A CORRECT DIAGNOSIS IS THREE-
FOURTHS THE REMEDY
Mahatma Gandhi
Vitality testing is an important aid in the diagnosis of pulp disease and apical
periodontitis. If the pulp is deemed to be severely compromised as a result of
the diagnostic testing, then endodontic treatment may be indicated.
Various diagnostic modalities have been in use since decades but newer
modalities of endodontic diagnosis have taken the center stage recently.
DIAGNOSTIC GADGETS
• ULTRASOUND DOPPLER OR COLOR POWER DOPPLER
• CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CBCT)
• Color power doppler flowmetry allows the presence and direction of blood
flow within the tissue of interest to be observed.
• The intensity of doppler signal is represented by changes in real time on a
graph (Doppler) and is also shown in the form of color spots on the gray
scale image (color).

Negative doppler

CONE BEAM COMPUTED
TOMOGRAPHY
• It is a new technique that produces
3D digital imaging at reduced cost
with less radiation for the patient.
• It delivers faster and easier
acquisition.
• The modality uses a cone beam
instead of a fan shaped beam,
acquiring images of the entire
volume.

VISUALIZATION AND ILLUMINATION
• DENTAL LOUPES
• MICROSCOPES
PRISMATIC LOUPES (WIDE FIELD LOUPES)
• The newest advent to the visualisation of dental structures are
the wide field loupes
• These are 3 or 4 compound loupes and often of Keplerian
design.
• They have higher level of magnification and greater optical
clarity which provide magnification upto 6X.
EyeMag Pro Loupes (Carl Ziess)
It’s a Flip-up loupe system and generates a
brilliant stereoscopic image
Two systems are available: titanium eyeglass
frame (F) and comfortable headband (S)
Provides a magnification of upto 6.5X
MICROSCOPES
Microscopes are available as floor standing, wall or ceiling mounted units, depending
on personal preferences and possible locations in the operatory.

FlexioMotionTM adapter for digital camcorders.
3. Asepsis: Splash protection for objective lens and vision guard drapes for
sterile work environment.
ACCESS OPENING
Electrically operated handpiece
Dental handpieces are one of the most vital pillar systems in dental practice. In the
recet years handpieces have become more efficient, ergonomic and user friendly.
NSK S-MAX pico
• Developed for operation of
minimal intervention.
• The ultra mini head and
super slim handpiece design
is the result of fine NSK
precision engineering,
allowing a wider view of the
operational field and greater
flexibility for dexterity.
DENTSPLY Midwest
Stylus ATC
• Includes two ground breaking
technologies called the Speed
Sensing Intelligence(SSI) and
Superior Turbine Suspension
(STS).

APEX LOCATORS
The newest addition to the vast array of apex locators available in the market
are the ones that feature the sixth generation.
Adaptive Apex Locator continuously defines humidity of the canal and
immediately adapt to dry or wet canal.
Measurements provides for eliminating the necessity of drying or
moistening of the canal.
It aims to achieve a high degree of precision in the presence of blood, or
additionally imported liquid/ sodium hypochlorite while manipulating dry
canals.
IRRIGATION DEVICES
Photon induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) is based on the direct shock
wave generated by Er:YAG laser in a liquid irrigant.
The laser system is equipped with a fibreoptic delivery tip and subablative
parameters to produce the desired effect.
1. Access opening is done using a hard tissue laser
2. Canal preparation is done using minimal instrumentation
3. PIPS is used and cleaning is enhanced
4. Cleaning with SWEEPS mode and shock wave generation.
SELF ADJUSTING FILE (SAF)
It is defined as a no pressure irrigation system with sonic activation and a
scrubbing effect.
This filing and irrigation method results in a clean canal surface, even in the
cul-de-sac apical part of the canal, which is commonly considered the most
difficult part of the canal to clean.
• The hollow design of SAF is used to provide a continuous flow of fresh
sodium hypochlorite throughout the file operation.
• The SAF is equipped with a rotating hub, to which a silicone tube is
attached.
• The other end of the tube is attached to the irrigation pump.
VATEA peristaltic pump
is operated by
rechargeable battery
Pump and all its
connectors are
compatible with any
irrigating solution
(sodium hypochlorite =
500ml)
Control panel allows the
operator to set the flow
rate between 1 and 10
ml/min
The typical
recommended setting of
flow rate is 4 ml/min
This system thus brings
about effective irrigant
transfer, soft tissue
debridement and
removal of smear layer
ENDODONTIC MOTORS
The latest advancements in endodontic motors are the
incorporation of endo motors with apex locators.

CONCLUSION
In the 21st century, as long as basic principles of endodontic
therapy are followed, the equipment and tools need
constant evolution with one step better than before to
deliver enhanced treatment and better ergonomic
outcomes.
