This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
1. The main feature on this double page spread, and of which people will be drawn to the most,
is the main image on the second page. This particular image dominates the right hand page
due to its bright, eye catching colours which are vibrant and cheerful and go with the genre
of pop really well.
This image is represented to a reader as being the main focaliser as their use of clothing
(quirky, unique style with their own individual hairdo) instantly connotes the known theme/
genre of pop music as you would usual associate pop to be fun, bright and unique. Also their
bright, eye catching make up also symbolises this particular genre.
On the left hand page their are smaller mid shot images surrounded by text of the
individual artists from the group, The Saturdays. It is positioned in a way that each singer has
their own text box of information about them with speech bubbles contained with certain
phrases to draw the reader in. Readers can navigate easily to heir favourite singer and access
the magazine more personally. This will have a positive effect on readers as they feel that the
magazine is tailored specially for them.
There is no actual heading to suggest this is an interview page but the reader will
automatically know without a heading to prompt them. There are however linguistic devices
to pull the reader in such as their names in a large bold font. As there is no text after their
name in bold an enigma code is created as readers want to know the personal stories below.
The colour scheme is simplistic and features only two colours both of which to not clash yet
compliment each other. This feature may perhaps be aimed at an older target audience as
there is a more mature style present.
2. The image of Cher Lloyd on the second page is what most readers will be attracted to. As she is
a music star who has appeared on television and radio readers will be aware of who she is and
inspired by her. She is posing in a funny cheeky way which will make readers laugh creating a
link between star and reader. In the middle of the text there is a small mid shot of Cher Lloyd
possibly at a public event. The image helps to break up the text so the readers attention is still
kept as large chunks of text may bore the reader as they are of a young age.
The pull quote used is scandalous and intriguing as readers want to know more about why Cher
has corrupted other people minds. The pull quote ends suddenly so readers will be more
interested in what will happen. As Cher is next to her interview readers will feel as if she is talking
directly to them. “For their kids turning out wrong” is in a bright pink. The editors have chosen
to do this to make this stand out from the other groups of text again, this is another technique
to excite the audience. Blumer and Katz’s theory states that people use media for several
different reasons. In this case it will be to entertain the readers about Cher’s exciting and life and
to educate on how she changes peoples minds.
At the top there is a bright pink puff that allows the reader to understand that this is the cover
story. This creates a style and character to the magazine. Furthermore, readers will find it easier
to navigate through the magazine.
Cher’s pose, costume and makeup immediately connote what genre the magazine is. Crazy
outfits and exaggerated colours and makeup are the stereotypes of pop and we have been
presented with our conceived ideas. The reader will feel comfortable with this s they can easily
understand what they are reading. Furthermore, they expect pop to be like this and the
magazine understands what the reader wants.
