Agricultural Productivity in Ethiopia - Challenges for Future Growth
1) Agricultural productivity in Ethiopia has grown steadily in recent years, driven mainly by expansion of cultivated area and increases in traditional inputs like labor and livestock. However, growth in use of modern inputs like fertilizer and improved seeds has been slower.
2) Analysis of national and household-level data show total factor productivity has increased, but at varying rates. TFP growth was 3.7% based on national data but declined 2.6% based on household data.
3) There remains significant potential to further increase efficiency and TFP through greater use of modern inputs and improved agricultural practices. However, challenges remain around adoption rates, input availability and affordability.
Pasture in Bangladesh
Supplying green grass is very important for sustainable livestock production and pasture is a cheap and good source of feed for livestock to maintain their productivity.In Bangladesh there are some pasture found in the milk pocket area mainly native pasture. Livestock population is increasing rapidly in Bangladesh but overall production performance is decreasing due to lack of quality feed for animal. As Bangladesh has a lot of fellow land, so there is an opportunity to develop pasture for livestock.

- Dairy cattle numbers reached 5.9 million, up 5% from 2008, driven by a 13% increase in South Island numbers.
- Sheep numbers fell to 32.4 million, down 5% from 2008.
- The area planted in wine grapes rose to 33,400 hectares, up 13% from 2007.
During the year ended June 30, 2009:
- 28.0 million lambs were tailed, 10% down from 2008.
- The area of wheat harvested increased 27% to 53,900 hectares and barley increased 15% to 77,700 hectares.
Does Aerial Interseeded Cover Crop
This study evaluated whether aerial interseeding of winter rye cover crops could ameliorate the impacts of harvesting corn residue at high rates over three years on soil properties. Corn residue was harvested at an average rate of 70.6% each year, leaving the soil vulnerable to wind erosion. The interseeded winter rye produced variable biomass but did not significantly improve soil properties or impact corn yields compared to no cover crop. While the cover crops did not fully offset residue removal impacts, their growth likely reduced wind erosion risks by covering exposed soil during residue harvesting.

Addressing land degradation and desertification

Global agricultural output will need to double by 2050 to meet demand for food, feed, fiber and fuel according to the Global Agricultural Productivity Report. The report examines total factor productivity and introduces the GAP Index to measure agricultural productivity. It also outlines policy priorities for sustainable food and agriculture systems to achieve the needed increases in output.

Two thirds of Africa's arable lands could be lost by 2025 due to climate change negatively impacting soils. Soil erosion, loss of organic carbon, and nutrient depletion are key threats. Africa loses 3% of agricultural GDP annually from soil and nutrient loss. Small family farms dominate agriculture in Africa. Climate change is projected to significantly reduce agricultural productivity in Africa by 2080, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Addressing land degradation and desertification
This document discusses the potential for large-scale land restoration in Africa through agroforestry practices. Land degradation is a significant problem in India, affecting over 120 million hectares or about 29% of the total land area. The main types of degradation are water erosion, wind erosion, salt-affected soils, and acid soils. About 64 million hectares of crop land is also affected.
To address land degradation, the document proposes developing detailed land resource inventories to identify appropriate land management and usage practices for different agro-ecological zones. This includes assessing soil and water conservation needs, irrigation potential, and recommending suitable cropping systems. Site-specific plans aim to boost rainfed agriculture, manage degraded hills and plateau lands, and restore coastal and floodplain areas. Farmland Loss in Dane County
This document summarizes findings from a study on farmland loss and farm operations in Dane County, Wisconsin between 1980-2030. It analyzes changes in agricultural land use over time, amount of farmland lost to development, and projections for future land needs. Major findings include that 95,000 acres of crop and pasture land were converted between 1980-2000, with 37,000 acres lost to development. An additional 10,000 acres of prime farmland were developed between 2000-2005. The document also examines the diversity of agricultural lands, operations, and economic productivity in the county as well as ecological services provided by farmland.

Cropping Pattern and Agricultural Productivity of Pindar Basin, Garhwal Himalaya
This document analyzes the cropping patterns and agricultural productivity of the Pindar Basin in the Garhwal Himalaya region of India. It finds that the main crops grown are rice, wheat, barley, mandua and sava, which make up about 92% of cultivated land. Wheat is the most important crop across most of the basin. Cropping is split between Rabi season crops like wheat, peas and oilseeds grown from October to May, and Kharif season crops like rice, millets and potatoes grown during the summer monsoon. Agricultural productivity is influenced by physical factors like climate and terrain as well as socioeconomic factors. LAND Issues in PAKISTAN
Land degradation is a major issue in Pakistan, with 80% of land being arid or semi-arid. Unsustainable agricultural practices like overuse of water and chemicals, combined with deforestation, urbanization, and climate change have led to soil erosion, salinity, water logging, and desertification. This degradation reduces land productivity and biodiversity. Solutions include sustainable agriculture, afforestation, soil/water conservation, drainage improvement, and combating poverty. However, effective land policies and coordination between government and non-government organizations are still needed to properly address land degradation in Pakistan.
KAGERA TAMP Overview presentation
The Kagera Transboundary Agro-ecosystem Management Programme aims to adopt an integrated ecosystem approach for sustainable land management in the Kagera River Basin shared by 4 countries. The project will restore degraded land, improve productivity, promote carbon sequestration, conserve agrobiodiversity, enhance food security and livelihoods, and protect transboundary waters. It will implement improved land practices on 100,000 hectares benefiting over 120,000 people and build capacity on sustainable land management.
The African Context: emissions, projections and mitigation plans
This document discusses greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation plans related to agriculture in Africa. It finds that agriculture accounts for 64% of Africa's total greenhouse gas emissions. Within the agricultural sector, emissions from agricultural soils and enteric fermentation from livestock are the largest sources. The event organised by the International Institute for Environment and Development aimed to share the findings of its research to inform a wider debate on how REDD+ is contributing to addressing the drivers of land use and land use change.

Deforestation in Pakistan
This document discusses deforestation in Pakistan, its causes and impacts. The 4th AfSP workshop: Botswana

Deforestation
May 2024. Deforestation is the permanent removal of trees from forests. It includes land clearing for farming, livestock, and timber use for fuel, building, and manufacturing.
Causes of Deforestation:
(1) Natural Causes of deforestation include wildfires, hurricanes, droughts, invasive species, tree diseases, and parasites.
(2) Man-Made causes of deforestation include logging, agriculture, livestock farming, wood plantations, energy and mining activities, and urbanization.
Effects of Deforestation include:
(1) Biodiversity Loss: Animals lose their habitat and are unable to survive.
(2) Soil Degradation: Loss of trees to fertilize the soil.
(3) Global Warming: Tree logging releases carbon stored in trees into the atmosphere.
