Introduction
• Digestion :- It is the process of conversion of complex food
substances to simple absorbable forms. It is performed by
the digestive system which consists of alimentary canal
and digestive glands such as liver, pancreas etc.
Digestive system of man can be studied under two heads:-
1. Alimentary Canal
2. Digestive Glands
ALIMENTARY CANAL
• The Alimentary canal is a long tube of varying diameter.
It measures from 8 to 10 metres in length. It is divided
into the following parts:-
1. Mouth
2. Oral cavity
3. Pharynx
4. Oesophagus
5. Stomach
6. Small intestine
7. large intestine
Mouth:-
The first part of digestive system.
The entry point of the food.
 Structure in the mouth that aids digestion:-
 Teeth- Thecodont, diphyodont. and heterodont. They are of four types:-
Incisors- 2, cutting and biting
Canines- 1, holding, tearing, piercing
Premolars- 2, crushing and grinding
Molars- 3, Mastication
Salivary glands:- produce and secrete saliva. pH of saliva 6.7
And contains water, salts, mucin and salivary enzyme i.e, amylase and
ptyalin. Partially digested polysaccharide, neutralises acidity, lubricates
food particles .
Tongue:- large muscular, contains taste buds, helps in speech, it turns the
food into a spherical mass called Bolus.
Taste:- bitter, sour, sweet, salt, Umami
• Pharynx:- It is the cavity behind soft palate. It is small size, conical
part where food and air passage cross each other. Gullet:- the
opening of Oessophagus
Glottis:- the opening of larynx or trachea.
Oesophagus:- It is a muscular tube about 10 inches(25cm) long.
Food passes down the oesophagus by Peristaltic movement of its
muscular wall. Its opening into stomach is surrounded by a ring of
muscles (cardiac Spinchter).
Complete digestion of food in small intestine:-
• The partially digested food is absorbed by the duodenum
of the small intestine along with the digestive juices from
the liver , pancreas and its own walls.
• Bile breakdown fats into smaller globules. Trypsin acts
upon proteins and breaks them into peptides. Amylase
converts starch into simple sugar. Lipase converts fats into
fatty acids and glycerol.
• The pancreas secretes pancreatic juices which breaks down
fats into fatty acids and glycerol.
• The intestinal juice secreted breaks down starch into
simple sugars. It also converts proteins into amino acids.
Some enzymes:- Peptidases lipase
Sucrose nucleotidase, nucleosidase
• The digested food is now called Chyle.
Accessory digestive Glands
These are extrinsic glands. They secretes chemical
enzymes which helps in digestion of food.
Bilirubin, Biliverdin
Pancreas:- It is a difussed leaf
Shaped gland. It weigh about 60 gm.
It has following parts:-
1. Exocrine part:- Acini secretes alkaline
pancreatic juice with pH 8.4.It contains
enzyme pancreatic amylase or amylopsin.
2. Endocrine part:- This part consists
of Group of Islets of langerhans,
which Contains three types of cells:-
1. Alpha cells:- Glucagon hormone.
2. Beta cells:- Insulin hormone
3 Delta cells:- Somatostatin hormone.
Large intestine is wider than small intestine. It is about
1.5 to 1.8 metres long and 6cm in diameter. It is
looped outside the small intestine in the abdominal
and pelvic cavity.
It is divided into:- Caecum, Colon, Rectum.
Function of small intestine:-
1. Absorption of water from the food.
2. Secretion of mucus.
3. Egestion of undigested waste matter.
*
Absorption is the process by which the end product of digestion
pass through the intestinal mucosa into the blood or lymph. It
is carried out by passive, active or facilitated transport
mechanisms.
The villi on the inner surface intestine and the microvilli on the
free surface of epithelial cells of intestinal mucusa enhance
absorption capacity of intestine.
The incorporation of absorbed food materials into the tissue cells
is called assimilation. The absorbed food finally reach the
tissues, which utilize them for the activities.
Digested food passes onto large intestine. Large
intestine cannot absorb food but absorbs much of
the water. The remaining semi-solid waste is called
faeces and is passed into rectum.
The digestive wastes, solidified into coherent faeces
in the rectum initiate a neural reflex causing an
urge or desire for its removal. It is expelled out
through the anus.
