Sec 1 Exp - Tropical Rainforests
Tropical rainforests are found in areas with high temperatures between 20-30 degrees Celsius and high rainfall between 1000-2000 mm annually. They have 3 main layers - the emergent layer with the tallest trees up to 50m high and buttress roots, the canopy layer 15-30m tall that blocks 70% of sunlight, and the undergrowth layer that receives very little sunlight. Rainforests are threatened by deforestation for agriculture, logging and development which causes extinction of plants and animals. Singapore once had more rainforests but they were cleared for population and industry growth, though reserves like the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve protect some remaining forest.

Eutrophication is the process by which a body of water becomes overly enriched with minerals and nutrients which induces excessive growth of algae. Reference Service Models Vision 2013

It was their Career Week and the talk was meant to help students entering their career choice class/year make the right career choice, as that would determined the subjects they would be taught for the rest of their stay in secondary school.
Interestingly, the event was attended by students from neighbouring secondary schools, and they were grateful for the insight into the LIS profession, as well as the opportunity.

Abstract:
Fake news presents real problems. While misinformation has always existed, the internet and social media have allowed it to proliferate and wield unprecedented influence on public opinion and discourse. In the United States, fake news helped to determine the 2016 presidential election and it continues to inform national and state policies in harmful, counterproductive ways. Information professionals, and particularly librarians, are seizing this moment to demonstrate the power of their expertise by formulating new tools that can help the public navigate the so-called ‘post-truth world’. These tools capitalize on librarians’ command of information literacy and promote a skills-based approach that is not only essential to the foundations of research but vital for the very well-being of democracy. The presenters will discuss the different tools that librarians and other information professionals are creating such as research guides, videos, infographics, apps, and other types of media; evaluate the challenges and limitations of existing tools and approaches; and consider future implications and actions for librarians.
Library Science Students and Digital Libraries

A survey of 57 students found that they typically use digital libraries less than twice a week, mainly for academic purposes. The major influence on library futures is the changing character of their user communities. As patterns of research, learning and personal development change in a network environment so library services need to change. At the same time, libraries are focused on engaging with their communities more strongly - getting into their work and learning flows. This means that libraries are becoming more unlike each other, they are diverging as they meet the specific needs of their communities. Research libraries diverge from academic libraries, and each is different from urban public libraries, and so on.
At the same time, at a broader level libraries are experiencing similar pressures. The need to engage more strongly with their communities. The need to assess what they do. The need to configure space around experiences rather than around collections. Libraries are converging around some of these issues.
This presentation will consider the future of libraries from the point of view of convergence and divergence between types of libraries.
