2. Pop Song Riptide
Riptide is an awesome indie folk and indie pop song with a fun riff, beachy feel, steady tempo
and very is unique to other songs. It was created by Vance Joy, who had been working on the
song for about four years. He started in 2008, and during an interview, he had said, The words
came to me without meaning, although a few lyrics relate to his personal life, such as I was
scared of dentists and the dark, I was scared of pretty girls and starting conversations, where he
was actually a shy kid, but the he liked the literation dentists and the dark and thought it worked
well. Closest thing to Michelle Pfeiffer that you ve ever seen, was because he really likes
Michelle Pfeiffer, and cowboy running from himself was from the movie, Midnight Cowboy. These
lyrics, which seem to have no meaning, have actually became very catchy, and could get stuck in
your head for days. Some people have thought it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was released in September 5, 2014, in Australia, and on September 9 worldwide. The album
had peaked at one in Australia, two in the US and in Canada, and 20 in the UK. They have sold
over 3,000,000 units over the span of three years since it came out. This song has really stood
out from other songs because of how people can interpret the song their way. Some can think of
the lyrics as just gibberish, but others have believed it to be a story. One person thought of it as
his best friend became rich, left her, and now he is getting angry. Another thought it was a guy
writing a love song to a girl he wants to ask out. People can turn the song into whatever they want it
to mean, as there is so many ways that you can understand the song, which makes it different.
Riptide is a very interesting, fun song with great melody, musical hook, intriguing lyrics, with a
strong beat, and I highly recommend this song to anyone who is interested in different, unique

3. Columbine And Sandy Hook Pop Up
When thinking about school shootings names like Columbine and Sandy Hook pop up. Those
are the most tragic by far, however everyone always ask why such a horrible crime happens, but
no one has never stopped and researched why such hate crimes like those happen. Instead people
resort to Channel 2 or Fox 5 for answers, not realizing that their story isn t the full truth. I am
truly against school shootings; looking for answers myself. If there s one thing I ve picked up
from the media is how they portray school shootings with mental illness, but according to
Alfred.edu/teen violence says, They want to get back at those who hurt them or revenge. Many
adults always struggled to realize why things as vigorous as shootings happens; also fail to
realize they are the start of something so tragic. There are several reasons that lead to a school
shooting but only five are common. Revenge as Justin Nutt states, Is pure hatred showed to
relieve stress. (Nutt, J. Dec 14). Many articles tend to base their beliefs over school shootings on
revenge, because of the age and choice of a crime. These crimesare not random; are particularly
committed by an older age male seeking to let go of some type of stress. You can even use the
Florida State shooting in 2014 as an example, The FSU shooter was dealing with emotional and
physiological problems. (Rossman, S., Etters, K.) The student was a former FSU graduate who was
attending law school at Texas Tech University; was staying with a

4. The generation gap in King Lear by Shakespeare
One of the underlying themes in Shakespeare s play, King Lear is the concept of the generation
gap. This gap is mainly illustrated between the family. The older generation is Lear himself, and the
younger generation consists of his daughters Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. In the second plot of the
play, Gloucester represents the older generation, and his sons, Edmundand Edgar exemplifies the
younger generation. Both younger generations can be divided into two distinct groups. Goneril,
Regan and Edmund are the villains in both the plots and Edgar and Cordelia are the loyal, faithful
children. This little twist adds to the effect of the generation gap in the play. There are many
comparisons that can be made and confrontations that occur... Show more content on

It is apparent that the younger generation is motivated by greed, power and lust. This potentially
made them more cunning and ruthless in their actions by exploiting the older generation s
vulnerability. Edmund s desire for Edgar s half of the inheritance, shows how benevolent a human
being can be. In Edmund s soliloquy in the beginning of[Act 1 scene 2] he planned to betray both
his father and half brother by forging a letter describing Edgar s intentions on Gloucester s
inheritance. Upon showing this letter to the gullible Gloucester, he ordered to have a contract out
for Edgar s head.
The daughters Goneril and Regan are inspired by their hunger for power and their lust for
Edmund. Once Goneril and Regan received their land, they immediately showed no respect to
Lear, who gave them the land. In [Act 1 scene 4] Goneril instructs her servant Oswald to show
utter disrespect for Lear. Oswald complies and enrages Lear. Soon Lear will find that his two
daughters have no loyalties to him.
As it turns out, there is no loyalties within each other. In [Act 5 scene 3] Goneril has poisoned her
own sister, in hopes of capturing Edmund s love. However, Edgar and Cordelia are exceptions to
this generalization. Their actions are very noble and they show great amounts of integrity. In the
beginning of [Act 4 scene 1] Gloucester has decided to end his own life. Edgar, knowing his father
s intentions,

5. Country Music Has Gone Through Many Phases Of Different...
Country music has gone through many phases of different musical styles including the honky tonk
style and more modern pop country style. More recently, mainstream country has continued to
define itself through bringing all these different styles together and relying on each of them. This
genre of music faces issues relating to its original classification as being working class music ,
being in opposition to homosexuality and its portrayal and absence of women. Often times I have
heard people say that they prefer all genres of music, except country. Growing up I always listened
to country musicdue to the fact that my mom and our family friends often listen to it, therefore I
never understood why it unveiled such a negative reaction for most people. Oftentimes I find
myself excluding my enjoyment of country music to others simply to avoid their surprised
reactions. While I realize how people may be closed off to country music because of the labels
that have been imposed upon it in common discourse and media, I often would like to point out
that modern country music that is played on the radio today is often very different from more
traditional country music played many years ago, and is not that much different from pop and rock
sounds. These issues of class divide, homosexuality and the role of women must be looked upon in
relation to contemporary country music, which can be considered a more relevant discussion. From
country music s roots stemming from Folk and Blues

6. The Classical Types Of Love
Love is a special emotion that most individuals strives for. Part of a human s nature is to love and
long for another individual. This feeling has existed since the beginning and will continue to exist
until the end. The term love, however, is very broad. To understand more easily what the term
means, the Ancient Greeks came up with three terms to symbolize the three main types of love. The
three classical types of love are very important to understand, as they will continue to exist until the
world ends. The selected poems read reflect three classical types of love.
One type of love that is present in the selected poems is agape love. Agape love is an
unconditional love that is all about sacrifice. Agape love in the highest ... Show more content on

The speaker in this poem shows the highest form of agape love by offering the sacrifice of his
life to defend his country, to which he honors all. Another type of love that is important within
the selected poems is storge love. Storge love is a type of love between family and friends. Two
examples of this kind of love are what parents naturally feel for their children or the love that
friends feel for each other. This kind of love also contains commitment and sacrifice. Storge love
is portrayed heavily in Shakespeare s Sonnet 116. In the poem, Shakespeare explains that love is
not just an object or something that can be played with, but rather it is a commitment one makes to
one they love. He also says that love never alters or withers through a relationship s ups and downs.
Shakespeare writes,
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
Oh, no! it is an ever fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth s unknown, although his height be taken. (ll. 1 8)
Shakespeare uses a metaphor in line seven as he uses a star as an object to follow. He uses the
star to suggest that love is a guide, and that lovers can look to. Shakespeare makes it very clear
that storge love is very passionate, serious, and not to be taken lightly. As written in this poem,
storge love is unconditional

8. Grant s Strategy For Union Victory Over Frederick The...
without concert, like a balky team, no two ever pulling together. Further, Grant wrote, that Union
forces had seventeen distinct commanders. Before this time these various armies had acted
separately and independently of each other, giving the enemy an opportunity often of depleting
one command, not pressed, to reinforce another more actively engaged. I determined to stop
this. Grant then immediately provided for a coordinated simultaneous advance of all forces with
the main armies strengthened as much as possible by reducing subsidiary forces previously
cordoned for defensive purposes. While he may not have been intentionally channeling Jominian
ideas, Grant s strategy for Union victory has been compared by historians with the Jominian
prescription for victory over Frederick the Great. Since the Confederates were vigorous in
applying the principle of concentration on successive lines of operations in order to defeat Union
forces, Grant s strategy had to be directed to preventing these Confederate concentrations. Grant s
strategy was founded on nullifying the South s principal means of defense, the Jominian shifting
of forces successively from one line of operations to another. Grant, in fact, was applying Jomini s
prescription for victory by Daun over Frederick coordination, and an invasion into the heart of his
states. Grant s plans concentrated on two lines of operations, Virginia and Georgia, and looked for
success on only one of them. To prevent Lee

invested by the below parties: * Synenergy Diversified Capital committed capital of $6.25
million * Opportunity Capital Corporation $150,000 * Opportunity Capital Partners $600,000
The $7 million is in the form of subordinated debentures that matures in 7 years with an interest
rate of 13%. This rate is very high because subordinated debentures investors bear significantly
more risk, which is a major drawback of this form of investment since the debt might not be
repaid. The biggest benefit for Dogloo to issue subordinated debenture is that the subordination
makes the debt being accounted in the company s equity based on the balance sheet. This
effectively improves the company s leverage ratios and allows the company to obtain future loans
more easily. Analysis Return on Investment OCC and OCP together invested $750,000 into
Dogloo in the form of subordinated debenture with 13% interest rate, which guarantees them
stable interest cash inflows each year (Exhibit 4). The two investors combined ownership interest
will be 0.5% of the Dogloo s equity value because the company s equity valuation is $213 million,
exceeding $80 million; this will be the cash inflow at exit for the investors. Through calculation,
the required equity value at exit is $238 million if the investors have an estimated IRR of 25%

10. Quebec City Research Paper
So I`ve finally left Quebec and I am currently in Scottsdale, Arizona. However, I felt I needed to
do one more article on Quebec that covers some of the amazing places you need to go and
checkout outside of the city. One of the best ways to check out the countryside is to rent a car or
take a tour. Renting a car is nice because it gives you the choice to decide where you want to go
and how long you want to be somewhere. The road signs in written in French can be intimidating
for some though, especially without someone helping you navigate. We opted for a tour because we
liked the structure and didn`t have to worry about getting lost. So without further ado let s jump in!
My favorite place outside of Quebec city has to be Montmorency Falls. Montmorency Falls are
taller than Niagra Falls by about thirty meters, but Niagra Falls is wider. I personally love
Montmorency because of the suspension bridge right above the falls which give you an amazing

CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF VOLKSWAGEN COURT SETTLEMENT
Although many individuals are unaware of the TDI diesel emissions court settlement between
Volkswagen and their customers; there are two causes and several effects. John German discovered
the Volkswagen emissions scandal. It turns out that, the lawsuit came about due to cheating
software that Volkswageninstalled in their 2.0 and 3.0 liter diesel vehicles. In turn, a few effects of
the cheating software resulted in a 14.7 billion dollar lawsuit between Volkswagen and their buyers,
disappointed customers, and huge inconveniences (Bartlett,2017). Due to the software installed in
TDI diesel vehicles, there are up to 11 million vehicles affected.
In May of 2014, John German discovered, and went public about the Volkswagen emissions scandal
(Kretchmer, 2015). John German is a senior co lead for the International Council on Clean
Transportation. Mr. German has worked for the Washington based Environmental Protection
Agency for 13 years, which indicates that he knows what the requirements and enforcement are.
German partnered with West Virginia University and conducted the ICCT study. During the ICCT
study, German noticed detrimental nitrogen oxide emission levels; which leads him to think
Volkswagen diesel cars were malfunctioning. German felt vehicles were malfunctioning because
they were passing emissions testing, yet the vehicles had up to 35 times permitted levels of nitrogen
oxide.

14. Mergers and Acquisitions
Mergers and Acquisitions In modern business environments, there are increasing dynamics
encouraging firms to utilize mergers and acquisitions to resolve resource. In dynamic business
environments, the value of existing resources is subject to erosion, in some instances fast
erosion. Consequently, firms continuously respond to changing environmental conditions by
upgrading their resources and capabilities via renewal, acquisition, redeployment, and
recombination. Mergers and acquisitions provide firms with a practical tool to close their
resource gaps, allowing for a much faster reconfiguration of the product mix toward high profit
products than, for example, internal development (Eschen and Bresser, 2005). The need for
corporate firms to achieve competitive advantage in a highly competitive global environment
has necessitated the implementation of innovative strategies, one of them being mergers and
acquisitions (Rizvi, 2010). Mergers and acquisitions have become an increasingly popular
strategy for achieving corporate growth and diversification, with the M A activity in the 1990 s
smashing all existing records, both in terms of the number of transactions and the size of the
deals. The worldwide value of M A increased from $462 billion in 1990 to over $3.5 trillion in

are not always considered. Divorce has become a debatable topic because of the loss of family

At one time people got married and stayed together for better or for worse. Society frowned on
divorce, and divorced people were likely to find themselves as social outcasts. The problem with
most relationships today is that they are disposable whether intimate or casual. If it does not work
out, you find someone else. The reasons for divorce vary. Some research suggests that women s
increasing labor force participation, access to higher education, and higher salaries make them less
willing to put up with traditional roles and expectations (Yodanis, 2005). Other common reasons for
divorce are lack of communication or commitment, infidelity, abuse (physical or emotional), and
financial problems. Before the divorce is even final, most relationships go through a process.
During the course of the marriage, one or both of the partners begins to feel alienated from the
other. Conflicts with each other intensify, become more frequent, and often go unresolved.
Feelings of bitterness, helplessness, and anger escalate as each spouse re evaluates their well
being and happiness. According to the American Counseling Association (ACA), the number one
reason for divorce is the breakdown in communication (ACA, 2010). Divorces often happen
because people rarely discuss their expectations in detail prior to marriage, are less willing to work
on their marriages afterwards, and would like quick solutions rather than having to resolve issues.

PSEUDO MODERNITY
According to The Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket), in 2016, Norrköping was the
biggest receiver of asylum seekers in the county of Östergötland. Statistics and figures in
themselves can be perceived as intimidating and heavy, and viewing newcomers as a single large
group can be scary.
However, people are from all walks of life, no different from you and I. Ignorance only breeds
fear and hate, but curiosity brings understanding and awareness. For that reason and because their
specific experiences hinge on the intersection of being both LGBTQ+ and a newcomer, this
article focuses on queer newcomers in Norrköping. In collaboration with RFSL, Norrköping
Pride and the Swedish Migration Board, several interviews were conducted with both newcomers
and people working with them. Sweden has an international reputation for being progressive and

Still, LGBTQ+ newcomers usually cannot be fully open with their sexual identities in their
countries of origin as it is often considered a criminal offense. To then expect a newcomer to be
openly queer from first contact is a high demand that many cannot meet primarily due to feelings of
shame. The lack of trust can lead them to apply as non LGBTQ+. Our interviewees testify to
feeling questioned and not fully trusted in the contact with the Migration

Design elements are important because of the part that scenery, costuming, and lighting plays in the
movement of the musical production. As Richard Kislan says, the ultimate objective of the
designer of musicals must be to service the moving forms that characterize the musical theater.
(Kislan 251). As a member of the audience I never recognize the movement of the scenery but
enjoy each new set and costume. Without those important changes of movement the audience
might lose interest or feel lost in a long musical. Musicals are full of costume changes that signify
an important event in a character s plot. A good example is My Fair Lady, where Eliza Doolittle
begins the musical with nothing more but rags and a small weary basket of flowers.

could not digest an autotrophic bacterium; there is evidence suggesting that this bacterium was

eukaryote provided protection and nutrients to the prokaryote, and in return the prokaryotic

respiratory cellular mechanism. In the long run this became a permanent arrangement in

20. Human Nature In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness
Joseph Conrad s incredibly erudite, and lengthy prose in his, Heart of Darkness, challenges the
reader to scrutinize human nature in all walks of life. While written in 1899, Heart of Darkness
still serves to be a novella for the ages. With exceptional flexibility to a numerous amount of human
issues Conrad s novella is easily paralleled with countless contemporary affairs; reaching from
international, national, social, and personal matters (Conrad). Not only recently, but for many years
we have been fighting in the middle east. Very recently, militants of the Islamic State executed
seventy civilians in a Syrian town (Deeb, abcnews.com). As Conrad explores humankind s evil
innate desires in the Heart of Darknessthrough violence, hypocrisy, and our interior world one can
straightforwardly connect such acts with behaviors articulated in Syriathese past couple days. This

hardihood, greedy without audacity, and cruel without courage; there was not an atom of

things are wanted for the work of the world. To tear treasure out of the bowels of the land was

25. Assess the contribution of social action theory to our...
For years, social action theorists have sought out to understand how society operates. Unlike
structuralists for example Marxists, action theorists are a micro level approach where they find the
study of the individual and their interactions within society more important to our understanding.
Action theorists are more voluntaristic, they believe that individuals possess agency where they
have the ability to be free agents in themselves and in shaping society.
Max Weber is well known within sociology as one of the founding fathers. He believes that over
generalisation should be avoided as much as possible and we should understand human action,
hence social action theory . Weber contributed four ideal types that should be used to study... Show

Other critics such as Ethnomethodologists argue that interactionists fail to explain how actors create
the meanings of the symbols.
Phenomenologists like Ethnomethodologists believe there is not social structure out there but it is
a social construct made by the individuals. Phenomenologist, Husserl argues that the society we
live in is a product of our mind because we get information from mental acts that are categories we
use to group information and give them meaning. Schutz uses this idea and argues it applies to
how people share them in society. Using the term typification Schutz, explains how people have
shared meanings of particular social contexts. These are agreed upon to stabilise and clarify within
a social interaction as commonsense knowledge and without these social order would not be
possible.
Luckmann argues against Schutz rejecting his view that society is only an inter subjective reality.
Luckmann points out that Schutz sees all of society socially constructed by individuals that create
the society which then takes on a life of its own. Luckman sees Schutz as failing to see the the
structures in society that constrain us to become an individual in society, for example laws in the
Catholic Church about homosexual relations.

RENOVATING IDEAS TO INCREASE HOUSE VALUE
Whenever individuals do a house renovation, the majority of them expect to bring a good looking
value from the reselling of the house, while this may not often be the case, some elements have to
be thought about prior to one does a remodel. The most important variable has to be comparing the
cost of the remodelling compared to that of the value, this comes in handy when making a decision
no matter if the investment would be worth it. When we are performing remodeling to our homes,
our main element is always to increase the value, and below are some ideas on how the value
might be boosted.

27. The Controversy Of Aliens
The topic of aliens is often a very controversial one to talk about. The aliens in THE FOURTH
KIND represent many fears that we have has as humans such as the fear of feeling inferior. That
is why many people don t like to acknowledge that there could possibly be other intellectual
species outside of earth, due to the fear of them feeling inferior to a more advanced life form. If
aliens are anything like the humanspecies then we should all be afraid, due to the fact that the
human race killed most of the animal species and even kidnapped and enslaved other humans. If
extraterrestrials ever came to our planet, their technology and intellect would be far more
advanced than ours and that could possibly hurt humanity because they could have the power
and technology to enslave us. They also represent how people would be willing to do wicked
things like using science and technology for malevolent purposes. The aliens abuse of power in
the film reflect how humans could possibly turn out if we obtained their technology. Humans
could learn to one day build rockets and spacecraft s that can travel to other planets and their
main goal would be to use these technologies to benefit ourselves. If we had the power to overtake
another planet and inhabit it, we would not hesitate to do so and we are willing to do the
unthinkable for power and advancement. Aliens also represent the fear of there being no god or

28. Old Chief Mshlanga Character Analysis
For some, coming of age is a time of obstacles and success in a young youth s life. It involves a
number of trials that is needed to overcome to become mature. Although, obstacles are not the
only features that a young adolescents will encounter. The journey will happen beginning with
successes and triumphs that will come to the shaping of who they are to become. One can
simply presume that the occurrence taking place in the world would have a strong impact on
how an adolescent comes of age. The tale Old Chief Mshlanga focuses on the main character,
the protagonist known as she or little Nkosikaas her encounter with an African chieftain that
causes her to see the differences between her people and the natives of the land they reside. The
author, Doris Lessing, uses the protagonist to show radically changing attitudes towards the Old
Chief Mshlanga. At the age of fourteen, the nameless protagonist meets Old Chief Mshlanga on
a walk with her dogs, a native tribal leader who used to own the whole area. The chief s pride
and respect make the girl gingerly change her opinion of natives and reconsider her prejudiced
vision and idea. As a result, she begins to be more pleasant towards the natives she encounters.
The girl s inner characterization resembles a coming of age character. She develops because of the
action and her traits as a child are presented in contrast with her traits as a teenager. This contrast is

For this proposal, I interviewed the Surrey Salvation Army Thrift Store manager, Narmada

program through donations. My interview consisted of questions such as (1) Do you get enough
donations to fulfil store target? (2) Approximately how many donations you get per day? (3) Are
all the donations in good condition to resell? (4) if not, what are the difficulties you have been
facing? (5) How much money spend on the garbage pickup truck?

of them are going to recycle bins and some unwanted donations end up in their garbage bins. By
virtue of this, their garbage spending has gone up as it does not take much longer to pile up. She
stated that the store alone spends between $900 to $1000 money on dumping their overflowing

31. The Psychosocial Theory Of Life Span Development
Developmental Analysis
Melissa Snyder
Liberty University
Abstract
Life span development, and ultimately who we are and become as a person, is influenced by
many different things that include biologic, cognitive, and socio emotional factors. These
different areas of development can be positively or negatively affected by environmental factors
and stressors. If those negative environmental factors are not dealt with by the time a person
reaches adulthood, there is a likelihood that the person will develop dysfunctional personalities
and struggle to maintain healthy relationships. According to Eric Erickson, those positive and
negative environmental factors influence the individual s development differently when it is
experienced during a particular stage of development. Erickson s psychosocial theory of
development asserts that there are eight stages of development that each person passes through
over the course of their life. Each stage has a specific goal that can be attained by resolving
particular conflicts. This conflict resolution will result in a healthy, well balanced individual. This
paper will look at each stage of Erickson s psychosocial theory of life span development and how it
applies to my own development.
Erik Erikson s theory of psychosocial development was greatly influenced by Freud and his
psychoanalytic theory. Both Freud and Erikson believed that the life span included distinct stages

with e books.
In this report, we are further going to discuss about the main part in which we will look at the
ways that gives the more edge to printed books in comparison to e books for student learning.
According to a new study, 92% of college students would rather do their reading the old fashioned
way, with pages and not pixels. The finding comes from American University linguistics professor
Naomi S. Baron, author of the book Words Onscreen: The Fate of Reading in a Digital World.
Baron led a team that asked 300 college students in the United States, Slovakia, Japan and
Germany how they preferred to read. Physical books were the choice of 92% of the respondents,
who selected paper over an array of electronic devices . (Schaub, 2016)
Steven Hernandez, a student at Arizona State University is among those who prefer reading the
real McCoy over files on a gadget. I believe that the possibility and likelihood of distraction is too
high when it comes to online learning tools like textbooks, he wrote in an op ed for his student
newspaper. The upside to e books is the low price and the user interaction that it enables, but it
requires integration and education of the technology being used integration that students like
myself are not accustomed to .

Amorite Kings that are discovered and then trapped in a cave. The kings hide in a cave in
Makkedah. Joshua finds where the kings are hiding and then proceeds to give instructions regarding
what to do with the kings. They trap the kings in the cave. Joshua proceeds to tell his troops to
continue fighting. Joshua and the Israelites defeat their enemies; there are few survivors left and
the army returns to their leader, Joshua. Joshua then uses the defeat of the five kings as an object
lesson for his commanders. They open the cave, in which the Kings are trapped in, the kings are

their feet on the King s neck. The commanders do so and Joshua tells his men, Do not be
discouraged. Be strong and courageous. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you

evening. At sunset Joshua gave orders to take down the poles and throw them into the cave in

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) of 1993 was an attempt to protect religious
minorities like the American Indian Movement. Sherbert v Verner and Employment Division v
Smith were two cases which led to the adoption of this legislation. Employment Division v Smith
was decided when two Native Americans used ceremonial peyote, were fired and were unable to
collect unemployment because they were fired for a drug offense or workplace misconduct. The
Supreme Court opinion said that the State could deny unemployment benefits to employees fired
for this offense, even if it was a part of a religious ceremony. Thus, the 1993 law attempted to
protect people like these Native Americans. The RFRA tried to protect Native Americans by saying
that the government may not substantially burden a person s free exercise of religionunless the
government has a compelling interest and the means used are the least intrusive. This law intended
to protect citizens from too much government interference in their religious practices. However,

39. Analysis Of The Omnivores Dilemma
The Omnivores Dilemma a book written by Michael Pollan, where he asks a very
straightforward question of what we should have for dinner. In the first chapter, titled The Plant
, tells a story from the perspective of Pollan himself as an everyday shopper in a modern day
American supermarket. Pollan brings up the fact that from a naturalist s perspective our grocery
stores are absolutely astonishing, because where else are you going to find an array of different
cultured foods in just one store. He then goes on to pose a question: Do you really even know
where the foodyou eat comes from? Pollan decided to do some digging of his own, seeing if any
completely opposite foods had anything in common. To his surprise, a lot of these diverse foods
did have something in common when it came to ingredient and it was corn. From finding out
that information he goes on to compare Americans consumption of corn, to Mexicans
consumption of corn. Pollan s findings show that Americans do in fact consume more corn than
our neighbors to the south, Mexico. This first chapter really made me think about how much,
we Americans, consume corn (or some derivative of corn) and if there is a healthier option to
choose from. So my question that I must ask is: why is corn a more efficient and beneficial
option than any other plant, and is there a plant that would be a better option? Growing up in
Nebraska I can tell you that I have ingested my fair amount of corn and corn based products, I
mean we are the Cornhuskers after all. But what is so special about corn? I ask this question
because I want to know what is so special about corn and why is it in almost anything and
everything we eat. America s agriculture is vast in the many types of plants that are planted and
harvested every year, such as soybeans and wheat that are also used as an ingredient in many of
our foods that we consume every day. When trying to answer this question I had to do some of
my own investigative work, just as Pollan did when finding out all he could find out about corn. I
researched the most grown grains in America, since corn is a grain, and to no surprise, it was corn
but the second majorly grown crop that we Americans plant was soybeans. From there I

Ethics are what separates civilized men from savages, driving their decisions, and determining
their destiny. The actions of both Dionysius and Socrates, in both Bacchae and Phaedrus
respectively, are driven by their personal ethics and beliefs in justice. Bacchae, a Greek tragedy
written by Euripides, tells the story of the Greek God Dionysus s arrival to ancient city of Thebes,

Dionysius here is essentially listing the injustices he as suffered by the city of Thebes,
promising to make undo any harm he causes after being accepted, warns that his rejection will
result in his wrath, and finally disguises himself as preacher to find willing followers. Dionysius
views on justice are what separates him from the other gods, in that he acknowledges the harm
his actions will bring to Thebes, promising to undo all the damage upon their acceptance of him,
while most of the other gods would leave after satisfying their quest for vengeance. The most
important line in this quote is the last sentence I ve transformed myself, assumed a mortal shape,

follow him out of their own free will, rather than forcing or scaring the people into compliance.

achieve justice for the defamation of his mother, and be worshiped by other, but is forced to make

Employees maintain a display that showcases a picture and small biography of each fellow worker

United Airlines provided mobilized reservists with retirement pension contributions that were too
small, calculating the amount based on a minimum wage for union employees rather than the
employees actual salaries preceding deployment, according to a lawsuit filed by the employees

examples of Tort Law and negligence because they cared more about making more profit off

Antitrust laws are a collection of laws and regulations, put into place over time, to help govern the
competiveness of large corporations. Enforced by the Federal Trade Commission and the Antitrust
Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) ( Antitrust Laws, 2003), the laws help regulate
ethical behavior between businesses to ensure that smaller businesses can compete with the bigger
name corporations. Mergers and monopolies come into play and greatly affect how these
businesses run. This paper will look at two different instances of possible violated laws and discuss
the specifics. The first case deals with a pharmaceutical company, the second two
telecommunications companies. One question being answered for both examples is what kind of
ethical dilemmas are present. Read on as the cases are examined. Federal antitrust enforcers are
investigating whether a multinational pharmaceutical company has attempted to minimize the
impact of generic competition to one of its most profitable prescription drugs. This antidepressant
drug is the company s best seller, with sales last year of $2.11 billion, representing a 22% increase
from the year before. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is conducting an investigation to
determine whether the company engaged in activities to prevent generic alternatives to the
prescription drug from entering the market. Specifically, the FTC is challenging a practice among
brand name and generic drugmanufacturers to agree to

Planned Parenthood vs. Casey (1992) In Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, a Supreme Court case
which took place in 1992, five provisions of the Pennsylvania Abortion Control Act of 1982 were
being challenged as unconstitutional under another case, Roe vs. Wade. Roe Vs. Wade was the
case that first recognized a constitutional right to abortion a legal liberty under a clause in the
Fourteen Amendment. The five provisions being challenged were the informed consent rule, the
spousal notification requirement, the parental consent rule, a 24 hour waiting period, and
imposition of certain reporting requirements on abortion facilities. The informed consent rule

The two sides of this case were the plaintiffs, who were five abortion clinics and doctors who
provided abortion services, and the defendant, which was the state of Pennsylvania. The plaintiffs
filed suit to have the state declare the five provisions unconstitutional. During the appeal in the
Third Circuit Court, the court upheld all but the husband notification requirement.
Casey is a divided judgement because none of the Justices opinions were joined by a majority of
Justices. However, the plurality decision, which was written by Justices Souter, O Connor, and
Kennedy, is accepted a the lead opinion because each of its parts were agreed with by at least two
other Justices , although different ones for each part. The plurality opinion overturned the strict
trimester formula previously used in Roe vs. Wade which then made it a shorter time period before
the State s interest in the fetus outweighed the woman s interest to abort. The plurality opinion also
got rid of the husband notification requirement, saying that it would worsen situations of spousal
abuse because it would give husbands too much power over their wives.
William Rehnquist, Byron White, Harry Blackmun, John Paul Stevens, Antonin Scalia, and Clarence
Thomas those who were not included in the plurality decision wrote or joined opinions in which
they partially concurred and partially dissented from the decision.

47. Boston Tea Party Research Paper
The Boston Tea Party was a tremendous moment in history that was caused by many factors and
had many lasting effects that led to the war that shaped our country into what it is today, The
Revolutionary War. The Boston Tea Party occurred due to the creation of The Tea Act in 1773. The
colonists retaliated by taking teaoff of a British boat and throwing it into the harbor. This led to the
creation of The Intolerable Acts, and the beginning of The Revolutionary War. The creation of The
Tea Act was the major leading cause of The Boston Tea Party
. It all started in 1760 when Francis

They introduced The Coercive Acts that acted as a punishment for the colonists. The Coercive
Acts broke into two parts, The Intolerable Acts and The Quebec Act. The Quebec Act gave the
colonists the right to practice Roman Catholic Religion on their own free will (Brackemyre). The
Intolerable Acts broke up into even more separate parts. The first of which was The BostonPort
Bill. That closed all ports in and out of Boston until the tea that was thrown into the harbor was
paid for. That was too expensive for the colonists to pay for, and if they did, then the British would
still come out as the winners in the retaliation against this tax. The next piece of The Intolerable

murdering colonists were to be tried in England. This just about guaranteed that the British soldiers

48. Ballad Of Birmingham Essay
Dudley Randall s poem, Ballad of Birmingham, takes the reader to its dilemma and environment
leading to the death of an innocent little girl. The poet guides his audience through the struggles,
hardships, and surroundings that his protagonist faced in Birmingham. The reader learns who or
what is the antagonist in this piece of literature that leads to the problem of the poem. Randall
demonstrates his thought of racial violence that is shown in the setting and situation of his poem,
Ballad of Birmingham. The poem is based on true events. On September 15, 1963, a church was
bombed in the city of Birmingham. The city got a nickname, Bombingham because of the
bombing occurrences that happened often by the KKK. This is why the poet, Dudley Randall,
wrote a poem about this tragic event because he had a strong feeling about people being mistreated
for their color of skin. They suffered and wanted to put an end to racismand segregation. This is
what influenced them to march and protest. In the poem, the little girl is asking her mother if she
can go and march for their freedom but the mother says no because it is too dangerous for her to
go. She rather have her child go to church and be safe than be in danger, but it turned out to be a
tragic accident taking her daughter to church.
No, baby, no, you may not go,
For I fear those guns will fire.
But you may go to church instead
And sing in the children s choir. (Randall 13 16)
As a result, the poem is a ballad. A ballad is a form of poetry that is written as a song. It is meant
to sound like a nursery rhyme. Since it sounds very child like, it is easy to understand. The poem,
Ballad of Birmingham is telling a story about a little girl who wants to join the civil rights
movement march in Birmingham, but her mother does not let her attend which turns out to be a
tragic ending. It makes a reader surprised when they read the last stanzas because no one would
have thought the little girl would ve died because of how the poem is written in a song like structure.
By introducing the poem, the protagonist asks her mother a question:
Mother dear, may I go downtown
Instead of out to play,
And march the streets of Birmingham
In a Freedom March today? (Randall 1 4)

49. Media Portrayal Of Violence In The Media
The risk of developing aggressive behavior is high among children who were raised in a negative
environment such as social and economic factors play a huge role. The primary place a children
is in is at home. Poverty has a significant impact on a child s social behavior these children that
are raised in poor environments have a higher risk of behavior problems. Impoverished
communities have a wide range of people living there not all the people in that neighborhood may
have the same parenting styles or teach their child to behave. Children in impoverished
neighborhoods can often play with other kids outdoors and since other children may not be raised
to behave well they will bring that behavior in their homes and begin to use it. Potential behavior
that can arise from other children who do not behave can lead to not respecting others, anger, and
violence.
The media has been linked to aggressive behavior in children. The outcome of media portrayal of
violence can have lasting effects such as children can be begin to feel less sensitive to the pain
and suffering of others. Sometimes watching violence can even be enjoyable because of how the
media plays it out to be. It may be funny or no consequences or punishment to violent act
committed. Violence seems to be everywhere, on television, news, video games and especially
movies this creates a distorted view of what reality truly is. Children that watch violence on
television will at some point imitate those aggressive acts

50. Expansion Of Westward Expansion
The westward expansion can be marked by a tremendous expansion of industry and agriculture as
well as the spread of settlements across the continent. The population of the United states was said
that it doubled during this period. Most of the growth was concentrated in the plain states across the
continent as well as the Northeast and Midwest. The Northeast became the front runner in the
industrial aspect of the land while the south remained mostly agricultural.
The west had much to offer and was one of the most sought after land after the discovery of gold
in California resulting in an influx of people lured in by the hopes of striking it rich. With so many
people traveling across the United States the trade and travel across suddenly became more
important. With more traveling westward with high hopes, it became ever apparent the need of a
railroad system. The Transcontinental railroad plan was now becoming important now more than
ever.
The completion of the Transcontinental railroad marks a major milestone of the history of the
United States. The railroad beginnings lead back to congress approving multiple survey parties to
investigate routes eventually leading to no avail as no one could decide whether to take a northern
or southern route. On July 1, 1862, Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act, authorizing land grants
and government bonds, which amounted to $32,000 per mile of track laid, to two companies, the
Central Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific

Essay on Florianne by Daniel Woodrell
A horrific event may change life entirely. Even worse, an unsolved mystery regarding a loved one
may lead to despair and restrain a person from moving on. While knowing the truth may bring a
feeling of closure, inquietude and uneasiness may ensue uncertainty. The short story Florianne,
written by Daniel Woodrell, tells about a father whose entire life revolves around the mysterious
disappearance of his daughter. Even eleven years after she vanished he still hasn t begun to move
on. Throughout the story the reader may interpret the disappearance with different approaches. One
may either assume that the daughter was kidnapped, or that she ran away herself from her home
and the small town life. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Florianne comes from the word flora, which is the Latin word for flower. It s derived from the
word flos, with the meaning flower or blossom.. In the story there s described a change in
Florianne s character and behavior. The narrator says ... the girl ran to fat for so long, had a roly
poly figure until the year before she went gone...That meant so much to her, to finally have a
figure clothes looked good on (page 42, lines 4 10). Florianne blossomed before she vanished.
Henry also blames Florianne s weight gain on her mother while describing her figure as a roly
poly figure. He s to some extent (14:6) bullied Florianne and just a year before she disappeared
she found the strength and determination to change her body and her life. This course of action
can be interpreted as... She gains control over her life and in contrast to her father s self pity, she s
going to take action over her fate, just like her mother did.
Daniel Woodrell succeeds in creating a short story which forces the reader to consider different
scenarios. Paranoia and obsession are luring beneath the surface of a protagonist portrayed as a
desperate father unable to move on. Daniel Woodrell shows how a tragic event may consume a
person as well as leave said person in denial and without the opportunity to proceed. And while the
upfront possibility that the father is true in his assumption that his daughter was

Symbolic Role Played by Cosmic Imagery in Romeo and Juliet Cosmic imagery and allusions to
stars have been used for centuries to describe divine and supernatural events on earth. In the play
Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, cosmic references are used to amplify the deep
emotions of love Romeo and Juliet feel for each other. Vivid cosmic imagery intensifies emotions
of love and hate, bringing the play to life. Cosmic references include the idea of fate written in the

Their abandonment of stars leads to their early demise as they attempted to control their own
lives. Stars are known for their beauty and dazzling effect which is related to fate as well. This
idea of fate enhances their love for each other and the cosmic imagery adds a beautiful touch.
Later, Romeo foreshadows his untimely demise in Act 1 when he claims Some consequence yet
hanging in the stars/ shall begin his fearful date. (1.4.107 108). Romeo knows that it is fate who
directs his sail, but his trust in the stars quickly diminishes throughout the play, although his
frequent references to cosmic objects remain. They both believe in fate, but as trouble arises from
their relationship, they lose hope and deny the stars as guides. Cosmic imagery is used by Romeo
and Juliet to describe each other, adding a sense of unique intimacy to their love. But the stars
never fated for them to be together for eternity, ruining their majestic love story. Throughout Romeo
and Juliet s flourishing relationship, celestial imagery is used when talking about each other and
bringing out the pure love they have for one another. Through a combination of metaphors,
personification, poetry, similes, and allusions, their emotions for each other are shown with
celestial imagery being the center theme of their love. Romeo speaks delicately about Juliet s eyes

1 Introduction
Brownfield development is the process of redevelopment on previously developed lands that are
abandoned, closed or underused (Adams, De Sousa Tiesdell, 2010). While some brownfield can
be too contaminated, most brownfields are re useable to create great value once cleaned up. And
in this world of scarce resources, brownfield development becomes crucial as we focus more on
sustainability and resource optimizing. While factors of rising awareness of urban sustainability
issues, presence of derelict/disused urban space and society s rising demand for urban lifestyle
promotes brownfield development, the process to transfer from greenfield development to

The implementation significantly increased the percentage of brownfield development from 50%
in 1995 to 60% in 1998 (Adams, 2004). This clearly shows the effectiveness of regulations on
brownfield development. However, DETR (mentioned in Adams, 2004) point out we should not be
overly positive about the apparent statistic results because they might not be 100% reflective of
true facts due to existing loopholes in the structure of the policy. Those loopholes are failure to
distinguish rural and urban brownfield development, failure to leave out conversion of good
buildings, and failure to recognize the economic effects of housing downturn (DETR as mentioned
in Adams, 2004). Generally speaking, location control does promote and increase urban brownfield
residential development. But, attention can easily be distracted (Adams, 2004). This is also
consistent with founding by Adams, De Sousa Tiesdell (2010).
In addition, while location control gave urban brownfield residential development a base start,
permitting certain amounts of compulsory purchase of brownfield sites (Adams, De Sousa Tiesdell,
2010) boosted urban brownfield development. This would be another example of government
promoting brownfield development by making site assembling easier for developer. This course of
action becomes more significant as we get to section 3.

54. The Stereotypes Of Body Image In Society And Culture
The bodies seen in the media recently tend to represent extremely prejudiced beauty. Many
companies, especially in the fashion industry, value the appearance of the models, and appoint
them as a representation of their products. In addition, the models walking the runway at the
fashion show and posing in the magazines, are used as a display of beauty to represent the
idealized or required thinness and stylish . These are familiar sights in daily life, and obviously,
this dazzling world consists of privileged people, and there is no room for marginalized people.
As a result, these stereotypical body images are implanted in people s subconsciousnesses, and
unknowingly, people try to follow this trend. Also, through these biased images, people define
what is normal and what is the gendered role of women in this society. These unrealistic and
symbolic body images cause many social problems, and establishes the standard from the view of
privileged people, while ignoring the minority people out of the normal frame.
This essay explores how the biased body image influences on the current society and culture, and
how the marginalized people are categorized in this society. Firstly, in order to grasp the stereotype
of the body image, I will discuss about who has the authority to control their gender or the body
image.

55. A Summary On Corporate Governance
Like de Kluyver argued in his publish (A primer on Corporate Governance, 2009), there is a
presumption that, in making a business decision, the directors acted on an informed basis, in good
faith, and in the honest belief that the action was taken in the best interest of the corporation.
However, even though the bar has been set, the definition of best interest of the corporation is open
for every business directors to interpret. In the case of Enron, the rule had been bent so hard that it
finally broke. The company was originally established as an energy provider in the US. In 1970s,

There were specific internal control protocols and external audit agreements designed to prevent

In terms of internal control failing, first of all, the malfunction of the board of directors would be
our primary concern. Enron Board of Directors clearly failed to oversight company operations. In
