Ferdinand Magellan was born in 1480 in Portugal and first went to sea in 1505 sailing to India. In 1519, Magellan set sail to circumnavigate the globe with 240 men aboard 5 ships, hoping to find a western passage to Asia. Magellan brought weapons, food, and other supplies. Though Magellan sailed for Spain, he had previously sailed for Portugal but had a dispute with the king. Magellan died in 1521 on the Philippine island of Mactan after being hit with a poisoned arrow during a battle with natives. He was the first person to sail around the entire world.
