Captain James Cook was a famous British explorer and astronomer born in 1728 in Marton, England who made three expeditions around the world, mapping Australia and New Zealand on his first voyage from 1768 to 1771 where he sought to observe the transit of Venus; Cook explored many lands including Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica before being killed in Hawaii in 1779 while trying to avoid scurvy through a diet of fruits and vegetables.
