The document discusses the ecological restoration of limestone quarry sites in the Mussoorie hills of India. It provides background on the large-scale quarrying that degraded the ecology. After quarrying ceased in the 1980s, various agencies initiated restoration efforts including planting pioneer species. The study assessed the floristic composition of one restored site, Chunakhala mine. It found that the tree layer was dominated by Cuppressus torulosa and the shrub layer by Lepidagathis cuspidate. Herb diversity and species richness were highest in the shrub layer. The restoration efforts led to revegetation and return of ecological parameters across the three vegetation strata.

Floristic assessment plays a crucial role in managing and conserving phytodiversity. Thisstudy tried to determine the floristic composition, woody structure and socio-economic importance of the legume flora in the commune of Mayahi. We used plot method based on systematic sampling approach to inventory legume species within the parklands in September 2012. We recorded 55 legume species belonging to 24 genera in 56 relevés. Fabaceae is the dominant family among the legume botanical families in the parklands of the commune of Mayahi. The average woody legume density is 62 individuals per hectare in the commune of Mayahi. The woody legume species of highest average density are Faidherbia albida and Piliostigma reticulatum. While the total basal area of legumes of the commune is 1.12m2 / ha in the Mayahi commune. The crown cover varies according to the vegetation types but it is higher in the Goulbi N’kaba forest reserve. Legume flora provides a myriad of benefits to the people of Mayahi. The present study recommends furtherresearch that examines the impact of human activities on the legume flora of the parklands in the commune of Mayahi.

Abstract— Thinning and fertilization of forest plantations are forestry practices that are necessary to obtain an increase in the annual volume growth, mean increment and periodic increment (AMI and API) which allow shortening the commercial shift maintaining the same volumes at the time of harvest. In this study, the effect of thinning and fertilization on the growth and increase in Pinuspatula plantations was evaluated, which were established in 1998 in Huayacocotla, Veracruz, Mexico. A 22 factorial experiment was set up in the plantation in order to evaluate the thinning and fertilization factors with two levels each. The experimental unit was a 10x10 m plot. Three repetitions were established per treatment. An residual basal area of 21m2 ha-1was obtained in the thinned plots of the plantation. The average basal area in the unthinned plots was 42 m2 ha-1. The fertilization doses were: 1.4; 0.4; 8.34 kg of urea, calcium triple superphosphate and potassium sulfate, respectively. Fertilization (treatment 3) increased the volume and the AMI 2012, 2013 and 2014. Thinning (treatment 2) tended to increase the API slightly.
Population Structure and Threats to Sustainable Management of Woody Plant Spe...Innspub Net
This study was conducted to assess population structure and threat to the sustainable management of woody species in the various ago-ecosystems in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area (LGA) Katsina State, Nigeria. Purposive and stratified random sampling techniques were used to collect data from 21 randomly demarcated 100m × 100m sample plots. All woody plant species found in the sample plots with stem diameter >2 cm at 20cm above ground, were recorded. Population structure was summarized by diameter classes. For the identification of threats, field and questionnaire surveys were used. A total of 50 questionnaires were distributed at ten questionnaires per ward in five out of the 11 wards in the LGA. The highest numbers (350) of small diameter trees (0.1-1.0cm) were recorded in the agrosilvopastoral system. This was followed by silvopastoral and agrisilviculture systems with 89 and 85, respectively. However, the highest number of large diameter woody tree species was recorded in the silvopastoral system followed by agrosilvopastoral and agrisilviculture systems. The regular reverse J-shaped and fairly regular reverse J-shaped size class distribution observed for agrosilvopastoral and silvopastoral respectively, suggest a recuperating population. Over exploitation, debarking, de-branching, root- digging, leaf harvesting, seed harvesting, poor regeneration, slow rate of growth, wind effect and bush burning were the major threats to sustainable management of woody plant species in the study area. The implications of our findings for sustainable management of woody plant species in the study area are discussed and recommendations made.

— The aim of the paper was to present the influence of plant density and different types of organic mulch on growth and yield of Romain lettuce. The field experiment was carried out in 2014 in the experimental field of University of Forestry – Sofia, with Romaine lettuce cv. Yellow beauty. The seedlings were planted at a distance of 30 x 30 cm and two different schemes were tested: parallel planting to form a 4-row bed and a chess planting to form a 7-row bed. For the purpose of the study were used different organic mulches, which were waste products from organic agriculture: barley straw (BS), well-rotted horse manure (HM), walnut wood sawdust (WS) and grass windrow (GW) and non-mulched control plots (NMC). The mulching materials were spread manually in a 5-6 cm thick layer, after strengthen the seedlings of Romain lettuce. On the 60th day after planting was the beginning of harvesting. It was found out that the seven-row bed and mulching influenced growth and yield of Romain lettuce. Mulching with HM has a significant effect on growth and yield. In the cultivation of lettuce in combination with horse manure mulch and seven-row bed, the yield increased by 18% compared to the non-mulched control in the same planting scheme and was 2.3 times higher than the non-mulched control in a four-row bed. Abstract— An experiment was conducted to determine the effectiveness of soil moisture conservation techniques on improving sorghum yield in a semi-arid rural area of Swaziland. The four treatments were; planting sorghum on flat soil (F), planting on tied ridges (T), planting on mulched soil (M) and planting on a combination of tied ridges and mulch (TM). Sorghum planted on flat soil was used as control in the experiment. The sorghum variety 8625 was planted. The experiment was complete randomized design and each treatment was replicated three times. The parameters measured were; grain yield, total biomass yield, soil moisture suction and grain moisture content at harvest. The grain yields from all the other treatments (mulching, tied ridges, tied ridges with mulching) were higher than those of the control (flat planting). The grain yield from TM was the highest at an average of 10.002 tons/ha. It was significantly different from that of T and F (p<0.05).>0.05). The results showed that a combination of tied ridges and mulching provided superior results in terms of grain yield, dry matter yield and soil moisture suction. Mulching and tied ridges also yielded results that were better than the control (F).

The development of a growing system involves knowledge of soil quality and key aspects relating to planting density among others. In general, the understanding and definition of sustainable soil fertility management practices is necessary in enabling better use of soil resources and ultimately improvement of crop productivity. This study was conducted in the communities of Toumodi and Azaguie to assess the influence of The Lippia multiflora culture on the initial soil characteristics depending on the study site and planting density. At each of the study sites and ten (10) months after planting, twelve (12) pedoological pits, 60 cm x 50 cm x 60 cm, were opened in the immediate environment of the Lippia multiflora plants, at the plots of density treatments 4444 plants.ha-1, 20000 plants.ha-1 and 40,000 plants.ha-1, at the rate of three (3) profiles per treatment. A total of thirty-two (32) composite soil samples were collected per study site at the level of the different treatments, i.e. sixteen (16) samples per layer considered, equivalent to four (4) samples per treatment. The results obtained indicate that; after ten (10) months of cultivation, there was at the 0 - 20 cm layers of the soil, of each of the experimental plots, a decrease in the content of clay, organic matter and basic cations as well as acidification soil with planting density, particularly at the Azaguié experimental site. Most of the roots are found in the 0-30 cm layer. The results of this study will play a key role in coming up with technical innovations aimed at improving soil fertility management and agronomic performance of Lippia multiflora-based cultivation system development.

Abstract— Pot experiment was conducted at Ndele, Rivers state, southern rainforest of Nigeria to determine the effect of cutting frequency on forage growth and yield in elephant grass, Pennisetum purpureum. The study was a single factor experiment of cutting intervals (5 days; 10 days; 15 days and 20 days) replicated 3 times, arranged in a randomized complete block design using replicates as blocks. Data collected were plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, forage fresh weight and dry weight. Results showed that cutting frequency significantly influenced plant height or growth rate, leaf area and number of leaves. Leaf area and number of leaves reduced with higher frequency or shorter interval of cutting. Grasses cut at 20 days interval recorded the greatest number of leaves and highest leaf area. Cutting frequency markedly affected forage fresh weight and dry matter production (dry weight) and there was noticeable forage yield reduction in grasses cut at 5 days interval (higher frequency) with progressive cuttings as against those cut at 20 days interval (low frequency). Grasses cut at 20 days interval recorded the highest growth and leaf production, the most forage fresh weight and dry matter yield. 20 days interval is hereby recommended for cutting Pennistum purpureum cutting or gracing in southern rainforest of Nigeria.

The study was carried out at the Teaching and Research Farm of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural
Technology, Minna, in the month of July 2014. The aim of the study was to estimate the bacteria and
fungi population of three selected vegetation types at three soil depths and correlate microbial counts
with the physicochemical properties of soils. The experiment was a 3 by 3 factorial experiment, arranged
in a completely randomized design. The treatments were vegetation types (fallow, gmelina, and teak)
and three soil depths (0–5 cm, 5–10 cm, and 10–15 cm). Data obtained were subjected to ANOVA while
means were separated using the Student–Newman–Keuls test Linear relationship. The standard pour
plate method was used to estimate bacteria and fungi colony-forming units (CFU) in 1 g soil. Physical
and chemical analyses were carried out by standard laboratory methods. The bacterial and fungal counts
were highest in the gmelina vegetation and least under teak. The 0–5 cm soil depth had the highest
microbial counts. Bacterial population correlated positively and significantly with the fungal population
and organic content while microbial population correlated negatively with soil pH. Gmelina vegetation
produced the highest microbial population followed by fallow and teak in that sequence. Fallow
recorded the narrowest C/N and C/P ratios, respectively, implying N mineralization and P solubilization
while the tree vegetations recorded wider ratios signifying N and P immobilization. It can, therefore, be
inferred from the results obtained that tree vegetations can be under cultivation with much sacrifice in
inorganic N and P fertilizers. Fallow land, on the other hand, will require lower inorganic N and P inputs
and, therefore, has prospects in reduction of environmental pollution and subsequent increase in crop
production.
Integrated Effect of Mulching Materials and Furrow Irrigation Methods on Yiel...Premier Publishers
A field experiment was conducted at Werer, Middle Awash Valley during the dry season of the 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 to investigate the effects of mulching materials and furrow irrigation methods on onion yield and water productivity under semi-arid conditions. Split plot design with three replications, in which the irrigation methods (Conventional, Fixed and Alternate Furrow) were assigned to the main plot and the three mulching materials (no mulch, wheat straw and white plastic mulch), were to the sub-plot. Results indicate that marketable onion bulb yield and water use efficiency were affected by the main effect of furrow irrigation methods and mulching materials (p< 0.05). But the interaction of irrigation methods and mulch had no significant effect on marketable onion bulb yield and water use efficiency. The conventional furrow irrigation (10081.52kg ha-1) and wheat straw mulch (12121.63 kg ha-1) resulted in the maximum marketable bulb yield. The highest water use efficiency (3.27 kg/m3) was obtained from alternate furrow irrigation method with straw mulch. This suggests that under limited irrigation water, alternate furrow irrigation along with wheat straw mulch minimize evaporation loss; maximize water productivity and sustain onion production at Amibara and similar agro-ecology and soil type.

This study focused on future spatial distributions of Andropogon gayanus, Loxodera ledermanii and Alysicarpus
ovalifolius regarding bioclimatic variables in the Sudanian zone of Benin, particularly in the W Biosphere
Reserve (WBR). These species were selected according to their importance for animals feed and the
intensification of exploitation pressure induced change in their natural spatial distribution. Twenty (20)
bioclimatic variables were tested and variables with high auto-correlation values were eliminated. Then, we
retained seven climatic variables for the model. A MaxEnt (Maximum Entropy) method was used to identify all
climatic factors which determined the spatial distribution of the three species. Spatial distribution showed for
Andropogon gayanus, a regression of high area distribution in detriment of low and moderate areas. The same
trend was observed for Loxodera ledermannii spatial distribution. For Alysicarpus ovalifolius, currently area
with moderate and low distribution were the most represented but map showed in 2050 that area with high
distribution increased. We can deduce that without bioclimatic variables, others factors such as: biotic
interactions, dispersion constraints, anthropic pressure, human activities and another historic factor determined
spatial distribution of species. Modeling techniques that require only presence data are therefore extremely
valuable.
Effect of nitrogen fertilizer rates and intra-row spacing on yield and yield ...Premier Publishers
A field experiment was conducted at Gode Polytechnic College demonstration farm in 2013 under irrigation to observe the effect of six N rates (0, 46, 69, 92, 115 and 138 kg ha-1) and four intra-row spacing levels (7.5, 10 12.5 and 15 cm) on yield and yield components of onion (Allium cepa L.). The experiment was laid out according to randomized complete block design in factorial arrangement with three replications. Results of the analysis revealed that the interaction effects of N rates and intra-row spacing showed highly significant (P<0.01) effect on harvest index, fresh biomass yield, dry biomass yield, total bulb yield and marketable bulb yield. Thus, according to the result of partial Budget analysis application of 138kg N ha-1 planted at 7.5cm plant to plant distance was found the best treatment than others in relation to yield and yield components of onion under Gode condition.
Application of Remote Sensing Techniques for Mapping Shifting CultivationIJERA Editor
Shifting cultivation is an ancient and primitive method of cultivation, also referred to as ‘slash and burn’ or ‘rotational bush fallow agricultural system’. The practice mainly involves removal of the forests by primitive slash and burn technique followed by mixed cropping for short period before abandoning the site. Tribals all over India are known to follow the practice of shifting cultivation with some regional variations. The present study has been undertaken to estimate the spatial distribution of podu cultivation in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh by using remote sensing techniques. Results of the present study indicate that an estimated area of 10,491.857 acres of the forest area is under shifting cultivation in Srikakulam district. Shifting cultivation has caused a great deal of environmental degradation. Remote sensing techniques with repetitive coverage and synoptic view provide database for assessing environment degrading practices. Mapping of shifting areas is important not only from ecological point of view but also for management purposes.

The study was carried out at the Teaching and Research Farm of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural
Technology, Minna, in the month of July 2014. The aim of the study was to estimate the bacteria and
fungi population of three selected vegetation types at three soil depths and correlate microbial counts
with the physicochemical properties of soils. The experiment was a 3 by 3 factorial experiment, arranged
in a completely randomized design. The treatments were vegetation types (fallow, gmelina, and teak)
and three soil depths (0–5 cm, 5–10 cm, and 10–15 cm). Data obtained were subjected to ANOVA while
means were separated using the Student–Newman–Keuls test Linear relationship. The standard pour
plate method was used to estimate bacteria and fungi colony-forming units (CFU) in 1 g soil. Physical
and chemical analyses were carried out by standard laboratory methods. The bacterial and fungal counts
were highest in the gmelina vegetation and least under teak. The 0–5 cm soil depth had the highest
microbial counts. Bacterial population correlated positively and significantly with the fungal population
and organic content while microbial population correlated negatively with soil pH. Gmelina vegetation
produced the highest microbial population followed by fallow and teak in that sequence. Fallow
recorded the narrowest C/N and C/P ratios, respectively, implying N mineralization and P solubilization
while the tree vegetations recorded wider ratios signifying N and P immobilization. It can, therefore, be
inferred from the results obtained that tree vegetations can be under cultivation with much sacrifice in
inorganic N and P fertilizers. Fallow land, on the other hand, will require lower inorganic N and P inputs
and, therefore, has prospects in reduction of environmental pollution and subsequent increase in crop
production.
Integrated Effect of Mulching Materials and Furrow Irrigation Methods on Yiel...Premier Publishers
A field experiment was conducted at Werer, Middle Awash Valley during the dry season of the 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 to investigate the effects of mulching materials and furrow irrigation methods on onion yield and water productivity under semi-arid conditions. Split plot design with three replications, in which the irrigation methods (Conventional, Fixed and Alternate Furrow) were assigned to the main plot and the three mulching materials (no mulch, wheat straw and white plastic mulch), were to the sub-plot. Results indicate that marketable onion bulb yield and water use efficiency were affected by the main effect of furrow irrigation methods and mulching materials (p< 0.05). But the interaction of irrigation methods and mulch had no significant effect on marketable onion bulb yield and water use efficiency. The conventional furrow irrigation (10081.52kg ha-1) and wheat straw mulch (12121.63 kg ha-1) resulted in the maximum marketable bulb yield. The highest water use efficiency (3.27 kg/m3) was obtained from alternate furrow irrigation method with straw mulch. This suggests that under limited irrigation water, alternate furrow irrigation along with wheat straw mulch minimize evaporation loss; maximize water productivity and sustain onion production at Amibara and similar agro-ecology and soil type.

This study focused on future spatial distributions of Andropogon gayanus, Loxodera ledermanii and Alysicarpus
ovalifolius regarding bioclimatic variables in the Sudanian zone of Benin, particularly in the W Biosphere
Reserve (WBR). These species were selected according to their importance for animals feed and the
intensification of exploitation pressure induced change in their natural spatial distribution. Twenty (20)
bioclimatic variables were tested and variables with high auto-correlation values were eliminated. Then, we
retained seven climatic variables for the model. A MaxEnt (Maximum Entropy) method was used to identify all
climatic factors which determined the spatial distribution of the three species. Spatial distribution showed for
Andropogon gayanus, a regression of high area distribution in detriment of low and moderate areas. The same
trend was observed for Loxodera ledermannii spatial distribution. For Alysicarpus ovalifolius, currently area
with moderate and low distribution were the most represented but map showed in 2050 that area with high
distribution increased. We can deduce that without bioclimatic variables, others factors such as: biotic
interactions, dispersion constraints, anthropic pressure, human activities and another historic factor determined
spatial distribution of species. Modeling techniques that require only presence data are therefore extremely
valuable.

A field experiment was conducted at Gode Polytechnic College demonstration farm in 2013 under irrigation to observe the effect of six N rates (0, 46, 69, 92, 115 and 138 kg ha-1) and four intra-row spacing levels (7.5, 10 12.5 and 15 cm) on yield and yield components of onion (Allium cepa L.). The experiment was laid out according to randomized complete block design in factorial arrangement with three replications. Results of the analysis revealed that the interaction effects of N rates and intra-row spacing showed highly significant (P<0.01) effect on harvest index, fresh biomass yield, dry biomass yield, total bulb yield and marketable bulb yield. Thus, according to the result of partial Budget analysis application of 138kg N ha-1 planted at 7.5cm plant to plant distance was found the best treatment than others in relation to yield and yield components of onion under Gode condition.

Shifting cultivation is an ancient and primitive method of cultivation, also referred to as ‘slash and burn’ or ‘rotational bush fallow agricultural system’. The practice mainly involves removal of the forests by primitive slash and burn technique followed by mixed cropping for short period before abandoning the site. Tribals all over India are known to follow the practice of shifting cultivation with some regional variations. The present study has been undertaken to estimate the spatial distribution of podu cultivation in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh by using remote sensing techniques. Results of the present study indicate that an estimated area of 10,491.857 acres of the forest area is under shifting cultivation in Srikakulam district. Shifting cultivation has caused a great deal of environmental degradation. Remote sensing techniques with repetitive coverage and synoptic view provide database for assessing environment degrading practices. Mapping of shifting areas is important not only from ecological point of view but also for management purposes.

Aquatic macrophytes hold several niches within the ecosystem, including inter alia water purification, carbon sequestration and serve as microhabitats for aquatic insects. These dynamic roles make macrophytes good indicators of current environmental conditions. Hence assessing their abundance in line with wetland ecosystem dynamics and function is essential. Frequency of occurrence and density values were estimated, using twenty (20) 2 m x 2 m quadrats for each macrophyte encountered. The results of the study revealed twenty-one (21) macrophytes belonging to 16 families. These ponds varied markedly in terms of species composition and in numerical strength such that Polygonum lanigerum (1143+175st/ha), Setaria verticillata (337.5+ 32.8st/ha), Azolla pinnata (337.7+ 16.4 st/ha) recorded high density values while Lagenaria breviflora (18.7±2.19), Sida acuta (18.75±5.30), Ludwigia erecta (18.7±0.15) and Milletia aboensis (18.7±0.03) were the least abundant species. Pond A and D with 11 taxa each had the higher Shannon-Wiener (2.192, 2.214) and Simpson (0.8699, 0.8787) diversity indices respectively when compared to the other ponds. On the contrary, pond C with four taxa had the least Shannon-Wiener and Simpson diversity indices (1.253, 0.6782) respectively. Equitability and evenness ranged between 0.914 - 0. 952 and 0.814 - 0.900 respectively. Bray and Curtis cluster analysis showed that pond B was the most dissimilar compared to other ponds in terms of the taxa composition.
Mangroves are the important salt tolerant vegetation having more ecological and economical significances. In comparison to that of eastern coastal part, the western coastal region of Peninsular India comprises less area of mangroves. Therefore, establishing new mangroves in suitable habitats in this region is more essential to maintain the ecological processes in coastal landscape. To select the suitable mangrove species for newer areas of Kerala coast, a preliminary study on ecology was carried out in two natural mangrove vegetation at Ayiramthengu and Mandrothruthu, Kollam district. The study revealed that out of 34 (Ayiramthengu) and 24 (Mandrothruthu) species present, a sizable number of eight and six species respectively were true mangroves and adapted more prominently in their respective site indicated by higher Importance Value Index (IVI) and Relative Value of Importance (RVI) obtained by them. Therefore, these species are suggested for new formations of mangrove vegetation in the coastal regions of Kerala.
Effect of Different Sources of Nutrient on Growth and Yield of Okra (Abelmosc...Agriculture Journal IJOEAR
The experiment was carried out at Nepal Polytechnic Institute field, Bharatpur, Chitwan, Nepal to study the effect of different nutrient sources on growth and yield of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L Monech). Five different treatments; poultry manure, FYM, goat manure, chemical (as per N equivalent) and no fertilizer (control) were replicated four times. The experiment was arranged in Randomize Complete Block Design (RCBD). The okra variety ArkaAnamika was used for experiment. The data were collected on the growth and yield parameters including plant height (cm), canopy (cm), numbers of leaves per plant, numbers of branches per plant, fruit length, diameter and yield. Results indicated that different nutrient sources had significant (P<0.05) affected on plant height, canopy, leaf number, branches and also in yield parameters. Based on the findings of the experiments, it can be concluded that application of poultry manure significantly increased the growth and yield performances on Abelmoschus esculentus L. Monech (okra) compared to other types of fertilizers. As the study reflected the use of no fertilizer results in the lowest vegetative growth and yield performances which indicates to use some nutrient sources for better growth and production of okra.
Abstract— Pinus halepensis Mill., is a most common tree in the Mediterranean basin. In Tunisia, specifically Kroumirie, it is an excellence species. However, for several years, we assist a continual deterioration of this ecosystem type. Several factors are the origin for this degradation: insects and fungi attack, fire, aging populations, low regeneration and hardening climate. This degradation is further accentuated by installing careers around the pine forest. Our objective in this study was to identify the career dust influence on growth and productivity of Aleppo pine; through dendrochronological approach (tree rings study) and dendrometric approach (measurement of diameter, height and survival rate). Study is accomplished on two populations: a reference site ‘Charchara’ located away from mining and Oued el maaden site near a gravel extraction career. In addition, physical and chemical parameters are analysed on soil and water samples collected in the two sites. Results showed significant differences of parameters studied between stations both in dendrometric and dendrochronological parameters over time. Second, in physical and chemical parameters, a very high content on metals traces was found on soil and water in Oued el maaden site.
Effects of a Composite Endomycorrhizal Inoculum on Olive Cuttings under the G...IJEAB
This study was carried out in a nursery to evaluate the impact of mycorrhizal fungi on the cutting’s root growth, and root colonization of a Moroccan olive variety ‘Picholine Marocaine’ under greenhouse conditions during 2 years of cultivation. The results revealed that the inoculation with a composite inoculum of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) stimulated an early root formation and high development of vegetative shoots in inoculated cuttings respectively, 35 days (50 days in the control plots) and 40 days (60 days in the control plots) after their culture. The progressive establishment of mycorrhizal symbiosis in the roots of the inoculated plants showed that the root and vegetative masses were respectively 24 g and 19.5 g two years after inoculation. The average height and the leave’s number of the inoculated plants relative to the control were respectively s 42/ 12 cm and 145/12. The newly formed roots were mycorrhizal and present different structures characteristic of AMF: arbuscules, vesicles, hyphae and spores, whose frequency and intensity reached 90% and 75% two years after cuttings cultivation. The arbuscular and vesicular contents and the number of spores were 67%, 96% and 212 spores/ 100 g of soil respectively. The fourteen species of mycorrhizal fungi isolated from the rhizosphere belong to 4 genera (Glomus, Acaulospora, Gigaspora, and Scutellospora) and three families (Glomaceae, Acaulosporaceae and Gigasporacea).The Glomus genus was the most dominant (65%) followed by the Gigaspora genus (22%). Glomus intraradices, Gigaspora sp.2, Glomus versiformes are the most abundant species, their frequency of occurrence are respectively 30%, 21% and 16%.

In Jerid region pedoclimatic conditions and agricultural practices are of major importance in shaping the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the rhizophere of date palm tree. Glomus mosseae (dominant species) isolated from soil was multiplied and used as inoculum for date palm seedling. For this study, a pot experiment was conducted under greenhouse condition to assess the effect of inoculation with arbuscular mycorhizal fungus (Glomus mosseae) and mycorrhizal soil (substrate containing the propagules) compared to control seedlings. The result of analysis carried out in this work revealed that the addition of mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus mosseae) and mycorrhizal soil allowed us to conclude that the increase in phosphorus and nitrogen availability in soil solutions leads to a decrease in mycorhization rate and vice versa. Furthermore there is a good correlation between these two parameters. The levels of exchangeable calcium and magnesium tend to increase slightly over time estimated that their absorption mechanism is the same as for phosphorus. The absorption of these elements often difficult to assimilate by the plant is improved by the mycorrhizal association. That is to say, the increase in their removal is mainly due to better exploration of the soil by extra-rooted hyphae. In addition, endomycorrhizae are much less influenced by certain interactions between soil elements. Greenhouse experiments clearly show that artificial inoculation with mycorrhizal soil and spores (Glomus mosseae) has led to an improvement in the fertility of soils used as a substrate for culture, with a superiority of infection caused by mycorrhizal soil.

Abstract— Homegardens in Kerala mimic forest ecosystems on account of the tree components included and are agroforestry systems that integrate different agricultural crops and enterprises as per the needs and interests of the farm family. Analysis of the structural diversity and nutrient recycling potentials of three agroforestry homegardens in southern Kerala revealed multi-tier cropping patterns with cropping intensities ranging from 177.18 to 187.04%. Two of the homegardens included livestock components adding to the nutritional security of the family. Diversity indices were in the order 0.92, 1.53 and 0.86. The quantum of litter fall varied with the tree canopies and species, amounting to 473.6, 425.37 and 345.11 kg adding 7.02, 7.517 and 5.165 kg NPK annually in the three homegardens. Maximum nutrient additions were recorded for nitrogen and potassium and least for phosphorus.
The Role of Soil Organisms and Functions in different Coconut based Multiple ...Agriculture Journal IJOEAR
Abstract—Sampling was done in wet and intermediate zones represented by the Walpita and Makandura research centers, respectively. Eleven land use systems were considered for the study; coconut mono culture (CM), bare land (BL) and coconut multiple cropping. Under coconut multiple cropping, nine different intercrops were selected separately for each zones. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates (n = 3). The experiment was conducted under mature baring coconut (>20 years) plantation. Soil Macrofauna was sampled using one transect with three replicates at each land use type using quadrate size (30×30cm) from 0-30 cm depth and visible organisms were handpicked and preserved in 75% alcohol. Dilute plate technique and Spread plate technique was used to determine the soil micro organisms’ density. Those techniques were used to cultivate the fungi and bacteria under 〖10〗^(-2) and 〖10〗^(-5) dilution level respectively.
Research identified 12 classes (Crusteacea, Oligochaeta, Hirudinea, Gastropoda, Acarina, Araneida, Scopionida, Chilapoda, Diplopoda, Amphibia, Reptelia) and 14 orders (Hemiptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, Thysanura, Hymenoptera, Lepidotera, Orthoptera, Blattaria, Mantodea, Phasmida, Dermaptera, Isoptera, Siphonaptera, Thysanoptera) of soil organisms. Class insecta shows the high diversity with 14 orders. Colony forming unit (CFU) value of bacteria was higher than that of the fungi value. Findings of intermediate and wet zones’ studies suggested that coconut multiple cropping systems may have high diversity, abundance and functional role of soil organisms. Both zones studies suggested that coconut multiple cropping systems may increase soil moisture factor, respiration rate, biomass carbon content, organic carbon percentage, total nitrogen content, organic matter content and C:N ratio in 0-30cm depth other than the coconut monoculture systems. Overall data of two different zones indicated a significant positive correlation of soil organism diversity, abundance and their functional role with cropping systems. Those data can be used as a reliable basic bio indicator for payments for ecosystem services (PES). It supports to valorize the economic value of the ecological services returned by soil organisms.

The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.

Mining and mineral processing adversely affects the ecology of the
area by disturbing the land mass, the water systems and floral-faunal
populations and in turn the quality of human life. Garhwal Himalayas
of Uttarakhand covering an area of 30, 000 km2 abound in forest,
meadows, marshes and swamps with their characteristic plant
composition. Mussoorie hills (Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand,
India) till early eighties faced a serious threat due to heavy limestone
quarrying with 105 working mines in this region. After the cessation
of mining activity restoration of these sites was undertaken by
different agencies. The ecological restoration interventions were
initiated in these areas during 1988-1989. Ecology of this region was
adversely affected by large scale limestone quarrying.

5. DESCRIPTION OF STUDY AREA

6. Topography
Topography is hilly with steep to highly steep slopes from
bottom valley lands to the ridges at the top. Hap hazardous tree
cuttings have also changed the topography of the area with
predominance of deep gullies/drains and furrows. As the land is
devoid of woody vegetation, landslides and landslips are frequent
Climate
The region experiences an average annual rainfall of 2,225 mm.
The average temperature peaks during June to about 29o c and dips
lowest in December January to an average of about 7oc. The area
experiences snowfall during winter and minimum temperature
frequently records below 0oc.

7. MATERIALS AND METHOD
Phyto - sociological studies
• To assess the floristic composition of the re-vegetated site, the phyto
- sociological studies were carried out using quadrate method
(Mishra , 1968) during the month of July 2015. Three sizes of
quadrates 1x1m, 5x5m, and 10x 10 m were laid randomly for
recording herbs and garasses , shrubs and tree vegetation
respectively. Vegetation data were analyzed for frequency. Density,
abundance, Importance value index (I.V.I) of plant species by applying
the standard formulae (Curtis and Mc Intosh 1950; Curtis and Cottam
, 1956 and Phillips, 1959).
• The diversity index was calculated according to Shannon-Wiener
diversity index (1963).The plant basal diameter was measured with
the help of measuring tape and digital caliper . The following
parameters were determined as under:- 6
8. • Frequency
Frequency expresses the distribution or dispersion of various species
in a community.
• Density
The term density represents the numerical strength or species in the
community.
• Abundance
Abundance is described as the number of individuals per quadrate of
occurrence .
• Importance value Index
The index has been developed to express the ecological success of
any species on a given site. It uses three characteristics viz. relative
frequency. Relative density and relative dominance (Phillips, 1959).

9. • Basal Area
Basal area refers to the ground actually penetrated by the
stems. It is one of the chief characters determining
dominance and the nature of the community. The basal area
in case of herbaceous and shrub vegetation was measured on
the ground level of plant. For tree species diameter was
recorded at chest height (1.37m)
• Procedure
An average 10-20 stems of each species were selected and
measured their diameters at chest height (dhh). The average
diameter calculated for each species was used to calculate the
basal area (sq.cm) .

10. RESULT AND DISCUSSION
In the Study area, all the three strata, viz. herb, shrub and tree were
present (Tables 1 to 3). In the study site tree layer was dominated by
Cuppressus torulosa (IVI 157) followed by Debregeasia velutina (IVI,
83.3) and Tooa cilitata (IVI58.7). In shrub layer, Lepidagathis
cuspidate (IVI 94.6), Rubus cotinus (IVI46.7) and Colebrookia
oppositifolia (IVI 34.2), were the dominant taxa. Herb layer was
dominated by Imperata cylindrical (IVI 79.8), Bidens biternata (IVI
50.9).
