Abstract This paper may be helpful in making the living of handicapped people easy which will be helpful for the handicapped people to drive their wheelchair through figure operation. It is an opportunity to be a handicapped as independent. System comprises of integration of finger operation using digital image processing and embedded technology.According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between the 7 and 10% of the population worldwide suffer from some physical disability. In Latin-America the physically disabled are estimated in 55 million people, which represent the 9% of its total population. This census indicates that the most common disability is motor, followed by blindness, deafness, intellectual and language. All alone, the motor-disabled achieve 20 million in Latin-America and there is an anticipated continued growth due to increasing aging, longevity and accident related injuries. Wheelchairs make up a significant portion of the mobility assistive devices in use for those. Since the 1930s, the design concept of a wheelchair has been the same: a main frame, two large rear wheels and two small front wheels called casters. This basic design has been used to develop many of today’ wheelchairs by applying slight design modifications to produce lighter, more durable and more comfortable wheelchairs for people who use them on a daily basis. Finally it means that is affordable and beneficial by the people. Keywords: Digital Image Processing, Embedded Technology, Finger operated Wheelchair

Design and Development of Secure Navigation System for Visually Impaired Peopleijcsit
The proposed work presents a navigation system, which detects the obstacles and also guide to visually impaired people about appropriate path. The system we propose detects the obstacle via an infrared based detecting system and sends back vibro-tactile or sound (buzzer) feedback to inform the user about its position. The most common method of obstacle detection, used by blind people is the walking stick. The limitation of walking stick is that, it does not provide protection near to head area. A sensor module is fixed on a light weight cap allowing the user to obtain the information about obstacles (near to head area) and also about correct path on which the user should move. When the user uses this system with cane, he is fully protected about obstacles and can navigate freely into the environment.

Design and implementation of an sms based robotic system for hole- detection ...eSAT Journals
Abstract This paper presents the design and implementation of SMS-based robotic system for hole-detection in surface pipes using GPS/GPRS/GSM technology. In industries today, surface pipelines are used to transport fluids; some of these pipelines have joints which are welded together. In a situation whereby the welding is not perfectly done, leakage of fluids may occur, leading to product loss and downtime. Therefore to checkmate this issue of pipeline leakage, an SMS-based robotic system is designed to inspect the pipelines for holes and if light is sensed in the pipelines through the sensing devices on the robot, a Short Message Service (SMS) indicating the location where the light was sensed is sent to the operator’s phone with help of the SIM 900 GPS/GPRS/GSM MODEM installed on the robot hardware system. The robot system is designed with an Arduino Uno Micro-Controller and some sensing devices installed on it. The system is programmed using embedded C language. After the implementation, the robot system was tested which could detect holes in surface pipelines and sent short message to the personnel’s mobile phone. Navigation in the physical environment is a challenge for those people who have very limited sense of sight or no vision at all. Assistive technologies for blind mobilization is not new and always have a room for improvement. Moreover, these assistive devices are limited in terms of its sensing and feedback abilities. This paper presents a microcontroller-based guiding stick capable of detecting several conditions of the environment such as obstacles in front, left and right positions of the user and detects ascending and descending staircases. The feedback is delivered by an audio output which dictates the direction to go or what condition the sensor detects in front of the user. Technical evaluation proves that the device was functional in terms of its accuracy, responsiveness and correctness. On the other hand, in the actual evaluation of the device with the visually impaired individuals, the device did not perform efficiently. It was also found that the device has the potential to be used effectively by the visually impaired who acquired their blindness in later stage of their life provided that they will have a proper training in using the device while navigating in the physical environment.

Design and development of intelligent electronics travelling aid for visually...eSAT Journals
Abstract The dynamic nature of the environment poses a big challenge to the visually impaired in navigation. This compels most of the visually impaired persons in the developing countries, who generally do not get any technology support, to depend on the visual sense of others, thus, undermining their independence. The intelligent electronic travelling aid for the visually impaired (IETA-VI) designed and developed by the authors and reported here, intends to provide solution to the navigational challenges of the visually impaired individuals. The system utilizes the ultrasonic detection technology for detecting any obstacle in his/her path, and then converts the distance to the obstacle into voice using voice synthesis technology so as to inform the visually impaired user. The device uses GPS and GSM technologies to determine the location of the user and to send this location to his/her care givers on mobile phone, respectively. The device also recognizes the voice signals of the visually impaired when in distress, by making use of voice recognition technology and send SMS to his care givers giving his location and asking them to help him. In a moment of emergency, when the visually impaired requires the attention of his/her care givers, the device provides three alternatives: The first alternative it provides is an emergency key, which when pressed will automatically send the location of the visually impaired to the care givers. The second alternative is that the visually impaired shouts (gives a voice command), the device responds by sending the location of the visually impaired to the care givers. The third alternatives take care of the situation when the user is unconscious or cannot even speak. This is provided by the display device, which displays the names and contact details of his/her care givers, so that someone can offer a helping hand. KEYWORDS: Ultrasonic detection, Voice recognition, Voice synthesis, GPS, GSM.

around without a helping hand [1]. Interfacing of microcontrol-
ler with sensors provides the ability to sense the environment
and control the actuators required for recognizing the obstacles
if any. This device can help the blind person to move in a room
without approaching closely to the unknown objects and also
work as a guiding tool to move from one place to another with-
out much effort.
2. WORK AND METHODS
Ultrasonic sensor provides an easy method of distance mea-
surement in contrast with the other sensors with comparison as
shown in table.1.The chosen ultrasonic ping sensor is perfect
for any number of applications that require performing mea-
surements between moving or stationary objects. Ultrasonic
measurements work in any lighting condition, making this a
good choice to supplement infrared object detectors with very
few limitations [3]. It is capable of spotting the obstacle within
1 meter range to detect obstacles and give a quick immediate
output. Designing two separate units namely 1) Navigation Box
Unit and 2) Motor Driving Unit can be a challenging task with
innovative design considerations.
2.1 Navigation Box Unit
A Smart Navigation Box is constructed which is small, compact
and tough in handling usage. The unit has microcontroller,
buzzers, battery enclosed within a plastic packaging which is
less in weight and easy to assemble the units shown in fig.3.
The sensor can transmit the analog signals to the interfaced
microcontroller, which has an inbuilt analog to digital conver-
ter. The microcontroller which comes in various sizes and spe-
cifications is opted to satisfy the requirements like cost, speed,
and easiness to program, inbuilt ADC, small size, etc. An 8 bit
microcontroller with 4K ROM and 1K RAM is well enough to
make this compact device which can work on a DC battery. The
flow chart for programming the microcontroller is as shown in
fig.2.The sensor identifies the barriers in the walking path and
the microcontroller provides an audible beep with the help of a
piezoelectric buzzer.
Interfacing to a microcontroller is a snap. A single I/O (Input-
Output) pin is used to trigger an ultrasonic burst (well above
human hearing) and then "listen" for the echo return pulse. The
sensor measures the time required for the echo return, and re-
turns this value to the microcontroller as a variable-width pulse
via the same I/O pin. It provides precise, non-contact distance
measurements within a 2 cm to 1 m range.
The sensor interfaced microcontroller assembly is Navigation
Box Unit also called as Dual-purpose box. The block diagram
of Dual-purpose box is as shown in fig.1 .The construction is
less in weight, effortless and untroubled, portable structure pro-
viding an ease to fetch along with the needy ones.

2.2 Motor Driving Unit
The microcontroller also with its digital output can drive the
actuators with its mA currents. It provides enough current to
drive a DC motor without the need of a motor driver IC. A sep-
arate motor driving unit is designed with a single DC motor and
two balancing wheels as shown in the fig.5 .When the Dual-
purpose Box is docked to this unit; the controller senses the
obstacles from the environment with the ultrasonic sensor and
provides an output. This output is essentially an audio beep
generated by a piezoelectric buzzer. An another output is gener-
ated when the dual purpose box is mounted on the motor driv-
ing unit attached to a wooden guiding stick which is commonly
used by the impaired people. It drives the motor in the forward
direction when there are no obstacles present in the walking
path of the person holding the guiding stick as shown in the
fig.7. Since holding a weight less stick is nothing new to the
visually impaired people using this gadget attached stick helps
them great fully. Any obstruction detected makes the motor stop
immediately with a simultaneous buzzer sound, and then the
individual handling the gadget will well understand to change
his path direction.

3 RESULTS
Dual-purpose blind navigation box was tested for obstacle de-
tections without attaching to a motor driving unit as shown in
fig.6. The sensor is agile for obstacle detection up to 1m range
and an angle up to 30 degrees from it centre as represented in
fig.4.In the presence of obstruction, the device gave excellent
audio output in the form of a beep ,which acted as a quick indi-
cator for the blind person. The box simply docked to the motor
driving unit helped the blind to navigate in the forward direc-
tions. The motor stopped when an obstruction is sensed with a
quick continuous buzzer sound. Then the device was turned
manually by the user in other directions to walk in a clear envi-
ronment. It requires some practice and knowledge to operate
this system for regular use. The complete system operates on
rechargeable 9V that can last for 11hours without motor driving
unit and 4 hours with the motor driving unit.

4. CONCLUSIONS
We have developed a Dual-purpose portable box for blind navi-
gation to detect the obstacles in the range of 1meter.This range
of detection can be extended considering the demand of the
users. The device is excellent in indoor applications and also
worked well for outdoor navigation in sunny and cold climate
conditions. More features can be appended on this box to make
it a multi-purpose box to control the appliances at home or of-
fice.
