This document discusses the effects of urbanization on ecosystems. It notes that urbanization involves clearing land and vegetation to build residential and industrial structures. This habitat destruction negatively impacts both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems by reducing and fragmenting habitats. It also causes various forms of pollution like water, air, land, heat and noise pollution which further degrade ecosystems. The document concludes that while urbanization is important for the economy, its impacts must be controlled, and recommends measures to reduce these effects on the environment like enforcing standards, developing infrastructure in rural areas, and education.
Human Settlement provides people electricity, houses, food, water etc., but we can't deny that it has also unnecessary effects to our environment. This powerpoint presentation shows the negative results of Human Settlement as well as the ways of minimizing the problems caused by the settlement.

Urbanization and its effect on environmentHILLFORT
Urbanisation and its effect on environment explains both positive and negative impacts in a broad sense. I took help from many study materials available over internet and library and tried to make a brief out of them. Hope, this presentation will help new learners to visualise the real scenario. Students of Urban Planning, Architecture, Environmental Planning, Law and sociology can use it for their reference.
This presentation discuss about the human impact on ecosystem, planetary responses to changes and imbalance in the various ecological systems. The main cause of ecological change is the rapid increase in human population which ultimately utilize the non-renewable resources to fulfil their luxurious living standards and to discover various technologies to generate energy.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – A CRITICAL
ENVIRONMENTAL APPRAISAL by DR. I.D. MALLDepartment of Chemical Engg.Indian Institute of Technology, RoorkeeRoorkee- 247667
it is about the environmental issues done by human being and spoil our environment.
here i present some issues which is dangerous for our environment.
effects of this issues are also mentioned in ppt this ppt is useful for people who want a change in our environment.
what is Ecological Imbalance and what are the ways of environmental protection and conservation? what are the factors affecting the ecological imbalance? explained in detail with graphics
this ppt explained different topics related to Impact of Energy sources such of the topics are Social, Economical and Environmental impacts of conventional and non conventional energy sources, health hazard, bio-diversity loss, Battery hazard, nuclear hazard. It explain it in very easy and clear way. I wish it could help you to gain some knowledge. For any queries you can contact me. thank you!
Social, Economical and Environmental impacts of conventional and non conventional energy sources, health hazard, bio diversity loss, Emission hazard, Ozone layer depletion, smog, Battery hazard, nuclear hazard
Environmental issues are any such issues created due to human activities and cause harm to the environment. Environmental issues are harmful effects of human activity on the biophysical environment.
They relate to the anthropogenic effects on the natural environment, which are loosely divided into causes, effects and mitigation, noting that effects are interconnected and can cause new effects.

3. INTRODUCTION
• Urbanization is a population shift from rural to urban areas
• Towns and cities are formed and become larger as more
people live and work in these cities.
• Large areas of land and vegetations are cleared to put up
residential and industrial structures.
• Ecosystem is a biological community of interacting
organisms and their environment
6. “The impacts of urbanization on native species are
poorly studied, but educating a highly urbanized
human population about these impacts can greatly
improve species conservation in all Ecosystems.”
(McKinny 2002)
7. EFFECTS OF URBANIZATION
• Economic Effects
- Employment
- High cost of living
• Social Effects
- Provision of institutions like hospitals, banks and schools
- Increase crime rates
- Living in slums
8. EFFECTS OF URBANIZATION (CONT’D)
• Health Effects
- Poor Sanitation
- Outbreak of contagious diseases
• Environmental Effects
- Urban heat islands
- Pollution
9. EFFECT OF URBANIZATION ON THE ECOSYSTEM
Habitat destruction (Terrestrial and aquatic)
• Terrestrial
- Loss of existing vegetation
- Fragmentation of habitats and vegetation
- Competition for resources
10. • Aquatic
- Building on water bodies
- Construction of bridges
- Release of pollutants from construction sites into water bodies
Pollution (Water, Air, Land, Heat and Noise)
• Water pollution
- Pollution during construction and waste disposal
- Eutrophication
11. • Air pollution
-The quality of air is affected and this can result in respiratory
diseases
-The release of gases like sulphur and nitrogen into the atmosphere
can result in acid rain through reaction with atmospheric water
• Land pollution
- Landfill sites
- Leakages from underground fuel and septic tanks
12. • Heat pollution
- Urban heat islands
- Release of hot fluids into water bodies
• Noise pollution
- Traffics
-Hawkers
- Industries
-Households
16. According to McKinny (2002), studies has shown that
animal species are most affected by urbanization. He
stated that the level of urbanization determines the
effect on the ecosystem. He concluded that moderate
urbanization rather increase species richness in plant
because of introduction by human activities, but this
reduces with high levels of urbanization and
disturbance.
17. CONCLUSION
• Urbanization is of great importance to the economy,
but must be controlled
• The impacts of urbanization are very significant on the
ecosystem
• There should be measures to reduce the effects of
urbanization on the environment.
