3. Diabetes
Insipidus (DI)
A disorder of the posterior pituitary gland
characterized by a deficiency of antidiuretic
hormone (ADH) or vasopressin
Causes:
◦ Head trauma
◦ Brain tumor
◦ CNS infections
Manifestations:
◦ Polyuria: very dilute, water-like urine
◦ Polydipsia
◦ Dehydration: poor skin turgor, dry mucous membrane
◦ Weight loss

4. Diabetes Insipidus (DI)
Medical Management:
◦ADH replacement
◦Desmopressin (DDAVP), intranasal
◦Fluid replacement
◦Daily weight monitoring
Nursing Management (patient education):
◦Teach patient and family about follow-up care
◦Teach correct drug administration
◦Teach to carry medication at all times
