Trust requires taking risks and having positive expectations about others' intentions, even when vulnerable. How much trust exists affects how much risk parties are willing to take. When conflicts arise, attributing motives and assigning blame impacts trust, as people tend to attribute negative events externally rather than internally to minimize their own fault. Building trust involves correctly interpreting others' behaviors and accounting for self-serving biases in attribution.
