Benign Bone Tumors
• Slow growing; manifest few
symptoms; not a cause of death
• Osteochondroma – most common,
affecting the end of long bones (knee
or shoulder)
Malignant Bone Tumors
• Metastasis to the lungs is common.
• Osteosarcoma – most common and
most fatal
Localized, progressive pain
Limited Range Of Movement
(ROM)
Weight loss
Pathologic fracture
Diagnostic Tests
Bone x-ray - reveal the tumor
Chest x-ray - reveal lung
metastasis
Biopsy – for histologic
examination
Manifestations
Bone Tumor
Bone TUMOR
Management – the goal is to destroy or
remove the tumor
§ Radiation therapy (if tumor is
radiosensitive)
§ Chemotherapy
§ Surgery
§ Limb-salvaging/sparing – removal of
tumor and adjacent tissue to preserve

(autograft or allograft) and skin grafting
as needed to replace resected tissue
§ Amputation
