Leif Erikson, a Norse explorer from Iceland, was the first known European to reach North America around the year 1001, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. He explored parts of North America, including Baffin Island and an area he called Markland, finding forests, grapes, and establishing Christianity in Greenland upon his return.
