Fear in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Over the course of Tom Robinson s trial, Mayella s state of mind shifts from anxious and
nervous to distress and panic due the aspects of guilt and fear. When Mayella is called to the
witness stand, and asked to provide her testimony, she is very uneasy, uncertain and hesitant
towards her claims. As the questions grow more specific and complex, Mayella has a difficult
time answering and struggles with providing the truth. The jury calls nineteen year old Mayella
Ewell to the witness stand to provide evidence regarding the charge of Tom Robinson. Mayella is
claimed to be a victim of the sexual harassment and is here to testify her side of the situation,
either confirming, or denying it. When Mr. Gilmer tells Mayella to describe the events of the
evening when she was attacked, she s[its] silently...stare[s] at him, and burst[s] into tears (179).
When Judge Taylor tries to calm her down, she points to Atticus and tells the jury that she is afraid
of him. Mayella s first few actions and responses to the jury illustrate her nervousness and anxietyin
regards to speaking up about this assumed crime. The fact that she began to cry due to feartowards
Atticus demonstrates that she has something to hide her guilt, and her shame. The gavel
symbolizes Mayella s guilt and her uncertainty towards her testimony. This symbol is significant
because Mayella lacks a sense of confidence in her tone, as she struggles to answer the provided
questions, and she can therefore be viewed as

The Truth About Human Trafficking
The Truth About Human Trafficking
Human Trafficking is a modern day form of slavery involving the illegal trade of people for
exploitation or commercial gain (Human Trafficking). The term human trafficking evolved from
slavery in the early 1900 s and continued to become a global market over the past 100 years. There
are several different types of human trafficking such as forced labor, sexual exploitation, people
smuggling, and the harvesting of organs for commercial profit (Types of Human Trafficking.).
Victims of human trafficking are stripped of their identity and are denied their natural, human
rights. There are a total of 27 million enslaved women, men, and children all over the world. The
average age of a trafficking victim around the world is 12 years old (Human Trafficking The A21
Campaign). As a society that values an individual s freedom and rights, the awareness and
consequences associated with human trafficking must be increased, as many governments do not
contribute enough resources in order to combat the various forms of human trafficking that occurs
among nations.
Human trafficking began when the traditional form of slavery evolved into the forced prostitution
of women. In 1904, the International Agreement for the Suppression of White Slave Traffic was
put into place. This law was created to prevent women and children from being trafficked into sex
trade. The League of Nations was created in 1927 to discuss international issues, such as human

Hotel California Poem Analysis
Music as Poetry Essay
The song, Hotel California , by the Eagles, is a very poetic song that uses imagery, and
symbolism to bring out the theme in an indirect way of the speaker s personal issues of life. The
Eagles use imagery to set the mood and tone of the song. Along with many aspects of symbolism to
input a lot of double meaning throughout the whole song. With both imagery and symbolism
incorporated, many fans or people who have heard of this song would believe that the theme of this
song is about a lonely traveler trying to break his own temptations.
In the first verse of the introduction of the song, imagery is used for the audience to imagine
what exactly is being told. As almost as if it was a setting in a play or a scene in a movie. In the
first verse the first two set of lines says, On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair. Warm
smell of colitas, rising up through the air. (Eagles, Lines 1 2). One can already imagine the speaker
driving down a dark desert highway, with his windows rolled down perhaps, and smelling the
warm air full of desert flowers, or maybe he is smelling marijuana in the air. This could be
because colitas is Spanish slang for a bud of cannabis, but it could also mean desert flowers,
(Philpot). These first two lines already sets the mood of a restless traveler who needs a place to
stay for the night after a long day of driving. It also hints that there could possibly be drugs or other
temptations in this song considering colitas

Congress Controversial Branch
Congress is perhaps the most despised branch in our government. It is widely considered broken
and outdated, and many believe it ignores the wants of the American people. In this paper, I will
discuss Congress in depth and shed light on this controversial branch. The United States
Congress is dived into two section: The House of Representatives and the Senate. The United
Sates Senate has a total of 100 members, while the House of Representatives has 435 members.
In order to become a member of the Senate, one must be at least 30 years old, and have been a
U.S Citizen for 9 years at the time of the elections. One must also be a resident of the state they
will be representing. The House of Representatives, however, requires that a person be at

What The Best College Students Do By Ken Bain
Failure = Success
When I look at the word failure I didn t see success. But that slowly changed as I read the book
What the Best College Students Do by Ken Bain Chapter four. Bain, for me and I m sure many
other, have changed our view point on failure being a bad thing. He instead expressed failure as
an opportunity to learn something. (121) As infants we grow and develop, we learn to walk by
falling down a couple hundred times, and we learn to speak by babbling. By trying to walk, and
trying to talk, we may fail at first. As an infant, you cannot give up when you are face to face
with failure. You must get up and try again to learn. In the book, What the Best College Students
Do by Ken Bain he uses people s experiences and research to explain why failure is an
opportunity to learn something new, rather than seeing failure as something bad. He asserts
people who become highly creative and productive learn to acknowledge failures, even to
embrace them, and to explore and learn from them. (100) Failure is important. If we did not get up
and try again as infants, we would not be where we are today.
The main assertion in this chapter is that failure is a life lesson. Failing is constantly unwelcomed
in our lives. When we are unsuccessful we tend not to think, oh this is going to be a great learning
experience. Bain takes a simple approach to explain what good comes out of failure. He uses
Group A, and Group B. In this experiment, there is two different groups one being A

Differences Between Troy And The Iliad
As the last scene of movie Troy fades, we see the words inspired by Homer s The Iliad . There is
no doubt that the Iliad is one of the greatest poems of all time and, therefore, it has inspired
multiple works of art over almost three thousand years of its existence. One of these works is the
film Troy, which attempts to make an adaptation that reflects the Greek culture and appeals to the
modern audience at the same time. In this essay Troy will be compared with the Iliadthrough
examination of time spans, intended audiences, portrayals of Helen, Achilles and Hector, main
themes of both sources and conveyed messages.
One significant difference between the Iliad and Troy is the timespan. The Iliad is not a story of a
Trojan war, but a story of a hero s wrath. The time span it covers is only a few weeks in the tenth
year of the siege of Troy. Homer chooses to focus on events that occurred during a quarrel of King
Agamemnon, king of Mycenae and brother of Menelaus, and Achilles, the most powerful warrior
of the Achaean army. Homer doesn t go into detail about other events and battles, as the story of
the Trojan War was well known to the Greek society because it has been told and retold by bards
for numerous times and the general plot was still fresh in the minds of the Greeks. For his poem to
stand out, Homer had to be original, so he didn t tell his audience about the war as a whole, but
rather spotlighted the wrath of an individual hero, Achilles. Troy,... Show more content on

Troy s Helen is depicted as a classically beautiful woman, extremely slender, with blonde hair and
fair complexion. This illustrates how an actress for the role of the most beautiful woman in the
world had been chosen to meet modern beauty standards. However, these standards contradict with
the appearance Helen would have had as a woman of the Mediterranean race, which is olive skin,

Foreign Language And Its Effects On American Society
The foreign language deficit in America serves to be inimical to the future of American society.
America s foreign language curriculum displays a more than lackluster approach in relation to
those upheld in other countries. Unlike our European counterparts, most American school systems
only require that students acquire two foreign languagecredits to graduate. Most of the time, these
courses are either taught by some athletic coach who could really care less if you know how to
conjugate the verb ir correctly, or by an overly passionate foreigner who spends the class time
intensively explaining said conjugations to a class full of seniors who just want to graduate. In
some states, this requirement is even nonexistent.

Most of the tacticians throughout Europe and Asia have procured a mastery of several different
languages, English to be included. In accordance with American history, only half of our presidents
(21 to be precise) had a command on a foreign language, sometimes demonstrating a fluency in
both reading and writing in multiple foreign languages. The majority of these men held office
between the 18th and 19th centuries, when language retained greater value in society. The
presidents of the 20th and 21st century do not have the same qualities.
As stated in David Skorton and Glenn Altschuler s article entitled America s Foreign Language
Deficit , learning a foreign language is necessary...
To prosper economically and to improve relations with other countries, U.S. Secretary of Education
Arne Duncan declared, Americans need to read, speak and understand other languages. ...18% of
Americans report speaking a language other than English, while 53% of Europeans (and increasing
numbers in other parts of the world) can converse in a second language.
Multiple studies exist that display the lack of effort exhibited in America in terms of language
learning. According to the Forbes article, the amount of private elementary schools that offer
foreign language courses dropped from 31 to 25 percent, while instruction in public elementary
schools dropped from 24 percent to 15 percent. Even the percentage of middle schools with foreign
language programs decreased from 75 to 58 percent.

The Story Of The Great Story Late August And School
It s late August and school is about to start, everyone s thinking of the great story s their going to
tell their friends when they get back. I had the perfect story to tell, my dad had just bought a
motorcycle for my brother and me. The story, started off with a garage sale. In my family we all
get together to help the Grandparents of the familyhave a garagesale. We were all together at the
end of the day, except my dad, and Aunt and Uncle, who were in the Cities. They were coming
back to day, much to our excitement. The sun was setting behind the big maple tree in the front
yard, and a dark truck, with its headlights shining through the darkness was coming our way.
Dads back! my brother yelled in excitement, catching everyone s attention. We ran out to go meet
the truck as it came to a stop. Our dad got out and told us he has a surprise for us. We followed
him back around to the back of the truck. Dad pulled the tail gate down, and I looked on in
surprise. It s a motorcycle! Mom s not going to be happy. Those were the first thoughts that came to
mindas the miniature motorcycle was being lifted out of the truck. It looked just like the
motorcycles I d seen around town but smaller, the perfect size for kids. It was cherry red and
about 3 feet long and 2 feet high, it looked so small but awesome none the less. We didn t get to
drive the motorcycle that day because it needed to be tuned and my dad wanted to make sure it
safe for us to drive. After we

The Twin Of Twin Transfusion Syndrome ( Ttts )
INTRODUCTION:
Twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a rare disease occurring in 10 15% of monochorionic
diamniotic twin gestations in which vascular connections are shared between the fetuses via a
common placenta1, 2, 3. A theoretical imbalance in the vascular distribution creates a shift in
circulation causing one fetus to receive a surplus in volume, the recipient, and the other to be
deficient, the donor4, 5. TTTS can present at any gestational age6 and can progress in severity
causing significant morbidity, especially to the recipient, and even demise of one or both twins1,

The Role Of Normative And Non Normative. Normative
I find it hard to imagine what my life will become in the future. As people age, they move into
different social roles that provides them with multiple identities. These transitions that we go
through tend to be linked with age, in the sense that as a society we expect something called age
norms which refers to the idea that there are appropriate ages for making these various life
course transitions. There are two types of transitions, normative and non normative. Normative
is when something happens that is expected like starting to drive or having a high school
graduation, where non normative is unexpected such as death or winning the lottery.
Throughout this paper I will focus on what I want my future to look like, and I will look at what
I can currently do to help make this happen. I will also look at my past transitions in life to show
what has led me to be the person that I am today. While I find it hard to think about my future, I
do know that I want to live a healthy, active and meaningful life until the day that I die. While
our life course can be unpredictable, we can still set goals that we want to accomplish. I already
know that my central sources of meaning will be my family and friends. When you age, having
interpersonal relationships like family and friends is key to happiness and having meaning in
life. Normality will also be something I will still want to be seen as a normal person, even though I
have aged a bit. They way that we perceive young and old is

Fashion In The Fashion Industry
In recent years there has been a vast increase in sports fashion in fashion industry. This is partly
because in the 21th century a majority of people choose sport to improve their quality of life,
nevertheless, people need to allocate time in their busy life to do exercise. So the choice of
clothing is more biased in favor sportswear. This essay will discussion the movement cause by the
popularity of sports fashion, while sports fashion welcomed by the people have also some effects
on the fashion industry. This essay aims to demonstrate that sports fashion has become an integral
part of the fashion industry, and manufacturer need to aware of the sustainable development of

Regarding the situation of popularity of sports fashion, is a complex social phenomenon. In
general, social and cultural background were have an impact on fashion. On the one hand, people
s choice what kind of dress to wear are reflect a personal attitude. CoCo Chanel advocates simple
cut design, successful removal of the original complex ridden women clothing and created to
facilitate leisure clothing, lay the foundation for the future development of sports apparel
(Xuan,2008). On the other hand, sports elements also become an indispensable source of
inspiration and direction for designers. Thompson (2016) has noted that a variety of sports elements

Monica ` S Presence In Augustine s Life
Monica s presence in the spiritual life of Augustine poignantly reveals the profundity of love
shared between a mother and her son. In the nine books in which she is mentioned, Monica makes
significant decisions that have a substantive impact on Augustine s early life. Despite being a
devout Catholic, Monica chooses to delay the baptism of her son until later in life. While this
would be unusual for a contemporary member of the Catholic church, Monica believed it was in the
best interest of Augustine to defer his baptism, allowing him to purge himself of his sinful and
ungodly desires present during his youth with baptism received at an older age. As such, Monica
minimizes the accumulation of sin that Augustine may commit after his baptism, thus allowing him
to be to be judged more warmly by Godafter his death.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
13). Early on, Augustine is unsure of the validity of his mother s decision, considering her to
have failed in her role, as he believed he would be less sinful if baptized at a younger age,
eliminating the ritual s absence as an excuse for him to continue committing sin. Augustine s
blaming Monica for not leading him on the correct spiritual path, proliferates as he grows older as
he deplores her apparent lack of effort in restraining his sexual desires. He laments, ...although she
had warned me to guard my virginity...she did not seek to restrain my sexual drive within the limit
of the marriage bond (pg. 28). However, Augustine s sentiment that his mother did not put forth
great enough effort to restrict his desire slowly dissipates, as he struggles on the path to salvation.
Augustine begins to recognize the significant role Monica played in his conversion, emphasizing
the role she played as both a physical mother and spiritual

The Shape of the American Military, Technology, Culture Essay
Technology and the American Way of War Since 1945 covers in detail a wide range of weapons
systems, technologies, and other equipment developed by the United States Military. Naturally, a
significant amount of Mahnken s book places a heavy emphasis on technologies and systems
developed during the Cold War. The book could almost be examined as a complete history of the
development of military technology during that period, however, the author has a much more
significant purpose for his work than to just educate the reader on military history. Mahnken says,

Two, it put no personnel in immediate danger (Mahnken, loc. 330 340).
Another question is whether or not nuclear weapons had revolutionized warfare and the use of
ground forces. Mahnken writes that The advent of nuclear weapons and strategic air power
appeared to call into question the utility of traditional ground forces (Mahnken, loc. 665). While
nuclear weapons were certainly an advantage in warfare, not every situation is going to call for the
use of a nuclear weapon. History has shown that even in the most recent of conflicts, militaries
continue to rely on ground forces. Perhaps the advancement of aircraft and their technologies have
been much more crucial to the changes in modern day militaries and how they fight wars.
However, history has shown that even recent conflicts continue to rely on ground forces to some
extent. The use of air power may have taken over, but nuclear advancements seem to be of little
consequence today. Air bombings and the use of smart weapons has dramatically increased, but
troops still hit the ground.
As previously stated, Mahnken proposes that technology is not only shaped by culture, but that
technology itself shapes culture. Changes in higher education prove him to be right. By the early
70 s there were over 10,000 engineers employed in the aerospace industry (Mahnken, loc. 788).
Major Course Themes
Like Keegan, Mahnken believes culture and society will help shape technology. In his book s

Dracula as a Perverted Christ Figure In Bram Stoker s novel, Dracula, is presented as a perverted
Christ figure because he imitates multiple actions of Christianity, and perverts those ideas. An
example of how Dracula is a perverted Christ figure would be when Dracula forces Mina to drink
his blood, he tries to mimic the Christian Communion, like when Christ gave up his blood for us. In
the novel Draculaalso takes the lives of numerous people, just two of them being Renfield, and

Quantitative Research Article Review Essay
Quantitative Research Article Review The quantitative research article that I chose to review was
a study completed by Dougherty and Thompson (2009), found in Research in Nursing Health.
Very few researchers have focused their study on the impact of cardiac arrest and ICD
implantation on a patient s intimate partner. What little is known about caregiving responsibilities
and caregiver burden after a cardiac illness or event has previously been focused on the spousal
experiences following an acute myocardial infarction or coronary artery bypass graft surgery

Since little is known about the stated subject, this study was performed to better understand the
experience and impact of ICD implantation after cardiac arrest on a patient s intimate partner. I
believe that this study falls into the basic research category. According to Knapp (1998), research
that is designed primarily to extend the knowledge base in a discipline by contributing to theory
generation or theory testing is called basic research (p. 6). The study s purpose is to extend
knowledge and to better understand human experiences regarding the physical, psychological,
emotional, and psychosocial impact of cardiac arrest and ICD implantation on a patient s intimate
partner. At the end of the study, researchers did declare that further research is needed on the topic
and that intimate partners may benefit from an intervention that would assist them with the
following: their psychological adjustment, learning how to manage the impact of ICD s on their
relationship, and learning how to effectively deal with the caregiver strain that is associated with
caring for loved ones after a cardiac event.
Research Questions, Hypotheses, and Design The study that was reviewed did not explicitly state
any research questions or hypotheses; rather, a study purpose was noted. In the research study
completed by Dougherty and Thompson (2009), the purpose was to describe the intimate partner s

Taking religion away from the system invalidates everything it was created to uphold. Washington
is clear that the key to the prosperity of the United States lies in its religious principles.
Washington continues his warnings regarding the use of public credit and the establishment of
permanent foreign alliances with other nations. He urges to use credit sparingly and underlines
the importance of having a balanced budget. Washington also urges paying off the debts of wars
in times of peace, in the form of taxes, so that future generations do not have to pay for a prior
generation s battles. Next he issues the warning, It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent
alliances with any portion of the foreign world. This was mainly in his opposition with any alliance
with France or Britain, as he did not want to be forced into a war that was not ours to fight. But
Washington was realistic when he stated that temporary alliances may be necessary during
extraordinary emergencies for the protection of the country.
In conclusion, Washington s Farewell Address is still a relevant document that should be
continually analyzed for its important message to the American people. He envisioned a
government that protected our liberty and ensured the freedoms we still enjoy today. If only our

Families that need a heart transplant will be very happy if the transplant works. The negative of
the heart is usually it beats about 50 to 70 times each minute, and the heart rate may increase 2
to 3 fold during stress or exercise. The economical disadvantages for the person receiving the
treatment Estimates of the cost of the artificial heart include charges for the surgical procedure,
device and console, and continuing medical surveillance. These estimates range from a low of
$100,000 to a high of $300,000 per patient in the initial year. The stress and lack of exercise will
restrict the patients from doing regular exercise because the new heart wouldn t be able to

amount of money that is available to the patient so people living in second and third world

inspired by the events that happened around him. Edgar Allan Poes The Raven is a dark reflection
on lost love, death, and loss of hope. The poem examines the emotions of a young man who has
lost his lover to death and tries to distract himself from his sadness through books. Edgar Allan
Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809 (Poe s Biography). Poe never

his mother was a British actor and his father was an actor straight out of Boston (Poe s

The Role Of Yongzheng In Manchu And China
Emperor Kangxi died in 1722, leaving Yongzheng to become the fourth emperor of the Manchu
Qing Dynasty. The Kangxi emperor had fourteen sons and it was Yongzheng who ascended to the
throne, some accused Yongzheng of using nefarious tactics to achieve his position. Yongzheng s
language abilities in Manchuand Chinese as well as his cultivation in traditional classics and
poetry all met with his father s approval, but it was his sincerity in performing filial piety that
especially won Kangxi s praise. Being chosen as Emperor caused his brothers great unhappiness,
because of their jealousy much of Yongzheng s early years on the throne were spent defending his
rule through political maneuvering and consolidating his power of his Empire.

Huckleberry Finn Weather Analysis
Weather plays an important role in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In one part of the
book, Jim predicts that it will rain and it does. While the rain is coming down, they find a river
house with a dead body inside. Jim then covers up the dead body in order to protect Huck, while
they both steal valuables from the house. The rain represents the mysteriousness surrounding the
dead body and the house. It is later revealed in the book that the dead body was Huck s father. In
this case, the rain is also restorative. Huck is now able to become his old self before his father
returned to his life because his father is dead now. The rain in this case has a dual meaning of
mysteriousness and restoration. Later on, Huck and Jim stumble upon a shipwreck... Show more

In the twenty first century, a reader sees a God helping Odysseus enact revenge on a couple of
suitors. In our modern society, we view murder as wrong no matter how it is justified. Even
revenge murder is murder in our current society. However, based on a contemporary view, a
reader would understand why Odysseus killed all the suitors. Odysseus was defending his honor.
Back when the book was written, the justice system was not as complex as it is today. The
killing of men to defend your honor was seen as justifiable. In addition, the god and goddess in
that time had more of a meaning than in our society today. In the book, Homer assumes that we
know about the god and goddess, but nowadays, many of us do not know their significance. In
contemporary times, the reader would understand why Athena is helping Odyssey achieve his
revenge. It is because Athena is the goddess of wisdom, law, and justice. Athena is helping him
obtain law and justice. A modern reader might miss this connection. The reader might see the
killing of the suitors as unjustified, but to a contemporary reader, the killings are sanctioned by law

Ellen DeGeneres is a Emmy Award winning talk show host and an exceptional comedian.
Several may know her as the voice of Dory on Finding Nemo, or even as a judge on American

regardless of whether the joke is funny or not, the manner in which she delivers the joke draws

Representation Of Chang E In Chinese Culture
Chang e is thought very highly of in the eyes of the Chinese. They reflect her ways of peace and
gentleness in their culture. They use her image in their culture often. An example would be how
they name their moon launchings after her. In Chinese minds, the moon is associated with
gentleness and brightness, expressing the beautiful yearnings of the Chinese. (Cultural China) The
people in China see Chang e in the same way they see the moon, peaceful, gentle, and bright. She
is very important and brings joy to the Chinese people. This leads me to believe that the tales in
which Chang e is portrayed as a thief are not an accurate representation of her.

Essay On Reverse Discrimination
Discrimination: treating a person or group differently when the reason is not relevant (Kaye and
Thomson). A double standard is created when a rule or regulation does not fairly apply to all
groups. An example of this is racism s double standard that has been created while trying to amend
to unfairness created by racism. These double standard are hostile to attempts of true equality due to
the harm it causes to the media/justice system create reverse discrimination, and affect college

Parliamentary Protests Of The United States
The threat presented by extra parliamentary protest in the years 1815 20 was plagued by weak
and divided leadership which limited it from driving results that met its full potential. However,
there were also other factors that served to undermine progress such as the actions of the
government in repressing dissenters and the low level of available logistical resources .
Evan tells us in Source 3 that the movement lacked coherent leadership. His view supports the
argument for the threat being undermined by the weakness of having too many orators captivated
by the sound of their own voices of whom not enough bridged the gap between rhetoric and reality.
Being unable to convey the actions people would be required to take for change within their
messages reduced the movement almost to a talking shop of radical leaders, carried away without
realistic planning . We can see the fruits of their failed labours in the way the government had little
difficulty in handling any protests and this repeated derailing meant there was rarely a leadership
united enough to effectively inspire confidence. On the other hand, Thompson deems radicalism to
have assumed more conscious, organised and sophisticated forms , going so far as to call it a
heroic age , which somewhat refutes the criticisms of inadequacy in the power of the speeches
made. Indeed, the reality that in addition to Norwich and Sheffield: Nottingham, Coventry and
Bolton were also assessed by the authorities as being

Fog In Apocalypse Now
An ominous feeling can be evoked in novels and films alike when fog approaches. The
encroaching fog constraints mankind by physically limiting visibility and trapping men within
their own minds causing their behavior to be irrational. Fog is symbolic of misery. Heart of
Darkness uses thick fog as an obstacle to halt the crew s expedition to find Kurtz. Marlow, the
crew s captain, does not allow the fog to stop his devotion to Kurtz and pushes forward on his
mission to rescue him. In Apocalypse Now, Willard feels the same devotion towards Kurtz as
Marlow does. But Willard has a different mission; Willard must remove Kurtz from operating as a

Completely delusional, Kurtz exclaims the horror! The horror! and passes away naturally
(Conrad 112). Marlow keeps his loyalty to Kurtz after his death to honor the devotion he felt for
Kurtz when he was alive (Conrad 112). Willard felt a similar devotion to Kurtz, but faced a
different decision. Kurtz was not in the best state of health, but he wasn t actively dying. Kurtz
spared Willard s life when he arrived at his camp unannounced, however, Willard did not spare
Kurtz s life and had to follow the instructions of his mission. Willard murders Kurtz. Willard
opted to kill Kurtz rather than take him back because of the devotion he felt. Kurtz had nothing
to go home to and would have been imprisoned for acting as a rogue officer. By killing Kurtz,
Willard saves him from the horrors he would have been greeted with from the punishment of the
military. The cutting of the film limits Kurtz s murder scene. Instead, a ceremonial cow s sacrifice
by the natives is shown. The ceremonial, sacred cow was valued greatly by the natives, like Kurtz
was by Willard, who remained loyal to Kurtz to the last, and even beyond (Conrad

The Importance Of Prisons In Prison
A lot of people talk about someone before they get sentenced to prison, but do not ask about what
goes on while they serve time for their actions. Criminals rights are basically revoked during
their sentencing and not given back after. Whether it is the way they are treated by prison
officials, voting while in jail or when they get let free, and the way they are treated for the
religion they follow. They are overlooked by people who have right just because they are locked
up and serving time.
Have you ever asked yourself how are criminals treated while they are serving time? Well if you
have ever asked yourself this questions the answer is poorly. Criminals are treated so poorly by
prison officials. In the article Prisoner Abuse: How Different are U.S. Prisons? they discuss how
prisoners are constantly being abused by their guards. The author states in regards to the way
prison inmates are treated that, In recent years, U.S. prison inmates have been beaten with fists
and batons, stomped on, kicked, shot, stunned with electronic devices, doused with chemical
sprays, choked, and slammed face first onto concrete floors by the officers whose job it is to
guard them. . This is stuff people would usually be sent to jail for doing but because prisoners are
not taken as seriously as other people it is just overturned. This is not a good thing because it does
not go by the human rights that everyone has regardless of the mistakes they make. Officers are

Napoleon reigned over the French from May 18, 1804 to April 11, 1814 and ruled Italy over the

From picking fresh vegetables from a garden to working in one s yard, to feeding the animals
around a farm, everything is made simpler using a red wheelbarrow. This I feel is what Williams
meant when he stated, so much depends upon a red wheel barrow (Williams, 1923). He meant
just that, that everything being done can be made easier depending on the use of a
wheelbarrow. Red is a typical color of the old wheelbarrows I can remember using on the farm
with my Papa; just as, my little red wagon was pulled behind me in helping. The red a symbolic

This gives us a vision of the red wheelbarrow having droplets of water along the sides as well as

it a new fresher look making it shinier than was in its normal dull state ( Exploring Poetry , 2001.)
The white chickens (Williams, 1923) are beside the red wheelbarrow as a symbol of color

The Criminalization Of Prostitution And Sex Work
In a cozy, first world country, the realm of crime, abuse, and drug use, seems like it is worlds

entire world, being forced to work in the grit and grime of the streets, and to make a dangerous

men and women shouldn t have to lower their standards of living in order to exercise their rights to

otherwise with a recent development: a request for the decriminalization and legalization of

to do all they can to better the lives of sex workers. The organization actively worked with current

Other abolitionists of prostitution seem to think that sex work fuels the demand for commercial

Astrology Vs Astronomy Essay
Astronomy versus Astrology
Astronomy is a science that studies everything outside of the earth s atmosphere, such as planets,
stars, asteroids, galaxies; and the properties and relationships of those spiritual bodies. Astronomers
base their studies on research and observation. Astrology, on the other hand, is the belief that the
positioning of the stars and planets affect the way events occur on earth. If you re interested in the
solar system and the planets, other celestial objects like asteroids and comets, other galaxies and
the rest of the universe, what makes up space, and the possibility of alien life or space travel,
astronomy is the field you re considering. Astronomy is a natural science that studies celestial
objects and phenomena. It applies mathematics, physics, and chemistry, in an effort to explain the
origin of those objects and phenomena and their evolution. Objects of interest include planets,
moons, stars, galaxies, and comets; while the phenomena include supernova explosions, gamma ray
bursts, and cosmic microwave background radiation. More generally, all astronomical phenomena
that originate outside Earth s atmosphere are within the purview of astronomy. A related but
distinct subject, physical cosmology, is concerned with the study of the Universe as a whole.

In the bird world, it is a well known fact that the male of the species sports feathers of many
different eye catching colors. Consider the peacock s tail, the robin s red breast, the jay s bright

female of each of those species. The scientific literature, from elementary school textbooks to

the protection of the offspring from danger. Humans, too, may have psychological or instinctual

Nigeria s Economy And Natural Resources Essay
Introduction
Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa and the seventh most populated country in the
world. It has the 20th largest economy in the world with a $500 billion to $1 trillion Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) with an emerging market and large oil and limestone natural resources.
This is significant knowing that limestone is a mineral source that is used in most products you use
every day including paper, bottles, paint, building supplies, and food. (WIKIPEDIA, 2015)
Through maximum exploration and exploitation, Nigeria can earn more foreign exchange to
complement its earnings. In addition, the utilization of this product will create job opportunities for
unemployed Nigerians and act as a job multiplier for other industries and business. Nigeria s
economy and natural resources place them in a position to become one of the largest economies in
the world.

Many would argue it is the true number one, primary reason that the Boxer Rebellion occurred in
the first place. The spread of Christianity in China at this time was an extremely convincing sing of
Western influence. Luella Miner was among the westerners that happened to be in China during the
Boxer Rebellion. According to her, their motto was essentially Kill the foreign devils,
Kill...Kill...Kill! . This motto would greatly explain the violence and aggression shown by the
Boxers during the rebellion. Many Boxers claim to have been primarily annoyed with the Western
influence in China at the time. Christianity would have played a key role in demonstrating Western
imperialism, which is what would explain the murdering of thousands of Christian missionaries and
Chinese Christians living in China at the time. When considered, there are not many things that
scream Western culture more than Western religion itself. Opium was only a substance that many
Chinese enjoyed abusing and Western ways of ruling were heavily affected by that country s
religious beliefs. This is why Christianity would have received the primary amounts of hate from
the Boxers. Many Chinese Christians and missionaries were murdered as a result of the Boxer
Rebellion. Approximately 32,000 and 200 missionaries were murdered. This figure more clearly can

There comes a soldier, his bare feet are seen thro his worn out shoes, his legs nearly naked from
the tatter d remains of an only pair of stockings... (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777) Dr. Waldo was
one of the thousands of soldiers barely scraping themselves through this mess. Sick soldiers, small
huts, poor ventilation, and vomiting. These are only some of the poor conditions at the American
Revolution winter camp known as Valley Forge. In the winter of 1777, soldiers were living under
ruthless predicaments with a 10% probability of death. Smallpox was spreading fast and many
would never see their family again. Washington s position as a general was being doubted by
members of congress, instead assuming that his leadership efforts will lead the Americans to
retreat. A soldierin the Continental Congress should leave, because of the rapid increase of death
and illness, living conditions in camp,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One poor condition that the continental army faced was the unbearable sickness. For instance Dr.
Albigence Waldo states, I am sick discontented and out of humour. (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777).
This shows that, from where they have started the living conditions have not improved. Dr.
Albigence Waldo also writes, Poor food hard lodging cold weather fatigue Nasty cloaths nasty
Cookery Vomit half my time smoak d out my senses... (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777) This statement
describes the terrible food, the sickness, the ripped clothes, and the terrible environment.
Furthermore, Dr. Albigence Waldo records, Heartily wish myself at home, my skin and eyes are
almost spoil d with continual smoke. (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777) Particularly, this shows the
quality of ventilation that the soldiers are bearing with. These living conditions have shown, that
the congress can t support them and give the army enough money for food or clothes at the very

Post-Operative Management Of Surgical Procedure
3.Have there been any recent advances in the post operative management of the selected procedure?
Why? Recent rehabilitation guidelines now have a more scientific rationale and basis. The PT
should keep abreast of current advances in surgical procedures, clinical evaluation and treatment
techniques to ensure that contemporary interventions are being provided to produce an optimal
outcome. The post operative management of a meniscal repair takes on a more conservative
approach as compared to partial meniscectomy to allow for successful healing of the repair.
Rehabilitation guidelines differ among surgeons and remain controversial. Programs should be
individualized to the type of surgical procedure performed, the type of meniscal tear repaired

Ancient Christian Religion
Along the background of events that preceded the tension between the Christians and the state, is
good to mention that in 63 B.C. Pompey Magnus had conquered Judea. Roman rule was
solidified when Herod was appointed as the king. At certain point, from the point of view of the
Romans, Christ s followers were seen as another fanatic sect as of Judaism, that no only contradict
the religious practices of the emperor and his desire of being worshiped but also they were
attracting many citizens away from the roman unity to join them and they were, in certain way, a
threat to the desire of the emperor because of the formation of small basic religious community to
share their goods and to live a more simple lifestyle. At the year 70 A.D., the destruction... Show

Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161 180 A.D.), emitted the condemnation of Justin happened in Rome;
and Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, suffered the martyrdom. Similar destiny suffered the Christians in
Lyon (Gaul) in the year 177, where Potino, the elder, and the nineteen bishops were killed. Already,
by the end of the second century, the Christian Church was well established as an institution with a
system of hierarchical authority based on the Tradition, the Sacred Scriptures, and its creed.
However, at the same time the Roman Empire began trembling with civil wars and danger on the
borders. By this time, governors began elaborating legislations against Christians. Emperor
Septimius Severus (193 211), prohibited proselytism under severe punishment. Emperor
Maximus sent to death all members of Christian clergy (249 251). Emperor Decius requested
that all Roman citizens showed their loyalty to the empire by performing pagan sacrifices and
receiving a certificate after. In the year 257, Emperor Valerian took measure against the Christian
clergy and prohibited any cult and reunions at the catacombs. A year after, in 258, he ordered the
execution of all who refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods and to the Emperor. Cyprian of
Carthage, Pope Sixtus II, and his deacon Lawrence, were among those who suffered martyrdom. In
the year 261, Emperor Gallienus made public an edict of tolerance that lasted for about forty years
which meant a peaceful time for the Church and the number of Christians grew up very fast. On the
other hand, Diocletian s persecution (303 A.D.) was extended to the whole empire, with decrees,
burning churches, destroying temples and many sanctions and prohibitions were emitted against
those who openly professed of belonging to the Christian community. This time was very insecure
for them and for that reason they celebrated their gathering and cult in the hidden places of the

  • 2. Fear in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Over the course of Tom Robinson s trial, Mayella s state of mind shifts from anxious and nervous to distress and panic due the aspects of guilt and fear. When Mayella is called to the witness stand, and asked to provide her testimony, she is very uneasy, uncertain and hesitant towards her claims. As the questions grow more specific and complex, Mayella has a difficult time answering and struggles with providing the truth. The jury calls nineteen year old Mayella Ewell to the witness stand to provide evidence regarding the charge of Tom Robinson. Mayella is claimed to be a victim of the sexual harassment and is here to testify her side of the situation, either confirming, or denying it. When Mr. Gilmer tells Mayella to describe the events of the evening when she was attacked, she s[its] silently...stare[s] at him, and burst[s] into tears (179). When Judge Taylor tries to calm her down, she points to Atticus and tells the jury that she is afraid of him. Mayella s first few actions and responses to the jury illustrate her nervousness and anxietyin regards to speaking up about this assumed crime. The fact that she began to cry due to feartowards Atticus demonstrates that she has something to hide her guilt, and her shame. The gavel symbolizes Mayella s guilt and her uncertainty towards her testimony. This symbol is significant because Mayella lacks a sense of confidence in her tone, as she struggles to answer the provided questions, and she can therefore be viewed as ... • 3. The Truth About Human Trafficking The Truth About Human Trafficking Human Trafficking is a modern day form of slavery involving the illegal trade of people for exploitation or commercial gain (Human Trafficking). The term human trafficking evolved from slavery in the early 1900 s and continued to become a global market over the past 100 years. There are several different types of human trafficking such as forced labor, sexual exploitation, people smuggling, and the harvesting of organs for commercial profit (Types of Human Trafficking.). Victims of human trafficking are stripped of their identity and are denied their natural, human rights. There are a total of 27 million enslaved women, men, and children all over the world. The average age of a trafficking victim around the world is 12 years old (Human Trafficking The A21 Campaign). As a society that values an individual s freedom and rights, the awareness and consequences associated with human trafficking must be increased, as many governments do not contribute enough resources in order to combat the various forms of human trafficking that occurs among nations. Human trafficking began when the traditional form of slavery evolved into the forced prostitution of women. In 1904, the International Agreement for the Suppression of White Slave Traffic was put into place. This law was created to prevent women and children from being trafficked into sex trade. The League of Nations was created in 1927 to discuss international issues, such as human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Hotel California Poem Analysis Music as Poetry Essay The song, Hotel California , by the Eagles, is a very poetic song that uses imagery, and symbolism to bring out the theme in an indirect way of the speaker s personal issues of life. The Eagles use imagery to set the mood and tone of the song. Along with many aspects of symbolism to input a lot of double meaning throughout the whole song. With both imagery and symbolism incorporated, many fans or people who have heard of this song would believe that the theme of this song is about a lonely traveler trying to break his own temptations. In the first verse of the introduction of the song, imagery is used for the audience to imagine what exactly is being told. As almost as if it was a setting in a play or a scene in a movie. In the first verse the first two set of lines says, On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair. Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air. (Eagles, Lines 1 2). One can already imagine the speaker driving down a dark desert highway, with his windows rolled down perhaps, and smelling the warm air full of desert flowers, or maybe he is smelling marijuana in the air. This could be because colitas is Spanish slang for a bud of cannabis, but it could also mean desert flowers, (Philpot). These first two lines already sets the mood of a restless traveler who needs a place to stay for the night after a long day of driving. It also hints that there could possibly be drugs or other temptations in this song considering colitas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Congress Controversial Branch Congress is perhaps the most despised branch in our government. It is widely considered broken and outdated, and many believe it ignores the wants of the American people. In this paper, I will discuss Congress in depth and shed light on this controversial branch. • 6. What The Best College Students Do By Ken Bain Failure = Success When I look at the word failure I didn t see success. But that slowly changed as I read the book What the Best College Students Do by Ken Bain Chapter four. Bain, for me and I m sure many other, have changed our view point on failure being a bad thing. He instead expressed failure as an opportunity to learn something. (121) As infants we grow and develop, we learn to walk by falling down a couple hundred times, and we learn to speak by babbling. By trying to walk, and trying to talk, we may fail at first. As an infant, you cannot give up when you are face to face with failure. You must get up and try again to learn. In the book, What the Best College Students Do by Ken Bain he uses people s experiences and research to explain why failure is an opportunity to learn something new, rather than seeing failure as something bad. He asserts people who become highly creative and productive learn to acknowledge failures, even to embrace them, and to explore and learn from them. (100) Failure is important. If we did not get up and try again as infants, we would not be where we are today. The main assertion in this chapter is that failure is a life lesson. Failing is constantly unwelcomed in our lives. When we are unsuccessful we tend not to think, oh this is going to be a great learning experience. Bain takes a simple approach to explain what good comes out of failure. He uses Group A, and Group B. In this experiment, there is two different groups one being A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Differences Between Troy And The Iliad As the last scene of movie Troy fades, we see the words inspired by Homer s The Iliad . There is no doubt that the Iliad is one of the greatest poems of all time and, therefore, it has inspired multiple works of art over almost three thousand years of its existence. One of these works is the film Troy, which attempts to make an adaptation that reflects the Greek culture and appeals to the modern audience at the same time. In this essay Troy will be compared with the Iliadthrough examination of time spans, intended audiences, portrayals of Helen, Achilles and Hector, main themes of both sources and conveyed messages. One significant difference between the Iliad and Troy is the timespan. The Iliad is not a story of a Trojan war, but a story of a hero s wrath. The time span it covers is only a few weeks in the tenth year of the siege of Troy. Homer chooses to focus on events that occurred during a quarrel of King Agamemnon, king of Mycenae and brother of Menelaus, and Achilles, the most powerful warrior of the Achaean army. Homer doesn t go into detail about other events and battles, as the story of the Trojan War was well known to the Greek society because it has been told and retold by bards for numerous times and the general plot was still fresh in the minds of the Greeks. For his poem to stand out, Homer had to be original, so he didn t tell his audience about the war as a whole, but rather spotlighted the wrath of an individual hero, Achilles. Troy,... America s foreign language curriculum displays a more than lackluster approach in relation to those upheld in other countries. Most of the time, these courses are either taught by some athletic coach who could really care less if you know how to conjugate the verb ir correctly, or by an overly passionate foreigner who spends the class time intensively explaining said conjugations to a class full of seniors who just want to graduate. As people age, they move into different social roles that provides them with multiple identities. These transitions that we go through tend to be linked with age, in the sense that as a society we expect something called age norms which refers to the idea that there are appropriate ages for making these various life course transitions. There are two types of transitions, normative and non normative. Normative is when something happens that is expected like starting to drive or having a high school graduation, where non normative is unexpected such as death or winning the lottery. Throughout this paper I will focus on what I want my future to look like, and I will look at what I can currently do to help make this happen. I will also look at my past transitions in life to show what has led me to be the person that I am today. While I find it hard to think about my future, I do know that I want to live a healthy, active and meaningful life until the day that I die. While our life course can be unpredictable, we can still set goals that we want to accomplish. I already know that my central sources of meaning will be my family and friends. Despite being a devout Catholic, Monica chooses to delay the baptism of her son until later in life. While this would be unusual for a contemporary member of the Catholic church, Monica believed it was in the best interest of Augustine to defer his baptism, allowing him to purge himself of his sinful and ungodly desires present during his youth with baptism received at an older age. Another question is whether or not nuclear weapons had revolutionized warfare and the use of ground forces. Mahnken writes that The advent of nuclear weapons and strategic air power appeared to call into question the utility of traditional ground forces (Mahnken, loc. 665). While nuclear weapons were certainly an advantage in warfare, not every situation is going to call for the use of a nuclear weapon. History has shown that even in the most recent of conflicts, militaries continue to rely on ground forces. Perhaps the advancement of aircraft and their technologies have been much more crucial to the changes in modern day militaries and how they fight wars. However, history has shown that even recent conflicts continue to rely on ground forces to some extent. The use of air power may have taken over, but nuclear advancements seem to be of little consequence today. Air bombings and the use of smart weapons has dramatically increased, but troops still hit the ground. As previously stated, Mahnken proposes that technology is not only shaped by culture, but that technology itself shapes culture. Changes in higher education prove him to be right. They use her image in their culture often. An example would be how they name their moon launchings after her. In Chinese minds, the moon is associated with gentleness and brightness, expressing the beautiful yearnings of the Chinese. (Cultural China) The people in China see Chang e in the same way they see the moon, peaceful, gentle, and bright. She is very important and brings joy to the Chinese people. • 27. Essay On Reverse Discrimination Discrimination: treating a person or group differently when the reason is not relevant (Kaye and Thomson). A double standard is created when a rule or regulation does not fairly apply to all groups. An example of this is racism s double standard that has been created while trying to amend to unfairness created by racism. These double standard are hostile to attempts of true equality due to the harm it causes to the media/justice system create reverse discrimination, and affect college admissions unfairly. • 28. Parliamentary Protests Of The United States The threat presented by extra parliamentary protest in the years 1815 20 was plagued by weak and divided leadership which limited it from driving results that met its full potential. However, there were also other factors that served to undermine progress such as the actions of the government in repressing dissenters and the low level of available logistical resources . Evan tells us in Source 3 that the movement lacked coherent leadership. His view supports the argument for the threat being undermined by the weakness of having too many orators captivated by the sound of their own voices of whom not enough bridged the gap between rhetoric and reality. Being unable to convey the actions people would be required to take for change within their messages reduced the movement almost to a talking shop of radical leaders, carried away without realistic planning . We can see the fruits of their failed labours in the way the government had little difficulty in handling any protests and this repeated derailing meant there was rarely a leadership united enough to effectively inspire confidence. On the other hand, Thompson deems radicalism to have assumed more conscious, organised and sophisticated forms , going so far as to call it a heroic age , which somewhat refutes the criticisms of inadequacy in the power of the speeches made. Whether it is the way they are treated by prison officials, voting while in jail or when they get let free, and the way they are treated for the religion they follow. They are overlooked by people who have right just because they are locked up and serving time. Have you ever asked yourself how are criminals treated while they are serving time? Well if you have ever asked yourself this questions the answer is poorly. Criminals are treated so poorly by prison officials. In the article Prisoner Abuse: How Different are U.S. Prisons? they discuss how prisoners are constantly being abused by their guards. The author states in regards to the way prison inmates are treated that, In recent years, U.S. prison inmates have been beaten with fists and batons, stomped on, kicked, shot, stunned with electronic devices, doused with chemical sprays, choked, and slammed face first onto concrete floors by the officers whose job it is to guard them. . This is stuff people would usually be sent to jail for doing but because prisoners are not taken as seriously as other people it is just overturned. Already, by the end of the second century, the Christian Church was well established as an institution with a system of hierarchical authority based on the Tradition, the Sacred Scriptures, and its creed. However, at the same time the Roman Empire began trembling with civil wars and danger on the borders. By this time, governors began elaborating legislations against Christians.
