African American wife of a doctor, is herself passing in the Drayton Hotel s rooftop garden when she
comes across Clare Kendry, a childhood friend. Clare is passing as white in her daily life with her
husband believing that she is a white woman. Although Irene does not approve of Clare s passing, and
tension exists among the characters, Irene grows to feel sympathetic for Clare and becomes closer to
her. The tension that exists between the two women is suggestive of another form of passing and
sublimated desire. Through the novel, Larsen demonstrates that passing manifests.
By developing unsteady characters, Larsen communicates how simple it is to escape one s
appreciation of themself. Clare breaks the tragic mulatto stereotype, but never has the chance to
identify to a particular race. While she passes as white, Clare still seeks comfort from her friend Irene
who is from the African American community. In Irene s mind, Clare has become a mysterious double
of herself due to their contrasting lives they lead. Irene is obsessive and envious of Clare. She destroys
her own self by psychologically ruining herself, thinking that Clare is having an affair with her
husband, Brian. While openly discussing racial passing, the book also secretly analyzes gender
passing. Irene s connection with Clare is based on desire, jealousy, and obsession. Both Clare and

Throughout Forced Founders: Indians, Debtors, Slaves, and the Making of the American Revolution
in Virginia, Woody Holton argues that the causes of the Revolutionary War are different than what
most people once concluded. Although many American s believe that George Washington and Thomas

The main problems between this group of people is their opinions about slave trade. The British
government s insistence on keeping slave trade is one of the main causes of Virginia s separation from
Great Britain (73). The merchants, of course, did not want to break ties with Britain because trading

Mark Twain combines two distinct time periods in his novel, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s
Court. Born in the 19th century, character Hank Morgan wakes up one day to find himself in the 6th
century. Morgan quickly takes advantage of his newfound place in a primeval society and establishes
power through the introduction of technology. Some critics believe that Morgan s desire for power
leads to his corruption. Two notable critics, Arthur Shattuck O Keefe and Jane Gardiner, bash Morgan
and see through his lies and make believe, asserting how the Yankee ruined his own vision of bringing
the 19th century to the 6th century. As a whole, Morgan s arrogance and hypocrisy leads to both the
growth and eventual collapse of his ideal, utopian society. Hank Morgan represents a corrupt
individual who represses opposing ideologies that go against his plans for rebuilding society. He
shows determination to get what he wants as he makes change in King Arthur s domain, not letting
any opponent stand in his way. Arthur Shattuck O Keefe takes a close look at Morgan s persistence,
causing him to believe that it drives the Yankee to the point of complete arrogance and desire for
absolute rule. O Keefe addresses Morgan s shift of power in his work, The Morally Imperative Lie in
Twain s Connecticut Yankee, stating that Hank Morgan is a malignant (if not totalitarian) authority
figure (O Keefe). It can be deduced that Morgan uses his power to the highest extent and shows no
sympathy as he passes through the various ranks in King Arthur s court. There is even a point where

Abstract Large scale, global temperature analyses and climate change models may sometimes
oversimplify or generalize smaller, regional trends. Only until a few years ago, efforts on climate
change projections for island scale has intensified for more reliable assessments of various impacts of
long term climate trends (Hamilton, 2014). Temperature changes over Hawaiʻi are expected to exceed
the current daily maximum values by the end of the 21st century (Lauer et al., 2013). Mountainous
tropical islands in the Hawaiian archipelago are showing greater warming than the lower elevations
(Giambelluca et al. 2008; Diaz et al. 2011, 2014). Observed surface air temperature trends can also be
used to test regionally downscaled climate models. The goal of this thesis is to analyze climate data to
assess possible trends that are likely to impact future management of summit ecosystems. This
research is essential to the effective protection and restoration of these fragile alpine and subalpine
ecosystems. The primary focus of this research is to expand on and update the previous analysis by
Giambelluca et al. (2008) by extending the data set from 2006 through to 2014 15 in order to: (a)
develop a revised Hawaiʻi Temperature Index to include the more recent data; (b) assess changes that

The Second Sino Japanese War (formerly addressed as the China Incident ) took place in China from
1937 until 1945. In this war, the Japanese sought out China s abundance of raw materials and land.
