Contrasts of Fortunato and Montresor
Contrasts of Fortunato and Montresor Edgar Allan Poe s short stories always attract our attention by
the images of murders, terrors, madmen, and mysteries. The Cast of Amontillado is Poe s famous
short story, which presents us a cold blooded murder and two persons with personality flaws. This
essay will make a contrast between the two characters by analyzing their characteristics and their
psychological changes as the plot develops in order to understand the theme of this story. First,
Fortunato and Montresor are different on their dress, educational backgrounds and personalities. Their
dress reveals their distinct features. Fortunato dresses himself as a clown: The man wore motley. He

He is surprised to find the real Amontillado, but his astonishment does not last long. He is really
frightened by Montresor s behavior. First, he regains his consciousness completely and gives a low
moaning cry . When he finds out that Montresor intends to kill me, he is terrified and bursts out a
succession of loud and shrill screams . Fortunato is so terrified, helpless and desperate that he has a
mental breakdown and becomes insane. As for Montresor, he acts calmly from beginning to end. First,
he wants to take revenge on Fortunato and plots it carefully in order to avoid the punishment. He
knows his enemy very well, from Fortunato s interests to his weakness, so he can easily kill Fortunato.
During the process of murder, he is really calm and controlled. Step by step, he lures Fortunato to his
gloomy cellar and kills Fortunato. He works in a place filled with bones and feels no terror. He even
stops his labour just to hear Fortunato s cry with more satisfaction . Though for a brief moment [he]
hesitated, [he] trembled , he does not tremble for guilt but for the worry that Fortunato may escape.
After Montresor take the revenge successfully, he feels satisfied and pleasant. The differences on their
psychological changes create a terrified atmosphere which makes readers suffocate. In conclusion, Poe
characterizes Fortunato and Montresor as contrasts by describing their dress, educational background,
personalities and their psychological changes.

History Of Basketball Essay
History of Basketball
Who is known world wide as the inventor of basketball? His name is Dr.
James Naismith, he was born in 1861 in Almonte, Ontario. Most people wonder were a young man
would think of a game like basketball. The concept of basketball was born from his school days in the
area where he played a simple child s game known as duck on a rock outside his one room
schoolhouse. The game involved attempting to knock a quot;duck quot; off the top of a large rock by
tossing another rock at it.
Naismith went on to attend McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. In 1891

Indigenous Art And Other Manifestations Of Indigenous Culture
Indigenous Art and other manifestations of Indigenous culture were discovered during the process of
the colonization of Australia. The first Europeans to arrive in Australia made note of the cultural
artifacts they encountered. Artifacts such as weapons, drawings, sheets of bark and engravings were
collected as colonized culture and housed in scientific and natural history museums where they shared
the space with geological, plant and animal specimens. These objects were initially collected as
curiosities and as sources of information about the exotic native and places. Later they were ordered in
typological sequence to demonstrate the evolution of culture across different societies. These
manifestations of Indigenous culture were regarded as objective information about the diversity of
human culture. They were objects of the exotic worlds not seen as art, however, but as ethnographic
facts. This classification reflected contemporary socio evolutionary thinking of the time which
regarded the Indigenous as people without art. In the mid twentieth century the discourse surrounding
Indigenous Art began to change when major collections were acquired by art galleries as opposed to
ethnographic museums. These great collections of Indigenous objects, reaching back to 1770, provide
an early record of encounters between first Australians and European settlers encounters that have
irrevocably changed Indigenous societies. The Encounters exhibition at the National Museum houses

Reflective Essay On Faith And Religion
Faith and religion are an uncomfortable topic for most, a treasured topic for some, and incredibly life
changing for others. My own faith has grown immensely over the years, and it is something that has
been so integral in my growth that I cannot shy away from sharing it in abundance. God has revealed
many things to me, one of which is that when I stop living to glorify myself, and instead glorify Him
with my actions, He will bless that.
It was a Saturday night, in the middle of a cold February. The year was 2011, and I was a sophomore
in high school. My face had been painted in layers of bright blues and greys, my hair under a long,
black wig that reached to my waist. My heart was pounding, just like it did before every performance.
However, it was never stage fright. I loved the feeling of the hot, white spotlight, the hundreds of
children sitting on the edges of their seats. I cherished the feeling of excitement that welled up in my
throat as the overture swelled, the bass vibrating beneath my feet. I was in love with theater, and I
poured my heart and time into every performance we gave. This performance was no exception. I was
in a production of The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. After being cast
as the female lead The White Witch I had spent hours of dedicated preparation for the part.
The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is a beloved tale, but many do not know that it is an allegory
for the beliefs of the Christian faith. As a

The Impact Of Animals On Endangering Animals
Text A, a transcript from a British radio station, is discussing how people should be more cautious
about hurting endangered species especially dolphins appealing to environmentalist and listeners of
the radio station. Meanwhile Text B, an entry from Encyclopedia Britannica, is informing
Environmentalist and humans in general about the destruction of the environments and animals caused
by humans. Both authors use the overall purpose to attract the same audience is similar in both
articles, but the articles differ in overall diction, syntax, tone, and several other textual features. While
Text A and Text B have the same overall purpose of explaining and informing the audiences of the
impact of humans on animals, both texts have different endangered species to prove that topic. In Text
A, the author proves that animals are endangered because of humans with giving the example of
Hector Dolphins. The article provides the audience with alarming evidence that the Hector Dolphin
population is very endangered because of fishermen leaving gill nets . While this is important
example, the Hector Dolphin, provides the audience with evidence supporting main topic, this
example differentiates from Text B s example of Amphibians. The entry, Text B, gives the example of
the Amphibian population experiencing a serious reductions in conservation status because of
amphibians being particularly sensitive to climate changes. Both examples prove the problem of

Four Components Of Baddeley s Working Memory Model
People rely on incoming information and stored information to perform their everyday functions.
However, humans have a natural capacity of how much information they can attain. We are unable to
store all of our acquired information without different systems that organize our information. Working
memory is one of these systems that temporarily holds and manages information for cognitive
processing (119). Baddeley s working memory model is made up of four components that allow for
temporary information to be stored (109). The central executive directs the flow of information. It
functions more with delegating the way resources are used in cognitive tasks. The central executive
also coordinates information from the person s current environment with retrieval of their prior
information (119). The phonological loop is used to carry out rehearsed maintained verbal material. It
plays an important role in the acquisition of vocabulary, learning how to read, and comprehending
language. The visuospatial sketchpad maintains material through visualization. The visuospatial
sketchpad creates and manages our mental images. The episodic buffer is a temporary system that
connects information from long term memory to working memory. Mnemonic devices are techniques
people can use to help improve their ability to remember something. There are various types of
mnemonic devices people use to develop the associations. For example, the method of loci relies on
visualizing mental images

Aeneas Research Paper
Roman myth and mythology were merely the continuation of Greek myths and legends, with some
Roman changes to suit the needs of the times. Through ancient writers such as Livy and Dionysius of
Halicarnassus, we have uncovered the intertwined nature of Greek myths and mythology had upon the
Roman mythology story.
Aeneas as described in the Iliad was the son of Aphrodite and Anchises a cousin of the king Priam of
Troy. Aeneas was said to have the gods watch over him as he is fated not to die. During the fighting in
Troy Aeneas is wounded by Diomedes. This triggers Aphrodite to rush in to save her son, but she is
wounded and Aeneas is subsequently saved by Apollo. Likewise in Greek hero myths the hero set out
on a journey, in this case Aeneas is fated by the gods the survive and found a city, it was said that
Poseidon foresaw, Aeneas decedents ruling the Mediterranean, with Aeneas farseeing the greatness
that Rome will achieve . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Troublesome gods, journey into the underworld and founding of a city. Also a common aspect of
Aeneas and other Greek mythical heroes is the fact that one of the heroes parents is a god and the
other is a mortal in this case Aeneas s mother is Aphrodite and his father a mortal. This is a common
occurrence as many Greek heroes have a god as a parent one such well know example is Hercules
whose father was Zeus the king of the gods. Roman mythology was intertwined with Greek myths,
with many of the Roman gods influenced and accepted as Roman gods, with only their names
changed, Zeus to Jupiter Ares to Mars are two such examples. However the Roman did have some non
Greek gods. The Lares and the Penates have no such equivalent Greek god. Lares were sprits that
protected fields and hearth as well as protectors of the household. The Penates protected the

Mustard Seed Supplier In Western Canad Article Summary
Economic Journal Summary of the article The third largest mustard seed supplier in Western Canada
has experienced a shortage of crops. India is another supplier of mustard seed and rapeseed and have
increased their prices to 20%, due to the heat wave that is expected at end of October. Due to this price
increase and the low supply of seeds, companies like Kraft Heinz Co and Reckitt Benckiser, have been
forced to raise the prices of their good, smaller companies with low consumers have been most
affected by this situation. Many exporters are panic buying due to scarcity. Many businesses owners
say it s not about the price, rather supply. Canadian farmers are to blame for this as farmers sowed

They strive best in cool climates with some moisture. They need well drained, loamy and fertile soil to
grow sufficiently. These conditions make Canadian grounds a very difficult place to grow mustard.
Since we have a climate that fluctuates between seasons, the only months that we are able to host the
breeding of mustard is in the fall seasons. This time period is not enough for mustard to grow to its
maximum potential and is far from efficient. After conducting some research, I do not believe that
Canadian farmers should continue to grow mustard because it is putting a strain on the Canadian
economy. This is because farmers who are planting mustard are not receiving high rates of crop
returns due to the unfavourable climate conditions, as a result they are not able to supply the
anticipated amounts of mustard and can not earn their maximum profit. Canadian governments are
gaining a bad reputation from the mustard shortage because the demanded amount of mustard is not
being satisfied with the scarce supply of mustard. Consumers are also also upset because prices of
mustard are higher than what it was before this mustard crisis, therefore many want the product, but
are not able to afford it. Businesses are also angry because they now have to pay more for the price of
mustard and have to compete against other businesses for the supply of mustard and are losing
consumers because they are being pushed to raise the prices of their goods. Therefore, they are not
able to meet their maximum potential because mustard is at disequilibrium, since demand exceeds

Thai Teenagers
The lifestyles of the Thai teenagers have changed a lot in the past 40 50 years. For me, the technology
between in the past (1960 s) and now (as of 2017) is very distinct in its own way due to the
technological advances during the time. For this reason, I will introduce some of the aspects that
changed during 1960s to now such as communications, transportations and music.
The Technology used by Thai Teenager in communication aspect has come a long way since the past.
In the past, some communication technologies were postal messages and telegrams. The postal
message was popular during the 1960s due to how easy it was to write a message. Also, the Thai
teenagers didn t need to encrypt the message. On the other hand, telegram was also popular back in
the days, because of its speed of delivery but users had to encrypt messages to Morse code and send
the message to the staff that sent the message. Now, Thai teenagers use E mail and Social media to
communicate. E mail was invented to increase the speed of delivery and to reduce delays from
sending the physical letter (postal messages). It s now popular and used globally. Social media is very
popular too because it is a modified version of E mail. People use a lot of social media especially
Facebook which Thai teenagers use a lot to communicate and other things. Social media allows
teenagers to communicate face to face via video calling to see each other s faces in real time without
physically meeting them in real life. This is a

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Carambola
Balimbing The carambola (Averrhoa carambola) or balimbing (local name in the Philippines) has been
developed in Malaysia and Southeast Asia for a long time and is believed to have begun and
originated in Moluccas and Ceylon. In the areas of Taiwan, India, Fukien, Kuangtung and Kuangsi in
Southern China it is commonly grown. This carambola tree is fairly prominent in the Philippines,
Australia, Queensland, and respectably in a portion of the South Pacific islands especially in Guam,
Tahiti, Hawaii, Netherlands New Guinea and New Caledonia.
In particular as to its preferable soil, the carambola tree will grow faster and bear more heavily in rich
loam. It needs good drainage too because it cannot stand when flooding. Moreover, it does well on
sand, heavy clay or limestone. However, it is often chlorotic on limestone (Manda et al., 2012). ...

Climate conditions on the other hand represent a significant part of its regular changeability. In

Analysis Of The Poem Zhuang Zhou And The Butterfly
The word Daoism holds little significance to people in some areas of the world; however in China, as
well as several other countries, the word signifies an ancient religion important to the people. Daoism
relates to a set of principles that state the way one should lead their life so that one does not interfere
with the will of nature. During the Tang Era (618 907 A.D.) in China many poets were inspired by the
faiths of not only Daoism but also Confucianism as well as Buddhism. One of these famous poets was
Li Bo; Bo was known for many poems with a prominent one titled Zhuang Zhou and the Butterfly.
The poem depicts three different scenarios that are affiliated with Daoism through their ties in nature
paired with the path one must take through life to show the reader that following the path is essential
in life. In the first four lines of the poem, Zhuang Zhou dreamt that he was a butterfly and when he
awoke the butterfly became him then questioned which was real. Li Bo utilizes the dream versus
reality element to show that dreams can be vividly real while still being completely fictional.
However, applying this to lifelong fulfilled dreams can change one s reality as well as putting them on
the correct path for their life. These lines also show the relationship to Daoism by using the butterfly
that represents nature. Meanwhile the dreams versus reality element present in the first four lines also
appertains to the concept of yin and yang. Yin yang defined in the

Globalization And Cosmopolitanism By Thomas Friedman
Globalization and Cosmopolitanism In current century, it has become way easier to communicate with
one another around the world because of the advancement in technology, making it way easier for us
to know what s going on around the world from our couch with the help of the internet, which is
known as globalization. Because of globalization it has become easier to communicate with people
which is what Kwame Anthony Appiah emphasizes on making conversation and the primacy of
practice . Appiah also talks about another concept that is cosmopolitanism which means global
citizens of the world and how it may either bring people together or draw them apart from one another.
Appiah also emphasizes that making conversation doesn t necessarily mean that it would reduce
conflict, Thomas Friedman also agrees with Appiah theory, which is No two countries that are both
part of the same global supply chain will ever fight as war as long as they are each part of that supply
chain (Freidman 173). Does making conversation really solve any problem/conflict? What is
cosmopolitanism and does his concept really help apply to the world and how helpful has it been in
solving problems? Does meditating into different cultures solve any problems? After 9/11 began a
divide between us and them will that be solved? Being connected to one another does that really solve
problem much. Appiah mentions in the interview that even though we may overcome these difference

Problem With The Problem Of Evil
The Problem with the Problem of Evil
I am arguing that the Logical Problem of Evil (LPE) is not a successful argument to reject the
existence of God. This is due to the LPE arguing with an inaccurate definition for the word good .
With the correct definition of good, I will show that an all good and all powerful God can logically
exist simultaneously with evil. A response for my objection could be the Furthermore, if we allow the
inadequate use of the word evil , the LPE still does not constitute the immediate rejection of the
existence of God due to the concept of free will. A response to this objection is that individual humans
are not free and are therefore not morally responsible for their actions. However, I will show that this
response fails to disprove the existence of God.
Logical Problem of Evil In the article Evil and Omnipotence , J. L. Mackie argues his version of the
LPE. He defines evil to be concepts that good can abolish or get rid of. For the sake of this paper I
define Mackie s concept of evil as pain and suffering. In Evil and Omnipotence Good is defined to be
the taking away of pain and suffering. This definition of good and evil allows this argument to become
valid :
1. God is all powerful and all good
2. Evil exists _
3. God Doesn t exist
The above argument is valid due to the logic that an all powerful and all good God would be able to
and should eliminate all the evil in the world. However, since pain and suffering (evil)

Constraint Induced Aphasia
After the first year of aphasia resulting from stroke, researchers believe that spontaneous recovery
even with intensive therapies will be unlikely. There are few studies which have documented the
results of post stroke language functions after 12 months. Traditional language therapies also focus on
utilizing compensatory communication strategies with a focus on immediate communication needs for
each patient. Initial strategies used included gesturing, drawing, writing, and AAC systems with the
expectation that these assistive modalities will be decreased as verbal language function improves.
Scientists have begun to question if using these types of techniques could contribute to a learned non
use phenomenon. Thus, this study purposes to discover if restraining non verbal communication in
aphasia patients can result in better verbal language outcomes in the future.
Constraint induced aphasia therapy (CIAT) focuses on using intensive verbal practice with clinician
guided verbal cuing without the use of other compensatory strategies (ex: naming). Although there are
concerns that limiting communication compensatory strategies could create frustration with speaking,
it is theorized that a supportive environment and better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

I know we have had some fine preachers in our community, men who have lived their lives really

One example is Matthew 7:21 23. Not every one who says to me, Lord, Lord , will enter the kingdom

3.4 SSSC Controller
The controller for the SSSC can be isolated, generally, into two main controllers, namely internal and
external controllers. The main function of the internal controller is to give the control signal to drive
the gate pattern generator of the power converter keeping in mind to generate a fundamental output
voltage waveform with the desired magnitude and phase angle in synchronism with the ac power
system. The function of the external controller, if exists, is to alter the reference signals which decides
the practical operation of the SSSC so as to accomplish the desired system performance. The block
diagram of the SSSC controller is represented in Figure 3.13.
A measurement block is utilized to get the vital variables to be handled in the control procedure. The
computation of the infused reactance is accomplished by separating the infused voltage by the line
current (rms values). The computed infused reactance is then contrasted with the altered reference
reactance (the sum of the reference reactance

Bruno Bettelheim s The Uses Of Enchantment
Bruno Bettelheim s The Uses of Enchantment claims that fairy tales help expand the development of
children. Although more adult topics like death are never specifically talked about, they tend to deal
with other kinds of everyday problems. Children read stories like where the hero overcomes a series of
obstacles in order to achieve their happily ever after, and then find a way to connect to that. These
kinds of fairy tales help teach children understand difference between right and wrong. Fairy tales are
in a way a child s first teacher, they essentially mold the mind and help convey ideas that would
otherwise be difficult to understand at such a young age.
The loss of a parent of a story s protagonist is a common characteristic in fairy tales. Usually the story
will start out with either the father or mother passing away, although the author never mentions the
word death it is always either implied or not much detail is given. These kinds of tragic backstories
leave you feeling sympathy towards the character, which then lead the reader to root for them at all
costs. Bettelheim states that situations like this occur in order to give children, suggestions in symbolic
form about he may deal with these issues (278). Fairy tales give children a sense of peace when it
comes to coping with loss. Kids can read these stories and say something along the lines of, Hey this
character is going through something I went through, I can relate to them . Stories like Cinderella

Amistad Trial
In the 17th century, the demand for slaves was higher than it ever was at any time in history. Africans
were kidnapped from their homes and villages to be sold to whites so that they could be sold and put
to work with no income. This was the exact plan that was in store for 43 mendi africans taken on the
slave ship, The Amistad. While being transporting, the Mendi Africans took a stand and revolted
against the crew and took over the ship with a will to become free and that is when their path to
freedom began. The trial in the US and the Mendi slaves time in Connecticut were also important
events in the Amistad. The events of the Mendi Africans on the Amistad and the trial changes the lives

First they needed a place to stay. They ended up in Farmington, who welcomed them with opened
arms. The kids were split up with local families while the rest of the men stayed in a big room in one
of Farmington residents, Samuel Demings stores. They were provided with simple food from the local
families. Second, they had to make money in order to fund the trip. Farmington generously gave them
15 acres of land to farm. The Farmington families and Mendi Africans also traveled all over
connecticut for fundraising. The preparations weren t going to be instant, but they were going to take
some time to complete. With all the free time, they needed something to do. For months they studied
with teachers in Farmington, hoping that they could one day teach their villages to be literate. They
were also taught in religion. The first church of christ, located in Farmington, had a vision that the
Africans could become missionaries in their villages and communities. They went to church every
sunday and were taught daily. They also had to have some fun. They liked to do activities with each
other, particularly gymnastics and swimming in the river. But it wasn t all positive in Farmington
though. One day the teacher made careless remarks that the Africans would probably never go home.
This depressed all the Africans, particularly one named For One. On a saturday shortly after the
remarks, he said that he was going to swim, and there he drowned himself. Shocked by what
happened, Farmington and the Africans sped up the final preparations before they left. Nearly a month
after the suicide, a group of young whites physically attacked a couple of the africans when they came
out of a store. Lucky for the africans, cinque came to the rescue and fought them off. Now they were
really rushed to leave farmington. Days before they left, four churches in the area came together for a

BACKGROUND
The United States has a quite different educational system than China. In China, there is not
something like GMAT or GRE in the process of application. After the students pass the national exams
for English politics and math, they will need to go through the major course test of the university in
which they applied. Chinese students can just apply for one university s master degree in the end of
their senior year. However, if international students want to apply for master degrees in the United
States, they need to start in the end of their junior year. In addition, there are also many additional
requirements for international students in the admission process. As a result, most international

Most importantly it leaves them with very little reaction time. So in the initial phase not much
competition is faced.
Good will among early customers
Happy at having struck a profitable deal the customers are ready to come back to the manufacturer in
future. This goodwill created also leads to further promotion of the product through word of mouth .
Cost efficiency
The emphasis on keeping the price low helps in controlling the cost thereby cost efficiency is
achieved.
Competitors are kept at bay
If a manufacturer adopts penetration pricing and lowers the price of his products or services he may
stop competitors from entering the market. This happens because now the competitors will have to
enter the market at lower than existing prices. This reduces their profit not to mention the risk they
face as new entrants in acquiring market share.
Channel benefit
As this technique creates a quick turnover it keeps its retailers and distributers happy.
Disadvantages of predatory pricing The customer expects the prices to remain low for a long term.
They are not ready for the subsequent rise in the price and when it happens they might switch to a
competitor s product. Thus subsequent price hike leads to loss of market share

Argumentative Essay On Yoga
Yoga has been associated with stress. The larger the amount of stress a person has, the less likely that
person is to feel in control of themselves and their surroundings. Yoga has also been linked to a person
s health and wellbeing. During a one week experiment, a researcher did yoga once a day at 7:00 pm
for a half hour. A survey was taken twice, in hour intervals, after the yoga session was completed, at
8:30 pm and 9:30 pm. The surveys are what was used to find the data that created the results of the
experiment. One type of yoga, integrated yoga, was used throughout the week. The results concluded
yoga helps relieve stress for one hour after the session was completed, but was stressed again shortly
after that hour was finished. Different styles of yoga classes could be offered and more times could be
made available at the Elmen Center. Yoga is currently offered at 4:30 pm in the Back Alley, but more
class times could be 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm. Different styles include hot yoga, iyengar yoga, or hatha
yoga. To improve evaluations, a person could add questions about their level of stress before and after
the yoga class. These improvements will allow researchers to see if the results are true for the majority
of people.

An Interview On Social Work
As social workers we are required to know the Council on Social Work Education s core competencies
and practice behaviors. We are advised to not discriminate against religion, races, sexual orientation
and gender. Before the course diversity I never had to think about my own race for example white
privilege. Within this class I put aside every bias I had so that could grasp the concepts without my
negative input. Throughout this course my knowledge about the different minorities has transformed
how I perceive race and ethnicity.
Conducting an interview was a great way for me to assess the individual to ask relevant and effective
questions to understand her life and the hardships she may have encountered. After this experience I
self reflected on my life and started to compare the difference in our experiences throughout our lives.
Before I conducted this interview I expected that every person in the minority group has experienced
extreme levels of oppression. I came to understand that people have different experiences so there are
different levels to oppression. My interviewee is not a citizen of the U.S and has been one of the
hardest barriers for her. This restricts her from being respected by the people in our community and
obtaining a government job. Although she has this restriction every other aspect in her life has been a
normal childhood. Normal meaning, children trying to figure out their purpose and who they want to

The Sociological Causes Of The Gay Marriage Culture Change
The Sociological Causes of the Gay Marriage Culture Change
Societies evolve. Nothing better illustrates this fact than America s rapid surge of acceptance towards
same sex marriage during the early twenty first century. A 2017 Pew Research study found that nearly
30% of Americans changed their minds on gay marriage less than two decades. In 2001, a mere 35%
of Americans supported same sex marriages a number that skyrocketed to 62% in 2017 (Pew Research
Center, 2017). This is a statistical anomaly. Americans have never changed their minds on an issue so
quickly. In fact, it took several decades to legalize interracial marriage, which was left up to the states
until 1967 (Tribou Collins, 2016). Given the large shift in the population s ... Show more content on

Literature Review
Contact Theory History is stained with groups of people hating other groups of people be it people of
a different race, religion, sexuality, or nationality. Such intolerance towards people of a different walk
of life can manifest itself in a nation s laws and political climate. How can society fix the problem of
groups hating other groups? In the 1950 s, psychologists claimed that the answer to this highly
complicated problem is surprisingly simple: have the two different groups interact with one another.
After all, it is easy to harbor resentment towards groups when they are painted in a negative light or
stereotyped. It is more difficult to dislike individuals, however.
In 1954, psychologist G.W. Allport claimed just that under the right circumstances, exposure to a
group decreases negative sentiments towards them. Dr. Thomas Pettigrew with the University of
California, Santa Cruz, enumerates these prerequisites: The situation must allow equal group status
within the situation, common goals, intergroup cooperation, and authority support (1998).
Nevertheless, contact alone is not always enough to understand a person as an individual as opposed
to a member of a group. In the words of Pettigrew, Your stereotypes about the other group

Auditors and Sampling Techniques
1) Describe the conditions under which an auditor might choose to select a sampling technique, either
statistical or non statistical, over a non sampling technique and vice versa. Include examples from both
tests of controls and tests of balances.
a) Testing of Controls:
i) When sampling is appropriate and why?
Although there is an option not to generate a sample to test if the control is working effectively or not,
it is rarely the case. For most controls being tested, it would be too costly and ineffective to test all the
transactions to ensure that the control is working effectively. As a result, an auditor will need to
determine the number of transactions to test, which transaction to actually test, and what test will need
to be ran.
Throughout the testing that is being conduct, the auditor will have a determined tolerable deviation
(error) rate. During or after the testing has been conducted, the auditor has to compare the maximum
deviation rate to their tolerable deviation rate. As a result, if the maximum deviation rate is lower or
equal to the tolerable deviation rate, the auditor can conclude that the control is working effectively. In
addition, the auditor will want to use a sampling method to ensure that the control is working
effectively. If, at any time, the maximum deviation rate was high than the tolerable deviation rate, the
auditor will have to decide if the testing should be concluded with an ineffective control or the
sampling size should be increased.

Examples Of Foolishness In The Odyssey
In Homer s epic poem The Odyssey, the protagonist Odysseus is a mixture of twists and turns.
Undoubtedly, he displays tremendous cleverness. In fact, his unmatched shrewdness often results in an
unwise or foolish outcome. The poem encourages the reader to give up black and white conclusions
about the protagonist. In fact, categorizing acts of courage and foolishness is a difficult task in The
Odyssey. Odysseus adventures reveal a multifaceted character comprised of wisdom and foolishness.
At the beginning of the poem, the goddess Athena encourages Zeus, the king of the gods, to offer
Odysseus special treatment. Zeus is more than amenable to reward Odysseus cleverness and
commitment. After all, Odysseus did design the Trojan horse plan that led to the Greeks victory. The
triumph was the precursor to all of the happenings of The Odyssey and a clear example of
unconventional intelligence. Another illustration of his resourcefulness is his strategy to pierce
Polyphemus eye while he is sleeping. Upon arousal the one eyed monster asks who stabbed him and
Odysseus replies cunningly that it is he or Nobody that did the evil deed. Polyphemus beseeches his
friends to help him, Nobody, friends. Nobody s killing me now by fraud and not by force. (BOOK9)

The Oversexualization Of Women In Japanese Anime And Manga
WMST/PHIL 346
The Oversexualizing of
Women in Japanese Anime and Manga The Japanese are a very creative culture which have produced
several fantastic science fiction movies such as Gojira, which was an allegory for the use of atomic
bombs in war to the animated cartoons, known as anime in America, like Space Battleship Yamato
which portrayed the story of all the nations of the planet Earth joining forces to defeat an alien
invasion. Yamato and other anime like Mach A Go Go had female characters in the shows that were
both allies and sometimes love interest to the main characters, but still were depicted as strong female
role models and were drawn with normal features and body types. However, as time has passed,
women in anime have been more and more sexualized and this has had an effect on how young people
look at Japanese culture and women in particular. In this paper, the effects of this practice will be
observed. With the anime boom of the last few years, the way women have been portrayed in these
animated cartoons has been more and more sexualized. Shows such as Fairy Tale depict the female
leads as scantily clad fighters with rather large breast. Even the youngest girl on the show that is
around the age of 11 to 12 is depicted with larger than normal breast. One of the main reasons for this
is the rather strong patriarchal view of women in Japan that is still there to this day. The article titled A

Analysis Of Dalton Conley s You May Ask Yourself
Dalton Conley s book, You May Ask Yourself, defines sociological imagination as, The ability to
connect the most basic, intimate aspects of an individual s life to seemingly impersonal and remote
historical forces (Conley 2015, pg. A 11). Sociological Imagination is the idea of being able to step
outside of the box, and evaluate society from an alternative point of view. Symbolic Interactionism,
norms, socialization, and the idea of understanding yourself vs. understanding the social aspect of
society, are some of the key concepts mentioned throughout this paper, to help break apart what the
sociological imagination consists of. Society is changing a lot, and change can sometimes make it hard
to cope with the world around us. Sociological imagination is a lot deeper than just common sense.
Author of The Sociological Imagination, C. Wright Mills states, Talking about sociological
imagination is what makes us feel more grounded in the face of all these changes (C. Wright Mills). If
I keep an open mind, and pay attention to the larger world around me, I am better to understand the
connections of what is going on in my individual life, and what is going on in the social world. The
sociological imagination has two lenses to it, the individual lens, and the society lens. The individual
lens deals with personal troubles; Individuals comparing themselves to everyone around them. For
example, with the media, we see all these commercials, and ads that portray false

Persuasive Essay On Police Brutality
When it comes to minorities, the United States has been through a lot. Situations that essentially
divide the country. Some of these situations include slavery, segregation, fighting for equal rights, and
even now in the twenty first century we re divine based on whether we should kneel or stand. All
across the nation there are conversations surrounding the protesting of police brutality specially
against black citizens that typically ends up in severe brutality or in most cases murder. As of October
13, 977 innocent minorities were murdered due to police brutality. Some call into question whether or
not this protest is strictly about the protest of police behavior or if it s a blatant disrespect towards our
country as a whole.
While the National Anthem is being played, athletes all over the sports world are taking a knee in
order to bring awareness to the racial inequality and police brutality to minorities. This protest was

This title alone may cause individuals to be over looked for jobs they are qualified for. To help solve
this problem he suggests something called Second Chance Legislation. Based on the nature of the
crime, evidence supports that if an individual has not reoffended or recommitted a crime, enough time
has passed for an individual to learn from there mistake and if they have not commit a crime will not
due so. Heroux suggests expunging their criminal record as if it never happened at all. There are other
things to consider when discussing recidivism. Yes, it s important to note how the issue can be solved,
but it s also important to note why it is happening so often.
Many individuals who have been incarcerated face an addiction, or a mental health issue this addition
could be to intoxicants such as drugs and alcohol, but as mentioned it could also be a mental health
issue. These individuals face stigmas in the community and as a result may not receive the treatment
they need due to embarrassment and shame. As a result of going untreated individuals may turn to
crime time and time again to cope and handle their illness and

Benefits Of Asthma
It s scary to think that working out could bring on an asthma attack, but the asthma patients should
exercise in asthma. Asthma makes it hard to breathe, so it s not surprising that many people think it s
wise to skip physical activities that lead to being out of breath in order to avoid the constricting
airflow of an asthma attack. But that also means missing out on the major benefits of exercise,
including getting better control of asthma.
In addition to helping improve your asthma control, the short and long term benefits of exercise
include boosting your mood, improving your balance, strengthening your bones, and lowering your
risk of cardiovascular disease.
That doesn t mean you should launch into an intense workout routine, especially

The Importance Of Teaching For The Success Of The Team And...
Coaching has become more than just instructions, the expectations of creating leaders is now just as
important as performance. The education that goes into shaping coaches today takes creativity and
new technology to stay current with the ever changing landscape of sports.
The importance of educating coaches is vital to the success of the team and the athletes involved.
Having a strong foundation to build the team on starts with a coach who has taken the time to learn
about all the resources available to have more tools to teach. Everyone has a role to play in achieving
a successful team. Establishing an information flow that starts at the top, and reaches the bottom will
be the key in providing an educational environment. This information flow only works if the
information flows back up. It takes a certain type of person to inspire and motivate a group of
professionals. One needs to learn how to follow to become a great leader. Translating information to
function is a talent not everyone can do, that is why there are just a handful of hall of fame coaches.
There are several methods that will improve the education in coaching. There are three topics that will
give the best opportunity to have a greater impact on the improvement for not just the coach, but the
athletes who play a game they love. The first crucial aspect in improving coaching is knowing what
the future has in store for changes within society, identities of coaches along with athletes, and the

Side Effects Of Vegetarianism
Have you ever thought about going on a vegetarian diet? Well you might want to think again. So many
people have different views on this topic. Physicians can argue forever between the pros and cons a
vegetarian diet can have on a person. Vegetarianism isn t necessarily bad for you, but others
completely disagree. Are vegetarian diets as healthy as everyone claims? Vegetarians usually believe
that their diets are very clean and have a great impact on the well being of their life, while others claim
that the diet is completely harmful to your well being. The following will explain the beneficial side
effects and the harmful side effects of vegetarianism. Vegetarian diets are considered one of the most
healthiest diets. Physicians recommend a vegan diet for better overall health. One of the reasons why
is because vegetarians usually live longer than meat eaters. According to the article, Physicians
Committee for Responsible Medicine, a vegetarian diet is lower in saturated fats. (Physicians
Committee, 1) Lower saturated fats in a diet aid to a healthy heart, resulting in a generally longer life
span. There are different types of proteins. Plants and animals, when consumed, each supply us with
different proteins. Replacing animal protein with plant protein lowers blood cholesterol levels. From
the Physicians committee article, a study shown that adding meat to a vegetarian diet raises blood
pressure rapidly and significantly. (Physicians Committee, 1). This information

Electric Motors And The Future Of Electric Motors
Flick the switch and the lights usually comes on. This involves a but ton of electricity. Our past
ancestors would love to have these electric motors that we have today. You will find these motors from
everything to electric trains and remote controlled cars. As an example we will use a computer. They
usually have two but the biggest ones can have up to 12. They usually are used from the fan to cool it
down and the hard drive. These motors are in everything we use these days. From the fans we use to
the hair dryers to dry our hair. Without these we would still have horses and buggies. It s sad that we
use these things everyday and take them for granted. These little motors have six parts: Armature or
rotor, commutator, brushes, axle, field magnet, and DC power supply of some sort. Most electric
motors operate through the interaction between an electric motor s magnetic field and winding
currents to generate force. In certain applications, such as in regenerative braking with traction motors
in the transportation industry, electric motors can also be used in reverse as generators to convert
mechanical energy into electric power. Found in applications as diverse as industrial fans, blowers and
pumps, machine tools, household appliances, power tools, and disk drives, electric motors can be
powered by direct current sources, such as from batteries, motor vehicles or rectifiers, or by
alternating current sources, such as from the power grid, inverters or generators. Small motors may be
found in electric watches. General purpose motors with highly standardized dimensions and
characteristics provide convenient mechanical power for industrial use. The largest of electric motors
are used for ship propulsion, pipeline compression and pumped storage applications with ratings
reaching 100 megawatts. Electric motors may be classified by electric power source type, internal
construction, application, type of motion output, and so on. Thomas Davenport developed the first real
electric motor although Joseph Henry and Michael Faraday created early motion devices using
electromagnetic fields. The early motor created spinning disks or levers that rocked back and forth.
These devices could not do any work for humankind but were

Ida B. Wells Barnett
During the American Progressive Era, generally regarded as the late 1800s and early 1900s, many
ideals were changing among the American people. During this period, which closely followed the end
of the civil war, there was an especially great amount of change in what was considered an appropriate
way of conducting oneself, especially if one happened to be a black woman. Ida B. Wells Barnett, an
African American activist who was particularly outspoken on the inhumanity and barbarism of public
lynching, can be used as an excellent primary source exemplifying how black women in the
progressive era felt that they were expected to be presented. As well as identifying the roles and
visions of women in this period, Ida B. Wells Barnett is an example of a women who broke many
barriers, exceeding the limitations put on her by the social constructs of her race and gender.
During this period in American history there were strong views held by the majority of society about
how black women were supposed to conduct themselves. There was a strong patriarchal dominance
over black women, with the subordinance of women being greatly influenced by the remnants of
slavery. Since men were so fiercely controlled during slavery, often not allowed much contact with
their families, and very strict regulations surrounding their sexual relationships with their wives, much
of the masculinity of the men seemed to be stripped away by their masters. After being freed, many
black men felt the need to

How Does Mayella Ewell Get Power
Power can be obtained in a ot of different ways, however, in history there are 3 main ways to get
power. Which is race, social class, and gender. The book To Kill A Mockingbird author Harper Lee
wrote about power. One time is when Mayella Ewell accuses a man for raping her. Mayella doesn t
have power in matters of social class and her gender, but she does have power due to the fact the she is
white. Mayella Ewell does not have power because she is from a low class family that lives on
welfare. Maycomb s Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump. In what was once a negro cabin.
(Lee 17). The Ewells weren t a rich family, and they lived in a bad environment. Due to this they
weren t respected. Atticus made a note stating that Okay we ll

Advantages And Disadvantages Of NMR Spectroscopy
NMR spectroscopy is a powerful analytical tool used for studying both structural and chemical
information about the sample. When it is implemented for metabolomics studies NMR provides
several advantages. Firstly, NMR based metabolic profiling can be highly quantitative and
reproducible. This is extremely helpful when multivariate analysis are usually performed in
metabolomic analysis (Nicholson and Wilson 1989). Furthermore, NMR sensitivity is hardly affected
by metabolite pKa or hydrophobicity, which suggests that NMR is an excellent choice for samples in
different conditions (Pan and Raftery 2007). In many metabolomics studies, e.g. milk (Lu, Antunes
Fernandes et al. 2013), human serum (Trygg, Gullberg et al. 2005), NMR performed successfully ...

Several studies determining the metabolites compounds use solvent extraction before performing GC
MS (Saleem, Bouatra et al. 2013). In these studies, two sequential derivatization steps, a protection
step using methoxyamine hydrochloride(methoxyamine HCl )(shown in Figure 4), and a subsequent
silylation step (shown in Figure 5 and 6) using N methyl trimethylsilyltrifluoroacetamide (MSTFA),
are employed. Methoximiation step converts carbonyl groups into methoximes (R=N O CH3) which is
performed to inhibit ring formation of reducing sugars by protecting aldehyde and ketone

Step by step, he lures Fortunato to his gloomy cellar and kills Fortunato. He works in a place filled with bones and feels no terror. He even stops his labour just to hear Fortunato s cry with more satisfaction . • 3. History Of Basketball Essay History of Basketball Who is known world wide as the inventor of basketball? His name is Dr. James Naismith, he was born in 1861 in Almonte, Ontario. Most people wonder were a young man would think of a game like basketball. The concept of basketball was born from his school days in the area where he played a simple child s game known as duck on a rock outside his one room schoolhouse. The game involved attempting to knock a quot;duck quot; off the top of a large rock by tossing another rock at it. Naismith went on to attend McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. • 4. Indigenous Art And Other Manifestations Of Indigenous Culture Indigenous Art and other manifestations of Indigenous culture were discovered during the process of the colonization of Australia. The first Europeans to arrive in Australia made note of the cultural artifacts they encountered. Artifacts such as weapons, drawings, sheets of bark and engravings were collected as colonized culture and housed in scientific and natural history museums where they shared the space with geological, plant and animal specimens. These objects were initially collected as curiosities and as sources of information about the exotic native and places. Later they were ordered in typological sequence to demonstrate the evolution of culture across different societies. These manifestations of Indigenous culture were regarded as objective information about the diversity of human culture. They were objects of the exotic worlds not seen as art, however, but as ethnographic facts. This classification reflected contemporary socio evolutionary thinking of the time which regarded the Indigenous as people without art. In the mid twentieth century the discourse surrounding Indigenous Art began to change when major collections were acquired by art galleries as opposed to ethnographic museums. These great collections of Indigenous objects, reaching back to 1770, provide an early record of encounters between first Australians and European settlers encounters that have irrevocably changed Indigenous societies. • 5. Reflective Essay On Faith And Religion Faith and religion are an uncomfortable topic for most, a treasured topic for some, and incredibly life changing for others. My own faith has grown immensely over the years, and it is something that has been so integral in my growth that I cannot shy away from sharing it in abundance. God has revealed many things to me, one of which is that when I stop living to glorify myself, and instead glorify Him with my actions, He will bless that. It was a Saturday night, in the middle of a cold February. The year was 2011, and I was a sophomore in high school. My face had been painted in layers of bright blues and greys, my hair under a long, black wig that reached to my waist. My heart was pounding, just like it did before every performance. However, it was never stage fright. I loved the feeling of the hot, white spotlight, the hundreds of children sitting on the edges of their seats. I cherished the feeling of excitement that welled up in my throat as the overture swelled, the bass vibrating beneath my feet. I was in love with theater, and I poured my heart and time into every performance we gave. This performance was no exception. I was in a production of The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. After being cast as the female lead The White Witch I had spent hours of dedicated preparation for the part. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is a beloved tale, but many do not know that it is an allegory for the beliefs of the Christian faith. As a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Text A, the author proves that animals are endangered because of humans with giving the example of Hector Dolphins. The article provides the audience with alarming evidence that the Hector Dolphin population is very endangered because of fishermen leaving gill nets . While this is important example, the Hector Dolphin, provides the audience with evidence supporting main topic, this example differentiates from Text B s example of Amphibians. • 7. Four Components Of Baddeley s Working Memory Model People rely on incoming information and stored information to perform their everyday functions. However, humans have a natural capacity of how much information they can attain. We are unable to store all of our acquired information without different systems that organize our information. Working memory is one of these systems that temporarily holds and manages information for cognitive processing (119). Baddeley s working memory model is made up of four components that allow for temporary information to be stored (109). The central executive directs the flow of information. It functions more with delegating the way resources are used in cognitive tasks. The central executive also coordinates information from the person s current environment with retrieval of their prior information (119). The phonological loop is used to carry out rehearsed maintained verbal material. It plays an important role in the acquisition of vocabulary, learning how to read, and comprehending language. The visuospatial sketchpad maintains material through visualization. The visuospatial sketchpad creates and manages our mental images. The episodic buffer is a temporary system that connects information from long term memory to working memory. Through ancient writers such as Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus, we have uncovered the intertwined nature of Greek myths and mythology had upon the Roman mythology story. Aeneas as described in the Iliad was the son of Aphrodite and Anchises a cousin of the king Priam of Troy. Aeneas was said to have the gods watch over him as he is fated not to die. During the fighting in Troy Aeneas is wounded by Diomedes. This triggers Aphrodite to rush in to save her son, but she is wounded and Aeneas is subsequently saved by Apollo. India is another supplier of mustard seed and rapeseed and have increased their prices to 20%, due to the heat wave that is expected at end of October. Due to this price increase and the low supply of seeds, companies like Kraft Heinz Co and Reckitt Benckiser, have been forced to raise the prices of their good, smaller companies with low consumers have been most affected by this situation. They need well drained, loamy and fertile soil to grow sufficiently. These conditions make Canadian grounds a very difficult place to grow mustard. Since we have a climate that fluctuates between seasons, the only months that we are able to host the breeding of mustard is in the fall seasons. This time period is not enough for mustard to grow to its maximum potential and is far from efficient. After conducting some research, I do not believe that Canadian farmers should continue to grow mustard because it is putting a strain on the Canadian economy. This is because farmers who are planting mustard are not receiving high rates of crop returns due to the unfavourable climate conditions, as a result they are not able to supply the anticipated amounts of mustard and can not earn their maximum profit. Canadian governments are gaining a bad reputation from the mustard shortage because the demanded amount of mustard is not being satisfied with the scarce supply of mustard. Consumers are also also upset because prices of mustard are higher than what it was before this mustard crisis, therefore many want the product, but are not able to afford it. Businesses are also angry because they now have to pay more for the price of mustard and have to compete against other businesses for the supply of mustard and are losing consumers because they are being pushed to raise the prices of their goods. Therefore, they are not able to meet their maximum potential because mustard is at disequilibrium, since demand exceeds ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The postal message was popular during the 1960s due to how easy it was to write a message. Also, the Thai teenagers didn t need to encrypt the message. On the other hand, telegram was also popular back in the days, because of its speed of delivery but users had to encrypt messages to Morse code and send the message to the staff that sent the message. Now, Thai teenagers use E mail and Social media to communicate. E mail was invented to increase the speed of delivery and to reduce delays from sending the physical letter (postal messages). • 15. Analysis Of The Poem Zhuang Zhou And The Butterfly The word Daoism holds little significance to people in some areas of the world; however in China, as well as several other countries, the word signifies an ancient religion important to the people. Daoism relates to a set of principles that state the way one should lead their life so that one does not interfere with the will of nature. During the Tang Era (618 907 A.D.) in China many poets were inspired by the faiths of not only Daoism but also Confucianism as well as Buddhism. One of these famous poets was Li Bo; Bo was known for many poems with a prominent one titled Zhuang Zhou and the Butterfly. The poem depicts three different scenarios that are affiliated with Daoism through their ties in nature paired with the path one must take through life to show the reader that following the path is essential in life. In the first four lines of the poem, Zhuang Zhou dreamt that he was a butterfly and when he awoke the butterfly became him then questioned which was real. Li Bo utilizes the dream versus reality element to show that dreams can be vividly real while still being completely fictional. However, applying this to lifelong fulfilled dreams can change one s reality as well as putting them on the correct path for their life. These lines also show the relationship to Daoism by using the butterfly that represents nature. Meanwhile the dreams versus reality element present in the first four lines also appertains to the concept of yin and yang. Yin yang defined in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Globalization And Cosmopolitanism By Thomas Friedman Globalization and Cosmopolitanism In current century, it has become way easier to communicate with one another around the world because of the advancement in technology, making it way easier for us to know what s going on around the world from our couch with the help of the internet, which is known as globalization. Because of globalization it has become easier to communicate with people which is what Kwame Anthony Appiah emphasizes on making conversation and the primacy of practice . Appiah also talks about another concept that is cosmopolitanism which means global citizens of the world and how it may either bring people together or draw them apart from one another. Appiah also emphasizes that making conversation doesn t necessarily mean that it would reduce conflict, Thomas Friedman also agrees with Appiah theory, which is No two countries that are both part of the same global supply chain will ever fight as war as long as they are each part of that supply chain (Freidman 173). Does making conversation really solve any problem/conflict? What is cosmopolitanism and does his concept really help apply to the world and how helpful has it been in solving problems? Does meditating into different cultures solve any problems? After 9/11 began a divide between us and them will that be solved? Being connected to one another does that really solve problem much. • 17. Problem With The Problem Of Evil The Problem with the Problem of Evil I am arguing that the Logical Problem of Evil (LPE) is not a successful argument to reject the existence of God. This is due to the LPE arguing with an inaccurate definition for the word good . With the correct definition of good, I will show that an all good and all powerful God can logically exist simultaneously with evil. A response for my objection could be the Furthermore, if we allow the inadequate use of the word evil , the LPE still does not constitute the immediate rejection of the existence of God due to the concept of free will. A response to this objection is that individual humans are not free and are therefore not morally responsible for their actions. However, I will show that this response fails to disprove the existence of God. Logical Problem of Evil In the article Evil and Omnipotence , J. L. Mackie argues his version of the LPE. He defines evil to be concepts that good can abolish or get rid of. For the sake of this paper I define Mackie s concept of evil as pain and suffering. In Evil and Omnipotence Good is defined to be the taking away of pain and suffering. This definition of good and evil allows this argument to become valid : 1. God is all powerful and all good 2. Evil exists _ 3. God Doesn t exist The above argument is valid due to the logic that an all powerful and all good God would be able to and should eliminate all the evil in the world. There are few studies which have documented the results of post stroke language functions after 12 months. Traditional language therapies also focus on utilizing compensatory communication strategies with a focus on immediate communication needs for each patient. Initial strategies used included gesturing, drawing, writing, and AAC systems with the expectation that these assistive modalities will be decreased as verbal language function improves. Scientists have begun to question if using these types of techniques could contribute to a learned non use phenomenon. Thus, this study purposes to discover if restraining non verbal communication in aphasia patients can result in better verbal language outcomes in the future. Fig.3.11 Schematic diagram of switching logic for single phase three level SPWM converter (u is the input signal for the corresponding block, not the global signal) 3.4 SSSC Controller The controller for the SSSC can be isolated, generally, into two main controllers, namely internal and external controllers. The main function of the internal controller is to give the control signal to drive the gate pattern generator of the power converter keeping in mind to generate a fundamental output voltage waveform with the desired magnitude and phase angle in synchronism with the ac power system. The function of the external controller, if exists, is to alter the reference signals which decides the practical operation of the SSSC so as to accomplish the desired system performance. The block diagram of the SSSC controller is represented in Figure 3.13. A measurement block is utilized to get the vital variables to be handled in the control procedure. The computation of the infused reactance is accomplished by separating the infused voltage by the line current (rms values). The computed infused reactance is then contrasted with the altered reference reactance (the sum of the reference reactance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Bruno Bettelheim s The Uses Of Enchantment Bruno Bettelheim s The Uses of Enchantment claims that fairy tales help expand the development of children. Although more adult topics like death are never specifically talked about, they tend to deal with other kinds of everyday problems. Children read stories like where the hero overcomes a series of obstacles in order to achieve their happily ever after, and then find a way to connect to that. These kinds of fairy tales help teach children understand difference between right and wrong. Fairy tales are in a way a child s first teacher, they essentially mold the mind and help convey ideas that would otherwise be difficult to understand at such a young age. The loss of a parent of a story s protagonist is a common characteristic in fairy tales. Usually the story will start out with either the father or mother passing away, although the author never mentions the word death it is always either implied or not much detail is given. These kinds of tragic backstories leave you feeling sympathy towards the character, which then lead the reader to root for them at all costs. Bettelheim states that situations like this occur in order to give children, suggestions in symbolic form about he may deal with these issues (278). Fairy tales give children a sense of peace when it comes to coping with loss. Kids can read these stories and say something along the lines of, Hey this character is going through something I went through, I can relate to them . Stories like Cinderella make ... Cost efficiency The emphasis on keeping the price low helps in controlling the cost thereby cost efficiency is achieved. Competitors are kept at bay If a manufacturer adopts penetration pricing and lowers the price of his products or services he may stop competitors from entering the market. This happens because now the competitors will have to enter the market at lower than existing prices. This reduces their profit not to mention the risk they face as new entrants in acquiring market share. In 2001, a mere 35% of Americans supported same sex marriages a number that skyrocketed to 62% in 2017 (Pew Research Center, 2017). This is a statistical anomaly. Literature Review Contact Theory History is stained with groups of people hating other groups of people be it people of a different race, religion, sexuality, or nationality. Such intolerance towards people of a different walk of life can manifest itself in a nation s laws and political climate. How can society fix the problem of groups hating other groups? In the 1950 s, psychologists claimed that the answer to this highly complicated problem is surprisingly simple: have the two different groups interact with one another. After all, it is easy to harbor resentment towards groups when they are painted in a negative light or stereotyped. It is more difficult to dislike individuals, however. In 1954, psychologist G.W. Allport claimed just that under the right circumstances, exposure to a group decreases negative sentiments towards them. Dr. Thomas Pettigrew with the University of California, Santa Cruz, enumerates these prerequisites: The situation must allow equal group status within the situation, common goals, intergroup cooperation, and authority support (1998). Nevertheless, contact alone is not always enough to understand a person as an individual as opposed to a member of a group. In the words of Pettigrew, Your stereotypes about the other group ... Include examples from both tests of controls and tests of balances. a) Testing of Controls: i) When sampling is appropriate and why? Although there is an option not to generate a sample to test if the control is working effectively or not, it is rarely the case. For most controls being tested, it would be too costly and ineffective to test all the transactions to ensure that the control is working effectively. As a result, an auditor will need to determine the number of transactions to test, which transaction to actually test, and what test will need to be ran. Throughout the testing that is being conduct, the auditor will have a determined tolerable deviation (error) rate. During or after the testing has been conducted, the auditor has to compare the maximum deviation rate to their tolerable deviation rate. As a result, if the maximum deviation rate is lower or equal to the tolerable deviation rate, the auditor can conclude that the control is working effectively. In addition, the auditor will want to use a sampling method to ensure that the control is working effectively. If, at any time, the maximum deviation rate was high than the tolerable deviation rate, the auditor will have to decide if the testing should be concluded with an ineffective control or the sampling size should be increased. ... Yamato and other anime like Mach A Go Go had female characters in the shows that were both allies and sometimes love interest to the main characters, but still were depicted as strong female role models and were drawn with normal features and body types. However, as time has passed, women in anime have been more and more sexualized and this has had an effect on how young people look at Japanese culture and women in particular. In this paper, the effects of this practice will be observed. With the anime boom of the last few years, the way women have been portrayed in these animated cartoons has been more and more sexualized. Shows such as Fairy Tale depict the female leads as scantily clad fighters with rather large breast. Even the youngest girl on the show that is around the age of 11 to 12 is depicted with larger than normal breast. Analysis Of Dalton Conley s You May Ask Yourself Dalton Conley s book, You May Ask Yourself, defines sociological imagination as, The ability to connect the most basic, intimate aspects of an individual s life to seemingly impersonal and remote historical forces (Conley 2015, pg. A 11). Sociological Imagination is the idea of being able to step outside of the box, and evaluate society from an alternative point of view. Symbolic Interactionism, norms, socialization, and the idea of understanding yourself vs. understanding the social aspect of society, are some of the key concepts mentioned throughout this paper, to help break apart what the sociological imagination consists of. Society is changing a lot, and change can sometimes make it hard to cope with the world around us. Sociological imagination is a lot deeper than just common sense. Author of The Sociological Imagination, C. Wright Mills states, Talking about sociological imagination is what makes us feel more grounded in the face of all these changes (C. Wright Mills). If I keep an open mind, and pay attention to the larger world around me, I am better to understand the connections of what is going on in my individual life, and what is going on in the social world. The sociological imagination has two lenses to it, the individual lens, and the society lens. All across the nation there are conversations surrounding the protesting of police brutality specially against black citizens that typically ends up in severe brutality or in most cases murder. As of October 13, 977 innocent minorities were murdered due to police brutality. Some call into question whether or not this protest is strictly about the protest of police behavior or if it s a blatant disrespect towards our country as a whole. While the National Anthem is being played, athletes all over the sports world are taking a knee in order to bring awareness to the racial inequality and police brutality to minorities. This protest was started after the murders of Terence Crutcher and Kieth Lamont Scott, by Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL player for the 49ers during his team s preseason in 2016. Kaepernick had decided to use his platform to use his voice for a different purpose besides only playing football. I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppressed black people and people of color.... To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. The Consequences Of Prison Recidivism Improving Prison Reentry and Reducing Recidivism Recidivism is a social problem that continues year after year. The National Institute of Justice claims that this is one of the most fundamental concepts in criminal justice. They also provide some statistic. Within three years of release, about two thirds (67.8 percent) of released prisoners were rearrested. Within five years of release, about three quarters (76.6 percent) of released prisoners were rearrested. Of those prisoners who were rearrested, more than half (56.7 percent) were arrested by the end of the first year. Recidivism is the act of an individual continuing a bad behavior after they have experienced negative consequences or repercussion from that behavior. In some instances ... To help solve this problem he suggests something called Second Chance Legislation. Based on the nature of the crime, evidence supports that if an individual has not reoffended or recommitted a crime, enough time has passed for an individual to learn from there mistake and if they have not commit a crime will not due so. Heroux suggests expunging their criminal record as if it never happened at all. There are other things to consider when discussing recidivism. Yes, it s important to note how the issue can be solved, but it s also important to note why it is happening so often. Many individuals who have been incarcerated face an addiction, or a mental health issue this addition could be to intoxicants such as drugs and alcohol, but as mentioned it could also be a mental health issue. These individuals face stigmas in the community and as a result may not receive the treatment they need due to embarrassment and shame. The following will explain the beneficial side effects and the harmful side effects of vegetarianism. Vegetarian diets are considered one of the most healthiest diets. Physicians recommend a vegan diet for better overall health. One of the reasons why is because vegetarians usually live longer than meat eaters. According to the article, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a vegetarian diet is lower in saturated fats. (Physicians Committee, 1) Lower saturated fats in a diet aid to a healthy heart, resulting in a generally longer life span. There are different types of proteins. Plants and animals, when consumed, each supply us with different proteins. Replacing animal protein with plant protein lowers blood cholesterol levels. From the Physicians committee article, a study shown that adding meat to a vegetarian diet raises blood pressure rapidly and significantly. (Physicians Committee, 1). This information ... • 47. Electric Motors And The Future Of Electric Motors Flick the switch and the lights usually comes on. This involves a but ton of electricity. Our past ancestors would love to have these electric motors that we have today. You will find these motors from everything to electric trains and remote controlled cars. As an example we will use a computer. They usually have two but the biggest ones can have up to 12. They usually are used from the fan to cool it down and the hard drive. These motors are in everything we use these days. From the fans we use to the hair dryers to dry our hair. Without these we would still have horses and buggies. It s sad that we use these things everyday and take them for granted. These little motors have six parts: Armature or rotor, commutator, brushes, axle, field magnet, and DC power supply of some sort. Most electric motors operate through the interaction between an electric motor s magnetic field and winding currents to generate force. In certain applications, such as in regenerative braking with traction motors in the transportation industry, electric motors can also be used in reverse as generators to convert mechanical energy into electric power. Found in applications as diverse as industrial fans, blowers and pumps, machine tools, household appliances, power tools, and disk drives, electric motors can be powered by direct current sources, such as from batteries, motor vehicles or rectifiers, or by alternating current sources, such as from the power grid, inverters or generators. Small motors may be found in electric watches. General purpose motors with highly standardized dimensions and characteristics provide convenient mechanical power for industrial use. The largest of electric motors are used for ship propulsion, pipeline compression and pumped storage applications with ratings reaching 100 megawatts. Electric motors may be classified by electric power source type, internal construction, application, type of motion output, and so on. Thomas Davenport developed the first real electric motor although Joseph Henry and Michael Faraday created early motion devices using electromagnetic fields. The early motor created spinning disks or levers that rocked back and forth. These devices could not do any work for humankind but were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 50. Ida B. Wells Barnett During the American Progressive Era, generally regarded as the late 1800s and early 1900s, many ideals were changing among the American people. During this period, which closely followed the end of the civil war, there was an especially great amount of change in what was considered an appropriate way of conducting oneself, especially if one happened to be a black woman. Ida B. Wells Barnett, an African American activist who was particularly outspoken on the inhumanity and barbarism of public lynching, can be used as an excellent primary source exemplifying how black women in the progressive era felt that they were expected to be presented. As well as identifying the roles and visions of women in this period, Ida B. Wells Barnett is an example of a women who broke many barriers, exceeding the limitations put on her by the social constructs of her race and gender. During this period in American history there were strong views held by the majority of society about how black women were supposed to conduct themselves. There was a strong patriarchal dominance over black women, with the subordinance of women being greatly influenced by the remnants of slavery. Since men were so fiercely controlled during slavery, often not allowed much contact with their families, and very strict regulations surrounding their sexual relationships with their wives, much of the masculinity of the men seemed to be stripped away by their masters. After being freed, many black men felt the need to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 52. Advantages And Disadvantages Of NMR Spectroscopy NMR spectroscopy is a powerful analytical tool used for studying both structural and chemical information about the sample. When it is implemented for metabolomics studies NMR provides several advantages. Firstly, NMR based metabolic profiling can be highly quantitative and reproducible. This is extremely helpful when multivariate analysis are usually performed in metabolomic analysis (Nicholson and Wilson 1989). Furthermore, NMR sensitivity is hardly affected by metabolite pKa or hydrophobicity, which suggests that NMR is an excellent choice for samples in different conditions (Pan and Raftery 2007).
