The Tell-Tale Heart

Before Reading

• What does the title suggest to you?
• What does “Tell-Tale” mean?
   – revealing, giving a signal or clue
• We say “there was a tell-tale sign”
• How might a heart be revealing?
• Author: Edgar Allan Poe
   – American,
   – lived in the 1800s,
   – known for writing “dark” stories and poems

  • 2. Housekeeping • Interim Marks – I will give you your mark at the end of class.
  • 3. Grammar Quiz – 15 minutes • Write your name on the top right corner. • Read the directions carefully. • Edit the sentences; do not rewrite them. • There is only one error per question.
  • 4. Last Monday • Process paragraph – describes the process, method, or steps a reader would need to follow to make or do something. • Assignment: • follow the steps on p. 198-201 to write a process paragraph • I said, “Do as much as you can; we will have more time on Monday.” • Most students did not follow – my verbal instructions, or – the written instructions (Steps a. through e.)
  • 5. Last Week’s In-class Assignment • Do Writing Assignment #1 on p. 198-201. • Follow the step-by-step instructions, including the prewriting steps a. to e. • Hand in all your work. Marks: • Prewriting /5 • Paragraph /20

When you are done, start working on the following writing homework: – Read “The Writing Process” (English Skills, p. 18-32). – Choose from Activities 1, 4, or 5. (Do one activity) – Complete Activities 6, 7, and 8. (Do all activities)

The Tell-Tale Heart Before Reading • Short story – fiction • What does the title suggest to you? • What does “Tell-Tale” mean? – revealing, giving a signal or clue • We say “there was a tell-tale sign” • How might a heart be revealing? • Author: Edgar Allan Poe – American, – lived in the 1800s, – known for writing “dark” stories and poems

  • 10. Homework For next class! • Re-read the story “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Make brief notes on the handout “Reviewing Story Elements.” We will discuss selected elements in class.
