Captain James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, and cartographer who lived from 1728 to 1779. He learned navigation and cartography as a merchant navy captain before joining the Royal Navy. Cook commanded three voyages to the Pacific Ocean where he mapped many areas and made first contact with previously uncontacted indigenous peoples. He died in Hawaii in 1779 after a confrontation with native Hawaiians.
