Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily to survive, unlike type 2 diabetes where the body may still produce some insulin. Symptoms of type 1 diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, weight loss, fatigue, and blurred vision. While the exact causes are unknown, genetics and environmental triggers are thought to play a role.
