An analysis of a consumer database calls into question the idea, common among academic
observers, that market segmentation can work as a grand strategy for either cruise lines or
for hotel brands. In pursuing a market segmentation strategy, a brand would focus its efforts
on a discrete group of consumers to the exclusion of other groups. In so doing, that brand
would attempt to forestall that set of customers from doing business with competitors. Using data
drawn from a sample of over 40,000 respondents in the United States, this study finds no such exclusivity
for large market segments. One reason for this is that hotel and cruise markets are not sufficiently
segmented for such a strategy to succeed.

- 4. Novel Quiz / Reading Response (20 minutes total) Multiple Choice Quiz /5 marks Close your books Circle the best answer When you are done, hand in your quiz and take the “Reading Response” handout for your novel

Reading Response Purpose to express your personal reactions and opinions about what you are reading to make connections with previous reading or your own experiences to show an understanding of what you are reading to show that you can write clearly about literature Avoid re-telling the story – only re-tell the parts of the story that are necessary to support your own ideas
- 6. Reading Response /5 What is your overall reaction to your novel so far? Explain your thoughts and feelings, referring to the story details as necessary. You may use your novel for this task. NOTE: this is an in-class assignment. If you missed this class you cannot write on this topic.
