Representative democracy is a form of democracy where elected representatives govern on behalf of the people. It places power in the hands of elected representatives rather than direct rule by the people. A democratic government is generally considered better because it provides accountability, improves decision making, deals with differences, and enhances citizen dignity. However, some criticisms are that leaders may try to divide people along lines like religion or caste to gain power despite not being worthy to rule. India functions as a parliamentary democratic republic with the President as head of state and Prime Minister as head of government according to its Constitution.
