CE-01-412 DISASTER MANAGEMENT
UNIT-I
Introduction to Disasters: Concepts and definitions (Disaster, Hazard, Vulnerability, and
Resilience Risks) Disasters: Classification Causes, Impacts (including social, economic,
political, environmental, health, psychosocial etc.) Differential impacts – in terms of caste,
class, gender, age, location, disability, Global trends in disasters urban disasters, pandemics,
complex emergencies, Climate change.
UNIT-II
Approaches to Disaster Risk reduction: Disaster cycle – its analysis, Phases, culture of
safety, prevention, mitigation and preparedness, community based DRR, structural-non
structural measures, roles and responsibilities of community, Panchayati Raj
institutions/Urban local bodies (PRIs/UL Bs), states, Centre and other stake-holders.
UNIT-III
Inter-relationship between Disaster and Development: Factors affecting Vulnerabilities,
differential impacts, impact of Development projects such as dams, embankments and
changes in Land use etc. climate change adaption. Relevance of indigenous knowledge,
appropriate technology and local resources.
UNIT-IV
Disaster Risk Management in India: Hazard and vulnerability profile of India, Components
of Disaster Relief: Water, Food, Sanitation, Shelter, Health, Waste Management, Institutional
arrangements (Mitigation, Response and Preparedness, DM Act and Policy, other related
policies, plans, programmes and legislation).

c. Disaster Management Cycle
d. Role of Panchayati Raj Institutions in Disaster Risk Reduction
e. Responsibilities of Urban local bodies (PRIs/UL Bs) in Disaster Risk
Reduction
4. Differentiate between structural and non- structural measures for disaster risk
reduction.
5. What are the major roles and responsibilities of community, Panchayati Raj
Institutions, state and central stake holders to combat the disasters?
UNIT-3
1. Define vulnerability. What are the factors affecting vulnerability.
2. What are differential impacts? Discuss differential impacts of disasters in terms of
class, gender, location and disability.
3. Discuss in details the impacts of development projects on the socio-economic and
ecological settings giving reference to multi- purpose river valley projects.
4. Enumerate the relationship between disasters and development considering land use
changes as an example.
5. How are development projects related with disasters? Explain taking any
developmental activity as an example.
6. Illustrate the relevance of indigenous knowledge and local resources in disaster
management. Give some examples of the appropriate technologies used by indigenous
people for risk reduction.
7. “Adaptation is the principal way to deal with the impacts of a changing climate”.

UNIT-4
1. Draw neat sketches of hazard and vulnerability profile of India with reference to
earthquake, drought and floods.

CE-01-412 DISASTER MANAGEMENT UNIT-I Introduction to Disasters: Concepts and definitions (Disaster, Hazard, Vulnerability, and Resilience Risks) Disasters: Classification Causes, Impacts (including social, economic, political, environmental, health, psychosocial etc.) Differential impacts – in terms of caste, class, gender, age, location, disability, Global trends in disasters urban disasters, pandemics, complex emergencies, Climate change. UNIT-II Approaches to Disaster Risk reduction: Disaster cycle – its analysis, Phases, culture of safety, prevention, mitigation and preparedness, community based DRR, structural-non structural measures, roles and responsibilities of community, Panchayati Raj institutions/Urban local bodies (PRIs/UL Bs), states, Centre and other stake-holders. UNIT-III Inter-relationship between Disaster and Development: Factors affecting Vulnerabilities, differential impacts, impact of Development projects such as dams, embankments and changes in Land use etc. climate change adaption. Relevance of indigenous knowledge, appropriate technology and local resources. UNIT-IV Disaster Risk Management in India: Hazard and vulnerability profile of India, Components of Disaster Relief: Water, Food, Sanitation, Shelter, Health, Waste Management, Institutional arrangements (Mitigation, Response and Preparedness, DM Act and Policy, other related policies, plans, programmes and legislation).

Write short notes on: a. Community based Disaster Risk Reduction b. Culture of safety c. Disaster Management Cycle d. Role of Panchayati Raj Institutions in Disaster Risk Reduction e. Responsibilities of Urban local bodies (PRIs/UL Bs) in Disaster Risk Reduction 4. Differentiate between structural and non- structural measures for disaster risk reduction. 5. What are the major roles and responsibilities of community, Panchayati Raj Institutions, state and central stake holders to combat the disasters?
  • 3. UNIT-3 1. Define vulnerability. What are the factors affecting vulnerability. 2. What are differential impacts? Discuss differential impacts of disasters in terms of class, gender, location and disability. 3. Discuss in details the impacts of development projects on the socio-economic and ecological settings giving reference to multi- purpose river valley projects. 4. Enumerate the relationship between disasters and development considering land use changes as an example. 5. How are development projects related with disasters? Explain taking any developmental activity as an example. 6. Illustrate the relevance of indigenous knowledge and local resources in disaster management. Give some examples of the appropriate technologies used by indigenous people for risk reduction. 7. “Adaptation is the principal way to deal with the impacts of a changing climate”. Comment.
