Osaka is a designated city and capital of Osaka Prefecture located on Honshu island in Japan. It has a population of over 2.6 million people and covers an area of 223 square kilometers. Osaka has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The city was established in 1889 and served as a political and economic center of Japan in the 16th century before the capital moved to Edo. Modern Osaka remains a major industrial and business center.
