What is aircraft launch system?
It is a system which
is setup over aircraft
carriers for launching
aircrafts.
Need of aircraft launch system:
Aircraft needs some very high speed before take-off but due to
lack of long runway on deck of aircraft carriers it can’t achieve
that speed by running over it so an external pull is given to the
aircrafts so that take-off speed can be achieved over that short
runway.
Types of aircraft launching system:
 The Flush Deck Catapult
 The steam catapult
 The electromagnetic launcher
1. The flush deck catapult
In this technique an external pull is
given with the help of an movable
desk which push the aircraft from its
backside and the required take off
speed is achieved.
2. The steam catapult
The steam is drawn from the ship's boilers to the catapult wet steam accumulator,
where it is stored at the desired pressure. From the wet accumulator, it is directed
to the launch valve, and provides the energy to launch aircraft.
3. Electromagnetic aircraft launch system
EMALS uses a surge of
electricity to generate
electrical currents with
strong magnetic fields.
These fields propel a
carriage down the runway.
This carriage is attached
to the airplane and flings it
into the air.

Linear induction launcher-
The linear induction launcher is an air-cored electromagnetic
coil launcher operating on the principle of the induction
motor. Polyphase excitation of the coils constituting the barrel
is designed to create an electromagnetic wave packet, which
travels with increasing velocity from the breech to the
muzzle. The projectile is a hollow conducting cylinder
(sleeve) carrying the payload within it. Relative motion (slip)
of the wave packet with respect to the projectile induces
azimuthal currents in the sleeve that interacts with the
exciting magnetic field to produce both propulsive and
centring forces.
coil gun
• A coil gun is a type of projectile accelerator consisting of one or
more coils used as electromagnets in the configuration of a linear
motor that accelerate a ferromagnetic or conducting projectile to
high velocity.
• The coils are switched on and off in a precisely timed sequence,
causing the projectile to be accelerated quickly along the barrel via
magnetic forces.
Railgun
The railgun uses a pair of parallel
conductors or rails, along which a
sliding armature is accelerated by
the electromagnetic effects of a
current that flows down one rail,
into the armature and then back
along the other rail.
Advantages
• It accelerates aircraft more smoothly, putting less stress on their airframes
• Higher Launch Energy
• Increased Service Life of Carrier Based Aircraft
• Reduced Volume and Weight
• Elimination of Complex Mechanisms
Disadvantages
• 1 SCR can’t handle the amount of current that pass through it which results in
failing of it.
• Over heating of SCR due to very high current passing through it.

  • 3. What is aircraft launch system? It is a system which is setup over aircraft carriers for launching aircrafts.
  • 4. Need of aircraft launch system: Aircraft needs some very high speed before take-off but due to lack of long runway on deck of aircraft carriers it can’t achieve that speed by running over it so an external pull is given to the aircrafts so that take-off speed can be achieved over that short runway.
  • 5. Types of aircraft launching system:  The Flush Deck Catapult  The steam catapult  The electromagnetic launcher
  • 6. 1. The flush deck catapult In this technique an external pull is given with the help of an movable desk which push the aircraft from its backside and the required take off speed is achieved.
  • 7. 2. The steam catapult The steam is drawn from the ship's boilers to the catapult wet steam accumulator, where it is stored at the desired pressure. From the wet accumulator, it is directed to the launch valve, and provides the energy to launch aircraft.
  • 8. 3. Electromagnetic aircraft launch system EMALS uses a surge of electricity to generate electrical currents with strong magnetic fields. These fields propel a carriage down the runway. This carriage is attached to the airplane and flings it into the air.
  • 10. Linear induction launcher- The linear induction launcher is an air-cored electromagnetic coil launcher operating on the principle of the induction motor. Polyphase excitation of the coils constituting the barrel is designed to create an electromagnetic wave packet, which travels with increasing velocity from the breech to the muzzle. The projectile is a hollow conducting cylinder (sleeve) carrying the payload within it. Relative motion (slip) of the wave packet with respect to the projectile induces azimuthal currents in the sleeve that interacts with the exciting magnetic field to produce both propulsive and centring forces.
  • 11. coil gun • A coil gun is a type of projectile accelerator consisting of one or more coils used as electromagnets in the configuration of a linear motor that accelerate a ferromagnetic or conducting projectile to high velocity. • The coils are switched on and off in a precisely timed sequence, causing the projectile to be accelerated quickly along the barrel via magnetic forces.
  • 12. Railgun The railgun uses a pair of parallel conductors or rails, along which a sliding armature is accelerated by the electromagnetic effects of a current that flows down one rail, into the armature and then back along the other rail.
  • 13. Advantages • It accelerates aircraft more smoothly, putting less stress on their airframes • Higher Launch Energy • Increased Service Life of Carrier Based Aircraft • Reduced Volume and Weight • Elimination of Complex Mechanisms
  • 14. Disadvantages • 1 SCR can’t handle the amount of current that pass through it which results in failing of it. • Over heating of SCR due to very high current passing through it.
