, a counselor might try to spot inferiority feelings within the client. These feelings are always present and ultimately act as a motivating force behind an individual s outward behavior. One could argue that Antwone s inferiorities stem from the abuse he suffered at such a young age, which halted the average development most humans encounter. In order for an individual to overcome these inferiorities, they begin to act in compensative behaviors. Since Antwone s traumas began in infancy, he never had any kind of stable environment and the one in which he was finally placed (the Tate s) caused him to quickly feel inferior. Antwone may have ultimately developed an inferiority complex because he was never able to compensate his inferiority feelings as an infant. The inferiority complex that Antwone developed has prevented him from being able to cope with the demands of life enabling him to use violence as a way to forget. Alexander s childhood friend, Ptolemy, soon came to rule over the city and Alexandria began rising. Ptolemy had plans for the city and began building innovative roads and two sea harbors. With these new developments, authors note, the fundamental plan of the greatest city in the ancient world was complete. Houses, slaves, cattle, and taxpayers were being taken from surrounding villages and given to the capital city of Alexandria. When Ptolemy s son and successor (Ptolemy II) began his rule on the city, he, too, threw himself into developing Alexandria and created a currency that could be used to sell and trade. • 23. What Is Metaphors Used In The Gothic Novel These dark overtones and internal tensions laid the foundation perfectly for the development of the gothic novel. The fear of the unknown are represented in Radcliffe s gothic novel as the mystery surrounding the fates of other women. Once Emily has found out the truth about the other women, then she is freed of her fears and is able to cope with them. In a very real way she has made the transition to confidence in herself and her own future. This particular brand of gothic novel seems to be an encouragement to women and reassures them. Metaphors and Simile have been a part of the human experience since man began comparing and contrasting things to one another. Used by poets and novelists alike to express comparisons, these elements are extremely useful to the writer. Radcliffe manages to use metaphors to continue and round out the overall tone of the novel. This, too, is evident in the Vol. 2, ch. 5 example. As the landscape changes, she is evoking an implied metaphor stating that experience is constantly changing and that sometimes, if one is lucky, one will suddenly hit upon an inner truthor two, which comes as a result of the constant changing. Interestingly enough, Radcliffe also employs very Romantic Era techniques of utilizing nature to illustrate some of these truths, both inner and outer. Aphra Ben s Oroonoko and Daniel Defoe s Moll Flanders In his Dictionary of Literary Terms, Harry Shaw defines the novel: In effective narrative literature, fictional persons, through characterization, become so credible that they exist for the reader as real people, he says (1). Many eighteenth century British novelists neglected to earn this credibility. Looking specifically at Aphra Behn s Oroonoko and Daniel Defoes Moll Flanders, Shaw s definition becomes especially difficult to apply to Moll and Oroonoko s narrator. While the novels should not be declared unsuccessful in their entireties, perhaps the sincerity claimed in both introductions only lessens their overall believability. In the opening lines of his preface, Defoe tells us, the Author is here suppos d to be writing her own History (1). Behn makes a similar claim in his novel: I was myself an eyewitness to a great part, of what you will find here set down, and what I could not be witness of, I received from the mouth of the chief actor in this history, the hero himself (75). And soon the authors claims prove themselves to be untrue with a sizeable lack of reality in their characterization. Perhaps we cannot blame the authors themselves, but rather their time. Serving as the inventors of the realist novel, eighteenth century writers like Aphra Behn and Daniel Defoe were without a foundation to follow and with the development of characters that are perhaps too unique, situations idealized, and blatant claims of truthfulness, thus fail to convince the ... However, Williams s characters in A StreetCar Named Desire crucially succumb to the prescribed genderroles where the women are expected to be meekly obedient in a patriarchal society ruled by the opposite sex. Top Girls is set in the early 1980 s, and mainly plays with two main concerns travelling around the 1980 s feminism and socialism. We unravel a great number of ideas within the novel that mirror the characters rejection of their gender roles. The theme in Top Girls is mostly addressing the ideologies around feminism at a significant time. This is portrayed in a direct manner and tone which veer from bizarre and dreamlike to mundane and give us an insight of the contemporary events going on outside of the play. The time this play was written holds high importance as it was the time of power dressing and was a real up lift for women struggling for identity in modern society. • 29. The Qr Transformation Protects The Upper Hessenberg Type... The QR transformation protects the upper Hessenberg type of the first matrix, and the workload on such a matrix is O(n2) per cycle as restricted to O(‪n3) on a general framework. As s tends to infinity, the original matrix merges to a structure where the eigenvalues are either segregated on the corner to corner or are eigenvalues of a 2 Г— 2 sub matrix on the diagonal. Thus, we can see that the QR transformation reduces the complexity and the number of iterations. QR is one of the mostly used algorithms for finding the eigenvalues of a matrix, where Q represents an orthogonal matrixand R an upper triangular one, R comes from right. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬†Now we consider a non singular matrix with real entries, either symmetrical or not. In essence, the QR algorithm is based on the following property: If A is factorized in the product A=QR, where Q is non singular, then the matrix of the product in reverse order, A =RQ, has the same eigenvalues as A has (having similarity with A). The invention of the QR algorithm The QR transformation was introduced in the late 1950s by John G.F. Francis (England) [6] and by Vera N. Kublanovskaya (USSR) [7], working separately. Hexane And Toluene Lab Report Jessie Nalley 24 October 2017 Sailajah Gukathasan Fractional Distillation of Hexane and Toluene Aim/Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to separate and purify the liquid components of a mixture with a known composition using a technique called fractional distillation. In order to do so, a liquid mixture is separated into three fractions in the first distillation; then, one of the fractions produced is redistilled to increase the purity of the liquid. Since two rounds of distillation occur, the process is termed fractional distillation. Additionally, it is crucial for students to understand the principles of gas chromatography so the purity and percent composition of each fraction can be determined. Theory: The basis for this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Theoretical plates represent the stage in which two phases, such as the liquid and vapor phase of a substance, establish equilibrium with one another. Thus, since the Hickman still has a short column and a complete separation of hexane and toluene cannot be achieved in one cycle, there are two theoretical plates in this experiment: one from the original distillation where three fractions are recovered, and one from the redistillation of one of the fractions to produce more pure portions. This experiment involves the separation of a solution containing hexane and toluene. These compounds meet the criteria mentioned above since their boiling points are approximately 40В°C apart (hexane: 69В°C; toluene: 111В°C). During the first distillation, the liquid mixture is separated into three fractions. These three fractions must be collected at the specific temperature ranges shown below: Desired Composition Temperature Range Mostly Hexane 60В° 70В°C Equal Portions of Hexane and Toluene 75В° 85В°C Mostly Toluene 85В° 105В°C The phase diagram of hexane and toluene depicts the relationship between temperature and the mole fraction of the mixture, revealing that as the mole fraction of hexane and toluene changes, the boiling point of the mixture changes as well. Alice s Adventures in Wonderland Is Alice s Adventures in Wonderland as absurd and nonsensical as it seems to be without any traces of morals hiding underneath the bizarre shaped tea cups and crooked smiles? Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, written by an English author in 1865 under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, contains obscurities that leave people uncertain due to the nonsense. The novel holds many obscurities, such as a disappearing Cheshire Cat, a personified rabbit, and a caterpillar who smokes from a hookah. These characters hold a common feature of madness, yet the nonsense of this novel relates to the nonsense of Lowell High School, a public school that piles bricks of pressure on their students leading them to madness. Although, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland contains a series of puzzles that seem unsolvable, it symbolizes a strong foundation that helps Lowell High School ninth graders gain knowledge about surviving the competitive school. Out of the whimsical growth changes of Alice, a ninth grader learns to present themselves as their true self. • 49. Middle School And High School Growing up I had one favorite class, that class, surprisingly, was English. I was born in Zacatecas, Mexico on May 9th, 1998 and was brought to the United States at the age of two. When my parents tried to enroll me into a pre kindergarten program they were told that it was unnecessary because I was way beyond my age group. My parents told me that it was from all of the Scooby Doo shows I watched growing up. When kindergarten arrived, I was still forced to take an English Learners class so I could get the best help that I could get to improve my English skills. I remember sitting in that class watching all the other students have a difficult time pronouncing simple words that they should be able to say by now. I stayed in that class until... The school year started with me disliking her, I thought she was extremely rude and was just cranky all the time. In her class is where I read my first Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet she made that unit extremely amusing. She had us split into families and we would have battles, they consisted of games and quizzes. I was Lord Capulet and my team won of course. After 10th grade she became my advisory teacher in 12th grade. She easily became one of my favorite teachers that constantly teased me on my obsession with Adele. The teacher that made the biggest impact in my life was Mrs. Marn. She was an extremely caring teacher, she did not like watching her students fail. She made sure that everyone had everything they needed to be successful. She was, I believe, one of the best English teacher Brooklyn Center High School has ever had. Her passion for books were out of this world. She talked about authors as if though she has met them. She reminded me of a hippie in some sorts. She was very open with us and I was close to her. She was my teacher for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. I read, The Catcher in The Rye in her class and she tore that book up piece by piece, explaining every motive and how innocence is huge part of that book. She was my teacher for the college in the schools courses that I took. I felt like I failed her in those classes, she expected way more of me and I did not perform to ... • 50. Why The World Should Justify Jerusalem As Israel s Capital In 1967, the Israelites captured Jerusalem during the Six Day War and named it as their capital. However, to this day countries around the world still don t recognize it as Israel s capital because of the conflict between Jews and Palestinians claiming it as their own. Recently, former president Donald Trump made an announcement saying that the United States would move their embassy to Jerusalemand recognize it as Israels capital. There are strong arguments and many reasons as to why the world should recognize Jerusalem as Israel s capital. Throughout history, there is Biblical and Non Biblical evidence that Jerusalem belongs to the Israelites. They have lived in Jerusalem for more than 3,000 years and then claimed Jerusalem again as their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. Indigenous Education And Bilingual Education By the late 70s, the government had moved towards a hybrid system of having bilingual educators use indigenous language in primary schools to teach the national Spanish based curriculum with Spanish materials (Hamel, Indigenous Education 275). After failing once again to produce positive educational outcomes, the government moved to a bilingual and bicultural model in the 80s, then an intercultural one in the 90s that is still in use today (Hamel, Indigenous Education 275). In 1991, the Mexican constitution was amended to explicitly recognize indigenous rights for the first time by promising to protect and promote the development of [indigenous] languages [and] cultures (Hamel, Indigenous Education 276). This right was further elaborated... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A study on bilingualism and income found some negative correlation between speaking an indigenous language and income. On average, male monolingual Spanish speakers earn 23% more than bilinguals and monolingual speakers of indigenous languages, with no significant difference between the income levels of the last two groups (Chiswick, Patrinos, and Hurst 350). Effects were more pronounced in their female counterparts: monolingual female Spanish speakers earned about 28% more than bilinguals who, in turn, earned 25% more than monolingual indigenous language speakers (Chiswick, Patrinos, and Hurst 350). However, there is no indication that learning an indigenous language was the cause for this disparity. In fact, class was a much better predictor of income and success than language of education (Chiswick, Patrinos, and Hurst 364). Still, indigenous parents often believe that formally learning an indigenous language will not give their children a competitive edge in the modern economy (Chiswick, Patrinos, and Hurst 364). Specifically, they point to the fact that, when given the chance to send their children to bilingual institutions, the majority of non indigenous people including many bilingual teachers and activists for indigenous language education send their children to schools that teach English or French (Garcia, Politics 79). Yet, these arguments made by indigenous parents are often discredited by activists, who attribute the reluctance to participate in bilingual programs to the fact that the parents themselves are uneducated and do not know what is best for themselves, their children, and their communities (Garcia, Politics ...
