Importance of wheel in the automobile is obvious. The vehicle (car) may be towed without the engine but at the same time even that is also not possible without the wheels, the wheels along the tyre has to carry the vehicle load, provide cushioning effect and cope with the steering control. The main requirements of an automobile wheel are; it must be strong enough to perform the above functions. It should be balanced both statically as well as dynamically. It should be lightest possible so that the unsprung weight is least. The Wheel has to pass three types of tests before going into production, they are Cornering fatigue test, Radial fatigue test and Impact test. In this thesis radial fatigue analysis is done to find the number of cycles at which the wheel is going to fail. The 2D of the wheel was created in MDT, the drafting package and the same was exported to ANSYS, the finite element package using IGES translator where the 3D model of the wheel is created. The wheel is meshed using SOLID 45 element. A load of 2500N was applied on the hub area of the wheel and a pressure of 0.207N/mm2 is applied on the outer surface of the rim. The pitch circle holes are constrained in all degrees of freedom. The analysis is carried under these constraints and the results are taken to carryout for further analysis i.e. fatigue module to find the life of the wheel.

Importance of wheel in the automobile is obvious. The vehicle may be towed without the engine but at the same time even that is also not possible without the wheels, the wheels along the tire has to carry the vehicle load, provide cushioning effect and cope with the steering control. Generally wheel spokes are the supports consisting of a radial member of a wheel joining the hub to the rim. Spokes make vehicles look great but at the same time they require attention in maintenance. To perform their functions best, the spokes must be kept under the right amount of tension. If a spoke does break, the wheel generally becomes instantly unbalanced also the hub may break. The purpose of the car wheel rim provides a firm base on which to fit the tire. The motorcycle riders are subjected to extreme vibrations due to the vibrations of its engine, improper structural design of the motorcycle and the bad road conditions. So in this project the attempt has been made to reduce the vibrations of vehicle by providing springs instead of the spokes at the wheel. The springs will work as suspension members at wheels as well as they will provide proper strength that is adequate to proper operation of the wheel. The CAD model of a motor cycle will be made in solid works and later it is analyzed in ANSYS 14.5. The results of suspension of ordinary wheel rim and spring based rim will be compared.
In this research work, suitable lightweight material is found for chassis frame by analyzing chassis with different
materials like structural steel, aluminum alloy and Epoxy E-Glass UD composite materials. The selected material should have the
sufficient strength to carry the load coming on to the chassis when it is supporting the vehicle. With reduction in the weight of the
chassis, reduces the overall weight of the vehicle, which leads to the reduction in fuel. Thus, the usage of lightweight materials in
manufacturing of chassis frame has the advantages. The materials used should help in reducing the weight of the vehicle while
maintaining the necessary strength for supporting the expected load acting on the frame under various operating conditions.
ANSYS finite element software is used to analyze the performance of the chassis with different materials. The 3D model of the
chassis frame is developed by SOLIDWORKS software and numerical analysis is carried out by ANSYS. The model of the ladder
frame is developed using generic specifications. The FEM analysis was done on chassis frame for its deformation and stresses by
applying maximum load. The von-misses stresses, strain and deformations of the chassis with structural steel, aluminum alloy and
composite materials are compared. Composite materials are observed to be better with less weight with similar performance. It is
found that composite (E-glass) is more preferable material for chassis frame.

Alloy wheels are automobile wheels which are made from an alloy of aluminum or magnesium metals or sometimes a
mixture of both. Alloy wheels differ from normal steel wheels because of their lighter weight, which improves the steering
and the speed of the car. Alloy wheels will reduce the unstrung weight of a vehicle compared to one fitted with standard
steel wheels. The benefit of reduced unstrung weight is more precise steering as well as a nominal reduction in fuel
consumption.
The goal of the project is to suggest optimum geometric shape and material for alloy wheel of a four wheeler.
In the first step previous journals will be studied to understand actual problem, selection of materials, selection of
shape’s and rectification method.
In the next step parametric models will be prepared for further analysis purpose
Evaluation will be done on the model using Ansys work bench for reading results.
Polymers are presently broadly utilized as substitute material for steel gear in low
load devices. Its malfunction differs from gears made of steel, thus it is imperitive to sort
out the failures shown by polymer gears. Numerous earlier studies noted that wear
recognition, microstructure surface condition monitoring, weight loss and temperature
detection can be used in the analysis for the failure of polymer gear. The principle
objective of the current work is to conduct an analysis for failure detection methods as
defined above. Other researcher works were studied and their findings were extracted in
order to identify the methods they used. The most common method used was wear
detection and it was supplemented by other methods such as microstructure surface
condition monitoring. Failures shown by polymer can be concluded to be tooth breakage,
tooth deformation, material removal and surface fatigue.

Abstract Formula Student Racing competitions are held at various Formula SAE circuits globally. Students from different colleges worldwide thrive to build a Formula style race car to compete at these events. In lieu to the competition rules and regulations it is important to design the chassis of the car with utmost priority. The major challenge posed is to design and fabricate a light weight car without compromising on the safety of the driver. The car has to be rigidly fabricated at minimal expense. The work in this paper is based on the team NITK Racing’s Car; the DICV NR XIV. This paper showcases various methods of material selection, design optimization techniques and Finite element analysis (FEA) using ANSYS. The basic design is based on the anthropological data of the specified human (95th percentile male) allowing fast ingress and egress from the car. Following the final design selection the static structural analysis of the car was done and the consequent results have been plotted. The entire design and analysis process is based on FSAE 2013 rule book and knowledge of designing and manufacturing yesteryear’s car. The function of this car is to provide convenience to the soldiers in the civil area warzone. Unlike other
army vehicles, this car has broad tires which works well on the road. The car has four forward gears &
four reverse gears. So after firing on the target the driver has no need to waste the time in turning the
vehicle. As the differential is fixed in all other vehicles but in this project we placed a modified moving
differential. Which changes its position between the forward and the reverse gear drive shafts. Hence
provide convenience to the gear shifting. The car has chassis less construction. i.e., the body has directly
mounted on the frame of the car with the help of fasteners. The car body is made up of fiberglass, we used
the approach of clay modeling in the designing of the molds and the virtual design of the car body is
designed under Catia V5. The parts of the car has been taken from the junkyard, the flushed cleaned,
greased or oiled , fitted , modified if needed, tested and then painted and finally assembled in the vehicle.

20. After studying their properties we found that
aluminum 1060 alloy and AISI 1035 steel are best
suitable out of four materials for making wheel
hub. Their properties are as follows:
AISI 1035 Steel:

assembly gives the stability during the rotation of
wheel
Based on analysis of stress distribution ,strain ,
fatigue analysis we found that aluminum 1060
alloy is better material for the wheel hub than
AISI 1035 steel.
The factor of safety for aluminum 1060 alloy and
AISI 1035 steel are 5.4 and 3.8 respectively. It
signifies that aluminum 1060 alloy is more reliable
than AISI 1035 steel
