Employee Paid Time
Effectively managing and retaining today s human capital is a continual process that is affected by
every policy, procedure and decision related to people (Brundage Koziel, 2010). There are benefits of
paid time off other than reducing the amount of unscheduled time off. Not all employers provide
employees with paid time off, but for those that do it would be in the best interest of the organization
to have a written policy to prevent confusion. First, employees are able to manage their work/life
balance. If employees have 12 PTO days to use throughout the year, they will plan to use their PTO
according to upcoming events in their lives. Employees will be able to schedule time off to take care
of personal issues and leave some PTO available

Spirometer Research Papers
Abstract This paper presents a new approach towards the development of a spirometer on chip device
for point of care (PoC) diagnostics. The proposed device consists of a cantilever based airflow sensor
fabricated through a Multi User MEMS process (MUMPS). The deflection of each cantilever beam is
measured using capacitive electrodes integrated on a single semiconductor chip. These electrodes are
connected to an off chip custom made readout interface circuit for the measurement of minute
capacitive changes and for the acquisition of data into a computer. Herein, we discuss and demonstrate
the characterization results of such a system using a low complexity air based technique. Additionally,
we demonstrate the applicability of these devices ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fundamentally, this ushers the opportunity to realize a single chip capable of replacing an entire
diagnostic system present in contemporary clinical laboratories or hospitals. Among various clinical
applications, the focus of this paper is placed on the development of a novel spirometer for lung
disease sensing purposes. Lung diseases such as Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary (COP)
disease affect the airways and cause inabilities to exhale normally. A spirometer is the most reliable
tool for lung disease and with 100 million sufferers approximated worldwide [9] has the potential to
improve care for significant numbers. Commercially available spirometers for measuring complicated
lung functions are bulky, expensive and not suitable for PoC lung disease monitoring. Also the
available spirometers in the market require disposable parts. Indeed the development of a mobile free
breathing easy to use spirometer for frequent (e.g. daily) measurement of lung status is the key
challenge to diagnosis and control of the disease in its early stages. To date many papers have reported
the design and implementation of micro sensors for airflow or air velocity measurement using
micromachining techniques [10 11]. Among these, Chen et al. reported the design and implementation
of an array of hot wires

Organizational and Change Management Models
Models of Organizational Change Introduction The world is experiencing unprecedented changes in
the structure and operation of organizations. This has increased the challenges that confront
organizations. New competition from unexpected places is a huge challenge. So are the cultural issues
that come with a diverse, opinionated, and often far flung workforce. The need for fast acting,
effective, sustained organizational change will continue to increase. In fact, it will increase even more
rapidly than it is now. The flattening of the world through globalization has sent market forces in new
directions. Organizations must react to this increasingly chaotic market swiftly and effectively. The
McKinsey 7 S Model and Lewin s three step model are two of the most influential models of
organizational change in the business world. The McKinsey 7 S model emphasizes the role of
structural factors in organizational change, while Lewin s three step model is rooted in behavioral
factors. Thesis: The McKinsey 7 S model is grounded in questionable research methods and an
excessive focus on structural factors. Lewin s three step model is more incisive and relevant because it
is rooted in principles of human behavior. Background McKinsey s 7 S Model In the book, In Search
of Excellence, Peters and Water identified eight common features of excellent organizations, which
they defined as organizations which have achieved sustained profitability and innovation. These
features were: A

Hermes Case Study
Scope of activities Hermes main scopes of activities are The Leather Goods Saddlery, The Clothing
and Accessories, The Silk and Textiles Division and Perfumes and Watchmaking divisions. The main
activity of the group, leather goods and saddlery has multiplied by nearly 3.5 in eight years, thanks to
the construction of several manufacturing and supply development. The Clothing and Accessories
division s sales have increased, by 17% per year since 2008, particularly about the success of the new
loan to product collections. Thanks to the success of the traditional Hermès squares and the
development of the offer, the sales of the division. Silk and Textiles grew, on average, 14.0% per year
between since 2008. o Extent of geographical coverage Hermès International s main geographic
market, the Asia Pacific zone (excluding Japan) growth was driven by the opening of new stores in
Macao, Hong Kong and China, as well as the expansion of two stores in Singapore. This region has
been the most dynamic in recent years. On the contrary, in Japan the sales are not as expected recently
due to economic reasons. The American continent also represents a major outlet for Hermès
International. Lately, Hermes opened a store in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), moved its store in Philadelphia
(United States ) for a larger site, and reopened its Honolulu (Hawaii) store. Hermès International

Preliminary Bias And The Wason 2-4-6 Paradigm
In this experiment, we will investigate whether previous participation in a confirmation bias
experiment plus full knowledge of confirmation bias and the Wason 2 4 6 paradigm will lead to a
higher initial success rate with future testing. A confirmation bias usually occurs when participants are
trying to confirm their beliefs during an experiment. During these experiments, participants results
varied between confirmatory and disconfirmatory. The Tukey HSD that was performed for the
experiments showed some significance in certain areas. For instance, there was a statistical
significance for the total number of guesses between rule one and rule three. More simply, in the first
experiment the results showed participants used confirmatory method more for rule one than rule
three. For the second experiment participants had more knowledge about the experiment, so their use
of the confirmatory method decreased. However, in the second experiment participants used
disconfirmatory more for rule three than they did in rule one. Furthermore, all the experiments were
similar, because participants had to guess a rule based off a three number sequence. Additionally, there
was a significant interaction between all the rules. According to the results, rule one and three had a
statistical significance for the total number of guesses. More simply, participants in the first
experiment made less guesses than participants in the second experiment. Additionally, there was a
significance for the

Failure Definition Essay
Success is something that is earned, not given. It s setting a goal for yourself and not letting failure try
and stop you. Failure is a hard lesson to learn, but it teaches us not to give up and to keep trying.
Failure is part of the journey to success. Downs happen so the ups can follow. Failure just makes us
work harder for what we want. The most rewarding thing is overcoming the obstacles and reaching
full potential. Bella Throne was like any other kid her age, excited to start school. Though, when she
started 1st grade she couldn t read or write as well as the other kids. This was because she had a
condition called Dyslexia. Her brain would mix up letters like B and D , and M and W . When Bella

Comparing Gilgamesh And Candid
A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes
opportunities of his difficulties. (Harry S. Truman) The stories of Gilgamesh and Candid have
underlying themes of optimism. This is because both, Gilgamesh and Candid faced horrible tragedies
in their lives. Through their tragedies though, they both chose to push through these challenges and
make the best out of their situations. They went through horrible trials and when one would think that
they should give up they still try to find the best out if a bad situation. This shows true optimism
because they did not dwell on the bad days. Instead, they made the best of their situation

He then sent out to find Untapishtim which is where he thought eternal life would be. The first place
his journey takes him is the twin peaked mountains called Musha. After rushing through the tunnel to
beat the sun he emerges into a beautiful garden by the sea that s where he meets Siduri. Siduri warns
him that immortality is futile and he should be satisfied with his life and what he has. He doesn t listen
to Siduri and insists on moving forward being optimistic about finding eternal life. When Gilgamesh
arrives to Untapishtim, he demands that he should be granted with eternal life. Utnapishtim gives him
a test, Prevail against sleep, and perhaps you will prevail against death. (Mitchell, 191) Gilgamesh
accepts this challenge, but fails immediately. Untapishtim orders him to return to Uruk, but he tells
Gilgamesh of a spiny plant that grows in the water of the Great Deep. A miraculous plant that would
restore youth. Gilgamesh goes and retrieves the plant. He plans to share it with the elders of Uruk, but
before he could reach the city a snake steals the plant away. Gilgamesh did not return emptyhanded.
He instead came back with the acceptance of mortality and a name for himself.

Persuasive Speech On Babysitting
Many teenagers turn toward babysitting as a means of earning money. However, the first time a person
babysits can be nerve wracking. Children are unimaginably important to their parents. It takes a lot of
trust for a parent to put his or her child in the care and protection of a babysitter. This puts an immense
amount of pressure on a babysitter to be perfect. Despite all the stress babysitting can bring, it is easy
if you follow four simple rules. When first arriving at the house, it is important to ask for all the
necessary contact and emergency information, so that if anything bad happened, you would know who
to call and what to do. Because an emergency is a high stress situation, you could easily forget the
emergency information. It is helpful to write down the information as you receive it and putting it
somewhere that is readily available. This eliminates the possibility of forgetting the information and
ensures that you can handle an emergency quickly and effectively.
Along with emergency and contact information, ask about the child s typical schedule when they eat
meals, if and/or when they take a nap, and other basic rules the parent has. Do your best to stick to
these schedules, but do not force the schedule on the child. Sometimes kids get tired sooner than
naptime or are not hungry at dinnertime. This is completely okay. Do not be afraid to upset the parent
by not following the schedule strictly. Generally, children are unpredictable and schedules are only

The Effect Of Peer Pressure On Children
Just take one sip, your half drunk best friend says. You know you do not want to, but you are hesitant
to say no, why? Children and teenagers everywhere are being constantly pestered by their peers to do
what is cool in order to fit in. Unfortunately, some people will cave in to the enticing offer in order to
keep their friends and a popular reputation. This is known as peer pressure. Peer pressure is the
influence an individual feels from a person or group of people around his/her age to do something
he/she would not consider trying. In addition, peer pressure provides a number of negative effects
such as, tempting an individual to try bad activities, causing him/her to rely too much on the group of
people, and leading a person poor choices. There are a surplus amount of negative effects peer
pressure can provide for adolescents around the world. One negative effect of peer pressure is it will
tempt an individual to try bad activities. To begin, by being with immature friends that encourage
wrong activities, they can influence he/she to make those bad decisions. Most teenagers what to be
popular or fit in, so they feel obligated to do what is favored amongst their peers. Even though
teenagers know it is the wrong decision, they are still hesitant to say no. In addition, once an
individual tried a bad activity, it starts to become a habit. According to the Underage Research
Drinking Initiative, ⅔ of tenth graders and ⅖ of eighth graders tried alcohol. As a result,

The Effect Of The On Crystallization Of Lysozyme Protein...
This experiment studied the effects different conditions in a reservoir played on the crystallization of
lysozyme protein crystals. Two different conditions were tested in order to find the suitable
combination to yield the largest tetragonal lysozyme crystals that could be utilized in protein structure
identification. The concentration of sodium chloride and the pH levels were subjectively increased
across twelve separate reservoir solutions. Utilizing the hanging drop method, the solutions were left
to crystallize over the span of two weeks. Following the time span, it was found that as the sodium
chloride concentrations increased, production of protein crystals increased. In addition, it was also
found that with an increased pH level in the wells the crystals produced were more defined, larger and
feasible for the tetragonal shape characteristic of lysozyme crystals.
Introduction
Over the past few decades, the scientific community s knowledge of protein structure has increased
exponentially. Through the use of NMR and, primarily, X ray crystallography, valuable information
pertaining to the three dimensional structure of proteins and enzymes alike have been found and
recorded. Understanding protein structures and crystallography methods plays a major role in
purifying drugs as well as pharmaceutical design in order to efficiently deliver drugs in to the body.
(Durbin, Feher, 1996) The formation of viable protein crystals is necessary for crystallography.

The Really Big One By Kathryn Schulz
The Really Big One is an article by Kathryn Schulz about the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a fault line
that runs seven hundred miles along the West Coast. It consists of two tectonic plates where one plate
is sliding underneath another. In this case, the oceanic plate Juan de Fuca is sliding under the
continental plate known as the North American plate. In her article, Schulz repeats the words of
seismologists and scientists alike in the opinion that the Cascadia Subduction Zone is overdue for a
magnitude 9.0 or higher earthquake and resulting tsunami. No one in the Pacific Northwest is prepared
for it. With historical stories and examples from around the world Schulz warns of the damage to be
done when the Really Big One finally makes itself known.
In her article, Schulz uses three rhetorical appeals. These appeals are called Ethos, Pathos, and Logos.
Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, created these terms to refer specifically to the different ways they
appeal to the reader. Ethos is used to establish credibility, Pathos refers to emotion, and Logos is the
appeal to logic. While the article is packed full of history, science and facts, it s the appeal to emotion
that really draws in the readers and instills curiosity and a desire for action. Schulz s article is split into
five sections. The first section introduces the readers to Chris Goldfinger, a paleoseismologist at
Oregon State University. Goldfinger was at a seismology conference in Kashiwa, Japan when the 2011

Human Rights Speech Essay
If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, it is that human rights are women s
rights.... And women s rights are human rights proclaims Hillary Clinton in her speech entitled,
Women s Rights are Humans Rights. Clinton is widely known as the democratic candidate running in
the 2016 presidential election, but previously was known for delivering her powerful women s rights
speeches all over the globe. This address was given in Beijing, the capital of China, on September 5,
1995 at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women. This powerful address on women s
rights presents how there should not be a difference between human rights and women s rights; that
they are identical. Clinton wields her ethos, pathos, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being invited by the secretary general of the United Nations makes her credibility appear stronger,
because it is an honor to be invited by someone of such importance to a national organization. She
also states, Tomorrow, I will attend a gathering of the United Nations Development Fund for women,
(Clinton). Again being invited by the UN. Clinton s expertise on the topic also helps her credibility.
Clinton states, Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women,
children, and families. Her providing the amount of time she has worked with women s rights and that
she has worked continuously on these issues makes her more credible. Being a woman provides
enough credibility to be able to speak on the rights of women, but traveling to other countries and
seeing how their women are treated contributes a proper understanding of how dire the situation truly
is.
A final element which makes this speech effective is the use of style. Towards the middle of Clinton s
speech, she is talking about the violation of human rights. She begins seven sentences with It is a
violation of human rights... and using this phrase provides power for her statements:
It is a violation of human rights when babies are denied food...

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings Poem
In her poem, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou The bird sings because it wants her
freedom. I think the caged bird also sings because she is bored or probable she needs distraction
because she does not have nothing to do alone. I guess the bird is also calling someone because she
might need something. Also i think the bird is ignored by the people that have the bird captured. I
think this paragraph has to do with The Long Walk Home because Odessa can not do nothing by her
choice. I also think she can t do nothing by herself in the movie. I think people should know this
because it s sad that in the past people had to do that for white people. For me i think the poem and the
movie are at least alike. Odessa cannot do stuff in the house because the owners might get mad at her
but the wife stands up for the black people for me that was a good choice because black people are
people they are not toys. Odessa is related to the caged bird because she can t go to places. This
supports my claim because people right now are not locked up for slaves. This also supports my claim
because black people are not toys they are people that do work for them to get money but what they
do in that day is not okay because they are slaves. My discussion is that slaves should be treated nice
not bad. The only places she can go is home and church. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay On Gender Pay Gap
Women have been fighting for equal rights for 227 years, and at this point now we ve reached a
breaking point, said Patricia Arquette (Cavanaugh, L. V). Over the past century, women in the United
States have made progress in increasing their employment experience and skills. But despite women s
gains in experience, education and skill, a 20 percent gender pay gap still exists.
According to the Institute for Women s Policy Research, women make up half of the workforce today
and 40 percent of women are either equal to their male counterparts or the singular breadwinners in
their household (Institute for Women s Policy Research). And most Americans find women are better

The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap (Spring 2016). (n.d.). Retrieved September 12, 2016.
Companies can do their part in closing the wage gap among men and women by changing their
policies. For the wage gap to close sooner than 136 years from now, everyone needs to work together.
Companies need to conduct salary examinations to monitor and address gender based pay differences.
By changing the company policy women will have access to their male colleagues salaries and can
determine whether the employer is being fair or not.
Companies can also do their part in closing the wage gap by improving their paid sick days policies.
Nearly 40 million workers in the United States do not have access to paid sick days. The amount of
part time workers who do not have paid sick days is even higher at 73 percent. Because of the lack of
paid sick leave, many workers in the United States must go to work sick and if their children are sick
they must either send them to school sick or leave them at home alone because they fear that by
missing work they will be punished or even fired (Glynn, S. J.; Fisher, M.; and Baxter

After a review of nanotechnology initiatives, it is surprising that the Programa Especial does not make
any reference to the possible risks to health and the environment related to the use of nanotechnology
neither its ethical and legal implications, nor the public participation in what many scientists see as the
most important technological revolution of the 21st century. The absence of concern associated with
the use of nanotechnology in México becomes worrying because of the increasing number of
laboratories in the area. Furthermore, many of them are already using clean rooms and very
sophisticated equipment with the main objective of encouraging the production of nanocomponents
for the industrial sector. In the same vein, Argentina and Brazil do not have a program to discuss the
implications and risks of nanotechnology, or a plan to supervise the activities related to

Michael Porter s The Competitive Advantage Of The Inner City
The essay The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City by Michael Porter, addresses the crisis of
inner cities, in particular, the economic distress and how to fix it. Porter discusses the advantages and
disadvantages of the inner city, and how previous efforts to improve the conditions of the city have
failed. Many past efforts were guided by the desire to meet the needs of individuals but not the city as
a whole, even programs that were aimed at economic development were ineffective because they
treated the inner city as an isolated island (317), separated from surrounding economy which favored
local small business that did not bring in outside business.
Michael Porter is a renowned economist and professor of Business Administration at the Harvard
Business School, author of 18 books and more than 125 articles with topics that range from industry
competition to economic development. Porter was born in Michigan and went on to study aerospace
and mechanical engineering in Princeton from where he graduated first in his class and with high
honors from both the prestigious societies Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi, which he was also elected
into. He is known as the c and is recognized worldwide for his take on competition and company
strategy, many say that his work has redefined the thought process related to competition and
economic development. Some of his most influential books include Competitive Strategy: Techniques
for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior
Performance and Redefining Health Care: Creating Value Based Competition On Results.
In the essay, The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City, Porter explained the reason that numerous
past efforts failed to improve the economic conditions of the inner city were mainly due to the
increasing social investment in order to see growth in economic activity. However, in order to create
real change, we have to start with the notion that inner city businesses should not only be profitable
but also capable of exporting goods and services (317). Many would think that a business in the inner
city would not thrive because business prosperity depends on location, however, it also varies on the
way a

John White Roanoke Colony Analysis
Imagine, a small colony of about 110 people peacefully getting settled into their new lives in North
America only to vanish three years later without a trace. This was a reality for John White as the only
thing he came back to in the colony of Roanoke was the word CROATOAN and the mystery of their
disappearance. In 1587, John White and a small band of people set foot on Roanoke Island and formed
a colony. This colony was made up of about 110 English men, women and children, and although
small, they ran through their supplies very quickly. Just a few short months after they had settled,
Governor White hesitantly decided to return to England for much need support and goods, leaving his
family and colonists behind. Unfortunately for him, the day he set sail was the last day he ever saw
them. John White s decision to return to England for supplies was made at a bad time for the country.
Upon his arrival Britain was facing an impending invasion by the Spanish Armada and he found
himself trapped in England because of this crisis. It took two years for the English to defeat the
Spanish Armada, and by the time the fighting was over White set sail, yet again, to return to his
colony. He set foot on Roanoke soil August 18th, 1590, three years after he had left for England. What

Design New Services For Jamuna Bank
Service design and development is very important for a bank like Jamuna that is our concern now.
From our observation we find out that they are far behind then other banking service providers. So in
this section they have to come up with new plans and findings.
If we are thinking about design new services for Jamuna Bank then we have to find out those sectors
where we are going to implement those programs. From our findings we come to know about they are
much behind in online banking, customer service, ATM system and infrastructure. So in this sectors
we need to work more to satisfy our second God, our customers.

Significance Of The Magazine
There are a lot of excellent significant landmarks that can be commemorated by a coin by the colonial
Williamsburg foundation; but here are the four structures that are worthy of being commemorated:
The Bruton Parish Church, the Capitol, the Governor s Palace, and the Magazine. Commemorate
means to honor a certain place or a person. All these structures are important, but the most significant
structure to commemorate is clearly the Magazine. According to my research, the Magazine is the best
choice because it succeeds all of the goals it has to meet, it has a lot of historical significance, it is

Marketing Is A Complex Network Of Processes
The average person may not realize that marketing is a complex network of processes; not just product
advertising (Kerin, Hartley, Rudelius, 2011). One might think of marketing as just the product
advertising side of things in the world of goods and services. A large amount of people might not
understand that marketing is a much more diverse set of steps, not just billboards and commercials.
Marketing is the process that covers product distribution and concepts ranging all the way from
realization of consumer needs to satisfaction of the need with a finished product or service (Kerin et
al, 2011). This process is covered through the four factors of the marketing mix (Kerin et al, 2011).
Need
A product that I need is laundry detergent. I have two teenage sons, so laundry is a constant in my
household. Therefore, a reliable laundry detergent is a must. Tide detergent that is a constant in the
grocery cart of my family. It is reliable and a consistent performer that satisfies the needs of our
family. Tide satisfies the need of clean clothing in my household. The marketing program of Tide is
set up to sufficiently cover the demand for this product (Kerin, et al, 2011). There is a set price and
there has been adequate promotion of the product. As a consumer, I am aware of the product, the
benefits, and the availability of the product. Tide advertising focuses on a simple message that
consumers can find easily relatable. This allows the consumer to find a common

Electronic Cigarettes Persuasive Essay
Before you save others, you must save yourself first. Secondhand smoke kills a lot of people. How can
you stop killing others when you can t stop smoking? A cigarette smoker smells like burnt ashes.
Some non smokers don t like the odor and they find it very irritating. According to Wisegeek, smoking
has been banned in most restaurants, hospitals, and work environments in the United States. We all
know that smoking can cause a lot of health disease that can shorten your lifespan. It s hard to quit
smoking specially when you ve been smoking for a long time already, but the number one solution to
this is by using electronic cigarettes instead of tobacco cigarettes. It may be difficult for the smokers to

I personally can t stand the smell of cigarettes. I would rather smell the vapor because it has different
flavors and all of them smells good. I know that there s a lot of time that a couple argued because his

you don t want to kiss your children if you just smoke because they can get irritated. If no one likes
the smell of a vehicle s exhaust, of course no one would also like the odor of a smoke coming from a
cigarette. I don t think smoker s kids like when they smoke inside their house because the smell sticks
to everything. If you are going on a work interview you want to look decent, so you better not smoke
because it will stay in your shirt and the interviewers will smell you. A lot of people, mostly smokers,
have no idea that there is a third hand smoke. A third hand smoke is the linger that was left in a shirt,
sofa, and any other materials after the cigarette is put out. It s a health hazard for babies because their
senses are still sensitive. E cigarettes boosts your self confidence because it takes away all the
negative qualities that people find unappealing about cigarettes. It doesn t leave smell in your car,

Merit Pay Benefits
The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows. This quote by Sydney J. Harris notes
that schooling provides opportunities and guides career paths. The effectiveness of teachers can cause
a generation of workers, parents, and students to prosper or fail. Yet, with such a burden on their
shoulders, they have one of the lowest paying professions. Teachers deserve more money than
$54,740 to $58,170 a year. Merit pay should be incorporated into all U.S. school systems. The single
salary schedule that schools use now does not reward more hardworking teachers effectively.
According to All Teachers Are Not the Same , the single salary schedule was implemented in the 1950
s to provide equality between female and male teachers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, Merit pay programs aimed at groups of teachers who worked together to earn incentive
pay, as opposed to individuals competing against one another, resulted in an effect more than two
times the average (Iasevoli). Regardless of competition, teachers who work together are the ones who
get the rewards. Teachers will realize cooperation is key to getting benefits. Also, the teachers who
aren t getting rewards for their effectiveness won t have as strong as a reason as others to stay in the
profession, Thus, they would leave which weeds out the ineffective teachers. The equally important
text Merit Pay for Teachers Can Lead to Higher Test Scores for Students, a Study Finds points out,
teacher participation in a merit pay program led to the equivalent of four extra weeks of student
learning, according to a new analysis of 44 studies of incentive pay initiatives in the United States and
abroad. With merit pay in place, teachers will be more dedicated to teaching with benefits in mind,
will be able to get more and better materials, and could be less stressed which can reflect on the
students. Students would be affected positively from merit pay because the classroom environment
would be more helpful and the bad teachers would either work harder or leave. The claim that merit
pay has a negative impact on teachers and students is not always true, and in reality, merit pay may be

What role does the landscape play in contributing to...
In this essay I will consider the roles of city and country in three short stories; Water Them Geraniums
by Henry Lawson, Short Shift Saturday by Gavin Casey, and Trees Can Speak by Alan Marshall. I
will argue through contributing to character development, they provide insight into the construction of
contempory Australian identity. In Water Them Geraniums the outback is shown to be an emasculating
force, particularly for women, that strips away their humanity until they function in a mechanical way
to survive off the land. In Short Shift Saturday the narrator is a product of an inherited colonial culture
and imagines that it is the alien landscape and culture in which he lives that is the agent of his
suffering. In reality, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is particularly true for the female characters. Mary and Mrs Spicer, whose family is the Wilson s
only neighbour, both die pre maturely. As Mary says, she can t stand life in the outback, which she
says will kill her.
Mrs Spicer is a gaunt and flat chested woman whose face has been burnt to a brick . She is a little wild
looking at times and when working she wears clothes like an old coat of her husband s , to do what
would have traditionally been considered male tasks such as fixing a leak in the roof. When she helps
Mary lay the table, the way she handles the crockery and napkins convinces Mary that she had been
fairly well brought up .
Mrs Spicer is the incarnation of Mary s destiny if she continues to live in the bush. She is a woman
whose femininity has been ground down by a hard working and poverty stricken life providing for
herself and her many children and whom at the end of the story, dies at a comparatively young age. In
order to survive in country which is no place for a woman , she has had to become a man. Poverty has
stripped her of any luxuries and what possessions she has are worn. The story puts forward that
women treasure attractive or stylish objects because they are the hallmarks of civilisation. Both the
main female characters in this story display this tendency such as when Mary becomes disheartened as

Marina Lambrini Diamandis Research Paper
Marina Lambrini Diamandis was born on the tenth of October in 1985 in Brynmawr, Wales, though
she grew up in a small town named Pandy. She only had one sibling; an older sister. Most of her
inspiration came from her childhood music teacher who told her she could she could do anything.
Diamandis went to the University of East London to study music for a year, and then transferred to
Middlesex University for a classic composition course, where she dropped out two months in. While
Marina was a teen, she spent a lot of time going to auditions, which all turned out to be unsuccessful.
She had chances to perform in The Lion King, and be in a boy band, but she ended up falling ill so she
ultimately could not audition for either. Her stage name, Marina and the Diamonds was created in
2005. Diamandis did not have any band members, so she came to the conclusion that Diamonds stood
for her fans. Marina released her first song Mermaid vs. Sailor , which she self produced. Obsessions
was the second song she released, on the fourteenth of February, 2009. That December, she was

Canadian Senate Reform
The legislative branch of the Canadian government is divided between an upper house, the Senate, and
a lower house, the House of Commons. This system is known as a bicameral legislature, and is a
feature of many governments. In Canada, much of the legislative and executive power lies in the
House of Commons, and by extension the Prime Minister. The Senate, however, exists in its current
form primarily for the purpose of legislative review. Despite the Senate s seemingly negligible role, or
perhaps because of it, it is the most criticized institution of government in Canada (Franks, 1988).
While it has remained largely unchanged, movements aimed at either Senate reform or abolition, have
been essential to Canadian politics for much of recent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Notwithstanding the many shortcomings of the Senate, it is an important institution that serves an
essential purpose. Although it is rarely commended publicly for its accomplishments, other public
servants and academics praise the Senate for the breadth and quality of its investigative and scrutiny
functions in committee (Smith, 2003). In order to understand the Senate, one must distinguish the
roles of the upper and lower houses. While the House of Commons serves the elective function of
making or unmaking government the Senate is not a confidence chamber and thus serves a distinct,
yet equally relevant role (Smith, 2003). The Senate, and bicameralism more broadly, was instituted as
a constraint on government. Its justification rests on obstruction: rather than empower, it restrains
government (Smith, 2003). This impediment to the unchecked power of the House of Commons
justifies the preservation of the Senate as an institution. While some consider the Senate unnecessary
or redundant, it is an essential element of Canadian government. However, despite its significance, it
is not particularly well liked and some consider it to be the most criticized institution of government in
Canada (Frank, 1988). For over sixty years, the issue of Senate reform or abolition has been inherent
to Canadian political discourse (Frank, 1988). Given the importance of the Senate in Canadian

Major Environmental Problems Plaguing Louisiana
Environment, a term used to describe the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or

pollution and wetland loss. Presently, Louisiana and the city of Baton Rouge are dealing with
dangerous flood levels. According to (Yan et al., 2016), a Red Cross member stated that the
catastrophic flooding in Louisiana is the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since
Hurricane Sandy two years ago (para. 1). Louisiana anticipates it will cost $30 million in relief funds
to repair flood damages (Yan et al., 2016). More than 7 trillion gallons of water fell in Louisiana and
Mississippi over the course of eight days (Sergent et al., 2016). There have been at least 13 deaths

in the House of Representatives agencies to support to Congress. The president, vice president, and
the cabinet are what hold the executive branch and their key roles are carrying out and enforcing laws.
The judicial branch has interpreted the meaning of the laws, applies laws to individual cases, and
decides if laws violate the Constitution, as described in the website ( United States America, n.d). The
Supreme Court and other federal courts are part of the judicial branch. Benefits, consumer products

mage fusion based on fuzzy sets
The fuzzy logic approach is widely used in image process ing. The fuzzy logic gives decision rules
and fusion motivation for image fusion [17]. the two inputs images are converted into membership
values based on a set of predefined MFs, where the degree of membership of each input pixel to a
fuzzy set is determined. Then, the fusion operators are applied to the fuzzified images. The fusion
results are then converted back into pixel values using defuzzification.

How Did Malcolm X Impact The Black Community
Have you ever wanted to know who was one of the greatest leaders of time that fought for slavery?
Malcolm X was assassinated on February 21, 1965 by a radical member of the Nation of Islam named
Talmadge X Hayer. He entered the Audubon Ballroom armed and then killed Malcolm X as he was
giving his speech, which would have made this his last one. Talmadge X Hagan thought that Malcolm
X was going to destroy the Nation of Islam after he had left, so he then decided to kill Malcolm X.
The assassination of Malcolm X left a huge impact on the black community. Malcolm X s

Disadvantages Of Synchronous Transverter
Another advantage of the synchronous converter is that it is bi directional, which lends itself to
applications requiring regenerative braking. When power is transferred in the reverse direction, it acts
much like a boost converter.
The upsides of the synchronous buck converter don t come without cost. To start with, the lower
switch normally costs more than the freewheeling diode. Second, the multifaceted nature of the
converter is unfathomably expanded because of the requirement for a reciprocal yield switch driver.
Such a driver must keep both changes from being turned on in the meantime, a blame known as
shootthrough . The most straightforward procedure for dodging shootthrough is a period delay

The multiphase buck converter is a circuit topology where fundamental buck converter circuits are put
in parallel between the information and load. Each of the n phases is turned on at equally spaced
intervals over the switching period. This circuit is typically used with the synchronous buck topology,
described above.
This kind of converter can react to load changes as fast as though it exchanged n times speedier,
without the expansion in exchanging misfortunes that would bring about. Subsequently, it can react to
quickly evolving burdens, for example, present day chip.
There is additionally a noteworthy diminishing in exchanging swell. Not exclusively is there the
reduction due to the expanded viable frequency,[4] but any time that n times the duty cycle is an
integer, the changing swell goes to 0; the rate at which the inductor current is expanding in the stages
which are exchanged on precisely coordinates the rate at which it is diminishing in the stages which

Funding Higher Education For Universities
Introduction In the world of higher education today, many universities are facing tight budgets.
Funding higher education has become a major issue for institutions across the nation for various
reasons. University endowments are not what they use to be before the financial crisis in 2008
(Weisbrod Asch, 2010). State appropriations to universities are down and are not as much as they once
were in the past. With a decline in state appropriations, public institutions have been forced to rely
more on tuition revenue. Universities are now competing more than ever with each other to get
students to attend their institution so that they can receive their tuition revenue. As tuition increases,

Separately we are weak, but together we are strong. Ultimately, due to a plethora of reasons, higher
education funding has become difficult and resulted in higher tuition for students and to combat this
issue, university and business partnerships need to be created and become a major goal which will
yield benefits for both parties involved.
University Funding Issues Funding colleges and universities has become a crisis for the higher
education system in America. The higher education funding issue is not caused by one issue but rather
multiple issues like endowment losses, falling investments, declining donations, declining state
appropriations, and increased student financial aid which leads to a decreased tuition revenue
(Weisbrod Asch, 2010). Some of these funding issues create other funding issues like an increase in
tuition revenue that creates an increase in student financial aid and then decreases the tuition revenue
resulting in lower funds for the institution. Since the economic downturn in 2007 and 2008 and even
before then, there has been a decline in state appropriations to public colleges and universities
(Weisbrod Asch, 2010). Colleges and universities believe that lawmakers have lost faith and do not
believe in them, which have resulted in the significant and constant loss of state appropriations to
higher education (Longanecker, 2006).

Figurative Language In Mirrors By Justin Timberlake
The song Mirrors by Justin Timberlake has a lot of figurative language I will prove a couple cases
where that is true.
Mirrors by Justin Timberlake has a lot of simile. A simile is a figure of speech involving the
comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind. It is used to make a description more
empathic or vivid. The quote it s like you re my mirror from the song is a simile you know for a fact
that it is a simile because a person cannot be a mirror. So Justin Timberlake is comparing a mirror to a

The term personality refers to the characteristics that one is made up of, the influences over time, and
overall reactions that occur through different stimuli. It has been defined by different people as the

Value by Suffering, Setting, and Dreams
Possessions on your back and a dream in your head. Imagine living your day to day life without a job
or a home. Going from place to place, farm to farm, just looking for your next meal. Whether you are
able to put yourself in this place or not it will always have been the lives of George and Lennie.
Lennie s troublemaking actions, and George s controlling trai Their struggles and those of people
during the Great Depression are unfortunate, but are the fuel for Of Mice and Men s value. This book
holds value historically, because of its setting and the struggles presented because of it.
John Steinbeck uses thoroughly developed characters to thicken the plot of Of Mice and Men. He uses
distinct features and qualities to differentiate one character from the next. The differences between
characters is what creates several of the conflicts in the novella. Curley s antagonistic character toward
people of large stature causes tension between himself and Lennie, instantly creating conflict. The
conflicts in the plot are what makes Of Mice and Men entertaining. Lennie is not conscious of some of
his actions. He does before he thinks. Attention is directed toward him, drawing the reader s attention
in and making them want to know how things will be taken care of. Lennie is talking to Curley s wife
about how he likes to pet soft things. She then mentions how soft her own hair is. Lennie instantly
begins to pet her hair. She wants him to stop, but Lennie gets scared and covers her mouth, and later
breaking her neck leading to death. Lennie s big fingers fell to stroking her hair. Don t you muss it up,
she said. Lennie said Oh that s nice, and he stroked harder. Oh that s nice. ... Lennie was in a panic.
His face was contorted. She screamed then, and Lennie s other hand closed over her mouth and nose

Because of this, Lennie gets into trouble with Curley. Not only was Lennie s size a problem for

Case Study Of The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore
OWNERSHIP
The Ritz Carlton, Millenia Singapore
Ritz Carlton management contract is with Marriott International. 80% of Ritz Carlton is owned by the
Kwee Brothers, namely Kwee Liong Keng, Kwee Liong Tek, Kwee Liong Seen and Kwee Liong
Phing. The other 20% is owned by the Singapore Airlines.
Fraser Residence Orchard, Singapore
Fraser Residence Orchard, Singapore property is owned by Eastern Realty Company Limited and
managed by Frasers Hospitality Pte Ltd.
ORGANISATION STRUCTURE
Job Specialization
The accommodations, Ritz Carlton and Fraser Residence both practice job specialisation with the
given specific roles to perform every day. Each employee has a primary role in the company where
they have to fulfill. Ritz Carlton has a higher degree of job specialisation as each employee performs
each of his or her own tasks. For example, during our site visit, the person who greeted and opens the
door for us is different from the person who assisted us with our enquiries at the concierge. ... Show

As a result, Ritz Carlton has a wider span of control where one manager is in charge of greater number
of employees. Whereas Fraser Residence will have a narrow span of control as they have a smaller
team with lesser departments. Too wide of a span of control can decrease the effectiveness of
managers as they spend more time managing their subordinates instead of performing other important
duties. For example referring to the organisation chart in appendix I, the front office manager in Ritz
Carlton has 3 sub department managers that reports to him/her (Security manager, reservation
manager and chief concierge). On the other hand, the front office manager in Fraser Residence has
only 1 sub department manager that reports to him/ her (Reservation supervisor).

There Are Three Lines To Live In The Labyrinth
Notwithstanding, in the same text (we could, of course, quote many others), there is also evidence of
an acquaintance with the pre socratic unity of opposites (later adapted by Nicolau of Cusa to the idea
of God), by means of which a straight line is potentially no different from a circular line (plus, a
formulation that is also reminiscent of Zeno s Paradoxes of Motion):
There are three lines too many in your labyrinth, he said at last. I know of a Greek labyrinth that is but
one straight line. So many philosophers have been lost upon that line that a mere detective might be
pardoned if he became lost as well. When you hunt me down in another avatar of our lives, Scharlach,
I suggest that you fake (or commit) one crime at A, a second crime at B, eight kilometers from A, then
a third crime at C, four kilometers from A and B and halfway between them. Then wait for me at D,
two kilometers from A and C, once again halfway between them. Kill me at D, as you are about to kill
me at Triste le Roy.

In another context, specifically concerned with reading as a process, american literary critic and
theorist Robert Scholes, adds the metaphor of a two dimensional circle composed of centrifugal and
centripetal postures (Scholes 1989: 8) to the one dimensional straight line made of backwards and
forwards. But he does not discard the latter, although he thinks that the circle covers a lot more
territory. (8) Instead, he argues that reading is dialectical , meaning

How Did The Founding Fathers Maintain Religious Freedom In...
After the revolutionary war the founding fathers set out to create a new government that would be fair
and just, and that the people would control. One of the first concepts they knew they wanted to have
was religious freedom here in this new country. Previously when they were under British control the
church of england was the only church they were allowed to go to and worship in. The church of
england also had a say in the way they were governed. These two things frustrated the colonists very
much and they wanted to make sure they would never have anything like that again in their newly
established country. While writing the constitution the founding fathers said Congress shall make no
law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. When they said
this they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first reason is that it was tyrannical and against our unalienable rights to have a religion forced
upon us, one that a lot of people may not believe in, but they would still be forced to worship and
participate in church activities. This would no longer be a free country if we were forced to attend a
church. The second reason is the fact that having a national church would give them power to make
decisions in government and be able to control the citizens the when the citizens should have absolute
power over all laws being voted on and all elected representatives. The founding fathers wanted to
steer clear of all possible future tyranny which is why they created this separation of church and state
and freedom of religion. This was the best way to create a fair and just government for this new
country they just fought for to keep. If we did not have separation of church and state then I would not
be a free man writing this essay and I would most likely be forced to delete all of

Effects of Cell Phone
What is a cellphone?
Small wireless device that has at least the same functions of a standard wired telephone but is smaller
and more mobile. A cell phone requires a subscription to a service provider and requires either a
prepaid or monthly billing setup. Generally, they have more functions than traditional land lines and
need to be charged after a period of time. Also called mobile phone or mobile device.

A mobile phone (also known as a cellular phone, cell phone and a hand phone) is a device that can
make and receive telephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area. It
does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile phone operator, allowing access to

Prior to the expansion of mobile networks, agricultural producers were often unaware about prices and
had to rely on information from traders and agents, the report said.
Delays in obtaining this data or misinterpretation of second hand pricing information has serious
consequences for agricultural producers, who may end up underselling their products, delivering too
little or too much of the product, or having their products wither away, the World Bank said.
The study also mentioned Cebu City where taxi drivers use mobile phones with global positioning
systems to receive traffic data and dispatch information.
The report added that social media, along with messages, videos and pictures sent from mobile
phones, were useful tools for organizing protests and monitoring democracy and freedom.
Mobile communications offer major opportunities to advance human and economic development from
providing basic access to health information to making cash payments, spurring job creation, and
stimulating citizen involvement in democratic processes, said World Bank vice president for
sustainable development Rachel Kyte.
The challenge now is to enable people, businesses and governments in developing countries to
develop their own locally relevant mobile applications so they can take full advantage of these
opportunities, Kyte added.

Aristotle I Remember Mama Essay
Philosophy Through Film | Aristotle amp; I Remember Mama 1. In Aristotle, the good of man is
described as final and self sufficient. That is, the chief good is something final. This relates well to
Uncle Chris throughout the movie. Everyone was scared of him he drank, he drove fast and was quite
brash. However, when he died, his nieces discovered that there was no inheritance, because he had
been donating it to children with leg problems so that they didn t grow up and limp as he did. No one
knew, until that moment, that he was spending his money on children that he didn t even know (aside
from his nephew) so that they didn t suffer the pain that he did. These donations were his chief good,
and he could be described ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, when Mama spends Saturday evening counting the money that Papa has brought home
and divvying it among their bills, the kids are always as relieved as Mama that they don t have to go to
the bank. Only later did we find out that there was never a bank, but Mama didn t want to
unnecessarily worry her children. They were, after all, only children. Mama was always willing to do
anything to make her children happy, including selling the brooch that was her mother s in order to get
Katrin the dresser set that she had been eyeing for her graduation gift. When Christine told Katrin, it
was Christine that was admonished Mama, again, didn t want to worry her children. Finally, when
Aunt Trina came to tell Mama about wanting to marry Mr. Thorkelson, Mama took matters into her
own hands because Aunt Trina was afraid her sisters would laugh at her. Mama threatened to tell her
sisters secrets rather than let her timid sister be laughed at. 4. Also in Book II, Aristotle states that to
live a morally virtuous life one must avoid excess and defect. Drinking (or eating) above a certain
amount destroys the health. This is proven in Uncle Chris dying of the DTs. Although Uncle Chris was
a good man, he had vices and believed in indulging himself in pleasures, whether it be drinking,
driving fast or the pleasure of a woman. This last one, however, was once again perception, as they

Happiness and Moral Value
Happiness and Moral Virtue In Aristotle s Nicomachaen Ethics, the principle concern is the nature of
human well being. According to Aristotle, everything we do in life, we do for the sake of some good,
or at least something perceived to be good (1094a1 3). When inquiring as to whether there is some
good desired for its own sake, Aristotle envisioned a problem that either there is an infinite series of
goods desired for the sake of something higher, in which case one s desires can never be satisfied, or
there must be some highest good that is desired for its own sake and for which everything else is
desired (1094a17 22). Then, according to Aristotle, the highest good must be final, it must be desired
for its own sake and not for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This restricted audience can limit the perception of happiness, and the use of this knowledge. Those
who have serious doubts about the value of such virtuous qualities may not be convinced to adopt
them. One argument against Aristotle s view of virtue as a mean state between the extremes of excess
and deficiency would be social/moderate drinking of alcoholic beverages. Studies have shown that
drinking only two alcoholic beverages a day can lead to alcoholism, although, one could define this
behavior as acting in moderation, as one is not drinking to become intoxicated. As the alcoholism
develops one may display acts of rage, violence and theft as a result of the condition. Thus, through
use of moderation one displays character against moral virtue, and ultimately does not show
happiness. The only way to abolish such acts is to completely relinquish alcohol, exhibiting
deficiency. Through deficiency one would return to the state of character before the moderate use of
alcohol, whether virtuous or not. Aristotle also claims that justice and happiness is what is good for the
state, i.e. society, although society does not always act in accordance with moderation. During the
flourishing Roman society, citizens would consume food in a gluttonous matter, and vomit to consume
more. Though, from literature the individual citizens were conceived to be happy. Aristotle s sort of

  • 2. Employee Paid Time Effectively managing and retaining today s human capital is a continual process that is affected by every policy, procedure and decision related to people (Brundage Koziel, 2010). There are benefits of paid time off other than reducing the amount of unscheduled time off. Not all employers provide employees with paid time off, but for those that do it would be in the best interest of the organization to have a written policy to prevent confusion. First, employees are able to manage their work/life balance. If employees have 12 PTO days to use throughout the year, they will plan to use their PTO according to upcoming events in their lives. Employees will be able to schedule time off to take care of personal issues and leave some PTO available ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Spirometer Research Papers Abstract This paper presents a new approach towards the development of a spirometer on chip device for point of care (PoC) diagnostics. The proposed device consists of a cantilever based airflow sensor fabricated through a Multi User MEMS process (MUMPS). The deflection of each cantilever beam is measured using capacitive electrodes integrated on a single semiconductor chip. These electrodes are connected to an off chip custom made readout interface circuit for the measurement of minute capacitive changes and for the acquisition of data into a computer. Herein, we discuss and demonstrate the characterization results of such a system using a low complexity air based technique. Additionally, we demonstrate the applicability of these devices ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fundamentally, this ushers the opportunity to realize a single chip capable of replacing an entire diagnostic system present in contemporary clinical laboratories or hospitals. Among various clinical applications, the focus of this paper is placed on the development of a novel spirometer for lung disease sensing purposes. Lung diseases such as Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary (COP) disease affect the airways and cause inabilities to exhale normally. A spirometer is the most reliable tool for lung disease and with 100 million sufferers approximated worldwide [9] has the potential to improve care for significant numbers. Commercially available spirometers for measuring complicated lung functions are bulky, expensive and not suitable for PoC lung disease monitoring. Also the available spirometers in the market require disposable parts. Indeed the development of a mobile free breathing easy to use spirometer for frequent (e.g. daily) measurement of lung status is the key challenge to diagnosis and control of the disease in its early stages. To date many papers have reported the design and implementation of micro sensors for airflow or air velocity measurement using micromachining techniques [10 11]. Among these, Chen et al. reported the design and implementation of an array of hot wires ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Organizational and Change Management Models Models of Organizational Change Introduction The world is experiencing unprecedented changes in the structure and operation of organizations. This has increased the challenges that confront organizations. New competition from unexpected places is a huge challenge. So are the cultural issues that come with a diverse, opinionated, and often far flung workforce. The need for fast acting, effective, sustained organizational change will continue to increase. In fact, it will increase even more rapidly than it is now. The flattening of the world through globalization has sent market forces in new directions. Organizations must react to this increasingly chaotic market swiftly and effectively. The McKinsey 7 S Model and Lewin s three step model are two of the most influential models of organizational change in the business world. The McKinsey 7 S model emphasizes the role of structural factors in organizational change, while Lewin s three step model is rooted in behavioral factors. Thesis: The McKinsey 7 S model is grounded in questionable research methods and an excessive focus on structural factors. Lewin s three step model is more incisive and relevant because it is rooted in principles of human behavior. Background McKinsey s 7 S Model In the book, In Search of Excellence, Peters and Water identified eight common features of excellent organizations, which they defined as organizations which have achieved sustained profitability and innovation. These features were: A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Preliminary Bias And The Wason 2-4-6 Paradigm In this experiment, we will investigate whether previous participation in a confirmation bias experiment plus full knowledge of confirmation bias and the Wason 2 4 6 paradigm will lead to a higher initial success rate with future testing. A confirmation bias usually occurs when participants are trying to confirm their beliefs during an experiment. During these experiments, participants results varied between confirmatory and disconfirmatory. The Tukey HSD that was performed for the experiments showed some significance in certain areas. For instance, there was a statistical significance for the total number of guesses between rule one and rule three. More simply, in the first experiment the results showed participants used confirmatory method more for rule one than rule three. For the second experiment participants had more knowledge about the experiment, so their use of the confirmatory method decreased. However, in the second experiment participants used disconfirmatory more for rule three than they did in rule one. Furthermore, all the experiments were similar, because participants had to guess a rule based off a three number sequence. Additionally, there was a significant interaction between all the rules. According to the results, rule one and three had a statistical significance for the total number of guesses. More simply, participants in the first experiment made less guesses than participants in the second experiment. Additionally, there was a significance for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Failure is a hard lesson to learn, but it teaches us not to give up and to keep trying. Failure is part of the journey to success. Downs happen so the ups can follow. Failure just makes us work harder for what we want. The most rewarding thing is overcoming the obstacles and reaching full potential. Truman) The stories of Gilgamesh and Candid have underlying themes of optimism. This is because both, Gilgamesh and Candid faced horrible tragedies in their lives. Through their tragedies though, they both chose to push through these challenges and make the best out of their situations. They went through horrible trials and when one would think that they should give up they still try to find the best out if a bad situation. • 9. Persuasive Speech On Babysitting Many teenagers turn toward babysitting as a means of earning money. However, the first time a person babysits can be nerve wracking. Children are unimaginably important to their parents. It takes a lot of trust for a parent to put his or her child in the care and protection of a babysitter. This puts an immense amount of pressure on a babysitter to be perfect. Despite all the stress babysitting can bring, it is easy if you follow four simple rules. When first arriving at the house, it is important to ask for all the necessary contact and emergency information, so that if anything bad happened, you would know who to call and what to do. Because an emergency is a high stress situation, you could easily forget the emergency information. It is helpful to write down the information as you receive it and putting it somewhere that is readily available. This eliminates the possibility of forgetting the information and ensures that you can handle an emergency quickly and effectively. Along with emergency and contact information, ask about the child s typical schedule when they eat meals, if and/or when they take a nap, and other basic rules the parent has. Do your best to stick to these schedules, but do not force the schedule on the child. Sometimes kids get tired sooner than naptime or are not hungry at dinnertime. This is completely okay. Do not be afraid to upset the parent by not following the schedule strictly. Generally, children are unpredictable and schedules are only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Effect Of Peer Pressure On Children Just take one sip, your half drunk best friend says. You know you do not want to, but you are hesitant to say no, why? Children and teenagers everywhere are being constantly pestered by their peers to do what is cool in order to fit in. Unfortunately, some people will cave in to the enticing offer in order to keep their friends and a popular reputation. This is known as peer pressure. Peer pressure is the influence an individual feels from a person or group of people around his/her age to do something he/she would not consider trying. In addition, peer pressure provides a number of negative effects such as, tempting an individual to try bad activities, causing him/her to rely too much on the group of people, and leading a person poor choices. There are a surplus amount of negative effects peer pressure can provide for adolescents around the world. One negative effect of peer pressure is it will tempt an individual to try bad activities. To begin, by being with immature friends that encourage wrong activities, they can influence he/she to make those bad decisions. Most teenagers what to be popular or fit in, so they feel obligated to do what is favored amongst their peers. Even though teenagers know it is the wrong decision, they are still hesitant to say no. • 11. The Effect Of The On Crystallization Of Lysozyme Protein... This experiment studied the effects different conditions in a reservoir played on the crystallization of lysozyme protein crystals. Two different conditions were tested in order to find the suitable combination to yield the largest tetragonal lysozyme crystals that could be utilized in protein structure identification. The concentration of sodium chloride and the pH levels were subjectively increased across twelve separate reservoir solutions. Utilizing the hanging drop method, the solutions were left to crystallize over the span of two weeks. Following the time span, it was found that as the sodium chloride concentrations increased, production of protein crystals increased. In addition, it was also found that with an increased pH level in the wells the crystals produced were more defined, larger and feasible for the tetragonal shape characteristic of lysozyme crystals. Introduction Over the past few decades, the scientific community s knowledge of protein structure has increased exponentially. Through the use of NMR and, primarily, X ray crystallography, valuable information pertaining to the three dimensional structure of proteins and enzymes alike have been found and recorded. Understanding protein structures and crystallography methods plays a major role in purifying drugs as well as pharmaceutical design in order to efficiently deliver drugs in to the body. (Durbin, Feher, 1996) The formation of viable protein crystals is necessary for crystallography. Varying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Really Big One By Kathryn Schulz The Really Big One is an article by Kathryn Schulz about the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a fault line that runs seven hundred miles along the West Coast. It consists of two tectonic plates where one plate is sliding underneath another. In this case, the oceanic plate Juan de Fuca is sliding under the continental plate known as the North American plate. In her article, Schulz repeats the words of seismologists and scientists alike in the opinion that the Cascadia Subduction Zone is overdue for a magnitude 9.0 or higher earthquake and resulting tsunami. No one in the Pacific Northwest is prepared for it. With historical stories and examples from around the world Schulz warns of the damage to be done when the Really Big One finally makes itself known. In her article, Schulz uses three rhetorical appeals. These appeals are called Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, created these terms to refer specifically to the different ways they appeal to the reader. Ethos is used to establish credibility, Pathos refers to emotion, and Logos is the appeal to logic. While the article is packed full of history, science and facts, it s the appeal to emotion that really draws in the readers and instills curiosity and a desire for action. Schulz s article is split into five sections. The first section introduces the readers to Chris Goldfinger, a paleoseismologist at Oregon State University. Clinton s expertise on the topic also helps her credibility. Clinton states, Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children, and families. Her providing the amount of time she has worked with women s rights and that she has worked continuously on these issues makes her more credible. Being a woman provides enough credibility to be able to speak on the rights of women, but traveling to other countries and seeing how their women are treated contributes a proper understanding of how dire the situation truly is. I think people should know this because it s sad that in the past people had to do that for white people. For me i think the poem and the movie are at least alike. Odessa cannot do stuff in the house because the owners might get mad at her but the wife stands up for the black people for me that was a good choice because black people are people they are not toys. Odessa is related to the caged bird because she can t go to places. This supports my claim because people right now are not locked up for slaves. Over the past century, women in the United States have made progress in increasing their employment experience and skills. But despite women s gains in experience, education and skill, a 20 percent gender pay gap still exists. According to the Institute for Women s Policy Research, women make up half of the workforce today and 40 percent of women are either equal to their male counterparts or the singular breadwinners in their household (Institute for Women s Policy Research). The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap (Spring 2016). (n.d.). Retrieved September 12, 2016. Companies can do their part in closing the wage gap among men and women by changing their policies. For the wage gap to close sooner than 136 years from now, everyone needs to work together. Companies need to conduct salary examinations to monitor and address gender based pay differences. By changing the company policy women will have access to their male colleagues salaries and can determine whether the employer is being fair or not. Companies can also do their part in closing the wage gap by improving their paid sick days policies. Nearly 40 million workers in the United States do not have access to paid sick days. The amount of part time workers who do not have paid sick days is even higher at 73 percent. Because of the lack of paid sick leave, many workers in the United States must go to work sick and if their children are sick they must either send them to school sick or leave them at home alone because they fear that by missing work they will be punished or even fired (Glynn, S. • 18. Michael Porter s The Competitive Advantage Of The Inner City The essay The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City by Michael Porter, addresses the crisis of inner cities, in particular, the economic distress and how to fix it. Porter discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the inner city, and how previous efforts to improve the conditions of the city have failed. Many past efforts were guided by the desire to meet the needs of individuals but not the city as a whole, even programs that were aimed at economic development were ineffective because they treated the inner city as an isolated island (317), separated from surrounding economy which favored local small business that did not bring in outside business. Michael Porter is a renowned economist and professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School, author of 18 books and more than 125 articles with topics that range from industry competition to economic development. Porter was born in Michigan and went on to study aerospace and mechanical engineering in Princeton from where he graduated first in his class and with high honors from both the prestigious societies Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi, which he was also elected into. He is known as the c and is recognized worldwide for his take on competition and company strategy, many say that his work has redefined the thought process related to competition and economic development. Some of his most influential books include Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance and Redefining Health Care: Creating Value Based Competition On Results. In the essay, The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City, Porter explained the reason that numerous past efforts failed to improve the economic conditions of the inner city were mainly due to the increasing social investment in order to see growth in economic activity. However, in order to create real change, we have to start with the notion that inner city businesses should not only be profitable but also capable of exporting goods and services (317). Just a few short months after they had settled, Governor White hesitantly decided to return to England for much need support and goods, leaving his family and colonists behind. Unfortunately for him, the day he set sail was the last day he ever saw them. John White s decision to return to England for supplies was made at a bad time for the country. Upon his arrival Britain was facing an impending invasion by the Spanish Armada and he found himself trapped in England because of this crisis. This system is known as a bicameral legislature, and is a feature of many governments. In Canada, much of the legislative and executive power lies in the House of Commons, and by extension the Prime Minister. The Senate, however, exists in its current form primarily for the purpose of legislative review. Notwithstanding the many shortcomings of the Senate, it is an important institution that serves an essential purpose. Although it is rarely commended publicly for its accomplishments, other public servants and academics praise the Senate for the breadth and quality of its investigative and scrutiny functions in committee (Smith, 2003). In order to understand the Senate, one must distinguish the roles of the upper and lower houses. While the House of Commons serves the elective function of making or unmaking government the Senate is not a confidence chamber and thus serves a distinct, yet equally relevant role (Smith, 2003). The Senate, and bicameralism more broadly, was instituted as a constraint on government. Its justification rests on obstruction: rather than empower, it restrains government (Smith, 2003). This impediment to the unchecked power of the House of Commons justifies the preservation of the Senate as an institution. While some consider the Senate unnecessary or redundant, it is an essential element of Canadian government. However, despite its significance, it is not particularly well liked and some consider it to be the most criticized institution of government in Canada (Frank, 1988). • 41. Value By Suffering, Setting, And Dreams In John... Value by Suffering, Setting, and Dreams Possessions on your back and a dream in your head. Imagine living your day to day life without a job or a home. Going from place to place, farm to farm, just looking for your next meal. Whether you are able to put yourself in this place or not it will always have been the lives of George and Lennie. Lennie s troublemaking actions, and George s controlling trai Their struggles and those of people during the Great Depression are unfortunate, but are the fuel for Of Mice and Men s value. This book holds value historically, because of its setting and the struggles presented because of it. John Steinbeck uses thoroughly developed characters to thicken the plot of Of Mice and Men. He uses distinct features and qualities to differentiate one character from the next. The differences between characters is what creates several of the conflicts in the novella. Curley s antagonistic character toward people of large stature causes tension between himself and Lennie, instantly creating conflict. The conflicts in the plot are what makes Of Mice and Men entertaining. Lennie is not conscious of some of his actions. He does before he thinks. Attention is directed toward him, drawing the reader s attention in and making them want to know how things will be taken care of. Lennie is talking to Curley s wife about how he likes to pet soft things. She then mentions how soft her own hair is. Lennie instantly begins to pet her hair. She wants him to stop, but Lennie gets scared and covers her mouth, and later breaking her neck leading to death. Lennie s big fingers fell to stroking her hair. Don t you muss it up, she said. Lennie said Oh that s nice, and he stroked harder. Oh that s nice. ... Lennie was in a panic. His face was contorted. She screamed then, and Lennie s other hand closed over her mouth and nose (Steinbeck 45). Whether it is a serious fight, or a silly quarrel, Lennie s actions are entertaining. Because of this, Lennie gets into trouble with Curley. Not only was Lennie s size a problem for Curley, but his actions at have taken him deeper into trouble. Entertainment is often fueled by conflict, as shown in Of Mice and Men. The Great Depression was a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There Are Three Lines To Live In The Labyrinth Notwithstanding, in the same text (we could, of course, quote many others), there is also evidence of an acquaintance with the pre socratic unity of opposites (later adapted by Nicolau of Cusa to the idea of God), by means of which a straight line is potentially no different from a circular line (plus, a formulation that is also reminiscent of Zeno s Paradoxes of Motion): There are three lines too many in your labyrinth, he said at last. I know of a Greek labyrinth that is but one straight line. So many philosophers have been lost upon that line that a mere detective might be pardoned if he became lost as well. • 45. How Did The Founding Fathers Maintain Religious Freedom In... After the revolutionary war the founding fathers set out to create a new government that would be fair and just, and that the people would control. One of the first concepts they knew they wanted to have was religious freedom here in this new country. Previously when they were under British control the church of england was the only church they were allowed to go to and worship in. The church of england also had a say in the way they were governed. These two things frustrated the colonists very much and they wanted to make sure they would never have anything like that again in their newly established country. While writing the constitution the founding fathers said Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. When they said this they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first reason is that it was tyrannical and against our unalienable rights to have a religion forced upon us, one that a lot of people may not believe in, but they would still be forced to worship and participate in church activities. This would no longer be a free country if we were forced to attend a church. The second reason is the fact that having a national church would give them power to make decisions in government and be able to control the citizens the when the citizens should have absolute power over all laws being voted on and all elected representatives. The founding fathers wanted to steer clear of all possible future tyranny which is why they created this separation of church and state and freedom of religion. This was the best way to create a fair and just government for this new country they just fought for to keep. Prior to the expansion of mobile networks, agricultural producers were often unaware about prices and had to rely on information from traders and agents, the report said. Delays in obtaining this data or misinterpretation of second hand pricing information has serious consequences for agricultural producers, who may end up underselling their products, delivering too little or too much of the product, or having their products wither away, the World Bank said. The study also mentioned Cebu City where taxi drivers use mobile phones with global positioning systems to receive traffic data and dispatch information. The report added that social media, along with messages, videos and pictures sent from mobile phones, were useful tools for organizing protests and monitoring democracy and freedom. Mobile communications offer major opportunities to advance human and economic development from providing basic access to health information to making cash payments, spurring job creation, and stimulating citizen involvement in democratic processes, said World Bank vice president for sustainable development Rachel Kyte. That is, the chief good is something final. This relates well to Uncle Chris throughout the movie. Everyone was scared of him he drank, he drove fast and was quite brash. However, when he died, his nieces discovered that there was no inheritance, because he had been donating it to children with leg problems so that they didn t grow up and limp as he did. No one knew, until that moment, that he was spending his money on children that he didn t even know (aside from his nephew) so that they didn t suffer the pain that he did. Mama was always willing to do anything to make her children happy, including selling the brooch that was her mother s in order to get Katrin the dresser set that she had been eyeing for her graduation gift. When Christine told Katrin, it was Christine that was admonished Mama, again, didn t want to worry her children. Mama threatened to tell her sisters secrets rather than let her timid sister be laughed at. 4. Also in Book II, Aristotle states that to live a morally virtuous life one must avoid excess and defect. Drinking (or eating) above a certain amount destroys the health. This is proven in Uncle Chris dying of the DTs. • 48. Happiness and Moral Value Happiness and Moral Virtue In Aristotle s Nicomachaen Ethics, the principle concern is the nature of human well being. According to Aristotle, everything we do in life, we do for the sake of some good, or at least something perceived to be good (1094a1 3). When inquiring as to whether there is some good desired for its own sake, Aristotle envisioned a problem that either there is an infinite series of goods desired for the sake of something higher, in which case one s desires can never be satisfied, or there must be some highest good that is desired for its own sake and for which everything else is desired (1094a17 22). This restricted audience can limit the perception of happiness, and the use of this knowledge. Those who have serious doubts about the value of such virtuous qualities may not be convinced to adopt them. One argument against Aristotle s view of virtue as a mean state between the extremes of excess and deficiency would be social/moderate drinking of alcoholic beverages. Studies have shown that drinking only two alcoholic beverages a day can lead to alcoholism, although, one could define this behavior as acting in moderation, as one is not drinking to become intoxicated. As the alcoholism develops one may display acts of rage, violence and theft as a result of the condition. Thus, through use of moderation one displays character against moral virtue, and ultimately does not show happiness. The only way to abolish such acts is to completely relinquish alcohol, exhibiting deficiency. Through deficiency one would return to the state of character before the moderate use of alcohol, whether virtuous or not. Aristotle also claims that justice and happiness is what is good for the state, i.e. society, although society does not always act in accordance with moderation. During the flourishing Roman society, citizens would consume food in a gluttonous matter, and vomit to consume more. Though, from literature the individual citizens were conceived to be happy.
