Independent Reading Assignment
Choose a non-fiction text of at least 150 pages. Follow the timeline for assignments and
due dates. There are four check-ins, which will help you develop your thinking about the topic.
Finally, choose a project that illustrates your topic in a creative way.
Timeline
4/15- Check in #1 (25% of book has been read) 4/22- Check in #2 (50% of book has been read)
4/29- Check in #3 (75% of book has been read) 5/06- Check in #4 (100% of book has been read)
5/11- Projects due; Presentations 5/12- Presentations
Book Requirements - Select a non-fiction book to read independently over the next few
weeks. The book must have at least 150 pages, but it can be about a topic of your choosing.
Choose a topic that interests you, but not one in which you are an expert.
Check-ins - Check-ins are due every Wednesday at the beginning of class.
Check in #1 (10 points)
Journal Response— ½ page typed
- What did you know about the topic before getting started on the book? (2 points)
- Why did you choose this book? (4 points)
- What have you learned so far? What do you want to learn? (4 points)
Check in #2 (20 points)
Journal Response – ½-1 page typed
- What techniques does the author use to present the information? (5 points)
- Where can you learn more about this topic? What outside sources have you
visited? (5 points)
- What is the most important thing you have learned so far? Why? (5 points)
- How can you use this information in your life? (5 points)
Check in #3 (30 points)
Source-Based Argument – 1-1.5 pages typed
- Using the book as the primary source, write an essay in which you argue whether
or not your topic should be taught in school. Use supporting facts and evidence
from the text to support your argument. Do not simply summarize the text.
Check in #4 (40 points)
Paragraph Response – 2 pages typed
- Using information from the text, write a well-developed essay in which you
identify a central idea in the text and analyze how the author’s use of one writing
strategy (literary element, literary technique, or rhetorical device) develops this
central idea. Use strong and thorough evidence from the text to support your
analysis. Do not simply summarize the text.

ProjectOptions – Choose one option below to illustrate your topic in a creative way. Your
project will be graded on the following criteria:
- The project relates to the main topic of the non-fiction text………………...….10 points
- The project is complete and accurate……………………………….…........…..20 points
- The project shows excellent understanding of the topic……………...……...….20 points
- The project teaches the audience about the topic…………………...………...…20 points
- The project is organized and shows time and effort……..………….……...…...10 points
- The project is handed in on the due date…………………………….….........….10 points
- A clear voice, eye contact and good posture are used throughout presentation…10 points
Children’s Book
Write and design a children’s book that introduces your topic to children. Include simple
sentences and images to depict the main points of your topic. Any images you use that
you do not create yourself must be cited on a works cited page at the end of the book.
You will be reading your children’s book aloud during your presentation.
Photo Story
Take 7+ photographs or draw 5+ depictions of the main events/points of your book in
order to create a story through images. In your presentation, you will show each of the
images and explain how each of the images portrays the main points of your book.
Timeline
This is a great choice for books about historical events. Your timeline may be digital or in
print (i.e. on a poster board). In your timeline, you must include dates of at least 10
significant events, as well as descriptions of each of those events. Any images or quotes
you choose to include must be cited on a works cited page attached to the timeline.
Public Service Announcement
Write and film a public service announcement that relates to your topic. Include
significant facts, figures, and diagrams to persuade your viewers of the importance of
your topic. Any images that you do not create or quotes from the text must be cited on a
works cited slide at the end of the PSA.
Song or Chant
Write a song or chant about your topic. It can be a mnemonic device to help remember
important details about your topic or it can be a tribute to your topic. You must submit
the lyrics on the due date for full credit.
Other
If you have another idea, besides those listed above, propose the idea to Miss Darby. All
other ideas must be approved by Miss Darby to receive full credit.
