1. Examine Ireland and the European Union’s relationship.
2. Understand how the EU works.
Heading: Democracy 15 Date:
2. We are going to read pages 264, 265 and 267 of the book.
We will take notes along the way examining what the EU is
and how it has affected Ireland. Many of the notes at the
start will be about the previous chapter which explains the
structure of the EU.
You’ll end by drawing stamps representing different
countries in Europe as I put up all the EU members.
Plan for today
3. I will need about twenty-three people to read today. Raise hands
after each part.
(Note) The European Parliament has 751 MEPs (members of the
European Parliament). They discuss, debate and vote on laws.
(Note) The Council of the EU are all the leaders of the member
countries (Taoiseach, Prime Ministers, Presidents and
Chancellors). They meet and vote on big issues during ‘Summits’.
(Note) The European commission is 28 people (one from each
member country) who think about what is best for Europe and
come up with ideas.
(Task – first person to raise their hand and name the Taoiseach of
Ireland in 2013 will get a green card. ‘Knowledge of Irish politics’). EK

4. I will need about sixteen more people to read, some people only 3-
4 words. Raise hands after each part.
(Note)The EU has help Ireland develop roads, education, human
rights, farming, fishing and more.
(Note)The EU bailed us out during the economic crises by giving
us money.
(Note) Austerity: Difficult economic conditions created by the
government to reduce public spending.
(Note)The EU has helped fund projects of peace in Northern
Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
