2. Warm –up – pens, paper, journal, books
•(note) News has the power to influence what and how you think. It
conveys what ‘normal’ is and tells you what is going on in the world.
•(Write an answer) There is an old Greek story which says that if a
person could turn invisible, they would naturally do evil and
perverse things? What would you do if no one could see you? (If you
could turn invisible)
Homework: Blue Book page 157.
(note) Skills: Expressing ideas and managing information.
(note) Objectives
1. Examine who controls the news media.
2. Be able to explain the word ‘sceptical’
(Note Heading:) Media 2 Date:
3. We are going to read page 250 to 252 today which shows who
controls newspapers. We mainly focus on Ireland here but
branch out to a global level as well.
Page 252 introduces ‘Fake News’ and mentions Donald
Trump, alongside the word ‘clickbait’ which we’ll examine.
We’ll complete an exercise in the Blue Activity book then.
VERY IMPORTANT – NOTE NOW IN JOURNAL
Bring in a newspaper for next week, any newspaper.
Plan for today
4. We will read pages 250 to 251, which shows who owns the news
media. Take down the notes after the reading.
(note) RTE is owned by the state. Some people fear it is state
propaganda therefore (lies).
(note) If a private company owned a newspaper and another
business, it could influence people towards their other business
to make more money.
(note) If news only shows one side of a story, it is called biased.
There are issues when companies are racist, sexist or against a
religion for example and convey their way of thinking as ‘normal’.
(Think) Imagine you want to buy something (clothes for example).
Would what other people think about you affect your decision?

5. We will read pages 252, which examines fake news. Take down the
notes after the reading.
(note) The term ‘Fake News’ became popular in 2016. It is when a
story is made up and not based on facts.
(note) It is wrongfully thrown around if a person dislikes a true
fact and wishes it was not based on facts (Trump).
(note) Clickbait: a heading or image meant to lure you into
something. In this analogy, you are the fish.
(Task) Page 159 in the Blue reflective journal. Draw a pie chart (a
circle) to present the information. Does not have to be precise.
REMINDER: Bring in a NEWSPAPER for next week##########
