James Cook was a British explorer born in 1728 who completed three major expeditions for Great Britain between 1768-1779. He became a captain in 1771 and led the first of his expeditions to Tahiti and New Zealand, where he produced highly accurate maps. On his second voyage he explored the Pacific Ocean, including discovering Hawaii. His third voyage sought the Northwest Passage but he died in Hawaii in 1779 after encountering hostile locals who initially thought he was a god.
I realised I knew appallingly little about the history of white settlement in Australia, and thus about Australia Day. I'm focusing on this aspect of our history because tomorrow's Australia Day, but in no way do I intend this to be disrespectful to indigenous Australians, many of whom - naturally - have a very different perspective on white settlement.

Who was this explorer? What did he find? What happened to him? Why did Benjamin Franklin write a letter to American naval officers asking them to let him go if they encountered him?
This was originally prepared to educate school and college students during Darwin birth bicentenary but I continued to make presentations for the children.
