The Future of Data Science and Machine Learning at Scale: A Look at MLflow, D...Databricks
Many had dubbed 2020 as the decade of data. This is indeed an era of data zeitgeist.
From code-centric software development 1.0, we are entering software development 2.0, a data-centric and data-driven approach, where data plays a central theme in our everyday lives.
As the volume and variety of data garnered from myriad data sources continue to grow at an astronomical scale and as cloud computing offers cheap computing and data storage resources at scale, the data platforms have to match in their abilities to process, analyze, and visualize at scale and speed and with ease — this involves data paradigm shifts in processing and storing and in providing programming frameworks to developers to access and work with these data platforms.
In this talk, we will survey some emerging technologies that address the challenges of data at scale, how these tools help data scientists and machine learning developers with their data tasks, why they scale, and how they facilitate the future data scientists to start quickly.
In particular, we will examine in detail two open-source tools MLflow (for machine learning life cycle development) and Delta Lake (for reliable storage for structured and unstructured data).
Other emerging tools such as Koalas help data scientists to do exploratory data analysis at scale in a language and framework they are familiar with as well as emerging data + AI trends in 2021.

At the heart of this is a bunch of complex ingestion of a mix of normalized and denormalized data with various linkage scenarios power by a central Identity Linking Graph. In this session we will introduce the delta-rs project which is helping bring the power of Delta Lake outside of the Spark ecosystem. By providing a foundational Delta Lake library in Rust, delta-rs can enable native bindings in Python, Ruby, Golang, and more.We will review what functionality delta-rs supports in its current Rust and Python APIs and the upcoming roadmap.

In this knolx session, we will come to know about Delta Lake and its features. Delta Lake is one of the greatest innovations by Databricks that makes existing data lakes more scalable and reliable. Delta Lake is an open source storage layer that brings reliability to data lakes. Delta Lake provides ACID transactions, scalable metadata handling, and unifies streaming and batch data processing. Delta Lake runs on top of our existing data lake and is fully compatible with Apache Spark APIs.

SFHUG presentation from February 2, 2016. One of the key values of the Hadoop ecosystem is its flexibility. There is a myriad of components that make up this ecosystem, allowing Hadoop to tackle otherwise intractable problems. However, having so many components provides a significant integration, implementation, and usability burden. Features that ought to work in all the components often require sizable per-component effort to ensure correctness across the stack.
Lenni Kuff explores RecordService, a new solution to this problem that provides an API to read data from Hadoop storage managers and return them as canonical records. This eliminates the need for components to support individual file formats, handle security, perform auditing, and implement sophisticated IO scheduling and other common processing that is at the bottom of any computation.
Lenni discusses the architecture of the service and the integration work done for MapReduce and Spark. Many existing applications on those frameworks can take advantage of the service with little to no modification. Lenni demonstrates how this provides fine grain (column level and row level) security, through Sentry integration, and improves performance for existing MapReduce and Spark applications by up to 5×. Lenni concludes by discussing how this architecture can enable significant future improvements to the Hadoop ecosystem.
About the speaker: Lenni Kuff is an engineering manager at Cloudera. Before joining Cloudera, he worked at Microsoft on a number of projects including SQL Server storage engine, SQL Azure, and Hadoop on Azure. Lenni graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in computer science and computer engineering.

Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.

Schema enforcement, also known as schema validation, is a safeguard in Delta
Lake that ensures data quality by rejecting writes to a table that do not match the
table’s schema.
● Schema validation on write.
● Cannot contain any additional columns that are not present in the target
table’s schema
● Cannot have column data types that differ from the column data types in the
target table.
